AFRICAN MUSIC MEETS RAGGAE.......2007-03-03
THIS IS A GREAT CD, MIXING REGGAE RHTHYMS AND BEATS WITH AFRICAN VOCALS AND MELODIES. CAN'T BELIEVE THAT ISLAND RECORDS PASSED UP ON THE OPPORTUNITY TO RELEASE THIS GEM WHEN THEY HAD THE CHANCE WAY BACK WHEN IN THE 70'S. THIS IS AN UNDERAPPRECIATED GEM. YOU WILL ENJOY THIS CD.
Black Ark Afro-Reggae Fusion Sounds Pretty Good Now.......2006-06-12
Nobody is sure how the two Congolese musicians ended up at the Black Ark (there are two different stories in the CD notes) but this session with Scratch and what was essentially the 1977 version of The Upsetters is interesting, unique and a lot of fun to listen to--basically soucous melodies and vocal styles blended with reggae rhythms. You can look at it as either a laid-back version of soucous or a looser version of reggae. It's amazingly smooth and pretty elaborate, with horn sections (sax, trombone and trumpet), layered percussion and some dubby effects. Scratch contributes his characteristically wacky vocals and eccentric percussion to the first couple cuts, then sticks to the mixing board, which was his best instrument anyway.
Trojan managed to find a couple of unreleased tracks, which I suspect may have not been included because they were a little bit spacier than the others (the vocals on Masanga are drenched in echo--very cool). And there's a final, unrelated bonus track, African Freedom, that's a reggaefication of Paul Revere and the Raiders' Indian Nation--I think the compilers just wanted an excuse to release it somewhere.
I took a star off for the sound quality, but that's no knock on Trojan--this is the best we're probably going to get. They did manage to find a master tape, albeit a pretty beat-up one, and did an admirable job cleaning it up and transfering it, but there's only so much you can do (the previous CD release of this material, From the Heart of the Congo--not to be confused with Heartbeat Records' sublime Lee Perry/Congos CD Heart of the Congos--was "mastered" from mediocre quality vinyl and was nearly unlistenable). Part of the problem was that there was a pretty big band on this session (nine musicians plus The Jolly Boys on backing vocals and Scratch) and the resulting dynamic range was occasionally too much for the old tape, particularly when the whole ensemble was playing at once. But you get used to it--at the worst points it sorta sounds like it was recorded in the 40s--and it's well worth getting a hold of if you have any interest at all in African music, reggae or the great Lee Perry.
Mesmerizing.......2006-06-07
Super-cool CD. According to legend, Lee Scratch Perry "rescued" two starving African musicians who'd been abandoned in Jamaica. The results are EXCELLENT. There are no vocal-free tracks, however, since the vocals are not in English, they are not distracting, and in fact are mesmerizing. There have been earlier CDs containing some of these tracks, but this remaster is MUCH better sounding and includes high quality bonus tracks.
african roots!!.......2006-06-01
Later black ark period production by the great Lee Perry. An incredibly dubby mix of african music and heavy roots reggae...recommended highly!

The follow-up to the X-Ecutioners' revolutionary debut is well worth the five-year wait. It's bigger, badder, and even more technically proficient than its predecessor, weighing in at 20 tracks constructed from scratches, skits, beat juggles, flares and fades, cuts, pitch plays, studio trickery, and live drums and guitar (played by the DJs). MC performances come courtesy of M.O.P, Kool G Rap, Large Professor, and Pharoahe Monch, and there are DJ collabs with Premier, Dan the Automator, the Beat Junkies, and Triple Threat, as well as an unlikely but successful pairing with Mike Shinoda and Mr. Hahn of Linkin Park fame. It's a quality piece of work, with old- and new-school references liberally scattered throughout (check the updates of Marley Marl's "Marley Scratch," Whiz Kid's "Play That Beat Mr. DJ," and Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love"). A must. --Paul Sullivan

X-Ecutioners - Built From Scratch.......2006-04-17
Classic album. These guys ARE nasty on the turntables, one of the best. They put together the most complete and ILL sounding tracks ever. Tracks like "A Journey Into Sound" its f*cken amazing. These guys got mad skills on the turntables and putting together beats, hands down. If you hate on this, you dont know real skill on this sh** cause these guys are the sh**. One of their first albums to be released, and I recommend you go pick this up right now, if you like Turntablism, and Hip Hop. Because some of the joints on here got rapping on them, and most are beats included with some ILL scratching. Get this now.

With some really Nice Guest appearance, like da rap legendary Large Professor, some famous Rap Star like Big Pun, Xzibit, Inspectah Deck from WU TANG, even include two member of Mainstream Rap/Metal group Linkin Park!
Some of my Favorite is:

Solid Album.......2003-03-04
The album is a solid album. Though the skits can be a little long the album itself is well produced and the guest appearances give the album depth. The X-ectioners are definitely the premiere DJ group. Check out the solid introduction by Triple Threat DJs (Vinroc, Shortkut and Apollo) it's a great opener, if you like the X-ecutioners you'll enjoy Triple Threat .... I believe they have an album coming out....
Very good CD! The best DJ CD out there!.......2002-10-26
to tell you the truth, the only reason why I bought this CD was because I'm a big Linkin Park fan and I loved the "It's Goin Down" track and I wasn't expecting this to be that good of a CD, but boy was I wrong! I'm not really into hip-hop and rap (I like rock, but some rap is okay) but this CD really was very very good. The only other DJ CD I have is Freestylers "We Rock Hard" which I don't know if its even a DJ CD but it sure sounded like it, and I really loved that CD! anyway, I really recommend this CD to everyone who likes underground hip-hop/rap, and to anyone who actually enjoyed Linkin Park's my opinion kick [behind] "Reanimation" because "Built From Scratch" kind of sounds like some of the rap remixes! Get this album only if you like underground rap!

Prime Perry.......2004-09-16
This is a superb compilation for the hardcore "Scratch" completist and casual listener alike. Well worth the price of admission for the rare Junior Murvin tracks alone. "What a Sin" is a prime slice of Perry genius/madness, too. A great companion piece to the "Larks from the Ark" compilation.
If You Love Scratchie.......2003-05-23
If you love Lee Scratch Perry like I do, no need to hesitate,
go ahead and buy this excellent release. Not all songs on it
are "rare," but the tracks that are are wonderful.
My two favorite songs are: What A Sin, a longer song with that
trademark "bouncy" Scratch rhythm; and Walk The Streets,
an amazingly beautiful song. How can one man have so much genius?
The only reason I gave the CD 4 stars is, well, I'm a dub man,
and there's very little dub on this CD.
Oh, the CD comes with a kewl poster------like the cover picture.
Unfold it and hang it in your house-----it's bound to bring you
good luck.

While no collection of Lee "Scratch" Perry will ever be complete ~ Rounder Records comes very close with "Cutting Razor:Rare Cuts From the Black Ark", featuring seventeen classic recordings of the reggae great artists. This album is loaded with collectibles, for instance ~ "JUDGEMENT", "4 AND 20 DREADLOCKS", "WALK THE STREETS", "MISTER CRAVEN", "WHAT A SIN" and "STARING" all of which are previously unreleased tracks. Then, hold onto your dreadlocks we have "CUTTING RAZOR", "BIG TONGUE BUSTER", "YAMA KHY" are previously unreleased alternate mix that has never seen the light of day. A collection with an overview of Perry's heyday, an extension of more raw versions, but no less crutial listening. Historically important tracks from his legendary Black Ark studio, pure genius within the realm of memorable recordings. Remember, this is just a taste of what you have to look forward to when you become a Scratch Junkie like me.

This album is a wonderful example of the kind of music you hear all along the border between Mexico and the United States. It's unique in that you don't hear the music contained in this album in Mexico nor do you hear it in the states. It also contains music called "Chicken Scratch" from the Tohoho O'Odham tribe whose reservation fronts on the Mexican border. This is a great album.

Among the Best of the Latter Day Lee Perry.......2005-08-06
Two killer songs and some standard Scratch make up this 1990 collection. "Push Push" and "You Thought I was Dead" are the standouts here and worth the price by themselves, while "African Headcharge" and "Seven Devils Dead" are also fine examples of the Madman Perry style. As usual, ya gotta love the freestyle, always funky rantings from the Professor across each song. Here they include items ranging from Lufthansa to Edward Seaga to Hurricane Gilbert. All in all this is among the best of his post-Black Ark efforts.

fair.......2000-09-22
Like many Perry cds, one has to be careful and know what he/she is getting themselves into before buying..
This collection is mainly late 60's-early 70's Upsetters material, which is certainly a good thing. The problem is that most Perry cds that feature Upsetters material feature the same 7 or 8 tracks on it and perhaps rope you into getting it with a dub, etc; this cd is no different, offering "You Crummy" to go with the basics ("The Upsetter," "Cow Thief Skank," "People Funny Boy," "Bionic Rats," to name a few).
I am not in any way knocking on this cd- I like all the tracks o here- but am offering friendly advice on this and most of the other Perry/Upsetters material- look them all over prior to buying one, and see which sounds best or offers more of the same tracks for less money, (this one would likely qualify) then go from there.

MELTDOWN.......2002-09-24
The completion of his Black Ark studio in 1974 was the beginning of an unprecedented era of creativity for Lee Perry (AKA "Scratch" or "The Upsetter"). Over the next few years he was responsible for producing classic albums like "Super ape" and "Heart of the Congos" as well as a huge number of singles by many different artists, while stockpiling an almost unlimited supply of rhythms in the process. One consequence of his legendary productivity is the daunting number of Upsetter compilations that are now available, many of which are of dubious authenticity or contain a surplus of filler material, but this one is as bona fide as they come. It contains rare and previously unreleased material from the late 1970's taken from original master tapes in Perry's vast archives, and is up there with the Upsetter's very best releases under his own name.
Perry's productions from this period were as distinctive as they were innovative, and using laughably primitive equipment he somehow managed to come up with atmospheric mixes which listeners are still puzzling over today (all summed up by one of my favourite Perry quotes: "it was only four tracks on the machine, but I was picking up twenty from the extra terrestrial squad"). He has always been a volatile and unpredictable character with a reputation for being "not all there", but by the end of the 70's a combination of too much work, too much pressure (separation from his wife, money problems, hassle from local gangsters), too much alcohol and too much ganja started to drive him over the edge. His behaviour became increasingly bizarre, and after first completely covering the walls of the Black Ark with densely written graffiti, Perry began to physically wreck his own studio....
The standout track on this album is the paranoia-filled "Ashes and dust", the lyrics of which are almost a commentary on the Upsetter's disintegrating mental state at the time. Based on the strong "Vibrate on" rhythm, it's one of his most masterfully intense productions and a fine example of the earthy Black Ark sound at its best. Perry delivers a mystical invocation over a mix filled with eerie sound effects and a juxtaposition of voices blending in with his own - waxing lyrical about life, the universe and everything while threatening past adversaries like Clement "Coxsone" Dodd and Chris Blackwell with retribution and generally inviting the men in white coats to come and take him away....
Elsewhere, "Free up the prisoners", which Perry somehow keeps going for nearly 13 minutes, and the extra-heavy "In this Iwa" are other highlights, but there are no weak moments to be found on this consistently impressive collection, so you have no excuse for not purchasing "Soundz from the hotline" immediately.
Incidentally, the Black Ark studio was completely destroyed by fire in 1983 and many people suspect Perry of deliberately burning it down himself to foil his enemies, real or imagined. But only he knows for sure....
very good.......2000-09-21
From 1993, this cd finds the Upsetter making a very viable album for the 90's, complete with the instantly recognizable sounds from guests artists Chinna Smith on guitar, Family Man Barrett on bass, brother Carlie on drums, Augustus Pablo on melodica, and Sly Dunbar on drums (among other guests).
The results make for a very strong lp that shows that Perry can still deliver the goods. Standout tracks are "Bionic Rat," "Babylon a Fall,", "News Flash," and the eerie "Free the Prisoners."
As with most Perry efforts, it needs a few listens to allows everything to sink in, but once it does, it makes for a very satisfying listen.
EXTRA HEAVY AND DOUBLE IRIE!.......2000-06-21
This album is a total gem from Scratch. The way Soundsz was put together is how a dub album is meant to be. The beats are fierce, the lyrics are strong, and the album holds itself together perfectly (unlike some of the throw-togethers the record cos. release). You'll love this one.
Montreal Got It Right!.......2000-02-03
Excellent from beginning to end. The reviewer from Montreal said it well. Buy this one!
reviewer from Montreal.......1999-09-08
Don't be fooled by the cheesey title (sounds with a "z"), this album is absolutely incredible. Not a bad track on the album. Free up the prisoners is 13 minutes of the trippiest, most complex reggae I have ever heard. Every song is authentic, possessing that rustic, deep sound that is so characteristic of blark ark releases in the 70's. The album vacillates between moody, "dub-like" excursions and piercing vocal melodies. Not to be missed. If you like this album, try Scientific Dub by Scientist, one of the most underated dub albums ever made.

Album Description
When Eroica originally released Volumes I and II of Bela Bartok's solo piano works, featuring world class Hungarian-American pianist June de Toth, our primary mission was to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his death. With that mission accomplished, Ms de Toth is now engaged in completing the Bartók cycle. She will be the first woman to record the Bartók solo piano works in their entirety. These beginnings have launched Eroica on a fast track to our goal of international acceptance and recognition. We have initiated an intensive series of auditions, which have resulted in the signing of over a hundred brilliantly gifted new artists. We are honored by the fact that these artists and ensembles have chosen the Eroica label to introduce their CDs to a world wide record store and internet audience. Auditions and negotiations with other world class classical artists are also underway at this writing. You may order them directly from Eroica or Vitaminic, as well as by phone, fax or secured credit card orders.
You will find Eroica CDs listed in the Schwann Opus catalog, and at all Muze kiosks. You can also order for CDs from your favorite record store, including Tower, Borders Books and Music, Hastings, Sound Warehouse, Media Play, Blockbuster, and all other record stores. Just tell the sales person to look us up in the Alliance One Stop and/or Muze kiosk data bases. Eroica CDs are distributed internationally by Myong Eum Music Co., Ltd. (Korea) Francemp3 (France) Diapason (Italy); PeopleSound and AvantNoise (Great Britain); CD4 (Portugal); H&B Direct (22 Countries); and in the U.S. by Amazon.com; Barnes and Nobel, Borders Books and Music; CD Now; CD Universe, Every CD; The Orchard Music Distributors; Piano Tonight; the ClassicalHub;Follett Audio Visual; MP3.com; Yahoo Music; and most other major internet sites.
