On his first totally controlled album for his own label, Toby Keith adds another title to his résumé: producer. Throughout, the former Oklahoma wildcatter, who's taken heat for his blustery patriotism and outspoken remarks, seems to be seeking new respect, shifting the focus off of politics and grandstanding and back to his talents as a musician. While his last album, White Trash with Money, found him flirting with R&B and adding horns for a bit more bump, his latest effort finds him nearly in a singer-songwriter mood, taking more time to craft the sound of the tracks and laying down his own harmonies. He's still relying on gimmicky wordplay and cartoon puffery for his full-tilt radio numbers ("High Maintenance Woman," "Big Dog Daddy"), but he also showcases the sensitive, ballad-heavy side of his personality that hasn't been as apparent since the '90s ("Does That Blue Moon Ever Shine on You," "We Were in Love"). He achieves this with some fine cowriting--the winsome "I Know She Hung the Moon" and "Walk It Off," and the lusty "Burnin' Moonlight." He also finds two excellent covers, Fred Eaglesmith's "White Rose" (which combines nostalgia for full-service gas stations with that of a teen's coming of age) and the thoughtful Craig Wiseman/Chris Wallin ballad "Love Me If You Can." The latter, a quiet social commentary, revisits Keith's familiar theme of holding one's ground, but with a far more compassionate approach than he's tried before. Consider it a meditation from a brash king of the hill who hasn't forgotten how to be humble. --Alanna Nash

3 out of 5 stars Sorry, but not that great...it was ok........2007-08-03

I honestly think that Toby Keith, who once was country, is no longer even trying to be country....might not be his fault...a lot of todays country is more like toned down pop music...

There is nothing better than country music, and if this CD had country music on it, I might like it better...

only song I like is "Hate Me if You Want to, Love Me if You Can"---good song, which is why I rate this a 3.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-08-02

Best Album Toby has done Especially love the WHite Rose. Very reflect of small towns dying.

5 out of 5 stars I wasn't a Toby Keith fan.......2007-08-01

I was not a Toby Keith fan until I saw him in concert at Jamboree in the Hills July 21, 2007. He puts on a great performance. If no one knows what Jamboree in the Hills is its the super bowl of country music. Toby put on a spectacular concert. Toby now has a new fan thanks to Jamboree in the Hills. Thank You Toby for such an awesome show.

4 out of 5 stars Great differentiation.......2007-07-30

Love this CD. There are numbers that rock (like the title song Big Dog Daddy), but also a few slower ballads, bit of real country and in between. And all with this great voice of Toby Keith. Great to listen to in the car. Worth all the costs of shipping and taxes to get it here in the Netherlands.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great One !!!.......2007-07-24

I am a huge TK fan and I think this was one of his best CD's. I have loved every one of his CD's that he has made and he knows exactly what his fans want !! He is an awesome performer and puts on great concerts and always stays true to himself !!

If the reggaeton revolution slowed for a second and you're not sure why, consider the comings and goings of Daddy Yankee: Three years have passed since he lit a Latino fire under the non-Latino world with "Gasolina," and despite the best efforts of vast clusters of tough-talking, body-rocking followers, only he, apparently, can keep it stoked. El Cartel: The Big Boss is a 21-track thrill ride destined to restore reggaeton's lost luster. The first few minutes creak--as intros go, "Jefe" is on the longwinded side--but from there it's a riot of bump-bumps, nemesis-bashing, and quick-tongued braggadocio. All credit to DY for again climbing atop a swirling mass of beats and remembering to swagger appealingly on the way up, but the small army of producers and friends who line up to pay the big boss respects on this disc also deserve their props: Fergie makes an impact on the Scott Storch-produced "Impacto" without forcing it in an overly mainstream direction, "Papi Lover" with Pussycat Doll Nicole Sherzinger busts out a cool bhangra-ragga vibe, and Will.i.am winds up "Plane to PR," a slight but contagious ode to Caribbean senoritas, tight. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

THE KING OF REGGAETON, DADDY YANKEE, returns with his new album "El Cartel: The Big Boss". After international platinum success with his first 4 albums, Daddy Yankee released, "El Barrio Fino", which went PLATINUM in the U.S alone, and solidified himself as the leading pioneer of the reggaeton movement. "El Cartel: The Big Boss" is the follow-up studio album everybody has been waiting 3 years for. Having enlisted super-producers such as will.i.am and Scott Storch, Daddy Yankee more than lives up to the hype and delivers his most multi-dimensional and complete album to date.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good album, inconsistent in production values, a bit too long.......2007-07-27

Best to review it, track by track.

Jefe - What is this, Hammer revisited? As an opener, it sucks. It is not a bad track, though.

En Sus Marcas - nice beat, difficult to understand at times; somehow this is Rompe, Revisited.

Cambio - clever use of rhyme and lyrics, slightly bachateao, so to speak.

Fuera de Control - identity crisis... would have taken the dembow away and leave as a straight hip-hop track.

Impacto - first installment, again, good beat, energetic; second one, less so.

Ella me levantó - a cliché from beginning to end, hate it. Would be loved by the average 15 yo. Sucks donkeys.

A lo Clasico - somehow reminds me of Calle 13's "Se Vale To-Tó". Has Voltio written all over it. Rompe The Third.

Bring it on - freshest track in the whole album... who cares if he's trying to pander to the English speaking audience?

Who's Your Daddy? - great, DY's voice is a bit buried in the mix. A bit too busy, but great.

El Celular - nice, would offend his die-hard fans, but great sounding, even if the lyrics are a bit clicheish.

Ven dámelo - filler track, period. Gasolina sin plomo.

Papi Lover - as a crossover track beat-wise, nice effort.

Qué pasó? - as a crossover track, better effort than Papi Lover, but would tolerate the previous' subject matter better.

Mensaje de Estado - as far as tiraera goes, this is the best curse streak I've heard in a long, long time. W&Y, consider yourselves dissed. My concern is that tiraera is so old by now...

Tensión - lyrically busy, good beat.

Soy lo que soy - autobiographical tracks, nicely written, but spare me the Popeye treatment... I Yam What I Yam, revisited.

Coraza divina - nice lyrics, awful beat. Proves that DY can get serious and not too saccharine while getting personal.

Plane to PR - great beat, really infectious... hate the idea of oversimplifying things and conveying a clichéd image of Puerto Rico, a la Will Smith's 'Miami', but good dance track

Me quedaría - somehow reminds me of Vico C, ol skool. Good.

Todos quieren a Raymond - great subject matter, great lyrical images. Weird beat. I hate the title, he probably was watching "Everybody Loves Raymond" on his first class seat

Overall impression - DY is trying too hard to please too wide an audience, and his talent for lyrics is getting diluted. Should he be making an international impact on the same league as Ricky Martin, Raymond better remember that Ricky's last English album was a miserable stinker, because it was too busy and unfocused. This album is way too long. It consists of quite a few gems buried between a lot of filler. The braggadocio is starting to take its toll, but he's still the best lyrics delivery man in the business. When he's experimental, he's good; when his lyrics are focused, no one can touch him. Beat-wise, this album is inconsistent. Three stars.

3 out of 5 stars Crossover to the American Market Gone Wrong.......2007-07-20

I've always liked Daddy Yankee, since I think he's the best latin reggaeton artist there is right now... but this album was almost like him fighting his roots, since he includes many famous singers (which none has to do anything with latin music), which is something that makes you wonder... for what market was this album really released for... something that makes me mad... since he's famous because of his latin crowd.. not the american one (and he sings reggaeton.. he's not a rapper)

Now speaking of the songs in the album... most of the reggaeton songs are good (except the one with Héctor "El Father", because it sounds like the beat was made in a bathroom with a leaking pipe), they are a little different than the songs we're used to... since the dembow(reggaeton beat) has changed.. and it's too similar to hip-hop (most of the album ), with slowed down rythms. I personally hated all of the hip hop songs in the album (since as I stated before, he's a reggaeton artist)since they sound to be directed to the american audience and not his true fans...

I just hope that's his next album goes back to his real roots... and that in his songs... he stops mentioning that he's awesome

5 out of 5 stars The Big Boss.......2007-07-20

Daddy Yankee has done it again. I have not been able to quit listening to this cd since I recieved it. The music is infectious.

5 out of 5 stars The unbiased opinion of an biased fan.......2007-07-14

I've spent the last 3 days listening to El Cartel: The Big Boss, and I'm happy to report that Daddy Yankee's latest is actually very good. Back track- I picked up Barrio Fino about this time in '05, and truthfully, it took about 3 months to grow on me. Since then, however, it's become one of my all-time favorite CDs, and I still enjoy listening to it. Fast forward- The Big Boss grew on me in about three minutes. What I especially like about the tracks on The Big Boss is the skillful way that DY experiments sound but somehow manages to stay true to his reggaeton roots. The CD doesn't try to be too hip hop and seems to be tailored to an "American" audience without pandering. I found the blend of English and Spanish languages well thought out, playful, and pleasant. When I hit [REPEAT]- Bring it On, Papi Lover, Plane to P.R., Impacto (sin Fergie), and Me Quedaria. Anyway, as some would say "it's Daddy Yankee, so you know it's going to be good!"

4 out of 5 stars Daddy Yankee has done it again.......2007-07-08

El Cartel is a hot cd. It has a different flavor of reggaeton that makes you want to dance endlessly. Impacto of course is the most bangin' track on the cd. Some of the tracks are in English, which allows the non Spanish speaking audience the opportunity to truly appreciate this genre of music and Daddy Yankee's extreme talent. As Daddy Yankee says the King is back!

5 out of 5 stars Really good! .......2007-07-02

I heard big daddy for the first time in 2001! I was blessed by them and so were the entire crew that was with us. Their lyrics are honest and they are really good musicians to boot! On this albumn, the Rich Mullins song "Hold Me Jesus" is my favorite!

5 out of 5 stars This album rocks!.......2007-01-13

I have been a big fan of Big Daddy Weave for a long time, so when I saw their new album, "Every Time I Breathe" at Wal-Mart, I had to buy it. I listened to it and decided that it was one of the best cds I had found in a long time. I have listened to the song "Every Time I Breathe" over and over again and it still moves me every time i listen to it. The other 10 songs are nothing short of excellent as well. A great cd that is a little more mellow than their previous releases but still upbeat with uplifting lyrics. This cd is a definite keeper!

5 out of 5 stars Great Music to the Soul!.......2007-01-12

I can listen to this CD over and over and never get tired of it. It has an uplifting message and a catchy beat. The heart of the music keeps you coming back for more and going higher every time. You'll end up singing along and dancing in your seat.

5 out of 5 stars sweet, sincere band with soft hearts for the KING of Kings!.......2007-01-02

This album is incredible & very well balanced. It comes off a little more mellow than previous efforts, and just as Christ-exalting! Like Chris Tomlin, the vocals are softer and gentler than many bands, but do not lose the punchy edge that keeps big daddy weave the upbeat, Spirit-filled quintet they are. As on stage, so it is with this album, the joy of the LORD flows from the music these guys put together! PRAISE GOD! as they sing on 'every time i breathe', "...everytime i get another glimpse of Your heart, i realize, it's True; that You are so marvelous God! and i am so in love with You!..." 'all for you' rejoices in the miracle of New Life in Christ! 'when i see You' is a beautiful, melodic testament to the transforming power of Christ Jesus in the life of a believer! Praise the LORD He never lets go of His own!!! The bubbling reconstruction of the familiar hymn, 'trust and obey' is really pleasing, and breathes new life into this wonderful, God-honoring song! Of course the remakes of the Maranatha! Singers' 'let it rise', and Rich Mullins' classic, heart-felt 'hold me Jesus', are very rich, also. This is an record full of wonderful treasures. You will not regret buying this as a seasoned fan of big daddy weave, OR as a gentle introduction to this talented and sincere band's records... and DO NOT pass up the awesome experience of seeing them in concert! a WONDERFUL and ROCKIN' time, indeed!

5 out of 5 stars Let It Rise.......2006-09-27

The first time I heard "Let It Rise", which incidentaly was when they performed it live at a concert I was at, I was moved. This is another great album for BDW. Could not wait to grab a copy upon its release. Love the horns on one of the tracks, and the violin too, they add just the right flavor. "Let the songs of the Lord, rise among us!" Thanks BDW!

Grunge angst got old. We wanted to have fun. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy was there, ready with serviceable, pumped-up swing. Their music is straight, uptempo, dance floor jazz. There's nothing particularly original going on, but the sleazy horns and snappy arrangements get the job done. There's nothing campy or tongue-in-cheek either; the music just barrels ahead...like good rock & roll. --Steve Tignor

this has to be my favorite bbvd cd. great to blast in the car for any ride and to dance to.

5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff.......2007-02-03

We used to see these guys play on the Nashville club circuit in the late 1990s, and bought the CD at that time. the energy of their live performances comes through on this New Orleans-style jazz compilation. From the back beat to the great rhythms, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy will have you snapping your fingers, tapping your toes, and wishing you had more of their stuff. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Where did these guys come from?!.......2006-03-01

Wow! If you would like a change in pace from hiphop or rock and want to be transported back in time, check out these guys! This group creates a wonderful mix of New Orleans jazz, swing, and modern story lyrics. I only wish we could have some clubs open up in our downtowns with this sound. This group will make you move and you'll be "swinging" before you notice what's happening.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-02-26

With bands like "Big Bad Voo Doo Daddy" they just don't get better than this. If you want to get in a good mood, lose weight, (I did. I lost 25 pounds with this band)or just feel good, this is the music to buy!!!

Recorded in a single day at Paisley Park, Prince has confounded audiences yet again by recording a progressive jazz album with only four cuts--each named for a point on a compass--and clocking in at 14:00 minutes. If that wasn't enough, there isn't a single lyric on the almost hour-long disc. Like many before him, the musical savant has decided to let the music do the talking. But in Prince's case it does so, brilliantly. He has fashioned a musical lattice of fascinating conversations that are both compelling and eccentric--veering from the anxious and menacing to the soothing and deeply rhythmic--at times conjuring the specters of Sun Ra, at others, strangely Metallica. Begun as a mere jam session among the latest members of NPG, Prince has made his most collaborative record ever as he mostly plays guitar and leads his deft-handed band from the One Nite Alone tour into uncharted territory. They make seamless swings from "North's" ambient cohesiveness--led masterfully by Rhonda Smith's liquid bass--to the almost head-banging lumbering beast of "East," into the smooth elegant jazz of "West," which freefalls from a sinuous rhythmic R&B groove into a majestic and almost funereal slice of brainy pomp rock, before scaling the slippery slope of space rock on "South." It would be tempting to say that this is Prince's homage to his recently-deceased parents' stint in the Prince Rogers Trio, but it is far too forward sounding to only be a tribute. This is a brave step and it sounds remarkably like the future. --Jaan Uhelszki

4 out of 5 stars Good Prince Instramentals.......2007-05-31

This was definitely worth the money. At first I was a little skeptical but as I listened to it over and over again I found a deeper appreciation. I think that I was expecting something else at first. This was similar to One Night Alone but just instrumental.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the rest!.......2006-08-31

As a long time Prince fan, this doesn't disappoint me at all, especially after his Madhouse CDs in the 80s! Prince continues to shine on here with four instrumentals of pure jazz!

4 out of 5 stars Smooth Experimentation.......2006-05-07

The problem with critics in general, is that they tend to always try to compare and completely define what they are critiquing. Take a different approach and start by accepting and feeling what is there. Prince is roguishly experimenting on this album; having a great time and sharing some musical statements with those that would listen. Laid back, smooth, soulful, jazzy, fun and moderately engaging. Shed any concept of genre and simply enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Directions in Music.......2006-04-02

This is a 60 minute terrific cd. I listen to Prince's music for a long time but I have been impressed for this smooth, jazzy, funky joint. Especially recomended to listen to at night with a fine bottle of wine and a cigar.

3 out of 5 stars POWER FANTASTIC.......2006-03-31

N.E.W.S is an incredible showcase of instrumental jam-fest. John Blackwell, Rhonda Smith, Renato Neto and Eric Leeds join Prince in this 56 minute opus! Prince's N.E.W.S is a 4 track instrumental jazz style album with no lyrics. Perfect album when you have a hard day at work and want to relax. Eric Leeds delivers amazing saxophone depth! Rhonda Smith lays down some infectious bass grooves. John Blackwell is on point with solid drum beats. Renato Neto's beautiful piano will take you to cloud 9. Prince makes his guitar gently weep! N.E.W.S. is a power fantastic journey. Allstar musicians come together to create beautiful instrumental music. Quality album...I just wish there were more tracks. Prince's N.E.W.S will take you away!

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy did more than any other band to fuel the sing revival of the '90s, due largely to the group's appearance in the 1996 film Swingers. Since then, the craze has waned, although you couldn't tell it by BBVD. If anything, the combo has approaches their fifth album with more gusto and verve than ever, infusing their old-school jive and greasy horns with a New Orleans sensibility and panache and, in the process, creating their strongest album yet. Although their songs sound like they were lifted right out of the Zoot-suited '40s, the band writes all their own material, taking swing into a raw and modern direction. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy by rights will still be here when the next wave of swing arrives. --Jaan Uhelszki

Growing up in the 50s is what I listen to, but after seeing a live show of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, I bought a CD at the show. After listening to the CD, I bought two more CDs at Amazon.com. The music has a real beat to it, and you can't help but move some with the music. It really rocks. Great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars A 5 star treat indeed that is mmm delish.......2006-07-26

This cd is delightful from beginning to end, full of suprises, swing, New Orleans jazzy jump blues ,and smokey infectious vocals that are smouldering hot. Red hot horn riffs that remind one of Bourbon street. Hot tempos and exotic swinging rhythms. Let this cd voodoo your voodoo.

I can't compliment this band enough. The contagiuos beat and happy rhythms of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy are contagious... Their music makes you want to dance!

I saw them perform recently at the House of Blues in New Orleans. It was an incredible show. Just prior to singing the title track of this CD, Save My Soul, lead singer Scotty Morris told the crowd that he had written the song 14 years ago. He felt he owed a debt of gratitude to the musical tradition of New Orleans. But now, post-Katrina, the song carries more meaning for him and for all who love N'Awlins.

Save My Soul is a fun, soulful, and carefree CD. Buy it. Enjoy it. Share it with those you love.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Hear Oh Yeah in the PC Game Casino Empire!.......2004-10-14

I found this out accidentally! The PC game, Sierra's Casino Empire, which was released in 2000, uses an early version of the song, "Oh Yeah" as background music. I thought it was just a really cool song in a PC game (and, er, the demo, at that!) when I heard it again during the October 11, 2004 episode of the NBC TV show, LAS VEGAS. It made me more curious about the song, so I looked up the lyrics, and found that the song was actually by this truly cool band. Get the CD, buy the PC game!

3 out of 5 stars Prince is just plain Prince........2006-08-09

For better or for worse, the man still has not changed much in the 22 years that I have been a fan of his. I still see that his concerts go big on the most recent material (i.e. things he has with a new album) while alot of the oldies are glossed over and played for about 15 seconds (enough just to get one refrain in):(
I swear to you, this box set is sorta the same old thing you can expect from this man. I paid $50.00 for this and got three CD's worth of music (some great, some so-so and some just overly long stuff) You mostly pay $25.00 for the music and $ 25.00 for the box itself with the booklet inside! I almost feel the rube but I am willing to give this a second chance. So far, not so pleased though:

Prince is a brilliant genius. What can you say he loves to jam. And in one of the CD's "It AINT over", there the man is playing "Girls & Boys". Which come to think of it is almost 8 minutes of him & his band and the only reason this is considered "Girls & Boys" is because the chant of "I love you baby, I love you so much" is said by the audience at the beginning of the song! How is that "Girls & Boys??!?? I love that song, but with no Eric Leeds onstage with him, that song is NEVER to be played! The same treatment is given to "Peach" ANOTHER great song which leaves U thinking "What the hell..?" Prince obviously dances to the beat of his own drummer. Lol And so it goes on.
The second CD has alot of Prince just doing his regular "slow jams" melodies and I swear you will think because you see on the CD listing for "Diamonds & Pearls" and "Do me Baby" but get ready for just 20 seconds of each song (thus, that is considered long enough for a track listing (???)) Then get ready to hear yet another over-long rendition of "Nothing Compares 2 U" and "Anna Stesia". I swear, why does he love "Nothing.." so much? It was never a hit for him! It's his song so whatever...("Adore", "The Beautiful 1's", "Take me with U" and "Raspberry Beret" are given good treatments, but "Diamonds & Pearls", "Free", "Do me Baby" and "Starfish & Coffee" are given the bum-rush jobs)
Obviously, as always the man wants people to know his newer material "Muse 2 the Pharoah", "1+1+1 is 3", "Everlasting Now", "Avalanche" et al are all mostly played their entire length. That's fine, but don't be SO impatient to run through your catalogue so fast that certain songs (new or old) suffer from BEING TOO SHORT!!!!! He USED to take his time with his songs when the concerts were simpler (think Controversy tour 1981), when "Purple Rain" hit, the concerts became more rushed in my opinion.

Save the $50. This set has bad false advertising, plus it's from a period of time where Prince's "Hero" Larry Graham got too much stage time. (I thought Sonny T was Prince's hero???)

From the opening track "Rainbow Children" to the final track "Everlasting Now" you'll be transported to another planet! Song like Rainbow Children, 1+1+1=3, The Beautiful Ones, Joy in Repetition, Take Me With U, Do Me Baby deliver the album. Amazing collection of material that will please the new fans as well as the old ones. Overall, Prince - One Nite Alone...Live! is truly one of the greatest live recordings out there! This album will not disappoint! Solid live material, beautiful music/vocals, over 30+ songs are presented. Will make a great addition to your Prince collection!

I have never heard a live concert of this nature! I am an avid Michael Jackson. Pound for Pound Prince takes his live music to an entirely different level. This music is estacy! This is absolutely a wonderful concert collection that I spent nearly 2 months looking for and then I found it at the Virgin Music Mega Store in Time Square!

I dont need to go song by song... from start to finish its an absolute roller coaster of nothing but music!

Soul, Jazz, and R&B under one roof... too much!

I've also got to say, I wasnt a Prince fan until I saw his concert live in Las Vegas. After that I was hooked!

YOU DONT NEED TO BE A FAN TO HAVE THIS COLLECTION ON YOUR IPOD!

THIS ALBUM KEEPS ME BUSY WHILE ON THE SUBWAY!

5 out of 5 stars What A Way To Introduce Big Daddy Kane (Rating:9 out of 10- -4.5 stars).......2007-02-27

To me, I find Bigg Daddy Kane one of the most talented rappers to ever touch the mic. I've heard very little material from him, probably because I was in dipers when this man was making hits. To me, having "The Very Best Of Big Daddy Kane" is a wonderful starter kit to knowing his legacy back in the late 80's. While listening to this CD, I understand why Kane was such a big name back in the day. His flow was amazing. Every rhyme he says is on point. The linear notes inside really expains in detail about Kane's legacy from the days while he was in The Juice Crew.

Now the songs themselves are great. A lot of the songs are from his first two albums "Long Live The Kane" (1988), and "It's A Big Daddy Thing" (1989), with only a few from "A Taste Of Chocolate" (1990) and "Looks Like A Job For..." (1993). I believe his biggest hit was "Ain't No Half Steppin'" which has one of the best beats I've heard in a minute made by Marley Marl. Every rapper seems to make refrence to that song, and I can see why. Another song that really stuck out to me when I first heard it was "Smooth Operator" which also has a nice beat. And his voice in that song was deep, I see why the ladies loved the man.

We get a few treats here on this album. There is "Wrath Of Kane" that was recorded live from the Apollo Theatre, which has fans screaming at the top of their lungs showing love for Kane. I haven't heard the album version yet, but this one here is good as well. Then at the end of the album we get "Give A Demonstration" that was an outtake from his "Prince Of Darkness" (1991) album. I personally don't see how was an outtake. Hearing that song really shows Kane's versitale lyrical skills throughout that song.

So there we have it. One of rap's biggest icons best songs all here on one CD. This CD is really a starter kit to Big Daddy Kane. A lot of rappers chipped their flow off of Kane, like Jay-Z and Big L (no disrespect) and some people never realized that. All these people who listen to the radio and claim that some artist who debuted some 3 or 4 years ago is the best rapper alive really need to listen to artists like Big Daddy Kane and experience what origionality is all about. I didn't know that Kane was one of the first people to wear jewelery and drive nice cars and get upscale ladies, before everybody and their mother in rap music were doing that. Talk about one hell of a trendsetter.

There are a few tracks I want to hear though that are not on here. I heard he made a song with the late Barry White and that has me curious to what it sounds like. Also none of his songs from his last two albums "Daddys Home" (1994) & "Veterans Day" (1998) are on here...and from what I heard, they were not as good. But if you are a fan of hip hop and haven't heard of anything from Kane, this album is what you should get.

When I listen to folks like Big Daddy Kane, it amazes me that today's rappers think they're "the best rapper alive." You have got to be kidding me! I can't think of one rapper who is on today's "hip hop" magazine covers that can outdo Kane. This man took metaphors, similes, multisyllabics, rhythm, and competition and annihilated them. I love this album. I added his page to my MySpace page and I could just sit and listen to it all day. "Smooth Operator" and "Set it Off" are my favorite cuts on here, but I could let every single one of these songs play out. I must be getting old because I'm at the point where when I want to go to a club, I specify what kind of music the deejay must play for me to even drive into the parking lot. Remember when hip-hop consisted of something past how much your car/jewelry cost and how many hoes you had? Man, those were the days!

Here he is ladies and gentleman the one who put light skin brothaz out of business for good. He had that "Jay-z touch" flow and lyrics were banging. Although CHuck-d and Rakim were the hardest he let them be and no one was in his radar when it came to being smoothe (check out smoothe operator & No half Stepping). Your collection starts here if your a Ma$e and Jay-z fan.

Big Daddy Kane's 1988 debut still stands as a raw classic from one of hip-hop's most fruitful years. The production is end to end brilliant, with Juice Crew guru Marley Marl soundtracking Kane through nine furious cuts (and one absolute stinker, the slow jam "The Day You're Mine"). Marl's production has rarely sounded finer, a gritty chorus of drums and funk-soul samples that have since been immortalized. "Raw," "Just Rhymin' with Biz," and "Ain't No Half-Steppin'" are the certified anthems, but they're not the only highlights. Check the furious "Long Live the Kane" and "Set It Off" for Kane's up-tempo odes to himself. "I'll Take You There" and "Word to the Mother(Land)" were the obligatory (yet heartfelt) Nation nods, mandatory during this brief late-'80s period of Afrocentricity. Though his image would soon switch to that of a smoothed-out new jack playa, the memory of Kane as one of hip-hop's supreme lyrical rulers lives long on this masterpiece. --Hua Hsu

5 out of 5 stars The greatest bragging CD ever released.......2007-07-26

Yes, this is a CD mostly full of bragging, saying he's the best, but he does it well and drops some of the best battling lines ever. Seeing the lyrics will stun you, but his flow is one of the best ever. That's what clinched this record as a timeless record. Let's breakdown the album...

We start off with "Long Live The Kane". Which is a mix of political and battling rhymes. "No I'ma not Chinese/its just rhymes like these/That destroy an MC/with black belt degrees". 9/10

It is followed by "Raw(remix)". The original is what made KANE an underground figure and the impact of that one song was like an earthquake. Dropping jaw dropping rhymes with an untouchable flow. The chorus scratching is crazy. The entire song is filled with great lines and doesn't go more than 3 lines without saying something amazing. 10/10

"Set It Off" is in the same breath but even better flow and a better beat. What makes it better is that it starts right off the bat and the song just flows through. 10/10

Then is the loveman Kane that we will mostly see on his next albums, "The Day You're Mine". Some consider this filler, which I don't get. Yes, its different from the rest of the album, but that's the point. He wanted to cover the four major styles of rap(battling, comedy, political and love). Anyway, yes its cheesy but its a great love song. Kane continues his flow and nice lyrics even though its a different style. 9/10

"On The Bugged Tip" is a great team-up song with an unknown rapper, Scoob. Very nice and both do some rhymes. 9/10

Next is the infamous, "Ain't No Half Steppin'". No words can describe this song and theres a reason its so infamous. "You're just a butter knife, I'm a machete". 10/10

"I Take You There" is the political track on this CD". He's talking about a fantasy place where there is no violence, welfare, etc. Just forever peace and harmony. Amazing stuff. 10/10

"Just Rhymin' with Biz" is just that. They're basically rhyming with no topic. Funny stuff and Biz outshines Kane, crazy uh?. 9/10

"Mister Cee's Master Plan" is a song toward his DJ. Telling him thank you for the times and such. Its a good track but its one of the weakest tracks on this CD. 8.5/10

Another political song, "Word to the Mother (Land)". Very nice, but the beat is weird and brings down Kane. Sounds like he ran out of rhymes and is trying to make a short song, long. Still good but the weakest here. 8/10.

Closing Comments: As you can tell, Kane seems like he ran out of rhymes but the standouts are amazing. If you like Jeezy, don't get this. If you like hiphop, get it. If you wanna know hiphop and its history, get it. If you wanna know where these "battle" rappers got their inspiration from, get it. Classic, golden age hiphop. This is true old school and props to Mr. Marl for providing the production, as always. 5 stars.

-Peace

5 out of 5 stars Long Live The Kane.......2006-09-22

Kane is the best emcee of all times, Rakim, G-Rap, Masta Ace are all nice. But nobody touches Kane. Why? Because he had a veratility that made him ahead of him time. This album isn't the best album of all time, but it's the best album of it's time. Kane outshines everyone, because he can do it all. Nobody else was battle rapping, smoothed out, a pimp and a teacher all on the same album. And Kane was the original sex symbol of Hip-Hop (sorry LL)
"Ain't No Half Steppin" is so smooth, but lyrically Kane kept it raw. "RAW" is as the title says. "Set It Off" shows Kane can rap ultra fast and still come off. Listen to his flow on any song off the album, it's meticlious. He pronounces every word so clearly, I honestly would put his flow on this album, which is 15 years old up against anyone today. And probably would still have it give it to Kane for most incredible flow. Every emcee today was either directly influenced by, or influenced by somebody who was influenced by Kane. He is that damn good, period.

5 out of 5 stars I have got to give it up to Big Daddy Kane........2006-09-01

This classic debut showcase all his talents. When he was young and when nothing was or could hold him back. This album is one of the blueprints of hip-hop. Melle Mel said "hip-hop is to pick up the mic and CRUSH everything in front of you". Kane killed the mic and the rumored beef with the other greatest MC of the era, Rakim, had us on the edge of our seats. Until this day, his rhymes have maintained their intensity and even in 2006, are still considered to be some of the most lethal battle lyrics ever spit. I can't say no more what's already been said numerously.

Every track on 'Long Live The Kane' is a truly classic. The tracks that steps up to me are "Set It Off" "Just Rhymin' With Biz" "Ain't No Half-Steppin" and "Raw."

I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this hip-hop essential to hip-hop fans from every division.

5 out of 5 stars This CD Contains 2 Of Hip Hop's Greatest Songs!.......2006-06-18

Big Daddy Kane is easily one of the top 3 lyricists of all-time. There is no disputing how good his lyrics were, but what separates him from all others (except his equal - Rakim) was his Flow. He took his lyrics and made them into an audio work of art. Listen to him string words together in Hip Hop's all-time number 1 bragging track (Ain't No Half-Steppin') and you are mesmerized by his delivery, then you skip back to the start, hit play and start trying to keep up with Hip Hop's smoothest MC.

This album contained more than just the best bragging track of all-time, it contained another hip hop classic that anyone who calls themself a hip-hop Head must know to be considered a member: RAW. BDK strings lyrics and his flow together with his killer voice over a cathy James Brown drum sample and you have old school magic.

I hate to echo the words of every other reviewer but when they are speaking the truth I don't mind: THIS IS A CLASSIC CD, PERIOD. If you love hip-hop or if you're new to Hip Hop, this is where your collection should start. As other's have said, there is only one filler track, and the rest all rate around 4 stars apiece. Do yourself a favour and avoid the garbage that hip hop is currently putting out and go back to the old school, where the lyrics were as good as the beats, and their was substance over flash.

5 out of 5 stars hip hops best lyricist at his finest.......2005-11-20

There's always an argument over who's the best lyricist in hip-hop. Nas, Jay-Z, Rakim, Eminem, Black Thought, Ice Cube, Biggie and a Wu-Tang member (usually Ghostface) are usually the top contenders. No offense to them, as they're all great rappers, but Big Daddy Kane conquers them all. No one can shift words around like the Big Daddy did with such powerful delivery and an excellent voice (only Ice Cube or Ghostface can match the delivery and Rakim or Kool G. Rap match the lyrics). I've been listening to this album for years and I still can't get all the words to the first verse of "Set It Off" down without messing up.

But the lyrics aren't the only reason to get this album. Marley Marl's production stands the test of time, and the production on "Ain't No Half Steppin" is just brilliant and is one of hip-hop's greatest songs of all time with Kane's mellow flow and clever lyrics. Mister Cee, the DJ, also showcases his skill on the turntables on songs like "Long Live the Kane" with his soul samples and ability to spice up any Marley Marl beat to make it even better.

Put simply, there's a reason this album got 5 mics from the Source. It's a hip-hop classic, and it influenced everything from Jay-Z and Common to Dr. Dre's G Funk era that ruled the early to mid 90s. Pick up this album and "It's a Big Daddy Thing" to hear a master of the microphone rip it from start to finish.
