Christmas is the season for whipping out those holiday-specific standard recordings. This splendid gift by Chanticleer should top the list, for one will never tire of this a cappella choir's interpretations. With selections spanning the last five centuries of Latin, German, English, Spanish, and French festive fare, this recording exemplifies the sacrifice of the ego to the higher form of choral sound. Jacob Handl's "Mirabile Mysterium" takes you on a trip into the chromatic wonderlands, where you temporarily lose tonal balance. Victoria's eerie and dissonant "O Magnum Mysterium" treats us to rich voices swelling out of one organic whole. The phenomenal blend and perfect intonation elevate this recording above others in its category. --Barbara Eisner Bayer
Customer Reviews:
Pure Christmas.......2007-01-16
If you are looking for traditional madrigal sounding holiday music, this CD is for you. I have purchased this CD several times because I just keep giving them away. Everyone I've ever introduced it to has loved it. This finely polished group has a pure sound matched by no other. If you weren't looking at the CD notes you would never know this is only a group of 12 men.
Christmas magic.......2007-01-10
A CD evocative of Christmas past and present. Beautiful harmonies both wistful and ringing with joy. Buy it for next Christmas!
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-12-02
Chanticleer, the U.S. equivalent of the British King's Singers, is a full-time classical vocal ensemble named for the rooster in Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales'. It was founded in 1978 by Louis Botto, a tenor, and for a while was its artistic director. They have achieved critical acclaim all over the world and their repertoire is very extensive and varied. Just commenting on a few of the selections on this disc:
'Es ist ein Ros entsprungen' is a hymn that originated in western Germany around 1500, and is best known in the harmonization by Michael Praetorious published around 1609. The poem used biblical imagery that pictures the newborn Christ growing forth from the "stem of Jesse'(the father of King David), as foretold in Isiah 11. The metaphorical writings of the Middle Ages depict the patriarchal figure of Jesse as a rose bush.
'O Magnum mysterium',Victoria's most famous motet, uses a subline text from the Christmas Vespers. This is incredibly beautiful with its interweaving polyphony which leads to a hushed choral declamation at the words "O beata Virgo"(O Blessed Virgin) ending with a Alleulia Section.
'Here is the Little Door' is from a set of three "carol anthems", dating from 1918-1920. Herbert Howells was revered as one of the 20th century's most distinguished Choral composers, and I recently discovered him thru the album " by the Corydon Singers conducted by Matthew Best. It includes Howells Requiem in addition to the Vaughan Williams Mass in G Minor. It is the most heavenly somewhat exotic choral music I think I have heard in many years of listening; I highly recommend it.
'Glory to the newborn King'. Joseph Jennings, Georgia native and present musical director of Chanticleer, has often drawn upon his roots to create special gospel and spiritual arrangements of familiar songs. 'Glory to the newborn King' features four traditional songs combined to showcase Chanticleer's unique choral virtuosity!
This is an excellent group of carols, and it is always refreshing to hear 'new' melodies, arrangements; a joy for the ear!!!!
Simply beautiful.......2006-02-20
The title and artist' name says it all - Christmas with clear (pure) singing. Glorious in all respects.
It's that time of year...for Chanticleer!.......2005-12-20
Walking the busy malls to the multichannel Muzak of every old Christmas song interpreted in hiphop, jazz, idiosyncratic 'rethinkings' by famous soloists as well as replays of Gene Autry, Bing Crosby etc., it is a relief to return home (or if fortunate, to the concert hall) and hear the more uplifting music of the season through the ages. And despite reliance on some old favorite Messiah recordings, and carols by Kings College Choir, the one CD that seems to reign supreme is this Chanticleer release SING WE CHRISTMAS from 1995!
These twelve male voices create an ambience that can only be labeled 'spiritual', so resonant and exquisitely performed are each of the generous works on this recording. The moods pass through Praetorius, Victoria, Bach and traditional carols of unknown authorship to works by Ives, Billings, Holst, Guerrero, Howells and Sametz. The repertoire is both familiar and rarely heard and the result of combining all these forms is the truest form of Christmas spirit on record: this is music to cleanse the Muzak blitz! Highly recommended. Grady Harp, December 05

Magnum Opus V.2.......2007-02-03
I paid a little extra for it ($15 US for a beat-up copy), but the music was solid. A great value for what I paid for it. The songs, of course are first rate! Five stars!
Titles AND ARTISTS provided here, great Old-School........2006-06-29
Don't you just LOVE it when the titles are provided but no artists? You know what that usually means when I look on the back of a cd and see titles of current or old familiar songs but no artists? It means that the songs are not done by the original artists but cover artists!
Rest assured these are all the original artists!
Here they go:

2. Let's Have Some Fun (12" Version) - Bar-Kays
3. Spread Love (12" Version) - Al Hudson and the Soul Partners
4. Hot Shot (12" Version) - Karen Young

Customer Reviews:
Surprisingly Good!.......2007-04-18
This one is very addicting. I was not impressed with this after only a few listens, but over time this one really grew on me. its a very listenable album that has 9 great songs and only 2 not so great ones. Its also very similiar to seventh sign. Vengence is a great opener, that took me a while to appreciate. the whole cd is fantastic. the lone instrumental overture 1622 is awsome. stadouts are vengence, tomorrows gone, The only one, Overture 1622, and Amberdawn.
Ratings:
Vengence-9/10 takes a few listens
No love lost-5/10 not good
Tomorrows gone-9/10
The only one-9/10 better version of (heaven tonight)
Id die without you-8/10
Overture 1622-10/10 perfect insturmental
Vodoo-8/10- great singing and chorus
Cross the line-6/10 a little weak
Time will tell-8/10 great singing
Fire in the sky-7/10 catchy song
Amberdawn-8/10 guitar sounds like van halen
A quality release.......2006-08-12
At a time when his brand of metal was at it's most hated Yngwie ploughed on regardless. Which not only shows his passion for his chosen subgenre but also a defiant belief in his own abilities and those of his bandmates.
I actually picked this up at Utopia Records - metal haven of Sydney, Australia and mentioned to the my girlfriend of the time what each track would sound like before even listening to it. And you know what - I got 'em all right. That's both good and bad, Yngwie either being in a rut or having built a solid reputation and expectation in his fans. He once said that he wanted his albums to be like AC/DC records in that his fans knew what they were getting. Well, mission accomplished dude.
While painstakingly smooth in execution and with a note perfect rendition of every seconds worth of time, this is actually a fairly strong collection of song based material. The opener, Vengeance, is a little dull musically but No Love Lost is a real barnstormer. The album starts to suffer in the middle, a couple of ballads sapping the listeners will to live though things pick up with the instrumental Overture 1612 which has some blistering runs.
In fact this instrumental sort of separates what I always thought of as side one and side two of this disc. And the second half of the album is, strangely, far stronger and the real reason to pick up this album. Voodoo is a track where Michael Vescera really asserts himself and this track is dominated by the journeyman vocalists talents. Cross the Line is another mid paced rocker which does the job at hand, as does Time Will Tell and Fire in the Sky which has some interesting spark.
Really these tracks represent the best quartet of songs lined up in a row on virtually any post Eclipse Yngwie album. And with No Love Lost and the tasty instrumental Overture 1612 this album was a bit of a pleasant surprise given how poor I was expecting it to be, expecially given the annoying pompous original cover art.
On this album Malmsteen has shown an ability to share the limelight with long time collaborator Vescera and put in some different touches such as the use of sitars and at times deliberately slowing the tempo of the tracks from his usual pace in order to build a groove with a sense of space while also giving long time fans just what they want.
This is one of my favorites.......2001-06-20
I don't understand why some fans don't like Magnum Opus. I guess if you want something with the fire of Seventh Sign, you should listen to Seventh Sign. Magnum Opus is not the most boisterous of all Yngwie's albums, and I doubt it was intended to be. The songs on this album have more of a grandiouse feel to them. "Time will tell", "No love lost", "Voodoo", and "I'd die for you" have a great mystical feel that cannot be paralleled by most artists. "Cross the line" and "Fire in the sky" are great rockers. Critics should give this album a chance.
Magnifique.......2001-05-07
This is an excellent effort by that infinite genius. Magnum Opus features some fantastic songs like Vangeance, Voodoo and Time will tell. Even an ordinary ballad like I'd die without you is given a sterling edge by the power of Malmsteen's soloing. But the real classic on this album, is the instrumental Amberdawn. This single track one of the saddest and most beautiful tracks I've heard itself justifies the buying of this album.
The Best Yngwie Album.......2001-04-28
why dont half the people like this album, its soo damn good. the production is superb, unlike most yngwie albums, also the songs on this are great, vengeance has a jaw dropping solo on it and id die without you is an emotional song.

Customer Reviews:
Magnum Opus Vol. 3.......2003-05-30
Didn't give this volume 5 stars because the full twelve inch versions are not included for every cut. The liner notes state the 6 minute plus version of Quincy Jones, "Stuff Like That" was suppose to be included. That didn't happen! The version that is included is only approximately 3 minutes long. Disappointing!
