Love It!!!!.......2007-01-09

Now what pre-teen/teenage girl during this era wasn't in love with Tevin Cambell? Despite his outcome, hands down, the boy sang some great tunes! Brought back childhood memories, played it for two months straight alongside "I'm Ready!"

My "T.E.V.I.N" review.......2006-08-08

The first time I heard a Tevin Campbell song, I know what an extraordinary talent he was. He has such a grand voice. So often, people blessed with great voices such as his have little or no control of their vocals. Not Tevin Casmpell. He has really good control of his voice and knows when to hit which note. He has an impressive debut LP. The producers (who included Al B. Sure, Qhincy Jones and Prince) did a nice job, even though many of his songs sounds dated. Usually this is a big deterent when trying to enjoy an older album, but it was not a big problem. The sound of this album actually took me back to the time it was released (1991).

"Just Ask Me To", "Lil Brother" and "She's All That" all have similar sounds: they all sound very dated. I didn't really enjoy none of these songs, they just sounded like fillers. "Confused", on the other hand, is a very nice song. I enjoyed every second of this song. I love the arrangement of the chorus, how the notes fluctuate. Vocally, this song is also wonderful. "Tell Me What You Want Me to Do" is another album highlight. This is an excellent song throughout. The production, lyrics, and naturally, the vocals, are all something to remember. Tevin lets his talent simply shine on this song. His falsettos will just make you melt. Tevin has a song on here entitled "One Song". This is another impressive number. This song is about how one song can change the world. "Round and Round" was produced by musical genius Prince. This song has the typical Prince sound. Anyone who is even remotely familiar with Prince knows that when he produces a song, people will know it simply from the sound. "Perfect World" is a cute love song. The chorus is worth mentioning; "Since I met you, it's such a perfect world..."

I really enjoyed this album. It's nice to know that you can put music like this in and be reminded of earlier times in your life.

G.R.E.A.T .......2006-04-22

Tevin and I are around the same age, and I remember listening to this tape over and over again. I particularly like Strawberry Letter 23, and Tell Me What You Want Me To Do, and One Song. It seems that everyone forgot about Tevin when Usher came along, but thats okay, I will still continue to listen to Tevin Campbell. I don't like the songs they come out with now a days. I will continue to represent the old R&B songs.

He's All That.......2005-12-13

It recently occurred to me that one reason middle aged white music fans (of which I am one, I gotta admit) don't particularly care for contemporary R&B is that it is not funky and raw the way that we understood the best black music to be back in the 60s and 70s. We admired the blues because it was raw and vital. And even if we recognized that Atlantic and Motown soul were considerably slicker, they were still direct and emotive and ultimately more powerful than almost anything else on the top 40 playlists of the era.

Somewhere along the line, R&B became a lot less about R and only vaguely connected to the B. It was as slick and as studio oriented as much of the product of contemporary white artists. Clearly it was sassier and more street smart than most of the other stuff we were hearing on the radio. But by then, we old guys had pretty much abandoned the radio anyway, and were more likely to hole up with our old Aretha or Tina albums than we were to listen to the newer artists--or for that matter to even listen to most of the newer Aretha or Tina albums.

It's very easy to become and old fuddy duddy. All you have to do is live long enough. But it's also a good exercise to at least occasionally explore music you might have otherwise ignored or abandoned. Whenever I listen to urban R&B of the past 15 years or so, I am often surprised by it. The production is slicker, the arrangements more sophisticated, and the songs more frankly sexual than what we used to call R&B. But it still works, and even if there are few divas to rival Aretha (just wait a millenium or two), the singers are much more powerful and emotive than I ever would have guessed.

Take Tevin Campbell, for example, I do recall hearing the name in the early 90s, but I don't think I was even aware that his popularity soared and then diminished precipitously as he matured. (And, yes, after reading some of the postings here, I realize that that may have had a lot to do with some personal "troubles"--some of which, in this supposedly enlightened age, should never have been so troubling.)

But anyway, what a voice! The adolescent "Tevvy Tev" of this record had a remarkable range. He opens this album with a Prince song, "Round and Round," which evokes Prince but does not slavishly imitate his phrasing. The wail that begins and ends the song sounds almost primitive, like a call to a tribal gathering. A remarkable performance for so young an artist.

And speaking of his age (14 to 15) at the time of this recording, there is a youthful buoyancy to most of these tracks that is refreshing and quite honest. For the most part, he sings as if he's 15 and not 30. A playful song like "Little Brother"--featuring singer Tyler Collins in the role of the unattainable exotic SEVENTEEN year old he's pursuing--plays off his youth in an lively, exuberant way. Tevin sounds irrepressible and just a little cocky. And that's part of his appeal throughout.

And he can just as handily take on a love-and-brotherhood Alan and Marilyn Bergman showstopper like "One Song" and imbue it with depth and meaning that many adult singers could never muster. Ideals that might sound a little schlocky expressed by a more mature singer sound just about right (and a heck of a lot less naive) when sung by a younger artist.

Like so many R&B records of the 80s and 90s, this record splits up production duties, and this time they're divvied up among some of the greats, including Quincy Jones and Narada Michael Walden. The 15 year old Tevin Campbell was indeed lucky to win the patronage of such accomplished producers. There is nothing splotchy about the album (unlike many records with multiple producers at helm at different times): it flows beautifully. About the only production touch (or was it an artist's whim?) that I would disagree with is the jokey ending to "She's All That." Cute the first time, the "Hefty Bagd full of chips" line loses its charm after the first couple of hearings, and this bit of adolescent silliness really is NOT the way to close out an album that otherwise showed great polish and maturity.

This album takes me back.......2005-05-28

I have always loved this album. The song "confused" brings me back to middle school when I was very much in a confused time. I would play this album over and over. It brings a smile to my face and tears to my eyes, I think about how far I have come from then until now. Somethings I thought I wouldn't survive, but I'm still here today. Thanks, Tevin Campbell for the contribution you made in my young life with this album. I was totally crushed on you. I loved your singing and would love to see you come back. I'm now going to order this cd from amazon so I can take a stroll down memory lane. How sweet it is!

Excellent CD...cleaver writing and arrangements. And it is very different from his most recent recording "Diamonds to Dust," which is also excellent (more poignant writing though).

Nashville Slick.......2005-02-18

If you want more Nashville slick, you'll have to go elsewhere. Gurf Morlix's "Cut & Shoot" is down home country that sets your toe tapping, warms your heart a bit, and puts a smile on your face. From the opener "Yesterday She Didn't" he takes a fairly simple lyric with a fairly simple tune and it simply works quite well, "Yesterday she didn't, today she does, what I've been dreaming became what was, now I'm in heaven & it's all because yesterday she didn't but today she does!" My favorite track "Were You Lyin' Down?" takes a similar lyrical twist & sets your toe tapping with some excellent guitar picking, "Did you leave your lipstick on his coffee cup? You got me feeling like a lonely pup. Were you lying down when you stood me up?" "Ten Years of Love" is an excellent tune with a great breakup lyric. "The Whole Truth" is another great toe tapper with an almost country-polka beat, "I got half a mind to tell the whole truth." On "I'll Change," Gurf does his Hank Williams vocal with his voice cracking into the upper range on a clunky lyric that makes it seem more heartfelt & unpretentious, "I'll change to win back your love, I'll rearrange the stars above, whatever it takes to do what I'm dreaming of." "Where There Is Smoke" written with Jim Lauderdale is another delightful midtempo tune. "Your Sister" is a gumdrop of a ballad with another humorous lyric that reflects Gurf's dry sense of humor, "I'm gonna have to sleep with your sister; Since we broke up, I sure have missed her; I might even get a blister, but I'm gonna have to sleep with your sister." You remember the old saying, "Man's reach must exceed his grasp or what is a heaven for?" Well, Gurf, he don't reach all that far, but his grasp well exceeds his talent and results in this delightful set. None of these tunes will sound startlingly new. However, on a generation of Nashville slick in country music, it's nice to go back to country roots. Enjoy!

Take it for what it is........2005-01-20

I love the way Gurf Morlix carves out his own turf, disregarding critics and possibly even admirers. You get a sense listening to him here, that he writes and plays for his own pleasure and would put forth just as good an effort whether he were in Carnegie Hall or his own Garage.

Take this album for what it is and you'll enjoy it immensely. What is it? Gurf playing and singing all by his lonesome, save for a little help from a drummer on a few tracks. Some cuts remind me of Buck Owens or Dave Dudley and others veer into real toe tappin' rockabilly.

Gurf is as polished as ever here on every instrument he attempts. And his vocals...... well, he's no Merle Haggard, but he applies his texas twang to uncomplicated, yet creative lyrics in such a way, that you can't help but like it.

Album of the Year? Far from it. But if you're not careful you might just find you're singing along with ole Gurf, as you head down the highway.

Gurf's Hillbilly disc, and his best.......2004-12-12

Good ol' Gurf; I knew it was just a matter of time before he gave us a taste of some definitive roots music. While his previous two efforts were roots rock based, he's replaced the electric guitar with a steel guitar as the forefront of the sound on this beauty. His songwriting suits him much better in this territory, and this is by far his strongest disc yet. I read one review saying that Gurf hadn't recorded his masterpiece yet with his previous disc "Fishin' in the Muddy", but he may have just done it with "Cut' N Shoot". He gets bad press sometimes, but who gives a damn. It seems all the best roots rockers do, and that's just 'cause they do it their way, not everybody else's. That's why I love this stuff, it's authentic, true blue punch-in-the-guts music.

who like to move. After their self titled debut, Wrecks-n-effect came back with their sopmore effort in the summer of 92, on the back of one of the biggest hits of that year, with 'Rump Shaker', an ode dedicated to the Female derriere. Lyrically, these tunes don't stray to far from the party grooves, sex, female, and how hard these boys roll.Their nothing here thats too deep, or on the political, but, riding the wave of the New jack Swing groove, for all it's worth, this is a good album to groove to.

I first been a fan to Wreckx-n-Effect since they put out the classic joint "Rump Shaker" which was produced by my man from the group Guy Teddy Riley. This was a breakthrough 4 them even they put 3 albums. I hope they'll come back and tight that 1 again one 'mo time on their next album. It's been so long. This is a must for rap fans, non-rap fans and/or rap beginners.

Firstly, I will keep this short since I do not have much time!
This group made it with a self-titled cd before this one, which proclaimed Teddy Riley Innovator and Founder of New Jack Swing. He also is the best producer from the day he started till now - Hands Down!!! One Hit Wonder?????? Check ya knowledge before you post such degrading things about someone who could make you a star with something he thought up in his sleep.

First off it is Absolutly Stupid for anyone to ever consider Wreckx-n-Effect A One hit wonder. I wonder how you figure that when Rump shaker wasn't even thier first release. Furthermore, It wasn't even thier first Hit Single, Thier First Hit Single was Called "New Jack Swing" Released on Motown Records in 1989.
The Song was So Huge it had the entire country doing the Bus Stop to it. So That totlally elminates them from the one hit wonders Group. Except if you're a New jack to the history of hip-Hop. If it wasn't for them and that song, Rhine Stone jackets would have never Been famous at the time. This Group has put out A Hit Single Almost every time they released an album. You have to study this hip-Hop thing. Rump Shaker Was the Second Big Song to be released By Wreckx, And Some people I know Still think The Song "New Jack Swing" Was Better. So I don't see anything One hit Wonder About that. This Album is

This is an good album, I would say very good but Having one tight lyrisist (Aqil Davidson) in a group where you don't get much of his ingenious flow and lyricl content, Makes this album fall just short of Very good. The beats hit hard but seem a little square at times. The lyrics save the songs more that
anything. The song wreckx-n-effect is a good example of this.
It's worth the money just don't expect much from the other guy in the group. He's clearly an extra. Other than that you should enjoy the Wreckx-n-effect experience.

I dont really think people should mention SNL because this has absolutely nothing to do with it! this is a jammin rockin blues cd, great remakes of great classics done by 2 guys who you can tell know their music. akroyd/belushi are really great at this, not like some celebs who try to dabble in music as a side thing, when i put this cd in there is no way i can stop without listening to the entire thing, its a good time guaranteed everytime!!!!!!!

I've always got a kick out of the blues brothers and I would recommend this cd to both snl fans and lovers of classic r&b/blues & rock......Having read some of the other reviews, I would like to point out a fallacy. This is NOT mostly original. There are some original tunes but over half are cover versions.In fact, nine of the thirteen songs are covers. I listed them below with the original recording artists-

Aykroyd & Belushi never tried to take credit for songs performed as the Blues Brothers and I don't think they would do so now.

True Identities Revealed.......2004-07-17

For 20+ years, Dan Aykroyd (an avid blues fan) has been performing the music he loved under the persona of Elwood Blues, one half of the now legendary "Blues Brothers" mystique. Thanks to the movies, it's been hard for Aykroyd to shed those glasses and hat and simply perform the music he loves AS Dan Aykroyd.

This album finally gives him the chance to perform as himself. Although teamed with one-time "Blues Brothers" singing mate, Jim Belushi (filling the shoes of Aykroyd's late partner, John Belushi), don't expect this to be another blues tribute album. For the first time, these two men (who have definitely blossomed as singers in their own right) have recorded a straight-forward studio album of modern blues songs, the majority of which are originals.

There is no gimmick on this album, simply two men singing, backed by a talented band (none of which were involved in the original Blues Brothers Band, by the way). As stated in other reviews, this is NOT a Blues Brothers recording. It IS a great blues project, however.

Jim Belushi and Dan Aykroyd are wonderful performers.......2004-03-08

I have gone to two of their CD signings and I got to met Dan Aykroyd. Jim, I met at a According To Jim taping. Songs from this CD was played on ATJ. The first season was "Cadillac Man", next season was "Have Love Will Travel" and "Can't Get Out Of It," and final this season they did "300 Pounds of Joy" and "Time Won't Let Me." Since I have it I been playing it over and over. I am a big fan of both of them, and also I love the Blues Brothers. They also do a wonderful Blues Brothers show. Any fan should add this to their collection, I have and its great music. I have Jim's other CD called 36-22-36 and it's also a great one. Both CD's I recommend. Great Blues music.

Joe Newman (tp) Frank Foster (ts) Tommy Flanagan (p) Eddie Jones (b) Billy English (d) 3/17/61. (Swingville)

Recorded 10 months after the excellent JIVE AT FIVE album (also for Swingville), and with Flanagan and Jones returnees, this album is just as good as its predecessor. Frank Foster's forceful, mainly middle-register playing is very effective, and Tommy Flanagan is as good as ever. Only one tune, MO-LASSES, which is a blues a bit too overloaded with funk, is not up the the high level of the other tracks. A solid date.

Great Intro to Ray Bryant.......2004-01-28

Those who know Ray Bryant's piano style know that he is from gospel and the blues but plays mainstream jazz with those overtones but without being derivative. He's original. His good music can be listened to over and over.

I first bought this disc as a vinyl LP from the sale bins at Woolco, and discovered it to be such a treasure that when the CD was issued, I included this disc among those that I want to have the rest of my life.

Ray "owns" St Louis Blues on this live recording and on an earlier studio version. Motherless Child is haunting but none of the disc is out of place. You can use this music for dinner music or to listen critically. Enjoy!

Unsung Classic From Jazz Master Benny Carter.......2001-02-15

Benny Carter is one of the greatest talents of the jazz world, yet he has never become a household name. His genius, however, as an instrumentalist, composer and arranger has always been apparent to his fellow musicians, and he remained active and in demand into his nineties.

Carter began his career in the mid 1920's, and worked with such early Swing bands as McKinney's Cotton Pickers and the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra, before leading his own successful swing orchestra. He then went to Europe for five years, working and recording with gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt and fellow expatriate Coleman Hawkins. Upon his return to the U.S. in 1939, he successfully reconstituted his orchestra and guested with such stars as Lionel Hampton and Count Basie. After an extended period composing scores for movies and television, Carter returned to the jazz world on a full-time basis in the mid-1970's, producing some of the greatest music of his career over the next two decades, often working with musicians young enough to be his grandchildren or great-grandchildren.

The alto sax was his primary instrument, and he was one of the finest practitioners of the swing-based, pre-bebop style that was popular in the 1930's and 1940's. When bebop arrived, Carter was more than capable of grasping some of its intricacies and nuances and incorporated them into his playing, without abandoning his earlier style. For this reason, his playing remained vital and exciting, even as his contemporaries fell from fashion. Carter was also an accomplished trumpeter. His greatest achievements, though, were as a composer and arranger. Only Duke Ellington surpasses Carter as a writer of innovative and sophisticated jazz compositions. His work as an arranger was similarly unique, whether for his own bands or with other artists.

"Montreux '77" is one of the great unknown classics of jazz recordings. Recorded at the renowned jazz festival only a few years into his "comeback," this is an often astonishing performance with a sympathetic backing trio. Its hard to believe that Carter was already 70 when this was recorded, because he plays with the fire and intensity of a man half that age. He plays a little trumpet here as well, and if he sounds a bit weaker here, he still plays with great intelligence and beauty. The program are all familiar jazz standards that have seldom been performed better. I feel like an ingrate to state this, but would have been nice to hear a Carter original or two. The recording quality is terrific, as were all of the titles in the series of "Montreux '77" recordings that were released by Pablo Records.

This is a wonderful recording, highly recommended to both serious and casual jazz fans alike. Benny Carter, who will turn 94 in 2001, is a treasure, and this is one of the best recordings in his long and accomplished career.

These 2 CD set consists of most of the Crew Cuts' hits plus other songs which look like they could have come from LPs from the 50s or 60s. All the songs got great harmony and nice arrangements. Some of the songs are from the Roaring 20s and some are old college campus songs probably from albums and not their singles, but they are all done so well, a little different from the Doo-Wop sound of their hits. If you like great close harmony, the Crew Cuts have a great sound.

If you are looking for more of the Crew Cuts other than their hits which are available on another CD, this is the CD to buy.

There is a total of 51 songs in the 2 CD set.

Album Description

Cantus proudly announces the release of "Deep River," a treasury of African-American Spirituals. "Deep River" also delves into the roots of American roots music by exclusively featuring music by the preeminent first and second generation African-American composers - Harry T. Burleigh, William Dawson, John W. Work and Jester Hairston - in both well known and long forgotten arrangements of these immortal songs. Recorded by Stereophile Magazine editor John Atkinson in 24 bit sound, "Deep River" is a treat for the ears and a balm for the soul.

Oil and Water..........2005-10-05

Don't Get me wrong... Cantus is one of the finest male chamber choirs around right now. They do marvelous work and cover a wide variety. Unfortunately, spirituals are not exactly Cantus's strongest suit. The biggest hindrance to this recording is that Cantus does not effectively capture the "spirit" of a spiritual. The music almost sounds funny because the spirituals are sung with very traditional, very trained classical voices. I love hearing people sing who were trained very meticulously to sing well, but I don't want to hear someone sing "Ezekiel Saw de Wheel" like Pavoratti. It sounds really funny and doen't capture the character of the music.
Another issue that I have with this recording (and most of Cantus's other recordings at that) is that it was recorded so softly. I don't like to have to feel like I am cranking my speakers to hear the music effectively. Being an active listener, I like to listen to music loud just because I can hear more layers when its loud. The low recording volume on the CD really hinders the active listening experience, leaving the CD to lend itself to the purpose of background music and passive listening.
Also, the first 5 arrangements on the disc are fairly bland. They are lack variety and musicality. Only until "Great God Almighty" comes around does the listener truly become exposed to really good choral writing. Other standing out arrangements are "Where You There?" which is absolutely moving, "There Is A Balm In Gilead" which is very well written, "Deep River" which is so tranquil and relaxing, and "Soon Ah Will Be Done" and "In His Care-O" are great bouncy arrangements.
Essentially, Cantus and Spirituals are just oil and water: they don't mix so well. Aside from a hand full of bland arrangements and a very low mixing job the CD only has one real hindrance of a problem: Cantus doesn't make the distinction between Spirituals and Brahms.

a little too wobbly for me.......2005-03-03

I am familiar with this group and their origins with the world famous St. Olaf Choir of Northfield, MN. While the singers are obviously talented, I felt like I was listening to 11 "solo" singers, rather than a tight ensemble. Way too much individual vibrato even considering the free-flowing genre of the music. I don't want them to be as "tight" as San Francisco's "Chanticleer", but holy smoke, there has got to be something in the middle. Maybe an association with Dale Warland would help, because they obviously have great potential.

A replacement for Robert Shaw.......2004-12-03

Many years ago I had a vinyl record by the Robert Shaw Chorale the title of which was "Deep River." I've been waiting for it to be reissued on cd and have purchased many recordings of negro spirituals on cd hoping to find one where the performance could be compared favorably with the Robert Shaw recording. All of the tries were busts until I found this one. Wow!!! This is a super recoridng of those spirituals. The only thing it lacks is the female voices but thi group of males needs to make no apologies. I love this cd.

The Best Recording by One of our Finest Choral Ensembles.......2004-10-24

"Take this Hammer,' "Steal Away," and "My Lord What a Morning" are just three of the acappella treasures recorded in a warm, natural accoustic by these nine superb singers from Minnesota. The arrangements they've chosen are as complex and moving as their source lyrics and melodies, and the the 24-bit recording by John Atkinson is as good as you get.

It's not easy to make spirituals sound fresh, dynamic and viscerally affecting. But that's exactly what Cantus has done. This is choral singing of the highest order recorded by a master of recorded sound.

I do hope Cantus continues to record on this or another independent label. A big music conglomerate would just glitz it up.

These young men have accomplished so many splendid things on their own over the past nine years, and this release is their best by far.

Wonderful Ensemble.......2004-04-15

I bought "let Your Voice Be Heard" some time ago and really loved the interpretations, the virtuosity of the singing and the clarity of the recording. I'm a Stereophile subscriber and read the articles by Atkinson regarding the recording sessions - they take great care to do a good job and it shows.

This CD is compelling, if you like choral music you will love this disc. Listen to it a few times and you will go away singing.

There are a couple of spirituals on this disc that are also on "Let your voice..." but in different arrangements.

Good but a bit misleading.......2004-01-07

First-I liked the album. The good things about it included the variety and breadth of musical styles - from Bob Brozman (poster child for all things National Guitar) to Kayton Roberts who does a nice version of Bells of St. Mary's. My only gripe is that much of the music deviates from what is known as the "lap steel guitar" (a relatively small electrified six to 10 string instrument), offering various slide guitar and resonator guitar songs as well. It would be as if they called a record "all about trombones" and only include one or two songs just with trombones and the rest with other instruments. I was not disappointed with the sound, but thought that they could have either called it something else or included more actual lap steel guitars on the record.
