3 out of 5 stars East Side Story, Vol. 1-12 [BOX SET] [LIMITED EDITION] .......2006-01-17

I grew up in Cypress Park (The Avenues) area of Los Angeles in the 50s and 60s. I'm a big fan of Doo Wop/Low Rider style music. I was excited about the "East Side Story Box" release. There is a lot of rare finds and standards in this box set. I was glad to finally get "Talk To Me" by Sunny & The Sunliners.

There are more great songs on these discs but some are obviously recorded from vinyl (surface noise, pops and clicks) or there are better recordings in other collections (the Doo Wop Box sets or the Vee-Jay Records Box set, etc.). The collection has a mix of early R&B and East L.A. favorites. I just wished they`d taken the time to get the best recordings possible.

5 out of 5 stars ALTHOUGH CHANGED STILL A HIT COLLECTION!!!.......2005-05-11

I must say although changed out of all the various artist collections of all oldies this is I have to say is by far the most chingon collection you can get when it comes to all those hard to find rareties like on volume 1 (Jealous) by (Little Royal) or (Victim Of Circumstance) on volume 2 as well as ones like (Why Should We Stop Now) also on volume 2 then theres some such as (The Sly Slick & The Wicked) by (Lost generation) witch I could not find (Thats How Heartaches Are Made) by (Baby Washington) even (Baby There Is Somthing On Your Mind) (McKinley Travis) or (I Need You So) and on volume 6 rareties like the song (Just Because) and (Lonely Guy) and also (Sombody Please) thats is in this collection as well. There are many hits by famous artist like (Smokey Robinson) and the (Four tops) the (Chi-Lites) or the (O'Jays) and manymore hits that were classic 1 hit wonders. This collection has been changed drasticly but we still will tresure the oldies this new collection has brought to us. True that some of these oldies you can find easily but others not so easy the thing that makes this cd collection so great is they mix each cd with a little bit of both rare and easy to find oldies so you get all the good hits divided on all these 12 volumes. I do admit the old (East Side Story) was great I will miss it alot. Some of those oldies were so firme like the song ( These Lonely Lonely Nights) by a group I cant remember. I looked and looked for the song but it was never found sad but true volume 1 got the worst of all the volumes every song on here I believe is new but still chingon none the less. I personally still believe this collection though it has been changed still is a collection we should tresure and remember for the songs on here are still firme hits of there time. I have never seen a oldies collection put together as good as this one. What can I say it was the first then you notice you get the copiers like (LowRider Oldies) witch is not to bad but not nearly as good as this one then you have (body and soul) collection and all these other oldies collections. It's sad this has been changed but still great and a tresure that You must have in your killer golden oldies collections the other collections can never compare!!!

    2 out of 5 stars Nice Try.......2004-03-23

This is not the original East Side Story Collection.More than 50% of the original songs were deleted. Some volumes barely contain one or two of the original tracks, while others are in fact the real deal and contain all the correct songs in the correct order. I do not wish to sound negative, I'm shure the people who made this compilation tried hard to get all the rights to the music, and for this I aplaude them. Althoe I wonder if maybe they should have waited to get the rights to Thee Midnighters songs, who's Cd was released around the same time.
    If I was experiencing this for the first time I would have to say this is a great collection and would give it 4 or5 stars. The replacement songs are good enough to warrant there own volumes such as EAST SIDE STORY GOLD Vol,4,5,6, Etc;
In my defence I do own all 12 volumes on vinyl including East Side Story Gold Vol.1,2,and 3.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Stunning fifth album.......2003-07-11

Make no mistake, East Side Story is the band's early masterpiece. While Sweets was far more experimental (as was Cool for Cats), the band's fifth album focused on songcraft. Originally intended as a double album (with hopes for Elvis Costello, Paul McCartney, Dave Edmunds and someone else who I can't recall at the moment), East Side Story is the band's most perfectly formed album.

Every track belongs here and the arrangements from the startling guitar break on Inquintessence to the organ hook that opens Tempted are brilliant. This is an album that's crying out for a second disc of live material from the same album. The two bonus tracks are a mixed bag. One's quite good and the other is just a so-so remake of an oldie.

By the way, this is exactly the same remaster that was used for the box set Six of One that is now out of print.

4 out of 5 stars The bonus tracks detract.......2003-06-30

This is a wonderful album which is slightly marred by the inclusion of two rather mediocre bonus tracks at the end. I think the industry should re-think the practice of adding tracks to re-issues if they are not up to snuff---as in this case. This alone, however, should not put anybody off buying the disc, which is otherwise a charming piece of work.

    5 out of 5 stars Astonishingly Good - A Dazzling Tour-De-Force.......2002-11-16

"East Side Story" is the greatest album of Squeeze's long, distinguished career. It was their fourth album, and they were on an amazing trajectory, with each album revealing growing craftsmanship and confidence, culminating in this masterpiece in 1981. Difford's wry lyrics remained fascinating, but it was Tilbrook's growth as the music-writing half of the team that was leading them into astounding new realms of creativity. He seemed to be able to absorb all musical styles and spit them out in wildly diverse gem after gem. The songs were becoming ever more melodically complex, but without sacrificing the catchiness that it essential to this sort of pop music. (On later albums he would sometimes be guilty of going too far with the melodic complexity, but no sign of that yet in 1981). In addition, Tilbrook had blossomed into a wonderful vocalist, and his guitar leads had become models of dazzling efficiency. (I defy anyone to name a more exquisitely consise guitar solo than the 12-second masterpiece in the middle of "In Quintessence".) New keyboardist Paul Carrack (of pub-rockers Ace and "How Long" fame) is a smoother fit for Difford and Tilbrook than his predecessor Jools Holland, and his lead vocal showcase, "Tempted", became Squeeze's biggest hit to date. Among the other highlights: the achingly lovely ballad "Labelled With Love", here given a gentle country treatment, but you could just as easily imagine this song sung by a crooner like Sinatra or Tony Bennett (assuming the crooner could pull off Difford's lyrics); the rockabilly "Messed Around", which sounds like it's straight out of Elvis' Sun Sessions; the more typical Squeeze pop-rock gems "Is That Love", "Someone Else's Bell", and of course "In Quintessence"; and the amazing "Mumbo Jumbo", wherein Tilbrook combines 3 or 4 great melodies into a single three-minute classic. Elsewhere there are Beatles-inspired orchestrations and dark sonic experiments. Squeeze hit their peak here, and their albums of the past 20 years have often come close to the heights reached on "East Side Story", without ever topping it. This album is an absolute must-own for any Squeeze fan.

    5 out of 5 stars Quintessential Squeeze.......2001-08-22

One of the biggest albums of the 80's - East Side Story delivers some of Difford and Tilbrook's greatest numbers. Plenty of gems besides the obvious 'Tempted'. Who writes songs like 'Vanity Fair', 'Is That Love', or 'Labelled with Love' these days? Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars Difford looks back without becoming maudlin........2006-09-28

If you're reading this, you likely already know Chris Difford was the lyric-writing half of the Difford and Tilbrook partnership that was Squeeze. This collection is Difford's take on the Squeeze catalog, including some hits and some obscurities. His unique vocal style (best remembered from "Cool for Cats") is bolstered by harmonies from a female singer and the other guitarist. Chris and his backing musicians (two, sometimes three acoustic guitars and a pedal steel guitar) perform warm covers of 10 Squeeze songs on the CD. Sometimes the tempo is altered, changing the original mood of the song, but it never sounds "gimmicky."

I also want to point out that this $13.99 domestic release version includes the same DVD as the $40 import release, even though Amazon doesn't list it in the description. The DVD is wonderful, capturing a December 2005 performance of the same band that plays on the CD, and includes live performances of 16 songs:
    1. Up The Junction
    2. Labelled With Love
    3. Cowboys Are My Weakness
    4. Slap & Tickle
    5. Goodbye Girl
    6. Lamas Fayre
    7. Another Nail In My Heart
    8. Tempted
    9. Pulling Mussels (From The Shell)
    10. Take Me I'M Yours
    11. Hourglass
    12. Black Coffee In Bed
    13. Cool For Cats
    14. Encore: Slaughtered, Gutted & Heartbroken
    15. Cool For Cats
    16. Take Me I'M Yours

Between songs, Chris tells stories about the songs, or the circumstances during which they were written.

The final overall feel of the CD and DVD is a little bittersweet, as Chris mentions in the liner notes that this is his way of closing a chapter in his life (ending rumors of a Squeeze reunion any time soon), but his obvious affection for the songs comes out in the performance, making this a celebration of the band's history, and definitely not a "greatest hits" package designed to make some quick cash.

    5 out of 5 stars Frost's strongest album.......2002-04-24

Okay, Frost must have, what, like seven albums by now? This is the hottest of all of them. That's not to say that he hasn't grown as an artist, because he has. But East Side Story gives you joint after joint, bam, firme rola tras firme rola, this record is no joke. The order of the songs makes a sort of a story--a lot of rappers try to make a movie or whatever, but Frost pulls it off. (Check the movie reference of the title and the little story he makes with the song titles on the back of the record jacket.) The only complaint I have about Frost is that he doesn't kick that many raps in Spanish, sino prefiere meter una suerte de Spanglish en la letra de todas sus canciones, pero hey, si así es como habla el vato, quién soy yo para quejarme. Pase lo que pase tiene skills. You're not likely to mix up his voice with that of some other rapper. Fuhgeddaboudit.

It's a rare pop band that can fit the word quintessence neatly into a song, but the duo of Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook--the heart of Squeeze--do so with ease. There's a good reason that they've been hailed as the best British songwriting team since Lennon and McCartney, and if they've never scaled the heights of fame--or of grandeur--that their forebears did, well, that's OK. East Side Story may not be Squeeze's greatest album--their 1982 hits collection, Singles: 45's and Under, may take that honor--it does have their most memorable song, "Tempted." Strangely enough, the tune was written by then-keyboardist Paul Carrack (with Tilbrook and producer Elvis Costello) and sung by Carrack. The rest of the album remains strong, buoyed by the group's bouncy outlook, Costello and coproducer Roger Bechiran's prodding the group in new directions, and hints of the new-wave-influenced sound Squeeze would develop years later on Babylon and On. --Randy Silver

1 out of 5 stars THE WORST AUDIO VERSION OF THIS CLASSIC, FANTASTIC ALBUM.......2007-06-07

The domestic Squeeze catalog has never received the courtesy of being brought properly into the digital world by the odious conglomerate that is Universal Music USA.

This travesty is the old LP-EQ'd master from the original vinyl album release, and it sucks mightily.

There are two import CD's with far better audio of this great album:

The 1998 UK remaster, which also has two bonus tracks, and the 2007 Japan mini-sleeve remaster, which contains four bonus tracks.

I mention both because the '98 UK import is still in print, readily available, and the less expensive of the two. The '07 'sleeve edition, while available as of this writing, is, as all Japan mini-sleeve CD's are, a limited-edition, and will probably sell out quickly.

The 2007 Japan edition mastering is marginally better than the 1998 UK remaster: The '98 is darn good, but the '07 is the best.

So, if you are considering buying the '07 'sleeve CD, don't hesitate, because as "East Side Story" is the jewel in the Squeeze catalog, it will certainly be gone in the near future.

FYI: On 4/25/07, an eight-album, newly remastered Squeeze catalog mini-sleeve release ("Squeeze", "Cool for Cats", "Argybargy", "East Side Story", "Sweets From A Stranger", "Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti", "Babylon And On", and "Frank") was issued, all of which, again, are limited editions.

      5 out of 5 stars A Pop Masterpiece.......2006-01-12

Simply terrific, literate, tuneful pop music. Not a missed note or thought on the entire LP. 'In Quintessence', 'Woman's World', 'Labelled with Love' are among the best Difford and Tilbrook have penned.

Among their best with Argy Bargy, Play and Frank. End-to-end, a joy to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars High Quality Squeeze!.......2005-04-17

'East Side Story',Squeeze's fourth album is the only one to feature keyboard player Paul Carrack. This album has one big US pop hit but it's a BIG one-"Tempted" not only sets a nearly impossible standard to high songcraft for them but the soulful, gospel drenched piano and organ playing of Carrack give the catchy song a great classic 60's soul feel. The album is fairly diverse although "In Quintessence","Picadilly","Woman's World" and "Someone Else's Bell" stick very closely to Squeeze's classic economical retro 60's pop/rock style.Elvis Costello and Dave Edmunds also make a guest appearance resulting in the wistful country-western of "Labelled With Love"-the album's big British hit and (sadly) it deserved a better American fate-it's a very catchy tune."Vanity Fair" probably sparked some Beatles comparasins with it's symphony orchestra backdrop and classy lyricism and it's a valid statement. The album closes with Glen Tillbrook's catchy rockabilly of "Messin' Around".Meanwhile "Someone Else's Heart","There's No Tomorrow" and "F-Hole" are all great rock grooves with great basslines. So it being said that 'East Side Story' is not without it's adherants this would be an excellent first Squeeze CD to own if you don't have any music by them.If you already do get it anyway-it's still a classic pop album and as close to being as purely that genre as one could want.

      5 out of 5 stars Argy 2.......2005-03-02

This is the Godfather 2 to Argy bargy's Godfather 1. Tremendous follow up. In Quintessence, Someone Else's Heart, and of course, Tempted, are Squeeze at their peak. I had seen them in concert several times during the production of East Side Story, and they were at the top of their game. If you like this, "Difford and Tilbrook" has a good beat. Both albums (they were albums back when I first bought, and I still have) have a "summery" sound. Perhaps it's just me, as I began listening to each summers of 1982 and 1983 respectively!

4 out of 5 stars Probably the best album from Squeeze.......2004-10-31

I love Squeeze and this is probably their best album. (Arguably, that title could go to "Argybargy"). So why only four stars? This album, like most Squeeze albums, has too much "filler" material to be considered a five-star album. If they had ended this album after "Is That Love?", it probably would have been a masterpiece. Even with the backloaded filler material, this album comes very close to greatness. It contains classics like "In Quintessence" and "Tempted", and the overlooked-but-no-less wonderful gem, "Someone Else's Heart". If you only know Squeeze from the radio, you probably have never heard the quirky, haunting, "Heaven" - it is definitely worth a listen. Buy this album, but don't feel obligated to listen to the last four songs. And notice just how much the guy on the album cover (the one furthest on the right) resembles Quentin Tarantino.

4 out of 5 stars Very good to nearly essential........1999-10-16

Most of the songs on this CD have long been deleted by their record company's catalogs, but if you search hard enough you can find a few of these true lost and nearly forgotten gems. Any classic R&B CD must be considered terrific if it has the Lovelites. "How Can I Tell My Mom and Dad (That I've Been Bad)" is marvelous as it explores a young woman's anguish during her out-of-wedlock pregnancy: Powerful stuff for 1969. The music defines the best of 1960's R&B.

4 out of 5 stars Growing Up With The Original East Side Story Albums.......2005-12-04

Growing up with the original East Side Story albums makes it hard to believe that they remastered all the volumes with different songs on them...True there are still some of the original ones on some of them but when I listen to a certain song on a volume and once that song is over I automatically start singing the next song and it's not the one that originally was on the albums. They are still good oldies and I do highly recommend them to anyone. I'm rating it a 4 due to the fact that it's not the original.

5 out of 5 stars you know the deal!.......2002-10-27

look, if you'er mexican, then you know these are wonderful albums.I remember, my older brother having the whole collection, of these fine records. I remember sifting through the covers, and thouroghly examing the covers and absorbing the style, the culture, reliving that moment. Feels damn good! I suggest that who ever ventures into these wonderful albums, make sure you have a drink(or other intoxicating substances) a loved one, and drift away in deep consciouse love. Oh ya, listen to the albums too!
