Wondrous gentle music.......2007-01-10

I first saw Isabel on an SBS programme and was amazed at the glorious sounds she was producing. This album is great, relaxing, full of strength and beauty. My only word of caution would be that unless you are in the right mood it can sound a bit repetitive by the time you get to the end of the album. However, I am very glad that I bought it.

Growing up in the Armenian church, it was impossible not to be powerfully moved by the music. Isabel Bayrakdarian was clearly also moved in the same way. Her singing is so flawless, yet it conveys the depths of her spiritual feelings. It is wonderful that people who have not been exposed to this music will have a chance to experience its power and beauty.

Divinely Joyous.......2005-09-28

Isabel Bayrakdarian is a certified classical music diva today, an excellent Mozartian, Handelian, songs and lieder recitalist and overall a very bright star in the current line-up of young sopranos. And this is how she started her recorded career- with a disc of Armenian liturgical music.
For me it is actually very refreshing to listen to songs in language that I don't understand at all- and a nice break from the usual Latin, German, and my native ones- but at the same time, knowing that they are sung by someone who understands the texts and has a spiritual connection to them is a nice bonus. (And if you want to explore the meaning behind the sounds, the original Armenian texts and translations are included in the CD booklet...) It's also a new musical experience to my ears- I am used to certain melismatic forms of Indian music, and Soeur Marie Keyrouz records of Byzantine chants, yet this music still sounds quite exotic to me. And, at all times, very beautiful.
Like Gregorian chant in its pure form, it would get somewhat monotonous, if it wasn't for Bayrakdarian's heartfelt delivery. I find that the opening song is my favourite and often end up listening to it over and over again, but the whole album is very addictive. Not all the songs have the same joyous rapture feel- some are melancholy tinged, some are both at the same time. You need to listen to this music to appreciate its strange charms. It's beautiful and deeply spiritual, all in one. It is certainly Sacred Joy for my ears.

Breathtaking!!!.......2002-08-14

This is a stunning recording. Isabel Bayrakdarian's voice is a wonderful clear soprano, rich and warm throughout its range and free of any roughness. Her long familiarity with this repertoire lets her shape each phrase beautifully and, apparently, effortlessly.

The disk derives from a concert that took place in Toronto in September, 2001 commemorating 1700 years of Christianity in Armenia. It consists of 18 pieces of liturgical music. In some Bayrakdarian sings a capella, but in most she is supported by a chamber orchestra. One is aware that this is not western music, but the modes in which it is written are just unusual enough to European ears to be a little exotic while remaining entirely accessible. It's not quite melodic, but not quite chant either. Bayrakdarian's melismas are always sensitive and subtle. The whole effect is soaring, haunting, ethereal, transporting, utterly wonderful.

This is a desert island disk for sure.

First-off how old is this cat? Yo da Album wuz hot. Maceo wuz suprizingly wise. Usually young ballaz wanna talk about hoes and bulls*it. Compared to Gucci Mane(check his cd "Trap House") his fellow Big Cat Records lable counterpart, he really holds his own(he's actually better). Bottom line, Maceo Is Talented and a real dude so buy Straight Out da Pot.

I Expected Better!.......2006-02-20

When I first heard "Nextel Chirp" I thought to myself, "Man, that has to be a fire album." Boy, was I wrong. I am not going to say that some of the tracks didn't catch my attention, but overall I was disappointed. I just was not feeling his approach. There isn't anything in this album that would set him apart from other rappers other than his song "Nextel Chirp". Beat wise, I was not feeling a majority of his songs, and lyrically I wasn't feeling anything. I honestly would not suggest buying this album. You'd be better off burning the few banging tracks he has to offer than wasting your money.

Surprisingly good album.......2005-12-16

Most people know Maceo for his big singles, "Nextel Chirp" and "Ho Sit Down." However if you are expecting just another generic crunk sound from an Atlanta native, you will be in for a surprise. Although he's not even 20, he has legit talent. The songs that really got my attention were the slow, emotional songs, "The Struggle" and "God's Soldier", which are amazing tracks that display Maceo's musical diversity. "So Get High", which is very reminiscent of Bone Thugs, is a great smoking song and "Mind Frame", "Ladies and Gentleman", and the intro "Sraight out da Pot" are nice riding songs. A few of the songs are filler but don't sleep on this guy, get this now.

Mr. Coop is a lyricist, and his music jam's. but i was dissapointed by this cd. poisonous game and game still deadly are much better cd's. this cd has at beast 5 jams on it, the rest are album fillers. Overall coop is still a hell of a rapper and still holdin it down.

Wonderfully fine performance.......2004-10-10

This is one opera I have been searching for for a very long time. I read about it in a book about Sullivan. Of course, when they wrote of the opera, they showed the scene, in drawing, where Rebecca informs Ivanhoe of the battle with the Black Knight. The drawing (based on the actual performance when it premiered) grabbed my attention completely. I just wondered what this composer could do with real opera (I loved his operettas completely, and they showed quite often Sullivan was quite capable of deep emotional pathose, even if in the end he was spoofing it more than reflecting it).

Well, all the years of searching and waiting to know were not a waste. Firstly, I have never been able to locate a score of this work (as I have done with many ancient operas or forgotten ones), so I was just as in the dark as anyone else as to what to expect. I was incredibly surprised, not to mention, thrilled with the results. No, Sullivan is no Wagner, nor is he even Verdi, but he is wonderfully beautiful in his own right. Why this work has not entered into the opera houses, I have no clue, excepting maybe because it is English opera, which never does well. Speaking of "ENGLISH OPERA", here we have a recording where for the most part we CAN understand the words (a thing I never seem to find in professional recordings of English opera, or American opera; they may as well sing in gibberish, for that is exactly what it sounds like -- perhaps the composers have no clue what works in their own language?). The performers, as we know, are not professionals, but rather semi-professionals. There are some uneven performances, and sometimes the characters are not quite as developed as one would like, there are even times the orchestra sounds like it lost the beat (but this is EXTREMELY RARE), the sound quality of the recording is OK, but nothing stellar, however, it is not bad either. Yet, in spite of these drawbacks, we CAN and DO understand the words, and for once a rather strange sounding English libretto sounds natural and unforced with stupid poetry that really leaves you laughing. These wonderfully dedicated performers, no matter their individual difficulties, give us a wonderfully vivid performance where we can finally understand the opera (like all our Italian friends do when Italian opera is sung for them). That was such a treat for me, to finally actually understand the words of opera sung in my own language.

What makes this opera such a thrill, at least for me, is the natural fall of the words and the music, especially in the recitatives. Unlike most English opera where the musical line sounds completely foreign to the natural lilt of the words, Sullivan has an uncanny way of writing lines, melodies, and recitatives that flow naturally from the language itself. That was a really exciting experience to endure. For once, I didn't wish that someone would teach the composers to listen to the flow of English to gain an insight into melody. Maybe it was all those operettas that he wrote prior to this "serios opera" that taught him what he knew, or maybe, he just had a good ear for his own language and enough sense to know that trying to graft Italian or German musical idioms onto things just wasn't the correct choice.

Is it a great work? Well, no, it will never get into the record books as a perfect opera, nor will it shove Mozart or Wagner off the stage, but it is really quite good just the same. Even with all the flaws this recording has, I am so glad it is out there so I could at last hear what music fleshed out that old drawing I saw in a book all those years ago. Though Sullivan's music is not anywhere near as dramatic as one may imagine it should be, it fits well with the scene and the over all concept of the work.

I really recommend this recording, for it, at least for now, is the only one we have (and if they make a professional one, I really hope they screen the singers well, no big names if they can't sing English so we can understand it; Sullivan, as with Wagner, you MUST understand the words or the meaning is completely lost). The entire recording is really quite enjoyable, and it doesn't disappoint.

If you are interested in Arthur Sullivan's Music without Gilbert, this is one of the works you should have in your collection. Unfortunately the quality of the performance is inconsistent. The orchestra is at times good, at others sloppy. The soloists are also of varying quality. This is, after all, a recording by a semi-professional group. That said, if you are willing to accept the flaws, this is currently the only version on disc. Perhaps someday the BBC will record a version, as they did with Sullivan's "Rose of Persia". In the current recording, the most pleasing selections are: The Act 3 Scene 2 ensemble "Look where thy moody father walks apart", Friar Tuck's rollicking "Ho, Jolly Jenkin", The Templar's passionate scene "Woo thou thy snowflake", and Rebecca's evocative aria "Lord of our chosen race". Not all it could be, but it's all we've got.

Stravinski done right.......2006-07-07

I have owned this CD (but issued as EMI Eminence) for many years and was surprised to see no reviews. Mackerras is not the name that pops to mind when someone says "Stravinski"; it is either Monteux or Stravinski himself. This is Mackerras and the London SO from 1987. Monteux was principal conductor at London 1961-64. This CD shows that 20 years later the London SO had not forgot how it was done. I prefer this to Stravinki's Columbia recordings and to Monteux's mono recording for Philips. I know you are skeptical; all I can say is that it will not cost you much to prove me wrong! What a pity it cannot be re-released on SACD (EMI has still not licensed DSD). For your trouble, you will also get the fabulous "fireworks" that Stravinski wrote for his teacher Rimski. Not enough? Mackerras ends the CD with two of the best things Stravinski wrote: "circus polka" (the ballet for a young elephant) and "greeting prelude" (Stravinski's serial take on happy birthday to you for the 80-year-old Monteux). OK, I admit that 40 minutes is kind of slim for a CD these days, but you will not be short-changed. For once, EMI actually gets the sound right.

The best christian rep album up to date........2006-01-12

I have listened to a lot of Christian rep CD and this is truly the best one I have in my collection. It is hard to find good message with grate music but this album got it. Too bad Mr. Real doesn't have any new albums out after this one.

great music i learned about him off of the muzik ta ride 2- #4 tape and he is an excellent artist. i especially like the duet betweet him and Ayeesha. Grapetree has some of the best artist and he is one of them.this tape is one of the best ;west side flavor.

Mr. Real is the best Christian Rapper ever! He takes god-sent lyrics and Dr. Dre-style music and puts them together. 'A Chosen One' features 17 rad gangsta-style tracks, which were barely fit onto one disc. Hiring Brian "Mr. Real" Hill onto the grapetree record label was grapetree president Knolly William's best move ever! The best tracks are 'World Wide', 'We Bring Tha', and 'Do Yo Dance'. I strongly suggest you buy this awesome album; it's definetely worth your money!

JAZZ & COCKTAILS, the new CD from singer Byron Motley, is a beautifully chosen collection that pairs some of the best-known standards with lesser-heard jazz pearls, performed by one of the most arresting voices in popular music today. Byron's smooth voice and style harks back to the swingin' greats of earlier decades like Nat King Cole, Billy Eckstein, Jimmy Scott, Johnny Mathis, and Tony Bennett.

The musical gems in JAZZ & COCKTAILS features Byron fully in command of his artistry, emoting the lyrical and musical expression of each crafty melody with ease. It is clear that Byron's approach to these songs is unique, imaginative and passionate.

An accomplished songwriter in his own right, Byron opted not to include any originals on JAZZ & COCKTAILS. "I really wanted to do a `standards album', mainly because this is music that I love, and also because I saw a huge void in the fact that no other African-American male vocalist is doing this type of music. These songs are timeless as are the contributions of artists like Nat Cole and Johnny Mathis, and I want to help keep that rich tradition alive".

Jazz & Cocktails is great. With a vocal mixture combining the sass of Jackie Wilson, the jive of Louis Jordan, and the vulnerability (a chick magnet) of Smokey Robinson, Byron Motley displays creativity, ingenuity, and dexterity on a swinging and ultra-hip set of standards and dreamy ballads. On the latter, Motley is delicate and breathy with the lyrics, as on "June Night" and "I Wish I Knew."

He's also willing to take chances on well known favorites: on "Lush Life," he weaves his weary reflections with a simple accordion and tenor background. A mere piano and harmonica provide the only backdrop on the lonely "These Foolish Things," and "My Foolish Heart" is a sublime conversation with guitar and piano providing support. All throughout, Motley is a master.

On the uptempo numbers, he's just as strong. Creatively slipping and weaving through a double-time waltz rendition of "Oh, My Lover" and mixing in Kenton's original vocal and band chorus on "And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine," Motley shows excellent taste, pacing, and delivery. On the full band toe tappers like "Big City" and "I Told Ya I Love Ya," he exudes excellent humor. Motley's delivered a recording worthy of admiration in Jazz & Cocktails.
