Album Description

Anyone who listened to the Soul Survivor II instrumentals, know that beneath the surface of the talented, featured MC's and vocalists were gems so jazz and melodic they could have stood alone. For producers like Pete, consolidating their libraries of beats to 13 tracks for a full length is not easy. Too often producers are marginalized to the backdrop and their vast catalogs are rarely unearthed to the public.

Taken from the Soul Survivor II sessions, The Surviving Elements allows a window into Pete's process and gives listeners a chance to indulge in his musicality. Like Petestrumentals, The Surviving Elements is a testament to Pete Rock's love of the groove; a homage to a craft endangered by saturation, sample clearance legislation and pop crossover appropriation. Lean back, rhyme over it and spread the word!

5 out of 5 stars ain't that lovin, pete.......2006-09-16

Only Pete Rock would have the wherewithal to chop up my favorite Johnnie Taylor song into a rugged banger. There's also some obvious uses of Herbie Hancock and Curtis Mayfield (among others ;), which might explain why this went out of print so quick. In fact, I've heard Pete discredit this release as done behind his back. But still, it is one of the dopest records of all-time, even better than the hallowed Petestruments (which you can't even get with my favorite track, "what you waitin for" anymore). Tru headz who really understand beatsmithery need only apply. Get this before they really jack up the used prices, spark a spliff, and work on your turns or/and rhymes. Modern art.

4 out of 5 stars The boy wonder does it again..........2006-06-03

This CD is definitly one of my favorite top 10 instrumental cd's of all time...now i'm gonna throw pete rock fans for a loop.. I recently heard "you remind me" being ripped up lyrically by cl smooth on a promo for cl's new cd "american me". Please if anyone has this "HIT", please send to me at heatmyser1975@yahoo.com ---- Peace and Blessings..RB3

5 out of 5 stars For Pete's sake dammit!.......2006-01-05

The guy should have his hands bronzed.

From listening to the beats I can only come up with one conclusion why these masterful tracks were not used...the beats are too complex for most rappers to flow over. They are just another level. The drum track in Pimp Strut and the bassline in Fairground are all you need to hear to understand why Pete is the Chocolate Boy Wonder.

Yeah, pick up Petestrumentals as well.

5 out of 5 stars STRICTLY FOR THE CITY..........2005-10-09

Pete Rock has been one of my favorite producers ever since he made "Mecca & The Soul Brother" with C.L. Smooth. Personally, to me he's Hip-Hop's answer to Miles Davis. With "Surviving Elements", it only helps prove my point. Building off of the strides of "Petestrumentals", here's an album with a whole array of different vibes. "You Remind Me" is the proper way to freak an Al Green sample and the later tracks, such as "Hop, Skip & Jump" and "(Pimp)Strut" have a soul reminiscient of those old 80's joints blasting at block parties. The light-headed feel of "Smoking Room Only" gives me the feeling of soaring over the city in the evening. "Midnight and You" is the definitive beat to play during a late night on the stoop with your peoples (real introspective), followed up to drive it home with "Stormy Weather", a quiet storm joint. The banger of the album is "U Are What U Are", very reminiscient of when PR was still with CL. And the album closes out with, "Intrigue", a somber melody with a feel that there is still more to come...

5 out of 5 stars LONG LIVE THE CHOCOLATE BOY WONDER!!!!!.......2005-08-06

Product Description

D-Block's Styles P is at it again. After being far too patient with the release of "Time Is Money", Styles is taking no time to feed his hungry fans more of his verbals, this time in the form of a brand new joint "The Ghost Sessions." Though he was born in Corona, Queens, the Styles family soon relocated to Yonkers, where Styles came up with Jadakiss, Sheek Louch and the whole D-Block/Lox crew. Eventually the crew caught the ear of Bad Boy Records. After some incredible guest shots, 1998 finally saw The Lox drop "Money, Power & Respect", which gained them a little bit of each. Jada may have released a solo record first, but Styles has gone it on his own more than a few times too, starting with "A Gangster and a Gentleman" in 2002. Since then he's dropped plenty of mixtapes, appeared on every D-Block record and guested with the likes of Ghostface Killah and DMX. One of his most notorious guest appearances was on "Kiss Your Ass Goodbye" from Sheek Louch's "After Taxes", a cut that merely touched upon the on going D-Block beef with 50 and G Unit. On "The Ghost Sessions" Styles is joined by his D-Block crew and of course there are a few big surprises.

4 out of 5 stars Styles is back.......2007-06-30

Just half a year after his "Time is Money" album dropped, Stlyes returns with yet another good street album. It seems as though teh Ghost has been the busiest man in D-Block lately dropping various albums and mixtapes while Sheek has been dropping a few things here and there and Jadakiss has been real quiet lately, Styles holds downt he fort. With 12 songs (and 3 Rock remixes) it isn't the longest album but it's still nice. Guests are on about half the songs and are some great appearances as well, some of the finer rappers int he underground scene are on here. Of the 12 songs, 1 is almost a classic, 3 are ok and the other 8a re good (the 3 rock remixes are all ok). Production is noce as well. Street Radio does 6 songs, Fizzy Womack of M.O.P. and Large professor each do 2 songs, and J Waxx Garfield and Emile each do 1, Ill Will Fulton does the 3 rock remixes. A nice album for fans of D-Block or real street gutter rap to have.

this album has great production, the lyrics are outta control, and the collabs are only made in dreams. if this was well promoted, this would've been a big hit with the mainstream. nonetheless, its the Ghost's best album to date and i'd say a classic... def going to b on my year end best album list.
BUY THIS ALBUM! if u never bought any Styles P album and you love the mixtapes, this is the album to own!!!

4 out of 5 stars What Time Is Money should've been?.......2007-05-25

Now that Styles P is completely in charge of his recordings on Koch record, he delivers his third album following his sophomore effort on Interscope only 7 months ago. Although Styles P was recognized as a major-label artist before, he always kept his head in the underground scene, and The Ghost Sessions is a perfect example of this. With guest appearances by the likes of AZ, Kool G. Rap, Cormega, and Joell Ortiz, and production provided by Large Professor, among others, The Ghost Sessions is an ultimately dope release from Styles, even if certain aspects of it may seem like a bootleg.

Perhaps being a bootleg is the best format this album could've went in, though. The strictly underground feel of it differs greatly from Time Is Money, and Styles sounds much more comfortable in this type of enviorment; he's always been a street-rapper, and this is where his strength is at its pinnacle. Possessing one of the grittiest voices in the game, a above-average vocabulary, and a grimey, yet intoxicating flow, Styles feels right at home on tracks like the opener featuring AZ, where both of these underrated New York legends deliver dope verses over a tight verse by Large Professor. The following track, "**** The Police," may possess one of the most overused titles and subjects in the rap game, but Styles still manages to carry the track with his skill. "No Remorse" with D-Block member J-Hood is quite tight, supported by an eerie backdrop, and dope verses from both of the New York natives.

"Come One, Come All" produced by M.O.P.'s Fizzy Womack(Lil' Fame), is a dope track featuring none other than Kool G. Rap. Kool G's verse is ill as expected, but Styles more than holds his own against the hip-hop heavyweight. Fizzy also produced the track succeeding this, Hold On, featuring Jay Rush; Styles rips through this soulful track with ill verses, and Styles drops some of the street-knowledge he's become famous for. Rush provides an infectious chorus, crooning powerfully over the lush backgrounds provided for him. "Frustration" is another Street Radio produced track, who supplied Styles with quite a few ill beats on this album; Frustration is no exception. Following his usual trapped-in-the-ghetto format, Styles manages to continue shining on this track, even if it isn't as strong as some of the songs that preceeded it.

Pain feels like what Styles' Time Is Money track, Fire & Pain, was aiming for; it succeeds where that track failed, most likely thanks to this song lacking a Sizzla hook. Bradd Marquis provides a biting chorus, that helps evevate this track as one of the stand-outs on the album. "The Struggle," produced by Large Prof once again, leads me to believe that these two have incredible chemistry. An entire album done by Paniro and Extra P could certainly be a banger, and I hope those two have thought of the possibility after their ill concoctions on this album. Poor Folk presents the two down-to-earth emcees, Styles and Joell Ortiz, over a piano driven beat from Street Radio. Although I think Joell's new album was rather overrated, he performs well enough on this track, even if Styles does manage to outshine him.

The rest of the album is largely similar in vein to the tracks I've reviewed; Styles rarely strays away from the streets, but it works for him. Although he can drop knowledge quite frequently, and he does have a conscience, he's still dead-set on blowing his adversaries outta their G-Unit sneakers. If you want an album that's dope lyrically, and heavily influenced by the thug lifestyle, Styles P's Ghost Sessions is for you. He's not as much the thinking man's gangster as he was on a Gangster And A Gentleman or Time Is Money, but he still manages to release an ill album that'll more than satisfy his fans and newcomers alike. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Solid offering of dub for the masses.......2002-03-02

This isn't a hardcore old-school set of dub, but it's a great place to start. Tracks put together by some heavy electronic music cats with dub-mindedness, there's more than enough good stuff on here worth your dollar. Some of it isn't as mindful of tradition as I'd have liked, but the takes are fresh, and entertaining all around. A great CD for mood, venues and just hanging out.

5 out of 5 stars Another Amazing title by Guidance Recordings.......2002-01-15

Wow, this one is even better than the 1st! Parts of it distinctly sound like Tosca's Opera, while other parts are more reminiscent of K & D. Overall a very smooth and chillin sound, that definetely keeps me coming back. Great atmospheric music, and good pumped up, too.

5 out of 5 stars High Fidelity indeed..........2002-01-13

Speaking of the genre, this one really hits the spot.
Keeping up the reputation of its predecessor, this CD puts you somewhere on the Caribbean Islands and leaves you to chill out. Being almost impossible to be otherwise when you have Richard Dorfmeister for one of the supervisors of the compilation, this CD basically features only great tracks.
If you like anything from Kruder + Dorfmeister, Tosca, Thievery Corporation, Beanfield, Uptight Sound System or Dual Tone (Paul Hunter), you're bound to like this one to. I personally like the first track best because the ocean, sand, setting sun, seabreeze, seagulls, fresh grilled fish and some good wine afterwards with a decent smoke just pour out of it.
It just gets you in a good mood, that's it!

    Caribbean in binary!!!

    5 out of 5 stars This is it ! Brainsmashing Future-Primitive Roots.......2001-08-02

I've looked long and hard to find a solid modern dub album or compilation....most are weak or miss the point by being too modern. This album hits the bullseye. Solid heavy mix, lots of brainsmashing echo, enough modern effects to keep it fresh, and solidly connected to the roots ya love....Tubby, Scratch, LKJ, Rockers.

Some stuff is totally connected to the bass, drums, horns old school Rasta roots...a few of the cuts are excellent modern Tosca-stylee.

The new school finally "gets" it...and at least its available through more than just total underground or local channels.

Hit the bid. Raspect. One love.

    5 out of 5 stars top notch!.......2001-06-22

this is the most consistent and outstanding modern dub compilation i have ever heard, and i have a pile of them! 10 out of 12 cuts are stand-outs in my opinion. hi-fidelity dub sessions lives up to its name, with excellent sound quality as well as music. i cannot praise this disc too highly. if you own only 3 dub discs, make sure this is one of them! these artists are contemporary, not old jamaicans. don't let that stop you from buying this excellent disc.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-03-30

Fedde Le Grand...a previously unknown DJ (to me) until now. Well, he really delivers on a label (MOS) that is traditionally known for very commercial releases. Here's the breakdown:
Disc #1 starts out with a couple of slower BPM vocal tracks. Track 3 is where you can tell that Fedde is going to start tightening the {screws). Great buildup track...only to bring the listener back with great vocal track "work it." The rest of this particular CD is more of the same. Lots of vocals...which can sometimes ruin a compilation. Not in this case. A great track selection...except for a track called "My mind is twisted." Terrible song.
More standout tracks on disc 1:
    -Mister right
-I'm rushing (great bassline drop song)

Disc 2...YES. More of the same. You will be able to see the progression through the first 5 tracks as to how the BPM increases...oh so steadily. "Creeps" is yet another vocal track only to be followed by a couple of "filler" type selections in the middle of the cd. However, the track "Sex-O-Matic" is pretty ridiculous. Great track with a sexxy brazillian voice throughout. Follow this awesome track up with the HUGE club hit "Touch Your Toes"...and you will find yourself out of your seat dancing. At this point..Le grand winds down our journey with a nice finish.

Excellent track selection (except for My Mind Is Twisted). Get this...

Who dares to say Lord Finesse isn't a great MC? Lord Finesse IS one of the true lyrical champions of the Boogie Down Bronx and well reknown as the "punch-line King". On any great MC list, Finesse's name will be there. From Melle-Mell to KRS ONE to Big Pun, Lord Finesse is well respected as one of the "King MC's of Pelan" (The Bronx). This CD is "classic" Lord Finesse. All it's missing is the original version of "BABY, YOU NASTY", and it would've been a wrap. This is true NYC Boom-Bap at it's best! A must have!

5 out of 5 stars NOW LOOK HERE..........2004-12-06

What are you saying??? Lord Finesse was never a great mc? I can only shake my head in disagreement, as will MANY others. Finesse is such a very unique mc, who can't be compared to others. Now...I haven't actually got THIS album, but, as many heads out there will know (and here it is for those who don't), this album is worth getting just for the tracks "you know what I'm about" and "Pull Ya Card" (who else is spitting lyrics like 'Ness on these cuts man?, and you say he was never a great mc? you must be on a drug or two!). These two songs are unmatched lyrically and beatwise. Great for the hard heads, they are absolute classics, and as far as I can recall they only got released on 12" vinyl. This is your chance to finally secure them if you didn't back in the day. If you haven't heard them yet or got them in your collection, do not miss out!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not material to boost Lord Finesse's status.......2004-06-17

I ordered this album expecting to hear some vintage DITC lyrics and rhymes bringing it back to the days of the second golden era, right? Wrong. Lord Finesse was never a great MC, he's dope on the boards though. I will never dispute that. This album high points come when the listener hears Big L voice once again on the tracks "Yes You May" and "You Know What I'm About". Only the latter four tracks of the album may you nod your head in agreement, as for everything else, you'll be shaking your head in dissapointment.

    5 out of 5 stars Hi-Fidelity Dub Sessions,Vol.3.......2003-01-24

Landmark! Masterpiece! Speechless. This was the highlight of my new music discoveries for years. A friend burned this cd and handed it to me with a grin. I was so impressed I felt obligated to buy an original just to pay my humble dues. If you like dub or reggae and you can only afford one cd for 5 years, buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Contemporary dub that keeps an eye on the past.......2002-03-13

This album is beautiful! Laid-back, blissed-out, head-noddingly beautiful. All the artists involved are set on taking dub into the future but reverently keep one eye on the past glory of Jamaican dub. The album strays into other area's (downtempo, etc.) but it doesn't go too far, just enough to lend a sense of diversity that adds up to one fine, cohesive, whole. There aren't too many compilations that can pull that off.

5 out of 5 stars Brand New Roots.......2002-01-31

If you're wandering aimlessly in search of a record that could recreate the excitement of your cosmopolitan late night excursions, you might want to lend both ears to the third installment of the Hi-Fidelity series. As other compilations in the chill-out genre have by now ran out of steam, recycling the same 5 year old tracks heard everywhere else, Guidance records keeps digging out true musical gems. While "Lounge"(featuring tracks by the Dining Rooms, Thievery Corporation, Soulstance, etc...) plays off as the sexy, groove laden soundtrack for metropolitan cocktail-sipping hipsters, "Dub Session" is a more intimate affair, delivering this time a much
more progressive selection (featuring the works of Cotton Belly, Tosca, Boozoo Bajou, DJ Krushet al...), preserving the deep roots of dub, but thrusting the bass-heavy rhythms forward into the new millennium. Both albums and their predecessors in the series, simply stand out as the best collection of their kind."

    4 out of 5 stars dub-e-licious.......2001-12-16

In a race for night life, balmy island breezes, the latest entry in the Hi-Fidelity Dub Sessions stakes crosses the finish a distance first. Not to belittle the 2 previous entries, but they just aren't up to the challenge (believe me, I've got the whole Guidance Recordings family). You get your basic head nodding dub, spiced up with some dancehall, 2-step, downtempo chillout, and grooving vibes. Opening with Cotton Belly - "Tempest Dub" you're well on your way to some kinda' reggae heaven. The menu just gets better. Tack on cuts from Tosca, Bacuuzzi, Boozoo Bajou, Daddy Ous, and DJ Krush. Hip enough to include today's electronic tweakings without a second's thought. The end nicely wrapped with the classic "Ain't No Sunshine" reworked by Stryke. Just desserts served up. Hold that note a little longer? Yes indeed.

    5 out of 5 stars Sonah Kromah.......2001-11-30

I think this is an excellent selection for reggae lover like me. I give it a five stars. Track #9 Tout le monde by Daddy Ous is the best. Keep more coming. Thank you sonah.

There are a bunch of songs on here from artists I'd never heard of before, but it didn't matter! I bought the double CD, put the best tunes onto an 80 minute CD, and sold the original to a used CD store. It made me realize how good the best songs from this CD are! Even the James Brown song didn't make it to my compilation CD. Don't be put off by the inclusion of artists you haven't heard of -- it's worth the purchase! 4 out of 5 stars NICE*.......2005-08-11

First off, Royce has great wordplay and good lyrics to compare. Second, the beats he was rockin to were subpar. I was feelin it but I don't know if the replay value is as good as his first release. Check it out, its worth the listen.

4 out of 5 stars EVERYTHING ROYCE HAS DROPPED IS HOT.......2005-01-23

Royce spits fire. Period. Eminem is an idiot for lettin this guy go. Go cop everything he has ever put out. His new album "Make It Count" is raw. The beats on this album are raw, the lyrics are dark and descriptive. Like I said.....ROYCE DA 5'9 IS FIRE. And unlike most truly great lyricists, he's slept on.

4 out of 5 stars 2nd solo is another solid one.......2004-11-12

Royce returns just 4 months after his debut to drop his second album. About equal to "Rock City" and "M.I.C.". Has a few classic tracks and about 3 that are skippable, the other 17 are easily listenable. He definitely shows his lyrical skil on this one, and has a dis track aimed at Eminem & D12 too. Starts off really strong and ends strong, the middle is where the weaker tracks are. Features a few songs w/ his D-Elite (5 person) crew. Has some tight production on this one well. Recommended for fans, a good album.

      #1 - 10 (classic w/ a great beat)
      #2 - 9
      #3 - 8.5
      #4 - 8 (f/ D-Elite)
      #5 - 7.5 (f/ bow tie & polar bear)
      #6 - 7.5

5 out of 5 stars Uh-huh, you thought he was done, didn't ya?.......2004-07-18

Nope. Royce is back, full-force, and as he says "Life Goes On". Royce has been one of my favorite rappers for a long time (seeing as I'm from Detroit, I've been following his career pretty closely), and on "Build and Destroy", Royce pulls out just about every battle-rap he's got. Royce is an exception to my choice of "conscience" rap, normally I like rap that has a positive message, but even through Royce's hard-spit street-smart rhymes, he illuminates the gritty life of the streets, and whether he means to or not, he doesn't glorify the violence. That's a big part of why I like him.

On "Build and Destroy", the production is absolutely amazing. The background melodies and beats are heavy, strong, melodic, and inspiring. They serve Royce with a different sound to work with. On "Rock City", the production didn't really flatter Royce's unusual flow. On "Build and Destroy", Royce's flow is unrentlessly aggressive, and the production reflects this, unlike "Death Is Certain", (his best album yet), which is a CD focused on self-reflection with a more sombre flow. None the less, you'll be hard pressed to find production like this on any other rap record ever recorded. Every song is different, and they're all incredible!

Royce brings a whole new meaning to battle-rap and wordplay. On "King of Detroit", Royce challenges just about every rapper out there -
"You welcome to floss/and receive a consecutive loss/all I need's a second to talk/to get my message across/out-of-towners come to Detroit with all they mens/and that's a gamble, you know the house always wins./"
      "Y'all rappers want your respect?/Come get it!/"

He does just that. He throws down and earns his respect on this album. On "Life Goes On", over a track that sounds like it was produced by a Kanye West/Swizz Beats combination, he pulls out some of the best wordplay on the whole CD, i.e. -
"5'9" is back/and he's about to spit thunder and **** lightning."
Not only is the wordplay strong on this track, but the chorus is actually addictive, something that the album lacks. Without a doubt, the worst pitfall of the entire record is the repetitive, sometimes annoying hooks, but this is overshadowed by Royce's regiment of lyrical weapons.

There are too many strong tracks on this CD to really name off, but the VERY strongest would have to be "U Don't Know Me", "King of Detroit", "Life Goes On", "Take Me Away", and "Malcom X". On "U Don't Know Me", Royce spits the brutal truth, mixed with a little of his battle-rhyme sense of wit. It's a tight track.

On my personal favorite track of the CD (barely a step above "Life Goes On",) is "Take Me Away". This is much like Royce's "Death Is Certain Pt. 2 (It Hurts)" on "Death Is Certain". It's a touching, sombre song where Royce proclaims on the chorus-
"Take me away/from all the pressures of living today/come save me/I feel so alone/I don't wanna live/when you appear take my soul/just go/I wanna come home/"
      He goes on to spit-
"(Sometimes I wanna cry)/Askin myself why is that when fake *****'s collide, real *****'s divide/(It should be the other way)/Dawg, I feel you/Don't let them get to you, I love you/And you know who you are/(And until we meet again)/I just hope you choose your soldiers wisely/"
The melody to this song is emotional enough to inspire some powerful feelings in your chest, and when accompanied with Royce's powerfully spit lyrics and his accompanying soulful sung hook, it comes across as a very impacting song.

Last, but not least, we come to "Malcom X", the infamous D-12 diss. Now, as I said, I'm from Detroit, so I do like D-12 and Eminem to a certain extent, I don't feel like I need to choose between Royce or them. I like them both, (though I admittedly like Royce better). I've heard Eminem disses of Royce and they haven't really done anything for me, but on "Malcom X", Royce rips D-12 to shreds, and I mean that. He mercillessly bashes on Bizarre, Proof, and Eminem, referring to the rest of the members of D-12 as just that, the other members of D-12. "Build and Destroy" came out before "Death is Certain", so Royce hadn't moved past his beef with Shady yet, and "Malcom X" is so vicious it blows me away every time I hear it. He spits-
      "/You couldn't fit Bizarre's body in my shoes/"
(Referring to Proof)-"You better hope you and the white boy keep in touch/And be a good little hype-man, or your lease is up/Since Slim signed 50, I don't see your teeth as much/which is good, cause you've got a grill like a --- truck/"
(Referring to Bizarre)-"You can run or hide/I'll be on your porch with a cheese burger, trying to lure you outside/"
"/I'm about to end this quicker than Bizarre can finish a biscuit/"
These are about as mild and unimpressive as the lyrics on this song come, but since I can't put overly-vulgar lyrics online, you'll have to take my word for the fact that you have never heard a diss-song like this ever. What's so clever is that Royce has Tre Little counter-act his unforgiving position. Tre Little has a verse that tries to convince Em to call Royce up, but says that "/If anything happens to him/Something's gonna happen to you/"

"Build and Destroy" is just a sample of Royce's unflinching and unforgiving street-wise lyrics, packed with a range of different emotions and backed with mind-blowing lyrical wordplay. I strongly recommend this album. You won't be disappointed.
NOTE: If you're a Royce fan, or perhaps you're new to him, go check out "Death is Certain" and my review for that. If there are any CDs worthy of some hype, "Death is Certain" is most definitely deserving. Like I said, if you want more info on that, go check out my review.

5 out of 5 stars You are a real idiot..........2004-07-02

I think you were rattled more than Em was on Malcolm X if that's all you can rifle off about how bad Royce is. The kid's got mass talent, and has one of the best flows i have ever heard. His lyrics have improved substantially on the new CD Death Is Certain, and he doesn't need Eminem to make him a legend. He's already there. King of Detroit, please stand up. Peace.
