Do you want in on hip-hop's dirty little secret? Well, not even rap's greatest icons have been able to pull of a memorable, fast-forward-free double disc--2Pac's All Eyez on Me and Wu Tang Clan's Wu-Tang Forever included. On this follow-up to part one, Jay teams up with Destiny's Child's Beyoncé on "03 Bonnie & Clyde," a so-so remake of 2Pac's "Me and My Girlfriend." The Dr. Dre-produced remix to "The Watcher," featuring Rakim, reveals that, in addition to expanding his audience, Jay is interested in appealing to his tried-and-tested demographic--East Coast hardrocks. He rounds out the first disc with "I Did It My Way," sampling Paul Anka's version of "My Way" and equating his Rap Pack (Kareem Burke, Dame Dash) to the Rat Pack of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Dean Martin. Don't laugh. The stronger second disc contains some pleasant surprises. The Lenny Kravitz-fuelled braggadocio of "Guns and Roses" titillates, while Jay's Jeru the Damaja-like "Bitches and Sisters" is sure to stir up accusations of misogyny. "Many years from now" must have seemed like an understatement to 16-year-old Paul McCartney, wondering if he'd still be needed or fed at the age of 64. As it turned out, all doubt as to the latter had ceased by his 22nd birthday (though few could have predicted he'd end up washing down those meals with the liquid pride of Seattle). As to the former? Now that McCartney, as of the date of this album's release, has reached that mythic age, his greatest work is 40 years behind him, his solo peak over 30 years gone. Does the world need a new Paul McCartney album? The answer is yes, at least as much as it needs anything else that passes for music these days. With Memory Almost Full, Macca is back. No, it's not Ram or Band on the Run. It might not even be Flowers in the Dirt--in 1989, he had a full band, the support of Linda, and Elvis Costello as a collaborator. Here, he's on his own. Literally: on the majority of the tracks, everything but the strings is multi-instrumentalist Paul. But the surprise is that it's one of his freest, loosest affairs in years, sonically reminiscent of the Tug of War/Pipes of Peace era with nods to Abbey Road in the album-closing medley, McCartney's gravelly tones on "Gratitude," and 2007's version of "Her Majesty," the palate-cleansing "Nod Your Head." It's a surprise because of the album's inescapable sense of retrospection ("Ever Present Past," "Vintage Clothes," "That Was Me") and even a bit of weariness. The next-to-last song is "The End of the End," after all, in which McCartney tells us about what he'd like to happen "on the day that I die." (He wants "songs that were sung/to be hung out like blankets/that lovers have played on/and laid on while listening to songs that were sung," and will likely get his wish.) But it never gets overwhelming, for McCartney mostly resists his tendency to get plodding and maudlin. In fact, Memory Almost Full must be the most sanguine album made during the dissolution of a marriage since...well, ever. "What went out is coming back," he sings in "Vintage Clothes," and from the sound of things, that may not be just wishful thinking. What's past is prologue; if we're lucky, what to come may be McCartney's late renaissance. --Benjamin Lukoff

Finally some life out of Paul......I was a fan of The Beatles and Wings. Sounding as close to Wings on a few songs as he ever has solo. Would sure like to see a reunion with the remaining members since I now know Paul can still kick it!

"Memory Almost Full" isn't going to make you a McCartney fan if you aren't one already, and once the novelty of the CD wears off it won't sound nearly as strong as the rave reviews suggested. This isn't a bad CD at all - my expectations were low and I was definitely pleasantly surprised by how good parts of this collection are. The first third of the CD is actually stronger than most of what McCartney's put out on his high-profile releases for the last 10 years.

"Dance Tonight" is a charming mandolin-driven opener that leads into a handful of other strong songs. These early songs remind me a lot of the spirit of McCartney's best work with Wings in that he seems hellbent to create brand-new music without aping his earlier Lennon-McCartney songbook. These songs are full of catchy hooks and are crisply played and sung. It's almost as if participating in the "Love" Vegas show has purged McCartney of his retroactive Beatles nostalgia.

The CD then stumbles and never fully recovers. It isn't bad by any means, but it's forgettable. At his best, McCartney projects a friendly, avuncular vibe and this CD is full of that feeling. McCartney also sounds more committed here than on his last few CDs. It just doesn't pack much of a punch and once you get past the first third it's forgotten as soon as it's over.

Still - I have a hunch that "Almost Full" is a prelude to an even better CD coming from McCartney in the future. Stay tuned . . .

Paul just gets better. His songs are evidence of an age of retrospection and looking forward without fear or regret. It is thought-provoking and still enjoyable for those younger listeners. I would definitely recommend it.

In spite of what some of these people write...one can have an opinion and if it differs from yours...that is all it does..it differs. I had been writing about what a wimpfest the new album sounded like it could be. I hadn't listened to it at that point..I based it purely on what few blurbs I had heard. So I deleted all of my comments
Now after listening to it in its entirety I can honestly say that I believe this is a very good album...the music far outshines his last few attempts....and I attribute that to the fact that there is apparently no woman in his life so he is not influenced the way he was by Linda and that other woman.
The lyrics can still be a bit insipid at times but the music is inventive and as a result not heavy on the pop stylings of his past...but that makes it all the more interesting.
Inventive and definitely not the old Paul...maybe that is what disappoints some people....not as many silly love songs.

This is a fabulous album of Journey's greatest hits and cannot figure out why I didn't have this album already, in my collection, because I like Steve's singing so much. When I heard it at the end of the Soprano's it brought back nice memories.

Once Steve Perry joined Journey for the "Infinity" album, the band's course was inevitably reset. They changed direction from being a progressive rock band to an arena rock juggernaut. Perry's main contribution was a strong melodic sense coupled to his more soulful vocals. The hits started almost immediately, as "Lights" and "Wheel In The Sky" became FM Rock Radio staples.

That is what this greatest hits focuses on, the songs that became the standards by which the public remembers the band. If you were interested in the albums BEFORE "Infinity," I suggest "Time 3," which adds material from the years when Neal Schon was still aping his jazz-Rock tenure with Santana and Gregg Rollie was doing standard rock keyboard boogie. Personally, I liked them better when Perry got on board. The sound focused and the songwriting tightened. Songs like "Separate Ways/Worlds Apart" and "Any Way You Want It" could add a jolt of adrenaline to a day of radio. When Jonathan Cain replaced Gregg Rollie on "Escape," Journey took on a romantic bent from Cain's songwriting. "Open Arms" came first, then "Faithfully" (on "Frontiers") solidified it. These were pop radio songs without peer, and they make Journey's "Greatest Hits" an essential document of 70's and 80's radio rock. (The updated version includes the best song from the 90's reunion "Trial by Fire," "When You Love A Woman.")

The other reason you might be looking at this is not because of Steve Perry's voice or Neal Schon's guitar heroics, but because of Tony and Carmella. It was Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" that echoed out of the final minutes of "The Sopranos" closing episode. It was funny that Tony passed over Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra for Journey and inspire a million parodies in the process. (Including Hilary Clinton...where the best moment is when she and President Bill Clinton are flipping through songs and Bill says "My money's on Smash Mouth...") Talk about cementing your place in pop culture...who could have asked for better?

This best of offers a pair of soundtrack rarities in "Only The Young" (from "Vision Quest") and "Ask The Lonely" (from "Two of a Kind"). Missing are a few crucial singles like "Suzanne," "Stone In Love" and "Walks Like A Lady." If you really want them, go for the box sets or individual CD's.

This is how you do a greatest hits collection. You put ALL of them on there. Not a mix of half greats, and half "other", then release the rest on another "greatest hits" CD.

Unfortunately, it does not include my favorite song tandem Feeling That Way/ Anytime. For that you need to buy The Infinity album. It does include some great songs, a good mix of rockers and ballads. Definitely worth the price to anyone who loves classic rock and roll or was a teen in the late '70s. But do yourself a favor and get the Infinity album too.

Navigating Van Morrison's extensive catalog since 1993 is a formidable task even diehard fans might not want to attempt. The Irish icon has flirted with blues, jazz, country, pop, Celtic, and his own style of indescribable into-the-mystic spiritually-oriented poetic folk on his numerous releases, making for quite a thorny culling assignment. So the EMI brass were probably ecstatic when the singer took the job himself. He weeds through a dozen or so albums released since Volume 2's mile-marker, and adds a clutch of previously unavailable mixes, rarities, and live tracks. I have been a VM fan for years and listen to all of his music. This is the best of his three best of volumes because of the previously unreleased material and somewhat unknown duets with Tom Jones, James Hunter, Bobby Bland, Ray Charles, Carl Perkins, and BB King. It has something for the diehard VM fan as well as the occasional listener.

You either love or hate Van the Man. Over 40 years he has given the world some of the most heartfelt beautiful music ever recorded. This best of provides a stunning glimpse into the breath and depth of what he is capable of delivering. Showing respect to those who came before him, this collection is absolutely outstanding from start to finish. In the hands of the recording company this offering could have been a diaster. I was excited to hear that Van had out a new album. I've been a huge fan since the 70's.(that's dating myself, isn't it). This album is a nice mix of music and includes some duets with other artists. I'd like to see some brand new music from Van, but this one is great.

I won't call this definitive, but the collection's got some previously unreleased and seldom heard numbers that merit the price and hype. This is a very listenable CD that's something you can just stick in the changer and let it play. Definitely worth the money.

This packed double-disc is the slim option for fans who find the Eagles' vaunted greatest hits sets too little and the boxed set too hefty. Hit singles large and medium are here, often ("One of These Nights," "Hotel California") still sounding definitive and even tough. Large helpings of favorite album cuts are also included, along with a taster from a promised 2004 Eagles studio reunion. Unfortunately, "Hole in the World," Don Henley's response to September 11, feels just as empty and entitled as "Get Over It," the band's previous state-of-the-union message (from which the newer song represents a philosophical 180-degree turn). But for those seeking an overview of this Southern California juggernaut's successes, as well as telling comments from band members--mostly Henley and Frey--in a well-designed booklet, Very Best will more than do. --Rickey Wright

I'm going to rate this CD based on a $1 per song cost to total cost for the entire CD (Apple and Rhapsody charge $1 per song).
The Eagles are great. Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh. I'm sure glad Hell froze over for them. Not that their recordings as the Eagles have been any good since then, but at least we might get a chance to see them live in concert.
This CD is the 'Greatest Hits' I've been waiting for. No longer do you have to buy their 'Greatest Hits - 1971 to 1975' for $14 and also their 'Greatest Hits - Vol. 2' for $15, in order to get all of their best work. There are $16 worth of great songs on here, but it will cost you $20 for the CD on Amazon. The songs are: CD 1: Tracks 1,2,3,4,7,8,13,14,15 & 17; CD 2: Tracks 1,3,5,7,9 & 10.
Better yet, all of the songs I've listed are available on iTunes. So buy each of the 16 songs individually on iTunes and save yourself $4.

Twenty hits from the Eagles make's sure you get your moneys worth. "Hotel California" & "Best of My Love" are my two faves, but I love them all. California rock and roll, gotta love it. I know this desperado type witchy woman does as she sips her tequila sunrise just before she takes it to the limit.

Confession time. I never grew up with the Eagles. Until I watched the live reunion DVD at a high end home audio shop, I only knew the names and some of the songs.

This is a darned good album that spans The Eagles portfolio of songs. The live album has a more refined sound due to age and experience of the band members BUT, this is a benchmark hits album of the original recordings.

I will never get used to another Eagle's greatest hits album since that original one came out in early '76 since I got very accustomed to the perfect order in which those songs are played. I noticed that this newer version did not leave "Best Of My Love" as an ending song to the CD as it was on Greatest Hits 71-75 and on it's original album from '74 entitled: "The Border". In the case of "The Very Best Of the Eagles",they had 2 chances to put "Best Of My Love" at the end of a CD. Just like they had 6 chances on three different Journey compilations CDs to keep "Open Arms" an ending song to a CD as it was on 1981's "Escape". I guess I'm referring to the producers and or record company etc. After I bought the original "Eagle's Greatest Hits" that came out in early '76 (with it's perfect song list & sequence), all I ended up having to do was to buy two more studio albums ("Hotel California" and "The Long Run") and I had all the songs I needed. Now I have two DCC gold editions (Eagles Greatest Hits 71-75 and Hotel California) So, I've got 95 percent of their best stuff now. But for all of you that just want some Eagles songs and are not accustomed to the perfect order of the songs found on the original greatest hits CD (heard lots during our Bicentennial Year), you will probably be pleased with this CD set and with the songs that are included on it. I wouldn't blame you if you wanted it in fact as a career spanning CD set. But I'll personally never give up that perfect ordered original '76 edition of greatest hits for purposes of listening to straight through from start to finish.

In 1987, RCA released a one-disc Elvis compilation called The Number One Hits that featured 18 tracks. So how did the label come up with 12 additional number ones (13 if you count the sensational "A Little Less Conversation" remix that brings the King into the 21st century as a bona fide dance/electronica star)? Well, the '87 compilation featured only Billboard number ones. "In the Ghetto" and "Burning Love" never reached the top there, nor did "Way Down," despite every copy of that 45 selling out on both sides of the Atlantic following Presley's 1977 death. Instead, the new compilers have used the major pop charts in both the U.S. (including Cashbox) and U.K. to determine inclusions. The tracks have all been remixed from original masters, which proves awesome at best (some of the songs have never sounded crisper if, at times, slightly antiseptic) and problematic at worst. Purists will definitely quibble. "A Fool Such As I," for instance, sounds like Elvis rerecorded his vocals. Hank Garland's great guitar solo also sounds different. It might be an alternate take. That's definitely the case with "The Wonder of You." A few lyrics are even different, meaning this isn't the same version as the original 45. Of course, none of that should matter to the youngsters who've been singing along to "Hound Dog" on the Lilo & Stitch soundtrack, or to any other newcomers. Despite the complaints, this is arguably the best single disc Elvis primer to date. Real fans will want to explore much deeper for treasures to be found, but albums like this guarantee that this is one king who will deservedly live very long, if not forever. --Bill Holdship

What an incredible collection of music. I may even be in the minority, but I thought many of the songs on the Second to None CD were just as good, and in some case better, than many of the offerings here. To put both together provides some of the greatest sounding songs ever released. Elvis was more than just a singer and performer. He is truly an American Icon. His voice and music are timeless and the grea thing about this CD, is that it opened the door for a lot of listeners who may not have been familiar with the great songs that are classics now and will remain so. I think it may be about time for "Third Times a Charm" for those other gems that fell a little short of the other classics.

This collection of Elvis' work is one of the BEST purchase values as far as content and cost go. We are part of the generation that grew up listening to him and were extremely pleased with this large selection of his hits. If you want most of the songs you are familiar with and ones that were his biggest hits, this album is the best bet for your money !!!

Carol King's album, Tapestry, is a spiritual journey through time. I used the song, You've Got a Friend, to devote to my husband during our wedding and it has always been my favorite song. It really tells the truth about life and how love from someone can get us through the difficulties of life. If You Lead I Will Follow, is a personal song from me to someone I love very much as is, I Feel the Earth Move Under My Feet. The lyrics are timeless and classic. James Taylor totally agrees with me!!!

........for a reason. This is generally considered to be one of the very greatest albums ever. It is. Carole King wrote and sang the songs of my generation. She and Carly Simon made the music that pretty much defines the baby-boomer years. There is little point in discussing individual songs...we've all felt the earth move, followed her lead, and been glad that she sings of being our friend. If ever a girl was a natural woman...she is, indeed, a beautiful tapestry.

The sound and the songs remain fresh and new, and the pure joy as great as ever. There are very few albums that everybody really ought to have....this one heads the list.

Anyone looking for the key to Abba's enduring appeal should look no further than "Voulez Vous" and "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" for their answer. There was an innocence to the Swedish quartet, even when they were singing about one-night stands and the invitations to them. Gold establishes that the band, while appreciated as campy, were actually multifaceted in their execution. "S.O.S." has a raw urgency in its chorus, and "Does Your Mother Know" draws its energy from classic '50s rock & roll. Likewise, you don't have to be Priscilla to swoon over "Mamma Mia" or "Dancing Queen." And when it comes to drama, those soaring vocals on "The Winner Takes It All" turn the song into a bitter anthem of every relationship that has ever fallen apart. Nothing in this life has brought me more joy that ABBA. From the first time I heard Waterloo, until the fanatic state began with Fernando, they have had my heart like no other group. GOLD is the best essence of ABBA. It has the best of the best sans Summer Night City, which is on the subsequent More Gold. Their only pop rivals in sales were The Bee Gees and the enormously huge pop/disco group Boney M. Relative unknowns in the US. Check them out. Not so much Abba sounding, but if you like good melodies and irresistable hooks, great purchase. Another big, but short-lived pop group was Clout. Much more like Abba. Highly recommended.

Abba's Greatest Hits lives up to its title. This is an excellent comp album. All of the hits are here [I am just old enough to remember Abba's heyday]. This is a very good, very well-rounded collection of Abba's recordings. There's not a lame song on here. The album can be listened to straight through without ever being tempted to hit the skip button. Simply some of the best pop music ever, not just from the 70s. Abba was a bright spot of the 70s, countering a bad presidency and wicked gas prices. Hmmmm, we have those back again, come to think of it. Where's our Abba?

Abba was a pretty prolific and popular group in the 70s. For those of us familiar with ABBA, this album is great. Those who aren't might want to give this a try. You've probably heard some of their tunes before without even realizing it was ABBA. Note that there is another greatest hits collection called the Definitive Collection. It's a 2 disc set that contains everything on this album, some lesser hits and a remix or two as well. For the die hard fan you might want to check into the Definitive Collection (or the Complete Studio Collection for you ABBA freaks out there). For the passing fan like myself, all of the great stuff is here.

This compilation contains all of the biggest hits by ABBA. It starts off with a great 1-2 punch of "Dancing Queen" and "Knowing Me, Knowing You". The hits just keep on coming, "Waterloo", "Gimmie a Man After Midnight", "Voules Vouz", "Fernando", "SOS", "I Had a Dream". There are a couple songs I wish were on here like "People Need Love", "If It Wasn't for the Night" and Frida's solo hit "I Know There's Something Going On".

I cannot imagine my life as teenager in the 70s, without a reference to the Bee Gees music. These guys are great composers and surely, one of the best vocal groups of that era!
This collection has (almost) all of their greatest hits... The most romantic and even the "Disco" ones (how can you mend your broken heart, without dancing 'Stayin' Alive' once again? Come on...!!!)
I suggest you to get this one, unless you're so lucky to get that wonderful 4-CD box collection issued some years ago...

The movie is a 1970s take on 1950s musicals, providing all the kitsch anyone could hope for. It's John Travolta as Danny Zuko as Olivia Newton-John's pompadoured main squeeze, and the kids go crazy. Fresh from his astronomical success with Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, Bee Gee Barry Gibb penned the title track (sung by Frankie Valli). Sha Na Na is over-represented, and actress Stockard Channing struts her, um, versatility, singing a couple of tracks. This has become a touchstone in American culture, and so isn't likely to improve our standing in the world's eyes. Maybe the point is that it's supposed to sound amateurish, but it does manage to eke out some fun, most notably on the hit "You're the One That I Want." --Scott Wilson

The only thing holding this album back from being consistentatly a 5 star critic's favorite is the fact that it contains several weak tracks, and the title song Grease is possibly the only legitimate song that will bring back nostalgia for those that liked the movie and the singing in the musical. I always thought they were stuck in the 50s, but they've updated it to like the 70s or maybe even 90s, but still not modern enough for my tastes. The music is well crafted filler to a classic movie that will only date with time.

If you hav ever seen the movie than you already know, and if you haven't, then you need to. It is a classic American musical, with great oldies music. Highly recommeded.

Listening to the music from Grease brings back the good memories of watching the movie. The music is funny (Summer Nights; Beauty School Dropout; Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee; Greased Lighting), touching (There Are Worse Things I Could Do; Hopelessly Devoted To You) and very 70's (Blue Moon; Rock "n" Roll Is Here To Stay; Born To Hand Jive). John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John sing great, but the supporting cast (Stockard Channing, Sha-Na-Na), also contribute to a good sound. Great rock and roll!

I purchased this two-CD album as a gift for a friend who is very much into music, particularly the music of Paul Simon's era. I have not listened to it personally, but the recipient called me to say he was enjoying it immensely.

I have a lot of Paul Simon CD's so you could say I didn't really need this two CD set. However, I make a 3 hour car trip a couple of times a year and when I saw this I immediately thought how great it would be to have these two CD's in the changer in the trunk for my next road trip. Its sort of a "greatest hits" but with some songs I've never heard before as well. It covers a long span of years and my only complaint is that it does not include the incredible song "Homeless".

When it comes to music right now, there just really isn't anything that is actually exciting. While there are so many acts that just seem to get by on gloss like Beyonce', Britney Spears, and Usher, there just really isn'y anything anymore about songs and artists that just comes from the simplistic words themselves. There have been acts that have made great records, they just missed the cut when it comes to sales last year from Elton John, Rod Stewart, and Paul Simon. Although Paul has been recognized with great acheivements in music on his own, as a member of Simon & Garfunkel, he has truly made the music of our times, and this collection shows it.

The 2007 Essential Paul Simon is a double album reflection of what made Paul Simon's solo career so dynamic and universal. This was made in honor of his recent inagural Gershwin Award for Song, as well as his 35th anniverasry as a acclaimed solo artist. This collection follows in suit very nicely, and expands the effort delightfully that was made so well on his last solo hits package, 2002's On My Way. The songs here flow very nicely, and have all been remastered very well. All of his classics are highlighted here including the guilty pleasures 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover, You Can Call Me Al, The Boy In The Bubble, as well as down to Earth gems like Mother and Child Reunion, and his Oscar-nominated Father and Daughter from the Nickelodeon animated film The Wild Thornberries Movie, and his recently overlooked track Outrageous from his overshadowed 2006 album Surprise. This version also add in on the fun, by including some great music videos of his work and craftsmanship in songwriting like Diamonds On The Souls Of Her Shoes, and a rendidtion of the Simon & Garfunkel gem, Mrs. Robinson from the classic 70's The Dick Cavett Show.

All in all, The Essential Paul Simon really captures a delightful reflection on a career that has acclaimed for so many years, and also does a wonderful job at reintroducing one of the most legendary artists of the past five decades. If you haven't heard any of Paul Simon's music, than you really don't know what you've missed from a great icon like Paul. I absolutely recommend this hits collection a whole lot. You can still call him Al, but just call him a legend.

This is Paul simon cut right to the bone with no filler whatsoever! I enjoy everything on this collection and The Capeman stuff is good to finally have on cd! I compare this to the Traveling Wilbury's Collection that was recently released also w/ a DVD!! It's all very familiar but worth revisiting over and over again!
