About the Artist
A stalwart in Chicago's hip-hop scene for a decade, EC is known for his grimy, yet easy-to-understand rhyme flow, underground production style and songs that embody his upbringing and life in the seedy Uptown neighborhood on Chicago's far North Side. E.C. Illa first emerged in the early 90s with the cassette-only Invisible Man EP. He followed that up with the double vinyl Ill State of Mind, the Live from the Ill EP and the Vandillism Instrumentals Vol. 1. However, his breakthrough album was 1996's Illa LP. The album perfectly captured EC's style and the Chicago rap scene in the mid-nineties. The album featured the classic "On ILL" which had the legendary video that featured Chicago breakdancers and graffiti art and received heavy airplay on The Box and BET. The album also featured "What You Be About" which is considered a worldwide gangster classic and is a harrowing description of the Chicago gang scene. The "On Ill" video and the Illa LP album were a big influence on such future stars of commercial and underground rap such as Eminem, El-P of Company Flow, Slug of Atmosphere and Sole. E.C.'s next album was 1997's Power Moves which was distributed by Universal and signaled EC's move away from underground hip-hop towards gangster rap. 1997 also saw the release of the second volume of the Vandillism Instrumentals series. After Power Moves, EC worked with super producer The Legendary Traxster (Twista, Do or Die, Mystikal, Psychodrama, Snypaz) and contributed tracks to the CWAL Ballaz Vol.1 compilation. He also executive-produced the seminal gangster rap instrumental compilations, Killer Beats Vol. 1 and 2. In the year 2000, EC released the vinyl-only Ill at Will EP which compiled some unreleased hip-hop tracks from the previous couple of years and signified his return to the hip-hop scene.

Product Description
E.C. Illa returns to the scene with his first full-length since 1997 and doesn't disappoint. Known for his hard hip-hop style which appeals to both the street and the underground hip-hop scene, EC drops a solid album on Chicago independent label A-List. The album features an impressive roster of Chicago guests from both gangster rap and underground hip-hop circles: legendary freestyler J.U.I.C.E., super producer The Legendary Traxster, abstract rappers Rubberoom, Yungbuk of Psychodrama, Blaze Battle Runner Up Prime of the Molemen, MTV/Loud On-Line Battle Champion Profound, Rhymefest, Ang 13, Matlock, and well-known (100% Juice) mixtape dj/producer Risky Bizness among others. The album also feaures West Coast artists Rasco, Planet Asia and Fanatik. Overall, a tight hardcore hip-hop album from the veteran mc/producer known as E.C. Illa.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely Check It Out.......2001-10-24

EC is one of the most slept-on artists in the game. An extremely talented rapper with a unique flow and a prolific producer as well. I like this album more and more the more I listen to it and it's probably more like a 4.5 or 5 than a 4. It does not sound like anything else out there which is why it takes a minute to really get into it. Starting with the banger "Too Raw" through the street anthem "Made in Chicago" thru the incredible "Don't Get Me Started" EC really impresses with his flow. Deceptively simple sounding lyrics are actually complex, intelligent and deep upon closer investigation. The second half of the album is more hip-hop in nature and features a lot of guests who are all surprisingly good especially Lumba of Rubberoom on "Blast Off," Profound on "Go Get It," Planet Asia on "ILL at Will," and Matlock on "Torment." What truly amazed me is that the album ends with The Legendary Traxster produced "Might As Well" which is a straight ahead gangster track which somehow is the perfect ending to this album. It's hard to describe this album exactly because it is unique but it's a very good album on the beats and the lyrics and I would defintely recommend it.
