The Most Slept-On Album of 1988!!!.......2005-01-19
"Su-per...Casanova!!!"
Super Lover Cee (Caliente Frederick) and Casanova Rud (Erik Rudnicki) showcased a wealth of lyrical talent on this album. I've never seen the CD, only the LP and the cassette (I wore out two copies of this tape in 1988), it was THAT AWESOME! The legendary Paul C. laid the tracks and arranged the samples, and this album made him #1 in demand by every rapper in the NYC underground hip-hop scene.
The first track, "I'm Back", sets the stage for the lyrical treat you are about to experience. The intro includes a short block call from Rud ("Yo, What's Up Troop?") and then the action starts. "Girls Act Stupidally..." is the type of macho bravado that made Super Lover Cee famous:
"P.K.A. - professionally known as
The lover. I use my funky dope microphone as
A tool but I'm cool, don't come in my face wrong
Kick an iller rap than the one that it's based on..."
The third track, "All You MCs", features two unique items - Casanova Rud's on the lead mic and the first time I ever heard Isaac Hayes' "Hyberbolicsyllabic..." used in a sample (the beat that made DJ Quik famous later on). Casanova Rud's lyrics reign supreme:
"All you MCs are so stupid, you cannot even talk
You don't understand it's me the girls always seem to hawk
When I walk into a jam, it's Rud that takes the chance
Even though you know you hate me, you still want to dance..."
And Rud goes on dissing wannabe's as only he can. A sleeper classic track!
Just when you think it can't get any deeper...it does! "Gets No Deeper" uses a classic Supe & Rud syncopation to lay multiple rhymes on a twangy country-sounding sample. And the bravado continues with "Pump it Back", a bawdy tale of how the duo treats their love slaves in the bedroom. The samples are vintage old-school, as only DNA and Paul C. can do it. And this sets the stage for the title track, which Supe and Rud made into a video that got decent play on Yo! MTV Raps and Rap City back in the day.
"Girls I Got 'Em Locked" has a hook that is sooooo good, I ran to the record store (I was only 14 then!) and spent my lunch money the same day I saw the video. I remember going to a competition for my school and I had this song playing in my headphones. After they dismissed the crowd, they made the mistake of leaving the mics on...I calmly stepped on stage, put the headphones up to the mic, and INSTANT PARTY TIME!!! I probably sold 10 of those tapes myself by playing this track that day - it was that good.
The next track, "I Gotta Good Thing", is the first track on the album to use a James Brown sample. Again, Supe shows that he's "bad on the mic" by letting the world know "I'm a cold stone lover". Classic syncopation by the best James Brown samplers out there.
"Come and Get Some" is a wonderful double entendre in vintage Supe and Rud style. With the lyrics, the duo make their bold statement: "Girls, Come on, Get on, and Get Some!!!" The lyrics are set to a fantastic hook with the best use of a siren I've ever heard, yet the sampling and the mixing invite other MCs to come and get some of the best sound around, because it can't be beat. One of the classic tracks of 1988, and totally slept on by the people too busy listening to EPMD at the time.
"Super-Casanova!" is another instant classic done in the inimitable Supe and Rud fashion. The syncopation shows off the superior mic skills of Supe as he shouts out his credentials with an addictive "Su-per...Casanova!" in the background. This is the first time Gerald Levert's "Casanova" was sampled, and it was simple and effective. Another great party track.
Last, but certainly not least, is the song that put Super Lover Cee and Casanova Rud on the map. "Do the James..." is simply unbeatable as a James Brown sample, referring to the fact that Super Lover Cee can make anyone get down:
"Let's get situated - girls I am assigning
To do the Super Lover and clap to my funky rhyming...
Me, when on the hip-hop, I'll make you get down
And do the James..."
You'll find this track on many compilation CDs when people remember 1988, and it deserves to be there.
All in all, this is an album you can listen to from start to finish without skipping past any songs, a rarity for all but the best rap albums. As you can probably tell, Super Lover Cee and Casanova Rud were highly slept on by the mainstream, but if you were lucky to own this gem, the hardcore listeners gave you your props. In a year when hip-hop would never be bigger, Supe & Rud were never better. This is my all-time favorite album, so much so that I purchased the CD recently for $57.00!
Yeah, it's that dope.
