Beauty Party
Editorial Reviews
From URB Magazine
Call it the Revenge of the Nerds. Sick of letting Puffy have all the fun, Majestic mastermind Mike Ladd gets in touch with his posterior on Beauty Party. "We're gonna bite you," he warns early on, "and then you eat alive." Indeed, there are tooth marks galore on this LP, the follow-up to the more experimental Infesticons project Gun Hill Road. Whereas the first record featured Ladd's broken-glass beatscapes and dystopian word collages, the new album finds the MC riding high over his own pop-influenced instrumentals. Like all of Ladd's projects, this one overflows with incisive social commentary. On "Suburb Party," Def Jukies El-P and Vast Aire skewer the nation's consumerist excess, while on "Platinum Blaque Party," the Majesticons point their phonetic phasers at African America's upper crust. In the end, Beauty Party is more fun than a barrel of cocaine. While conscious rap often comes off as dour, this is a thoroughly enjoyable record, dignified and jiggy all at once. Let's bounce.

There's no better example of American pop culture's hall-of-mirrors ethos than producer Alan Carr's relentlessly buoyant 1978 film adaptation of the stage musical Grease. Inspired by that decade's rampant 50's nostalgia, it now paradoxically evokes the campy 70's excesses that spawned it. That sense of recycled decades in collision is underscored repeatedly on this deluxe, double-disc Grease-fest, especially on the set's second disc of bonus materials that spans vintage singles of the title track (its instrumental B-side) and "Greased Lightnin'," some sing-along karaoke tracks, and a handful of alternately slick/techo-savvy remixes (originally produced for the film's 20th anniversary) that are testament to its enduring, era-defying appeal. The original soundtrack itself has been treated to a stellar digital remastering that fills disc one, and remains a joyous monument to camp, sheer ambition, and exuberant nostalgic illusions. Includes a slip-cased, double-fold-out case and new booklet with complete song lyrics. --Jerry McCulley

You 're The One That I Want.......2007-04-03
The complete Grease experience. This cd is a two disc-set with disc one being the complete soundtrack, while disc two is all bonus material including the popular Grease Megamix. Fans of the movie would want to make this cd an essential part of their music collection.
Prepare to be transported to Summer Nights.......2006-03-26
Well here we are with a great piece of history.
This album has not only captured the spirit of the movie but the essence of a 1970's version of the 1950's. I have seen this play live and yes some things are different. Yet I grew up on the movie. I even find myself singing some of the songs now and then. Of course you will never see me singing "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee." However I do keep this in my car as great driving music. This album is not you can pick apart and say things like missing songs, in the wrong order etc. It sounds and feels just right. There will be many versions yet this one is the Grease - Deluxe Edition [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] [SOUNDTRACK] gives you more information about each of the tracks allowing you to feel that you have inside information and to feel that you know more of what went into the making of each song.
Great Soundtrack & Fun Extras from an Enduring Musical........2004-07-06
I'm enjoying listening to this great soundtrack that I loved as a child after a long hiatus. I had it on 8-track 25 years ago. So it's fitting that I should get the 25th Anniversary Edition on CD. The 24 songs from the movie are just as everyone remembers them, so I'll talk about the Bonus Disc, which contains 10 alternative versions of the songs plus 2 previously unreleased instrumentals from the film.
Track 1 on the Bonus Disc is an instrumental version of the film's theme, "Grease", written and produced by Barry Gibb. Frankie Valli's voice has been replaced by a saxophone. The chorus is vocal, but the voices are not those in the original song. You could use this as a sing-along version, as it would be easy to sing over the sax. Tracks 2-5 are officially sing-along versions. "Summer Nights" includes the chorus vocals from the film and sounds good. "You're the One That I Want" has new chorus vocals of questionable merit. "Sandy" is a new arrangement. It's not as good as the film version, but you can sing along. Track 6 is the single version of "Greased Lightning" that you may have heard on the radio back in the day. It's differs from the original in that the bad words have been replaced for radio airplay. Tracks 7-8 are previously unreleased instrumentals from the film. "Greased Up and Ready to Go" is lively. Tracks 9-10 are mixes that I occasionally hear on the radio. The "Grease Megamix" and the "Grease Dream Mix" are fun, if awkward. Tracks 11-12 are Martian Remixes of "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want". They retain the original vocals, but set them to a Latin rhythm. They make pretty good dance tracks.
This 2-disc set isn't in a jewel case. The case is paperboard with 4 panels that fold out. This is inside of a clear vinyl slip case on which the tracks are written. This isn't convenient packaging. On the bright side, the case won't crack in the mail. Tucked inside one of the panels is a booklet that contains lyrics and credits.
The "Grease: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" is a terrifically fun soundtrack to one of the all-time great movie musicals. And for all those preteen girls who go wild over the movie with each new generation, the bonus material is perfect for parties and horsing around.
If You Love Grease, You'll Love This - Only 1 Major Flaw.......2004-05-15
Disc 1 is like the original album, which I also own. 1 major flaw is that "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" cuts off at the very end of it! I was upset by this, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. Disc 2 is a lot of fun w/some remixes and sing-a-longs, all in all, I'm pretty happy with it being that I'm a HUGE Grease fan. If you like Grease, you'll love this, it's fun. Too bad when they "remastered" it, they didn't catch there 1 mistake. Oh well, at least I have it on another album.

Its muscular aura of international intrigue informed by smart characters, sharp writing, and a sleek cinematic sense, the episodes of the hit Alias often seem more like a chapters of a successful movie spy franchise than mere network television series. Key to achieving that masterful illusion is young composer Michael Giacchino, whose soundtracks range across a dizzying range of musical styles and dramatic undercurrents. This anthology of cues from the show's first season incorporates shrewd, techno-savvy club beats, sweeping orchestral sequences of pounding action, brooding suspense worthy of Bond, and inventive indigenous music of indeterminate nationality. Firmly grounded in rich Hollywood traditions, yet hip enough to keep an ear cocked to pulsing, contemporary styles, Giacchino's TV scores often outshine those of the pricier, big budget Hollywood boilerplate he's competing with. --Jerry McCulley

question.......2006-04-25
ok, as most reviews, said, it is amazing and fits the show perfectly!
but...
does anyone know which episodes/scenes go with each song?
i've tried to watch and listen for them, but i get too into it!
Hear what u see.......2005-08-12
while listenin to this album in every track i feel like i can feel the energy and danger
Perfect soundtrack to a nearly perfect TV show.......2005-03-17
If Henry Mancini and Ferry Corsten collaborated on a TV soundtrack for a spy drama set in the 21st Century, the results couldn't be any better than Michael Giacchino's work on this CD. Giacchino can compose for an orchestra like the best of them, but he's also savvy enough to add a contemporary edge with multiple nods to electronica. Synth pads and drum loops are phased through various low-pass and comb filters on several selections here, resulting in a delicious, chewy-sounding percussive effect. Other reviewers have commented on this being a great exercise CD; I agree and would also add that this is a great CD for driving or browsing through glossy photo magazines.
My favorite pieces on the CD are "SD-6 Dance Party," "Red Hair is Better," and "Spanish Heist." I've no idea who the guitarist is on the latter two cuts, but he's quite good!
I recommend this first and foremost to anyone who fears that soundtracks are a dead medium; Giacchino's a challenging composer and takes some real risks. Alias fans will snatch this up (although it doesn't include any soundbites from the TV series), as will anyone willing to play both techno and retro lounge on their CD players. Completists may not be happy with this CD as none of the popular music heard in the show is reproduced here, nor is the torch song Jennifer Garner sang in one episode. But that's what future installments of Alias soundtrack CDs are for!
Best TV Soundtrack.......2005-01-09
This is well worth your money for any Alias fan, and it's better than most movie scores.
The Best soundtrack EVER from a TV series!.......2004-08-23
I think the title says it all, but it's true. I bought this CD knowing and loving the show and realizing just what the music adds to all of the highly enjoyable adrenaline rush scenes. This CD does not disappoint. I now exercise/kick box to it and if your pumped up by just watching the series, you'll really enjoy playing this CD in your car while driving....just try not to get a speeding ticket because the impulse to floor it will definately be there!!

Director Norman Jewison's original 1975 Rollerball was an odd mix; half action thriller (about a future blood sport that crossbred the most violent aspects of roller derby and hockey), half futurist cautionary tale (about the dangers of all-encroaching corporate power and the decadent elite who wield it). In retrospect, it was all too prescient on both counts. It also marked one of the last major Hollywood forays of conductor-composer Andre Prévin, who conducted the film's pastiche of Bach (the ominous if clichéd Toccata and Fugue in D Minor served as the game's theme), Albinoni (the Adagio is the film's main theme), Tchaikovsky, and Shostakovich. The soundtrack was produced in the wake of Kubrick's epochal uses of classical music in scoring his near-future epics 2001 and A Clockwork Orange, and the inspiration and intent here is obvious. Previn added three brief cues of his own (the evocative, modernist "Glass Sculpture" and the kitschy funk-exotica of "Executive Party" and "Executive Party Dance"). With the London Symphony under his baton, the veteran Previn produces an effective version of the Adagio and wrings appropriate drama from the Russian works as well. --Jerry McCulley

Executive Party.......2004-10-07
I bought this album for the psychedelic lounge "Executive Party" and "Executive Party Dance" tracks. Everything else is classical soundtrack fodder. Two cool tracks does not a cool album make.
It's almost worth having in your collection just for the sake of being odd (a classical album with spiked-gauntlet roller derby warriors in the liner notes?), if that's your thing. Just don't expect to listen to it.
If somebody knows of albums that capture the sound of the two tracks I mentioned above... THAT album would be golden.
Great Album.......2004-05-06
Previn scored a superb psychedelic funk track in "Executive Party Dance". Sparse, with great wah guitar and analogue synth, pick up this album for that track alone!!!
Preston's Tocata IS the Tocata!.......2002-06-28
I've loved Rollerball since I was 10 years old. It's one of my favorite movies of all time and a 70's Sci-Fi classic - truly underrated! I have the DVD and I watch it regularly and it grips me everytime. The Jewison commentary is awesome!
I managed to get a vinyl copy of the album a couple years ago. It was badly scratched, but I did not care.
Why I like the album is one simple reason - Preston's rendition of Tocatta & Fugue in D Minor. In my opinion, it IS the Tocata. No other version by any other artist compares. It was worth the whole album just for that.
It also teaches me that there is good in every situation. Although the re-make of the movie was not received well, without the re-make, I don't know if this CD would ever have been re-released.
Finally!!!.......2002-05-26
After hoping what seemed to be a pointless hope the soundtrack for the mid-70's masterful movie of the same name has reappeared out of nowhere. So Norman Jewison and others finally realized that movie soundtracks like this are hardly released anymore owing an exceptional quality to the enormous use of classical masterpieces on here? Once one knows the movie one relives the accompanying scenes upon playback. Bach's Tocatta in D minor played at nearly perfect pace( the piece is often sped up by organists the world over leaving out the reverberating omniscience of the chords), one imagines the clean silent rollerbal track before speed, blood, and power have been ridden over it. The soundtrack is worth it for this track alone. Several of Shostakovich's works, some more beautiful than others, as well as two seveties party-funk pieces composed by Andre Previn showing that the composer's talents were not only limited to the classical convervatorium of music, but that he also had a keen ear for the contemporary. One can imagine the decadent drugged out rollerballers and their girlfriends mingling with the executives in tuxedos with no-back dresses. The soundtrack is at once a homage to the tragedies of violence and power and their existential effects. The choice of music carries the sheer might of the game scenes as well the quiet reflections that pervade James Caan's character throughout the film.

Majesticons vs. Infesticons.......2003-06-07
Even though this whole album is a big parody of all things mainstream, there is something that makes this album more appealing than the countless rap albums of mainstream today, catchy tunes and all, this album doesn't get on your nerves nearly as much as say...Nelly or Ja Rule, maybe if this album was overexposed like most mainstream artists, i would grow sick of it, and turn my nose to it. but this album has a consistent amount of hot tracks...if you're looking for some fun in your music, and the overall seriousness of underground hip-hop grows tiresome on your, pick this album up pronto....it's mainstream, minus the endless self-deification, womanizing, and materialism (er, it's there, but its making fun of it...which is better)
A very well-done hip-hop satire; bound to astound.......2003-05-17
Mike Ladd's jazz experiments gave the world two fantastic hip-hop albums ("Easy Listening 4 Armageddon" and "Welcome to the Afterfuture"). His experiments with the Infesticons gave way to one of the finest hip-hop albums of the new millenium: "Gun Hill Road", a mind-numbing indie experience. From the lyrical acrobatics of Antipop Consortium's "Quarterback Theme" to the opera-based "Cave Theme", and the triumphant chorus of the lead single "Hero Theme": "God bless the Infesticons / ---- the Majesticons!"
Yet, it wouldn't be until 2003 until we heard a word by the mainstream-lovin' Majesticons. And "Beauty Party" delivers. While the album is a complete satire of mainstream rap, it does something far superior than any parody before it: the album is actually BETTER than the object it's satiring.
The more you know about hip-hop, the better it is. (Take the opening track's hilarity shoutout to put an end to all hip-hop intros: "Alan Greenspan: put yer hands up!") "Piranha Party" actually sounds like it could take on 50 Cent's "In Da Club" any day, while "Fader Party" puts the Neptunes to shame. Pet Shop Boy's-sampling "Brains Party" odes to the absurd overuse of samples these days. "Game Party" out-moneys Cash Money, while "MajestWest Party" shows underground giant Murs in his prime, posing as the king of hip-hop.
The album is stunning in satire, but is simutaniously a very very fun listen. Few albums can compare in breadth and scope. Let's just hope the trilogy-closer Trajecticons will raise the bar yet again.
HOT FOLLOWUP.......2003-02-26
Man after the hilarious concept album Infesticons, Mike Ladd comes up completely unexpected with the alter-ego of Infesticons with the Majesticons! PArty based jams from the enemy of hip-hop, too bad this album is so packed with ill beats, hilarious lyrics and catchy melodies that one will wonder if the infesticons can defeat the majesticons! Quality music all around from one of the best hidden wonders in hip-hop. Oh and too all you backpackers, open your eyes cause just cause the 4 elements arn't mentioned in every line doesn't mean its not hip-hop! ONE!!!!!!!!!!

Pamela Frame reviews Koch International Classics.......2005-09-05
I read with interest the description of "Feminine Escapes", a CD which includes Koch's selections from a CD I previously released on KIC. In fact, Mr. Robert Weirich, Mr. Barry Snyder and I recorded an entire CD of works by Amy Beach and Rebecca Clarke. I do think it was an excellent recording, due in large part to my colleagues' boundless artistry, and the work of my colleagues in the recording studio at Eastman School of Music. I am glad to see that Koch thought well enough of it to reissue parts of it, though they never communicated with me about it. I am happy to report to any who don't know her work that Marin Alsop was aready a wonderful conductor early in her career and has developed into a world class artist. Last, I would caution listeners not to expect to hear me playing the one song (voice and piano) which I am listed as performing with Mr. Weirich, as I am a definitely a cellist, not a singer.
