This audio companion to a Showtime special presents a kind of ladies' night of humor with comics Miss Laura Hayes from Martin, Adele Givens and Mo'nique from The Parkers, and Sommore from The Hughleys. Each runs through an uncensored, often hilarious litany of true-life pitfalls, from sex (Sommore's "Men Over 30"), drugs (Hayes's "Paranoid Roommate"), to politics and sex (Mo'nique's "The President"). None of the women mince words, so adults should heed the parental advisory sticker. The disc is padded with smooth R&B tracks from Gladys Knight and Patti Labelle, who pulls out all the stops for Diane Warren's slinky "Call Me Gone." The remix of "I Can Tell" by Monifah, featuring Murphy Lee of the St. Lunatics, is a solid hip-hop bomb that slyly incorporates the Waitresses' new wave anthem "I Know What Boys Like" into the groove. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars SWEET SWEET SWEET POTATO Q'S.......2006-03-19

This is the most uplifting music I've ever heard. If you're having one of those burdensome days, fire this up and see how fast you begin to laugh. Finally we (ladies) have one on the men. I've ordered for all my closest sisters/daughters/friends. If you take life seriously, don't buy it. Otherwise, order it and enjoy. I'd really rate it 5+.

5 out of 5 stars I want to see this on Broadway!!.......2005-12-31

This CD had me laughing and dancing and singing along the very first time I listened to it. Now I want to see it on Broadway -- Sweet Potato Queens' Big-As Broadway Review! It did seem like two tracks (I Don't Want Someone Like You and Give Me a Chance) were out of place here. They are good torch songs but don't match the rollicking, happy-in-my-own-skin attitude of the other tracks. I know I'll be buying other CDs from this performer.

5 out of 5 stars As Much Fun As You Can Legally Have.......2003-11-27

Kacey Jones, whether "live" or on CD is about as much fun as you can have without getting arrested ! I bought this CD on a whim and enjoyed it immediately. By a strange twist of fate, the Nashville-based singer / songwriter / humorist / producer / arranger was appearing in my area within days of purchasing the CD. Her live show was a blast ! Kacey has a great sense of humor, although she can turn out a great "serious" tune equally well. Her arrangements cover many different styles of music, so there's a little something to please many different tastes. I've since acquired all of her CDs and recommend anything she puts out. If Kacey records it, I'll buy it ! Check out her website at: www.KaceyJones.com for more info on this very, very funny and talented performer.

4 out of 5 stars Parodies and then some...........2003-02-17

After a few charting singles, the notable one being the number one "Purple People Eater", in 1962 Sheb Wooley embarked on a career of doing parodies of hit records under the moniker Ben Colder. Five of these novelty tunes made it into the top-100 during the 60's. This collection from Bear Family Records in Germany gathers up many of these recordings in this 28-track compilation. The remarkable feature here though, is the inclusion of the hit records upon which each of these parodies are based. So, while this gathering of Ben Colder's tracks is a welcome first appearance for most of these tunes, this piece also stands alone as a collection of well-known country hit singles. Within the 28 tracks are such blockbuster tunes as Johnny Preston's "Running Bear", Jimmy Dean's "Big Bad John" and Charlie Rich's "Behind Closed Doors" each worked over as "Running Bare", "Big Sweet John" and "Behind Cloe's Door". As a collection of Colder's hits, this is not totally comprehensive however, in that one of the charting, albeit barely, singles, "Still No. 2", is missing, possibly due to licensing problems. Nevertheless this is the first legitimate collection of Colder's original recordings. NB: beware a CD, "22 Hits of Sheb Wooley....", a collection of dodgy rerecordings of these Colder tunes. As expected with Bear Family products, this piece is luxuriously produced with a massive 56-page(!) liner notes booklet with pics, backround notes and lyrics. Sound quality is mostly top-notch with most tracks in stereo leaving 2,3,13,21,23,25 in mono. While the purpose here is to anthologize Colder's string of novelty parodies, this piece has as much appeal in its inclusion of the hits on which these novelty tunes are based.

5 out of 5 stars LAUGH OUT-LOUD HILARIOUS!.......2007-07-23

While it's true that all 4 women use alot of 'foul language', it's clearly not just thrown-in for effect. Rather, I believe each of the ladies probably would tell the same stories in the same way (and using the same 4-letter words) regardless of the circumstance or audience. That said, this is easily one of my TOP 5 comedy albums EVER! The ladies are merciless in their evaluation of men, society, racism, drugs and the everyday twists & turns in life. As other Amazon reviewers mentioned, I agree that Mo'Nique turned-in the least enchanting of the four performances included (and I, too, bought the disc initially on her name). However, even her relatively weak turn at the mic produces out-loud laughter in me, and that's after owning it for over 2 years and playing the thing so often I'm surprised it has any life left in it.

As for the other 3 ladies: Initially, my favorite was Adele Givens, (her bit on Whitney Houston & Bobby Brown left me laughing on the floor & helpless), then it was Miss Laura Hayes- whose Crack-Roommate story has to be considered a comedy classic. Ultimately, though, my vote for #1 is SOMMORE. Though I'd never heard of her before buying this CD, I'm now a lifelong fan. Sine this show, she's turned in performances in the Ice Cube "Fridays" movies, among others. But after seeing TQofC, it's clear that Hollywood has yet to realize the full-potential of SOMMORE. She''s just so damn honest, and sees humor in any situation. Hell, I even bought that lousy "Soul Plane" movie (albeit a 'Used' copy) to catch her performance. BTW, Mo'Nique is also in Soul Plane, and while she's incredibly funny as a horny airport security guard, I cannot, would not recommend that stinker of a movie.

But back to TQofC: My #1 lady SOMMMORE (who makes a reference at the start of her act to having just gotten out of jail) makes observations about men, dating, black people & the police, and the male sex organ which are masterfully funny, andmany of her stories are clearlyl true-to-life. And while it's a sad commentary on racism i nthis counttry that ()as Sommore says), "Black people don't call the Police... we call our Cousins" it's also an incredibly funny bit. I should also add that some men may feel a bit uncomfortable by her take on them, particularly those men who are most happy to hear a woman say that size doesn't matter (Sommore has little use for the underendowed)!

I've read many critics' reviews of TQofC, mostly unfavorable, which made it seem as though this was a cheap knock-off of The Kings of Comedy. I say, NOT TRUE. I've seen both many times, and believe me, the men don't have a thing on these ladies. Even the more 'dated' sketches (like Mo'Nique's take on the Clinton-Lewinsky affair) are still funny to this day. So if you're: a) not easily offended by so-called "bad" language; b) not a seriously underendowed male; and c) have no sense of humor, then I say BUY THIS DISC NOW! It's one helluva deal, at this price especially, and you won't regret it. It's a ton of laughs for a low, low price.

5 out of 5 stars An awsome concert.......2003-04-07

I listened to this for two weeks straight when I bought it. I though I woudn't like one or two of the ladies, but I ended up enjoying them all. The one I thought I'd like the most, Mo' Nique, actually had the weakest performance, IMHO. Just awesome.

4 out of 5 stars African American women are always women.......2001-07-17

They just seem to have an edge that no one else touches on. Although it is rather raunchy the comedy is real from begginng to end. Towards the middle they play out the whole noodle thing. I first saw Kings of Comedy and then watched this too. The video does a better job of helping you understand all the comedy but it is still worth it. I would pay full price for this but if you can get it for less why not?
