Customer Reviews:
The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Finally Found.......2006-03-31
I named this title Finally Found because I've been looking for this Soundtrack CD for about 4 years and a half now, I finally purchased the CD a week ago and should be recieving it any day now and I can't wait.
I have been looking for it for so long because on this particular CD it contains a certain song that I been trying to retreive and it's called "Missing You" by "Monica" I really like this song because it made me feel what Stephen Baldwin was feelimg when he was telling Larry Fishburn in the diner about how the badguys killed his girl at his girls place, and while he's telling him all of a sudden you start hearing this music coming out of nowhere, then next thing you know you start hearing Monica singing really soft as if monica she knew what was going on.
I thought it was really touching and very sentimental, the song for that part to me was perfect. That's the reason why I've been breaking my neck backwards to find this CD I knew the CD existed but I could not find it, the search is over and I'm satisfied. The movie is great and full of action . I've never seen a movie like this before , it makes you laugh and it makes you cry, the movie is great, keep doing what your doing, keep up the good work. Thanks for making such a great soundtrack
Jlove,
The sound of the Fled soundtrack.......2003-03-27
This cd is one like I have never seen before.I have purchased the cd before and i only listen to 3 songs off of it and to me I will always buy a cd for one song. So I think that the cd could have been better but T-Boz,Monica and DJ Kizzy Rock did their best and held it down for the Fled soundtrack, that's why I rate this cd as three stars

Fine reissue of a classic set.......2006-05-24
Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.
This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.
Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.
My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

The best possible case for a rarely performed work.......2001-06-10
Brahms composed his Magelone cycle for a baritone (Julius Stockhausen, a good friend of the composer), yet the tessitura is almost tenor-like in some of the songs. Christoph Pregardien is a tenor with a baritone-like boom in his voice (as well as all the required low notes), hence he is an ideal interpreter of this warmly romantic song-cycle, as is clearly demonstrated on this disc. He and fortepianist Andreas Staier encompass all the varied emotions of this cycle. Youthful impetuosness and ecstasy, pensive reflection, tenderness, warm contentedness, despair, confusion, doubt, and quiet joy are all projected with utmost vividness, flowing tempi, and great variety of articulation (helped by the fortepiano) and dynamics. The inclusion of Vanessa Redgrave as a narrator (what warmth her voice has!) helps to make sense out of these songs, which are (in essence) lyric reflections of a "missing" narrative (unlike Schubert's "Die schöne Müllerin" and "Winterreise" where the songs themselves tell the story). This is by far the best interpretation of this song-cycle I've encountered (surpassing even Peter Schreier's recording). Anyone interested in Brahms or Lieder (or both) should acquire this CD without delay!

Wonderful recording.......2004-11-18
This might be my favorite holiday album. It's one of the first I pull out in November and doesn't get put away until February.
Bright and sparkling!.......2002-11-29
A perfect way to celebrate the Christmas spirit any time of year with some truly "old" favorites, performed with spirit and heart by the Baltimore Consort. Period selections imbued here with the consort's singular sound and creative improvisations include "Ding Dong Merrily on High", "The Old Year Now Away is Fled", "The Cherry Tree Carol", "Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day", "Es ist ein Ros", "In Dulci Jubilo", and many more that may charm you for the first time. The Baltimore Consort is: Mary Anne Ballard, viols and rebec; Mark Cudek, cittern, guitar, viols and bandora; Custer LaRue, soprano soloist; Larry Lipkis, viol, recorder and gemshorn; Ronn McFarlane, lutes; and Chris Norman, wooden flutes and pennywhistle; with Webb Wiggins on organ.
why to get this disc (in rhyme).......2001-11-24
'Twas the day after Thanksgiving, and all through the house, Christmas spirit was stirring and starting to rouse feelings of joy and expectation in the hearts of the people who were there. Beautiful music and Custer LaRue's singing filled the air.
Wonderful songs, written by people long dead, caused pictures to form and stories to dance through each listening head. Stories of a virgin bearing a child, stories of the little Savior's entrance into this world...meek and mild.
Each song is sung with such haunting beauty and care. The Consort's playing could not be more wonderfully fair. Each song is a masterpiece--"The Cherry Tree Carol," "In dulci jubilo," and "Quem pastores laudavere." Each song's focus is on the true meaning of Christmas--no appearance made by St. Nick--but with singing like this, in your head they are sure to stick.
More beautifully than snowflakes this music drifts down. In sheer loveliness, "Christmas Is My Name" deserves the crown. Oh but each tune is strong--like "Ding Dong Merrily" and "The Wren Song." Most come in at under three minutes each, none is overlong. Each is stunning...how can the listener go wrong? How they twinkle...they are most merry. One even makes mention of Cherries.

I highly recommend this disc.
A Christmas Favorite.......2000-12-09
Had enough of animated snowmen and over-sweetened carol arrangements? Here's a hugely enjoyable recording of songs and dances done with flair by the Baltimore Consort. There are a few familiar tunes, such as the lilting arrangement of "Ding, Dong Merrily On High" and a beautiful solo flute version of "Lo, How a Rose 'Er Blooming." But most the songs are off the beaten track, and are therefore fresh and new despite their antiquity. Custer LaRue brings feeling and energy into the songs. This has become the most played Christmas CD in our household.
Excellent performances and unique music.......1999-12-13
This is my favorite Christmas CD, and it is very different from everything else we hear this time of year.

Most people think of Christmas carols as originating from ancient--or at least olden-times, and indeed, many of the most enduring ones have survived for many centuries. Andrew Parrott and his Taverner Consort take us back seven centuries, in fact, and thoughtfully mix the old tunes ("Swete was the song," "This endere nyghth," "Nova! nova!") with more recent tunes. Parrott's musicians offer interesting takes on such familiar carols as "Silent Night" and "God rest ye merry, gentlemen." "Silent Night" sounds like an Austrian folk tune, complete with guitar accompaniment that reportedly was used in its original performance; "God rest ye..." is performed in the style of an English country church congregation--and uses a different tune from the one we usually hear. Various period instruments add to the color and flavor, and the arrangements are original and very effective. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
My favorite Christmas CD of all time.......2006-12-21
This collection of Christmas music strives for authenticity in performance, right down to Old French pronunciation in "Il est né le divin enfant." The carols are of varying antiquity and presented, not in order of age, but in an order that makes for an enjoyable listening experience, by contrast. There is precision in singing, use of period instruments, and presentation in original languages. It all adds up to excellence. Further, it brings joy and delight to the receptive ear.
Another reviewer said there wasn't any joy in these performances, and I say, "Humbug!" As beauty is in the eye of the beholder, joy is in the ear of the listener, and I couldn't receive this music without being transported to bliss.
As to the first track ("Veni, Veni Emmanuel") and audibility issues many have complained about, it's apparent that the a capella singing gets louder and louder as the chant progresses and we, the listeners, are being given the experience of sitting in a large cathedral as the choristers make their processional from the distant back of the nave up the center aisle and into the choir stalls in the chancel. That's why the music is barely audible at first and gets gradually louder, until it has full of volume. It's also why it's the very first track -- the choristers are processing in to begin the concert.
Hearing "Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht" performed using its original tune and what is held to be and very likely is the original guitar accompaniment from 1818 was a revelation -- I no longer sing the "improved" version of the tune that has become universal. It has the character of a Tyrolean folk song, light, joyous, reverent, and close to the hearts of the people singing and hearing it in that small Alpine church.
In fact, what's great about this album is that each carol conveys its original joy. The experience is enhanced by the welcome notes in the accompanying booklet that tell you about the history and background of each carol, the particulars of the version being performed, and more.
This CD is like a box of See's chocolates for the ear. The Taverner Consort, Singers and Players eventually came out with a second volume ("The Carol Album 2") and that's definitely worth having, too.
$9.99 at iTunes... just thought I'd mention it.......2006-12-05
CD sounds divine. If you want this album, thought you might like to know iTunes has it available for download for $9.99. I just mention that since most sellers are treating it like a hard-to-get collector's item, and charging some startling prices even for used copies.
My Very Favourite Christmas Album.......2005-12-25
Not only is this my own favourite, but so many friends have fallen in love with it hearing me playing it over the Christmas season, that I have frequently bought it as a (much appreciated!) Christmas gift. A wonderfully diverse mix of earlier Christmas music, performed with freshness and vigour. If I could only have one album of Christmas music in my collection, this would be it. (Messiah doesn't really count does it? It's not officially Christmas music!!)
Something different -- very enjoyable.......2001-12-16
If this very stylish album does not have something that will please you, you are just too hard to please. With carols spanning seven centuries, in French, German, and English, from the old world and the new, this is a comprehensive survey of the Christmas carol.
The performances are not arranged chronologically, but rather in contrasting and complimentary order, alternating unaccompanied with accompanied, vocal with instrumental. Both the vocal and instrumental ensembles have a range of styles and sonorities. Compare, for example, the brash open sound of "The Babe of Bethlehem" and "Glory to God on High" with the restrained pure sound of "This endere nyghth" or the full sound of "Christum wir sollen loben schon."
The booklet contains notes and texts as well as a list of players, but do not identify the various soloists.
fresh and witty.......2001-12-12
If you've never strayed into the Early Music racks, start here! And if you have 30" of Christmas CDs in your collection and half of them are Early Music and traditional, you're still going to love this! No muddy, pretentious, over-orchestrated stuff here. Just period instruments or fresh voices, and some gentle musical jokes. (The little-sung and wonderfully rhythmic "March of the Kings" instrumental starts out barely audible in the distance with the jingle of harness and bells, grows louder, then fades in the distance as though the magi and their magnificent procession had passed on. And "Il est ne', le divin enfant", which mentions the reedy voice of the musette, is played on one.)

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-10-29
All of John Danyel's music can be heard on this one recording, and from this music we can assume that he was a lutenist/singer. His approximate birth date was in 1564 and died somewhere around 1625. Although there exists only four solos for lute and two duets, in these six compositions Danyel displays considerable musical and technical ability. The paucity of so few pieces remaining can no doubt be blamed on the prevailing practice of improvisation: much of the surviving lute music was written down only by or for students. The twenty songs cover a great deal of style-secular,sacred,two short cycles (one a funeral elegy , and the other highly chromatic), a dialogue, dance-songs, a part song all of which make use of high quality poetry. The singers on this disc are highly skilled and experienced and sing these tunes with energy and skill. I was pleasantly surprised by Nigel Short's countertenor voice as I had not heard him prior to this disc.; and I'm wondering why I have not heard him,for his voice is very pleasing. The other singers: Libby Crabtree (soprano); Charles Daniels(tenor);Matthew Vine (tenor); Adrian Peacock (bass). David Miller (lute), Jacob Heringman(lute) and Mark Caudle (bass viol) make up the excellent instrumental ensemble. All in all, a very entertaining disc.

Wonderful! But Amazon's track list is incomplete..........1999-12-30
I agree with Jeffrey Stone's review that this is a delightful, spirited program in the style of the Baltimore Consort (and both groups share Mark Cudek).
The entire program is in 17th century styles (i.e. Baroque), and performed with energetic expression. I particularly enjoy the flexible continuo playing. The group's original arrangements in 17th century fashion are also marvelous; the only (very small) quibble I would have is that I think the "Il est ne, le divin enfant" arrangement would sound more natural if the group accented it on the opposite half of each measure (reverse the weak and strong alternation).
I'm writing mostly to correct problems with Amazon's listing:
"Apollo's Fire" and "Cleveland Baroque Orchestra" are not two separate entities. And the complete track listing is as follows:
1. Il est ne le divin enfant (instrumental) - trad. French; 2. Sussex Carol - trad. English; 3. The Old Yeare Now Away is Fled - trad. English; 4. Guillo, prends ton tambourin (inst.) - trad. French; 5. Noel Nouvelet - trad. French; 6. Sonate #2 in G Minor (inst.) - G. P. Cima; 7. Sonate #1 in D Minor (inst.) - G. P. Cima; 8. Sweet was the Song the Virgin Sang - trad. English; 9. Delightful, spirited renaissance Christmas program........1999-11-04
This is a delightful, spirited renaissance Christmas program. The instrumental ensemble of strings, lute, cittern, recorder, etc. plays in the style of the Baltimore Consort. Vocalist Sandra Simon has a sweeter voice than the Baltimore Consort's singer -- she sounds like an angel. Highly recommended.
