Prolific Italian film-scoring legend Ennio Morricone isn't afraid to use contemporary pop idioms in his work but usually eschews them because they become dated so quickly. That shrewd sensibility helps make this collection of remixes by an international slate of dubsters and electronica artists a bit more interesting--and ironic--than it might otherwise be; after all, what music dates quicker than club remixes? Producer Stefan Rambow (Mondo Morricone, the Canto Morricone series) also notably secured Maestro Morricone's approval for the project, giving it an added cachet. But that official blessing may also account for the set's patchy quality. A few of the efforts seem overly conservative--especially given the genre--and hesitant to tweak The Legend too much. Apollo Four Forty and Terra Nova are satisfied to simply overplay the most clichéd elements (twangy guitars, harmonica, oddball percussion) of Morricone's spaghetti Western canon, while the remainder of the set is surprisingly atmospheric and sedate. The elegant melodies of "Chi Mai" sometimes get lost in Nightmares on Wax's groove lite, while Bigga Bush and DJ Dick produce two nicely contrasting takes (rhythmically edgy and languorously dreamy, respectively) of "Clan of the Sicilians" and Thievery Corporation, Tommy Hools, and Ali N. Askin plumb the often haunting dimensions of Morricone's music. Enthusiasts should welcome these mostly fresh takes on his enduring legacy, even if they ultimately prove Il Maestro was usually one step ahead--or completely outside--of the game. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Il Maestro goes chill.......2004-08-05

As a long-time film-music fan, became familiar with Morricon's genius in the field. Also a fan of the downtempo chill music, I happened on this find and my jaw dropped. Of course I purchased it, and found it to be an incredible blend of the two genres. What has happened is that the some wonderful themes from Morricones soundtracks (think of the great music from the equally great Sergio Leone Spaghetti westerns, and other Italian film music), were remixed (RMX) and created into a good cocktail hour CD. Not just anyone, the best DJ's like Theivary Corporation et al, have produced a listen thats unique, and pays compliments to the great Ennio Morricone.

Ummm, did I say I like it and has been on my "favorite album" list for about 2 years? If this sounds good to you, then buy it. There are 2 newer Morricone remix albums (Remixes 1 and 2) that are more uptempo and dance/house style, great, but the RMX album is still the king!

5 out of 5 stars Moody and melodic.......2002-09-19

I was a bit skeptical, but these contemporary rhythmic remixes of some of Italian film composer Ennio Morricone's best-known pieces work surprisingly well and make for an enjoyable collection. Produced with the cooperation of Morricone himself (or at least with his blessing), these tracks work astonishingly well in their new guise. Most are too somber to function as dance music, but are quite evocative and lovely as listening music, thanks to the sympathetic arrangements of the artists involved, all of whom seem to honor and appreciate Morricone (liner notes are brief) and the atmosphere these pieces were intended to convey. Fans of Morricone's music will enjoy this successful experiment and hope for more.

4 out of 5 stars groovy chill out w/few upbeat twists...uneven but worth it........2001-06-09

according to the liner notes of this cd, this compilation marks the first time that maestro morricone has agreed to a rmx of some of his original pieces. there are a number of standout tracks here - the most stellar piece being tomoyuki tanaka's rmx of belinda. tanaka brings in additional layers of brazilian percussion and layers them with those sweet fpm chorals and piano. this reinterpretation is beautiful and worth the price of the entire album. for those who immediately think "kitsch!" DON'T...far from it. thievery corporation turns in a very solid and typically mellow tune with a cinematic feel, "ile grande silencio." dj dick and bigga bush from rockers hifi both turn in separate rmxs of "clan of the sicilians" and both are fine downtempo though i found dj dick's a more enjoyable listening experience. nightmares on wax's rmx of chi mai is spare but effective, his approach reminded me of the one he used with his rmx of shirley bassey's "easy thing to do." no swelling chords, layered percussion, just a strong unifying beat and tinkling melody. tommy hools was the other track which i found to be superb. very chill and jazzy.

you may find that your personal preference for the remixers influences your opinion of the tracks contained here. i found myself drawn towards remixers whose other work i enjoy.

one star off for the lazy efforts of terranova and for the bad judgement in including a rmx by apollo four forty. these songs are the first two on the disc, so if you can get by them, it is smooth sailing all the way through.

Not as good as Funk da Fried, a classic, Simply Jeff is moving into different styles. Exploring new music and not the repetitive stuff i've been hearing from other breaksters like ICEY. What was he thinking when remixing beachball. Same beat for 5 min. Jeff keeps the party jumping, a definite CD u can keep playing for the party and worth the money spent.

Product Description

ROIR is proud to re-introduce one of the landmark albums of the last decaderemixed & remastered, w/ two bonus tracks (Junglist & Jacobs Ladder) plus a new version of Revolution. Inna City Pressure was originally released by Dr. Israel in late 1998, at a time when the scene he was associated with (NYCs illbient collective which included DJ Spooky, WE, Sub Dub, Spectre, Techno Animal, Badawi) was garnering major press attention. Of all the albums to emerge from that scene, this undoubtedly was and is the most important and, I would dare say, the best. Docs music is a fusion of world musics in the best possible sense. Dub/reggae, jungle/drum n bass, hip-hop, rock, punk & metal are all part of a completely organic whole, achieved with urgency, acumen, charisma and purpose. In fact, the album is so strong it should return some import to the terms World Music and Fusiontwo terms whose meanings have been diluted, hyped and bastardized to the point of inconsequence. Docs ability to represent and reprocess his influences (Black Uhuru, Black Sabbath, Bad Brains, Run DMC, Roni Size) into compelling new forms is astounding. And what ties these styles of music together so organically? The answer is simple: Doc understands that what he loves about all music is BIG BASS and BIG DRUMS. He also understands how to implement that knowledge. Its why Black Sabbath can be reimagined as a pot-smoking rasta chanting over drum n bass beats. And why Doc is such a special musical mind. The rerelease of Inna City Pressure will be followed by a new Dr. Israel album entitled Dr. Israel presents Dreadtone International: Patterns of War, out October 18th, 2005. Patterns is his first album in over 3 years and marks the continuation of a great & lengthy relationship with ROIR (those are Docs dreadlocks on the cover of ROIRs first ever CD releaseDub Revolution: UK Roots). This new album by Doc and the young Brooklyn collective Dreadtone International is a new-school-meets-old-school marriage of roots, dub, trip-hop, rock, and R&B. Teaming up with vocalists Lady K and Chemda, along with an assortment of Brooklyns finest dub players, the good Dr. has created possibly his most accessible effort to datean entirely new dub sound. Think Massive Attack vs. Fugees. Heavy heavy bass lines, thundering beats, beautiful melodies, pristinely produced vocals, and conscious lyrics paint an over-all soundscape which is as powerful as it is unique.

      Album Description

The Residents have remixed their first album from 1971, the never released Warner Bros. Album. The Warner Bros. Album was the group's first demo tape. They mailed it anonymously (they didn't have a name yet) to Harve Halverstadt at Warner Brothers. Halverstadt was chosen because he had worked with Captain Beefheart, one of the group's musical heroes. The tape was returned with a rejection addressed to 'Residents, 20 Sycamore St., San Francisco'. This, of course, gave the group their name, which first appeared as 'The Residents Uninc.', a fictional musical organization. The Residents maintain that Halverstadt made the right decision, but the place of the Warner Bros. Album in Residential history is assured not only because of the role it played in the naming of the band. Euroralph/Germany. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars Only a Baby wants to be King!.......2007-06-28

Leave it to our favorite eyeball audiophobes to skewer the "King" in the Keester!

They remix and re-do most all of the "Pelvis'" hits in Residential funereal tonal qualities, making each and every Elvis hit dark gloomy and foreboding! In many of the songs, the Residents sound so much better than Elvis ever could!

"Return To Sender" is an example. The dark funeral parlor music accompaning the singer changes the whole meaning and experience of the original Elvis hit to one so dark and depressing! "Hound Dog" is so toe tapping, it feels like a phoenix visited Graceland and dug up the King's corpse to witness the way that song REALLY ought to be done!

And, as a bonus, after about every 4 songs, we get a little narrative about the "Baby King" by a Resident. He explores and explains to his grandchildren all the King's emotional instabilities, his attempting to make Priscella into the image of his Mother, and the King's descent to drugs and death for the sake of wanting the world to love him. He explains to the child that as far as Elvis is concerned, what was he really king of?! He was the King of Need! He needed more than anyone else. But after all he was a baby!

If you love Elvis, stay away from this one! But if you see through the Graceland fantasy, this one is right up your alley!

4 out of 5 stars a remix that helps the music be freed.......2007-05-10

One might think that the Rz in their 30+ years may have come back to the beginning of their creative output and dried themselves out when they put out two remix discs--this, and a remix of the previously only mythological _WB_ album that got them their monicker when it was returned to them quite anonymously.

And one may think that the Rz have simply become over the hill and have to go back through previous stuff for anything of interest, considering their three-volume _Best Left Unsaid_ series that rereleases Rz instrumental music.

But I tend to think that this release helps highlight what the Rz do best, and that is instrumental music. The original _King & Eye_ was a little too dependent on Cube-E, a conceptual concert that looked at the roots of American music. The Elvis section may have been more sensical in the context of the full show, but the original _King & Eye_ seemed a little too monotone, with most all of the versions working through the same deep, Southern tone. This remix lets some of the other aspects of the Elvis revisioning come through, and it is something of a pleasure. While I think the Homer Flynn voice has become a little too prevalent of the RZ stuff of the past decade at least, the mixes here lighten the load and make this once again an intersting album.

Jaan Hammer's "Miami Vice" theme is ingrained in our consciousness, along with pink and aqua cargo shirts. This is a delightful take on that TV show's musical cues, restful and delightful. Totally rad cover art on this EP CD.

3 out of 5 stars elegant late night FPU remix, quality ep package.......2002-05-24

Back in the day, day being just a decade ago, you couldnýt escape Jan Hammerýs immensely powerful synthesizer theme from Miami Vice. Admittedly thereýs a bias here, having lived in the fabled hot spot at the time when pastel shirt power was everywhere, and everyone ý even my old granny ý watched the show. But that track is perhaps too obvious to bring back, hence the search for Crockettýs Theme, a downtime companion piece pairing synth and guitar. With retro-electro all the rave right now, why not bring this ditty back? Certainly itýs fitting that Turbo Recordings take a crack at it, mining gold from their recent remake of Corey Hartýs 80ýs cheese slice ýSunglasses at Night.ý

FPU, quirky alter ego of Stockholm-based producer Peter Benisch, gives the proper polishing youýd expect, crafting a simple, soothing techno track sans six-string, flipping the classic into an elegant late night breather. Mateo Murphyýs sleek and energetic mix certainly is one to play out, though itýs perhaps too slick, losing some of the retro-charm. Thankfully Zyntherius (Jori Hulkkonen) rectifies that on his bouncy remake.

Bonus tracks include Tigaýs take on Oceanýs Drive, adding his lo-fi vocals over a bubbly, breezy minimal backing, example 1A that a sense of spacing and proper tweaking of a few gear pieces can go just as far as studio trickery. FPUýs unreleased ýEastside Protection,ý a clean, synth-laded vocoder-closer, rounds out the package.

Any complaints? Well, couldnýt one of these talented gents whipped up a cheese-tastic, tasty ode just for the grin of it?
