This Album Sounds Like An Electric Circus...And I Kinda Like It (Rating: 8 out of 10- -4.0 stars).......2007-08-03

I think this album angered a lot of Common fans, espeically since he showed his experimental side of himself on this LP. Also since this is between Like Water For Chocolate and Be, two of his softer and more soulful LPs. This album has so many influences and contributions (see the front cover) that people may believe that Common stepped out of his range. I personally find it to be an excellent album.

The Roots' ?uestlove produced some of the tracks. "Between Me, You, & Liberation" is one fine track, especially with the drum pattern that he made. "Come Close" was the lead single featuring Mary J. Blige, that was excellent. The creativity shows when the song "Electric Wire Hustle Flower" plays and features Sonny of P.O.D. Say what you want, but I like that song. The sex song "*69 (P.S. With Love)" is another softer sounding beat and features Bilal. The last 30 seconds of the track has a nice mellow beat that is worth waiting for.

There are a few rough spots on this album though. "I Got A Right Ta" featuring Pharrell is one rough song that I really didn't have the mood for. "Soul Power" I was thinking the beat was going to drop, but never came. And the final two tracks are great, but could have been shortened since they are 8+ minutes. Other than that, this album is excellent.

Don't hate on this LP. It is very creative and experimental. Many people have gotten settled with the soulful type Common, so this did kind of come from left field. I didn't think this album was going to get bad reviews until I saw this album received 4 mics in The Source, so I thought it was dope. If you listen to this without thinking about his other albums, you will find that this album is very underrated. Peace.

Common- Electric Circus.......2007-08-03

Well i am not gonna lie, this album did disapoint me a little bit. I was expecting so much better for a follow up to Like Water for Chocolate. But he changed his song so drastically, it was shocking to listen to this album. He changed his sound to a Funk sound as apossed to his phenominal soul hip hop sound he had before. And the other thing that bothered me a bit about this album was that he had someoned featured on every song but one, and i am cool with good features with good artists but 12 out of 13 songs is a bit over doin it i think. But the one song he does alone "Soul Power" was definetly a gem amongest alot of just ok songs. Mostly because this song was produced by J Dilla. And then you cant argue with the great "Come Close" with the great Mary J, which gained a fair amount of airplay. The only other song on this album that really sticks out in my mind was "Aquarius" featuring Bilal which is one of those classic dreamy sounding Common songs. I mean even though this album was a bit disappointing compared to some of his others, it still beats 90% of the other rap music out today. So pretty much this was a bit of an off album for Common but it is still ok compared to other albums that came out this year.

Dont get it twisted!.......2007-07-15

You want to ruin a album?- put the Neptunes in charge of making the beats. This is hands down is the worst album Common has made with the neptunes. I dont know what common was thinking but this isnt even hip-hop. The only good song is Come Close with Mary J. Blige. I tried to listen to the album but after the second time around I knew i was right the first time. The beats are some kind of phsycadelic sounds that could be appreciated by Wood Stock fans. If you dont believe me, sample the beats-I dont make this stuff up people. Ive been listening to Hip-Hop since the 80's so I should know the difference.

Eclectic Circus.......2007-06-11

This is still the same Common that gave you Resurrection, Like Water For Chocolate and Can I Borrow A Dollar. He's just rapping over far out but innovative production. Listen to Soul Power, Aquarius, Electric Wire Hustler Flower and New Wave. The same Common spitting dope rhymes, criticizing wack Mcs for being industry hoes. He's just spitting over unique production. I Got A Right To(featuring Pharrell) is another solid track and The Hustle is good too even though its sounds like a leftover from Like Water For Chocolate. I Am Music which features Jill Scott on the hook is as catchy as it is noteworthy as Common spits over a 30s beat. The only songs I didnt feel was Star 69 and Between Me, You And Liberation. The rest of the album was exceptional. All in all it was a great effort by Common and it shows his growth as an Mc as he pushes the envelope instead of remaining the same like every other MC. Standout Tracks: SOUL POWER, AQUARIUS, ELECTRIC WIRE HUSTLER FLOWER, THE HUSTLE, NEW WAVE, I GOT A RIGHT TO, I AM MUSIC, JIMI WAS A ROCK STAR. Bottom Line: If you're into a MCs who stay mundane day in day out then by all means stay away from this album but if your into an MC who raises the bar by being creative then this album is for you. Dont cheat yourself out of a great album by being close-minded. Creative and all its still a hip hop album. Kudos to Common!

This is a acquired taste type record. But Com gets props for pushing the artistic envelope musically and lyrically.

I'm writing a review of this cd and not the release of "Inside The Electric CircUs" without "The Headless Children" is the economic value of purchasing both albums at once.SOngs such as "Mantronic" lead you into the Sci Fi world of Blackie and Co.."Restless Gypsy"'s a wilD time..Sexy ("95 Nasty"'S a shout out to woman if yOu ask me..)Sexy cd,original solos and chord combinAtions (No McDonalds "Combo meal" i.e routine daily arrangements here..)Beautiful acoustic mixed with electric guitArs..BoB Saget left me as My Amazon fRiend,I want him back..So Anyways,Blackie and company do a fine job there.I guess I'll mention "The Headless Children" as well,although "The Electric Circus"'s enough to base a five star rating on.I enjoyed that album also.I recall it had more of a classic rock feel to it.Really..The "Electric Circus" cassette is what I base the reviews rAtings on.

fine metal for a bargain price.......2006-06-20

The price of this collection is excellent for two above-average metal albums. And one must remember that the music itself is the real value here, because the collection's packaging is ugly, the original albums' artwork is poorly represented, and the few lines of notes (brief description of Blackie's career and the band's fortunes through the eighties) are unsatisfying. The comments particularly on the two albums here (Inside the Electric Circus and The Headless Children) are misleading, apparently written by someone who did not actually listen to the albums.

The music itself, though, is another story. Inside the Electric Circus, W.A.S.P.'s third album, remains a mild disappointment after the excellence of the first two (W.A.S.P. and The Last Command), but it nonetheless bears repeated listening and holds up better, twenty-plus years after its initial release, than most of the other metal released at that same time. Generally, the songs are a bit shallow, and the hooks aren't as catchy as those on W.A.S.P.'s first two efforts, but it still rocks, and occasionally (for example, on "Restless Gypsy") the album brings the same kind of shivers as those inspired by earlier songs like "The Last Command" or "L.O.V.E. Machine."

The Headless Children, on the other hand, represents a long musical stride forward for Blackie and the band. In emotional tone and musical form, it builds on the foundation formed by earlier successes such as "Sleeping in the Fire" and "Widowmaker" and is easily the most lyrically mature and musically ambitious album that W.A.S.P. had produced to that point. Stressing politics and emotions over sex, and frequently eschewing the standard binary song structure in favor of more complex arrangements, The Headless Children is the rarest of metal beasts: the heavy, head-banging album that actually has things to say *without* becoming pretentious, boring, or preachy.

Short answer: This is a damned fine collection.

A lot of people thought W.A.S.P. was going soft with this album, but they were mistaken. One listen to 'Shoot from the Hip' was all you had to hear that Blackie was still on a rockin' rollin' rampage of sex, violence, and debauchery.

At the time this album was released, the PMRC was in it's full fury. Tipper Gore had targeted W.A.S.P. as one of the worst bands ever. Blackie had to bow a little and remove the periods in between the letters of "WASP" and this is the only album where this happens. With the next album "Live... in the Raw" the dots were back as drops of blood and have been there ever since. Also on this album Johny Rod from King Kobra came in to assume bass duty as Blackie went to the guitar for the first time on a W.A.S.P. album. Randy Piper, an original member, was now gone.

The opening is a bit corny, but you gotta realize that Blackie is the ringleader and afterall, someone needs to welcome you inside the madness, so it might as well be him.

The opening track is the title track and it's awesome. One of the best opening guitar riffs W.A.S.P. ever did. The song is full of energy, rampant, and exciting. The next tune, the cover of "I don't need no doctor" is simply awesome. '95 Nasty' should have been a hit, but it's still played live to this day.

Not everyone liked 'Mantronic', but I liked it. A bionic man with balls of steel is always a great idea for a tune. "King of Sodom and Gommarah", "Sweet Cheetah", and the closer "The Rock Rolls on" are also standouts.

This is a great album.

Common i wish i could help you out with this, but we all know what you are. you are hip hop. i admire the attempt to try and reinvent yourself, but with common's cadence he just didn't flow with the beats. There are a few tracks that are typical common, but not enough. Stick with One day it'll all make sense and like water for chocolate.

Common's Best CD since Resurrection.......2003-03-25

Common takes Hip Hop to a place it had yet to travel to, and he does it with intelligence and soul. This is by far his most daring work, and he hits more than he misses, but with tracks like "New Wave" and "I am Music", he pushes the limits and makes you ask yourself "What is Hip Hop?"

For the future of hip hop, pick up this CD.

The hottness.......but could have done better.......2003-03-11

Me and my boy was talkin' about Common's new album and identified the pros and cons of his latest work. We felt that some of his songs were still straight in the culture of hip hop but he didn't come as witty with his lyrics as he usually does. If you want something different to listen to...this album is for you. But if you are used to the usual underground rhythm he comes with and the crazy word play he displays than you may be disappointed. You have a couple of hot songs but it's no "Like Water For Chocolate." It's still hot and gives you something to look forward to after a long day at work or at school but it's something different that he put into that album. I enjoy it but he comes at me with a different spirit than before.

I'll admit I waited to review this album last, because I hadn't listened to it since the day I bought it; nearly three years ago. This was one album by W.A.S.P. that I was originally turned off by, due to the rather shoddy production. Recently, I put the album back in, and after two straight days of listening to it, I find myself appreciating it much more!

1. The Big Welcome - I liked this opening "skit." It was dark, and very much like something the band would do at the time. Fits the album perfectly! 4/5

2. Inside The Electric Circus - Very heavy stuff here! Classic 80's hair metal W.A.S.P. These guys just seem to have a blast rocking out. A do detect a hint of "The Last Command" in this song as well. Pretty cool. 4.5/5

3. I Don't Need No Doctor - This was one song that took me awhile to enjoy. Being a cover, I thought the band could have done a better job. Pretty heavy here, and a very catchy chorus. 3.5/5

4. 95-N.A.S.T.Y. - Perhaps the hit single from the album that almost everyone has heard. Very cool song. Again, relates directly to that 80's hair metal style that we all love! To me, the beginning sounded something like AC/DC would do in one of their songs! 4.5/5

5. Restless Gypsy - I think this is the under-rated gem of the album! It has an awesome beginning, sounding something similar to a Van halen tune. Kicks right into Blackie and his effortless vocals! Awesome track! 5/5

6. Shoot From The Hip - This song is another about pure rock n' roll! A fun song that just rocks in pure W.A.S.P. fashion! I didn't care for this song at first, but it will grow on you. 4/5

7. I'm Alive - Along with "Restless Gypsy" this song is another under-rated gem from this album. A heavy feel to it, it makes you want to rock out! One of those anthems that the band puts on each album to get the fans pumped! Again, a lot of "Last Command" feel to it as well. 5/5

8. Easy Living - Keeping with the heavy theme, the band again rocks out to another cover song. To me, it was a bit better than IDNND but the taste is within everyone's own personality. 4/5

9. Sweet Cheetah - Again, the band has that raw 80's energy about them. Lyrics are pretty cheesy, but the song has the W.A.S.P. feel and that's all that matters. 4/5

10. Mantronic - I like this song a lot. It has a lot of elements that show up in later works by the band. Again, the lyrics may not be the deepest, but the overall rock feel to it is amazing. The band plays strong and cohesively on this track as well! 4.5/5

11. King Of Sodom And Gomorrah - I have no idea what the title is about, but the song is pretty cool. This song has that "Animal" feel to it. the band just seems to have a lot of fun here and it makes for a killer song! 4.5/5

12 The Rock Rolls On - This is a pretty cool way to end the album on a technical standpoint. Classic W.A.S.P. Can you say "Blind In Texas?" Listen to that and you have this song! 4/5

13. Flesh And Fire (Bonus Track) - This song is awesome and I'm glad it made it as a bonus track on the album. Classic feel about heavy partying and rock n' roll! 4/5

14. D.B. Blues (Bonus Track) - This song is cool because its something you may not be used to hearing from W.A.S.P. has a bluesy tone to it, and the message is funny! 4/5

Overall, this album is a pretty good gem that many may under-rate. I almost made that mistake and wrote this one off. Don't! It is well worth it for any fan of W.A.S.P. and/or 80's metal!

Never could understand as to why some fans as well as critics never liked this third record release(1986)from W.A.S.P. Personally,I've always dug it AS much as I did their self-titled debut,that has become HARD to beat.Classic '80's metal here for the taking.Tracks that I've always been partial to are "95-Nasty",the head-riveting "Shoot From The Hip","Sweet Cheetah" as well as their two extremely well done covers,Humbie Pie's "I Don't Need No Doctor" and Uriah Heep's "Easy Living".Long live Blackie Lawless and crew!Essential.

Out of all the Wasp albums I gave the first four releases each five stars- Headless Children got four and the rest are all dissapointing.

This is the Wasp album that most frequently is in my cd player- and every song is great. No filler- songs like Mantronic, Sweet Cheatah, and Restless Gypsy are what metal is about. No politics, whining, or sappy love ballads, just music that brings back the good times- when music was about sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Thanks Blackie.

Inside the Electric Circus was W.A.S.P.'s third album in as many years. While there are many people who find Inside the Electric Circus to be a mixed bag, I personally find it to be one of WASP's finest albums. Songs like Inside the Electric Circus, 95 Nasty, Shoot from the Hip, I'm Alive and a couple of cover tunes I Don't Need No Doctor and Easy Livin' prove that this is one of WASP's best albums. Both 1984's WASP and 1985's The Last Command were good, but with Inside the Electric Circus, Blackie and the boys wrote a stronger batch of songs. Side 1 is flawless, and the second side is almost as strong. WASP are one of those great underated bands.

This was originally a Factory Records compilation, long out of print, then reissued on CD (and it seems to be out of print again). Basically, it's a handful of live recordings from the last shows at the Electric Circus, a Manchester club from the 70's. Some of the bands, such as the Drones, sound dated and boring, but the Buzzcocks' "Time's Up" is fantastic; the Fall contributed two solid performances ("Stepping Out" and "Last Orders"); Steel Pulse ("Ku Klux Klan") show that reggae doesn't have to come from Jamaica to be good; and John Cooper Clarke's wacky beatnik-style poetry still works. It's a shame that the Joy Division track, "At A Later Date," is not one of their more memorable efforts.

If you are a Buzzcocks fan, you really need to hear the version of "Time's Up" on here. It's definitely the highlight of this album.
