With each new Dan Zanes and Friends release, many fans worry that his homespun magic will eventually hit the right note with the masses. Zanes' music, as offbeat as it is organic, is so special to forward-thinking young families that plenty have batted around half-baked plans to attach a password to it. Anybody else can sell out, the thinking goes, but please, please not him. Catch That Train, then, is bound to meet with a lot of hand-wringing. For one thing, it's the first Zanes and Friends release since the crazy-haired, asparagus-stalk thin artist started appearing in videos on the Playhouse Disney channel. For another, Starbucks has stepped in to lend a promotional hand. Those are ominous indicators indeed, but if the largely on-track Catch That Train proves anything, it's that Zanes isn't lock-stepping it with the boardroom goons just yet. Once again, the high-profile collaborators (The Blind Boys of Alabama, Nick Cave, Natalie Merchant) could cause a childless hipster to heed the all-aboard call, but also as on previous discs, it's the usual suspects who supply some of the strongest tracks: Barbara Brousal on "Mariposa Ole," Father Goose on "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie," and the Rubi Theater Company on "Walkin' the Dog." True, "Let's Shake" seems suspiciously TV-ready; skip it and pretend it never happened. Then keep your fingers crossed that, once this train leaves the station, Zanes--plainspoken hero to so many--won't trade it in for a stretch limo. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2007-07-28

My daughter loves watching Dan Zane, so we decided to buy the cd. It was a great price and we are all enjoying it.

5 out of 5 stars my 2 1/2 yr old son loves this.......2007-07-24

Great kids album, upbeat and mellow at the same time. My son who loves trains enjoys listening to this one.

3 out of 5 stars Very good, but not our favorite.......2007-07-01

This is our sixth Dan Zanes album, and I guess one of them has to be our least favorite. I am sorry to say that Catch That Train! holds that dubious distinction in our household. I am not writing this review to slam the album, but merely to offer the opinion that if you are new to Dan Zanes, you may wish to consider one of his other albums first.

As other reviews have indicated, Dan Zanes is fun, loose and all about the sing-along. I suspect that's why he collaborates so often and so well. If you're looking for tight, sophisticated arrangements, look elsewhere. If you're looking for music that everyone can get into, music that is accessible to children without being cloying to adults, then start filling your cart. Bruce Springsteen gets a lot of credit for bringing the Seeger catalog and other folk treasures to younger audiences, but we think he got the idea from Dan! We love the folk/americana covers, Dan's originals and the songs that he pulls in from other cultural traditions. Here are the albums we own and how we'd rank them:

1. Sea Music
2. Parades and Panoramas
3. Rocket Ship Beach
4. Family Dance
5. House Party
6. Catch That Train

5 out of 5 stars Kids music has changed for the best!.......2007-06-12

Dan Zanes has set a milestone for kids music, no more does parents have to be forced to listen to Barney or the Wiggles, (ugh!). With Dan Zanes, parents and kids can both enjoy the great sound and lyrics of classic fables set to a variety of musical beats. This is Dan's latest album, which we really enjoy on car trips or just to crank up while at home. You'll find yourself singing the music on here long after the kids have gone to bed.

5 out of 5 stars Music kids and parents can enjoy.......2007-06-01

Dan Zanes' music is fun and genuine and does not come across as so many recent bands that seem to be trying to cash in on Playhouse Disney and Noggin. He works with lots of guest musicians and the diversity is refreshing.

As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." But if you're a completist and/or a devotee of Howard Shore's pounding tympani and overwhelming choral compositions (featured particularly prominently on disc 3, a large chunk of which is devoted to a battle scene), then this set is a dream come true. Audiophiles should note that the fourth disc, a DVD, offers the score in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Fire up those speakers so the whole shire can hear. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

An epic film score receives epic treatment with The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings. Released for the first time on CD, the complete score for the first film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy contains more than 180 minutes of music on three CDs plus a DVD-Audio disc of the entire score in Surround Sound. Breathtaking and majestic, the 2001 Oscar and Grammy winning score compsted by Howard Shore also includes Enya's Oscar nominated "May It Be." For fans of any of The Lord of the Rings films, the Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings is an essential experience.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-06-15

I picked up this set because I am both a LOTR fan, movies and books and I need music to help me work. There are some tracks that I skipped over, like the short little ditties in the bar, but many of the songs, such as the Elvish chants are easy to get lost in - its just too bad they don't last longer. The packaging really is well done, though the DVD disc was loose when I received it in the mail, but unharmed. I will have to wait until the price on the second set comes down a little more, but I can't wait for ROTK.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-06-12

This is by far the editon to get if you loved the lord of the rings soundtrack. It has every song on it from the extended edition. and the DVD-A version is very nice.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Music tracks from Movie.......2007-05-03

Brings the movie back as you listen to the full version of the track.

3 out of 5 stars Complete?.......2007-04-07

This CD collection is wonderful; it has much of the material from the movie that was only included in the extended edition DVD, but it is far from complete. While it does have the complete version of "The Passing of the Elves" and two versions of "The Road Goes Ever On", many of the songs are highly incomplete and inferior to the originals. "Aniron," the theme for Aragorn and Arwen performed by Enya, is incomplete and the lyrics are hard to match to what is being sung. The sound quality for this song is even worse on the accompanying DVD, which is supposed to have all of the music in "superior sound". The song "Prophecy" is reduced to two barely-audible lines and "May It Be" is shortened and different than the original. $60 for this when there are more complete songs on the original soundtrack is ridiculous.

3 out of 5 stars Great Collection, Poor Packaging.......2007-04-03

I realy can't add to what others have said about this set, the music is simply the best LOTR soundtrack collection out there! It is all here, and the contents of this set will make any LOTR fan happy and the music DVD is a great one disc addition if you want to hear the entire score in one sitting (to which I have done a number of times already).
My only complaint is the somewhat flimsy cardboard box that houses the contents of this musical treasure. Mine came damaged, and considering the price, I expected better packaging. This is a minor quabble on my part and NO, I havent returned it due to the fact that the music itself Is what I truly treasure, It just would have been nicer to have recieved it undamaged.

This is an amazing CD. Not only does it benefit breast cancer research (don't copy and give this out, buy everyone their own copy so it contributes!) but I listen to it all the time. This is absolutely the best album in my collection of CDs! The tracks cover every mood and are a real pick me up of great artists. I have gone out and bought a lot of the artist's full CDs because of their great songs on this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Who Killed The Grape?.......2007-07-23

The much melinged and exhustively chronicled story behind Moby Grape goes something like this. The genius A&R team at Columbia Records signed MB in the summer of 1966. Thinking that they had the next Jefferson Airplane on their hands, they set out to launch their new find with a unique and untried promotion. Instead of selecting one or possibly two singles to release, they choose instead to release all 12 tracks as singles. This unfocused and confusing marketing stratgey led to little or virtually no air play on top-forty radio and mired the band for what could have been a huge initial launch.

The follow-up album "Wow" contained fewer songs that could have found their way into a top-forty format and some quirky gimmicks, like the "Gene Autry" track and the "Grape Jam" bonus Lp. But even these could not save Wow from mideocore sales and little or no air-play. So how valid is the theory that the Columbia Record Execs killed Grape or is there more to the story? I'm not so sure if it was a case of poor marketing or simply a band that couldn't produce a pure "radio-friendly". three minute, danceable, humable and not-so-forgettable single.

Even after repeated listenings, I can't help but think that "Listen My Friends" contains some beautiful songs by a band that could not be viewed as short on "chops". No way, these guys could hold their own with most any band of their day, But was the song writing first rate? Could they stack up against The Airplane, The Doors, The Byrds, The Jimi Hendrix Experience or The Who? I'll have to agree with other reviewers who have called them "second tier". Afterall what's so bad about being considered in the same breath as Steve Miller, Country Joe & The Fish, Santana, The Blues Project, Electric Flag, The James Gang, Blood Sweat & Tears, Love and so many other fine bands of the golden era of classic rock.

3 out of 5 stars ''2ND TIER BAND INDEED''.......2007-07-12

Reading these overblown hyped up reviews was truly a treat!!To much acid i suspect, especially S.king.The claim that they had better '5 part' harmony then the BEACH BOYS is especially ridiculous and also the claim that J.Spence was a top 5 best guitarist makes me cringe ,just listen to his vibrato and string bending and you'll hear the same amatuerish uncontrolled drivel that many lower tiered guitarist displayed in that era.I know this soundS like just a bashing session but it is not,it's just reality., the music on this disc is very good for what it is a SAN FRANCISCO TYPE MUSIC BAND, NO BETTER NO WORSE THAN THE OTHERS FROM THAT AREA AND TIME!

5 out of 5 stars On Your Way To Ooh Mama Ooh Omaha!!!!!.......2007-07-09

Where exactly do you place Moby Grape in the strata of American pop music circa 1966-69? I can't honestly place them in the upper echelon with the likes of The Byrds, Dylan, Simon & Garfunkle, Hendrix and the Doors. But certainly they do belong smack-dab in the middle of the second tier, with The Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, The Dead, Buffalo Springfield, The Band, Mamas & Pappas, Santana, Steve Miller Band and of course Love, the other great Bay area band that never had a top-40 hit.

With that said "Listen My Friends" will provide you with your 20 song fix of MG. Actually there's only 19 tacks. The last cut is a throw-away radio ad. I wasn't a huge fan back then. But I did have the first two Lp's and the Grape Jam Lp, an interesting jam session with Mike Bloomfield & Al Kooper. This new collection has sure found a home in my car. Listening to it has gotten me back into a Ooh Mama Ooh!!!Grape Moby solid groove ....Or maybe its that Murderous vendetta for The Judge that keeps you comming back for another look at Motorcycle Ireane?....What ever your taste in Grape Jam, Listen My Friends is vintage and ripe. Pop a grape into your mouth right now. Close your eyes and you'll be on your way to Omaha....Ooh Mama Ooh...Omaha!!!!Enjoy.

1 out of 5 stars Reviewing the group rather than the record.......2007-06-12

A new record is out, and I want to know if it is good. I already know the previous work of Moby Grape and I do not need Sam King telling me how good the group is. He is right but redundant. I want to know if there is anaything new on the record that I have not got or heard. From reading the 8 reviewers, I see no mention of any new material. I assume that everything on the record is recycled from the original releases and several previous compilations. A proper review might then begin with: "why does anyone need this. The second hand stores have copies of the previous compilations." The next issue is why the record company did not release something new, like the Amsterdam concert. Should record companies be rewarded when they have such conservative release policies. Why buy these songs again? Foolish, right.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't Live Up to the Hype.......2007-06-09

Moby Grape is absolutely the most over-rated group to emerge from the late sixties. What little appeal they might have had is mitigated by the ridiculous claims of their followers, i.e. "better first album than the Beatle, Byrds, Stones, Airplane et al". At best, this is a highly debatable claim. At worst, it's a complete falsehood (my view).

Spence's work on the first two Airplane albums is better than his work with the Grape thanks to the far superior vocals of Marty Balin/Signe Anderson/Grace Slick and the intiguing guitar interplay provided by Casady, Kantner and Kaukonen.

I've tried to get into the Grape, several times. But the hype is such a turn off. Particularly when the group fails miserably to live up to it.

4 out of 5 stars Good companion for Battlestar Fans.......2007-05-07

If you're a Battlestar Galatica Fan, this audio is an excellent companion to your collection. Passacaglia, Forgiven, and The Shape of Things to Come are emotional and addictive orchestral soundtracks. Not every song from the first season is included in this CD. The opening credit songs for the UK and the US versions and the battle songs (The Thousandth Landing, Battle on the Asteroid) are included. Battlestar Muzaktica is quite odd and doesn't fit with the collection of songs.

5 out of 5 stars Captures the feel of the show.......2007-04-11

Has a great selection of songs from the 1st season. I like show/movie CDs that you can picture the scenes and emotion of the actors when you hear the song. The Celtic underlays are great, and the Taiko drumming style is very well used for building intensity in the music. If you really like the series, you should probably really enjoy the music as well!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Soundtrack.......2007-04-11

If you like the music in a scene that just blends in and makes the scene even more emotional or suspenseful, that is what the scores from season one do on this cd. I initially bought it to for the prologue (cylon music) and the two main titles (U.S. and U.K.) but after listening to the entire cd, I have become completely addicted to it. The titles of the scores usually give you a hint of the scene and the liner notes also tell you the episode that they are from but the soundtrack has definitely made rewatching season one an even more intriguing experience. The scores with words, are written by Bear and are in various languages, but the words, especially the opera piece, are actually so dead one with the scene and in this specific scene hilarious. I love this soundtrack. If you are someone who is addicted to really grasping everything that happens in this show and watch and analyze it beyond face value, this is an added bonus to have in your collection. I highly recommend it!!!

4 out of 5 stars BSG.......2007-04-10

Man I love the Classic and the Present BSG's So Inaturally find the SoundTrack/Score A joy and very relaxing. They tend to sound very similar but they are very diffrent.

5 out of 5 stars Agree with everyone else.......2007-03-28

There have been lots of raving reviews of this album, as well as the equally sensational season 2 soundtrack. I just wanted to add my opinion on one track, "Destiny". An earlier review describes an Arabic string instrument being used, but it is actually a biwa, a traditional Japanese instrument that has such a distinct sound that it's hard to imagine it being used for anything other than traditional gagaku music. I don't know if anyone but McCreary has ever tried to use this instrument for something else, but it hardly matters. The fact that McCreary managed to use it so effectively in a piece that is so different from gagaku music is a perfect testament to his unique genius. I'm really looking forward to following McCreary's career.

Description

Tamia is one of the world's most loved R&B singers with a career highlighted by two certified gold albums, has arrived with her a new studio album and fourth release featuring a mixture of club tracks, duets and mainstream R&B songs produced by proven hitmakers Rodney Jerkins and Shep Crawford. Four time Grammy Nominee and Winner of the Best Vocal Performance Award, Tamia's long awaited follow-up to her hit record More finds the sultry, sophisticated singer at both a creative and personal apex. The 15-song disc, Between Friends, sizzles with her trademark sensuality, but it is also buoyed by a sparkling personality that her fans don't always get to see. Like her past efforts, the disc is anchored by stunning vocal displays that rival this generation's greatest voices. The album features the hit track "Can't Get Enough" which is one of the most highly anticipated songs from one of radio's favorite artists.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars This album is excellent.......2007-07-06

Go on Tamia! This album is so good. I can drive to it, exercise to it, relax to it, and sleep to it! I am truly inspired by Tamia and have been a fan of hers since forever. She sings like a bird, her voice is beautiful! My favorite songs are ME (love the video & the message), ALMOST, PROTECT MY HEART, LAST FIRST KISS, SITTIN ON THE JOB, CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF YOU...I could go on and on. Excellent job Tamia, I can't wait to see what the next album will be like. I am your fan!

5 out of 5 stars Tamia is one of the most under rated female R&B singers.......2007-06-19

It was May when I heard a cut from Between Friends, 6 months after the CD was released. Tamia has on of the most distincitve voices on the scene and she is often slept on and gone unnoticed. She is a force to be reckoned with.

4 out of 5 stars Tamia is the truth.......2007-06-07

Tamia is a rare artist who is talented and can more than carry a note. Between friends has everything you could ever want in a cd. For example this album has the club banger (Too Grown For That), the slow jams (Can't Get Enough Of You & Last First Kiss) and a powerful track (Me). Tamia does a great job of bring the songs to life and she sounds great over any beat. This album will definitely stay in your rotation!!!

MY TOP FIVE

1. The Way I Love You
2. Can't Get Enough Of You
3. Almost
4. Happy
5. Become Us

5 out of 5 stars Hats off to a Job well done!.......2007-06-05

I became a big fan of Tamia's when I was in college with the second Cd A NU Day and since then that chic has been blowing me away. I heard the African release of Between Friends before it was released in the US and was blown away. She is one of the most under-rated singers in the industry. In a world of none singing little kids she provides a breath of fresh air. "Me" can easily rival "Stranger in my House". Become Us" and "To Grown for That" are crazy up-tempo tracks. I instantly gravitated to "Almost" the minute I heard it! I've never heard that concept before. Last First Kiss says it all again this introduced another concept in a world of tasteless unoriginal R&B. "Sitting on the Job" is another one of my favorites. I'm really happy she changed this into a full song.

If you don't have this in your collection then you are truly missing a gem. HATS OFF TO TAMIA!

Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the "greatest" concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ("Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da," and "Heigh Ho" were hits off of Vol. 1; "Bare Necessities," "It's a Small World," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come" stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. Once again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad "I'll Try," from 2002's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually reaches back through the years to re-raise the curtain on Toy Story 2 ("When She Loved Me," performed by Sarah McLachlan), The Lion King ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight"), Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews's classic "A Spoonful of Sugar"), Pinocchio ("Give a Little Whistle"), and a bundle of treasured others, bottoming out at 1933's "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" from The Three Little Pigs. Vol. 3 is not without its weak moments--would a G-rated movie-goers' poll produce Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston" or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's "Topsy Turvy" on a hits list? Seems unlikely. Still, the bulk of these tracks are, as the included Little Mermaid song goes, "Part of Your World," and the spread of decades they represent proves their staying power. Don't expect Disney to latch the lid on its inexhaustible archives until a dozen or so of these records, each as strong as the next, beckon you back for more. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Disney Music.......2007-05-07

Nothing brings sweet recollection of Disney movies like hearing the wonderful songs. In an age where there so much music with no redeeming qualities, these Disney CDs are priceless. Wonderful for the entire family to listen to around the house or in the car while traveling. We can't help but sing along. We love that these are the original tracks from the movies! Wonderful! We now have all three volumes.

I love the songs on this volume. I'll Try by Jonatha Brooke is such an amzing somg. I especially bought this CD fort that song but, was pleasantly surprsed by the rest of the playlist.

4 out of 5 stars Great Disney Music.......2006-02-21

I have bought the first 2 volumes of Disney's Greatest Hits and the 3rd volume doesn't disapoint. My 2 young children love to listen to this CD and talk about the movies that they come from. A definate must have!

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Vol 1 and Vol 2.......2005-09-11

This Disney CD represents the "leftovers" that didn't make it on Vol 1 and Vol 2 of this series. Although it has some of my favorites, I don't listen to the entire CD often. Disney could have done a better job of editing the which sound files should make the cut on this one. Still, it's nice to have all 3 CDs.

At a moment when mainstream music is clogged with a surfeit of stale, formulaic songs and huge egos, Dan Zanes has found the Drano. Family Dance, his second kids' record (after the fab Rocket Ship Beach), again comes through with big-name helpers--Sandra Bernhard, Rosanne Cash, and Loudon Wainwright III among them--but instead of assembling a mixed bag of self-important numbers, Zanes, who produced and plays on all but one of 15 tracks, maintains a cohesive vibe that's low-key and playful. Yet here's a disc that's all over the map, genre-wise. Gruffster Rankin' Don, a.k.a. Father Goose, rasta-raps his way through "The Hokey Pokey" and "Skip to My Lou," the Sandy Girls carry us off to a colorful Caribbean village for "Linstead Market," Cash folks up "Fooba Wooba John," and Leadbelly's "Rock Island Line" makes a stop in Memphis bluesland. Zanes's originals--"Jump Up," "Wonder Wheel," and "Thrift Shop," performed as a duet with Bernhard--manage to be wholesome, happy, and hip all at once, no mean feat. But it's the music making on Family Dance that impresses most of all. Fiddles, beatboxes, mandolins, tubas, banjos, and concertina elbow their way onto these tracks, and they're balanced by Zanes's arrangements and backup singer Barbara Brousal's graceful voice and guitar work. Kids 2 and up will be likewise captivated by the chunky board-book packaging, again with original artwork. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Two weeks..........2007-06-12

It took us two weeks to find out what our daughter was happily going around the house singing (3 at the time). And finally Sesame Street came on, and she said her song was on. It was 'Mailti' by Dan Zanes, and once that was
on my daughter just danced and sang away.

Since then we have embraced Dan's music into our family music circle. The lyrics are clean and catchy, and the rythm is simple enough for even a child to keep up with.

2 out of 5 stars Most tracks are ok, but the two by "Father Goose" are awful........2007-05-04

My son loves the music, but the singing by "Father Goose" is unbearably nasal and off-pitch on "Holey Pokey" and "Skip to My Lou".
Those two tracks make me cringe and I skip them every time my son plays the CD. However, several songs are wonderfully musical. For example, Linstead Market is just delightful.

5 out of 5 stars Let yourself go..........2007-04-14

T. Bittner from Peroria should read her review again.
"My kids seem to like it (the ones I don't hit the skip button for) but I am not going to sacrifice myself when there are plenty of other recordings that they and I both like."
If you don't want to 'sacrifice' once in a while and let your kids grow and find what they like, leave the room. A little fun and free expression is what childhood is all about! Sometimes it is about what they like. This is how they find out who THEY are.
Overall, my son likes the music. It is especially fun to waltz with him in my arms to 'Streets of New York'. Thanks to Dan Zanes, my son can find out it is fun to mix the old with the new.

2 out of 5 stars hard for Mom to tolerate.......2007-02-19

I love folk music, but this CD contains only 2 songs that I like and only 2 others that I can even tolerate. My kids seem to like it (the ones I don't hit the skip button for) but I am not going to sacrifice myself when there are plenty of other recordings that they and I both like.
Why don't I like it? Zanes has a croak similar to Bob Dylan's; with all due respect to Dylan's great songwriting, I don't enjoy his singing. Zane's friends vary in talent but none of them seem able to harmonize together. The songs in a minor key are particularly grating, such as "All Around the Kitchen" which many people seem to like, though I can't see why. The instrumentation is nothing special either. Don't buy this just because you like the song "Jump Up" from Sesame Street; you should listen before you buy to make sure the rest of it matches your taste.

5 out of 5 stars House Party and Family Dance.......2007-02-18

If you are looking for something different from the typical childrens music, this is it. My family has been addicted to Laurie Berkner since the summer and we needed something different. We are enjoying Dan Zanes so much. We find ourselves singing and dancing along in our kitchen and our van. This afternoon we were listening to Waltzing Matilda and my 4 year old daughter stopped playing and announced that her grandpa would love to dance to this song! We also love all the spanish that is mixed into the music. We like to try and guess what they are singing about. I am so glad we have added them to our collection.

The range of artists stepping up to pay tribute to the master electric guitarist as he turns ninety is staggering. From '50s and '60s guitar slingers like Buddy Guy, Keith Richards, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, and Steve Miller to stars of subsequent decades like Billy Gibbons, Joe Perry, Richie Sambora, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, they cross continents and generations. The songs celebrate the Les Paul guitar as well as the man. While he appears throughout, he's part of a generally raucous setting that leaves no volume knob unturned. The guests are often also the vocalists, but it's the guitars that carry the day. Purists may wag their fingers at the use of Sam Cooke's vocals in a contemporary recording, but Les Paul himself was never afraid of what new possibilities a tape recorder could unlock. --David Greenberger

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars RIpping it up with Les.......2007-06-14

Wow. Les at 90 going after it with Jeff, my favorite guitarist ever? I think "Ain't that Good News" is the best song on the album, but not simply because of Jeff, though I am biased. They do some cool scuttle-buttin' together. Most other tracks, though average to good, are crammed with too many and too much guitar work, making most cuts plain noise-makers. There are some good cuts, but as others have said, who chose these songs? Some aren't even Les-type songs, and the players have no real connection to Les. I agree with others who have voted for Dickey Betts, Jimmy Page and other true Les Pauler's. But, we have what we have and that' all that we have. I would recommend it to other guitarists/blues/rock affecinado's, but think the Les and Mary benefit misses the true nature of what Les was about, although there is a ton of electronic gizmos used on the album-hey, maybe that is what it was about, not what songs they played, but what gizmo's they used. They should have included that in the liner notes. Any way, I will plug once more for Jeff's participation, because I think it is the one song where there aren't 49 guitarists slinging away and you can't tell who is playing what solos or which rhythym chops. Go Jeff Go! As I read the song titles I half expected the players/singers whom we know and love and remember covering them to be on these covers. Guess not, so enjoy what it is, cuz we won't always have old Les to play around with.

1 out of 5 stars Where's Les?.......2007-02-02

Not enough of Les... I've been a fan of his for 40 years. He deserves a better tribute album than this! It would be nice if it were all people who played the guitar with his namesake during their careers also!! The one nice thing was Steve Miller being included. A little history I read years ago is Les taught Steve to play the guitar!! COOL!! If I remember correctly, Steve Miller's father worked at Capitol Records and that's how Steve got connected with Les. Miller being on the album is the only plus for me. I love Les's playing and just don't hear it on this album. Like other's have said, I'd like to hear some of his shows from his gig every Monday night in NYC. You want to really here Les?? Go find some old 78's like I did when I was a teenager!!
Being a guitar player myself I knew who he was when I was a kid. I didn't appreciate him until I was in my 20's and I think he deserves more than this!! He's a national treasure at the very least!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Deserves at least 4 stars.......2006-11-16

For all you folks [reviewers] who were disappointed by this cd: LIGHTEN UP! The album is simply not what you hoped/expected it might be. The presentation as "Les Paul and Friends" was misleading as the music does not focus on the guitar playing of Les in a polite easy going way. Instead what you get is a fresh and well recorded collection of some truly great rock and R&B. Les himself strongly approved of the result of this collaboration. Get this cd and crank it up!

1 out of 5 stars where's Jimmy?.......2006-07-23

What?? A Les Paul tribute without Jimmy Page? You must be joking! If Jimmy were in on the sessions, he would've made sure there was more Les!

1 out of 5 stars One esxpects to hear Les Paul.......2006-07-19

When one purchases a recording with Les Paul's name on it, one expects to hear Les Paul.

Except for one track, Caravan, Les Paul may as well be an indistinguishable background musician.

Shame because Caravan is brilliant. This 90 year old man has not lost his playing ability, and it would have been better off to play songs from his old trio or with Mary Ford, and having a guest vocalist, BUT NO EXTRA GUITAR PLAYERS, or have cd made similar to the recordings he made with Chet Atkins, where one can hear Paul.

The only pleasant surprise is hearing how well Neal Schon (of Journey) can play. Even Peter Frampton, a brillant player who sacrifices his guitar playing for his pop tune, is a dud on this session.

Perhaps any recordings made of Paul's current club dates will show up, as they will better represent him than this does.

Overall, the songs are good and the playing by others is very good, but it is not a Les Paul recording and, given other reviews, has deceived a number of people

Dan Zanes, lead singer of the 1980s roots-rock band the Del Fuegos, didn't need to enlist the high-profile help of pals Sheryl Crow and Suzanne Vega to produce a crowd-pleasing kids' record, but he got it anyway. On Rocket Ship Beach, where traditional tunes such as "Polly Wolly Doodle" (with Crow) and "Erie Canal" (with Vega) mingle in loosey-goosey, just-for-the-fun-of-it fashion with originals such as the plucky "All My Friends Live in the Woods" (written by Bad Company buddy Simon Kirke), Zanes exhibits the same plugged-in exuberance that gave his former band its unpredictable zing. Besides the no-amateurs instrumentation, which includes Zanes on guitar, lap steel, banjo-mandolin, and studiophone, and G.E. Smith on banjo-mandolin and guitar as part of a kickin' string band that performs the classic "King Kong Kitchie," plus a cluster of others, what stands out most about this 17-track funfest is its draw-you-in friendliness. Pitching in with the pros (who also include dancehall rapper Rankin' Don--he delivers the gruff stuff on "Father Goose" and "Sunny Side of the Street") are family friends such as the gang of West Indian babysitters turned vocal group the Sandy Girls, who give it up to impressive, get-you-boogying effect on "Emmanuel Road," and a kindergarten class that contributes, adorably, to "Sidewalks of New York." All told, this is way hipper than most kids' records and it also razzle-dazzles with its packaging--Rocket Ship Beach arrives in a chunky, colorful board-book illustrated with sweet, fantasy-fueled beachside scenes by banjo player and Zanes's brother-in-law, Donald Saaf. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

music is in the air. it's alive and it's here for everyone. if you can play an old song, you can write a new song. make it a family parade, all around the kitchen cock-a-doodle-doodle-doo. or how about a family band? on the front steps, in the back yard, in the park, on the sidewalk, in the basement. if you can brush your teeth, you can play tamborine. if you can tell a joke, you can sing.

festival five records is the sound of a neighborhood band on the front stoop playing tunes after dinner for a family dance. festival five records is the sound of a group of 9 and 10 year olds singing a sixty year old broadway song in the basement of a 150 year old row house. it's the sound of a 40-year-old dad on a blue porch singing a 400 year old story song about a frog that marries a mouse. when you feel that music in the air, try to catch as much as possible.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's great!.......2007-01-27

I'm a first-time Mom who was looking for a CD both my daughter and I could enjoy. We rec'd this CD at Christmas along with "Buzz Buzz" by Laurie Berkner. This one is my personal favorite. I think I enjoy it as much, if not more than my daughter (who is 1). The songs are addicting and I, like a previous reviewer, find myself singing/humming them even when my daughter is not around. Polly Wolly Doodle and King Kong Kitchie are fabulous! I highly recommend giving this CD a spin. I'm sure my daughter will love it even more when she gets a little older.

1 out of 5 stars Honestly, this CD sucks.......2007-01-18

I was excited to receive this CD because of its great reviews. Once I received it however, I found it barely listenable. My toddler daughter looked and me and said "Off!Off!" and we took it off the CD player after only 10 minutes.

People can make of Raffi all they want, but at least his music is tolerable!

Don't waste your money on this lemon of a CD.

5 out of 5 stars What an awesome CD!!!.......2006-12-20

My 2 year old and 1 year old think this CD ROCKS! My son will point to the CD player and cry and whine until I turn it on. From song one they both wiggle, giggle and dance all over. The songs are very folksy, upbeat, and easy to groove too. Get this CD and watch your kids get jiggy wit' it!

5 out of 5 stars rocket ship beach review.......2006-11-10

Rocket Ship Beach was my introduction to Dan Zanes. I have a new son and I was searching for some music we could both enjoy. I found this and thought I would give it a shot. The cd is wonderful. The music is addicting and I find myself driving down the road singing to myself....without my son in the car! Polly Wolly Doodle, the first track, is one of my favorites (and not because I am a Sheryl Crow fan). Another beautiful song is "Hello". This cd is upbeat, fun and yet different from some more typical childrens music. My son really enjoys the different sounds and rhythms on the cd. The cd has a few little introductions where you can hear children, a phone ringing, ect. This cd is sure to put you in a good mood. I highly recommend it! I am actually waiting for another Dan Zanes cd to arrive I liked it so much.

5 out of 5 stars we all love it.......2006-08-05

The whole family can enjoy this music, unlike many of the other kid's music that is so lame.
