This (possibly) final installment in the Garcia/Grisman series leans heavily on a country music repertoire, as the pair tackles tracks by Jimmie Rodgers, Merle Travis (a jazzed-up "Nine Pound Hammer"), George Jones, Mel Tillis (a bluesy, gently shuffling "I Ain't Never"), and Freddie Hart. They also make detours into the realms of traditional folk, reggae (Jimmy Cliff's "Sittin' Here in Limbo"), soul (Garcia's passionate run through James Brown's "I'll Go Crazy" gets an E for effort), and Bob Dylan (a delightfully understated "Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest"). Sure, Garcia's vocal cords might have seen better days, but you can never find fault with his heartfelt, emotionally captivating singing. The picking here is tasteful and low-key, and the overall result is a warm, relaxed stroll through the duo's many musical influences. --Marc Greilsamer

Very surprised.......2007-06-21

This CD is great! I've been a Garcia/Grisman fan for a while, but never got around to buying this disc. I put off buying it when it came out, primarily because of negative reviews here. One review called it "wildly uneven" and "scraping the bottom of the barrel", which made me think Grisman was just trying to make a buck.

In my opinion, this is one of the best discs of the duo that's been released. Jerry's singing is strong throughout, and the song selection is eclectic, but very nice. The Bob Dylan cover is worth the price alone. I just wish I had bought this when it came out.

Fun and Awesome.......2007-05-16

I hate to admit it but I never was a dead head. This CD was recommended to me when I bought my son a mandolin. I can't believe I didn't hear it before now. Grisman and Garcia are awesome. The tunes are traditional bluegrass but lively and fun. Garcia's singing is all Jerry. And you just want to get up and dance. I highly recommend it.

All I can say is that this album is very dear to my heart now. I was already in love with a few of the obvious albums when I ran across this one. I love it!!!

Another swell Grisman-Garcia album.......2004-09-03

Another collection of nice, relaxed, acoustic duets, culled from the many hours of informal jam sessions that these two shaggy roots music old-timers held over the years. Jerry croons country oldies like the George Jones classic, "Take Me" and Merle Travis's "Dark As A Dungeon" and "Nine Pound Hammer," reggae tunes like "Sitting Here In Limbo" and several traditional songs, which help anchor the album's old-timey sound. The sedate, laid-back version of Bob Dylan's epic "Ballad Of Frankie Lee And Judas Priest" is a highlight, though, honestly, there's no weak link to be heard on this album. These performances are understated and sincere, and though Grisman may have mined his archives several times for similar material, he is certainly not scraping the bottom of the barrel here... Not at all!

not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Tina Novak is one of today's many talented artists that have popped out of the Tampa based girl group-The Entertainment Review. Fellow artists Chole, Willa Ford, Kaci, and girl groups Indian Summer and the artists formally known as PYT. Tina is 23 and form Temple Terr-near Tampa. She has an amazingly powerful voice and is great in concert! Her first single "Been Around The World" is a catchy fun summer song, however does not capture the true uniquness of her voice. Tina is truly amazing and is going places pick up this great single and help her on her way!

This song is so awesome!! "Daft Punk" was so creative in the production of this song. The way that they blend the different sounds together in the beginning is something so different from any other songs. If this song was playing at a club, it would definitely give you an adrenaline rush!! ; )

Something about this song is so infectious. Basically a filtered bassline with the cutoff raising slowly until you pop into the juice of the song; a house loop with a vocoded "around the world" chant. It sounds like a little robot man singing with a nice bumpy house track pitter-pattering in the background.

I had heard Tina Novak's "Been Around the World" a few times on an Internet radio station I listen to and I enjoyed the uptempo style. My wife teaches modern dance as a second job and I figured that this CD would be great for her, especially her younger kids as there would surely be some more danceable tunes on the CD. I had especially high hopes for this CD and couldn't wait to give it to my wife as she's always looking for songs with a nice tempo/rythm to choreograph new dances to.

To my dismay, aside from the first track, "Been Around the World", the rest of the tracks simply meld into a mixture of indistinguishable, over mixed, unoriginal, booooooring tunes. Honestly, aside from the first track, if you had to guess who was on the rest of the tracks, you could literally pick from a dozen "artists" that have the same exact, teen-pop sound. In addition, the upbeat, high tempo flavor of the first track is lost in all of the other tracks that just seem to drone.

This CD really deserves less than 1 star (1/14, or .07 stars) for the single good track on the CD. Ms. Novak seems to be talented, but her producers are second-rate for coming up with a debut album with only *one* solid track.

SUMMER TIME FUN.......2003-05-22

This is a great album for the summer. It's good for driving or have fun in the sun. They're a bunch of uptempo/sing-a-long songs.

Been Around the World Album.......2002-09-06

Having seen Tina Novak perform at a mall concert I just had to get her cd. She has a beautiful and strong voice. While Been Around the World was the single released in the U.S. you really need to hear the other songs on this cd. My favorites being: Let's Go, Uh Oh, Can't Deal Without Your Love, Still and Salacious. You will find yourself humming these songs all day. They make you feel good.

Been Around the World...but new to our faces........2002-08-29

If you hear the word "She'ksphere" you might think of the writter, but this She'ksphere hangs out with the thugs and gets women in thongs. It wouldn't surprize me if Tina Novak was one of those beautiful woman because by seeing her picture you pray she's not just a pretty face. The first song "Been Around the World"takes a small town groove to a new level. Its lyrics are ones you can just hear a girl who is "bein' played" speak so fluently. The CD's uptempo songs are excellent ("Uh Oh", Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda", "Can't Deal Without Your Love") with the production and sound f-x of 2002 and sultry vibes from Ms. Novak. The highlight of the album is with two songs..."Salacious" and "Still". If "Salacious" won't get your feet moving and booty shakin you must be dead. "Still" is that slow groove that you can take a nap to or take a cruise with next to the ocean. Other very soothing and relacing songs are "Summertime" and "Magic". Tina Novak's first single "Been Around the World" probably didn't take off the way she wanted, but I'm glad I caught onto this hottie because she is one NOT to miss.

i give this song 5 stars. i like how it was smooth and sexually put together with a mellow beat of sound. the sexy lyrics along with the artist featured (carl thomas) who had not yet
been released but was given a chance to do his thang on the vocal cords. this is an all time classic for puffy and his remixes and you cannot forget about the video that was created for this song, beautiful. this song was created at a perfect time in my life where it felt good to here it. it also bring back alot of good memories. this single was released in 1997 with little play making it out to feel as if it had been released as a limited addition track. it was hardly ever played on the radio, the video had air-play but not enough. now, not even a throw-back play at it , so what's up. anyway, it's good to be able to grab this song and have it for my own listening studies. it was well put together lyrically and soundly sought out making it capable to slapp(play really loud with a large supply of woofers)in my 2000 limited tahoe. two fingers up to the production crew for this one and only. ratings from me on this are high on a continuous note. looking forward to hearing more music like this, if not from others may it be from this production crew because of the difference this one crew made of sound through this one song.

Great Single.......2001-06-13

Great singles for only having two songs, the edited rock version of the Benjamins, and the LP version of Been Around the World. I am not exactly the biggest fan of Puffy, but the single is Cheap and a good buy for anyone. The cover even looks pretty good. Enjoy it!
