Fans of Rickie Lee Jones and Jesus Christ can decide whether this devotional music is rapturously spiritual or deliriously strange. It sounds like nothing Jones has previously released, or anything characterizable as contemporary Christian. Instead, her voice soars and wobbles through repetitive, stream-of-consciousness incantations over rhythmic throbs and pulses. On "Where I Like It Best," Jones testifies to the power of private prayer (while seeming to cast churchgoers as hypocrites). The feral distortions of "Tried to Be a Man" recall some of the textures (if not the themes) of her former boyfriend Tom Waits, while the acoustic setting of "Donkey Ride" features guitar tunings that might make Sonic Youth wince and "Elvis Cadillac" conjures a singular vision of heaven. At close to eight and a half minutes, the closing "I Was There" seems to follow Van Morrison into the mystic. Some of this music is oddly affecting; much of it is merely odd. --Don McLeese

Not like anything I've ever heard from Rickie Lee Jones. I've read some of the other reviews, so felt compelled to write one. Not everyone song works, but all are powerful and moving. If you are looking for glossy, packaged, commercial pop, this isn't right for you. If you are looking for incantatory, raw, eclectic music with a spiritual twist and stream of consciousness lyrics, then this is for you. This album is a revelation.

I love rickie's music, especially "evening" and "traffic", even "ghostyhead" is more palatable than this mess. Maybe it's the obnoxious music that is obscuring the usual beauty of her voice and poetry... I don't know. It is harder to find the moments of beauty and cohesion in this album than to sit through drunken kareoke. Even amazon's attempt at offering soundbytes with selling points is rough. I guess I'll just do as another reviewer is, stash this unpleasantness and await her next recording.

I always considered Rickie to be a rawer Joni Mitchell. As Courtney Love is a rawer Madonna. But too often she seemed unfocused and distracted.

On this one Rickie shines! This is the high mark of her career so far. Through all the drug hazed days and aimless wandering she's seen the light.

If you never listen to another Rickie album, at least give this one a try.

Falling Up is the song I can't get out of my head.
It Hurts and Elvis Cadillac are other catchy pop tunes.
Nobody Knows My Name and Gethseme are haunting tunes.

Two and one-half stars. I've been a fan of RLJ from her first single, but her albums have always fallen into one of two categories for me: the ones I play all the way through ("Rickie Lee Jones", "Traffic From Paradise", "It's Like This"), and the ones I take a song or two from for the Rickie Lee playlist on my iPod ("The Magazine", "Flying Cowboys"). "The Sermon" falls into the latter category. "Chuck E" aside, hooky pop ditties have never been RLJ's strong suit -- even considering that, "The Sermon" is a tough listen, and is only intermittently worth the effort. After several listens, I am still looking for the songs. I know you're not Avril Levigne, Rickie, but give me something to hang onto here! Her talk-sung sermonette on prayer, "Where I Like It Best", brings tears every time I hear it, on sheer force of emotional authenticity: she exhorts the listener to "take back" prayer from organized religion, to look up and shout "I'm down here, too! I'm down here, too!", and it's goose bump material. "Elvis Cadillac" is a funky hipster vision of the afterlife, and you can't help but smile. But those two songs and the occasional inspired line ("Riding into town on your donkey/But you're going out on a cross") notwithstanding, much of "The Sermon" is jangly accompaniment to a poetry reading.

Talk about one-hit wonders. This disc was so discordant that I could only stand about one-half of one song before I shut it off and hid it away, just in case one of my kids tried to play it someday. Even the lyrics were self-indulgent. When will indies understand that there must be SOMETHING for another HUMAN BEING to connect with, whether it be the music or the words. Don't make us work so hard to like you, Rikkie.

The Who Sell Out's pirate-radio concept goes south in the album's second half--the Who ran out of time before they could write enough faux commercials--but it still remains in many ways their best and most entertaining album. Pete Townshend and John Entwistle supply song after great song, and along with Keith Moon play them with power and focus. The classic single "I Can See for Miles" is matched on at least a handful of tracks, including the opening psychedelic-pop blast of "Armenia City in the Sky" (written by Townshend pal Speedy Keen), the hilarious social-interaction tales "Odorono" and "Tattoo," and the majestic mini-opus "Rael." This remaster's bonus tracks are occasionally too much of a good thing, but the Tommy rough draft "Glow Girl" is brilliant. --Rickey Wright

Review after review has said it, and I agree that this is a wonderful, unique album. It's the first "old" rock album I "discovered" free of peer influence, and (along with "A Quick One"), I couldn't get away from it. And this album continues to intrigue and amuse me to this day.

The songs are a diverse, interesting, and fun lot, to say the least: "Tattoo" has in recent times become more relevant than ever ... "Our Love Was" is as good as power pop gets, with an absolutely stunning studio performance that steamrolls it along. Moonie was definitely at the top of his game, and his multi-tracked drums are composed, arranged, and recorded phenomenally well on tunes like "Rael" and "I Can See for Miles". And I love those lyrics and ultra-cheesy jingles ... nobody else has ever done stuff quite like this.

As for the bonus tracks, they just go to show that in 1967 The Who was leaving better stuff in the can than most bands were putting out. "Hall of the Mountain King" is the best rock-n-roll thrashing up of a classical piece I've ever heard, hands down.

If you enjoy classy British rock and power pop that REALLY has some power ... and the occasional moment of shimmering beauty ... The Who Sell Out will have you grinning from ear to ear.

To me this is the Who at the height of their powers and my second favorite album by them, falling only behind the "Meaty, Beaty Big and Bouncy" compilation. There's not much to say about the music that hasn't been said before. Everything's ferocious, the lyrics are wonderful and even the "commercials" are fun. What's more this re-issue also comes with a bounty of interesting bonus tracks. It would have been nicer if the bonus material was put on a second disc to preserve the album in it's original form, but that's splitting hairs. Highly recommended.

I first took to the Who listening to my Mother's records when I was 7. I didnt get a thing of what they were singing, except I liked the sound. Until I bought Who's Next in 81 this was my album, a 2 year reign(I stole it from my mom's record shelf). I bought this CD for my enjoyment during this 16 month tour in Iraq, as I wind down the final few months I am taking off to Armenia.

Everything we take for granted in the Whonivese - Townshend's arty lyrics and approach set to crushing rock 'n' roll, is found here. This album is essentially a transitional effort from the Mod days to the rock days. In the spirit of it being transitional, it's not perfect: Silas Stingy (one of Entwistle's worst), Armenia City in the Sky; Sunrise and Rael (only worth noting because its instrumental break was the basis for the Sparks riff from Tommy.
On the other hand, this is a lot of fun, and simply one of the Who's best. An ode to pirate radio, it's stuffed with mock-commercial jingles, all of which are a riot. More importantly, it contains some of the Who's key songs: I Can See For Miles was probably the heaviest song ever made at the time, and still packs a punch now. Marianne with the Shaky Hand returns the [..]theme from Pictures of Lily, this time with an easygoing (dare I say mellow?) folk-pop melody and such. Tattoo is one of the group's funniest, a song about coming of age told in a lighthearted way. Our Love Was is one of their best pop songs, and there's also the quasi-spiritual I Can't Reach You.

A great concept album and Pete is back with a plethora of good songs, many are among his best. The bonus tracks are superb here also. A real treat for the fans. Casual fans should stay away and get Who's Next instead.

The first concert I ever went to. I was 15, towards the back, on the floor level of the Garden. This CD captures it as it was, except better because you can relive it any time you want. Raw, alive, rocking and bluesy as hell.

Essential. If you don't have it, get it, now. If you do have it, put on, now. And LOUD!

From the opening introduction to the last guitar cord ringing to fade out this is the Stones best live album and one of the greatest live albums of all time. There is a great debate going on the Amazom review board about this album it seems. Some think this Stones live album is not as great as it's reputation. Stating out of tune guitars, mistakes ... blah, blah, blah. The Stones are the greatest "rock and roll" band! Rock and Roll is not about being perfect....is it? I know that some would name other bands that they consider able to "blow the Stones away live",but this is not a contest of who can play the fastest or hardest. The Stones are not known for being technically perfect musicians. They are tremendous songwriters and have written many of the greatest rock anthems in history! I am a musician and their playing ability is excellent, but it is their style and writing craft that sets them apart. Their sound is seemingly easy, but just try to duplicate it. The Stones have an amazing ability to take a 3 cord progression and turn it into something special. Musically Brown Sugar,Jumpin' Jack Flash, Honky Tonk Woman to name a few are nothing more than basic rock tunes in the hands of any other group. Yet I have never heard another group pull off an exact sounding cover of any of their songs. If I want to listen to incredible musicians I throw on a Rush album,if I want to rock I listen to the Stones. If there is another live album that comes close it might be Lynyrd Skynyrd's "One More From The Road" The boys are smokin' on that one surpassing every one of their studio counterparts,but the Stones have more classics on one album than they have in their entire recording history. So, give me " Get Yer Ya ya's Out" with all it's raw wild power, because it rocks like no other blemishes and all! If I have one complaint about this album, they should have released the complete show. Satisfaction,Gimme Shelter and Under My Thumb to name a few songs done on that tour could have been added and their are incredible versions available in the movie Gimme Shelter of the Satisfaction and Gimme Shelter.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, it's that good..........2007-05-19

This is one of the best records the Stones have ever released. It is concise, powerful, intense, and brilliantly played. It is amazing how well Mick Taylor melds into the band, so recently added as he was by the time this tour started. I'm not convinced that the strict lead/rhythm method the band took on during his tenure is the best sound for the band. I think Brian Jones and/or Ron Wood weaving their guitars with Keith is better than Taylor's more constricting format, but this is still an excellent highlight for that unique stage in the Stones' history. I can't imagine Love In Vain ever done better than here with Taylor demonstrating his slide chops and his additions to Jumping Jack Flash, Midnight Rambler, Sympathy, and Street Fighting Man are excellent as well.
Furthermore, the band is truly scary on Midnight Rambler, Street Fighting Man is exhilirating and leaves you breathless, Sympathy is quite different than the studio version with good lead work by both guitarists, and Live With Me and the Chuck Berry covers are as rocking as any band ever gets (as well as being Keith Guitar School 101). There is simply not a dull moment or a bad song on this entire set.
As Keith pummels you with the opening hammer of Jumping Jack Flash just after Sam Cutler introduces the Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World, you may come to realize that this document is the evidence that proves his Beatle-bashing boast beyond any doubt.

The first Stones Album, the first Live Album i ever bought was the first Stones Live Album and it was the first and only one i ever returned. I said the singing sucks and the playing is just damn awful. i was ready to give a whole list and fight to get my money back. Guess what? there was no argument, he agreed he said this was 'THE' album in the record section of Gimbel's Department Stores that has had the highest return to manufacturer at that time. I bought Ya-Ya's with a little please God let this be the one. It did not let me down. The Cover's and the Originals and singing plus Mick Taylor on Guitar was a corner stone to the album. I loved Brian Jones's work with the Stones and his betrayal was a key reason for the Stones sloppyness that was with them for a long time, included on their GLIYWI Album. Even though The Stones improved i still miss Brian Jones and his Musical Skills that made them hits. Can you imagine him on the Sitar and Mirimba at Concerts, today. Ya-Ya's Rocks, it did then, and in a Dinosaur Way, it still does.

No question about it.
I could listen to The Rolling Stones covers of Chuck Berry's "Carol" and "Little Queenie" on this album
10 times a day every day for a year and never get sick of hearing'em.
"Midnight Rambler" played here is the definitive version of the tune.
The studio release pales in comparison.
The sleazy bluesy feel of "Rambler" captured on "Ya-Ya's" could never be duplicated in a recording studio.
The best part of this album though is in the first moments when a climactic energy seems to've gripped Madison Square Garden when the band is in the process of being introduced and taking the stage.You can practically feel the excitement and anticipation coming right thru your speakers from the crowd and the wild manner of the microphone announcements.It still brings chills to me imagining how that scene must've looked as it was playing out.
Again...my fave Stones record.A must have classic for your collection.

This is just one of those classics that you could never get enough of, no matter how many spins it gets. A bizzarre and delightfully off-kilter assault on the ears.

'Freak Out' is one of the more unconventional albums of its time. It has that unmistakingly late 60's acid trip vibe to it that really adds a nice touch to the Zappa insanity. 'Freak Out' is full of unconventional, off-kilter, mock-pop songs that really indulge in Zappa's bizzare sense of humor, such as 'Go Cry on Somebody Else's Shoulder', but then it also has its 'moments of clarity' as well. This album really reminds me of Pink Floyd's 'Saucerful of Secrets' except with more humor and less LSD. Even though the music is aimed in different directions, the production and mix are really similar in my opinion. Everything on this album is completely, delightfully, off the wall.

From the almost instrumental arrangments of vocalizations that would later be the foundation of Mike Patton's Mr. Bungle, to the extremely long sound samples twords the end, everything fits together perfectly in its own, strange, Zappatastic way. The sound samples are really a key part to this album rather than simple filler. Zappa prove to be absolutely and completely original by preforming magnificant pieces of avant-garde art with seemingly mindless noise.

'Freak Out' is truly a gem of the late sixties, and an absolute must have for anyone who considers himself the slightest Zappa fan. Scratch that, for anyone who considers himself a fan of avant-garde music itself, this album is totally classic.

My first Zappa album was the Grand Wazoo and I thought it was pretty good. I didn't think it was that great though. But I am happy that it gave me just enough interest in Zappa to buy this album. This album attacks pop music so well you would think that it was serious and not a joke. A few songs on here have music that is not ironic (Hungry Freaks Daddy, I ain't got no heart, Who are the Brain Police, Trouble Every Day, and Help I'm a Rock) most of the songs are simple pop songs with cliche lyrics and thats what makes them so funny. A concept album is an album that has a theme the entire time or tells a story, and this was the first rock album that had a concept (yes it even preceded Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band)I have since bought one other album by Zappa (You are What You Is) and I can't choose which of the two I like better. I have really connected with his music recently and I plan on buying many of his albums. The lead work is very good for its time, but his later albums definately have WAY better guitar solos. He doesn't satire every form of life on this album like he does on later albums, but he definately satires sappy made for radio pop songs. The songs I listed above are more expirimental and those are my favorites on this album and they will hint at what Zappa will create later. It's hard to belive that so many great albums can come from one man, C'ya latter Zappa Rules!

In many cases, when an artist puts out a great debut album (or film, book, TV programme), it is quite often a pain in the butt, as they have an enormously difficult time coming up with something greater. Orson Welles's Citizen Kane is considered the greatest film of all time by many critics, how do you top that? Welles was never really able to. Zappa did. Freak Out is an amazing album, yet, Zappa was able to constantly do work that was even better than this album, one of the greatest debuts in rock history. Zappa made interesting and artistic work up until his death (which is the day I'm writing this review). This is one of my favorites, especially the last track, the originally side long song The Return of the Son of Monster Magnet. The producer, Tom Wilson, was on acid when Zappa recorded it, so God only knows what the hell transpired in his mind that night. The social commentary on here is still valid, and this is one of the greatest debuts of all time. Zappa never disappointed....

Frank Zappa's debut is a bizarre, eclectic, hilarious piece of work that's one of the man's best. To be fair, I'm not at all familiar with Zappa. But the Zappa I've heard, I like a lot. Here he divides his time between sarcastic pieces of social commentary (Hungry Freaks, Daddy; Who are the Brian Police?; You're Probably Wondering Why I'm Here; Trouble Every Day) and hilarious love song parodies (I Ain't Got No Heart; Go Cry on Somebody Else's Shoulder; Motherly Love; Anyway the Wind Blows; How Could I Be Such a Fool?) and he pulls it off either way. Oh, and the twenty-minute sound collage that ends the disc is bizarre, but it's also friggin' hilarious and so ahead of its time, it's jaw-dropping. Wowie Zowie and You Didn't Try to Call Me aren't all that good, but the rest is awesome. At LEAST buy it for the hilarious liner notes.

Listening to "Out of Our Heads" is almost like listening to two different LP's. The first 6 songs (Side One) are mostly covers of R&B chestnuts, with "That's How Strong My Love Is" being perhaps the most emotive. Which is saying something because the 3 tracks that precede it aren't too shabby either!! The live version of "It's All Right" is also a killer. On the next six tracks (Side Two)the boys mostly establish their own identity with their own material, including the definitive "Satisfaction." Either way, you can't lose, the pace transitions from song to song are very well handled, very nice staging!

Out Of Our Heads began a new era for the Rolling Stones. The songwriting team of Jagger/Richards kicked into gear with the classics Satisfaction, The Last Time and Play With Fire. But this album is also loaded with great material such as Mercy Mercy, That's How Strong My Love Is, Good Times, The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man and The Spider and the Fly. It's also got good filler tracks like Hitch Hike, Cry to Me, One More Try and the noisy live track I'm All Right. Essential album for a Rolling Stones fan.

First, the good news: this contains two of the Stones' best a-sides to date (or ever, for that matter): The Last Time, a rockin' lvoe song with a cool guitar riff, and especially (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, easily one of the biggest songs of the whole decade. Just as good, if not better, is The Last Time's b-side Play with Fire, little more Mick's growl and harpsichord. Still, it's one of the most menacing songs ever. Anyway, a few of the other songs on this disc are good too - I like the country-sounding Spider and the Fly, The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man (b-side to Satisfaction), and the high-energy cover of Mercy Mercy. They rip through the song in typical early Stones fashion. I could do with pretty much every other song on the album, though (One More Try; Hitch Hike; Good Times; That's How Strong My Love Is), so it's hard to call this an essential unless you're a Stones freak. And if you see the UK version, try to avoid it - it drops the singles, replacing them with Heart of Stone. While Heart was a highlight of Now!, the singles pretty much make this album, so without them it's incomplete.

I was about 7 yrs old when i first heard this U.S version. Decades later it still rocks. Play it loud a few times, Jagger was just starting to really stretch out his vocals. I like all the songs on this album, Mercy Mercy is a great way to start. Don't buy the U.K. version this one is much better, usually i would suggest to buy the U.K. versions but this one is the exception. A true Classic. This was the last album the Stones made before they became huge everywhere, thanks to "Satisfaction" so it has a special quality as it was the last time they would recod a lot of covers. (cry to me is magnificent) Enjoy with the volume up

This awesome rock & roll album would have been even better had it included just one thing: the SINGLE version of "Free Ride", available on the "Edgar Winter Collection" from Rhino. It was the followup single to their huge hit "Frankenstein". Like Three Dog Night and a few other artists back in roughly that same time frame, a trip back into the studio was made to create even hotter versions of the songs to be played on the radio. The single version of "Free Ride" is just that much hotter, that much punchier and that much more full of life....and was a huge hit itself! One listen and you'll see what I mean. I'm not saying the album track isn't good...I'm just saying the single version just jumps right out at you, daring you to resist it. As for the rest of the album, I can't say anything that most of these other reviewers have said. One of the best of the 70s, full of great rock & roll music and a pure joy to listen to!

Arguably, Edgar Winter Group's best album, this chart topper fused standard rock with `monster rock' and plenty of synthesizers. Edgar Winter and Rick Derringer cut loose with these self penned songs. "Hangin' Around" and "Alta Mira" are fun dance rock numbers that portray Winter at his best. "Free Ride" and "We All Had A Real Good Time" became FM rock standards with their `party on' style. Not to pigeon-hole themselves as purely hard rock, "Autumn" is a rare and unexpected ballad showcasing the groups songwriting skill. Of course, "Frankenstein" was the monster hit here and it combined a new found use of loud drums and maximum synthesizer along with unique guitar riffs and Winter's own splendid saxophone. It's a killer album that stands the test of time.

I had really ever only known about Edgar Winter from their occasional spots on classic rock radio, with their tunes Frankenstein and Free Ride, never really thinking about what other type of music they made and shrugged them off as no more than a one-hit wonder.

But one I picked up the album about six months back and have listened to it probably fifty times through. It is very hard for myself to start playing it and switch to something out on my playlist without listening to it in its entirety. While none of the songs in my mind (except for Frankenstein) truly stick out (which is possibly why it is not more well known,) the album gels together as a whole so well that few albums match it in terms of pure consistency.

While many of the songs seem simple in appearance, the instrumentation, the dynamics, and the full-blown singing of the more uptempo songs give a level of sophistication, yet remarkable, fun sound to each and every song, all the while staying unique from every other. Added to this, is the even more surprising fact that the two love songs, Round and Round, and Autumn, are two of the most beautiful songs to ever come out of a rock album, let alone a hard rock one.

Hanging Around is one of the best openers one could ever hope to have for an album, infectious, fun, spirited, truly awesome.

When It Comes is possibly the raunchiest sounding Edgar ever sounded (if that's really him singing, I'm not really sure since it sounds as if there are nine different voices singing each of the songs with lyrics), other great, fun sounding song.

Alta Mira is very quirky, yet charming song that you can't help but sing along to. Has an almost Jamaician sound that makes it all the more infectious.

Free Ride needs no explanation, as it's impossible to live past the age of 10 and not have heard the song at least once.

Undercover Man is probably the only weak song on the album if only for the ending which I think it stretched out just a bit too long. Although, it's Edgar in very fine form in terms of loud, almost off-kilter singing.

Round & Round is possibly my favorite song on the album, with its wonderful mix and acoustic and almost country-rock sound. Beautiful.

A ridiculous change of pace from Round & Round (although that's not a bad thing.) The song is basically self-evident from the title... Rock and Roll Boogie Woogie Blues. It delivers perfectly.

Autumn, as said before, is quite possibly the most beautiful rock song I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Beyond gorgeous.

And almost lastly, another huge change of pace with quite possibly a song that perfectly exemplifies the college spirit (woot), with We All Had a Real Good Time. If there's a better song out there that keeps the fun, youthful spirit of us kids and of the basic tenets of Rock n' Roll, I've yet to hear it.

Well, if you're not convinced, then its at the fault of this reviewer and not the album.. for it is truly one of the best hard rock has to offer. Better than anything Skynyrd or Ted Nugent or Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin has to offer. And that's no lie. A wonderful standout from 1972 (although it's difficult for me to say that definitively, since I was -13 at the time.)

I purchased this album only yesterday and have listened to it over and over again. This is truly one of rock's few masterpieces. Hangin around is a fun opening song. Alta Mira is a nice rock and roll song. Free Ride is great well mixed too. And who could forget Frankenstein the masterpiece of masterpieces this is the best song in the whole world. You will be happy with your purchase.

About the time this record came out, but before I ever heard of it, I saw the EWG at a roller rink in Elizabeth, NJ with my friends. They opened up with "Keep Playin' That Rock and Roll" but unlike the White Trash version with horns, it was dominated by Ronnie Montrose' raunchy guitar and I fell in love. I went as soon as I could to Korvette's, where I bought most of my records in those days, to get the new LP that Edgar mentioned while on stage. I took one look at the cover and said, "What is this......" I was happy that I bought it and I still go back to it frequently. In fact, I am probably in the minority here, but "Frankenstein" is my least favorite song and I usually skip it. But listen to all the other songs, starting with "Hangin' Around" and "When it Comes" and you will be hooked quick. The slow ballad "Autumn" and the latin sounding "Alta Mira" sound different, but all the tracks add up to one of the greatest LP's ever recorded. In my opinion, Edgar Winter never reached this level again.

The Album is a masterpiece of all time rock n roll, even if this is "the less Who album" of the Who... but nevermind!
The Sound in both Stereo (from the original master tape discovered in the vault of UMG) and 5.1 (mixed by Pete Townshend himself) is great...
As you put the disc in your player you'll hear the great differences from the 1996 reissue even if you have only a "simple" CD player..
If You're a great Who fan and you a have SACD player buy ABSOLUTELY this album and enjoy it 'til the laser of your player won't work anymore...
The second disc is clearly for fans only but the quality of some track even if are demos or outtakes is very very good!!

One of the most important, groundbreaking amd influential albums in the history of rock and roll, The Who's 1969 magnum opus "Tommy", a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid who sure plays a mean pinball, is now better than ever thanks to the brilliance of SACD and DSD remastering techniques.

Every song on the cd sounds like it was recorded just yesterday. It is 100 % crystal clear, perfectly remixed and remastered. It gives you a clearer view of the story as well as a more pleasurable than ever listening experience. Pete Townshend and the people involved in this truly put their hearts into making "Tommy" better than ever.

The bonus disc is also worth it. A lot of awesome raritis. The liner notes are an interesting read, and the album itself is of course a masterpiece nobody should be without.

"Tommy" is beyond question one of the big milestones of early rock. Musically the band were at the peak of their creativity.

All band members were obviously extremely talented musicians and both Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend were/are great singers. Apart from few exceptions like "Cousin Kevin" all songs are outstanding; and it's really great to have the whole story on one CD - compared to the old double vinyl album.

Though the storyline may seem a little weird today ( to me it always did ), there is so much great music on this album.

The second bonus CD gives a very interesting insight in the developement of some of the songs. Though the sound quality is exellent CD 2 will mainly be of interest to hard-core Who fans. None of these alternate versions are better than the ones chosen for the album, though a few come close. The studio version of "Young Man Blues" which did not appear on the original album is a nice addition too!

I was so blind-sided by this reissue - really. I have looked at this for a few years now, but I never picked it up. My impression of this was that it had some very good music along with some dated sounding tracks, so it wasn't a high priority. I'd been having very good luck buying hybrid SACD's even though I don't own a SACD player; the CD layers benefit greatly from the DSD mastering, making them stand head and shoulders above the latest PCM remasters (there are a few exceptions), so I decided to take the plunge.

The CD layer is stunning. I must have been sitting there with my mouth open after "Overture" began. I experienced emotion that wasn't there on previous listens to this on CD and vinyl. Yes, some of the tracks still sound dated, but most of this album is very good indeed, and this remaster is so incredible. If you own a great stereo rig, I highly recommend buying this - in fact, even if you don't have a great rig, I recommend it!

The Who's fourth studio(and fifth overall) album Tommy was released in May of 1969.
The Tommy album by The Who was the make or break for the group because if Tommy had failed, The Who would have probably disbanded due to lack of funds despite their concerts selling out based on Pete Townshend's guitar smashing and Keith Moon's drum kit demolishing at the end of each gig.
Guitarist Pete Townshend, under the gun after I Can See For Miles failed as a single in the UK(although it was their biggest ever hit here in the US) came up with a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid named Tommy whom becomes those aforementioned things after witnessing an event as a child that traumatized him(his father killing his step-father whom he considered his father).
Originally considered to be a single length album, the band felt it didn't make sense so they expanded it into a double album and the result is one of rock's Top 10 greatest double studio albums in history(alongside other classic double albums like the then-already released Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland and The Beatles' White album and would help pave the way for more classics like The Rolling Stones' 1972 masterwork Exile on Main Street, The Who's 1973 release Quadrophenia, Elton John's 1973 classic Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Genesis' 1974 masterwork The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Led Zeppelin's 1975 classic Physical Graffiti, Pink Floyd's 1979 masterpiece The Wall and Bruce Springsteen's 1980 classic The River among many others).
Alot of classics appear on this album like the Overture, the classic Top 20 hit Pinball Wizard, Amazing Journey, the Underture(best instrumental on here which is basically a repeat of the album's other instrumental Sparks), Go to the Mirror, I'm Free, Cousin Kevin(one of bass player John Entwistle's greatest compositions), Fiddle About(about the perverted Uncle Ernie), Tommy's Holiday Camp(another excellent ditty written by drummer Keith Moon whom did an excellent rendition in the film version of Tommy in 1975) and the classic finale We're Not Gonna Take It/See Me Feel Me.
The other tracks on the album It's a Boy, 1921(You Didn't Hear It), Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, The Acid Queen, Do You Think It's Alright, There's a Doctor I've Found, Tommy Can You Hear Me?, Smash the Mirror, Sensation, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson and Welcome are all great pieces as well though tend to be overlooked.
The album made The Who legends for good and peaked at #4 on the Billboard chart and was their first Gold seller(eventually Platinum).
In 1996, the album was re-released as a remastered CD but used different masters for the remixed reissue.
In October of 2003(just in time for Tommy's 35th Anniversary), Geffen Records(formerly known as MCA) re-released the album as a 2-disc Hybrid SACD with the original mix on the CD layer and a killer 5.1 mix on the SACD layer and this version uses the very original tapes that were found in Universal's vault after being said that the original tapes were destroyed by Kit Lambert in a fire. As a result of the discovery of the original tapes, the sound quality is amazing on here.
Disc two has great outtakes and demos like I Was, The Who trying to record Sally Simpson with hilarious results and instrumental versions of Tommy Can You Hear Me and Tommy's Holiday Camp among many other rarities plus a cool booklet with rare photos.

An apt salute to the six studio albums of boogie rock that the J. Geils Band had recorded between 1970-1975, this 1976 live extravaganza showcases the band at their best--performing live! It is also a capable followup to 1972's Full House, which remains one of the best live recordings of any American band in the 20th century!
Released at a time when live albums were big sellers (Frampton Come Alive, Kiss Alive, i.e.), this underated gem gives the band a chance to deliver their best songs with irreverent energy and unstoppable rythym that'll have you dancing within the first two minutes of the opening "Southside Shuffle" till the last chords of "Give it to Me"
Some may find Peter Wolf's banter a bit lengthy and/or annoying in between many songs on Blow Your Face Out! Others may find Wolf's pre-rap, D.J.'ish chatter a novelty....Either way it's in-your-face fun!

This album has great energy and captures the 'Live' J Geils Band experience very nicely. There is no comparison to actually seing this band live, but this (along with their "Full House" album) is as close as your ever going to get. I highly recommend it!

In the history of the J Geils Band, "Blow Your Face Out" is their definitive live work. This record came as their Atlantic years were ending. No one knew but soon the EMI America years would start and the fame of the band would be achieved but, at the time of "Blow Your Face Out", Geils was still struggling to become the great success they later attained. So, we can look at "Blow Your Face Out" as their summing up of their struggling years and showing the road warrior mentality and experience that all those years can provide on a record.

It's full of their old material and captures their well known knack as a live band. As someone who saw the band in that era, this live record is as close as it gets to having been at a show in the 70's.

"Monkey Island" was their final studio record for Atlantic but, in reality, "Blow Your Face Out" was their real swan song to their past at that point and shows a glimpse of the greatness that was to soon come at EMI America.

Buy the record. You'll love it.

Being a huge fan of J. Geils' "Full House," I was encouraged by some reviews here to believe that "Blow Your Face Out" was a similar live effort. But the only similarity is that they were both recorded live. "Blow Your Face Out" is funky and laid back. Not bad, if that's what you want. But anyone expecting something along the lines of Full House will be tremendously disappointed. In fact, "Lookin' For Love," which will knock your socks off on "Full House," is done as a slow, elavator Muzac tune in "Blow Your Face Out." Why did they even bother?

The energy level, which is consistently frenzied on Full House, rarely gets above "low" on "Blow Your Face Out." After listening to it twice, I realized there is no song on it that I want to hear again. Not that aren't a couple good songs on it. There just are no high energy songs other than House Party. I wasted my money.

Squeezing Out Sparks was not only Parker's finest moment, but it still stands up today as one of rock's best albums. When it was first released in 1979, Arista simultaneously issued Live Sparks, a collection of live radiocasts that featured the same 10 songs in the same order plus the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" and Parker's kiss-off to his former label, "Mercury Poisoning." The latter package was made available only to radio stations and critics, but it was a riveting live record worth all of the $40 it commanded on the collectors' market. Now Arista has reissued the 10 studio tracks and the dozen live tracks on an invaluable single CD. Included are two versions each of rock's best pro-choice abortion song ("You Can't Be Too Strong") and best Hiroshima song ("Discovering Japan"). --Geoffrey Himes

This is an album that came close to changing my life! In 1978 I first heard this while browsing for vinyl at the local college record store. Parker and the Rumour were playing, introducing me to what we called "new wave" at the time. Trouser Press used to debate whether Elvis Costello or Graham Parker was the best band of this new era of rock and roll, giving the edge to Parker because of the back-up band! History may have chosen differently, but this is an album that can still bring a tingle to your spine! If you have not heard it, you owe it to yourself to give it a listen. If you like it, then you need to find a copy of "Live--Alone in America" to hear the most stripped down, soulful version of someone who completely "gets it" even if his talent is not singing, but interpreting.

Poor Graham Parker. His timing was bad and this excellent album never got it's full acclaim. This was hist first album that attracted attention in the U.S. he was very inaccurately grouped in with the New Wave movement. When that petered out, he seemingly fell by the wayside along with all the other skinny tie groups. The problem was this was really a singer/songwriter/rocker. When he asserted his true identity, people viewed him as a former new waver shifting styles. I saw him open for a number of rock groups and he was booed off the stage. It is a shame b/c Graham Parker has a vast, rich body of work where he should have a better reputation as an accomplished artist. "squeezing out the sparks" ,I think, is his best work.

The singing is out front, the lyrics have meaning and sometimes, are effectively seething, and he is backed by a crack band. The guitar player employs the same tone throughout all of the songs which I like since the guitar becomes a vry recognizeable voice. The drumming is very simplistic and tribal and definitely enhances the songs. The production results in a pronounced spacing between the instruments. The musicianship is very good.

This is a great album so every song is excellent. There is no filler, no weak tune, no song is superior to the other.

I personally like "Local Girls" b/c it was released as a single in Chicago where I was first introduced to the album. "Discoverying Japan" "Can't be too Strong" "Nobody Loves You" and "Love gets you Twisted" are my preferences.

If this would have been release 3 years pre or post -punk and new wave, it would have reached a wider audience.

You will never know about this excellent album from radio airplay or publicity. This will always be a word of mouth artist. Its a shame b/c he was like a Brittish Springsteen/Mellencamp

To XraySpex: the song "You Can't Be Too Strong" is not anti-abortion. Listen to it again. If you knew anything at all about Graham Parker, you would know he is the furthest thing from a religious fundamendalist that you can get. The song doesn't take a stand one way or the other. It's simply *about* an abortion, and is likely a true story.

That aside, this is a legendary album that everyone should own. And with the Live Sparks promo added as a bonus, it's indispensible.

I bought the vinyl LP back went in came out in the late '70s (yep, I was still in the 8th. grade!) and to this day still drag it out and play it from front to end. I guess I can say that was one of the best things I ever bought with my allowance $$, LOL. Although it was a shame Graham Parker never received as much attention in the US compared to other artists who were of the "angry young men" school of rock, Squeezing Out Sparks was a great calling card to introduce his music to other people--so much so that at times I felt I could have collected some royalties myself for turning others on to Graham Parker! Fast forwarding to 1999: I got wired to the Net at home then quickly fell into a message board community of old school punk and new wave affectionados. The first person I was emailing on a daily basis was a fellow GP fan from Germany who noticed all the posts I wrote about Squeezing Out Sparks, also in his 30's at the time, who needed someone to help him better understand what most of the album's lyrics meant due to his limited English. One particular track I patiently explained to him on more than one occasion was "You can't Be Too Strong", that poignant anti-abortion song; I guess the angry, yet emotionally empty feelings Graham Parker used in his that song sang with much passion really confused him along with most of the phrasing that trying to graspe such a powerful song as a non-English speaker, and non British English to boot, was really overwhelming for him. We kept in touch for several months and at one point after finding Graham Parker's own website, my German friend went to look at it himself, sent an email to GP which Graham had personally answered!! =) My friend mentioned how Graham was pleased to have been emailed by a German fan, then GP being a big football player himself, the two of them talked about football teams then Graham had made a standing offer to play a little football with my fellow German GP fan should my friend ever visit England. Having heard him tell me about this conversation with our favorite singer almost make *me* feel like I had met "the man himself", too! Sometimes the Internet can be a wonderful thing! =)

The name "Brian Jonestown Massacre" may seem hokey, but it accurately sums up the band's aesthetic. Their key musical reference point is late Rolling Stones member Brian Jones, and their ramshackle, self-destructive vibe is all too reminiscent of Jim Jones, the Guyana cult overlord who killed himself and his congregation with poisoned vats of Kool-Aid. Strung Out in Heaven, the band's eighth release since 1995, is a retrodelic janglefest of Altamontian proportion. Blending the smarmy, drug-addled sonics of late-'60s Stones with the chime of the Byrds, the hooks of the Animals, and the monochromatic drone of Velvet Underground within their swirl of 12-string guitars, farfisa organs, and jaded vocals, Brian Jonestown Massacre cull some of the most head-spinning moments of '60s rock into a single, unified expression. But unified is the last word you'd use to describe their interband chemistry. Since they formed, they have been through nearly 60 members, and their live shows are as likely to end in a flurry of fists as a transcendent, stupefying jam. Swirling together such influences as the Velvet Underground, the Rolling Stones, the Byrds, Bob Dylan, the Spacemen 3, the Monkees! and any number of groovy sixties garage bands with a pinch (lyrically) of Charlie Manson?!, "Strung Out In Heaven" is one of the Brian Jonestown Massacre's tastiest albums though not their best. Songs like "Going To Hell", "Let's Pretend It's Summer" and the country flavored "Wasting Away" are like diamonds in the rough. "Jennifer" and "Lantern" are particularly Byrds-jangly. "Got My Eye On You" and "Nothing To Lose" are pure Velvets. I love BJM but must admit that the album's charms weaken after the midway point. Maybe it's just the drugs...

When I first listened to Strung Out in Heaven I liked it but I considered it my least favourite of the Brian Jonestown Albums. However over the years it has grown like some crazy forrest in my brain. It has the direction and coherence that some previous Brian Jonestown Massacre albums may have been missing. And it is a testament to the genius song writing that a catchy album like this can last. But these songs aren't just catchy pop songs, some of them are just down right beautiful. Yes beautiful, haunting calls through the halls of time.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre's "Strung Out In Heaven" is a classic, even if it (arguably) lacks the "wow" factor of a Radiohead or U2 album. It's just very well done. It's a great album to play in the background and also with high volume - it flows really well. Anton Newcombe's vocals aren't perfect, but they do fit the band's style well. Every track here is good, and there's even a good amount of great songs ("Going To Hell", "Wasting Away" and "Maybe Tomorrow" are some). It has a relatively good amount of appeal, though it's essentially just for indie rock fans. It also sounds a tad similar to The Verve. The instrumentation is great and the production is also crisp and clear most of the time. It sounds like country-influenced indie garage rock. What makes it "5" stars is that the lyrics are also incredibly interesting and catchy - this is definitely a bonus. It's just very pleasant - chances are you'll really like this album! Highly recommended!

This record really steams, it's amazing. "jennifer" is worth the purchase price alone."got my eye on you" is outstanding. this anton character is an amazingly underrated song writer! matt hollywood and joel gion also rule my universe. and the guitar riff in "dawn" might be the best sound ever made in music. you judge for yourself but really, really love this record. now it's on to "take it from the man!"

I think the BJM's music tends to be best experienced in layers, w/ repeated listens. After a few go-rounds I couldn't help thinking though that they sound a little tired on this one (not tired as in lame or unoriginal..just tired tired). But then again...I must not have been paying attention to the album title! Though it seems more like they're strung out in purgatory. One of the songs sounded like the same riff from "Not if You were the Last Dandy on Earth", but then the next time I heard it it sounded more like "Sister Ray" so I couldn't dock them any points for that. Its encouraging, that there's enough chaos in their sound-soup that new things happen when you are listening to something that is technically static. I had read later that this was their major label debut, or something to that effect, and I didn't feel like they had been particularly cheated by the industry with this disk. If you consider all of the strong albums they had released prior to this album, it is understandable that they might be a little played out by the time the industry finally took notice. With that said, it seems intriguing that they would release such a low-key album -- on their big chance, I don't detect a hint of strain in any of the songs. This may seem like a small point, but to my ears most rock bands over the last ten years or so sound like they do little else but strain. Then again maybe the BJM didn't have a choice...
