Despite its title, director Whit Stillman's follow-up to Metropolitan and Barcelona isn't really about disco at all. It's more a story about young people coming of age, friends all a bit out of touch with the direction in which their lives are headed. So it makes sense that the songs included here--mostly disco chestnuts--are far from groundbreaking. Contributions from Alicia Bridges, Diana Ross, Chic, and Sister Sledge are safe bets that give the film its Studio 54 shadings. Eveyln "Champagne" King's "I Don't Know If It's Right" and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes' "The Love I Lost" may the lack the quirks of "Doctor's Orders" by Carol Douglas and "Let's All Chant" by the Michael Zager Band, but it still makes for a solid, fun collection of disco tunes. --Jason Verlinde

You just think you don't like disco ..........2007-08-07

Ok, well maybe you really don't and if so, this probably won't change your mind. However, do know that if you do take a chance and listen, you will have heard the best that disco has to offer. I play this compilation almost everyday at work and it really jumpstarts my day. I have heard people the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack is the quintessential disco CD. Maybe -- but that is not my argument. You really owe it to yourself to hear this one time. And if I had to pick just one track to sell you on, it would be Doctor's Orders by Carol Douglas. If that doesn't at least make you think, "Hmmmm, I need to listen to some more of this" then forget, disco is not for you in any form. In any case please let me know how you managed to keep your feet still ...

Back In The Day.......2007-05-29

The film "Last Days of Disco" opens with the Carol Douglas recording of "Doctor's Orders". I saw the film a couple of times and couldn't shake that song, so I bought this soundtrack. This really takes you back, but it's a fun trip. If you were around then (1975-1980), I don't have to tell you what a dream it was, especially if you lived in New Orleans or some other big city. As I remember it, responsibility was practically non-existent! If you are too young to remember, take it from me, the main object was pursuit of pleasure, pure and simple (well, not so pure.) Lots of disco standards on this disc ("I Love The Night Life", "More, More, More", "Got To Be Real", "Good Times", "Knock On Wood"), as well as some I didn't remember so well. And I must mention that Miss Ross is represented by "I'm Coming Out". So, if you want to go back to that fabled time, here's a pretty good place to start your journey.

MOST COMPLETE DISCO COLLECTION.......2004-07-28

This is the most complete disco compilation that I've ever found. It's got just about everything to get your disco collection jumpstarted. Great for playing at parties-you can play it all the way through without having to skip through any tracks. The thing I like best about this album was that the song, Let's All Chant was on it-very rare to have that song on an album of this caliber. Buy it-trust me-you'll love it.

The Cincinnati Pop with Eric Kunzel are unbeatable recordings. Every minute is more beautiful and inspiring to the next. If you love Pops music, this is the begin all, end all.

Novelist Cormac McCarthy's literary vision of the wild west is given wide-screen treatment by maverick director Billy Bob Thornton and a cast that includes Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, and Bruce Dern. Professional country music journeyman Marty Stuart has performed with father-in-law Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, in addition to a successful solo career. In his soundtrack scoring debut, he provides short, meditative instrumental pieces that are subtly explosive--rife as they are with strains of old-school country and bluegrass. Cinematic strings and orchestral percussion add a welcome menacing edge, augmenting the rustic approach without crossing over into a compromised "countrypolitan" sound. If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. This is a must buy for fans of western soundtracks.It mixes beautifully symphonic music with Guitar music and spices it up all together with a south of the border flavor. Haunting music that will make you want to never take it out of your cd changer. It also
Features two vocal pieces, the first a spanish song sung by the very talented Raul Malo of the country group the mavericks, the second song is a beautiful ballad sung by Marty Stuart. Though I never owned any cd's of Marty Stuart he earns my respect with composing this film score.(cowboy hats off to you Mr.Stuart)

Truly Incredible.......2003-03-12

This album is a masterpiece. Within the first strums of the guitar, you feel as though you are among the southwestern hills. It has immediately become one of my favorites of all-time. The songs are filled with beautiful imagery, enchanting tunes, and haunting melodies. The shortness of the songs in unnoticable, as each song blends into the next, and the album itself serves as one epic journey. It is not meant to be listened to a song at a time, but as a whole. As I said, it is truly incredible. I would recommend it to absolutely anyone.

Foundation of Greatness.......2007-06-20

After their first 2 albums, both of which i love, many of the groups original memebers weren't satisfied with were the group was & left. Maurice & Verdine had to start from scratch which led to the inclusion of Ronald Laws, Roland Bautista, Jessica Cleaves & more importantly Philip Bailey, Larry Dunn & Ralph Johnson. The latter 3 along with the White brothers would form the foundation of what was to become the greatest band ever! This album gives you a glimpse of the future greatness, it's funky, raw & full of energy. Great vocals, slamming bass & drums, funky guitar & outstanding horns all trademarks of the elements. For EWF fans, this album represents the beinning of a wonderful journey & i for one have enjoyed the ride!

First and Favorite, still........2007-04-08

This album was my introduction to the music of EWF, it remains my very favorite. This is as much for the nostalgia it brings back as for the music.

The music is not an afterthought though. This is marvelous music. Maurice White's vision and the band's sound was never better than this document.

A must own for any EWF fan.

A sign of bigger things to come from this group.......2006-04-08

I went to a concert at the University of MD (in the mid 70s) to see EWF, Mandrill, and Stevie Wonder- the bands played in that order.
EWF, while starting the concert first, stole the show, playing "Power," "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," "Mom," to name a few- all from the Last Days and Time album. I've been a solid fan ever since! They still put on a great show. For the serious EWF fans, "Last Days and Time' is an absolute MUST to have in your collection! This is one of my favorite EWF recordings still!

Memories.......2006-02-25

I remember this CD(ablum in my day)from my college days (71-75) and it's just as good as i remember. Murice and the gang (female singer then)are in top form, and the songs are great. I think this was their breakthrough ablum and it was just an indication of things to come.

The Beginning of the Columbia Years.......2005-12-16

Well, let me first say that I love EWF, but I think I'm that rare fan who actually has a preference for the early stuff [the Joe Wissert and Charles Stepney produced material on WB and Columbia] as opposed to their most successful material from the latter part of the '70s. Why? Because it's "RAWER."

This album is the first Columbia album by what was the NEW, post-Warner Bros. EWF. It was both Philip Bailey's and Jessica Cleaves' debut...along with Ralph Johnson and Larry Dunn, and also featured a couple of guys who would depart after this album (saxophonist Ronnie Laws took guitarist Roland Bautista with him; Bautista came back in the '80s). It's definitely a transitional album as the band still sounds more like the WB-version of the band than the band that became the standard-bearer in black music by the end of the '70s. That's fine with me, though.

Most of the songs are solid if not spectacular, showcasing a band in search of its identity...funky but still heavily influenced by flower power...a few rough edges here and there. If for no other reason, though, fans will want to check out the studio versions of "Remember the Children" and especially "Power". These are a couple funky, guitar driven songs that show just how much of an influence Jimi Hendrix was on black music (that's another subject, though). Roland Bautista was by far the loudest and rauchiest of all of EWF's guitarits, and these two songs are his biggest contributions to the EWF legacy.

"Power" is the centerpiece of the album, featuring 5 different sections--a kalimba intro; the main theme featuring the sax (the part that most fans are familiar with); the center section featuring the wildest guitar solo on ANY EWF album; a quiet section featuring Larry Dunn's Rhodes and Ronnie Laws' flutes; and the final restatement of the theme featuring a wild clavinet solo by Larry Dunn (followed by a kalimba outro).

As you might be able to tell, this is my favorite song on the ablum and my favorite EWF piece of all time. It shows that these guys were first rate musicians. Yeah, there were more instrumental pieces on later albums (like "Zanzibar", "Africano", "Biyo", and so forth), but "Power" is the crown jewel. It showed they could go toe-to-toe instrumentally with bands like Santana, Mandrill, and early Funkadelic.

For the record, though, I recommend the album for SERIOUS EWF fans. If you're one of those casual listeners who only knows songs like "September", "Boogie Wonderland", "Let's Groove", and "After the Love Has Gone", well...you might be turned off.

Beginning with an image of cosmic apocalypse and ending with a cosmic joke about going nowhere (yet always having somewhere else to be), Brett and Rennie Sparks use their first album in three years, and their most beautiful and accessible since Through the Trees, to explore the magical and disturbing intersections between the human, natural, and spiritual worlds. Recorded at home in Albuquerque, the album unfolds like a country-folk operetta (mostly composed by Rennie) set in idyllic and mysterious locales: haunted suburbia, peaceful but slightly malevolent strip malls, confession-inspiring bowling alleys, and lovesick airports. When they move to the exotic location of a shipwrecked island on "After We Shot the Grizzly," they borrow from Bob Dylan's cryptic "Isis," and make the random, mythic violence their own. Small moments of ennui, whether feeding pigeons in New York or watching kids paint graffiti, reveal unpredictable and unsettling dreams, and the delicate Americana instrumentation only sounds quaint on the surface. French horns, droning bass notes, clippity-clop drums, pedal steel (from Stephen Dorocke of Freakwater), and musical saw (from David Coulter, who has worked with Tom Waits) give even the most macabre songs--not to mention Brett Sparks' Johnny-Cash-on-Thorazine vocals--a light, playful air of discovery and wonder. --Roy Kasten

The Handsome Family is very interesting group. They are a husband and wife team who sing murder ballads. I have never seen them play. But I did an interview with them a few years ago. They seemed like a very bitter crowd. If you take a little punk-punk, and throw in a fascination with Nick Cave, and a conversion to Americana, you get to the Handsome Family. When I was talking to them on the phone I felt that I was talking to myself ten years ago. I was really pissed off. I was in training to become a serial killer. I guess that I moved to New York City and joined the rat race. A bunch of good and bad things have happened, and I am all the better for it. If I were still the old me, and time did stop, I would be probably making music like this. But Handsome Family has moved on with this album. There are the same Americana obsessions. Now they have songs about Nicola Tesla. "These Golden Jewels" is like a Tom Waits song. Most of the album is like some southern novel. I was listening to this Ralph Stanley CD recently. Handsome Family is like that except with the references to God. This is a whole album without any murder ballads or even a body count. The Handsome Family has grown up.

More wonder !.......2006-07-23

I wonder how they do it,I am just glad they keep doing it.That dynamic duo have given us yet another gift,I don't know how they keep doing it, but they keep expressing the inexpressible, that world that lies just out of our reach, but which we glimpse in moments of illumination.The Handsome Family write about our world, they use our words, they use instruments,and the same musical notes that are over the radio all day, but they make it all shine, to paraphrase T.H.White, they are some of what we all are, just drops in the great sunlight sea, but some of those drops sparkle.

Are the Handsome Family perfect?.......2006-06-20

A month ago I had heard of the Handsome Family but never heard them. Now that I have please forgive the following hyperbole, it is the ardour felt for a new love.

Their new album Last Days of Wonder does just what it says on the tin. It asks in a cycle of songs varying from ones that could have been sung in Elizabeth the First's court (Hunter Green) to scary, but funny tunes that will be sung and strummed, no doubt, for years to come around the campfire (After We Shot the Grizzly) to waltzes (Telsa's Hotel Room). But taken as a whole they are asking is science about to remove all sense of wonder from our world, and are we happy about that? This is a profound question but it is asked in a round about way that approaches through the cumulative effect of learning these wonderful songs and not dry and dusty like Philosophy 101. They are asking you to clap your hands if you believe in fairies or magic or have ever felt awe; otherwise all that will be left is the whirl of machines and digital analysis.

And with the incredible song writing team of Brett and Rennie Sparks producing such tunes you are going to be clapping your hands a lot - lovely stories to make you laugh and shiver, they possess so much `back story' that you can pack your bags and spend your vacation in there.

But back to my first question - are they perfect? Well, no. They have tended their very unique garden well but sometimes listening to these exquisite melodies I wish that a superstar producer might have been at the helm, a Daniel Lanois or Rick Rubin (but oh no not Eno) to really get them to take wing fully and reach the stratosphere, but it is hard to believe that such genius songwriters haven't had the opportunity to take that path but have commendably chosen not to. Also, although it says nowhere on their job description that they are here to rock you, it would be nice for a little more punch being applied occasionally. But even here they supply a few toe tapping numbers Bob Wills the King of Texas Swing wouldn't have minded attaching his name to such as `Bowling Alley Bar' and `All the Time in Airport', which with a slight upping of the amperage could easily fit into the repertory of Altcountry Rebel Steve Earle.

So, you are lucky - this near perfect fruit is hanging right within your grasp - pluck it and let it into your life. You won't regret it, and while you are at it, if you are new to this marvel, take a leap of faith and get one or two of their back catalogue while you're at it. I would recommend the equally brilliant predecessor Singing Bones. If my search through the record shops of this market town in England's West country is indicative of the bleak distribution opportunities of minor labels major talent, Amazon is going to be the smartest way to go, and I promise after hearing this great CD you are going to want to hear more of the Handsome Family.

Slightly different, but good........2006-06-14

This album marks a change in the Handsome Family canon. Continuing with the slower-paced tradition of their last album, "Singing Bones," this album finds Brett and Rennie Sparks delving into a varitey of topics that somewhat differ from their usual tales of darker fare. Rennie's economical but effective writing shines as bright as ever in the lyrical department, while Brett's songwriting continues to mature and blossom. While the first two tracks start out slowly, one, of the ensuing tracks has an almost Tom Waits feel, while another track features distorted guitar and a moog synth. In another band's hands, these differences could seem jarring, but the Handsome Family does so with ease, making the production changes feel natural and evenly placed. This is another stellar album in a long line of fine work from this under-appreciated group.

Great movie, cool soundtrack.......2007-05-02

I enjoy the CD set very much. Santana's performance of "In a Silent Way" by Miles Davis is worth the price of admission right there. This version goes into my all time favorite tracks list - the young Neil Schon is spactacular. Honorable mentions go to Elvin Bishop, the later day Quicksilver, and critically important, Bill himself. My question is, where is the DVD? I saw it on cable televsion several years ago and before that about twenty years ago in a theater. There is likely some legal BS with the estate preventing the release. Please get past it and make this available - that is the real time piece.

More than mere nostalgia..........2005-04-18

although flashbacks aplenty are there to enjoy for anyone who once felt the rumble of those stacks of marshal and custom amps all those many long years ago. i once told jerry garcia that all of their (the ded's) songs sound alike to me and he grinned real big&said, "it's all the same song," so i'm not gonna complain about this anthology's scarcity of ded tunes; instead i have to applaud its inclusion of precious rarities like hot tuna and elvin bishop.

Live recordings are something i habitually eschew, and rare are productions for which i make excceptions; the clarity of sound quality throughout all of the recordings here is superlative!

this collection is bill graham's crown of glory, and the brightest gem has got to be the live and extended version of white bird by it's a beautiful day. having awaited the re-release of that group's original recording on ceedee for so many moons, those who remember the summer of love are sure to agree that the virtuoso rendition reverberating through that palacial sanctuary of rock culture surely transccentds the studio version everryone is so familiar with and enraptured by.

buy it - or, better yet, come on over to the olde cult compound and listen to it here!

Days Gone By.......2004-01-30

I bought this years ago on vinyl, and I still have it. The LP came with an authentic poster and ticket, an informative booklet which included some great photos and a listing (by date) of every show that ever played the Fillmore, and a bonus 7" 33-1/3 rpm "Words With Bill Graham" disc. The CD reissue, of course, doesn't give you the poster nor ticket, nor the extensive booklet, but the interview is included. Musically, this album is excellent. Some performances may be marginally better than others, but many are brilliant, and all were chosen by the artists themselves. The recording quality is amazingly good, especially when compared to many other live recordings of the period. What's also cool is that the album presents a number of very talented artists who were somewhat obscure at the time and almost unknown today-- but who deserve not to be forgotten. Alongside of those are great performances by bands and artists who went on to become legends. The incredible version of "Baby's Callin' Me Home" by Boz Scaggs is alone worth the cost of the set. The Dead's cover of "Johnny B. Goode" that appears here is the best I've yet heard-- far superior, to my ears, to the already great version that appears on "Skull & Roses". In addition are great performances by Quicksilver, The Sons, Santana, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Cold Blood, Tower of Power-- the list goes on. The "Final Night Jam" that closes out the set (with Taj Mahal, Boz Scaggs, Elvin Bishop and a host of others not even credited) is way cool. It all ends with "Greensleeves", often played at the end of the night, amid the sounds of the audience leaving the auditorium for the last time. Very poignant, indeed. Some may pan this album for various reasons, including the very inclusion of some of those more obscure artists. But I think they are missing the point. This is a documentation of a moment in time and history. And I for one would not want to be without it.

Need to Get the Record Set.......2003-08-26

I would buy the record set if you can find it-its out of print. I was there at the Fillmore during these shows and at numerous other Fillmore West and Fillmore Auditorium shows from 1967 to closing in 1971- $3 a show and you get a poster. 3 bands-two sets each -shows usually ended at 2:30Am The record set has a poster, an actual ticket which you could not keep at the shows, and an outstanding booklet listing many pictures and all the shows at the Fillmore and Fillmore West---But if you cannot find the record set-get this at least!!!! I was there and I have never seen anything like the Fillmore since then-I have been to the Fillmore several times in the past 10 years-but it is not like the original times-good but not the sixties.

True to the Filmore sound and experience!.......2003-03-20

I was there for two of the last four days of Filmore West and this set carries on the experience that existed. It will bring back memories for anyone attending any of Fillore West shows including the 'apple barrel' and the free posters and poster cards handed out. The record set gives you a cool poster which isn't included with the CD set but it's well worth the cost! I was a Quicksilver, Cold Blood, and Tower of Power fan which certainly was covered on this CD. If you are an old hippie you will enjoy it too!

Last Days of the Century - Al Stewart's Y2K.......2006-06-23

Al produced this work in the 1980's. It is a "different" album. Al was bringing out the swift rock here. In retrospect, it is a lesser known and appreciated work than material produced in later years. At the time, he was attempting to get back into the limelight of rock stations who had ceased playing his stuff after the phenomenal "Year of the Cat" in '76. There are some cuts that remind you of the old Al, "King of Portugal" for example. But "Last Days of the Century" was an attempt to put him back in the top 40. My favorite, "He's fresh out of Law school...he's got a license to steal" should have been used as background music for "The Firm" or put somewhere in a Gordon Gekko speech in "Wall Street". As time has gone by, Al has produced two excellent albums since this one, "Between the Wars" and "Beach Full of Shells", also one good piano album "Down in the Cellar". So this work will probably fall to a lower rung with "Russians and Americans" from '84. At least he survived and continued to plug away. It paid off! Songs from this album are almost NEVER sung at any of Al's concerts. I think because they require too many other instruments. I don't recommend this work for people who like Al's casual style. It was designed to be different and it may shock the uninitiated, especially if this was the only work of Mr. Stewart that they ever heard. (that WOULD be a crime!)

Dated Production Paired With Substandard Stewart Songwriting.......2006-05-15

Being a Stewart fan, I honestly wished I liked this album more than I ultimately do do, but when you get right down to it I just don't get it. The slick, synth heavy 80's production simply sounds painfully dated nearly 20 years later (and, quite frankly, was already rapidly falling out of vogue when this album was first released). That, in and of itself, might not be such a huge problem but it becomes one once it is paired wiht what sounds suspiciously like Stewart's song writing fatigue. None of the songs here come close to the masterful songs on previous albums, and none come close to the masterful songs that would follow on such Albums as "Famous Last Words," "Between the Wars," and his most recent album "A Beach Full of Shells." Each of those albums are essential for anyone interested in exploring Stewart's work beyond his pair of late 70's megahits "Year of the Cat," and "Time Passages."

This is not to say things are a total loss. "Antarctica" captures a memorable melody and pairs it with an intriguing metaphor (both of which manage to trump the flute part which, given its consistency in the song, can sometimes be mite annoying), "King of Portugal" is solid enough to overcome its quasi dance floor arrangement and "Red Toupee," which clearly a lightweight throwaway is catchy enough to qualify as a guilty pleasure. Still, interestingly enough, the albums best and most memorable track is "Where Are They Now." It stands out here for two reasons -- it is a first rate song and it's simpler arrangements and lower key production remind one of the style that Stewart does best.

Big-time sleeper.......2006-05-05

I am a guitarist and this album rates among my all-time favs. Not only did I get turned on to guitarist Peter White, years before his first solo release, but discovered one of the most clever of wordsmiths in Al Stewart.
Although, after discovering who played the majority of guitar on the project, I have purchased several of Peter's albums, this is the only Al Stewart album I have ever purchased; not too crazy about Year of the Cat or most of his other works either, but the combination of musicians and songwriting on Last Days of the Century is exceptional - like an off-the-menu entre at a small Italian restaurant that nobody else can hold a candle to.
I will be listening to this now and again for the rest of my life.

GOOD ARTISTIC '80 MUSIC........2006-02-18

I first heard "King of Portugal" back around late 1988 on WLER broadcasted from Butler, Pennsylvania on the car radio and can actually remember the street I was on at night when I heard it. It was never played on a top 40 station within a metropolitan area. I never knew the name of the song only that "king" was in it and Al Stewart sang it from a recording released around 1988 when I first heard it. So around 2000 I found out the name of the song & cd via internet cd sellers.

This recording sounds pretty good and I really wish "Ghostly Horses Of The Plain" would have been an extended 5 or 6 minute song. There is a problem with the numbering of the songs on this cd. As far as being over-produced, I think more synthesizers could have been added and it would have suited me just fine. In one of the songs the beginning sounds just like the beginning of a Simple Minds' song.

Al Stewart has a nice soft voice which is especially good in this day & age were raunchy "roots rock" singing prevails.

I don't like "Real & Unreal" because of the jazzy horn used in it.

"Red Toupee" is a good pop song as is "King Of Portugal."

I LOVE the first seconds of "Antarctica".

This is a good cd to listen to while drinking herbal teas or traveling in the national forests.

Lackluster songwriting from a brilliant songwriter.......2005-07-27

This CD is the weakest of the 11 Al Stewart albums I have on CD. Most of the songs are melodically uninteresting, and not up to his usual level of lyrics. Of the many historical topics covered in his songs, Stewart is normally at his best writing about the years around the First World War. Fields of France is a genuine disappointment, both lyrically and melodically. Perhaps it's the insipid, synthesizer-heavy arrangements, but Stewart's band, which includes the very talented guitarist Tim Renwick, a mainstay on earlier Stewart releases, sounds uninspired. Peter White's spanish guitar solos are an ill-fitted attempt to replicate what he has done so well on other Stewart albums. On a positive note, the album finishes with its best material, Antartica, an instrumental called Ghostly Horses of the Plain, and the album's only truly good song, Helen and Cassandra. This CD is for those (like myself) who would like to own Stewart's enire discography.

Maybe Ice-T was trying hard to infuriate and offend when he put together Body Count's Violent Demise: The Last Days, but he should have spent a bit more time on the riffs and lyrics. Sure, "Interview," which features a vignette about a journalist being executed for dissing the band (gulp!), and "Strippers," which includes the scintillating chorus "Strippers, I want my dick sucked," are both disturbing, but the puerile prurience hardly obscures the group's second-rate songwriting. Throughout the album, Ice-T moans and barks above repetitive, second-hand guitar lines, and even when the rapper lambastes O.J. Simpson on "I Used to Love Her," he fails to say anything even mildly thought-provoking. --Jon Wiederhorn

Rap Metal fans this is your CD.......2002-01-15

This CD is absolutely off the hook! Heavy,Soft,Funny, Intelligent, and absolutely HARDCORE. There some incredible guitar riffs on this CD,kinda Rage Against the Machine sounding but they add a little speed metal too. I just love blasting the songs in my car down the highway. If the lyrics weren't so explicit, Body Count would be a regular on radio stations, but Ice-T keeps it real. He doesn't compromise his art for a cheap buck. If you are a rap metal fan don't miss out on this CD.
