Like many other senior bluesmen, Delbert McClinton is getting back to basics: Nothing Personal, his first album for New West, is the raw, stripped-down sort of material that sounds best when you know it comes from experience. It is this sense of things seen and done that pervades every track, and which prevents songs like "When Rita Leaves" and "Don't Leave Home Without It" from lapsing into sentimentality. The more emotional, personal numbers--the album's title notwithstanding, this is a highly personal album--are balanced with high-energy material, though even these songs, such as "Livin' It Down," have a serious thing or two to say. McClinton also neatly avoids several clichés. Take, for instance, "Nothing Lasts Forever," which has, as a theme, the necessity of living life to the fullest without burning yourself out. One might expect such a song to be an uptempo rocker. Instead, it moves along at an easy, swinging pace, the musical personification of following a path of moderation. Nothing Personal is full of little touches and techniques like this, moving out of the realm of merely good, and into the ranks of art. --Genevieve Williams

Getting better with time!!.......2006-12-30
Great tunes, great grooves, great vocals!! Delbert's at the top of his craft to me right now. Great section, love Lynne Williams on drums. Delbert visits all the genres of Americana music encapsulating the pure tradition along with that distinct "Delbert" sound. The band is off the top on this disc, and will just flat groove you dealth. RIGHT ON DELBERT!!
Delbert is the best.......2005-09-20
I'm never disappointed by Delbert. I chose this purchase because I heard him recently singing the song, When Rita Leaves, and when I did the research - this was the album with the song. It's not often you hear a rhumba - and this one is great! I highly recommend this CD!
Delbert's the BEST of Texas music.......2005-07-31
Delbert has aged to PERFECTION. For the essential Delbert, you must get both Nothing Personal and Room to Breathe. Delbert's rocking is infectious, his wit is wry, his blues are pure Texas... he's simply THE BEST of Texas. Want some great humor and clever rhyming? Try Living it Down. When you listen to When Rita Leaves, you KNOW that man really did something awful to get a woman so mad that she... (you'd better listen to the lyrics). The joy of sex with a twist of humor? Try All Night Long. More sex? find it at the steamy Baggage Claim. The song I first heard by Delbert that got me wanting to hear more was Squeeze Me In...what a fun rocker. I'm proud to be from Delbert country!
His best.......2004-08-17
I thought "One of the Fortunate Few" would be Delbert's best ever, forever. I was wrong. This is great stuff here. Took me a few listens to really get into it, but it is GREAT. "Read Me My Rights" is just the greatest. "When Rita Leaves," "Desperation," 'Don't Leave Home Without It," are all top, top notch. This CD has variety and quality from start to finish. This isn't just GREAT DELBERT, this is GREAT ANYBODY!!
On the money..........2004-05-12
I've been a Delbert McClinton fan for 25 years or more. I had not bought anything in the last 10 years by him, so I recently bought this CD. Delbert financed it himself, took a year to record it, and released it in 2001. "Nothing Personal" did not blow me away. But I found it very easy to listen to. Good grooves, good feel. It's hard to believe he 60 years old. Anyway, I listened to it again. And again. I am not one to wear the grooves off any record (or should I say the pits off a CD), but in three weeks that I have had the CD, I must have played it through completely a couple of dozen times.
And are a few songs I stop and play again - simply because I like them. Songs like Squeeze Me In, Gotta Get It Worked On, Nothing Lasts Forever. He is so totally sincere in All There Is Of Me. Some really good piano and guitar playing. And Delbert's a soulful harp player.
It is an honest, sincere work with story lines I could certainly relate to, and I am sure others will too.

Album Description
Nothing Personal is a musical and lyrical romp through the lives of everyday people chronicled in frontline scenes that unfold in fragments, often out of order and step, as if projected on a slide projector in someone's living room on a cold, December day.
While the overall sound of Nothing Personal is that of a rock album, the music slips in and out of a variety of musical terrain providing a dynamic backdrop for McKay's lyrics. While dreaming of "golden theatres" and "constantine gardens" McKay's characters contront the reality of doing "everything that needs to be done" while just "hanging on just like we all must do." Sometimes it aint pretty even if it sounds nice, especially at high volume.
All the while, you listen as electric and acoustic guitars bounce the lyrics back and forth off a steady backdrop of solid rhythm. The production quality of Nothing Personal is worthy of a hearty lager and a mess of fish cakes from South Boston. So are the songs.

Nothing Personal.......2004-04-26
I really enjoy the Nothing Personal cd. This cd includes many acoustic song pieces. The cd has more of a pop/country sound to it, like a lot of today's music. The tone, the clarity, the mood that Mark McKay sets, and the state of mind that it places you in is very different from many cd's. This cd speaks differently to different people. For those who like pop/country music, Nothing Personal speaks most to them. Mark McKay's cd offers an entirely different level of communication to it's listeners than other cd's. Mark McKay's lyrics enable you to actually sit down and think about what he's singing; and many of his lyrics can also be related to different events going on in your life. Overall, Mark McKay's Nothing Personal cd is an extremely enjoyable, thought provoking album.

I am a big alt-country fan, but I am into rock and roll too, I can hang with Wilco and rock out with the Stones so if you are like me at all you will love this cd too. Especially Black and Blue Over You, but the best part is they are all great great arrangements and they are all rock and roll but thoughful too. Mark McKay's Nothing Personal is a great choice for anyone who just likes good music. I recommend the live album (Live from the Memory Hotel) too.
Mark McKay's Nothing Personal is fabulous.......2004-01-01
I am from Chicago and can't wait to see Mark McKay live. Friends of mine praise him and I agree--his songwriting is very close to perfect and his melodies are mesmerizing. Yet the music rocks. Anyone who likes Steve Earle REALLY has to check this music out. His brand new stuff I know is produced by Roscoe (one of Steve Earle's Dukes) and Roscoe is a lot to like too. There's a reason Roscoe is working with this guy. Check out Mark McKay's other album, Live from the Memory Hotel, too. It's a little twangy AND a little more rockin than this album, (strange but true) which tends to be a bit alt-country--but that's all fine by me.
Nothing Personal is great.......2003-12-25
There are two songs in particular on here: Constantine Gardens and Black and Blue Over You, that are classics and reveal why Mark McKay's songwriting is stand-out. There are a lot of fairly good roots-rock musicians around but typically their writing is more or less mediocre. Not so with Mark McKay. If Constantine Gardens does not actually move you to tears and If Black and Blue over you doesn't get your feet moving you need a hearing aid. It's that good. The words genuinely touch, and the music genuinely moves. Anyone who likes rock to country will love this cd and especially anyone who likes their music to straddle those categories. If you have ever loved Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Wilco, Ryan Adams or even the Hangdogs or Lucinda Williams, this cd will please and satisfy.
Nothing Personal Rocks.......2003-11-07
Someone made me buy this cd and it rocks! Black and Blue Over You and Ninety Miles rock out and I got to see him in concert soon....anyone know where this guy is? MARK MCKAY RULES sounds like rock and roll meets ROCK AND ROLL meets twang and gets moody. Give him two thumbs up.

Album Description
Kathy Tugman calls her music "alternative pop," meaning that it is based in a variety of popular styles (pop, rock, country, folk, ballads and story songs)but is unified through an emphasis on the importance of memory and external and internal landscapes in defining who we are, who we love, what we hope to be. The songs are tightly crafted but are open to a variety of musics and a range of influences, never forgetting that the soul is moved when the body is, too. The songs are built around Kathy's strong and varied vocal style, grounded on the rhythm section and driven by guitar on many tracks, piano on others. This is intelligent music that always wants to swing.
