A Seattle band missed.......2007-03-09

The first song I heard by this group was "Living Water," and I was enthralled by the acoustic honesty of the lyrics and melody. This album is great, and I'm sad that there won't be any more.

Superb musicianship, powerful lyrics, mellow music .......2006-05-17

Unfortunately, Five O' Clock People has broken up, although a few of its original members have created a new band. I was introduced to this group by a friend from the Pacific Northwest who had seen them a few times in Oregon and Washington and thought they were amazing. Would that I could have seen them in concert back then, as this album is simply excellent and has not left my iTunes recently played list in two months.

There is a moving significance to this group's lyrics, many of which reflect their Christian faith (not to be missed is an incredible hymn called "Living Water", track 11 here). But many of their songs touch on friendship, love, loneliness, and memories, themes that are universal. Moreover, their musicianship is superb; they use a wide variety of instruments, including mandolins and violins, to lend a haunting Celtic quality to many of their songs, making this album a huge step beyond the paucity of musical talent in most contemporary Christian music. Highly recommended!

Five o'Clock People is one of the most spectacular and underappreciated bands in the world today. The Nothing Venture, their sole full-length "label" release, shines with such impassioned alterna-folk tracks as Blame, Sorry, and Same Old Line. They dance between celebration and contemplation with impeccable musical integrity, making this album a truly superior work.

I was introduced to Five O'Clock People by a friend and fell in love with the band. The bands lyrics are great and there is nothing bad about the band. I would recommend the band to anyone and everyone.

i've been a big fan of these guys for the last three or so years, and im contiually amazed. i have all of five o'clock people's albums (including the very very first one)and each one has something new to offer. beginning to end, the nothing venture is full of lush sounds, excellent production, tight harmonies and strong lyrics. they have an amazing way of portraying exactly what they want people to hear. their music and lyrics match very well. i see these guys (and girl)taking music like jars of clay, burlap to cashmere and the dave matthews band a little further. all of their personalities come through in their music making a huge impact on their listeners. this is a must-have album. a true masterpiece.

Christmas Carols at there best.......2005-10-18

It does not get any better. This 2 cd set is outstanding.
As one reviewer notes the second disk has many carols not heard by most people in the USA. I heard them growing up, but most are hard to find on an album.

Christmas is not Christmas without King's College Choir singing carols.

Nice Christmas CD.......2004-01-10

In my haste for looking for some traditional and exuberant Christmas music, and in my blinding affinity for all things "King's", I purchased this cd. It is a nice compelation, although I, and I daresay many Americans, am not very familiar at all with most of the hymns/carols on the 2nd cd. Morever, I found most of the music lacking in pomp and circumstance. Of course, now, I understand that is not what this cd set is for. If you want big sound and more familiar tunes, try something else.

If you are seeking a CD of traditional Christmas music to help you 1) focus on the true meaning of the holiday and 2)draw near to God, this is it. The choral arrangements are alternately beautiful and powerful, delicate and majestic. There is a rich heritage of European carols which 99% of Americans know nothing of. Broaden your horizons with this disc. You won't regret it.

David Willcocks has produced, without question, the most elegant and dignified collection of Christmas choral music available. This CD is a masterpiece.

You need one traditional Xmas cd - this is it........1998-11-30

Yes, most of the stuff was originally recorded in the 50's and 60's and it's not going to win prizes for signal to noise ratio. However, if you, like me break out in a sweat hunting for a xmas cd which won't contain some desperate wannabe modernised rehash of carols or a "listen to me aren't I a good tenor/diva and by the way here are some carols?" tracks, then this is your album.

A Wonderful Voice From The Past.......2006-07-27

This two-disc set gives a good overview of the great Russian Bass singer. It has a total of 36 selections, and covers the years 1911 to 1936.

With a voice of tremendous range and power, Chaliapin could also sing softly and with feeling. A very flexible instrument that comes through the old recording technology of the 78 record era. A good example of the pure physical gifts of his voice is 'Farlaf's Rondo' by Glinka. A 'patter' song, with words and syllables sung rapidly and seemingly without taking a breath. As if the performance wasn't difficult enough, Chaliapin speeds up the tempo at the ending of the rondo! It shows the breath control he had, and while the singer seems to be none of the worst for wear, I was left breathless just listening!

Two selections, Boris' Monologue from 'Boris Godounov' and 'Song of The Flea', by Mussorgsky, are represented by two different performances. This gives a good idea of the breadth of Chaliapin's art, as each performance of the same work is full of nuance and artistry. It is hard for me to pick which performance I like best. As with any great artist, each time a work is performed it is not just a repitition, but a unique recreation.

The transfers naturally have much surface noise, as all are from the 78 rpm record era. I have most of these recordings on transfers to LP's and the noise is much more apparant than on the CD transfers. With older recordings such as these, any transfers and 'cleaning up' of the sound can only go so far. If too much of the noise from the originals is 'cleaned up', the recording can lose presence. Whomever engineered the transfers to CD has hit a happy middle ground. The background noise is still there, but not so annoying as on LP, while the sound of the actual music and Chaliapin's voice seems much more alive.

What I have read about Chaliapin says that he was not only a great singer, but a great actor also. The two do not always go together, for a great voice in opera can make up for a lack of acting ability. To have both talents rolled into one is rare. Contemporary accounts of Chaliapin's operatic performances comment as much on his acting as his singing. There arevideos of his film performance in Ibert's Don Quichotte, which I want to see when I have the chance.

If you're passion is the human voice, you must hear Chaliapin. It is not possible to say he or anyone else was the best. But these recordings show he was a consummate artist, and are well worth exploring.

The selections are excellent and the quality is as one would expect from this vintage recording.

I enjoy going back to hear these voices and this is the only way to understand the history

Misleading Title.......2005-05-08

If you looking for a good source on early music, then this does not fit the bill because of it's inclusion of relatively modern classical pieces. But if you are looking for a decent collection of classical music, then this is just fine. Barber's Adagio is beautifully played on this recording...

A bit jumpy.......2000-05-04

My only problem with this cd is how quickly it moves from style to style, sometimes even cutting off before the end of a song! Just when I start to really get into it song (which is easy to do--there are some great ones on this cd) it ends, and a totally different style begins. But hey, for the price, I'm not really complaining. There are some cuts on this cd that by themselves would be worth the price!

Great Music, Great Price, But, um..........1999-09-23

For those unfamiliar with too much classical music, this is an excellent buy - good pieces, good performances, with especially good vocal performances. But whoever named this album is hopefully out of a job. Early Music is held by most to be pre-Renaissance (or perhaps Renaissance) music. So why the inclusion of Bach? CPE Bach? And BARBER?! Take a pen, strike through the word "EARLY" and enjoy the CD.

Perhaps I should start by admitting a bias: Many years ago, lying on Boston's grassy Esplanade by the Charles River on warm summer nights, I learned what a symphony orchestra should sound like, with Arthur Fiedler conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra. Those concerts were free; these seven compact discs are not--not quite. But for any lover of light classical music, they are certainly one of the best buys available. The orchestra (essentially the Boston Symphony) is one of the world's greatest; the music, from Smoke Gets in Your Eyes to the Goyescas Intermezzo and Ride of the Valkyries is instantly enjoyable and permanently valuable; the conductor is at the same time genial and exacting, convinced that any music you play, no matter how frivolous, deserves the best you can give it. --Joe McLellan

Definitly one of my favorite classical CD's....has a bit of everything, and it's all extremely well played and recognizable. I never go on car trips without it with me. If you buy only one classic CD (set), THIS IS IT!
