Blue Velocity is a record which aptly
showcases many sides of this brilliant
artist in the context of high energy
blues-rock with moments that bring to
mind legendary artists as diverse as
Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix and
Eric Johnson. Duarte has made the
kind of guitar-driven blues record that
fans have been waiting for.
Album Description
Chris Duarte Group emerged on the scene out of Austin, Texas in the early 90's and gained notoriety after wowing a packed room of industry insiders at the South X Southwest convention. In the wake of Stevie Ray Vaughan's passing, Duarte quickly gained a national reputation as a young man imbued with a playing style comparable at times to the late guitarist.

In your face.......2007-08-07
Chris Duarte's shining guitar is finally put at the center of the whole thing. Blue Velocity is clearly a reminiscence of Texas Sugar and will make the blues fans smile. It is even more guitar driven than previous works. It's raw, spontaneous, essential.
Excellent.......2007-08-05
Chris' best since Strat Magik. Easily the best live show you will ever see and this new CD has it all.
Phenomenal!.......2007-08-03
Quite simply an unparalleled guitarist. Chris Duarte's singing continues to improve while his guitar playing continues to evlove to ever greater levels. A must have for those who appreciate technically superior, sonic guitar work!

A single player overdubbing himself on several instruments can be a dangerous proposition. But nobody is better prepared for this sort of adventure than American-born guitar virtuoso Bob Brozman. While an ardent and respectful student of various world music traditions, many of which were previously explored during his many international duet recordings, he nonetheless wields an indomitable voice of his own. It is this quality that renders so many of his recordings unclassifiable, as if music of such consistent interest actually required pigeonholing. For this outing, as the hilariously apt cover shot indicates, Brozman, along with a couple of longtime collaborators, has become a multitude. But the result is unexpectedly spacious and relaxed; the various instruments interact but never crowd or overwhelm one another. The 12 tracks are informed by a contagious sense of wonder and deep enjoyment, plus broad swaths of humor both silly and sly. The tunes travel between ports of call like Reunion, Trinidad, Okinawa, Mali, and Hawaii without any jarring transitions. Despite the decidedly modern, shrinking globe frame-of-reference -- only Brozman would employ a Finnish kantele harp during a tango -- many of the tunes have a retro feel. At times, it's like wandering into an antique store and suddenly finding oneself transfixed by a 78-RPM recording of unknown provenance. --Christina Roden
Album Description
Lumiere is the culmination of guitar virtuoso Bob Brozman's musical memories formed over a lifetime of travelling and playing music with others. His years of absorbing influences from cultures worldwide is expressed through the establishment of the Bob Brozman Orchestra - a unique concept where Bob intricately plays each instrumental part, building layer upon layer to formulate the tremendous sound of an extensive orchestra. He revisits the influences drawn from previous collaborations with artists such as Debashish Bhattacharya, Rene Lacaille, Djeli Moussa Diawara and Takashi Hirayasu to reflect on the profound imprint travel has had on his life.

Acoustic Nivana.......2007-08-07
I have had the extreme good fortune to listen to two extraordinary works of art in just that many days. Yesterday I listened to the 25th anniversary release of "Big Science" which pushed the musical experience to the edge. Today the musical deluge was more front and center (but in no way ordinary)..."Lumiere" by the Bob Brozman Orchestra. The Bob Brozman Orchestra is Bob Brozman playing by my count 31 instruments mostly acoustic guitar like instruments from all over the world layered (edited) to create twelve very exceptional musical works. I can not see how anyone with any musical interest would not be both moved and captivated by this CD. And anyone with a deep interest in music will find the accompanying descriptions and notes all the more fascinating. The quality of the performances and the sound is really amazing. I did not want it to end. Like Bradley Walker's debut album "Highway of Dreams" and Michael Brecker's "Pilgrimage," this may be one of the best musical creations this decade. Although none of these albums are of a popular genre, the quality of these pieces runs so deep.
Trust in Bob.......2007-07-19
Like Bob Brozman? Want to hear alot of him without knowing it? Lumiere is your album. I wasn't sure what I thought of the concept of this album when I first saw it. Would it be Blues Reflex (a great album) on steroids? I had a spot of great luck and was able to get this album the day of release rather than having to wait for a copy to be shipped the day of release.
If you didn't think Bob was more than just a guitarist before this, you should afterwards. An album made up largely of guitars, all manner and size of other plucked instruments (along with some bass played by a friend, and percussion by Bob and longtime friend/producer, Daniel Thomas) and overdubs could have been a disaster in the hands of most guitarists but this comes together beautifully and naturally. This isn't a bunch of dueling guitar solos coming out of every speaker in the room.
Playing with people like Rene Lacaille, Debashish Bhattacharya, Djeli Moussa Diawara, etc... and first and foremost wanting to serve the music has, I think, caused Bob to find meaningful expression where lesser musicians would just chunka-chunka strum until it's their turn to be in the spotlight. Bob can be the painting, but he can also be the frame, or the mat, or a beveled edge, or the way the different colors of the mat, frame, and picture work together for the greater good of the piece.
That's what this album is about. This isn't thin, linear music. It's open and spacious, with feelings of movement working both side to side and top to bottom. The "band" is called an "orchestra" but he isn't playing all the cover-photo instruments all the time, or on every track (and no sax at all). Lumiere has the feeling of a really happening small group that may be from some sort of primal, tropical, hot-swinging little Italian villa in northern India where the locals fancy Iranians playing Greek ukeleles. Or something like that. It all flows together beautifully, though each tune has its own distinct personality, like sonic photographs from 1 issue of National Geographic.
How I'll grow to rate this in comparison to other Brozman albums over time, I cannot yet say. I've heard it 10 times so far and loved it. It shouldn't be overlooked. He doesn't play a National the way he plays a Weissenborn or a uke the way he plays a charango. You'll hear him explore things in ways you've not heard him play before, as well as hear him enter into familiar strains from previous albums, but presented here in new and unfamiliar ways.
You really do get something special when all these instruments come together in his hands within this context. I don't think he could have made this album with other people. It's also totally unlike a true solo Brozman performance of Live in Germany [Region 2].

Nearly four decades after recording her influential classic Tracy Nelson Country, the former lead singer of Mother Earth--and a legend of white urban blues--returns to the country idiom with a collection of her favorite songs. In a stunning turn, she kicks off the album with an inventive rendition of the western-jazz classic "Cow Cow Boogie," inspired not by the Tennessee Ernie Ford version, but Ella Fitzgerald's 1944 hit with the Ink Spots. (Here, Terry Tucker, Nelson's hair cutter, provides the charismatic black male vocal.) If nothing else that follows this charming performance is quite as grabby, Nelson instead offers up a ton of integrity in her emotionally resonant takes on Johnny Cash's "I Still Miss Someone," Jim Reeves's "Four Walls," the Everly Brothers' "I Wonder If I Care as Much," Don Gibson's "Oh, Lonesome Me" (framed as a Cajun caper), and Randy Sharp's elegant breakup song "New Way Out," with its exquisitely pained chorus. Nelson restrains her powerhouse alto--an instrument as authoritative as it is expansive--to take the focus off herself and emphasize melody and lyric. Her natural R&B leanings come to the fore on a reworking of Ernest Tubb's "Thanks a Lot" (shades of Brenda Lee), as well as on the warm and comforting "Stranger at My Door," a staple of her live repertoire for years. But the Wisconsin native best proves her understanding of the country genre on "Salt of the Earth," a song she co-wrote with Alice Newman Vestal and Guy Clark, who also contributes an affecting, if creaky, recitation. In recounting the plights of her Dickson, Tennessee, neighbors, all of whom lived by their "strong mind/simple creed," she forges a rock-solid connection to country's core--front-porch story songs about family and friends, life and death. Like all the music that pours out of her, Nelson's paean comes from the soul. --Alanna Nash
Customer Reviews:
After 38 Years, Tracy Sings Country - Again.......2007-07-28
Tracy Nelson possesses a voice that is almost super-human, so powerful that no mere recording can ever quite capture it. She recently described herself as "a freak of nature" a self-deprecating portrait that is actually quite accurate, given the amazingly high volume she achieves with seeming ease. From the beginning of her career, she has recorded in a dizzying spiral of styles, often mixing Blues, R & B and Gospel-tinged Country-Rock in a single release, long before others began to blur the lines between musical genres. Today known as an icon of roots music, she seems content (as always) to perform for anyone who will listen, never compromising her vision or convictions. Her propensity to champion obscure songwriters has never endeared her to the top-forty crowd, but I for one am glad of it.
Stranger at My Door is her first pure country effort since her legendary 1969 album, Tracy Nelson Country, but this is a different Tracy Nelson album for other reasons. While previous albums have underscored her powerful, soulful voice, she has chosen this time out to let singing take a back-seat to her other talent, that of choosing material that represents songwriting at its finest. Although anyone who has caught one of Tracy's recent recitals can attest that her voice has lost none of its power and depth (including me, having seen Tracy only months ago at B. B. Kings in NYC), here she has chosen a quieter path, allowing the material to be the real star. I have long opined that Tracy's real talent lies in her supremely exquisite taste, given that her awesome voice is, as she herself has suggested, merely a fact of her physicality. This ability, particularly in the fluff of today's music world, is not to be taken lightly. I have always trusted Tracy to deliver the goods both vocally and in her choice of material, even as I have never been sure which of these talents I admire more.
I had always hoped, with my tongue planted firmly in my cheek, that Tracy might someday record a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald. Considering that Stranger at My Door is being touted as a return to her country roots, it is interesting that the album kick-starts with Cow Cow Boogie, a cowboy-jazz novelty number from Ella's Decca days, featuring an exact recreation of Ella's 1943 swing arrangement with the Ink Spots. Tracy's voice emphasizes a greater western inflection than Ella's jazz reading; as always, Tracy's fresh approach neither invites comparison to the original nor makes you long to hear it. After this light-hearted romp, she gets down to business with a set of traditional country ballads sure to please even the most demanding of purists.
One hallmark of every new Tracy Nelson release is that my favorite track is apt to shift with each listen. Jim Reeves' Four Walls grabbed me immediately, her unusually restrained vocal showing off her ability to convey emotion impeccably, and after this second track, I pronounced the album a winner. But she floored me completely with the next song, Salt of the Earth, a composition of her own poetry, assisted by the able efforts of Guy Clark and Alice Newman. As soon as I heard it, Salt of the Earth became a favorite. A paean to country living and the "strong-minded, simple creed" of clean living, the imagery is nuanced and hauntingly beautiful. A songwriter of modesty, many fans often overlook Tracy's sizable writing abilities, which is partly her own fault; often in concert she will announce the songwriter for each song, then fall silent when she gets to her own material.
After Salt of the Earth, she presents a perfectly-paced rendition of Johnny Cash's I Still Miss Someone, a staple that has been covered by more folk singers than country crooners. Continuing the album's thesis of heartfelt inflection and simple interpretation, she then tackles several more fairly well-known but lesser covered country gems. With Randy Sharp's New Way Out, the Everly Brothers' I Wonder If I Care As Much, and Brenda Lee's R & B tinged Thanks a Lot, she showcases her uncanny ability to pick outstanding material, while forgoing her usual vocal bravado.
The remaining tracks are each interesting enough to merit detailed discussion. To be frank, I have never liked The Three Bells, a song made famous in the 1950's by The Browns, or the schmaltzy, overly sentimental treatments that Chanteuse Edith Piaf recorded in both French and English. Many years ago, the man who introduced me to Tracy's music used to make fun of its maudlin sentiment, once telling me that, "Tracy would never be caught dead recording a corny song like that; she has too much taste and class". Well, aside from the obvious comment of, "Never say never", he didn't consider one truism that I have long since learned to count on - Tracy Nelson is not just any singer. Very few vocalists could take a mushy song like The Three Bells and turn it into a work of art, but that's precisely what she's done. In her hands, its unbridled sentimentality is transformed into a piece so beautiful, that I am almost ashamed of my previous contempt for it. Few vocalists could take a song I had heretofore despised and make me hear new things in it, but Tracy has.
Before closing on an upbeat tempo with her first foray into Western Swing (Oh, Lonesome Me), we get yet two more pieces of country balladry, so stunning in their beauty and Tracy's gorgeous interpretation that (at least for this week) I think I may have found my two favorite tracks. First is the waltz, I Never Loved Anyone More, originally recorded by Eddy Arnold and later covered by Lynn Anderson. The first listen made me freeze my CD player on "Repeat" until I had memorized every word of its achingly beautiful lyrics. Deceptively simple in melody and phrasing, it conjured up memories of lost love I'd forgotten for decades, inspiring feelings both bittersweet and genuine.
But although I Never Loved Anyone More is sufficient for me to declare this release a satisfying success, and possibly her strongest album since her 1996 gem, Move On, there is still one more winner - the title track. Stranger at My Door proves that, at age 62, Tracy still has what her fans have been raving about for years. I hear things in this vocal that echo Tracy's best recordings of her celebrated golden era, even if many fans cannot agree exactly what period of her career that was. For every fan I've encountered who insists that Tracy's best records were made with Mother Earth in the late 1960's, I find as many who agree with me that her voice and musicianship peaked in the 1990's and continues to this day. Stranger At My Door is a gentle reproach to a long lost companion, a sort of lullaby to rekindled friendship, her voice as warm as syrup on a stack of steaming pancakes, and every bit as delicious.
Before the month is out, I expect to change my mind a dozen times about which of the eleven songs here is the outstanding champion, but anyone who loves country music, or anyone who appreciates dazzling vocals, is sure to be pleasantly surprised by this album. It's taken Tracy 38 years to come full circle and produce a follow-up to "Tracy Nelson Country"; I only hope she doesn't wait that long to record classic country again.

Music That Makes You Smile.......2007-07-14
These are the original arrangements and recordings that caused folks like me to love the 5th Dimension. Their musical blends, harmonies, and arrangements are rare finds these days. This is an excellent compilation if you are a fan of the group.
Not 'square' anymore.......2007-05-07
Growing up in the late '60s, it was decidedly 'square' to like The Fifth Dimension. Nevertheless, their precision harmonies and slick production really etched themselves into the 60's collective consciousness.
40 years later, it's okay to admit that they are part of the soundtrack of a great many lives, and this collection covers the high points without beating that consciousness to death.
A real trip down memory lane!
Great Real R&B Music.......2007-03-04
This is one of the 1st real R&B music groups that can really sing.
5th Dimension Classics.......2007-01-29
Great CD with every song you could want, except for one of my favorites... Never My Love.. originally recorded by The Association. The 5th Dimension put their signature sound on it and i've never heard it performed better! Other than this CD omitting this wonderful song, it's a definite keeper!
PLEADING THE FIFTH.......2006-01-07
THE VERY BEST OF THE FIFTH DIMENSION: Call them the black Mamas and the Papas if you want; unbelievably, the Fifth Dimension sounded even whiter than the Supremes. Marilyn McCoo's cool flair with a pop number and the group's knack for covering some of the best song craftsmen of their era (Laura Nyro, Jimmy Webb, etc.) resulted in an unbroken string of Top 40 gems from the late sixties through the early seventies. Although McCoo's husband, Billy Davis Jr. succeeded in piercing the gang's RNB bubblegum with a delicious blast of gospel grit on the second half of AQUARIUS/LET THE SUN SHINE IN (from the smash musical HAIR), for the most part, the 5D were as safe as Three Dog Night and the Grass Roots. The highlights---Up, Up and Away, Sweet Blindness, One Less Bell to Answer, Workin' On a Groovy Thing, Stoned Soul Picnic, Last Night I Didn't Get to Sleep at All---are many here, from five talented performers more than able to take vocal harmony to another dimension. RATING: FIVE BELLS

Ex-Black Crowes guitarslinger Marc Ford's second solo album literally sounds like a classic. With its conflagrant riffing, big six-string tones, blues bedrock, and tunes that swing from soulful pop ballads like "The Other Side" to grinders like "Don't Come Around," the disc recalls a time in the '60s when groups like the MC5 and Humble Pie were at rock's creative apex. The wah-wah-mad instrumental "The Big Callback" also nods to Hendrix, and "Smoke Signals" has the drama of early Neil Young and Crazy Horse. But ultimately Ford's a synthesist, not a copycat, so his unpredictable guitar heroics are as likely to explode into clouds of whinnying feedback as to sprint into marathons of bent, ringing sustained notes and pentatonic scales. Ford's lyrics display a street poet's sensibility that matches his light-sandpaper voice. And as a song interpreter, he shakes the dust off "That Same Thing" with expressionistic jabs of moaning, raging guitar that make the hoary blues chestnut a raw, unexpected highlight. "Just Take the Money" trumpets contempt for his former bandmates. That's not the classiest move, but with his own fiery style at his absolute command, Ford needn't worry about burning bridges. --Ted Drozdowski
Album Description
Marc Ford's first record was with CBS' renowned retro blues rockers Burning Tree in the late 1980's. Burning Tree's self-titled debut album was a much-heralded debut among guitar aficionados and led to Ford being asked to join The Black Crowes.
Ford put his stylized guitar stamp on the Black Crowes' records "The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion,""Amorica" and "Three Snakes and One Charm" as well as making two additional records with the band, "Tall" and "The Band" which were recorded in the 90's and were previously unreleased until 2006.
Ford accepted an invitation to join "Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals" and toured with them, recording their EP and DVD each entitled "Live at the Hollywood Bowl."and won a Grammy Award in 2004 for his involvement with Ben Harper and the Blind Boy's Of Alabama's record, "There Will Be A Light." Ford also appears on Ben Harper and the Blind Boy's Of Alabama's DVD "Live At The Apollo." Two years ago Ford was asked to rejoin The Black Crowes and recorded their "All Join Hands" reunion tour while also continuing to work with Harper, appearing on his 2006 album "Both Sides of the Gun." After the 2006 release of the double CD and DVD "Into the Fog," Live At The Fillmore with The Black Crowes," Ford left the Black Crowes and began making plans to record "Weary and Wired." This significant recording shows Marc's strength as a singer/songwriter, fueled by large doses of his phenomenal guitar work that brings to mind such masters as Clapton, Hendrix and Beck.
Customer Reviews:
Marc Ford is the `blackest' of the Crowes!.......2007-07-13
WEARY AND WIRED is the most rock and roll album from a former Black Crowes member. When I heard Rich Robinson's PAPER I thought that he was the owner of the Crowes' sound, but after listening to Marc Ford I found that I was wrong. He's a gifted funky guitarist and also a good singer.
With influences by Hendrix, Tom Petty and the Crowes, this album is a great choice for any rock and roll, blues or soul lover...let's support the man buying his record, he wont disappoint you!
Surprisingly Good.......2007-07-10
Overall an excellent effort with surprisingly good production. Always a huge Marc Ford fan, particularly with the Black Crowes. After his recent hasty departure from the band, and reuniting with Burning Tree, I wasn't sure what to expect from this effort. Overall, I enjoy nearly all tracks, in particular 1000 Ways, Dirty Girl, Other Side, Currents. The 2 instrumentals Greasy Chicken & Big Call Back are funky and well recieved.
Bravo Marc...you are the man!
Smoke Signals.......2007-05-31
You have to support Marc Ford with his recent difficulties with the over-egotized Black Crowes. He was always the striking noise on Southern Harmony, and it probably wasn't his fault the albums went downhill after Amorica. His first solo album was an interesting venture, sounding almost Jayhawks-ish at times (with Louris as a guest on some tracks), but ultimately over-long.
Weary and Wired has the same troubles, and then some. My favorite cup of tea is '70s meat and potatos rock but somehow this doesn't quite come off. Most songs seem stunted or too simply constructed (if that can be a criticism of such a genre). I guess it's just that they're not that well conceived. I actually don't have a problem with Ford's singing because it's genuine, but his lyrics are bad even for meat and 'taters standards. Guitar-wise there are bursts of brilliance and slightly more room allowed to hear them, but in a world with the likes of Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks I don't know if this will hit the the note overall (to call Ford a great slide player is just a tad silly, and Haynes just seems to conquer at everything).
There's a lot of genre crossing here, from Free stompers to Southern not-quite fried to distorted blues. People have raved about The Same Thing and it is attention grabbing, but ultimately seems to rip off Jeff Beck circa Trust (also The Allman Brothers do a much meaner, improvised version on their recent tours). I guess that's the problem--probably too derivative and again too long (what's the point of Running Man Blues and Bye Bye Suzy, apart from the former's searing solo???).
In simple terms Marc Ford needs a band. Not the Black Crowes. Not Ben Harper. He needs a captivating singer, probably a co-writer, and he needs to thrust himself that way into the limelight. Then he can stick one to the Crowes. Watch out for the wanted ad.
A better guitarist there isn't..........2007-05-16
Marc Ford is an incredibly talented musician. This CD rips from the get-go! I could listen to the tones he gets for days, but his melodies are fantastic as well. Buy it and you won't be dissapointed. I just wish he could find a way to still make music with the Black Crowes.
Not bad, but expected more.......2007-05-09
I've heard Marc with other bands and expected a little more from this solo. Might have been the choice of songs, but it left me wanting more.

Adelmo Fornaciari, aka Zuccero (Sugar), was born in 1955 near Reggio, Italy and grew up fascinated by American blues and R&B. Like so many of his countrymen and women, he exhibits a rare knack for fortunate and widely diverse collaborations. He has worked with Randy Jackson, Narada Michael Walden, Eric Clapton, Brian Auger, Luciano Pavarotti, the New Orleans Gospel Choir, Johnnie Johnson, Pat MacDonald of Timbuk 3, Jeff Beck, Stewart Copeland and Sting, among others. Given this background, it is thus not surprising that the present album, an international multi-million seller, is a star-studded affair guided by the motto "United in diversity, in blues we trust." More comfortable in English than most European singers, the headliner easily holds his own with a roster that includes Sheryl Crow, Macy Gray, Miles Davis, Vanessa Carlton, B.B. King, plus Sting-sponsored Algerian Rai idol Cheb Mami and Dolores O'Riordan of the Cranberries. From the opening, fate-haunted duet with blues legend John Lee Hooker to the closing classically-influenced, heavily orchestrated flight of fantasy sung with both Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli, Zucchero keeps the hits coming. --Christina Roden
Customer Reviews:
it is not quite like watching him perform live........2007-08-07
This is a studio recording of all the familiar songs of his or someone else's in English.
His voice effortlessly surpasses any male vocal artists and set you in the right mood and clear your mind for sure.
But, find his live video clips on-line or DVD, and you will get the instant chill from Mr. Sugar's spiritual sounds.
The compilation of this CD is OK, half of them are great and with the other half, well, having those guest singers sing along, his voice get more pop-like and screened.
Zucchero & Co.......2007-07-12
Zucchero just gets better and better with time.
Fabulous album just like Zu & Co
Definitely worth to buy both !!
The entire track is great not just one song !!
Zucchero,Italian for "sugar"--and sappy.......2007-04-15
One of the typical coffee shop questions goes "Would you like sugar in your coffee?" Considering this album was sold-and played-at Starbucks shops,it's an aural experience of sugar for your coffee.A teeth-decaying amount. It calls for mouthwash, dental floss, and an electric toothbrush.
"Zucchero&Co" has the sappy faux blues singing of Zucchero "Sugar" Fornaci, and his collaborations on this album show his talent-the little he has-being eclipsed by his partners."As I lay down" is haunting because of John Lee Hooker's vocals. "Blue",a sappy song composed by U2's Bono,Zucchero sings with Sheryl Crow, whose talent outshines his.I like Sheryl Crow's music-but this song does her no justice. There are great instrumentals with Miles Davis&Eric Clapton on "Dunne Mosse" and "Wonderful World",leaving the listener to wonder why they're on this album. They've done so much better."Mad about you" is a typical sappy Sting song-luckily he's a better singer than Zucchero. "Pure Love" with Dolores O'Riordan of the Cranberries (well, this track IS a turkey)has a great Celtic sound, but BOTH O'Riordan&Zucchero are annoying singers, with O'Riordan's vocals particularly grating."Pure Love" is a musical depiction of codependence,or the merging of two who lack talent. Finally, there's Zucchero's collaboration with Cheb Mami in "Cosi Celeste." Cheb Mami had a great duet with reggae star Ziggy Marley,an electrifying combination of Algerian rai with reggae.Their talents were as one. Here,on "Cosi Celeste",Cheb Mami's talent outruns Zucchero's by a country mile-yet his part is on the sidelines.
"Zucchero&Co" is sappy adult contemporary easy listening. It's definitely sugary chocolate syrup for the double mocha latte at Starbucks.
A Touch of Class.......2007-04-01
We were introduced to this CD by a friend and were hooked. This was our signature stocking stuffer for the holidays. Whatever your taste of music this CD will certainly have it. From jazz to pop to opera you'll be amazed at this incredible singer and want to tell your friends as well.
Zucchero is a genius!!.......2007-01-12
Is it Joe Cocker? No. Is it Ray Charles? No. It's....Zucchero!! And Zucchero is a genius. Pure and simple. This album is amazing. SO many favorites.... Blue, with Sheryl Crow is beautiful. Cosi Celeste with Cheb Mami is unforgettable. I Lay Down with John Lee Hooker, haunting. Muoio Per Te with Sting, fabulous. Buy this album and enjoy the immense talent and versatility of Zucchero. Ah, so sweet!

Pete Rock loves horns the way other DJs and producers love drums. It's this obsession with funky horn breaks that sets Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth apart from regular hip-hop bassheads. With its crucial James Brown breaks layered between trumpet and sax loops, coupled with the laid-back vocals of Smooth and Rock, Mecca and the Soul Brother--their first full-length--struts back and forth on that line between rap and soul. Rock's production style is peerless, funky on "If It Ain't Rough, It Ain't Right" and sexy on "Lots of Lovin'." Smooth's liquid freestyle delivery (notably on "Straighten It Out" and "They Reminisce Over You") has been echoed in other skilled MCs (see Common's work). And with their combined skills, Mecca stands up without ever really dating itself. --Todd Levin

Die Hard Fan.......2007-07-05
Put simply, They are the reason I like hip-hop." They were ahead of their time. What a shame!" I wish they would make up and be friends again. They had 2 mind blowing complete albums. Most underrated duo. Sad day for society when they split. Hip and cool, yet socially and politically conscious. If your reading this, you guys are sorely missed! The game has never recovered! Amazing music where we don't have to kill each other in every other line. You guys were of a 'different cloth.
-It would be a dream come true for "Return of 'Mecca and the Soul Brother." 5+ stars.

Follow up to the initial release all souled out EP. Mecca and the soul brother is the full length release that displayed the amazing dj skills of the legendary pete rock and the fantastic lyrics of CL smooth. Rhymes, beats , and life are the main themes that make this a dope album from now until eternity. I wish these brothers could get along so they can make a current release that is just as dope as this one.

This is Rap, Rap before the suits decided rap was something they could turn bad, and sell like crack.
Fun, uplifting music, an album you can enjoy from beginning to end. Strongly Recommended!
Ridiculous.......2007-04-06
It's kind of ridiculous how incredible this album is and how it's gotten very little play and hype compared to D4L or Mistah Fab. They made no chart-topping hits, but I guarantee every song is good.

Album Description
Leslie West returns to the Blues Bureau label with "Blue Me," a collection of rock blues rock covers done in the inimitable West style. "Blue Me" contains the kind of guttural vocals and soulful bluesy guitar playing that have established Leslie as one of the greatest talents in the history of rock and roll .
Customer Reviews:
"11" on the dial .......2007-03-16
Leslie West is a fine guitar player but this "blues" record is over the top in terms of guitar tone - consistently saturated (think Neil Young and Crazy Horse at their craziest or Tommy Iommi). It sounds like he took a Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier amp and turned everything to 11. I don't know about you, but I like a little nuance with my blues and that word is not in Leslie's vocabulary. When I listened to this, I thought how great it would be if he would make another Mountain record. Unfortunately, "Never in My Life" does not translate into the blues. Skip this release and get "Leslie West Live!", his 1993 record.
Another good one!.......2007-02-08
If you really like Leslie West you like every note he plays. Not because he's good but because of how his sound makes you feel. These are some pretty nice covers. Green River in particular. If you do like Leslie this is another one you should have...but then again if you really like Leslie you have probably already decided to get it. You won't be disappointed.
Flat and Uninspired.......2007-01-11
I purchased this one because I've been a big Leslie fan for years and the reviews were unanimous five stars. I hate to be the sole dissenter, but I found this CD pretty mediocre and uninspired. It sounds workman-like to me. That Leslie tone is there and there are hints of Duane Allman on the first cut, ZZ Top blues and Govt Mule at times on other cuts. Leslie's voice throughout is that sort of monotone huskiness with no variation. The guitar work is of course competent and has its moments, but there's nothing jaw-dropping here at all and little reason to go back to this CD for repeated listening. It's pretty generic blues and as there are so many technically proficient blues guitarists out there that can do this, I can only give it 3 stars.
Blue Me Away.......2006-11-26
Once in a blue moon an album comes around that's what I call a "total play". Ever cut is a gem. This is one of those albums. Oh yes Leslie has been leading up to this with his last 4 or 5 releases,in which he's gone back to his roots, the blues. This is how I dreamt it would be for Leslie, as he & I grew older. I remember Leslie so well as he was part of my very first concert ever when his first group the Vagrants opened for the Yardbirds 1967 at the Commack arena. Through the years I always thought of Leslie as the tastiest guitarist on the planet. For me one of his best cuts was his live verison of Dreams of Milk & Honey on the Flowers of Evil album. Matter of fact that whole live side is just the best, that is until,Blue Me. The production, his guitar work,& most of all the unmistaken voice of Leslie himself, he just in fine form.I would pay a king's ransom to see him do BLUE ME Live, with the musicians on this album. He's never sounded better. This should go down as a classic, and it's a must have for any Mountain or Leslie West fan. Leslie should have a spot in the Rock'n Roll Hall of Fame. He's a legend.
Blue Me.......2006-08-08
Nobody plays the guitar like Leslie West. Blues to Die For, great. Got Blooze, great. Blue Me, over the top. There is not a bad song on this album. Finally Leslie's great talent is show cased to the T.

Now, here's what you call a break from tradition. After bridging the gap between punk and blues on his collaboration with the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, A Ass Pocket of Whiskey, Mississippi bluesman R.L. Burnside ventures into the world of beats and grooves with Come On In, a series of remix projects with producer Tom Rothrock (Beck, Foo Fighters). The cynics among you may smell opportunism, but Rothrock is sensitive and respectful enough to Burnside's originals to do them proper justice. Even the 4/4 high hat and filtered sound effects of "Rollin' Tumblin'" sound appropriate to the music at hand. Though these treatments--largely instrumental--erase the most of the presence of Burnside's searing vocals, Burnside and Rothrock's adventurousness will win over most to their progressive-thinkin' boogie chillun'. --Justin Hampton
Customer Reviews:
Who Has Been Hiding RL Burnside?.......2007-02-26
Thank you Sirius Radeo and Amazon for bringing us RL Burside. Too bad the local "music (??)" Channels and stores still haven't got a clue in what great music really is.
Its easy to see why "It's Bad You Know" is the most requested song on Sirius Blues.
An acquired taste, but try it.......2006-03-14
This album is kind of like wasabi: it takes some getting used to but if you do, you have a friend for life. You're in for a big surprise if you're expecting traditional blues from this old bluesman. This is techno remix blues, which obviously won't please some, but he pulls it off. Best-known and probably the best tune is "It's Bad You Know", played on WXRT in Chicago, who turned me on to the album. Most of the cuts are musical loops, not all of which work, but overall pretty solid and recommended for anyone wanting something different. Die-hard blues purists need not apply.
Shuck Dub?.......2006-01-07
Dear Mr. Yates: Are you one of those turtle-neck wearing folks with plenty of money and a nose in the air? Are you one of those that believe that the Blues must adhere to some unforgiving rules that you made up? Get off yo' high horse and put down that pipe! The Blues have always been a "blasphemy", a walk downtown, a soulful melody, a harsh reality.... etc... The Blues NEVER did adhere to any rules of musical education. The Blues is the Blues because of a feeling, an attitude. This album has all of that attitude, irreverent as it is. Take off that turtle-neck sweater and listen to these grooves. Blues grooves. The only other artist to take the Blues to this level this decade has been G. Love. No, it's not your daddy's Blues.... but it is Blues.... fun Blues.... New Orleans Blues... Blues the way it was supposed to be: Fun, Exciting, Soulful and NOT standard! Blues with a capital "B".
Only in it for money?.......2005-10-21
I'm laughing my fricken a** off. I read the review by Mr. "Thomas W. Yates" who states below "shame on fat possum....they used to be about documenting a pure, dying art form. now fat possum is all about "updating" the blues to "increase the audience"...fat possum only cares about the $$."
Give me a break! Don't you think Mr. Burnside deserves to make some money for his talent? Don't you think Fat Possom deserves to make some good money too? I sure as heck do. Sounds like your one of those people who wants to "Keep the Man Down". Keep him poor and humble is that it? Give me a break....
Don't you think this may make some younger people find an interest in "The Blues"?
Personally I think its pretty selfish when I see other reviews like that. I think its great that the blues is branching out and reaching out to a larger audience and in the process becoming more mainstream. I think its great that these artists who have been making pennies all their lives are finally making some real money for all their work and talent.
Heck 20 years ago I was wondering if the blues was going to die out but people like Mr. Burnside, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton and others have created a renewed interest in "The Blues".
--Keep It Up!
true alchemy.......2005-10-17
To appreciate this incredible album one must understand that Mr. Burnside was raised in the country and matured in the city; which rationalizes the true alchemy of this electrifying rural/uban mix. The amazing power and energy of this album will stand as R.L.'s burning memorial. So-called blues purists may take issue, but blues music is not "pure" - it is the soul expression of the performer's life experiences... good, bad, pleasurable or painful and everything in between - like this album.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Mississippi hill country patriarch R.L. Burnside's two previous albums dabbled in remixes and trip-hop experimentation geared to the college-rock market. This is a restorative: pure slide 'n' drone blues caught live in January 2001 at Portland, Oregon's Crystal Ballroom. The 73-year-old is joined by his usual jukehouse band, his drummer and grandson Cedric Burnside and guitarist Kenny Brown, who blow sparks behind Burnside's rich honey-and-molasses voice and chunky six-string affirmations. Every time Burnside hits a note, it's a reminder of both how vital an interpreter of the hypnotic style developed by Fred McDowell he remains and how true electric country blues still sounds in its unvarnished state.
There's an emotional resonance that runs through this music like blood, especially when Burnside plays solo. His all-alone performances of "Walking Blues" and "Bad Luck and Trouble" reveal every nuance of his caw-to-keen singing and the sweet way his slide slices right to the emotional core of a lyric. Burnside's off-color jokes and song-ending punctuations (mostly buoyant "Well, well, wells") also give an inkling of the wild-ass grandpa charisma that makes him so appealing on stage. Burnside has, however, delivered better concerts. At times these tempos seem rushed, which sacrifices some of the subtleties of his vocalizing. But Brown unleashes a rabid slide solo on "Snakedrive" that shoots the tune skyward, and he and Cedric display relentless energy and thrust. All of which proves that, with John Lee Hooker now reclining upstairs, R.L. Burnside is the ruler of this music. --Ted Drozdowski

Powerfull, driving and gets under your skin. Buy it and play it loud.
My favourite blues album in my collection.
Electric........2006-12-31
It don't get no better than this. Burnside's best. I wish I could compare it to something, but ain't nothin' to compare it to.
Love it........2006-12-22
Skinny woman though... anyone heard busted by the black keys? Same song... subtly different lyrics. Black keys came out first though... I think.
WOW.......2005-04-10
This cat is good. Mesmerizing beat and tempo, he has the blues in his voice and his soul. A "must buy" for the down home blues lover. This is what it's all about.
Blues meets punk.......2005-01-21
Too often blues albums are simply reheated renditions of Clapton, SRV, or Muddy Waters licks. However, thanks to many young acts, blues is being placed directly on the modern indie stage and finally being heard by new audiences. This group of mavericks just so happens to include a 78 year old John Lee Hooker fan from the hill country of Mississippi named R.L Burnside.
Burnside and his band as a live unit is a work of genius. Burnside has all the trademarks of your classic Mississippi blues singer. The hard rhythms and one-chord riffs of his playing. The droning voice that rips at your soul. His slide licks taken from the Robert Johnson songbook and Muddy Waters. Beyond that, though, is a clear connection to the chaos and speed of any classic punk album. On songs like Skinny Woman and Snake Drive the rhythm is relentless! It is clearly blues, yet there is also a Sex Pistols style spirit and fury within the chaos. Any stereotypes you once had about blues will be torn apart when you hear Kenny Brown's Kinks-meets-Elmore James solos or Cedric Burnside's classic, hip hop styled drumming.
There are very few blues albums as original and fiercely energetic (save perhaps Burnside's own album with Kenny Brown and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion). It is one of the best blues albums I've ever heard and possibly the most fun I've ever had listening to a blues album. This is a blues album for non blues fans! It has a ferocious rhythm that combines the spirit of old blues with the innovations of modern music. Not bad for someone who is probably old enough to be your grandfather!
Also if you like this, check out any other albums on the Fat Possum label. Buddy Guy's Sweet Tea or Stone Crazy! and North Mississippi All Star's Bonaroo album are also great albums in this vein. Any live John Lee Hooker albums are also essential, for the foretell the classics here.
(P.S I understand Burnside retired recently. Please I beg of you R.L if you are reading this, just one more farewell tour!)
