Highlite Zone

On their third album, Philadelphia's High and Mighty return with a formula they've perfected throughout their time in the underground: beats as sharp as cleats combined with Mr. Eon's no-nonsense, battering flow. It's a routine that's usually better suited to singles than albums but with Highlite Zone, DJ Mighty Mi and Eon expand the scope of their craft. The old school gets a plug on "Take It Off," borrowing from Philly's Hilltop Hustlers' classic, late '80s "Juice Crew Dis" and De La Soul's song by the same name as Eon clowns the trend in throwback jerseys and retro sneakers. "Rock the House" invites in beat box wizard Rahzel to contribute some fist and spit to the song's party vibe. The most unexpected track though is "Fast Food Nation," named after Eric Schlosser's book, which finds Eon taking on the processed food industry (don't expect McDonalds to sponsor the High and Mighty anytime soon). Underground beats and rhymes + dietary consciousness? Highlite Zoneoffers hip hop that's hot--and healthy. --Oliver Wang

Definitely solid, a good note to end a great career on. H&M definitely work better with others, but on "fast food nation" and a few other tracks, Mr. Eon proves he's more than capable of doing his dirt all by his lonely.

3 out of 5 stars high and mighty................ hit and miss!!!!.......2003-11-04

Ever since their 1st album "home field advantage" and their mini-album (or ep) "airforce 1", i was a fan. Unfortunately this time round they're nowhere near as effective. Its not so much that the album's wack as there is a few high points. Such as, "cheese factory" with copywrite, "incoporate anthem", the brilliant "standing room only" with cage, "high heat" with vast aire, "meldrick taylor" with tame one and the finale "live from the bullpen" with tame one+cage. Unfortunately thats just it, apart from the great guest stars on this one MR.EON just seems to have lost his edge. Its that old cliche, he's talking loud but aint saying nothing...very little he's saying nowadays has any relevance or makes much sense when he's on his own on a track. Simply put he's not as raw as the rest of the guys on the album. But the REAL letdown is MIGHTY MI's production and the almost unbelieveable dip its taking. All the songs i mentioned earlier that were actually worth listening to were produced by other guys such as CAMU-TAO, REEF, and the newcomer SEBB who does a great job. Its a case of taking the foot off the gas once they've reached a certain level. They need to get the hunger they showed back in the day and go back to basics. Dont get me wrong its far from wack but they set such high standards that they have just clearly dropped this time round. For the songs i named the album's still worth a listen though. Try cop it on the cheap...or else be a hugh fan and just accept whats giving.

Hey Mike- stick to your day job. Using mother***** every other word doesn't make you a good rapper. Otherwise, not bad.
