5 out of 5 stars ANITA DESERVES A STANDING OVATION!.......2005-06-23

Anita is at her best on this album, the other musicians such as Nathan East (bass), Ricky Lawson (drums), Greg Philliganes (Piano), Vernone Fails (Keyboards) are all at their finest producing melodic improvisation. Michael J.Powell also deserves some credit for the crystal clear quality on this fine produce.

In my humble opinion, this is Anita's best album, she is smooth, sophisticated & sexy, in fact she's simply peerless, no one can compare & no one even comes close.

Anita glides effortlessly through this album with great panache. Her phrasing is timely and above all accurate.

The stand out for me on this album is "Love you to the letter" as I'm a sucker for old-fashioned lyrics. It rates as one of my top 10 romantic ballads of all times (pretty much alongside "There's no easy way" by James Ingram).

If anyone deserves a standing ovation in the hall of fame of rhythm & blues, it certainly is Anita Baker. I'm beginning to believe in her fairy tales!

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest.......2005-06-15

I"m a 25 year old male and I have been listening to Anita Baker since I was about 7 years old and this album is a masterpiece just like all the rest. She is the greatest to me and always will be. Anita is the only artist that I know of that I can listen to every album which I own everyone of them and I can always find a song to fit my mood. The Greatest enough said!

5 out of 5 stars Steamy & Mellow!!!.......2005-06-13

This is one of Anita Baker's most complex works. Most of the songs were written by Anita in collaboration with other accomplished songwriters.

Some of the highlights include the richly intricate "Talk To Me". Next there's the most mellow "Perfect Love Affair" with Anita's velvety vocal. "Soul Inspiration", with a dazzling arrangement and Anita's full-bodied vocal, is a shining star! "Lonely" is fascinating with its varied tempos and Anita's sultry vocal. She builds this one to a red-hot frenzy! The piano solo is a cooker as well. Then there's "No One To Blame" with its bluesy atmosphere and raw emotion. The finale "Fairy Tales" weaves a lyrical story complete with a fine arrangement as Anita's vocal builds along with this tale. Kudos to Greg Phillinganes on the piano solo at the end. It is hot!!

5 out of 5 stars A very original and unorthodox album for its time........2004-07-30

This album had much stronger jazz influences than Baker's three previous albums. At a time when most female R&B singers were turning to heavily-synthesized and terribly over-produced club/ dance music, Baker refused to compromise her artistry -- in the end, she came up with a real winner. "Talk To Me", "Whatever It Takes", "More Than You Know", "Perfect Love Affair" and "Soul Inspiration" are all excellent examples of smooth and classy Adult Contemporary-R&B at its best. No serious fan of adult-oriented R&B or jazz vocals should be without this album.

5 out of 5 stars anitas finest.......2004-05-31

BOY THIS IS THE BEST ONE YET ,I DONT KNOW WHY THE CRITICTS SLEPT ON THIS .HER VOICE JUST FLOWS ON TALK TO ME AND PERFECT LOVE AFFAR,AND TO SEE HER LIVE IS EVEN BETTER,.FAIRYTALES AND NO ONE TO BLAME ALSO STICKS OUT ASWELL,YOU CANT GO WRONG WITH THIS ALBUM ITS A GREAT CHANGE FROM GIVING YOU THE BEST.WHICH WAS A LITTLE TO COMMERCIAL ,BUT I LOVE THIS LADY VOICE EITHER WAY .SHE HAS THE TOTAL PACKAGE STYLE TALENT AND CLASS .SHE IS MY SONGTRESS

5 out of 5 stars URBAN COMPOSITIONS.......2007-01-19

THIS CD IS A GREAT VARIETY OF HOLY HIP HOP. THIS IS FOR EVERYONE, AND HAS A NEW SOUND FOR THE FANS OF HIP HOP.

3 out of 5 stars where have i heard this b4?.......2006-01-06

lemme preface this by sayin' that not everyone waz fortunate 2 cop "rocksoul entertainment, vol 1: rock of ages" when it first dropped, so that'z what kept me from purchasin' this CD. if u can't find tha 'rock of ages' joint, then by all meanz, do pick this up, but if you're like me and u DO have it, this iz a regurgitated waste of time. over half of this CD popped up on 'ages' so unless there are stronger mixez of thoze cutz on 'compositions', you're betta off stickin' with 'ages'. (have i said that enough timez already? (lol))

yet and still, this dezervez three starz on tha strength of tha 'ages' trax, and that it'z sound urban Gospel music that effortlessly competez with, and routinely bestz, tha secular commercial stuff u hear now 4 tha earz of an eazily-influenced youth. and hey - u might not b able 2 cop 'ages' now, anyway. so go on, do your soul a favour and check this out. PEACE.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD, But Not Enhanced..........2005-10-14

This CD is everything it claims to be, and more. It's not, however, everything the Amazon.com classifiers claim it to be. As far as I can tell, it contains normal CD music tracks only. If anyone owns a copy that has any additional data or material (videos, etc.) on it, please let me know, and I will purchase this "enhanced" version. Thanks. GBU, MDJ.

4 out of 5 stars Rock on, RockSoul!.......2005-04-29

"Urban Compositions" is a definite winner for all of the Christian hip-hop heads. In a crazy world where secular rap and hip-hop rules the radio, RockSoul Entertainment is one of the few Christian record labels that praises the Lord daily. Lee Jerkins and the entire RockSoul Records Family does it like no other. The highlights are Shai Linne's New York bass-inspired "Issues", Isaac J. Phillips' forewarning jam "Any Day Now", The RockSoul Family (Shai Linne, J-Silas, Sistah Dee and Michelle Bonilla) with "The Invite", Michelle Bonilla's R&B lyrics and Sistah Dee's raps flows on "Faithful", J-Silas & Shai Linne double teaming on the reality song, "Ghetto Stories", Monique Walker and Corey Red with "Free", The T.R.U.T.H. and Ambassador of the Cross Movement, alongside Michelle Bonilla, on the Chinese music-laced "Better Days", Tre-Z street bumping praise joint, "Eternal Gain", Sistah Dee and Shekinah's tag team on the Christian homegirls anthem, "Where You At" and Tanesia Mack's heart-moving song, "Joe", dedicated to Joe Jerkins, Lee Jerkins' son. In conclusion, Urban Compositions drops it like it's hot! RockSoul Entertainment's gonna be here for years to come. Continue success. If none of you listened to this yet, what are you waiting for? Go hit the stores and buy this hot disc! You won't be disappointed. Praise the Lord!

5 out of 5 stars This is what music is all about..........2005-08-23

I first heard The Square Egg at a "Funk Jazz Night" in Miami. All of my friends that I went to the club with left before they got to hear the Square Egg Perform (big mistake!). I stayed and listened to them and was more impressed by them than I was by any live performance EVER! I thought, this is what music is all about. Its not only the words that capture you but the ORIGINAL sound that the band has. I went to another show in Miami(yeah, I guess I was a groupie) and have been listening to them and turning my friends on to them ever since. The Square Egg is music that you can chill to, love to, or dance to. Keep up the good work guys!
        xoxo

        5 out of 5 stars Inspirational...........2005-08-23

I first ambled upon TSE while hanging out in a producer friend of mine's studio.... One tune and I was hooked. For those of you seriously interested in the music - it's mesmerizing and hypnotic. One song flows effortlessly into the next so you don't know if you're listening to track 1 or track 7. TSE's music has a unique way of relaxing you all the while portraying a deep message. Listen closely - the songs all say so much more than first meets the ear! TSE is a wonderful, unclassifiable mix of sounds.... TSE just IS! I highly recommend this musical journey to any intelligent being.

5 out of 5 stars Deaf or Crazy?.......2005-08-19

The Square Egg sounds nothing like D'Angelo...and NOTHING like Erykah Badu. "Right Said Fred" is either deaf, crazy or is completely unfamiliar with the genre.

Stick to Club-Pop, Fred...and leave the good sh-t to the rest of us.

        GP

        5 out of 5 stars ALWAYS interesting..........2005-08-18

Why is it that if someone isn't "thuggin' in the club" or dancing to a Lil Jon beat that they have to be "neol soul." I have NEVER read/ heard an interview where The Square Egg even came close to calling themselves "neo soul" or any other "neo" label that the industry and thoughtless consumers need to put on music for it to make sense to them.

Essentially (and yes, I AM a band member) TSE IS what its name signifies - DIFFERENT. Badu? D'Angelo? Hardly an attempt to be those things. As a matter of fact "trying" to be anything is failure. TSE simply "is." It is good music. It is different. It is not rap, funk, neo soul, classic soul, hip-hip, soul on a stick, soul in the hole, soul sonic force, soul patrol or otherwise.

What is most ironic (and annoying to me) is that these online stores have such a difficult time categorizing TSE with contemporary music that it is being boxed all across the the boards. Some list it as "rock" while others (including this one) list it as "dance." I have even read it listed as "soul" or "nusoul" (which I am told is somehow different than "neo soul."

In the end TSE may not be for everyone. But TSE certainly doesn't claim to be something it is not. It simply "is." Enjoy it for yourself.

(Yes, I hunt down ALL reviews and give a rebuttal to them.)

1 out of 5 stars When Will We Hear Something New???.......2005-08-15

I bought this CD because of a friend's recommendation, who I used to trust, but never again. This cd is the worst in a long line of sorry, wannabe neo-soul "singers" that think reciting lame-ass poetry over ripped off funk riffs and hip-hop classics is grounds for music. Don't get me wrong - some of the tracks are tight but they are all ultimately ruined by the overbearing montone voice of the lead "singer". Get a grip buddy. It sounds like you are trying to be D'Angelo but just come off as a watered down Erika Badu.
