Album Description
*A specially priced 2CD set with over 110 minutes of some of the greatest film music in the history of cinema.
*New digital recordings in spectacular and sound performed by the acclaimed City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and National Youth Jazz Band.
*Includes world premiere recordings from "The Birdman Of Alcatraz," "Thoroughly Modern Millie," "Airplane!" and "An American Werewolf In London."
*In 2004 the world of cinema lost one of the most iconic figures in film composing. In a career that spanned half-a-century and over 250 films, Elmer Bernstein was responsible for writing the music to many of the greatest and most loved movies of all time ranging from "The Ten Commandments," "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Great Escape," through to "True Grit" and "Airplane!" This collection has been lovingly created and compiled as a tribute to a genius and true master of the art of film scoring.

Sad, Really Sad.......2007-05-13
These CDs don't meet the standards that I expect from Elmer Bernstein's wonderful film music.
*It's just Boring*
The ensemble doesn't have the energy one would expect to play "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Man with the Golden Arm". I think the City of Prague and National Youth Jazz Orchestras were bargain orchestras used to make an inexpensive CD set of one of my favorite film composers. The conducting and arrangements were what made this an obviously bad album.
An excellent movie themes antology by ELMER BERNSTEIN.......2007-05-10
Silva Screen Records, presents this antology of the music from the late great composer/conductor ELMER BERNSTEIN, who supervised this recording just before die.
Played the The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted by his one time assistant James Fitzpatrick
Recorded in HDCD and Dolby Surround
Excellent.......2007-04-22
it's unfortunate that more tracks weren't able to be recorded as theree was a good 15-20 minutes of space remaining on both discs. Regardless, this is an excellent sampler, especially in conjunction with Varese's Bernstein sampler including rare stuff like the Black Cualdron.
With regards to this silva set, these recordings range back to 1994, with Sons of Katie Elder and True Grit being recorded for a John Wayne CD and Bridge At Remagen for a CD of classic War themes. The Great Escape was also recorded for that CD, but producer James Fitzpatrick opted to record a new arrangement (same with Magnificent Seven). In '97, The Buccaneer for included on a Swashbucklers disc, while Heavy Metal was on the popular 'Space and Beyond' compilation. In '98, the world premiere recording of Airplane first appeared on a DISASTERS film disc. So while it may technically be the world premiere RECORDING it certainly is not the world premiere CD RELEASE of that recording. Ghostbusters was included on Space 3: Beyond the Final Frontier, the second followup to the popular 'Space and Beyond'. Fast forward to 2002 and 4 recordings first appeared on WAY OUT WEST: ESSENTIAL WESTERN FILM MUSIC COLLECTION VOLUME TWO, those being The Comancheros, The Hallelujah Trail, The Scalphunters and The Shootist. Man With the Golden Arm and Walk on the Wild are from Silva's JAZZ IN FILM cd.
The remaining tracks were all newly recorded for this release. They are of course the strongest tracks, seeing as the City of Prague Philharmonic has improved over time. I do wonder though why they did not include the older arrangements of Great Escape and Mag. Seven as bonus tracks.
I also recommend the simultaneously released '40 years of Film Music: Jerry Goldsmith' for another great set honoring a late great film composer.
Great Film Music.......2007-03-09
This is a great recording of some of the best film music ever. From the
great westerns to the Theme from Airplane to music he did for television,
Bernstein was one of the greatest.
Fun, Powerfull music.......2007-02-17
It's great! It brings back memories of my dad. He loved John Wayne and the old cowboys of the Magnificent Seven. But it's nice just to listen and relax (it's not all cowboy music).

Great Sampling Collection.......2007-07-29
Over the past thirty years, my father and I have been collecting film music on various formats--vinyl, tape, reel-to-reel, CD, recording it from the movie, even. This collection is a great starter for someone who wants to start owning movie music. Lots of big hitters, including Hermann, Barry, Conti, Mancini, and Goldsmith as well as some contemporary scores that are great, too. This is the type of collection I would make for a friend who asks "what scores should I start with?"
Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13
This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.
Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28
Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.
"essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16
When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004
There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!
Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.
Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Innovative music.......2007-06-03
I have been listening to such contemporary artists as Bond, Yanni, Taleinsin Orchestra,... so I am not a new comer to contemporary fusion classical music. If I had listened to this CD when it first came out almost 10 years ago, I would probably have given it a 5. I am only giving it a four now (maybe a 3.5?) because there are simply other better albums out there - most of the songs here are more classically influenced than its purported to be. Also, while Vanessa-Mae is an accomplished violinist, she is not the most spectacular violnist. At times, she lackes the energy to propell her music to the next level. However, all in all, an enjoyable album, although nothing ground-breaking.
Slop from a slapper.......2005-03-01
This terrible and dull album launched the career of Über-nothing violinist, Vanessa Mae.
It is hard to describe the depth of the level to which this album stoops to be "popular". Low brow? You bet! Exploitative? Oh yeah! Dumbed down Classical Music? Well, that's what we've got here!
Value of this album? Hard to say. I am sure that Vanessa's parents and agent are happy with this prosaic product.
Very dumbed down dumb music - for the legions of philistines and musically naive of the world.
In one word, a "dud".
HO HUM --- REALLY NOT INTERESTING AT ALL.......2003-07-11
As violin technique goes, there is not much here in evidence to get all fired up about. She is an adequete violinist who does just fine with the material she is given, but the only people who are going to think that she is a violinist for the ages are people who don't know anything about violin playing.
That being said, this album had the potential to be interesting, except that the arrangements of Mike Batt are about as flat as one can get. This album seems to be more about Mike Batt's ego than about Vanessa Mae, as Mike perform, conducts, composes & produces practically every piece. This would be fine if the end product was remotely interesting, but of it sounds like it should be background music. The Bach arrangement, with gratuitous techno-pop flourishes thrown in at every opportunity, just bogs down in an effort to be "innovative." Most of Batt's compositions leave no impression whatsoever.
Any lunatic who puts this crossover album in the classical category truly needs to go back to Music Appreciation 101, to be reminded of what classical music is. File this one in the Fluffy Boring Pop category and forget about it.
Classical With a Twist.......2003-07-01
The first notes of Vanessa Mae's The Violin Player sound like a dramatic beginning to a classical composition, but it's not. This album in fact is anything but traditional classical. It's unique, creative, energetic and alive and I give Vanessa props for being brave enough to come out with it. It's hard to be different. The fact that Vanessa did make the music and did it so well says that she's a true artist, something sadly lacking in a world where technical mastery is considered more important than artistic invention. This is a fantastic, fun album that you'll want to listen to again and again, the music hitting something within you and bringing all sorts of energy you didn't know you had bubbling to the surface. If you won't buy it for that reason, then buy it for it's historical significance. It's already plain to me, Vanessa Mae with this album changed the one sided face of classical music forever.
Highly Listenable.......2002-11-13
Let's get this straight upfront: Vanessa Mae is a good violin player, but I've heard plenty better in the classical world today. You buy this CD not for Mae's technique as a violinist (frankly, I'd give her just a 6 or 7 out of 10), but for her innovation - her ground-breaking album that blends the old-style classical music with pop/techno/jazz, and gives that genre of music (which had there for a while even before Mae) the kind of visibility that it did not use to have. This album is novel and upbeat, and is highly listenable both to people who like classical music and those who find it intimdating (or boring). Would especially recommend this to people in their 20s and 30s.

Stellar Album On Serious Subjects.......2007-04-30
Too many times in the Christian music market today you see artists get pigeon-holed into a rut of singing bland, non-challenging lyrics or repeated praise choruses that have almost lost their meaning to the listener. Andrew Osenga (formerly of The Normals and now of Caedmon's Call) told me just the other night that his band's old label forced them to record a second praise album - they did not have a choice really. And he told me not to buy it because "it sucked. Our hearts were not in it. . . It is not what Caedmon's Call is. Never was."
Derek Webb has refused a "real label" and instead has chosen to stay indie (a move I see repeated my multiple artists in CCM now), and subsequently has been able to stay high above that rut which has unfortunately become the norm. He has always stayed true to his faith and at the same time, created great music with challenging lyrics.
But Mockingbird is different: you find yourself wincing at times because of the cold, hard truth that has been packed into it. He shakes up what we thought to be true and reminds us of what the Bible actually commands: that we are called to give to the impoverished, that "peace by way of war is like purity by way of fornication," and that the second great lie is that "Jesus was a white, middle-class republican, and if you wanna be saved you have to learn to be like Him."
It feels a bit like a needed punch in the gut, but in the end you feel the need to sing along.
Spirtually alive, informed, filled with love.......2007-02-28
Webb's take on the politicization of Christianity has apparently wrankled some of his (former?) admirers. I would be less than honest if I said that every one of these songs work from first to finish: some of them have more the feel of newspaper editorials than pieces of popular art or gospel songs. Yet I admire this record immensely, and not just because I find myself enthusiastically agreeing with Webb at virtually every point (and I do). Because Webb risks alienating his fans with lines suggesting that Jesus is not, in fact, a white, middle-class Republican (the nerve!) or reminding us, in a time of war, of Jesus' message of peace, this is a brave record. And though these are, if you think about it, rather obvious points, I respectfully disagree with the other reviewers who allege that love is missing from this record. I believe Webb's lyrics are filled with truth, wisdom, and deep love for Christ and His church. It is because he cares about the church that he is concerned with its political confusion--its strange tendency over the past several years to (so to speak) render unto Caesar things that are God's. Webb seems to me to suggest that we North American Christians are a narrow-minded bunch, too tribal and finger-pointing (something Christ was not). Church is not a place to go to be instructed in what one should think about an array of current issues or who to vote for; church is, like Christ Himself, beyond the merely political (even as we acknowledge that our faith is a part of who we are in every facet of life).
Beyond all this, a lot of the music on this record is also first rate, almost as good as anything beyond its Christian contemporary marketing--indie acoustic, maybe? Like a lot of other admirers of this record, I am especially fond of "I Hate Everything (But You)," which should have been a big hit everywhere. This almost (but not quite) secular song gets to the heart of true love as adeptly and uniquely as any song I can think of right now. Webb's lyrics are prophetic, but he can also write a beautiful tune. The stripped-down musical arrangements (generally much simpler than those on the equally wonderful SHE MUST AND SHALL GO FREE) are fitting for the to-the-gut lyrics.
Admittedly, I do not listen to a whole lot of contemporary Christian music. The vast majority of Christian musicians I admire are not usually grouped in this category. (Bruce Cockburn, Sam Phillips, T Bone Burnett, Al Green, the late Mark Heard and, I guess, U2, come to mind, but there are others.) But Derek Webb is, and will remain, one of my few exceptions. I have recommended him to a lot of people and will continue to. Now I sit back and anxiously await Webb's next one!
Take time to let it soak in.......2007-02-23
At first, I was less than enthusiastic about this album. But, after several straight-through hearings, I'm hooked. I understand that many are turned off by the sometimes odd mixing and arrangements, as well as the pointed and confrontational lyrics. But, as someone trying to figure out how to be a responsible Jesus-follower in the American culture, while not falling prey either to the white middle-class Christian ghetto, on the one hand, or the anything-goes relativism of the world, on the other, Mockingbird has become a tremendous encouragement and breath of fresh air. Every time I listen to it, I think to myself, "I'm not alone."
Webb's best yet.......2007-01-26
It's funny how musical tastes differ, and how devoted fans will see an artist's album as either "incredible," "an average effort," or "disappointing." Regarding Mockingbird, I am in the camp that considers this album his best yet. Furthermore, this review is based more on musical value than lyrical value: I consider Webb to be one of the most thoughtful and poetic songwriters, and regardless of muscial quality his lyrics are always well-crafted, thought-provoking, and, well, provocative. Webb doesn't disappoint lyrically with Mockingbird; it's the musical value that sets this album apart for me. The title song especially is catchy, staying in your head without having that "brain worm" quality that so many pop songs have. I guess I find the songs on this album overall to be more melodic and the music even more passionate than his previous two albums. I'm just happy Derek Webb is out there continuing to create and release new music - his albums are diamonds, especially compared to most pop music (Christian and otherwise) being released nowadays. I hope a new studio album is in the works!
Like jumping into a pool of freezing water...takes some getting used to........2006-10-10
This album isn't Derek's best; however, after listening to it many times through, it has grown on me. I wouldn't go as far to say that it is horrible, like the last reviewer. It's good, but takes some getting used to.

One of Several Recordings of this Score............2007-02-11
Undoubtedly TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is a masterpiece score, and no small thanks goes to orchestrators Leo Shuken and Jack Hayes. In addition to this fine (but rather over-produced Varese recording) is the Mainstream CD re-issue of the original Ava LP release. Sadly not only is the Mainstream CD deleted, but it was missing one track and several other tracks have become distorted, perhaps due to improper storage. Screen Archives currently offer a 1970's re-recording as part of an 11 CD set, this one with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, also conducted by Bernstein. I recommend this as closest to the original, other than the actual Ava LP.

"To Kill A mockingbird" is one of my favorite movies and is my favorite book. When watching and rewatching the dvd, I also fell in love with the soundtrack. Was so glad it was reissued. I now have the soundtrack, which is a wonderful addition to my collection. Love it!
SENSITIVE YET HAUNTING.......2006-11-10
THIS MOTION PICTURE SCORE GAVE ME CHILLS WHEN I FIRST HEARD IT. IT BROUGHT BACK MEMORIES OF THE MOVIE AND I MUST SAY, THIS HAS TO BE ONE OF THE BEST MOTION PICTURES OF ALL TIME. SEVERAL TIMES WHILE LISTENING TO THE VARIOUS SELECTIONS I FOUND MYSELF TEARING UP BECAUSE THE MOVIE MADE SUCH AN IMPRESSION ON ME. WELL WORTH BUYING.
As good as DVD.......2006-08-14
This original score sounds like real sound track. I have a DVD of this movie and repeat watching many times. But when I listen to this CD, I can remember pure impressions even without visible scenes.
Comfort Music.......2005-10-20
I have been entralled with "To Kill A Mockingbird" ever since I was 12 years old. After all of that time, I finally bought the soundtrack and am greatly impressed.
The instrumentation that Berstein uses and develops is amazing. When you listen to the first couple of piano notes from the very first track, try it in the dark with your eyes closed or on a fall day wrapped in a blanket. To me, it truly is comfort music and I am brought to tears on track number nine. It is beautiful music, a soundtrack worth getting.

Beauty !.......2003-08-14
I am not a Tommy Flanagan expert- but I have recently fallen in love with his music. This CD captures him certainly at an inspired time and also his drummer and bassist follow him very well, to say the least.
This CD will offer a variety of moods- humor, happiness, tenderness, and more...
Not much else needs to be said, but i might as well mention that the sound quality is good, the CD is over an hour long, and Tommy knows how to play the piano with both of his hands- which is rare.
Also, I absolutely love the songs Tin Tin Deo, Sunset and the Mockingbird, and Malice Towards None. The others are also great.
happy anniversary Tommy Flanagan !.......2001-09-16
On March 16.1997,Tommy Flanagan came to Village Vanguard to celebrate his 67th birthday. The result is this splendid record. This is Flanagan at his very best, beautifully recorded and in outstanding form.Peter Washington plays bass, and Lewis Nash,a great young musician,is the drummer.Tommy Flanagan pays tributes to the great Thad Jones, member of the Jones family with his brothers Elvin and Hank,in two tunes ("birdsong" and "let's"),to Dizzy Gillespie ("tin tin deo" and "I waited for you"),Tom McIntosh ("with malice toward none" and a masterpiece,a medley "the balanced scales/the cupbearers") and of course Duke Ellington, playing one of Duke's rarest tunes, the very emotional "Sunset and the mockingbird",the first movement of Duke's "Queen's suite".What more is there to say? Tommy Flanagan is one of jazz greatest piano players of today, with Hank Jones and Kenny Barron. His playing includes many influences: Teddy Wilson,Bud of course,Hank Jones,MaryLou Williams,Duke and Earl Hines. But he is one of jazz 's most original voices,a real master of his instrument.Every one who was lucky enough to see him on stage knows what I mean.Tommy is a superlative artist, and a beautiful man, simple, sweet, always ready and disponible to talk to you. Each track of this album is a gem, but to me,the highlight of this concert is the last track,a solo effort on the beautiful Mack Gordon tune,"goodnight my love",dedicated by Tommy to his marvelous wife,Diana.Tommy's playing is very reminiscent of Thelonious Monk during this performance.A special thank to the audience who wishes him a happy birthday at the end of the record.
Here I Am, Bird........2000-11-25
To be privileged to be a bird on a wire at a Tommy Flanagan concert is something to remember. This live recording from New York's Birdland is almost as good, recorded as it is on his 67th birthday with a most appreciative audience on hand. Tommy Flanagan is physically perched by the keyboard, gentle yet powerful, a great jazz sight. A robin is a bird and so is an eagle, gentle yet powerful - powerful yet gentle. This set opens with a tuneful melody by a fellow Motor City bird, Thad Jones, and turns and twists into a wonderful example of this Bird in flight. With Lewis Nash and Peter Washington in tuneful, telephatic tandem this becomes a complete collection of works, nodding also towards Tom MacIntosh and the Birks Bird, and the Mockingbird that is Ellington. In the great scheme of things Tommy Flanagan is occasionally overlooked his place in the pecking order of superlative jazz piano stylists, but here's the remedy - buy this album and appreciate his genius. It is a grand and challenging work, and many Happy Returns to the jazzbird that is Tommy Flanagan.
A fine live performance.......1999-12-03
This is a wonderful CD that I seem to never grow tired of. The tracks are at times slow and tender, then shift to a life-affirming, energetic pace. Mr. Flanagan's playing is both witty and playful. It's a nice addition to any collection.
marginal fidelity.......1999-09-19
This CD typifies Flanagan's customary fine artistry, but the fidelity is marginal. Where were the piano mikes?

Carter Burwell cut his film scoring teeth on many a Coen brothers movie, quickly gaining a reputation for a quirky, human-scaled inventiveness that informed everything from jazz and folk to orchestral music and even the well-timed nod to Morricone. That often introspective sensibility is well paired to director John Lee Hancock's revisionist take on the legend of San Antonio's fabled doomed fortress, which focuses more on the conflicted human dimensions of its characters than familiar cardboard, pop culture heroics. Burwell's use of orchestral pomp is deliberate and decidedly restrained; more often the composer leans on spare, evocative passages of simple, though ever-inventive folk-based music (like the elegiac "Quiet Mountain") played by various combinations of guitar, banjo, and violin. Vintage traditional Mexican and American tunes are also given their atmospheric due via Jennifer Hammond's and Craig Eastman's arrangements of "La Zandunga" and "Listen to the Mockingbird Sing," respectively. But its Burwell's own peculiarly modernist instincts that inform both tradition ("Crockett's DeGuello") and his own masterfully understated cues, particularly the bleak, almost gothic emotional landscape of his six-part "Battle of the Alamo Suite" and its bittersweet coda, "Blood or Texas." --Jerry McCulley

Don't Remeber THIS "Alamo".......2006-07-21
When making another version of a film that has already been made producers, directors, performers, and score composers are too often tempted to "do it differently",as if by twisting and turning a basic premise they will succeed..The classic film version of"The Alamo"is and remains the John Wyane version, which was nominated for several academy awards.Granted, the John Wyane version had little to do with actual history, but, then again, the purpose of the film industry has always been to entertain, not to teach..John Wyane, who produced and directed,as well as being the star of that film chose Dimitri Tiomkin to score his film.
Tiomkin,and old-line symphonic genius,provided a magnificent score,at once adventurous and poingnant..
The people responsible for this version of"The Alamo"decided to teach, rather than entertain, and,at the same time attempted to be politically correct as well. Thus, the mythic aspects inherent in the John Wyane version were replaced by morally ambiguous nonsense, and heroics were more or less eliminated in favor of a rather desperate survival theme, coupled with some added imperialistic touches with the addition of the Sam Houston charecter as a major player along with Bowie,Crockett, and Travis.
The people responsible for this film ,having many fine symphonic-oriented composers to choose from instead opted for minalmism by Carter Burwell..One can hardly imagine, for instance,a five-star gourmet meal served on a foam plate, with plastic knife and fork.Likewise one can hardly imagine a would-be epic western (even if it is very revisionist)bearing a score that plays like a new-age snoozer...But this is exactly what Burwell has given us...There are no epic themes here...There is an enormous orchestra credited as having participated in this project however when one listens to the finished product one is hard-pressed to HEAR any evidence of this participation.
John Wyane's script called for a lot of action on-screen,and Tiomkin obligingly provided very suitable musical themes..
The script for this new film does not call for very much action, even short-changing the audience during the final battle scene by shooting it in near-darkness,and underscoring it with a dirge-like monotone.
This new film was"troubled"from the very start.Ron Howard was supposed to direct but he didn't.The cast was shuffled around several times. Some "Main"charecters were eliminated entirely ,although thier traces continued to show up in the trailers released for this movie..While on the subject of the trailers for this film, the music used in them was 110% better than the Burwell claptrap..Scenes featured in the trailers were actually NOT in the finished film. The film was scheduled for a christmas opening,a slot usually reserved for top-of-the-line oscar contenders, and was then, suddenly yanked, and later released in April, where it died a much-deserved death after about a week in theatres,a colossal flop.
The film was terrible, and part of this is due to the Burwell score which is terrible-plus.
Defending the Alamo.......2005-09-09
I enjoyed the film and, in particular, the intelligent and sensitive portrayal of David Crockett but...so much had been cut by the time it was released as a DVD in England. The soundtrack is pleasant enough so if you liked it on the screen you will enjoy the CD but we do not have the Deguello on its own, (but have the haunting duo with David Crockett's fiddle), and we do not have the saucy little tune played at San Jacinto. On balance, worth buying.
Excellent CD.......2005-06-22
This is an excellent CD. If you are interested in this CD you will love "Audio Tour of the Alamo and Old San Antonio of the Wild West". This CD will gudie you around the Alamo Battlefield in present day San Antonio sshowing yu the actual locations of events of the battle. To hear a sample of this audio tour go to

Enjoyable a-typical score.......2005-03-05
Most war movies have underscore's that pulse with energy and power of battle. Carter Burwell takes another course. His music is melancholy and some people have taken the celtic sounding music and complained out it but I found the music to be powerful and perfectly fitting with the movie. The Alamo is also enjoyable as a single listening experience although it does help to have seen the movie. I particularly enjoyed the track where Crockets fiddle is combined with the Mexican "Slit Throat" band. Overall, I found this cd to be enjoyable and it gets better every time i listen to it.
None Better.......2004-12-01
A few comments about the movie The Alamo, if you would indulge me for a moment. It is pertinent. I didn't have high expectations for this film, the trailers I saw made it out to be another larger-than-life, ain't-afraid-of-nothing, cliché-filled motion picture. We lived in San Antonio for several years, it is a great town filled with wonderful people. We visited the Alamo on several occasions. It is a holy place for Texans, sacred, and being "non-Texans" I am sure most of the locals felt we really couldn't appreciate or even grasp the significance of the place, the honor of those who fought and died there. I must admit it was all somewhat lost on me. Thus, I was fully expecting this movie to be overdone and nauseating, especially considering I am not the biggest fan of two of the lead actors (Billy Bob Thorton and Dennis Quaid).
OK, please bear with me, I will get to my point in a second. We ended up renting the film as I had heard the cinematography was sensational (it was). But my biggest surprise was the film itself. Not the script, not the actors, but the entire film. I can't really put into words how good it was, not perfect, but an excellent motion picture and probably an accurate depiction of the individuals and events as they occurred. And both Thornton and Quaid were exceptional...they deserve Oscars come January, and it will be a shame if they don't get them.
Now, concerning this soundtrack. To put it simply, if this CD isn't the best soundtrack winner for 2004, then there is a conspiracy going on. It isn't on Amazon's editors picks, nor the customer's favorites list, I chalk that up to being it was just recently released. However, it should be on both, and highly competitive for the top honors this year. It is simply that good. Carter Burwell set a new standard with the soundtrack for O Brother, Where Art Thou? and may have exceeded it with this one. The music here just puts the visualizations of the movie back into my head...the music retells the story as well as the images.
The bottom like is fairly straightforward, if you liked the movie than you owe it to yourself to get this soundtrack. There is absolutely no way you will be anything other than engrossed in it.

A copy in every household . . ........2003-02-09
This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".
A sampler feat. some of the greatest film scores in history........2001-09-06
Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).
"the man behind Varese Sarabande ~ Robert Townson".......2001-04-06
The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.
For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.
This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.
A big, big thank you to ~ Matthew Joseph Peak (cover/session photography) ~ Jonathan Allen, Geoff Foster, Bernie Kirsh, Mike Ross, Mike Sheady and Al Swanson (recording engineers) ~ Rich Breen (mastering engineer) ~ and for the extensive 28 page liner-note booklet featuring "behind the scenes" memories of these past 500 albums, may we look forward to future classics on the next 500 CD's from producer...ROBERT TOWNSON!

Customer Reviews:
an under appreciated gem.......2007-07-26
"Sharin' in the Groove" is a remarkable disc and I'm surprised by the Amazon's community's lack of enthusiasm. Granted, tributes can be a mixed bag, but "Sharin' in the Groove" succeeds where others fail. First, the musical choices are extremely eclectic. While rock is well represented, Blues, Reggae, orchestral and marching band are just some of the other genres. This means that phans who've played out Phish can rediscover their best songs. "Sharin' in the Groove" contains two discs. The first CD is absolutely phenomenal. It's far better than Phish's earliest and latest studio releases. Every song offers a five star performance. Perhaps the strongest is Amfibian's version of 'The Wedge.' Then again Jimmy Buffet's reggae infused 'Gumbo' is also exceptional. 'My Friend My Friend > Guyute' is played by the Vermont Youth Orchestra. Had this been released as a single disc, it would stand as an outstanding tribute. This is true given the uneven quality of the second disc. It features some musical jewels (like The Wailers' roots reggae rendition of 'Makisupa Policeman') and some real duds (like Los Villain's butchering of 'Chalkdust Torture'). Between the extremes, some songs are just mediocre. Second disc highlights include a straight jazz version of 'Tweezer > Magilla,' which sounds similar to the version played by Trey's big band during the "Plasma" era. Paying tribute to Phish's barbershop quartet music is FRED's 'Poor Heart.' 'Cars Trucks Buses' is a big disappointment. Given that it was Medeski, Martin and Wood (MMW) who inspired Page McConnell to originally write the song, MMW should have performed the tune. It seems that John Scofield was as close as the producers could get to John Medeski and the guys. While the combination of Scofield and Project Logic sounds interesting, it just doesn't work since DJ Logic tries to solo throughout the entire song. Given that Lake Trout is one of the disc's most exciting groups, their unrecognizable rendition is another let down. While the idea of a marching band version of 'Golgi Apparatus' may sound awful, it works really well. While the second disc is much weaker than the first, it ultimately adds to the adventure that is "Sharin' in the Groove." The booklet contains detailed notes on the project. If the overall musical quality wasn't enough to inspire a purchase, it is a fund raiser for the Mockingbird Foundation. "Sharin' in the Groove" is an essential disc for the Phish phan.
A tribute as diverse as the band itself.......2004-10-02
Sharin' in the Groove blew away my expectations. Tribute albums are usually ho-hum, imo. However, the varied performance on this double album are well worth the money--especially since it all goes to charity!
My favorite cut is Jimmy Buffett's 'Gumbo', fantastic!
Jim Raras
Great cuts, good cause.......2004-05-10
I'm biased because I produced this double-disc compilation, but since no one else has yet reviewed it, I think I can fairly step outside the project and say that it has great diversity, some fascinating takes on Phish's material (some more comfortable, others more exploratory), and flows nicely as something you can listen to from start to finish. Plus, all the net proceeds go to music education for children, making it a wonderful gift on both ends!

Mark O'Connor is the heir to a long line of composer-performers who wrote music for themselves to play. Like his predecessors, O'Connor writes to his strengths, which include a lovely, expressive tone, a natural, easy way with the instrument, and an innate feeling for the style. The three works on this record were initially conceived as the movements of a concerto, and though they became independent pieces, they're connected by thematic and melodic elements. In style and atmosphere, they take their inspiration from the folk music, as well as the landscape and history, of America.
"Call of the Mockingbird" is a study in the evocation of nature and its sounds. The solo violin joins woodwinds, horns, and string pizzicato in conjuring the voices of birds, and there is an improvised, unaccompanied cadenza toward the end. The music breathes a simple, peaceful serenity. "Trail of Tears" commemorates the tragic dispossession of the Cherokee Indians; melancholy, a bit dissonant, the music has the heavy tread of a forced march and builds up to a powerful climax. In "Fanfare for a Volunteer," the death march becomes a clarion call for freedom, with drums, trumpets, and other brass; the solo fiddle bursts into a string of tunes and dances, and joins the drums in another improvised cadenza. After a quiet interlude, the piece ends with more martial fifes and drums. Throughout, perhaps the most unusual aspect of the music is the combination of folk-style fiddling with the highly sophisticated, masterful scoring for a large symphony orchestra; indeed, O'Connor's avowed purpose is to showcase the orchestral sections as much as the soloist. His playing is superb, disciplined as well as free, and the orchestra supports him splendidly. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
Truly a gem in modern composition and performance.......2007-02-16
I bought this CD because I've thoroughly enjoyed O'Connor's "Fiddle Concerto" for years. With this purchase, I was hoping for something similar, and upon listening, it has far exceeded my expectations. This is now one of my favorite CDs. It is full of life and joy, and I like it more every time I listen to it. It is so rare these days to find high-quality modern orchestral compositions, especially ones that speak to the soul (as this one does).
In the CD notes, O'Connor mentions that he wrote this as a follow-up to the Fiddle Concerto. "Three Pieces" really functions as a complete work with three movements. The first and third tracks are faster, and the middle track is slow and lyrical. The fanfare at the beginning of the third track is a nice touch, and is very Copland-esque (thinking of "Fanfare for the Common Man").
Kudos to Mark!!
Mark O'Connor--the new Aaron Copland.......2004-05-05
Mark O'Connor will become known as the Aaron Copland of his time. What a wonderful group of pieces. Also impressive is "The American Seasons" by O'Connor.
New Classic that defies this century's unpleasant influences.......2001-09-23
I have to admit i came upon this CD because of my penchant for Maestro Mercurio's talents, and not through any familiarity with O'Connor's performances or compositions.
After reading that these three pieces were joined, then separated I wondered how that would be reflected in the works.
Well, they are related, for sure, but not an ounce of unwelcome repetition between the pieces is to be found. Only a lovely continuity of themes and a consistent level of what can only be described as genuine faith, by all involved, in what is being shared.
I almost felt as if the works were being written and performed by O'Connor on the spot, with the orchestra being an extension of the fiddler, himself. This speaks to the talents of O'Connor, but also for Mercurio, who always brings his all to a performance. It is symbiotic.
I read in some other reviews that O'Connor is reflective of other composers of this century. All i can say about that is for the most part, I do not like most contemporary compositions of a classical nature. There is usually a rhythm to them that i find disenchanting, and it almost deterred me from purchasing this piece. But alas, this CD is a thing beauty from the beginning to the end. Laurie in Alaska
Music for the heart and soul.......2000-09-04
Mark O'Connor with his understanding and love of the violin and his love of life has captured the essence of the heart breaking beauty of the Tennessee hills. His music soars and swoops and dips weaving a magical life of its own. If you enjoy the passion of Hillary Hahn wait until you begin to listen to Mark's story because that is what this piece is. It is the story of the Cherokees and their heart-rending loss of their land. It is the story of the seasons with their beauty and their harshness. This CD will be one you will play over and over and over, never tiring and each time finding something new that will for just a short space in time, take your breath away.
Fanfare for Mark O'Connor.......2000-05-29
In Texas, we would say, "Now that boy can fiddle!" Yup, he surely can, but boy, can he compose, too.
This CD is called three pieces for violin and orchestra, but I think of it as one large symphonic work. It's a tribute to the violin and fiddle players out there, as well as a tribute to Americans. From "Shenandoah" to the spirit of Aaron Copland, these pieces reach into the heart of what makes an American.
Driving down the road anywhere in the USA, you'll feel that this music accurately reflects the panorama passing by. Whether or not you like classical music, this is great stuff. It's definitely a winner.
