Editorial Reviews
From URB Magazine
Martin Dosh, an elementary-school drum teacher and former piano virtuoso for the Fog, reveals his basement side-project - this marvelously flawed and fuzzy composition of live and self-engineered noise. While everyone is so obsessed with crystal-clear production and rare drum samples, this cat and his abounding supply of experimental tools (Dictaphone tape, faders, mutes, effects pedals, homemade recording modules) together craft harmonies that take the listener in immediately. A couple tracks even have that notable Anticon-esque hard-drum sentiment, in case the kids need something to flow to. Though the beats are mostly live, the production is what you would expect from this prolific label - quality-sounding with that classic and unscathed authenticity. Layers of sad, jazzy piano keys (even some applied by his own students!) mixed with reverb, hi-fi sounds and the affecting drones and drum beats make this album a must for a somber evening on the porch with a '70s-filtered spectrum sunset.

4 out of 5 stars Dosh is just getting warmed up.......2007-01-29

Outside of his casual day job as the drummer for Andrew Broder's Fog, Martin Dosh has a quaint little hobby going as a basement producer. Though critically acclaimed, his first two albums sounded like/as they were recorded in a basement. For whatever reason, Dosh decided to open up the studio for his third album. The Lost Take sees contributions from Andrew Bird's violin, the guitars of Erik Applewick (Tapes n' Tapes) and Jeremy Ylvisaker (Fog), Happy Apple's Mike Lewis, and more, while the production sounds more expensive. The focus here is not on glitchy drum and bass like Pure Trash nor on field recording driven downtempo like his self-titled solo debut. While his song structure is still quite manic, the richness of sounds and collaborations makes this Take his most fully realized album yet. Screw day jobs. Fog has gone downhill with every album, but Dosh is just getting warmed up.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing..........2006-11-19

Dosh's The Lost Take is one of the most well-done and beautiful electronica albums I have heard in a long time. Do not be put off by the long list of guests. Every contributor integrates into the album seamlessly, making this Dosh's best album to date. While his previous albums dealt mostly with drums and the Rhodes piano, as those are Martin Dosh's instruments of choice, he has brought in accomplished guitarists, violinists, saxophone players, and other instrumentalists to enrich his album. There is no best track; the album blends seamlessly from one to another (Although to be honest, I wasn't crazy about "Fireball.") Overall, this is a warm, enjoyable album which is unmissable for any fan of jazz, rock, electronica, or, well, music in general.

5 out of 5 stars Free Flowing And Jazzy In A Sun-Kissed Way.......2004-10-19

"Dosh" is pretty album of basement-infused, melodic, low-fi instrumentals created from Fender Rhodes, drums and drum machines, guitars, various percussion, loops, random voices, and numerous effects.

Song structure is secondary to the sound, the groove, and numerous simple melodies. It's free flowing and jazzy in a sun-kissed way. At times the noises and rhythms almost spin out of control, but Dosh quickly reigns them in.

The music isn't beholden to any specific genre or decade. Some references to 80's electro, 90's indie, and 00's loopers are bound to crop up, but they are fleeting. It has a timeless quality.

While this album has garnered excellent reviews in mostly indie and underground publications and web sites since it was released in 2003, I think that years into the future more people will look back at this recording and discover it for the classic that it will some day be recognized as - at least I hope. It's quite an amazing work.

4 out of 5 stars dosh makes me happy.......2004-03-13

Dosh has a great sound. Even without words this music drips gallons of emotion. This is his solo album but he plays in other really fantastic bands, fog (ninja tune) and lateduster (www.firetrunk.com) "Delicate arrangements sweep listeners into moody soundscapes that ebb and flow with focused abandon." -St Paul Pioneer Press. I can't wait to hear the next album!

5 out of 5 stars The wonderful world of Dosh........2003-11-11

To try and describe the eclectic wonder that is the new album by Minneapolis' Dosh, is a difficult task in that in its beauty there is a complexity undescribably beyond a human level of understanding. If you like to hear wonderful melodic marvel, than pick up this album and let it enrapture you...

5 out of 5 stars incredible.......2003-09-03

it is about time that dosh put an album out. after hearing all the hype and all the noise about this, it would have to be perfect or near. the beats on this record are completely mind-numbing.
Dosh is not human at all for those who do not know him personaly....he is really a robot sent back in time from the future to kill john connor....wait that is the terminator.
oh, yeah ....my bad, dosh is a real person for those who think he is not....and i know what you are going to say next. "how can a real person come up with such dope tracks?" this is what is known as an anomaly. it can not possible be explained, so dont even try. but for those hard headed people that try to understand how someone could possible come up with the amazing beats and samples and tracks....than here is a suggestion. ready? ok the answer is simple, dosh has evolved into some sort of super-human that has the ability to use his entire brain and has obviously used that ability to make dope records. I guess he could use his powers to solve world hunger, or world peace...but than again "dosh works in mysterious ways" Hopfully one day all man will be where dosh is but today we mush wait and hope.

I highly recommend this album if you like artists like Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, and DJ Shadow. This album lays out beautiful sonic landscapes backed by amazing percussion/beats and pulls it off without sounding derivitive of anyone.

5 out of 5 stars A Surreal Sophomore Outing For Dosh.......2004-11-17

"Pure Trash" the beautiful follow-up to Dosh's previous self-titled debut comes on the cusp of his "Naoise," EP which is in itself a journey into the clash of harmonic equilibrium. Anticon, best known for supporting nothing but excellent talents, has again proven themselves by backing Minneapolis' Dosh. "Pure Trash" has a somehow crisper sound, better produced one might say, but all this means is Dosh's whirrs, whisps and fuzzy percussion over peace-laden or chaotic-riddled rhodes keyboarding and a plethora of other instrumental venturings, is given the sound it deserves. Like Ray Charles said, the only questiong that matters in the end is: "What does it sound like?" This album sounds amazing. Driving in my car is my favorite place to explore the dreamscapes Dosh has created, with so many moments of clarity through dissonance and consonance, it is easy to daydream while somehow drumming along and adding your own vocals. This is a great listen and I'm sure that there is nothing but good things to come.
