Album Description

By the mid-'70s, Boz Scaggs had amassed a varied body of work, rocking out in the late '60s with Steve Miller and laying down some molten blues with Duane Allman and the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section before moving ever closer to full-blown soul music on a series of solo albums.

2 out of 5 stars Don't Bother--sound is poor-not much Les Dudeck guitar.......2007-07-21

Boz Scaggs fans should not be suckered into this live cd recorded at Paramount Theatre Oakland in 1974. The band includes Les Dudeck and that is why I bought it. Many songs on it but the sound in muffled thruout and the stereo is poor. I do not think Boz would have approved this release if he knew about it. His latest live album is 100% better. Les is on this album but rarely do you hear him. It seems somebody taped the concert on subpar equipment and is trying to make some bread. Boz fans beware--skip this one---it is a big disappointment.!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Some of NWA's best work is on this EP.......2006-09-01

Back in 1990 NWA released 100 miles and runnin as a prelude to the forthcoming album Niggaz4life, though short at only 4 actual tracks (Kamurshol is just an advert for the next album) it contains some real great songs. The opening song is the title track 100 miles and runnin which is decent song but in my opinion the weakest on the album. Just Don't Bite It is an MC Ren solo and it's brilliant, the title should tell you all you need to know about the song. Sa Prize is a sort of follow up to the classic F**k Tha Police with a funky beat showcasing Dre's improved production skills but the best track by far is Real Nig*az, the famous Ice Cube diss. Ice Cube came back hard with No Vaseline and really won the battle but this is still a great track with another funky Dre beat and some great lyrics from him and Ren.

In it's time it was a great EP however there is no point in buying it now as you can get all these tracks on the re-release of Niggaz4life (in fact Real Nig*az was released on both originals anyway), but besides that it is still a great EP and was the start of a new era with Ren as lead emcee and Dre's great new production style.

5 out of 5 stars Still Runnin Strong.......2005-12-15

This EP is one of N.W.a's high points proving they were going to on without Ice Cube and even stronger without him and in my opinion is there second best piece of work next to S.O.C Here is a quick rundown:

100 Miles and Runnin-10/10 Like Straight Outta compton a very forceful entry and surprising beat

Just Dont bite It- 8.5-9/10 Preety funny but kinda a let down after such a forceful entry song

Sa Prize-10/10 This was just amazing best part of the CD great beat

Real Niggaz-9.5/10 Real good beat and good lyric delivery especially M.C Ren

Kumorshal-I wont really count this do to it is just a advertisment for Niggaz4Life but the beat is really good

4 out of 5 stars 100 MILES AND NOT STOPPIN'.......2005-11-05

TO ME THIS WAS JUST A PREQUAL TO WHAT WAS YET TO COME...
SOMETHIN' TO HOLD YOU OVER 'TIL THE NIGGA4LIFE ALBUM...
IT DEFINATELY TEASED THE AVERAGE N.W.A. FANS...
IT MADE YOU EITHER GIVE UP ON THEM OR DROOL FOR WHATS NEXT.
I LIKED IT !!!
IF I HAD TO DESCRIBE THIS EP IN ONE WORD IT THE WORD WOULD BE
F O R E P L A Y OR F O U R P L A Y
DUE TO HOW THEY PLAYED WITH THE FANS DURING 4 TRACKS.

2 out of 5 stars Worst NWA album.......2005-05-06

I didn't like this EP album when it came out. It seems so slapped together. Straight Outta Compton and N---for Life are better albums than this hacked up effort. Dr. Dre's production is lousy here compared to his more superior efforts. They even attacked former member Ice Cube in their lyrics! How cold! MC Ren doesn't have his best lyrics and Eazy-E's sex-driven lines are overblown here. Only Just Don't Bite It is the best song here. The rest of the album is disjointed garbage! And compared to Ice Cube's solid 1990 debut album, this NWA album was weak. Cube outdid them at their own game that year.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT EP.......2005-01-20

This EP is awesome. I will now rate each song on this EP:

1) 100 Miles And Runnin'- 5/5: Classic song! Great rapping & good beat.

2) Just Don't Bite It- 5/5: Funny as! Gets stuck in your head. I love it how they take dirty quotes out of other movies and shows and edit them into the chorus.

3) Sa Prize, Pt. 2- 5/5: Great song. The beat is unbeleivably catchy.

4) Real Niggaz- 4/5: Good song.

5) Kumurshol- ---: Just a ad' for "Efil4zaggin". Good beat though.

One would be hard-pressed to find a band more perfectly symbolic of the good-times politics-be-damned esprit de cannabis that symbolized a good chunk of 70's rock. While the Beach Boys were busy becoming an anachronism, the Doobs effectively took their mantle, fusing an array of musical Americana--be it blues, country, folk, or gospel (they saved jazz and funk for their Michael McDonald-fronted incarnation)--into a remarkably popular string of albums and radio hits by simply asking not much more of us than to "Listen to the Music." And if they didn't get much more controversial than to declare "Jesus Is Just Alright," well, that was kind of the point. This Rhino anthology is typically exhaustive. All the familiar radio hits are here, as well as a good sampling of deep catalog from the band's various line-ups, not to mention a few standout Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons solo outings. Hardcore Doobie Bros. fans should be especially pleased by the fourth disc, which contains a wealth of outtakes and demos from the band's early '70s and '80s prime. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice box set for the critical underdogs of rock.......2006-07-05

Although they never garnered the critical praise of The Band, Mott the Hopple, CCR there were few bands that could hold a candle to the hit making strength of The Doobie Brothers. This collection gathers up a healthy sampling of their singles, best album tracks and rarities in a four disc set. While I would have paired back the selections from the band's weakest albums (including the awful "One Step Closer") (hence 4 stars), this collection doesn't skimp on the band's worthwhile output from their peak years.

Sound quality is exceptional with a crisp detailed sound not heard before. Since fans will probably be familair with the bulk of the tracks here I'm only going to focus on the fourth disc with the bonus tracks. We get a number of good demos including Pat Simmons' "Daughters of the Sea","Four Days Gone", "Pat's Song"; Tom Johnston's "Osborne" (an early version of "Long Train Runnin'), "Lovin' My Way Back Home", "Peace in the Valley" all of which are strong tunes. "Bluejay" is also quite good and with "Peace in the Valley" one of the highlights here. It's a pity these songs never showed up on an album before now. "Armadillo Death Chang" is interesting as well--Johnston appears to have had a problem with song titles much like George Harrison in many cases as the title has absolutely nothing to do with this rockin' tune.

"Outside of Barstow" is a demo with just Johnston and his guitar and, again, is a terrific little song that should have been revisited. "Spiel" is a John Hartman composition (the only solo composing credit the drummer received)that's really more of a joke track. I haven't listened to "Olana" in a while but this studio version of the Michael McDonald track is better than the live version from the 1983 final tour recording.
The rest of the material was released in one form or another and these are either demos or alternate versions of the final tracks. We also get demos for "Sweet Maxine", "Shuffle" two demos from Michael McDonald "Takin' It To The Streets", "We Would Sail Away" both of which are strong demos. A Live version of "Jesus is Just Alright" from the live album sessions in 1982.

The booklet has lots of rare photos, interviews and features the band discussing the changes over the years. If you purchased the most recent greatest hits release (2001)the text and photos from the booklet are the same. I was disappointed that there wasn't a DVD (much like the recent Pretenders set) as these guys in their prime were a powerhouse on stage. The four stars reflects the fact that the there could have been more previously unreleased material. I was hoping that the four tracks that Tom Johnston completed for "Livin' On The Fault Line" but withdrawn from the album would have been included but no such luck.

3 out of 5 stars Great for work..........2006-01-31

I found this at a wherehouse club for $38. There isnt a ton of gold to mine (even Michael Macdonalds 'You belong to me' is already on their expanded 20 track Greatest Hits.) I am a big fan of box sets and always ready to listen and learn. Its a good overview including the Michael Mcdonald songs from the 1976 Takin' It To The Streets album and a healthy sampling from Minute By Minute and One Step Closer.

5 out of 5 stars Missing track.......2005-03-04

Just a quick complaint about a great box set of Doobie magic, one of my fave tracks "Without You" ain't on it, was so disappointed!. But overall a great selection of all their classics and more.

5 out of 5 stars A box full of good stuff.......2004-03-19

70's music has become my favorite period of music. In an era of great singers and bands like The Eagles, Carly Simon, Steve Miller Band, the Doobie Brothers are one of my favorites, and while they may not have been anything revolutionary with the genre, they did very well. No major politics or religous preachings, the Doobies were about good fun and good music. LONG TRAIN RUNN'IN is a Doobie Brothers box set with 4 discs full of music, a large booklet of info and pictures. The first 3 of 4 discs are divided up for the most part among the band periods. The first being the early rock n' roll with country mix thrown in, the second being the closing of their rock sound (which never sounded better again) and getting into more of a groove with Michael McDonald joining and the band reaching their highest point ever. The third album closes up the smooth sounds of Michael McDonald and repoens the group with almost the same lineup as they did on the Toulhouse St album + roadie turned conga player Bobby LaKind for what sadly could be called their two "bad 80's albums". (Hey, I like the Cycles album and Brotherhood is tolerable, but neither one touches Stampede or The Captain and Me, even on their best day). An addition at the end is only available on a japanese import of the Sibling Rivalry disc, which is their cover of "Little Bitty Pretty One" Some of the tracks on these discs denote a "single release" in which things like extra singers (HERE TO LOVE YOU) are added or the song is shorter, in the case of WHEELS OF FORTUNE much shorter.

As I said a fourth disc is included which is the true gem of the album which includes rare cuts, demos and unreleased songs mostly from the groups beginings. Many are recorded complete with mistakes and talk from a crew or band member. Others are real early concept songs for later albums. One noteworthy cut is Sweet Maxine without the piano playing! The crown jewel on the disc is the studio produced song OLANA which is a song that I think could have really spiced up the McDonald years, along with others like it. The only other way to get this baby is a live version on the imported farewell concert disc. ARMADILLO DEATH CHANT is another great one. Other note, the BLUE JAY track is different then the one on the elusive EXCITEMENT import disc.

Sadly there are a few marks off but not enough to change my opinion in saying that this is a fantastic collection, but here they are anyway.

1 No DAUGHTERS OF THE SEA on the fisrt disc, the demo that you get with the box is nice, but this is one of my favorite songs and it takes me to a better place when I hear it.

2 No HOW DOES THE FOOL SURVIVE on disc 3, Jeff Baxter's minute and a half guiter solo at the end is one of the best I've ever heard.

3 No RIO on disc 2. Another good one.

4 No inclusions of the 87 reunion concert in which EVERY band member (sans the original bass player) participated in. That would have been sweet to hear.

Most of those complaints are trivial since NO boxed set ever gets all of what somebody wants. It's sadly give and take. The rest of the set is awesome and even if you already have all of the albums, and the fourth disc is warrant enough to purchase. Great set. Too bad there probably won't be another

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2003-06-17

If you are a big fan of the Doobie brothers, you must get this box set (Unless of course you own all of their other albums). It includes almost all of my favorite Doobie Brothers songs. The only songs I missed that weren't included, were: Something you said, flying cloud, without you, tell me what you want (and I'll give you what I need), evil woman, Ukiah and the captain and me. Four of these can be found on the Captain and me cd, however. The Doobies were my favorite band in their hayday. I think a great job was done in selecting the best songs from each album. Usually most box sets omit many essential songs from albums. This is one of the best box sets that I've seen.

4 out of 5 stars Lockhart's Debut Recording with the Boston Pops.......2004-08-13

RUNNING WILD is collection of Glenn Miller favorites and is Keith Lockhart's debut recording with the Boston Pops Orchestra. The musical quality is good. While it does not demonstrate the style that Lockhart would later develop with the orchestra, it certainly offers glimpses of what is to come. Perhaps the recording's strongest tracks are the musical numbers with guests: John Pizzarelli and the King Singers, especially the album's rendition of "Chattanooga Choo-Choo". One of Lockhart's greatest strengths is selecting guests to accompany the orchestra and this album is a foretaste of what is later to come, particularly on the Celtic and Mexican collections released later in Lockhart's tenure. While the album is good, and Lockhart seems to enjoy conducting these Big Band pieces, his rendition of "In the Mood" is missing something, which is surprising since this work is such a staple at Pops concerts, but even a not quiet the best rendition of any piece by the Boston Pops is still far better than much of what is available.

5 out of 5 stars "Runnin' Wild" will get you "In the Mood" for Big Band tunes.......2003-11-08

When John Williams stepped down as conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra after 14 successful seasons, the talented young Keith Lockhart was chosen as his replacement. Looking more like a college freshman than music director of one of America's most famous orchestras, Lockhart has proved to be just as adept and popular as Williams and the late Arthur Fiedler.

1996's Runnin' Wild is a collection of songs made famous by Big Band era orchestra leader Glenn Miller, whose civilian and later Army Air Force bands provided audiences with music to dance to (and love to) before and during World War II. Before his mysterious death in December 1944, Miller's band and featured vocalists gave the world such beloved swing standards as "In The Mood," "Chattanooga Choo-Choo," "A String of Pearls," and his signature theme, "Moonlight Serenade."

Listen to this album, close your eyes, and the Boston Pops Orchestra transports you back to the 1940s, with young men in uniform dancing with either their wives, sweethearts, or USO girls to the fast-paced "Runnin' Wild"...gently swaying the sweet "A String of Pearls" (featured in the film The Glenn Miller Story)...or sharing that last sweet bit of lovemaking to the slow beat of "Moonlight Serenade."

Of the 16 selections, "Moonlight Serenade" is the one I am most familiar with, having heard it as incidental music or "source" material in so many World War II movies or documentaries. It's slow, gentle, romantic yet sensual, and it's the only "Glenn Miller" song actually written by the bandleader. Originally titled "Now I Lay Me Down to Weep," it was a big hit in 1939 and was the theme song for both Miller's and Tex Beneke's bands. The Pops' performance of it captures its air of nostalgia perfectly, and the clarinet solo by Thomas Martin is simply fabulous.

Modern standards singer John Pizzarelli and The King's Singers show their stuff on several tracks, most vividly so in "Chattanooga Choo-Choo," which was another chart-topping hit for Miller in 1941, the year the U.S. entered World War II. Pizzarelli has a way of channeling the great vocalists of the era, with his easy-to-listen voice and flawless delivery. The King's Singers are wonderful backup in other songs, including "Serenade in Blue" and "(I've Got a Gal in) Kalamazoo."

As a soloist, Pizzarelli shines in the more romantic (and slower) "The Nearness of You," a song that might have been on a serviceman's mind when reading a letter from his wife or girlfriend.

Another sentimental favorite where Pizzarelli performs well is 1940's "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square," a song introduced in Britain and popularized not only by Glenn Miller but also Guy Lombardo and Sammy Kay.

Several genres also get the Glenn Miller treatment, such as opera (Verdi's "The Anvil Chorus," from Il Trovatore), vaudeville ("My Blue Heaven") blues ("The St. Louis Blues March") and even Russian traditional songs ("Volga Boatmen").

So if you want to get "In the Mood" and have a good time listening to a fun Boston Pops Orchestra album, Runnin' Wild is definitely worth getting.

    5 out of 5 stars Great fun!.......2000-11-02

I bought this CD three days ago and it hasn't left my CD player since. There is nothing like waking up and putting on "In the Mood" to start your day, or listening to "Moonlight Serenade" to end it.

4 out of 5 stars Okay, but lose the cover.......2000-05-31

The Pops are a Boston institution. They have been a tradition for many and familiar to most. I have been to the Pops probably as often as to Fenway Park. I like both and find great comfort in each.

What happens with much of what the Pops attempt here is goofy. The cover art, is I presume, similar to the old Arthur Fiedler covers where he wore a funny coat or hat and tried to look less symphonic and more silly. Give it up.

The strength of the Pops is the traditional, predictable format and arrangements that are as easy to identify as your own child. That too is the unfortunate part of the Pops. There needs to be a little something new here.

So if you enjoy the traditional string arrangements and percussion of the Pops this will not disappoint you. If you are trying to get a youngster excited about this music you might more easily find an elevator and listen to the musak.

Classical arrangements, novelty music and patriotic songs are the best the Pops can provide. The swing music just doesn't do it for me.

Runnin' wild? Maybe with a walker.

5 out of 5 stars Swing at its best!.......2000-01-08

I'll tell you a little story about this CD from Keith Lockhart. I'm a baby-boomer brought up on swing and am constantly looking for quality big band recordings. I bought this album several years ago when it was first released and I loved it. Whenever I played it at home, my 18 y/o daughter gave me the business about my "old fogey" music. One day, however, I happened to come home unexpectedly and there she was in the family room with "String of Pearls" at nearly full volume. I bought her the album when she went to college and she says that she's since converted nearly half the dorm to swing. This is probably the best recording of big band sounds ever. Also look at "Pops Stoppers" which is half big band tunes and "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)". Both are excellent as well.

I can't stop listening to this album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Run with the blind, Riot squad, England belongs to me, Out on an island, Price to high to pay, & every song is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously, do yourself a favor and buy this CD you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars great value, decent albums.......2007-03-09

I may be committing some sort of social faux pas, but as a big a fan of the 'Sparrer ...I prefer a live album. Sure the two albums for the price of one is grand, but the energy and insanity of a Cocksparrer live show is unparalled. Spend the extra money and make it happen, scholar.

5 out of 5 stars This is your intro to the world of Streetpunk/Oi!.......2006-11-17

What can I say that hasn't already been said about Shock Troops? The album is a classic. Not many bands have the passionate vocals Cock Sparrer have. The music is played clean, not raw like many punk bands of this time. Songs like "Where are They Now," "Take 'em All," and "England Belongs to Me" are infectious tunes guaranteed to make you seek out more music like this.
Runnin Riot is a different story. It took some time before I could appreciate the sound of that album. The music seems darker and dated. It is still worth a listen and since the disc is a 2-in-1 you don't really loose out on anything. This is a great value and I'm glad I was able to come across this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the greatest record ever (Shock Troops).......2006-01-30

This is a double CD, but Shock Troops is easily one of, if not the best, street punk/Oi! records ever. If you don't know the entire record by heart, buy this and learn. If I had to take 10 albums to a deserted island, blah blah, this would definitely go with me.

5 out of 5 stars The First OI Band..........2005-11-16

Cock Sparrer has a good claim on being one of the world's first punk band's, playing together before the Sex Pistols were even formed. Unfortunately, they didn't make a big splash with their first appearence... They released some singles during punk's first wave in the late seventies, but where they really proved to be influential was with these two albums, loaded with song after song of catchy, anthemic songs.

Cock Sparrer writes simple songs... a few verses and a catchy chorus. However, each song is laden with subtlties, rewarding the closer listener. Sure, there is no musical genius or poetry on either of these albums, all there is, are songs like Argy Bargy, Riot Squad, Working and more, that address the problems of the youth in a pessemistic way, while the songs are anything but depressing. Each song is full of energy, thanks to Colin McFaull's rather unique vocals... Sure, the topics are bleak and seldom optimistic, but Colin's voice acts like a glimmer of hope in all the bad times.

It's not all punk songs either. We're Coming Back and Out on an Island are certainly not the standard punk thoroughfare, with nice little riffs holding the respective songs together. Yet, even these more serious songs are equally catchy. I can remember my brother always songing Out on an Island...

Overall, Cock Sparrer is better than the average OI band, by far. Their songs possess sufficient variety so that you probably won't get too bored with all 70+ minutes of this cd (which is a pretty good deal by the way). Listen to it with a pint of bitter.
