5 out of 5 stars It Was Written that Nas is a legend and this was a great album.......2007-07-09

Yes, Illmatic was a classic debut, but It Was Written was a very impressive follow-up. This album seems to get lossed in conversations about great albums. Nas's flow was as deadly as ever and the album had great production. It Was Written brought Nas more into the public eye. Illmatic was a street classic. After this album, I think Nas tried too hard to appeal to mainstream and it caused a couple half albums.

From beginning to end, It Was Written is a great listen. Nas is one of best poets to ever touch a mic, hands down. His lyrics give you visuals and his thoughts are way deeper than the average rapper. If you want to listen to lyrics that make you think and are creative, It Was Written is classic album to buy......

4 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-05-30

Nas's " it was written" is it a classic ?Basically. Beats wise, lircally wise, and Nas was killing with his words back then. Strictly for fans of true hip hop. Few tracks such as streamdreams, blackgirllost and uhm if i rule the world were a bit commercial but thats about it. Its sick!

5 out of 5 stars It's not Illmatic, but damn near close enough.......2007-05-29

Nas made a name for himself with the classic "Illmatic". He cemented his name even further with his follow up "It was Written".
Track Listing:
1.Intro
2.The Message- Nice sampled beat from the Trackmasters with some nice lyrics from Nas 4/5
3.Street Dreams- Great song with great rhymes 4.5/5
4.I Gave You Power- This is where the album starts to really kick in lyrically. Classic track produced by the DJ Premier 5/5
5.Watch Dem Niggas- Great song with Foxy Brown. Nice lyrics from Nas 4.5/5
6.Take It In Blood- Very good lyrics over a very good beat 4.5/5
7.Nas is Coming- Good beat from Dr. Dre. Overall it's a good song 4/5
8.Affirmative Action- Damn near classic. Tight verses from Nas, AZ, and Cormega but Foxy Brown has the most memorable verse 5/5
9.The Setup- Classic storytelling from Nas over a dark beat by Havoc. Awesome track 5/5
10.Black Girl Lost- Nice message with good hook 4/5
11.Suspect- Another great storytelling track by Nas 4.5/5
12.Shootouts- Yet Another great example as to why Nas is one of the greatest rappers ever with his clever storytelling 4.5/5
13.Live Nigga Rap- Classic Nas and Mobb deep joint over another dark Havoc beat 4.5/5
14.If I Ruled the World- No better way to end the album than with a Lauryn Hill collaboration. Classic song 5/5

Overall, "It was Written" is one of the best albums of 1996 and one of Nas's finest LPs. It's arguably his best post-Illmatic album to date. There aren't really any flaws besides the fact that it's a bit more commerical than Illmatic, which was a choice by Columbia in order for Nas to sell more records. It is definitely a must have for any Hip Hop fan or fan of Nas from his earlier days.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest album ever made..........2007-05-13

If there's one thing I've learned in regards to Rap music and the internet, it's NEVER follow what reviews say. (Almost seems contradictory being that this is a review itself, I know.) I've checked reviews for albums I revered greatly that gave undeserving horrid ratings to; just as I've seen reviews for albums I was in disgust of, having high ratings. My point is that no matter what some sites might say, It Was Written is not only the most underrated album to have ever come out, but it's also the best, period. I really don't wish to hype it up too much; I'd rather you listen for yourself. Nas' display of his lyrical prowess and masterful flow on these hauntingly hardcore beats, along with great guest appearances, makes for me an outstanding work of art. Back when this album was released, some were disappointed due to it having a different tone from Illmatic's more mellow vibe; and so reviews bashing it were spewed about, and others just jumped on the bandwagon in saying this is a bad album. Although I must say, though my favorite, this is not a "perfect" album. I could do without the opening "slave" sequence - which seems almost comical and not serious, and would've rather them just had Nas and AZ talking over that beat for the intro. Also I'm not quite fond of the song "Black Girl Lost", due to its awful production. But I honestly don't know how anyone could listen to tracks like "The Message", "I Gave You Power", "Take it in Blood", "Nas is Coming" (excluding the annoying chorus), "Affirmative Action", "Suspect", "Shootouts", "Live Nigga Rap", and "If I Ruled The World", and say that it's weak, and not amongst the top tiers in not only Nas' catalogue, but in Rap music in general...

4 out of 5 stars Not Illmatic, but still a strong album.......2007-04-12

It was written was a pretty strong follow up to the 94 classic ILLMATIC. As always Nas delivers with sharp lyrics and creativity, as heard on tracks like "I gave you power", where he raps from the perspective of a handgun. The track, which was produced by DJ Premier, shows the chemistry between Nas & Premo. My only gripes with the album are that certain tracks could've used better production, such as the Dre-produced "Nas is coming" in which I thought would've been better considering the track record of the legendary west coast producer. Also, the song "Silent Murder", which was included on the cassette version is not included on the cd. But still I would say that this is one of the best albums in the Nas catalog. My personal favorite songs: "Street Dreams", "I gave you Power", "Black Girl Lost", "Live N*gga Rap", & "The Message".

4 out of 5 stars The best is wonderful, but there are a few duds.......2006-07-17

No portrait of a singer can satisfy all cmers, so EMI has shrugged its shoulders and tossed a bit of everything into the pot. (Without including any bonus tracks, one should note.) Hampson is without a doubt the successor to Fischer-Dieskau as the world's most famous operatic baritone. His strengths, like F-D's, are in song, especially American song. Seven of the 19 cuts here are American songs, which isn't enough. We don't really need Hampson's rather plodding and earnest Viennese operetta aria, nor his duet, "Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better" with the shrill Kim Criswell (to tell the truth, neither does very well). Two small slivers from Schumann's Dichterlieve cycle seems rather silly, too.

But that leaves a lot that's wonderful--all the American selections, the Rossini and Liszt songs, the aria form Korngold's Die Tote Stadt, and above all Hampson's rollicking, let-'er-rip rendition of Figaro's aria form the Barber of Seville. If this omnium gatherum entices listeners to bu the complete recordings, it will serve a very good purpose.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful Voice, Bad Choices.......2003-11-25

    Short and Sweet.

I love listening to this beautiful baritone's voice, but I really don't like his choice of songs on this album. Beautiful Dreamer is so hackneyed and I can't stand to listen to it (also why I didn't buy the Stephen Foster album). I did like is choice of two classic lieder by Schumann. I would have chosen more lieder for a different album, he does great things with it. The Live recording of Largo al factotum from Barber is distracting with audience claps and poor mics for the recording. You can hear him walking away from the mics (fading in and out). The absolute worst choice is "Anything You Can Do" from Annie Get Your Gun. It sounds nice but I hate this song. The rest of the songs swing from Sappy awful to beautifully sung.

Bottom Line: Inconsistent and Not worth your money. He can do much better

5 out of 5 stars A Great Showcase of Hampson's Voice and Artistry.......2002-02-23

Thomas Hampson is definitely one of the greatest artists on today's musical scene. This CD displays the beauty of Hampson's voice and the intelligence and artistry that he brings to a great variety of musical styles (German, French and Italian Opera; Italian, French and German art song, and American music). Among the highlights are the first selection, the beautiful "Mein Sehnen, mein Wähnen" from DIE TOTE STADT by Korngold, sung with great control and melting pianissimos. The same can be said of the aria from TANNHAUSER. His live "Largo al Factotum" from IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA is just virtuosistic, with effortless high notes (even a cadenza up to high C) and energetic vocal acting. In the art songs he is no less impressive, with total involvement in the style and mood of the songs, being particularly impressive "Oh, quand je dors" by Lizt. The American repertoire is also a delight. Hampson displays all kind of nuances for this repertoire, from the estatic quality of "Beautiful Dreamer" to the humor and bawdiness of "Where Is The Life that Late I Led". In summary, this is a delightful and eclectic souvenir from one of the most charismatic and intelligent singers of our time.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive coverage of Hampson's range in song.......2001-11-01

This EMI disc, "Thomas Hampson, Portrait" is an excellent example of the wide range of this melliflous baritone. From the first German aria, Korngold's "Mein Sehnen, mein Wahnen" one of my personal favourites, to Jerome Kern's "The Last Time I saw Paris" you have great variety of opera, lieder and popular song offering you examples of Hampson's great talent. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Finally a Messiah with fervor!.......2005-10-20

I've hunted a thrilling performance of The Messiah through 240 versions so far. This is the best I've found. Some are self-conscious, dutifully singing as instructed. Some are almost childish in their lilt. Some are overblown with so much bombast that you can barely hear the heart of the music. Some are concentrated on faithfulness to the original instruments. If you want a performance that will make you shiver with the power and joy of the music, this is the one. The singers are singing about GLORY. They sound as if they are ecstatic. The musicians are at one with the music and they create a virtual cathedral wherever this CD is played, just close your eyes. Or, let your own imagery, be it celestial, or of great oceans...carry you away.

      5 out of 5 stars Great recording!.......2003-09-22

There are so many performances of the Messiah out there that it is very difficult to point to a difinative one, but I'd put this in the catagory of the "very good" ones. As other reviewers have said, every performance is different and has its own character. Each has stronger and weaker points. Here the conductor and musicians have made good, solid musical choices. There is an amazing attention to detail which is not so obvious the first listen through but which makes the piece shine. The tempos seem to be right on, and there is no frivolous over-embellishment by the soloists. There is no attempt to be showey. The dramatic dynamics in the first section of the overture are interesting, but seem to work after you hear it a few times. This performance also includes sections which are often omitted (Second half of "He shall feed his flock," "Thou art gone up on high," "Great was the company of the preachers," and "Death where is thy sting"). I prefer the more intimate quality of a small ensemble of musicians to the mega-performances by the London Philharmonic, Vienna State Opera Orchestra, etc.. As with this performance, the smaller group lends a clarity to the music, where the larger ensembles can get a little "muddy" at times. Just my personal preference. Overall, this is a very good performance, and certainly the low price (being on the Naxos lable) makes this a clear choice.

2 out of 5 stars Good and Bad.......2000-04-09

I was more interested in "The Messiah" for the religious content than as a music critic, but this was too much. The strings are tinny. The orchestra is plodding. The soloists and choir are thankfully very good and seem to understand the meaning of the words. It is a shame the sound mix is uneven. The male parts come across loud and clear, but the poor women. For instance, No. 9 Oh thou that tellest..., the soloist sounded like she was singing in an echo chamber far from the mike. This is one of the most disappointing versions of "The Messiah" I have heard in a long time.

4 out of 5 stars This is a great recording!.......2000-02-11

I was really surprised with the new that the Messiah's New World premiere was held at Trinity Church in October 1770, twenty-eight years after it was written. This fact only will make one proud in having this CD among his collection.

Anyhow, this is nothing more than a historic detail and would not count if this recording had not an outstanding first-rate ensemble of singers. Without doubt there is no definitive version of Messiah. Each one has its own distinctive touch and feeling and exploring it is always a pleasant journey through imagination.

As stated by the conductor: "we must concede that performing Messiah with twenty singers and an appropriately balanced instrumental ensemble represents, at best, an imperfect comprimise", it will be easy to understand that this recording does not stand among the greatest and will probably carry some imperfections. I will mention two that kind of disppointed me a little bit. The Overture and the Chorus Worthy is the Lamb, for some reason misses the habitual vigor and strenght. Everything else is great and this is definitely a worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Let theyself be hereby dubbed.........Best Broadway Tune Vocalist..........2007-06-21

Of my dozens and dozens of Broadway music performances, I find only one singer can be dubbed "Best." That person, Thomas Hampson, is thee. While show performers and ballad singers have all had their way with these tunes, only one is across-the-board great in them.

And whether or not these are the "best" representative songs of Porter is a moot point, something entirely up to personal taste. The point is that these songs have not been better performed by an individual male singer. It certainly doesn't hurt, either, that the great John McGlinn was on board as conductor/director (and likely strongly involved in arranging).

5 out of 5 stars This isn't a vanity crossover project but Cole Porter with art and style.......2006-07-17

The glut of crossover albums that came our way in the ripe era of Pavarotti and Domingo has abated, leaving not the best taste in the mouth. But there were some high points, and this 1991 Cole Porter collection from Thomas Hampson is a gorgeous example. Like his hero from the 30s, Lawrence Tibbett, who triumphed as much on radio as in the opera house, Hampson sings full out, applying an overtly operatic baritone to popular song. He has such a command of vocal technique that, as with Tibbett and more recently Ben Heppner, the glory of the vocalism would carry the day on its own.

But Hampson adds to this a good deal of finesse, humor, and suavity--particularly the last. "Begin the Beguine" and "In the Still of the Night" convey the cosmopolitan asurance that is a Cole Porter trademark. There are also some bigger songs, such as "It Was Written in the Stars," where Hampson can unleash his voice at full force, a thrilling experience. I don't think there's been an opera star who's made a Cole Porter recording other than Kiri Te Kanawa, in forty years. This is a very enjoyable one indeed.

1 out of 5 stars pure self indulgent garbage.......2006-04-22

SOMEONE PLEASE STOP THOMAS HAMPSON, BEFORE HE HURTS HIMSELF...OR HURTS THE REST OF US....What a collective piece of trash this album is?..is there a more self-important, bloated, indulgent, precious, affected, pompous singer on the planet?...i am waiting for Thomas Hampson sings Disco...or Thomas Hampson sings Elton John...or Thomas Hampson does Eminem?...he probably thinks he could pull 'em off...what unmitigated gaul...don't waste your money here

4 out of 5 stars Thank god, no astaire or kelly singing on this one.......2001-04-30

This was a great listen and it was finally nice to hear trained singers doing Porter. Can't stand it when I hear a lilting Porter song in an MGM film and then Astaire or Gene Kelly decide to try and sing it, usually off key, and end up slaughtering the number. Great to hear some of the old stuff and different takes on other standards.

5 out of 5 stars Cole must have been watching over this project.......2000-09-06

John McGlinn's orchestrations on this compilation of Cole Porter tunes have as much to do with the brilliance of this CD as Mr Hampson's vocal renderings. Both have that lush sound that make a Porter tune sound like what this reviewer believes Porter would have appreciated, judging by his own versions of his songs, and the arrangements that he was involved in. McGlinn remained faithful to those original arrangements and added a few of his own ideas and along with modern day recording improvements produced a sound that I think Porter would very much approve of. My only complaint is the selection of songs, but that as always comes down to personal taste. However in doing so I was tuned into a few songs that I had never heard before, some of which are now among my favorite Porter songs. Specifically, 'Who said Gay Paree' is a sublime version of a lesser known Porter tune. It is one of his tunes about Paris but unlike the others its a sad tune of love lost with McGlinn and Hampson both at their finest. Another one new to me was'My Cozy Little Corner In the Ritz' an early Porter tune with him at his sarcastic best and a brilliant rendition. The standards are all briliantly done. 'In the Still of the Night' is my favorite, followed by I Concentrate on You', 'Easy To Love', 'Night and Day' (edging out Sinara's version, but not quite as magical as Fred Astaire's from the movie 'Gay Divorcee', but close) 'I've Got You Under My Skin' is divine, Begin the Beguine and 'Don't Fence me in'. All the others are great versions but none would make my top 50 Porter tunes. With the convenience of tracking with CD's though I program my favorites in and hear an hour of heavenly music from one of my favorite tunesmiths as interpreted by two contemporary masters of our time.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection of show tunes ........1998-12-06

Lost in Boston II is the second group of songs that have been put on an album that were cut from well known musicals. It is better than the first Lost in Boston- only because the songs collected here have nary a loser(okay,"It Was Always You" from Applause sounds like a theme from a 70's Tv show- but it's still tuneful and endearing). Some listeners may be familair with some of these songs from the Ben Bagley compilations, but for me many were complete revelations. For example, I had heard only negative things about the score to Grand Hotel- then I played the showstopper cut from the show called" Flaemmchen the Flame Girl" - and I now would like to hear what was not cut! The same applies to the team of Jones and Schmidt. When I heard the gorgeous song, "Thousands of Flowers" I immediately went to buy the final score of "I Do I Do"... The first two Lost in Bostons confirmed how underrated this song team truly is. The liner notes are informative and to the point but as with all good stuff, they leave you wanting more.Don't miss this CD. It is better than many complete Broadway musical scores!
