5 out of 5 stars These Cyns Are Good For You.......2007-05-08

"Twelve Deadly Cyns...and Then Some" is the offical greatest hits of Cyndi Lauper. The album was released in 1994 and is the best greatest hits of Cyndi's to date. The album features Cyndi's number one hits of her career, the album also features at that time three new songs made specially for this compilation, they are "Hey Now (Girls Just Want To Have Fun)", "I'm Gonna Be Strong" which is a re-recording of a song that Cyndi sang when she was with the group "Blue Angel" and "Come On Home". The album was released with similar packaging but track listings varyed based on which songs charted in various parts of the world. It's greatest sales success was in Japan where it went Platinum 5x. It's greatest chart success was in the United Kingdom where it reached #2 on the charts spending almost nine months on the chart, eventually going double platinum selling almost 900,000 copies. In the USA it reached Gold status. The album would go on to sell over four million copies worldwide. There was some issue with the division of royalties due to the wide array of co-writers on the various tracks that prevented Cyndi from releasing the longer version in the United States. The album was originally called "13 Deadly Cyns" and in fact a promotional cassette with this title (and an alternate track listing) was pressed and distributed in the United Kingdom in June of 1992. Out of all the Cyndi Lauper greatest hits compilations, this is the one to buy, it was released by Epic, where Cyndi still makes albums for.

P.S. - Better late, then never.

5 out of 5 stars Cyndi Lauper's Best Stuff.......2007-02-19

This is a compilation of all of Cyndi Lauper's greatest hits. If you are a fan of Cyndi's hugely beautiful voice and and her perky, positive New York attitude this is the CD to have. It has all of her hits plus two previously unreleased songs that are just as good. The lyrics of all songs are also provided. If you have just discovered how interesting Cyndi is, this is a lot cheaper than buying all her original CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Classic 80s.......2006-08-18

"Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" is probably one of the best 80s songs of all time in my opinion. I heard it at most dances in high school, including prom. I saw Cyndi in concert a summer during college and even twenty plus years later, she still looks young and sings great. The other songs on this album are great as well. Rock on Cyndi!

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't get much better.......2006-04-05

As an album it was my first Cyndi.
Heady tracks with percussion and bass, a voice so strong and unlike anything else I'd heard.
I was enthralled.
'I'm gonna be strong' as an initial track sets a high bench mark for the rest of the tracks.
'Time after time' the essential Cyndi classic, hard hitting and deep, a song full of loss that is given in complete contrast to the following song 'She bop' which is upbeat and funky, an enjoyable opposite.
'True Colors' takes it down a peg again, soft and sombre, bass tones that you can relax with and then up again with 'What's going on'.
A rollercoaster ride to be sure - this album led to me buying many more, the extent and depth of Miss Laupers range has not yet been exhausted it seems.
This is a very good album for anyone to start their collection of Cyndi with, I would also hazard to say that anyone who has never considered a Miss Lauper album would enjoy this as a one off to their collection.

Amazon.com essential recording

Whether playing Anna in The Seven Deadly Sins or singing "Moritat vom Mackie Messer" ("Mack the Knife"), Lotte Lenya helped define the music of her husband, Kurt Weill. The duo literally created the soundtrack for the prewar Berlin of our fantasies--an exotic land of nicotine and nightlights--where cabaret, jazz, and the odd American instrumental influence all coexist happily. Now remastered, this collection gathers Lenya's legendary 1957 recordings of Sins and her 1955 recording Sings Berlin Theatre Songs. Forget subtlety--Lenya is all about emotion. On cuts like "Pirate Jenny," Lenya's voice sounds fluttery and frantic, and on "Surabaya-Johnny," her German sounds fragile and sweet, but mostly she's just herself--bittersweet, raw, and (most of all) human. In spirit, Marianne Faithfull, PJ Harvey, and a host of others all kept the torch of Lenya's style going. But after listening to these Berlin theater songs in classic form (and in their original tongue), you'll never hear them the same way again. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars One of the greats.......2007-04-17

When I was a student in 1965, the turntable in my college apartment was kept busy spinning The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Broadway show cast albums, Nina Simone and Lotte Lenya. Lotte Lenya? Yes, the widow of German composer Kurt Weill and the star of the legendary 1950s off-Broadway revival of THE THREEPENNY OPERA, who also played James Bond's adversary Rosa Kleb in the movie FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE. (Rosa Kleb was a martial arts expert with poison knives in the toes of her shoes.) But my theory is that Lotte Lenya enjoyed great cachet with the baby-boomers primarily because of the cover of Bob Dylan's 1965 "Bringing It All Back Home" album. That cover shows Dylan and a brunette woman in a rather elegant setting crammed with books and phonograph records. Prominent among the stack of recordings is Lenya's "Berlin Theatre Songs of Kurt Weill" album. Even though this was the age of "Don't trust anyone over thirty," if Bob Dylan liked Lotte Lenya, then she was okay. I loved everything about her Berlin Theatre Songs album, from the expressionistic cover portrait to all the unfamiliar songs sung in quavery German.

Now that CDs have made phonograph records obsolete, I've wanted to replace my LP version of the Berlin Theatre Songs for some time. Well, I feel that I've hit the jackpot with this Masterworks Heritage CD reissue which is packaged with the Brecht-Weill THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS, an experimental dance-drama that Brecht and Weill created in Paris after fleeing Nazi Germany. I had never heard THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS. It is a revelation. It could have been written by no one else. The haunting melodies, the offbeat orchestrations and the unorthodox subject matter combine to form a Brecht-Weill classic. I love this music and have played it repeatedly for weeks. Lenya's voice during this period had not yet become raspy and her saucy personality shines through. My German is much better now than it was as a college student and I can at last appreciate Lenya's perfectly enunciated German. I find this recording mesmerizing. The CD is packaged as a foldout album/book, rather than a jewel box. It includes a brief essay by Teresa Stratas and helpful notes by Mario R. Mercado. Also included are more than a dozen sepia-toned photos of the recording session and four beautiful color photographs of Lenya in Hamburg in 1956. And of course, that wonderful Saul Bolasni portrait that graced the original LP is included on the inside cover of the jacket.

I think this CD is essential. For me, it conjures up a whole era, maybe a whole century. Five stars.

5 out of 5 stars I cannot live without this album. .......2006-06-09

The Weill/Brecht "Seven Sins" may not be as famous as the Threepenny, and it's certainly not as long. The songs aren't "catchy"-- no Doors or Darin or David Bowie or Dresden Dolls are going to cover any of the ballet's nine pieces. But, in all its operatic beauty, it's one of my favourite musical works on this planet.

In short: the Seven Sins is unbelievable. It's Brecht/Weill at their very best. It will latch itself onto your brain, stick its claws into your skull, surpass anything you've ever heard before. From the very start -- just three notes that will, I promise, make you shiver -- to the beautiful, melancholy ending; it's what opera should be like, and it's beyond perfect.

Miss Lotte Lenya, who was the smartest woman in the world for marrying Kurt Weill TWICE, sings what's probably the definitive version of Anna-Anna. Yes, it's two octaves lower than what was intended (but if it's high-pitched warbling you're after, I can highly recommend the lovely Anne Sofie von Otter version), and some people seem to be slightly allergic to Lotte's voice. Which I still fail to understand. She embodies everything Weill writes -- every word out of her mouth feels just right, just exactly the way it was intended.

One other version I'm particularly fond of is the one starring Marianne Faithfull. The differences are easy to spot: Marianne sings in English. Marianne sounds more stoic. Marianne's choir is more overwhelming, but smoother, though the pieces don't fit together quite as well. Marianne is just slightly faster, less emotional, slightly sweeter. Lotte, on the other hand, gives it everything she's got -- never holds back -- and fills the part with emotion. Lotte's choir is tinny, Berlin-y cabaret-y. Lotte's orchestra is much more solid. And Lotte toys more with the lyrics. Both versions are perfect, and I would VERY highly recommend buying both if you can afford it, if just to compare.

Just like Marianne's CD, this album is filled up with as much other Brecht/Weill stuff as would still fit on the disc. The final notes of the Seven Sins epilogue are quickly followed with a gorgeous full Mack The Knife (yes, uncensored), an unbelievable (and definitive) Pirate Jenny, an Alabama Song... pretty much everything these people are famous for, and even some rather obsure songs. The orchestra and background singers mix perfectly with Lotte's vocals on every track. There's not a single flaw -- not in the music, not in the recording quality, nothing -- every bit of it is as perfect as these songs get.

Whether you're just starting out collecting Berlin cabaret, or finally look to complete your collection, this album is simply something you can't NOT buy. So buy it. Buy it. Yes. Excellent. And, if you're searching for more excellent related stuff, here's some other CDs I can recommend:

- Die Dreigroschenoper: 1999 version, starring Nina Hagen, Max Raabe, HK Gruber
- The Threepenny Opera: 1954 Blitzstein adaptation (English softened version)
- Jasperina de Jong - Sieben Rosen hat der Strach (Brecht tribute)
- Cathy Berberian - The Unforgettable
- The Tiger Lillies - Twopenny Opera (It's One Cheaper)

And a final note: avoid the Ute Lemper version at all costs. She's a great singer, absolutely, but will never be Anna-Anna.

5 out of 5 stars Lenya and Weill at their best! Buy It........2005-11-04

'Lotte Lenya sings Kurt Weill's The Seven Deadly Sins and Berlin Theatre Songs' is a single CD combining two separate 1955 LPs recorded in Germany, five years after the death of husband and composer, Kurt Weill.

As a lifelong Weill fan who has heard many different interpretations of these songs most notably from Ute Lemper and Maria Stratas, I was struck by how dramaticly better was Lenya's performance of the lyrics. I think this goes far beyond the fact that many of these works were written specifically to be performed by Lenya in Berlin between 1927 and 1933. It is obvious to my ear that even though Lemper is a great cabaret singer, Lenya trumps this with years of performing on the live stage without the aid of electronic amplification.

Lenya does 'Die Sieben Todsunden' with the version done for a lower voice (same as Lemper) rewritten for her by Weill. As other reviewers have noted, this was originally a combination ballet / song cycle commissioned in Germany by George Balanchine where the singer and the ballerina perform two sisters, both named Anna.

None of the individual songs are nearly as popular on their own as the following collection of songs from the German works, 'The Threepenny Opera', 'Mahagonny', and 'Happy End'.

My first encounter with Lotty Lenya's singing was on a Columbia collection done on vinyl in the 1960s, done, probably following on her appearance in the second James Bond movie, 'From Russia, With Love' as the Russian Colonel Klebb. I think this recording is far superior to that issue or to any other recent recording where Lenya does songs she never performed on the stage.

Throughout the 1980s, "We are the Scorpions!" was lead vocalist Klaus Meine's concert-opening battle cry, energizing and readying the faithful in sold-out stadiums for a Teutonic onslaught of vital, sometimes plodding, eardrum-splitting rock anthems. In short, the arena-rock monsters were never a picnic-under-the-stars kind of band ... until Moment of Glory. The new millennium brings the Scorpions full circle, melding in-your-face party anthems like "Rock You Like a Hurricane" (now called "Hurricane 2000") and "Big City Nights" into fully orchestrated concoctions featuring the Berlin Philharmoniker. Where the grandiose likes of "Wind of Change" and "Still Loving You" are obvious choices for such a pairing, and indeed, work well, the "Deadly Sting Suite," with almost unrecognizable instrumental versions of "He's a Woman, She's a Man" and "Dynamite," will likely catch the unknowing fan of classic Scorps off guard. Both Deep Purple and Metallica have used full orchestras to accent their songs with mixed results, and the same goes for the Scorps. There's a fine line between wine-and-cheese classical fare and whiney and cheesy metal. Here the Scorpions teeter, if often gracefully, on that line. --Katherine Turman

4 out of 5 stars Got me hooked on Scorpions.......2007-04-12

I absolutely love the marriage of rock and symphony here. It's gorgeous. The Scorpions take already amazing songs and pump them up an extra notch. A long time ago I heard "Still Loving You" on the radio, not knowing who sung it. It took me years to finally discover the Scorpions. I own two different versions of "Still Loving You," and I far prefer this one to the original. It gives me this yearning inside. The only thing I don't like about this album is the guest vocalists. I love Klaus Meine. He adds an ethereal element to the music, and with the guest vocals, it takes away from the beauty, in my opinion. But don't let that deter you from getting this, because it is so worth it. "Rock You Like a Hurricane" is amazing! It's all amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Moment of Glory.......2007-04-01

With metal music it is always louder is better and this album found one of the coolest ways to make metal louder. Combining the Scorpions with a the Philharmonic creates one of the coolest sounding albums I have ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars [].......2007-03-14

i dont own this album but i have heard the songs off of it and i think their all great and performed well. and also as a side note since i read alot of comments about the guest vocals on "big city nights" but no mention of who: it is Ray Wilson best known for replacing Phill Collins in Genesis and recording the classic Calling all Stations

1 out of 5 stars dynamite!.......2002-10-21

Just when you think the scorpions couldn't do worst...they prove you wrong!
Even Metallica's s&m is better...close but still.
I am sure that it was a great experience to live, for the band and the audience, because that type of event is always unique and can bring strong emotions-unless you have a dumb..s sitting next to you, drinkin' beer and screaming every five minutes Dynamiiiiiiite!!-but on cd...for me it doesn't do it,but it probably is a treasure for those who were there.
Now, I'm not gonna start the debat with DEEP PURPLE and the LSO(1999) but I was there at the Royal Albert Hall and that's why I can understand the concept and the thrill of holding the recording of such concerts...but still DEEP PURPLE 's symphonic album features something that neither Scorpions or Metallica holds...and this is an ORIGINAL PIECE OF MUSIC CREATED FOR A GROUP AND A ORCHESTRA!

5 out of 5 stars Truly a Moment of Glory for the Scorpions!.......2002-07-31

AWESOME is how I would sum up this CD. From the moment I first heard it, I knew I HAD to have it. Buy it! You won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!.......2007-02-23

Great music performed by one of the best orchestras in the world. What more can you ask for?Ron Goodwin is a genius. The music that he wrote is incredible. His best pieces are featured here on this cd. From the great marches like " Force ten from Navarone" to great romantic sounding pieces like "Deadly Stranger" and the love theme from 633 Sqadron. I also really like the selections from "Monte Carlo or Bust"(almost seven minutes long) and the selections from "Those magnificent men in Their flying machines" (six minutes long). Rumon Gamba and the BBC Philharmonic do a great job performing all the pieces, and add another great cd to the Chandos movie series. This is a must have for fans of Ron Goddwin or great film music in general. It well deserves the 5 stars and maybe even more.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable!.......2007-01-10

Ron Goodwin is a fine composer. I particularly enjoyed listening to the music from the early 1960's Miss Marple films, starring Margaret Rutherford. But, to let one know; the Marple music is different from most of the Goodwin scores on this CD. His music is mostly of the rousing march or military variety.

5 out of 5 stars None Better.......2006-10-31

Goodwin's music is outstanding. His World War II scores are outstanding. They have drive and purpose. They sound good too.

4 out of 5 stars those magnificent men in their flying machines.......2005-08-05

This CD provides a range of music mainly from films and concerned with epic war dramas all from the pen of the well known Ron Goodwin. Films such as 633squadron, submarine - X, operation strongbow, force ten from navarone, where eagles dare are just some which are represented. I was particularly looking for the title'Those magnificant men in their flying machines' to add to a slide show of vintage planes in flight and on exhibition. This fitted the bill just fine.

Set in dark, slickened streets and populated by a stellar ensemble cast, this adaptation of Frank Miller's hard-edged, film noir inspired graphic novels plays like comic-book-come-to-life—not surprising, as Miller is credited as Robert Rodriguez's co-director (with a bit of help from Quentin Tarantino). The soundtrack to this bleak, compelling exercise in pure noir stylism is provided mostly by director Rodriguez, with an occasional assist from past collaborators John Debney (Spy Kids and its sequel) and Graeme Revell (From Dusk Til Dawn). While their largely synth-driven cues tend naturally towards brooding atmospheric soundscapes, their tense electro-rhythms are seasoned with bracing doses of sinewy, sensual sax and dotted with the occasional bongo flourish, details that musically evoke both a shadowy humanity and the film's genre-savvy roots. Also featuring disparate, yet wholly integrated contributions from techno-house savants Fluke (the hypnotic "Absurd") and 20th century Mexican classicist Silvestre Revueltas, it's the sinister flipside to the future-jazz sheen of Vangelis' classic Blade Runner.--Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars trailer music.......2006-08-06

i listened to the servant song and i know everyone said its pretty well known that that is the song they used in the trailer, but if you listen to "broken chairs" by built to spill it really sounds like parts of the trailer music too. and its also a good song. so i would recommend trying that as well!

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2006-01-17

Now, i loved the movie, but the soundtrack blew me away! all the songs fit the movie perfectly. However, it is missing the instrumental version of "Cells" by the Servants, which plays on the DVD title menu
so, here you go:

Instrumental Version!
Have Fun

3 out of 5 stars sin city.......2005-09-30

Is a very good soundtrack because i think that Robert Rodriguez has made a great choice with the composers and his own musical composition

5 out of 5 stars Go Here if you want Cells download.......2005-09-27

While the previous reviwer was correct that Cells the trailer song is not on the soundtrack, Servant did indeed create an instrumental version and you can obtain it at this link follow the instructions it is at the Servant website so its legal and its for a limited time only!

Your Welcome ;)

4 out of 5 stars An addendum to "FangsFirst" comment.......2005-09-16

FangsFirst is absoluty correct -- trailer music is almost never on the movie's soundtrack. An interesting additional bit of trivia, however; almost all trailer themes ARE from a movie soundtrack, just from a DIFFERENT movie than the one the trailer is for!

So if you're looking for "Cells" by The Servant (the song from the Sin City trailer), take a look at the soundtrack to Transporter 2. You'll find it along with another song by The Servant. "Cells" does have lyrics to it (which aren't on the Sin City trailer), but it's still a damned good song.

Just thought I'd share that with everybody.

5 out of 5 stars I used to love me some Salt............2006-09-22

Salt n Pepa came hard on their second release back "88". The undisputed first female sex symbols of rap repped hard with tracks like Syncopated Soul Power (Salt's Solo), Everybody Getup and Let's Get Paid(Pepa's Solo).
Shake your thang was also hot(Which could have been called Doin the Butt Part II).

4 out of 5 stars Very old school, timeless vintage rap.......2006-01-29

I know I know, comparing this trio with modern day rappers is like comparing apples to watermelons, But these ladies was so real with their stuff you cant put a candle to them. I feel that salt n peppa had the market when it came to rap as a female trio and yes most of their songs everyone could listen to without having to chase little kids out of the room! if you have the old LPs of this little gem, it is worth some money......

5 out of 5 stars Here is another old school hit.......2004-10-21

This SNP album is hot. I liked when I first listened to it. I think I was in the 5 or 6th grade. If you want some old school to listen to, this is a must have. Hits like "Get Up" and "Solo Power (Get Paid)" are most memorable.

4 out of 5 stars "Okay now here's the deal, Pep bust it...".......2004-03-25

You HAVE to had grown up during the era of this album to TRULY appreciate it. I used to carry my radio around EVERYWHERE and play this TAPE, yes I said TAPE, ALL the time!! Salt n Pepa are true pioneers in the rap game that was, back then, dominated by men. With this being their sophomore album, it stil stands strong even today. Maybe it's just me being nostalgic and all, but I was feeling this album when it came out and if my tape hadn't worn out, I'd still be rockin' it today! So now I have to buy the CD...

5 out of 5 stars And I know because of KRS-One.......2007-05-19

JUST-ICE's influence on music cannot be understated. Although his most immediate impact was on his fellow heads, his music has been sampled by artists from Sublime to Thievery Corp. Do yourself a favor and try to track down the 12" vinyl version of Na Touch Da Just/ Freedom of Speech '88, it contains a full-on 7 & 1/2 minute version of Na Touch that kills. If you are here lookin' you must be doin' something right, now buy it. We need more peace and love in '07. Keep on rockin' to '08.

4 out of 5 stars Great Gem of Golden Age NY Hip-Hop.......2007-05-10

Just-Ice's first album, "Back to the Old School" was released in 1986. The follow-up, 1987's "Kool & Deadly: Justicizms" continued the trend of street-and-jeep-friendly hip-hop anthems from Just-Ice, a.k.a. `Sir Vicious'. His first album was produced by Kurtis Mantronik, but "Kool & Deadly" was produced by Boogie Down Productions' KRS-One (the late DJ Scott La Rock was supposed to be involved, but was tragically murdered before the studio sessions began). After years of being out of print, Traffic Recordings revived the Sleeping Bag/Fresh catalog to the joy of 80's era hip-hop fans.

    Pros:
As produced by KRS-One, all the nine songs (eight originals plus a CD-bonus remix) have a sonically-sparse, unadorned sound that can be summed up as `beat--bass--scratch'. But with Just-Ice's forceful baritone, that's all that's needed (special acknowledgement to Just-Ice's human beat-box man, DMX, not to be confused with the famous rap artist of recent years). Most of the songs are effective battle-raps, though Just chooses to open the LP with "Going Way Back", giving an oral history of hip-hop's origins in the Bronx, NY. The artist's dancehall reggae influence shows up on several cuts, the best of which is "Moshi*up", with KRS-One. KRS-One chimes in on several songs, but this is far from the guest-star heavy hip-hop releases of today. You really get a full dose of Just-Ice's personality, warts and all.

    Cons:
The casual sexism of even golden-age hip-hop creeps into the beat-box-driven "The Original Gangster of Hip-Hop" (on this dirtier, alternate take of his first LP's "Gangster of Hip-Hop", Just goes into lurid detail on how he gets down with a lady) and is blatant on "Booga Bandit B***h". The inclusion of only one 12-inch remix "Freedom of Speech `88" is rather conservative (the album still runs at barely 50 minutes); perhaps not all of the masters were readily available, but there were probably at least a handful of 12-inch/EP cuts to choose from (radio edits, instrumentals) during the album's original release. Also, there was definitely a music video produced for "Going Way Back"--that would also have been a good inclusion (in CD-Rom or DVD-Rom form).

    5 out of 5 stars Its PERFECT.......2006-08-30

Lyric Lickin!!! Thats all I have to say! WoW, what a great record. Of course though, when KRS-1 looks at you as one of his favorites its for a good reason. This dude is one of the illest to ever bless the MIC. A MUST HAVE for all hip hop lovers!!!

5 out of 5 stars Another Production by the Blaster Master.......2006-05-29

Just-Ice is one of the best lyricist to date. His raw sound is very real and his grammar consistent. "BACK TO THE OLD SCHOOL" which is his debut album is what hook me to "THE JUST". I think KRS-ONE brought something out of Just-Ice that Mantronik didnt bring out!! Mantronik (even though he is a hell of a producer) didnt out do KRS on production they both did a good job with Just-Ice!!!!!! A real hip hop head most have this cd or dont call yourself a hiphopper at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars When Real Meant Balance.......2006-02-16

One of the things I appreciated about Just Ice is that he was a street cat that CLEARLY didnt want you to end up where he had been. He never glorified anything and he truly was "for the kids". I will never forget the first time I saw him on Rap City on BET (Yo MTV what?). He was talented raw and more love for Hip-Hop than he did for his ego.

A Small Deadly Space sounds less like Pantera than did Fight's first release, War of Words, and more like vocalist Rob Halford's former band, Judas Priest. There are still plenty of superheavy Pantera-like riffs, but having more input from the entire band (the first album was written almost entirely by Halford) has given this album more dynamic range and a larger variety of sounds. There's even a semi-ballad, "In a World of My Own Making," that brings to mind classic Priest. --Adem Tepedelen

I'm a Halford fan,but I couldn't even listen to this album in it's entirety.I ended up flicking through the remaining tracks hoping to find at least one half decent track, but it was not to be.Halford's first Fight album[War of Words]which I recommend highly, was great, maybe because it was all composed by him.All the tracks on this one sound the same.If you don't want to waste your hard earned cash,go for his Resurrection or perhaps,Crucible.Steer clear of this one.YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

5 out of 5 stars Better than War of Words.......2006-11-02

Halford shows he's still the best and the guitar work just creates a rhythmic pounding pulse that keeps your head bobbing up and down. "Small Deadly Space" "I Am Alive" and "Legacy of Hate" are my favorites.

    Keep rocking Rob!!

1 out of 5 stars Old schoolers, beware.......2005-11-17

For me, this was the "let's pretend that we have been influenced by Stone Temple Pilots and ALice in Chains, so let's try and redo the Temple of the Dog album." As has already been stated, stick with the first Fight release.

4 out of 5 stars still evolving, but still great.......2005-04-20

Rob Halford's project, Fight, are back with their second (and last) studio album after War Of Words. And while I find this album very different, I also think it is very good. The songs on here are catchy, with a good groove (the last one starts a little ballad-y, but they're all good). However , the tempo is slowed down significantly from the first album, which was much more of a thrash album than this. I give this 4 stars (heck, I could even go 4.5) as it is a very good metal album, but not just great. If you are a fan of heavy metal, specifically Rob Halford, you will probably enjoy this album.

    1 out of 5 stars I Feel Cheated.......2005-02-11

One of the blackest days in Metal history has to have been when Rob Halford left Judas Priest. It seems with Halford's departure all parties involved forgot how to write enjoyable, good rock n' roll. Priest of course went on to re-record a couple of variations of their Painkiller album; Jugulator and Demolition with a Rob Halford karaoke contest winner, which had real Judas Priest fans just shaking their heads. Halford's first solo stop was the band Fight. This is the second album from "Fight", and it's even more forgettable than the first "War of Words". I remember listening to this thing when it first came out...and thinking, "Judas Priest was disbanded so Halford could do this thing???!!" Seriously...in place of the great melodies, the back and forth guitar work, the fantasic songwriting found on any Priest album....Halford is now fronting a band that plays 2 or 3 guitar chords as fast as possible, and that's it. No songwriting, Halford's unique vocals are wasted. I mean during the 90's we could have gotten 4 or 5 more Priest albums, I mean real Priest albums with the original frontman...instead we are left with this forgettable mess. "Blowout in the Radio Room" is really the only stand-out song on the disk....and that's because it sounds completely different from everything else on the album. Other than the one tune, there is no reason to subject yourself to this thing. After listening to this you will understand why "Fight" only lasted two albums.

If the Deadly Snakes ever come to your town, you better go. You owe it to them. I've often wondered how their 6 piece band, complete with horns are able to eat while touring given the small dives I've seen them in. It used to be, for me, that anything produced by Greg Cartwright drew my attention (still true, check out the second Horrors record on In The Red records), but while I came for Greg Cartwright, I STAYED for the Deadly Snakes. Dark and frantic, it's not garage and not quite soul either...the D. Snakes are hard to pin down for somebody and eventually you have to stop trying. To quote an old gospel song, they live the life they sing about in their songs. You owe it to them to pay to see them, you owe it to yourself to see one of the best live bands in the world right now.

Buy "I'm Not Your Soldier Anymore" and "Ode To Joy" and "Porcella" and "Love Undone". Buy the Reigning Sound CDs too. All those CDs are on In The Red Records and they all slay dragons and fatten frogs for deadly snakes.

Having bought and loved both of the first two albums by the Deadly Snakes, I rushed out to get this one the day of realease. I have to admit, however, that I had prepared myself to be a little let down - after all, how many bands get better as they continue? Well, I'm VERY pleased to say that's exactly what has happened with the Deadly Snakes - this is by FAR their best album to date. They've married their love of garage rock, soul, blues and gospel more perfectly here than any band since the Rolling Stones circa 1972. I would also go on to say that it would benefit any one exploring the current crop of new "garage rock" bands to pick this up right away - the likes of the D4, Datsuns, Von Bondies, ect don't hold a candle to this group.
