4 out of 5 stars Underrated - But Not Forgotten!.......2007-08-04

Patti Drew had the first radio release of Neil Sedaka's "Workin On a Groovy Thing" Her rendition is so soulful, so sixties and so sexy! You'll forget all about that saccharine Fifth Dimension cover.

4 out of 5 stars Fond Memories Of The New Colony Six!.......2006-03-09

For you old timers (myself included) that remember & liked The New Colony Six; you have got to hear these ballads again! Hands down; This is one of the best Bands that I remember; and yet forgot about; until I happened to stumble upon their (out of print) Best Of; Colonized CD here at Amazon. What a pleasant surprise for me! Needless to say; I done more searching looking for my favorite New Colony Six songs on other compilations that was still in print and found their 2 most popular Ballads was on Dick Bartley Presents Classic Oldies 1965-1969 being, I will Always Think About You, and, Things I'd like To Say, however purchasing that CD only left me wanting more of their good songs. I knew there was more because I vaguely remember a few of them but didn't remember the titles and it has been so long; the available 30 second song samples wasn't helping me at all. Well..... My search stopped right here with this Treat Her Groovy Disc that Amazon now has. The titles of 2 of those songs are, Barbara; I Love You, and, Blue Eyes, and, Blue Eyes, isn't even on the Colonized CD. There are also 3 others here that I remember and I think they are every bit as beautiful as the Band's 2 most popular Ballads (which are also here) being, I Want You To Know, I Could Never Lie To You, &, Can't You See Me Cry. The remainder of the songs don't appeal to me much and that is why I only gave this Disc 4 stars however the Ballads more than justify purchasing this CD.
This Disc is their 2 Mercury Records Studio Albums, Revelations, &, Attacking A Straw man, from 1968 & 1969 on 1 Disc and for roughly ¼ of the price of the Colonized CD; and this is what I was looking for. This Disc and their, At The Rivers Edge, Disc will get you 15 of the 20 Colonized songs anyway; for roughly ½ the price. The sound quality on this CD is as beautiful as the Ballads. If you like this band; you can't go wrong here. I cannot believe I completely forgot about them but then.....It was a long time ago!
Final Note; I'm only kidding about old timers only. Everyone needs to hear the Ballads I have mentioned above! Simply put......They are Gorgeous!

4 out of 5 stars Great music reminiscent of the Association.......2006-02-21

Thank God for Satellite radio! I had no idea who did "Things I'd Like To Say" until I caught it on XM and it was The New Colony Six! I was aware of their garage rock sound but not the ballad sounds that would make you think of the Association or Gary Puckett. Better than Puckett, on par with the best Association music and were better at making whole albums as evidence here. If it had more cuts like "Sun Within You" and "Come Give your Love To Me" and dropped the last two cuts, I would have given it 5 stars. Save yourself some bucks and skip the "Colonized" Rhino collection. Far too expensive. Buy this along with the insanely excellent "At the River's Edge" (5 stars!) and you will have most of "Colonized" for half the price. One disc will have the garage and the other will be the lighter sunshiny music. A logical move in 1968 for a garage band considering the immense popularity of Puckett, the Association, the Bee Gees, etc. If you are into this stuff don't hesitate.

5 out of 5 stars New colony six - 2 albums in 1.......2005-12-07

Being from chicago, the new colony six where the second most popular local bang in the late 60's only the buckinghams got more national attention.

This CD combines their last 2 albums on Mecury Records "revelations" and "attacking a straw man" . Most people will know the hits from the first album "i will always think about you" and their biggest national hit " things i'd like to say". its good clean pop sound, happy and carefree no anti war messages here, just fun and toe tapping/sing along songs......hope you like as much as i did when i bought the 8-track tapes in '68 and '69!

Album Description

In 1960s France, the bastion of the burgeoning youth culture in Europe, teenagers were becoming totally absorbed in American culture, though films, music and clothes. Long before the sixties began to swing in London town, France was enjoying what was to become known as "les annees ye-ye." A truly golden period of uniquely Gallic takes on American and British pop. Out of this music explosion came the "ye-ye girls," sultry, young French maidens, heavy on mascara and a languid innocence. Inspired by the chanteuse tradition, these sexy girls added their own sparky twist to create a much loved chapter in the history of pop.

This compilation bring together a groovy collection of sounds that capture the pure essence of ye-ye from straight down the line pop to the influences of psychedelia. This release is the perfect starting point to the swinging world of ye-ye. If it were any cooler it would be frozen.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Great music, lame compilation.......2007-07-04

Annoyingly, this brazenly rips off the title of the well-known - and much more lovingly compiled - Swinging Mademoiselle compilations. Everything about it is as unoriginal and careless as the borrowed title, from the misattributions to the generic liner notes. Not to mention that every track is available on other compilations. A listless attempt to cash in on a trend and others' good taste and hard work.

Yes, the music itself is wonderful, but instead go for the superior Femmes De Paris and Pop A Paris compilations, or try to track down the original Swinging Mademoiselle or Ultra Chicks comps, as a previous reviewer suggested.

4 out of 5 stars French Bubblegum Pop Rock - Sound Quality Iffy.......2006-03-23

While the Amazon reviewer called them yeh-yeh girls - which I think of as more folk-pop, the tracks on here are mostly all of the bubblegum pop rock variety - nothing wrong with that if that's what you want but if you're looking for yeh-yeh songs, you'll be disappointed.

The sound quality also leaves a lot to be desired but since there's not a lot of these songs in print avaialble in the US, these will do for now.

If you prefer your French pop more of the Power Pop/Rock variety, you'll be very happy with "Femmes De Paris V.1" The two collections share 3 tracks and the sound quality is WAY WAY better on the Femmes De Paris V.1 CD.

It's still fun and as promised, it is "groovy.' Sound quality could be better.

2 out of 5 stars Just for the record.......2006-01-24

The title of this compilation is a rip off of an earlier and superior compilation by Sasha Monet entiitled Swinging Mademoiselle. Yes the music on this is good, but the unoriginality of this comp is a turn off. On top of that there is wrong information: "Et moi, et toi, et soie" is not a song by Clothilde but by Cleo (a song written by Dutronc and prior to his own hit "Et moi, et moi, et moi." Also, it is Jacqueline Taieb not Tajeb. So as you can see there is something not right here.

But, due to the unavaiability of superior comps, this one will have to do.

This collection is of music that 95% of French people do not know nor have ever heard of though it is superior to non-Franco ears than a lot of the big stars of the day. This stuff was churned out by music industry factory of the 60s that had just found that there was a market for "new music." With the exception of Taieb, Stella, Pilzer and Clothilde the girls no this comp did not write their own songs or had much say in how the material was produced.

5 out of 5 stars A Nice Surprise!.......2005-12-27

When I first found this CD in the French music section I thought this would be a cheesy, cheap, and bad compilation with a poor quality of music. But to my surprise, I found it to be one of the most catchy and melodic French albums I've ever heard. And to think that this is from the 60's! Of course, this album makes me think of the glory days of pop when the Beatles took over the music world, but at the same time it opened me up to a more fresh side to France and French music that I never thought of before. Every song is as catchy, playful, innocent, and sexy as the next. Even though there seems to be very little information about these "ye-ye girls" (the most popular was Brigette Bardot), listening to these songs makes me want to know more about them---and if I can't, simply treasure the gems they've made during the glory days of 60's pop. I can't wait to show this to my French teacher and see what she thinks about it, I bet she will even be surprised at this wonderful treat! If you are into 60's pop music, then surely you will like this album even if you may not be a fan of the French language or can't understand French in general.

5 out of 5 stars Another side of the 60s.......2005-11-16

For those of you who grew up thinking that the 1960s were nothing but protest and pschedelia take a listen to Swinging Mademmiselles: Groovy French Sounds from the 60s. This great little cd shows us that pop was definitely king at least in France. All the tracks are sung by different French chanteuses with a certain girly but knowing sound to their voices. The most bizarre track on the cd is one singer's take on The Who's mid sixties anthem, "Talkin' bout my Generation. The only recognizable thing in this version of the song is the ever catchy refrain, "Talkin' bout my g-g-g-generation." Have fun listening to this very European time capsule of this generation.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars We love mr. Ray!.......2007-03-27

This is a wonderful CD for kids, because it is one that parents will enjoy listening to as well. mr. Ray is a former rocker who played with Meatloaf and others -- and definitely can sing. We have all of the mr. Ray albums and it's hard to choose which is better. What I love about Songs from the Kids' Lounge is how catchy the songs are and there are very good messages dispersed throughout the songs -- especially about respect and inclusion. My pre-schooler learned the order of the days of the week from the song with the same title, and for the first time ever, mr. Ray has inspired my usually shy daughter to sing loud and strong -- and even attempt "writing" a few of her own songs. IMPORTANT NOTE: Don't be gouged by high-priced sellers -- this CD should be available at Amazon for a reasonable price. And if not here, be sure to check out mr. Ray's website for CDs and other merchandise.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Ray Rocks!.......2007-01-19

I purchased this CD for my 3 year old son and he loves it! The lyrics are catchy and the music is fun - I find myself singing along to the CD in the car! If you are going to be forced by your toddler to listen to his music under the threat of a tantrum, this is a whole lot better than "Old MacDonald".

5 out of 5 stars Great for the kids, Great for the parents too.......2005-05-29

Considering that Mr. Ray lives nearby and gives a free concert locally on a regular basis, we were quite familiar with Mr. Ray's music. We purchase his first CD and loved it. So, for Christmas this year, Santa put this CD, Mr. Ray's second outing called "Songs from the Kids' Lounge" in my son's stocking. My son was very addicted to listening to the first CD that he didn't play it right away. Every night we have "Mr. Ray" time, where he's brought to his room to dance and jump and get those last bits of energy out before taking his bath and going to bed, and he always insists on putting on Mr. Ray music.

Well, he finally started playing this second album, and I have to say, having heard all the songs EVERY NIGHT for the last few months, I actually like this better than the first one. Why? The music itself actually sounds more sophisticated, which is a good thing. Mr. Ray has written on his website that he wanted to make sure that his next album was something that everyone could enjoy, because he knows that parents listen too. And I DO listen. The music definitely shows his major influences, like the Beatles or Carole King, as well as some others. Just about every tune you could rewrite the words, and they'd easily be a song that you'd hear on mainstream radio. But instead, Mr. Ray talks about things that apply to all kids, like being nice to kids who are different, encouraging others to do well with a high five, learning the days of the week, etc. But he has some fun, silly songs too. One of our favorites is the "UM song", which is about when you can't think of something to say, you usually say, "um....". This seems especially appropriate for my son, as he actually has a speech impairment and says that a lot. But it's a way of poking fun at ourselves that we all do it, and for my son, he sees it's okay. He's actually learned the words, which is exciting for us, and he knows the words to all the Mr. Ray songs.

If you want to get a good CD that everyone can listen to, that won't make you, as a parent, say, "Man, that CD is annoying!", you've gotta get this one, because it's SOOOOO listenable for everyone, and it's just plain good music!

5 out of 5 stars Feelin' Groovy.......2007-01-10

This truly is a groovy album. I hadn't realized how many hits HP had, or how much I enjoyed their music "back in the day". It's happy music - with a bit of a dark side at times -- and it can really improve a bad mood day!

As a professional fiction writer, I really appreciate the way they turn a phrase and tell a story.

5 out of 5 stars Great slice of the sixties.......2006-11-04

The lovely grouped harmonious voices of Harpers was in keeping with the trend of that time period. Recall the Monkees, Beatles, etc. These guys didn't enjoy quite the same PR or fame, but two of the cuts "Feelin' Groovy' and 'Anything Goes' did reach the charts and did do well. In fact, 'Feelin' Groovy' is on many compilations of the period as well. I can attest to having been around then and everyone was singing/whistling that tune. It just wouldn't go away, nor was it annoying. So, buy the cd, kick back and get nostalgic for a time when people were a little kinder/gentler/more civil.

2 out of 5 stars Don't even have to hear it..........2006-03-29

I have been a fan of HB since hearing Feelin' Groovy back in '67 (or was it '68). The best thing I ever did was NOT buy their Feelin'Groovy album first. I remember being faced with the choice of Anything Goes or Feelin' Groovy. I opted for the former on the basis of Chatanooga Choo Choo and Anything Goes scoring together on points better than Feelin' Groovy. Anything Goes is just 150% excellent. I played that LP to death. I then bought the Secret Life. Arguably even better as a 'whole' even though it didn't have songs to match Anything Goes and Chatanooga Choo Choo. I then bought Feelin' Groovy and was dissapointed. I would never have bought the other albums on the strength of Feelin' Groovy.

As a previous reviewer pointed out, without even hearing this compilation I just knew they've got it wrong. What a waste.

My advice? Hunt out Anything Goes and The Secret Life or Harper's Bizarre rather than buy this. Also Harper's Bizarre 4 (which I've only just got from Amazon - March 2006!). Excellent, but not as good as Anything Goes and Secret.

5 out of 5 stars Feelin' Groovy: The Best Of Harpers Bizarre.......2000-05-02

It brings back the best of memories. The mix of instruments, topped by the best harmonies, what a heavenly delight. Just close your eyes, sit back, and enjoy! There will never be this kind of magic, ever again. I also am trying to find the album or cd " Anything Goes". I can sing every song on that one. What I miss on the "Best Of", is the prelude to Anything Goes, where the tune of Anything Goes is being sung like Rudey Valley, and some lyrics like, Instead of landing on Plymouth Rock, Plymouth Rock would land on them. For all the youngsters out there, Try it, you'll like it!

4 out of 5 stars Back In The Daze #5.......2000-02-21

Hailing from the mystery spot known as Santa Cruz, California, and previously known as "The Tikis," Harpers Bizarre was a clever work of experimentation, coyly disguised as a soft-rock combo. Harpers, boasting an editorial staff to the envy of any fan of the genre, would seamlessly blend innuendo, revivalism, and daring multi-track bombast, to turn any generation's ear sideways. Given that Warners has been the stingiest of the major labels to delve into its archives, fans will will find this tempting overview, "groovy," and newcomers may hear Harpers Bizarre for what they were, as pioneers of broad band Tiki-nology.

Joe Newman (tp) Frank Foster (ts) Tommy Flanagan (p) Eddie Jones (b) Billy English (d) 3/17/61. (Swingville)

Recorded 10 months after the excellent JIVE AT FIVE album (also for Swingville), and with Flanagan and Jones returnees, this album is just as good as its predecessor. Frank Foster's forceful, mainly middle-register playing is very effective, and Tommy Flanagan is as good as ever. Only one tune, MO-LASSES, which is a blues a bit too overloaded with funk, is not up the the high level of the other tracks. A solid date.

4 out of 5 stars A great trumpet player. A unique and clear, vibrant horn........1999-08-18

A great find, after hearing Joe Newman's horn quality. I had to go out and find any and everything I could that he was on. Basie, Ellington everything.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2005-01-21

This is a must have for any Wilson fan. Reuben's organ work is fantastic throughout and he thrives in the pocket on this one. The other players on this one do a great job but it is Reuben's organ that is the focus of A Groovy Situation. And he delivers with great solos and heads on all tracks. Especially notable are the tracks While the World lies Waiting and a cover of Stevie Wonder's (I think) Signed, sealed, delivered, im yours.

A great buy for any Hammond B3 fan.

Album Description

With heavenly harmonies and an upbeat sound, California soft-rock gurus Harpers Bizarre launched their career with Paul Simon's '59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)', a 1967 chart smash. Using almost every big gun in Los Angeles' studio arsenal (Randy Newman, Van Dyke Parks, Jack Nitzsche, and Lowell George), Harpers Bizarre then proceeded to weave these four tapestries-now with 2 bonus tracks per CD, on Sundazed Music!

5 out of 5 stars You will feel "Groovy"!.......2005-09-11

If you like happy, feel-good music then you will enjoy this CD. Happy, tunes from a simpler, more carefree time. As the words from "Happy Talk" say, "You got to have a dream, if you don't have a dream, how you gonna have a dream come true." Take a some time with these tunes and dream a little. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Buy it now.......2003-08-24

Before it drops out of print, buy! This is a perfect example of the cheerful music of the '60s. LYrics that you can understand and consist of actual words. Much better than "yu is mah baby" repeated 40 times, or "ooh ooh ooh booty down" or "I want you..I want you..Iwant you" and on and on. You get the idea. Do yourself a favor and get all the Harpers albums... Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars THE TIKI'S + VAN DYKE PARKS= HARPERS BIZARRE.......2001-12-07

BACK IN 1992 WHILE I WAS STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL I BOUGHT THIS ALBUM ON VINYL. I RECORDED IT ON TAPE(CASSETTE)AND OF COURSE THE SPEED OF THE TURNTABLE AND THE TAPE RECORDER WERE DIFFERENT, SO THE TAPE SOUNDED A LITTLE ON THE SLOW SIDE. THERE WERE ALSO OF COURSE A COUPLE OF POPS FROM THE VINYL. UP UNTIL NOW THIS WAS ALL I HAD. I DIDN'T WANT TO KEEP PLAYING THE RECORD(PRESERVATION SAKE).
THIS ALBUM IS JUST PLAIN EXCELLENT. THE DEBUT ALBUM OF THE BIZARRE IS DEFINITLY THE STONGEST AND MOST ENJOYABLE OUT OF ALL FOUR OF THEIR ALBUMS.ALL THOUGH I DO ENJOY THE OTHER 3 BIZARRE ALBUMS,"FEELIN' GROOVY" HAS PROBABLY THE COOLEST AND ONE OF THE MOST DIFFERNT AND ORIGINAL SOUNDS THAT CAME OUT OF 1967. THIS ALBUM HAS MANY HIGHLIGHTS, FROM VAN DYKE PARKS' ARRANGED "COME TO THE SUNSHINE" TO THE QUIRKINESS OF "RASPBERRY RUG," FROM SOUTH PACIFICS "HAPPY TALK" TO RANDY NEWMANS'"SIMON SMITH AND THE AMAZING DANCING BEAR." THIS ALBUM IS UNUSUALLY COMPLEX YET PLEASING. AN EXCELLENT ALBUM FOR EARLY SUMMER MORNINGS OR DREARY FALL AFTERNOONS.

5 out of 5 stars deep music.......2007-01-26

The CD has a especial annointing for worshipers. The CD is powerful.

5 out of 5 stars Prophetic Worship -- par excellance!.......2005-12-10

I read the first review and have NO idea what that person expected from this CD. But Cloud By Day is one of the most powerful prophetic cds out and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in prophetic music...especially edgy, "out of the box" music. And besides, the quality of its instrumentation and vocals is super as well.

1 out of 5 stars cloud by day-prophetic worship.......2005-09-13

With all due respect to the artists and worshippers involved in what I am sure was a great investment, this cd was a considerable disappointment. The words "prophetic worship" carry significant weight and should be used with great care.
I encourage that this cd be sampled before purchasing and hope that others disagree.

When Red Garland was a member of Miles Davis's band in the late '50s, Davis would regularly depart the stage to feature Garland in a trio format. He was a complete jazz pianist, able to find ideal chordal extensions to prod a soloist, to swing aggressively with block chords, and to string together single note lines with buoyant energy and a bright articulation. He was capable of real delicacy, but his playing never descended to the decorative. His regular trio featured bassist Paul Chambers, his gifted partner from the Davis quintet, and drummer Art Taylor, a rock-solid timekeeper whose balance of subtlety and drive also made him Bud Powell's drummer of choice. Garland mated his harmonic sophistication to elements that communicated directly, his tunefulness, his rhythmic drive, and his vigorous roots in Texas and the Southwest blues traditions. They're evident everywhere here, from the medium-tempo swing of Ellington minimalist masterpiece "C-Jam Blues" to the deep, melancholic blues that infuse "Willow Weep for Me." Garland's Prestige recordings of the late '50s are models for the piano trio in modern jazz, and Groovy is among the best of them. --Stuart Broomer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Are you kidding me with the one star?.......2007-07-23

Red Garland's style is refined, purity at its greatest, simplicity at its finest. This album (Groovy) has been chosen as one of the 100 jazz recordings of all time. Most countries out of U.S., this CD will go for twice the price here. The value of this album is that much noticed abroad. Please let's not give ratings irrationally and defame one of the greatest jazz pianist of all time.

4 out of 5 stars One of the piano masters.......2004-07-25

Definitely one of the great piano trio recordings. Red Garland was the man alright. Subtle, tasteful rolled into one. Loads of space, great timing etc.

4 out of 5 stars Candy to the ears.......2003-06-07

After hearing Milestones by Miles Davis, and hearing track 05 Billy Boy, I hurried over to my nearest CD store to pick up Groovy. The ease and the buoyancy created by Red Garland on Billy Boy, one of my favorite standards, was just it. Having the name Groovy, one would think that this album is full of alot of songs played with the style he had on Billy Boy. Although C-Jam Blues, Hey Now and What Can I Say (After I Say I'm Sorry) are very similar to the style of Billy Boy the other half of the songs are ballads. Now don't get me wrong the ballads are beautiful, candy to the ears. But if I were you I would buy Garland of Red first. But if you already have Garland of Red I would strongly recommend picking this album up.

4 out of 5 stars A very special record.......2003-06-05

Red Garland has never received the amount of praise he deserves. Maybe he simply didn't stick around long enough with Miles once the maestro was signed to Columbia. The great Miles Prestige sets which Garland was a part of as well as Round About Midnight and Milestones, are among the greatest piano accompanyments on record.

It was very hard to decide whether this record merits 4 stars or 5. I chose 4 because I cannot put this record on the level of other Garland/Miles records. However, this is Garland's greatest set, because he plays just what is needed and nothing more; something many pianists forget.

To the avid jazz listener: Be warned, while this is a very special set, it will not blow you away, if you've heard Garland in the Miles Quintet. If by some chance you came upon this recording and do not own any of Miles' recordings with Garland, I suggest you purchase that first, particularly Milestones.

5 out of 5 stars Red at his best.......2002-02-09

Do yourself a favor and go pick up a copy of 'Groovy' and a 'Garland of Red', clearly the best works of Red as a solo artist. No piano player I have ever heard swings as well and as hard as Red does. Check out his version of C Jam Blues (worth the price of the CD just to hear that).
