5 out of 5 stars impressive.......2001-10-10

If you're not familiar with the artists of Project Blowed, this cd is perfect for you. This cd needs to be in every home across North America, it's that good. And since you won't be club-bangin' to it any time soon, you gotta buy it. Mind boggling lyrics from the original west coast underground grace this cd. Track 14 is one of the greatest rap songs ever recorded, my wig was blown completely back. You get your fill of AB and AC on this cd but it also has great tracks from the rest of project blowed: Section 8 (Dolla Holla), Figures of Speech, CVE, Ganjah K and the list goes on. Be sure to check out Heavyweights Round 2, Self-Jupiter's part is DOPE!

5 out of 5 stars LA Underground forever.......2001-09-05

This is a tight CD. Deffinitly worth getting if you like freestyle fellowship or Abstract you will love this ... Tight Jazzy beats and crazy fast rhymes. This is a must have for a head but if you like P diddy don't bother buying this. Peace

5 out of 5 stars Y'all don't even know...........2000-08-29

Don't try to comprehend how fresh and raw this album is... you'll hurt your head. In order to give y'all some context, this album was put out in 1995, when the airwaves were congested by "dance rap" like will smith & co. This album has every type of MC style a true fan could want: wordplay, conscious, metaphor, and story... you can really feel the emotion on these tracks. And if you're ever in L.A., drop by Leimert Park on a Thursday nite and find out where the title of the album comes from!

5 out of 5 stars original and musical.......2000-06-06

Some of the samples are so familiar, like OC's Word.. Life which is used in all the interludes, the Isley's Between the Sheets, of Big Poppa fame and Stevie's Pasttime Paradise, which was played out by Coolio, but these rappers innovate these beats even and just exploit them to the fullest. The rhyming styles are amazing and diverse, you hear people talking like a conversation style, really rhyming well to the beat, then you can get that bone-thuggy type melodic fast flow, and straight bouncy west coast bumpers but with better lyrics than your average hoo-banging type isht. I have the cd, and so as far as numbers go, #14 is like an 8 minute masterpiece, and the first three tracks are great, plus the track by the females which is around 9 or so. All the emcees are "underground," and there's a great sample about that somewhere that I cant remember to quote, but I think Aceleyone has been making a bigger name for himself as of late, and its too bad his name isnt even bigger as he's dope, as are the rest. This is one of those few underground cds that no one hears of but your stupid backpacking friend that actually IS GOOD. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars Project Blowed, what's the code?.......2005-04-26

Obviously, with a compilation cd, everybody's not necessarily gonna put out their A+ material, but that doesn't mean they're gonna slack off. The whole cd is actually pretty good. First time through, I swear I wasn't feeling it until like the last few tracks. Tracks #17-21 being a standout portion of this cd. This is a testament to the power and eclecticism of the Project Blowed from L.A. They don't strictly just have conscious MC's. They have a little of everything. What they do share is a high-skill level all-around. Also, most these cats have the ability to flow at high-speed paces.
The two songs I'm feelin' the most are "13th Month" and Longevity & Aceyalone on "Ruff Rhymes," which bangs nicely in the car. The two main parts of this whole album are track #'s 5-10 and 17-21. I really like some of the contributions by the groups: tracks from CVE, Hip Hop Clan, Acid Reign, and Abstract Tribe Unique are excellent. Newcomers Customer Service show much talent on track #4. Other songs worth mentioning are the short "Jazzy Girl Freestyle" w/ Mikah 9, Busdriver, & others and the unexepected twang of "Mama & Papa Raised Right." Pigeon John, Sach, and Ellay Khule have an undoubtedly excellent and uplifting song with "The People." Jah Orah ends it up with energy (don't forget the hidden track afterward with 2Mex and someone else) and I can't forget the Blowed's new anthem "Who The F*ck Is You?" "Cray Crazy" is really different: they're talkin' about computers and robots (in an I, Robot light) and is truly a bug-out moment. Good stuff throughout. Only tracks I'm not feelin' are in the middle, like #'s 13-15.
This also comes with a DVD with some videos (which you can see most of them on projectblowed.com) and live footage of the actual 10th Anniversary. I really liked the documentary that was featured on it: the most rewarding part of this package. The cd is pretty good though, and I recommend it to any true lover of Hiphop and underground who has missed out on this talent from L.A. I heard some more good stuff from familiar voices like Acey, Mikah, Abstract, & Busdriver but was introduced to some talent that I wasn't aware of. I'm definitely gonna look out from stuff in the future from Jah Orah, Phoenix Orion, CVE, Hip Hop Clan & Ellay Khule, Acid Reign, Medusa, Longevity, and Customer Service...names that could go down in Hiphop history. Don't sleep on this. These cats are about something significant and real. Busdriver, Abstract Rude, Mikah 9, Phoenix Orion, Ellay Khule, Medusa, CVE, Jah Orah, Pigeon John, Pterradacto, Customer Service, and, oh yeah...Aceyalone. Get familiar with these names! Best thing about this: it's just the tip of the iceburg of what some of these artists are capable of. Support the L.A. underground scene that has enhanced the lives of so many...

5 out of 5 stars PROJECT BLOWED! Who the F@#$ is you?.......2005-04-19

The legendary Project Blowed open mic night at 4343 Leimert Blvd in the heart of South Central LA began 10 years ago. It was at the Blowed - an extension of the Good Life Café - where MCs such as Freestyle Fellowship, Chillin Villain Empire, Hip Hop Kclan, Of Mexican Descent, Jurassic 5, Dilated Peoples, and Busdriver honed their skills. The crew as a whole came to be called Project Blowed.

The first Project Blowed comp, put out in '94 by Aceyalone & Abstract Rude, is an underground classic, so the expectations for this 10th anniversary release are ridiculously high. But, the bottom line is: Buy this album. Any collection by the Blowedians is going to have some gems that you won't be able to hear from any other crew. The DVD alone is worth $20. Here's a list of the DVD features:

I. Interview footage (15 min) - a mini-documentary about the Project Blowed open mic, consisting of numerous brief interviews with such Blowed luminaries as Aceyalone, Mikah 9, Abstract Rude, Busdriver, 2mex, Ellay Khule, Ben Caldwell (owner of the Blowed, I believe), Medusa, Subtitle, Otherwize, Sunspot Jones (Living Legends), Adlib (Thavius Beck), Phoenix Orion, Volume 10, Brother J (X-Clan), Kale, Hines, Akil, Jah Orah, and others.

II. Footage from the Project Blowed 10th Anniversary Concert (27 min) -
1.Freestyle Fellowship (Aceyalone & Mikah 9) - Mary
2.Hip Hop Clan (Ellay Khule & Pterradacto)
3.Busdriver - Happiness(`s Unit of Measurement)
4.Phoenix Orion & Sunfire
5.Medusa - Pimps Down, Flows Up (with a capella & beat box)
6.Haiku d'Etat - Triumvirate
7.2mex
8.Aceyalone, Abstract Rude, Chu, Mikah 9, PEACE, Ellay Khule - sick flows & freestyles

III. Music Videos (approx. 20 min) - Aceyalone: Mic Check (w/ CVE & a capella); Knownots (w/ Mikah 9 & Abstract Rude); I Think; Moonlit Skies. Good Brothers: Give it Here. Abstract Rude: All Day. Medusa: My Mamma Raised a G.

Ellay Khule & Pterradacto absolutely RIP IT live. Definitely a highlight of the DVD. They're followed by Busdriver, who does a sick live version of "Happiness" from his new album. Medusa's commanding voice flows over beats, beatboxes, & a cappella. Haiku's "Triumvirate" sounds even better live. 2mex rips a medley of verses over a hardcore Franz Ferdinand beat and has all the heads bobbin' & moshin'. The finale is a posse medley of sick battle verses - Mikah 9 and PEACE especially will make your jaw drop. You have never heard PEACE rap like this before, man... he just kills it. There's some technical difficulties & the beat stops when Khule starts rhyming & he seamlessly freestyles telling DJ Drez to bring the beat back. The only bad thing about the concert footage is that it should have been longer.

What are you waiting for, buy it already.

3 out of 5 stars Decent........2004-03-11

The latest release from the Project Blowdians. Overall, I am glad to see the crew still releasing tracks. However this is not a must have album. It is comparable to Fat Jack: Cater to the DJ but far weaker.

The strong points of the album are the variety of styles and rhyming. Its good to hear Self Jupiter, Pep Love, Bus Driver and 2Mex.

The weak points of the album were the beats which were kind of funky and come close to being wack.

Not a must have but still worth a few listens.

Best tracks:
-Give it here
-GB in your life
-Rock with us
-Superstar

If your new to the Project Blowed Crew I would recommend:

-Haiku D'Etat
-Freestyle Fellowship: Shockadoom
-Aceyalone: Book of Human Language
-Bus Driver: Temporary Forever
-Fat Jack: Cater to the DJ

Peace, Love

the album could be better, but it passes as what it is, the songs are either hit or miss, no in between, 5-6-7 are the tracks that really shine.

As a member of the influential L.A. hip-hop group Freestyle Fellowship and on his solo debut, Aceyalone pushed the boundaries of lyrical possibilities via tricky cadences and abstract wordplay. Independent of any major-label restraints, A Book of Human Language, Aceyalone's sophomore effort, is an attempt to "redefine your hip-hop guidelines," as the MC creates a highly conceptual album based on no less than the whole of human experience. Since this record is a "book," each song is a chapter that builds onto the song prior and lays the foundation for the next, all made conceptually cohesive with interludes, narratives, and the dark, jazzy production of longtime collaborator Mumbles. With Human Language, Aceyalone manages to insightfully and provocatively cover a universe of subjects, delivered in poetically complex rhymes. In other words, it's exactly what one who is familiar with Aceyalone and Freestyle Fellowship would expect. --James Tai

5 out of 5 stars INTELLIGENT, LITERATE, SMART, FUNNY, AND STILL WESTSIIIDE.......2006-11-25

BACK IN THE DAYS OF THE FREESTYLE FELLOWSHIP MOVEMENT, 4 M.C.S (NOT MAINSTREAM BY ANY MEANS) ATTACKED THE EARS WITH STREETWISE HUMILITY, GANGSTA ISSUES, AND BRAIN CELLS, AND BROUGHT TOGETHER AN INCREDIBLE PIECE OF WORK. INNER CITY GRIOTS!

AMONG THOSE FOUR WAS ACEYALONE (BORN EDDIE HAYES), WHO AMONG THEM STOOD OUT AS A LONE GUNMAN WHO BATTLED MANY, AND WON. ACEYALONE KICKED INCREDIBLY VICIOUS INTELLIGENCE, ALONG WITH WITTY, GRITTY STREET RHYMES, FOR AN AUDIENCE THAT WERE ALL ABOUT SMOKING WEED, GANGBANGING, AND BI**HES.

LET'S SWITCH 2 YEARS LATER TO 1995. A MORE SOLEMN, FORGIVING ACEYALONE IS IN THE MIX WITH HIS DEBUT ALBUM, "ALL BALLS DON'T BOUNCE". HE OPENED DOORS TO HIS WORLD, A WORLD OF COMPLEX SYMBOLISMS AND INCREDIBLE SYNCHRONIZED BEATS AND LYRICS. HE CAME TO THE PLATE LETTING PEOPLE KNOW HE IS IN THIS TO PLAY BALL. THE TITLE TRACK HAD PEOPLE GRASPING FOR MORE WAITING FOR THE NEXT TASTE OF WHAT WAS TO COME.

FADE 3 YEARS STILL, TO 1998, WHEN ACEY KICKS HIS SOPHMORE ALBUM "A BOOK OF HUMAN LANGUAGE". INEVETIBLY HIS BEST WORK TO THAT DATE, AND THIS DATE, (OBVIOUS TO THE HIGH RATE OF PAY FOR THIS ALBUM AS IT IS HARD AS HELL TO FIND, AND, JUST PLAIN BRILLIANT), MANY HAVE CALLED HIM SHALLOW, PEDANTIC, AND EVEN BRAGADOCIOUS, BY THE WAY HE "SUPPOSEDLY" MADE PEOPLE FEEL MENTALLY UNCONSCIOUS AND INADEQUATE BY HIS VAST KNOWLEDGE. ALL HE DID WAS MAKE AN ALBUM THAT HE FEELS COMFORTABLE DOING, AND FOR THOSE THAT CAN FOLLOW HIS STYLE, AND RIDE HIS WAVE LENGTH.

IF THAT MAKES ONE PEDANTIC, THEN HE WOULD PROBABLY AGREE WITH ME IN SAYING, IT WORKED.

TREMENDOUS FROM THE DELICIOUS PIANO SAMPLE AT THE START TO THE ALMOST DRAMATICALLY CONTROLLED DRUM/FUSIONED FINISH, HE LEAVES US ASKING, CAN WE HAVE MORE?

HERE'S HOW IT BREAKS DOWN AS AN ALBUM....

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Hip Hop album.......2006-10-12

The best thing about this album is the subject matter - the whole thing is a lesson in our relationships with eachother and our perceived realities. This is like Taoism on a Rap CD. Acey is one of the most poetic, comedic and authentic storytellers of our time and is one of the only Hip Hop artists I still listen to. This is the kind of album you listen to when you want to be able to rap along without realizing you just said some of the most ignorant nonsense ever. If you are lucky enough to find this album anywhere then I HIGHLY recommend picking it up.

5 out of 5 stars It took a few listens...........2006-08-06

At first, when I heard this release, I was turned off by the dated beats. That was probably because I just found this album in 2006. That being said, there are some hip hop albums that are so timeless that you cannot really decipher what date they are from. Once I got over the ancient beats, I was turned onto the lyrics, which are amazing and poetical. Some of the greatest lyrics I have heard in hip hop. Aceyalone truly shines on this album. And the concept to the album is tight too. This is a definite must have for hip hop fans.

5 out of 5 stars Pure poetry.......2004-10-24

I almost jumped out of my shoes when I found this one in a record store! I knew it was out of print. Since I had discovered Acey as a member of Freestyle Fellowship and I already had "All Ball Don't Bounce," I could only imagine obtaining this album. With the cover, and the title, I wanted this cd so bad. I was almost pinning it as my favorite Hiphop album ever before I even bought it. See this is why it's bad to go into albums with specific expectations because we need to keep an open mind at all times...not saying that this album was a disappointment, but my expectations were unfairly high for this 1998 album, a year in which underground/conscious Hiphop was making a comeback.
If you don't know, Aceyalone is an incredibly talented and unique MC. He can pull off gangsta-type bragging (with Freestyle Fellowship) or go conscious, abstract, comedy, or off-the-wall. Acey is probably the most slept-on MC in history. This was his second solo album, and it is approached with a loose concept theme. He covers everything from death, time, balance, the state of Hiphop and mankind, etc. Twenty tracks all in the same focused manner.
It took me a few listens through to regard this as a five-star album, mostly because it's so tough to pull off what he attempts. I still regard most of my favorite songs here in the first half, although the second half contains standouts "The Face," "The Thief in the Night," and "Human Language." The ones I like in the first half are "The Guidelines"(Hiphop guidlines that is-maybe the album's strongest song), "The Balance," "The Energy"(the best short song here, out of quite a few short ones), and "The Walls and Windows." "The Grandfather Clock" is solid as well. "The March" and "The Vision" in the second half are both short, but have nice jazz music in the background. The vocablulary here is impeccable, of the highest quality, like you would never expect from a rapper. Some reviewers have complained about the beats on "ABOHL." I liked it though, although none were upbeat, many of the backgrounds produced by Mumbles were unique and organic. I like how Acey rhymes with no background music at times, and there is a live recording at the end of track 19.
I think the reason this album wasn't the best Hiphop cd ever was because it is a tough task to accomplish throughout an album. Acey gives us straight up poetry in its purest form, and if you love poetry, you need to get this! He tackles heavy issues, while barely even cussing, or bragging, and never mentioning anything about hoes, sex, his sexual triumphs, etc. No cliches, very little ebonics! An album of this sort is almost impossibly unattainable, and Acey trys hard and nearly pulls it off. You have to commend him for that. It's just that even though he experiments with his voice, his flow (flavor basically) it's almost impossible for the album to not come off as dull. Just keep listening to overcome this notion. I guess it does kind of depend on the mood you're in before you listen to this. Like I said, while Acey is positive and telling the real, nothing upbeat is to be found (even though there's a reason for that). This album is serious. Although when Ace is experimenting with his voice and flow, at times it seems as though he's not taking his own subject matter seriously (check track 7 for this). Nonetheless, Aceyalone is a talented, intelligent artist who goes for the unthinkable in this album.
Like I said, my high expectations for this album almost caused me to overlook the beauty that it contains. So, is "A Book of Human Language" the best album ever in Hiphop? -I wouldn't go that far. Does Hiphop need an album like this? -Definitely. An album that expresses Hiphop in it's truest form (poetry), and steers away from superficial subject matter. I'd say, if you like mainstream rap or want to get deeper into Hiphop, this album is a great place to begin (if you can find it)! Don't forget about the vocabulary though, oh my God it's beautiful! Instead of the best Hiphop album ever, it should be regarded as another exceptional, high-caliber disc from a gifted, multi-dimensional artist that has a catalog of high-quality releases. I can't think of any MC from the West Coast that is as smart, talented, versatile, and dedicated to the Hiphop art and culture as Mr. Aceyalone.

5 out of 5 stars As Fly as a Buffalo Wing in the Sky.......2004-05-18

Hip-hop is known to have some of the most unfairly underappreciated talents of all time. Stretching from Kool Keith to MF Doom, but if one artist of the last 20 years has been criminally slept-on, it's been Acey des uno. Aceyalone. Ever since his debut with Freestyle fellowship, Ace has shined for at least a decade. With classic material all throughout the 90s, Acey has proven to be in the upper echelon of emcees through out the history of hip-hop. But, as awesome as Ace's other work has been, nothing is as monumental as "A Book of Human Language". This could be one of the greatest concept albums of all time, and not just in hip-hop, and Acey is completely flawless and magnificent on the mic as you can get.

It's a shame that "A Book of Human Language" is out of print now, because it is an opus of magnum force. For all you that doubt the steez, pick up The Book and listen to what an underappreciated prophet has to say.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for every Project Blowed fan........2006-11-06

Imperator is a Project Blowedian of the first hour and he is still hungry. He made the first flyer for the Blowed for Aceyalone. He beat Eminem in a battle when he was a nobody. He produced NGA FSHs MUSIC THE DRUG and one song for the GOOD BROTHERS album featuring Aceyalone and Riddlore. And he is the C.E.O. of By Any Means Music, an independent label having released five albums so far:

Imperator - Evolution of a Man
      Imperator - Hiphopoly
      Big Flossy - Flossaholic
      Goldie - Patterson Park
      ByAnyMeansMusic - Family Ties

Evolution of a Man features Riddlore, Volume 10, Rifleman, PEACE and some others. It contains no fillers but real good music, although I have to admit that I like its successor Hiphopoly, for which Imperator did most of the production by himself, even more.

4 out of 5 stars Something to tie you over.......2005-05-26

This album of unreleased material dropped in 2002 to tie fans over between Acey's "Accepted Eclectic" and "Love & Hate" albums. So if you have Acey's 4 LPs already but don't have this, I recommend picking this up to tie you over until Acey's next release. That's really what it's good for.
This album is solid, yet nothing to be overly excited over. Aceyalone shows har far good rhyming can take you because the beats on this album are lacking. Elusive produces the whole thing. While the beats aren't the worst you've heard, overall they're way too laid-back and boring over the course of the album. Not one was really upbeat. Elusive's lifeless strings and pianos get old quite fast, and almost leave Acey as a "fish straight out of water."
Acey keeps it tight, although not one song was truly jaw-dropping. The best songs are "Bigger They Come," "I Think I Know Too Much," and possibly "Say," but they don't quite rank with Ace's best material. To his credit though, not one song is terrible, and there are many others that are interesting or totally new ground for him. He even shows bursts of energy (such as "Scribble on a Clean Surface" and "Say") which he never really displayed on the previous "Accepted Eclectic." The last 4 or 5 songs are really good, as is "I Think..." and maybe "Future Rockers." Everything else is decent, but kinda forgettable.
All in all, not a must have Aceyalone album, but not a bad entry into his catalog. It's definitely for diehards (like myself), and who isn't who's actually heard him before? Acey still very much has IT, and look out for a new solo coming this year, hopefully. I can't wait to see him back in Phoenix again, this time with the rest of the Project Blowed! If you don't know, you need to know, y'all...

4 out of 5 stars Project Blowed Part II?.......2001-03-12

well, not exactly. no doubt you came to this title looking for some follow-up of one the dopest hip-hop albums ever. you will get a taste of that but don't expect it to be as good. however, most tracks on this over-long 2cd set are good though a 1cd album would have been tighter. all the mc's on project blowed are here minus aceyalone and ATU, and that's the main reason it doesn't reach the 5 star level. but you still get CVE, busdriver, hip hop clan, et al. they all represent the l.a. sound well, bust some fantastic flows, and there are occasionally classic moments. overall, fresh and recommended.

5 out of 5 stars afterlife right here.......2000-11-19

The "Declaration" is another bangin' masterpiece from the Blowdians. In my opinion, every track was hard hittin', west coast aesthetics at its finest. Ngafish, Riddlore?, and others were very solid on the production side. For me, it gave me a chance to hear some artists that i haven't really heard yet (ie. Easty Boys). I especially liked how Busdriver came with some verbal fire on "i don't dance". The track titled "iz hip hop dead!" was a fresh and in yo face type of jam. kinda like ricky henderson, bangin in the lead off spot. Blowdian fans will enjoy hearing several tracks where veterans like: C.V.E., hip hop kclan, omd, and busdriva represent heat on the mic. I was vibin' to every track, but to name a few really tight ones, i would say that "kraft" and "i put that on the klan" are sick. i also found those tracks by legion to be pretty cool. While listening to this album, a few of my boys felt that the vibe was a lil "gangsta". oh well, that's how the west coast does it! Declaration is a 2X disc dosage of some raw and ill Project Blowed $*it! If you are an underground hip hop fan, i recommend you check it out! peace... kut1er
