Awesome to hear the old masters almost live........2007-03-27
It was an awesome experience to hear Ragtime and early blues played by the masters themselves. When you hear the music from their own hands, if not their own pianos, it makes the music immediate, and makes even clearer the stylistic differences of the various American musical pioneers. The sound quality is excellent. I'd strongly recommend this recording to anyone who enjoys early-20th-century jazz.
The Greatest Ragtime of the Century.......2005-10-30
What a terrific CD. What a joy to add to your life. Everyone should begin their day with this Great Ragtime. We would all be much better.
As a former dancer, Flapper, wth the Charleston in my routine, I do appreciate Great Music. I'm not quite as good as I used to be, but neither are you, Gal. Will be 66 next birthday. Still have the rhythm and love life.
Put some spice in your life and don't let this CD get away. Please, just get it today.
A great introduction and sampling........2005-08-23
Prior to this album, the only ragtime I really knew was "The Entertainer" and "Maple Leaf Rag". I don't know how this album fares for enthusiasts, but I've thoroughly enjoyed it. It introduced me to several different composers. The way the album is organized by giving you a two or three song block by each composer is good. As you listen to this, you can easily hear the different styles from one composer to another. As for the recording quality, I don't have any complaints whatsoever. Each note is clear without much noticable fuzz or hissing. The versions of Scott Joplin's songs are played a bit brash and speedy when compared to Joshua Rifkin, but I think they sound livlier because of it. Overall a solid release.

I found the album to be real. The young artist really put his heart into his work. I give shout outs to all of the artist that are featured on the album. Especially the "Fallen Angels". Check out songs like "Lets Ride","Where Ya Heart At". I would advise everyone who apprciates the art of realism to check this album out. So don't be a hater on that true valley click. Keep it real. Get down witt "BIG BANK" so we can get "OUT OF CONTROL".

A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19
This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

The exploits of Ian Fleming's British super-agent James Bond have long since become the longest running film series in history, spanning 40 years and counting. Not the least of the cycle's charm has been its music, a body of work that encompasses pop clichés (the twangy guitar of Monty Norman's original "James Bond Theme") and elegant underscores alike. While this collection spans music from Dr. No to The World Is Not Enough, decades of various legal entanglements prevented it from becoming the ultimate Bond music anthology. This is more a credible simulation, a newly recorded collection of cues and suites (including music previously unreleased on the original soundtracks) performed by Nic Raine and the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra. With John Barry's lush, ever-evocative scores both forming the core and setting the tone (but also featuring the work of George Martin, David Arnold, Michael Kamen, Bill Conti, and Eric Serra), it's the most comprehensive--if not exactly authentic--collection of Bond music yet attempted. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
almost the perfect James Bond collection.......2005-07-20
this 4 CD box has most of the familiar James Bond compositions.
Still, some tunes are missing(from for instance Thunderball and For Your Eyes Only)and most of the time the attention is on the instrumental version of the title track which is a bit of a shame. And yet, there are too many great pieces on this collection to make it a failure.Alpine Drive,Dawn Raid at Fort Knox,On Her Majesty's Secret Service(every track),Miss Goodhead and so on.All great pieces that not only show the great talent of John Barry but also the great power of James Bond films.Cause when you hear the music, you see the scenes in front of you.
Very much a recommendation to all Bond and Barry fans although sometimes it focusses too much on title songs. The only solution is to buy all separate soundtracks.
Good Collection.......2005-02-24
Very nice packaging and good tracks from the Bond music library make this an anoutstanding item. "From Russia With Love" and "Diamonds Are Forever" contain beautiful and energetic renditions. The John Barry music is handled quite well. I didn't real care for the David Arnold selections. "The World Is Not Enough" was weak. Overall it is a good collection just the same.
Not excatly what I expected.......2003-04-10
I when I read some of the reviews of this I thought that this was a complete collection of all the originals of the Theme songs of every James Bond movie and remakes done by the Prague Philharmonic of some of the other songs in the various movies. After recieveing this ... I started to listen to it and found out that it was all done by the orchestra. The are very good, but to a point it is not the same thing as owning a disc will all the orignal songs on it. Overall, this good if all the you want is the orchestral versions of most of the songs in the movies or the suites out of some of the movies. To a point these don't compare to the orignals. Keep looking if you want a set with all the orignals songs in it.
The James Bond CD for the John Barry purist?.......2003-01-28
Let's cut to the chase. Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do John Barry's work justice. 90% of this collection is as close as you can get to the original James Bond soundtracks. The other 10% lends itself to some artistic license with respect to the arrangements. Most notable is the main theme to Goldfinger. Also Nic slips in a few previously unreleased tracks. You will find these on the On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Golden Eye tracks. This CD boxed set is definitely made for the Bond soundtrack fan. The die hard John Barry "purist"/ traditionalist may find some of these tracks questionable at first, but after a few times Nic Raine's artistic license gives a fresh perspective to the familiar Bond/ Barry themes. The only reservation I have with this CD set is with some of selections that are performed. For instance, from Goldfinger, "Dawn Raid At Fort Knox" was a poor selection considering the selection available on that particular soundtrack. The most famous 007 soundtrack of all I dare say. Overall Nic hits the mark, and this CD set is a tribute to Barry's (as well as, George Martin's, Marvin Hamlish's, and Bill Conti's and David Arnold's) work. It's all here in one collection. I am a die-hard Bond soundtrack fan, and to the casual soundtrack fan I say this CD is set all you need to experience the Bond music legacy. To those who are hard core 007 soundtrack fans ...this is a FANTASTIC "addition" to your collection. This has to be the BEST (and probably the only) 007 "soundtrack" compilation. Whereas all the others feature the "main themes" from the Bond films as originally recorded, this one truly gives you the Bond experience.
Very enjoyable with most of the BOND music you'd want........2002-12-08
This is similar but more comprehensive than another BOND collection on one CD by the City of Prague Philharmonic. These are good renditions but clearly not the orginals. I must ask if the Prague Philharmonic does not own a harp? It is glaringly missing in the Goldfinger themes and i am sure on others. That harp is an exciting and beautiful touch to the wonderful GOLDFINGER theme and its absents is unfortuneatly very noticeable. Also some of the other themes can even sound muzaky if thats a word(elevator music)
It gets 3 solid stars good collection yet defineatly something is lacking.

The English Dancing Master (1651,...)
Music can be listened to from varying distances of knowledge and desire. From afar, it can be nothing but an auditory backdrop, a series of rythms we vaguely recognize as belonging to a particular period or style; we scarcely notice what instruments are playing; we tap our feet absentmindedly, content but ignorant.
If we come a bit closer though, and start asking questions about what the music is about, our ears pick up and we begin to distinguish a bit more of what is going on and thanks to whom - in this case the group is a "broken consort" made up of flute, lute, harpsichord, violin or anti-masks, whether they involve improvisation, variation or polyphony...Gradually, we allow ourselves to move away from our own, contemporary freedom, nourished by the sounds of jazz and rock, Africa and Arabia, towards another freedom - that of Elizabethan times. Images begin to coalesce inside our brains - drinking songs in Shakespearian taverns; peasant couples grabbing hands and whirling about on the lawn during village festivals; ladies and gentlemen of the court ezecuting steps imbued with gravity and grace, learned during the hours of precious leisure...Yes, dancing is what it's all about - most pieces on this CD are based on simple melodies from John Playford's collection The Dancing Master (! 1651), and have been harmonized by the Witches musicians themselves. If we move still closer, we come to see that this music (like all forms of music, in fact...including techno!) is a universe unto itself. It contains endless nuances of harmony and tempo, daunting complexities of execution, an original choice of instruments...Here as elsewhere, it's the hardest work that leads to the greatest freedom, and the rigorous respect of rules and forms that give access to the highest magic (we mustn't forget that the word magic, likemagi, has to do with the sacred). Suddenly we are utterly wakeful and attentive:gods, fairies, elves and goblins go filing past us; we withdraw in the company of Queen Elizabeth for a revery in solo lute, we leap and twirl with teh Scots to the sound of bagpipes, and hear the slight mistuning of the six-holed whistle in Drive the Cold Winter Away as a desolate cry over an endless expanse of snow... The whole thing becomes resonant, throbbing, alive, and we see that these contemporary artists indeed live up to their chosen name of Witches - yes, like sorcerers and sorceresses of every time and place, they have a highly refined intelligence, an in-depth knowledge of the ingredients patiently collected for their book of spells, and the ability to transport us, metamorphose us...At the stroke of a wand, we become the Virgin Queen, go dancing body and soul with the peasants of yesteryear, vibrate in unison with the lovely pandora... Four centuries shimmer into nothingness and the Renaissance is now - yes, renaissance, a rebirth: thanks to the music, thanks to the close and careful apprehension of ancient music, we can know what it's like to be born and reborn afresh at every instant.
Customer Reviews:
Bewitching French Performance of 16th/17thC English Dances.......2003-10-26
This is a revelation - subtitled "Mr Playford's English Dancing Master"- a group of early English dances mostly from the 16th and 17th Centuries, some clearly Celtic in origin, others distinctly English, beautifully adapted and performed by a gifted group of French musicians, featuring violin, flute, lute/guitar, viola da gamba, and the clavichord. Excellent notes in English and French. The introduction carries an earlier recommendation "This day I bought the book of country-dances against my wife's woman Gosnell comes, who dances finely. And there meeting Mr Playford, he did give me his Latin Songs of Mr Deering's, which he lately printed.." - Samuel Pepys, Diary, Saturday, 22 November, 1662. Playford published several editions of his "Dancing Master" omitting pieces which had gone out of fashion and substituting up-to-date ones. This anthology culls some of the choicest.
