Bay Area MC Charizma and his crate-diggin' pal Peanut Butter Wolf entered the game in rap's blissful Golden Age. Due to label drama and Charizma's tragic 1993 passing, most of their work was vaulted - until now. Big Shots unveils classic one-two sonic jabs from a duo whose affinity for hip-hop should make Common proud. The tracks are unearthed in time-capsule fashion (nothing much altered) with 15 first-class jams serving as an ideal early-'90s hip-hop snapshot. Most of the innocent-sounding tunes like "Devotion" and "Fair Weathered Friend" boast Wolf's static-stamped production and Charizma's lighthearted vocab. Sure, joints like the simplistic love letter "Talk About a Girl" and its familiar drum-machine thumps and piano loops might not make a peep if they were freshly recorded songs, but as reminiscing material goes, Big Shots is a golden ticket to when it was all so simple.

Everything that is right and pure in Hip-Hop. Ice Cream Truck is so ill and real, listen closely to all the lines. If you live in a neighborhood with an ice cream truck/man you can't help but smile "ask mom dukes for loot, okay they have Push-Ups but you don't have to push up" "just like in my hood, in the truck there's always something good" "it's here, it's there, it's everywhere making papes, bumpin the same ol' ice cream truck tape" R.I.P. Real Good Hip-Hop.......2006-06-27

I recently bought this album on vinyl at a record store about a month ago.. all I have to say is that I really like it. I think probably my favorite track on here is "Fair Weathered Friend" but I also like "Devotion" and "Methods" quite a bit.. and "Red Light, Green Light" isn't bad either.. overall it's a good hip-hop record.. so if your looking for some quality hip-hop I would recommend you checking this record out..

Charizma was probably one of the finest MC's hip-hop tried to offer to the world that was so close to rise.

This sorta of thing that Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf had that they had the largest potential to rise and just got pushed down heavily by tragedy of death and irony reminds me of K.M.D. stood with Subroc (RIP) & Zev Love X (aka MF Doom).

Personally, all the songs are real creative. Awe-some lyrics and exciting production. One of a kind style. No skips required. I actually first saw Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf from the "Red Light, Green Light" music video, another awesome single. Also, another favorite track of mines would have to be "My World Premiere", one real smash hit.

Charizma had alot coming and I'm sure he's had to inspire MC's with such skills at young age. RIP.

this album is a classic example of what you get when you put a creative beat conductor together with a lyrical genius. Charizma had the passion and skill level to be one of the all time greatest but his career was tragically cut short, and Peanut Butter Wolf is (or should be) recognized as a legend not only for introducing the world to Charizma and for composing incredible beats but also for following through with his passion for good music and taking it into his own hands by putting together his own record label (if you want something done right you have to do it yourself) Stones Throw Records

you may not agree but when i first heard Charizma i felt he had the skills of another underground legend that had his career cut way too short, Lamont Coleman. i felt the same intensity that he had in his voice, the same love for the music that he had when he laid vocals. when its all said and done their styles dont match but their impression did (on me)

This CD is great!.......1999-05-09

I have never really been a huge fan of swing music, but after reading the previous review about it.. I was curious. Let me say that I was not disappointed! This is such a fun, entertaining CD.. it captures the total essence of swing. The best tracks are "big shot" and "julie chimelowski" which are not only musically wonderful, but entirely hilarious. Kirk Wall, especially, stands out on this recording as an amazing singer with the perfect velvet voice. The band backs him up perfectly and the whole thing put together make for a really great time! TRY IT

Johnny and the Big Shots Swings a great album.......1999-03-26

For a relatively unknown swing band, Johnny and the Big Shots with lead singer Kirk Wall have been wowing local audiences for quite some time. The group's first effort CD is astounding and amazing. The total musicians' total understanding of swing music is evident and pleasurable at all moments. The tunes are catchy, fun, and energetic. I challenge anyone out there to order this CD and not start dancing!! Wall's smooth, georgous voice and the band's zest and jive will send you reeling!
