If this is punk music, then I'm officially queen of the entire world. .......2007-07-04

I really like a couple of songs on this cd (Car Underwater, Remember to Feel Real), but there's a lot of songs that I can't stand (pretty much, everything else).

I think these guys are adorable, but cuteness does nothing for the music (especially if the music sucks). I agree that this cd is hindered by the "theme." Many of these songs are, at best, mediocre - I feel as though they merely fill the space between the "good songs". AFS needed to put as much effort into the rest of the cd as they did in the two good songs - maybe then, I'd have a different opinion.

As for this being "punk music" - such a lie! The only genre it fits in is "EMO," and frankly, it's a bit too whiny for my tastes. I don't hate it - but there's other bands I prefer listening to.

I had never heard armor for sleep before I bought the cd. I love them, and this cd now. The lyrics are so deep, and when combined with the music create a sound that I have been looking for for years. One of the best cd's ever! Great find.

New Jersey's Armor For Sleep has created a lot of noise for a band in existence for such a short time. The band's debut release, Dream To Make Believe, is one of the most anticipated records of the year in the indie/emo world. Armor For Sleep has shared the stage with Midtown, Taking Back Sunday, The Reunion Show and Recover among other scene notables. After the release of DTMB the band will be on the road for the remainder of the summer making stops across the country at key festivals nationwide.

Good to fall asleep to.......2006-02-24

This is an okay album at best. The music is much better than the vocals and lyrics. Many of the tracks have great openings but I am continually disappointed when Ben Jorgensen (vocals) opens his mouth. Also for being classified as emo, there is a lacking of emotion. This album would be better with different vocals.

Great CD.......2006-01-03

I bought this CD after buying there second CD, What to do When you are Dead, and was blown away. While there sophomore effort had some great tracks, this CD is a great listen all the way through. I had a chance to see them play at Penn State a month ago and they are a rocking band life, from the singer, the guitarists, and the drummer. "My Town" is the best song, catchy for the regular artists, but my favorite is the closing song. I would definitly get this CD over their second, and get ready for a great listen. Hope to hear more from these guys in the future.

Good Dreams.......2005-12-03

Full of great melodies, lyrics about sleeping/dreaming (my favorite
past time activities), and Ben Jorgenson's voice. Heavily influensed
by the post-hardcore/emo of Sunny Day Real Estate/Texas is the Reason. I believe this album out does What to do... in almost every aspect (though I still love the new album). The highlights of the
album are Armor For Sleep/Dream to Make Believe, Wanderers Guild, My
Town (I love to run through my town and scare kids), and Slip Like Space.

No I dont think their lyrics are bland. I think the music and lyrics are great, and Bens voice aswell. The lyrics compliment the music. No, it isnt terrible original, but that doesnt make is a bad CD.

A Great CD.......2005-10-06

I love AFS. They are truly unique, and one of the few bands out there that are not a clone of Fall Out Boy or some terrible, talentless, tasteless metal band. These guys have real talent. They play what they feel and damn the consequences. Dream to Make Believe is a very mellow, with catchy guitar hooks intertwined with Ben Jorgenson's heart wrenching vocals. And no, his vocals are not awful, as a certain 'Humbert' said, if you want sh*tty vocals listen to that CD you gave five stars for, The All-American Rejects.

Near perfection..........2001-05-18

Being an instrumentalist, I've never been bothered by the complaints of my friends that Meredith Monk has no lyrics -- like a great, perfectly blended wind ensemble, her cast gives a flawless and nuanced performance throughout. At equal turns ecstasy of beauty, eery and haunting, and laugh-out-loud spritely, the two parts I didn't like on this CD were, unsuprisingly, the improvisational bagpipe and the eery but jarring Madwoman's Song. But with an experimenter like Meredith Monk, not everything will hit with everybody, and these thematically provided appropriate contrast to the unrelenting beauty of the rest of the CD. Ms. Monk's unique style and ever strong voice fit perfectly with the medieval setting. Now, anyone know where to find the movie this is the soundtrack to? I've been intrigued with finding it since the day I got this CD of peace and beauty...

The finest, most fully realized Meredith Monk cd, methinks. The medieval theme does her well, puts her vocal explorations in a context that really brings out the magic in the music. One of the few CDs I know that can completely transform the feel of a room it's being played in. Wonderful.

The inimitable Tauber sings lieder.......2003-02-13

In Volume 1 of this series, Tauber sang from Viennese operetta primarily, the repertoire for which he was best known. In this issue he sings standard lieder recital fare, an area where he was just as talented. But his career as a purveyor of Viennese charm often co-opted his ability to sing 'serious' music, much as being an 'Irish tenor' took over the career of John McCormack. Here, though, he makes up for that, and in wonderful style. Just listen to Schumann's 'Im wunderschönen Monat Mai' or 'Ich grolle nicht' and you'll see what I mean. Or 'Träume' from Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder. I almost forget to breathe when he sings Richard Strauss's 'Morgen.' The only small quibble I'd have is that Tauber's strong Viennese accent sometimes intrudes in literature we generally hear with more standard hochdeutsch pronunciation.

Album Description

Founded in 1971 by video artists Woody and Steina Vasulka, The Kitchen is internationally known as a leading center for video, music, dance, performance, new media and literature. The first institution to focus exclusively on cutting-edge, multidisciplinary works, it has been a powerful force in shaping the cultural landscape of this country. Over the last thirty years The Kitchen has documented every one of its performances with video and/or audiotape. However, in recent years much of this documentation, primarily recorded on what are now obsolete formats, began deteriorating. In 1999, under the leadership of Executive Director Elise Bernhardt, and with the dedication of The Kitchen9s Board of Directors and the help of numerous donors, The Kitchen began an initiative to catalog and re-master its extensive collection of 3600 videotapes. In the fall of 2001, an additional trove of audio recordings from the 1970s was discovered. While these tapes promised rare and exciting music by such artists as John Cage, Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, and David Tudor (in the first box alone!), none of this material could be accessed without proper cleaning and re-formatting and the funds and facilities to do so. A recent collaborative partnership with The Looking Glass Studios and Philip Glass9 label, Orange Mountain Music, has allowed for the restoration of a number of audio reels. This work has been done with the goal of producing a series of CDs, From The Kitchen Archives, with New Music, New York 1979 as the first release. This 2-disc set offers re-mastered recordings from the landmark New Music, New York: A Festival of Composers and their Music, held at the Kitchen9s 484 Broome Street space in SoHo from June 8-16, 1979. The festival, which set a standard for new and contemporary music, paved the way for New Music America, the annual event that emerged the following year in Minneapolis and ran in various cities until 1990. Now 25 years later, these recordings are an invaluable time-capsule, a privileged view/listen into a historic event, initially heard by only a few hundred people. Beyond their historic value they offer brilliant and exciting music by composers now considered masters of the genre, as well as remarkable performances by figures nearly forgotten. While many recordings from the festival could be restored, several gaps remain: concerts that were either not recorded or whose tapes vanished into the ether of the last 25 years. That said, we feel extremely fortunate to be able to release New Music, New York 1979 as our first CD in a series that promises to make available more lost treasures from The Kitchen Archives, uncovering the origins of new music today.

DION after all these years !!! Dion appeared on stage in Miami with Bruce Springsteen 11/23/02 to do a duet of If I should Fall Behind and I went nuts. It was so beautiful and then I found this CD. Although the version of If I Should Fall Behind on the CD is done in a doo wop form, and I preferred it without the doo wop, the rest of the CD is incredible. This is a blues and rock trip through the decades with some of the best song writing and blues material ever. I recommend this CD to everyone and don't have enough words to say just how wonderful it is. I was beaming as I listened to the songs and the lyrics that took me down memory lane and touched me deep in my soul.

I just got this CD a few days ago and haven't stopped listening yet. There are so many really good songs here ... If I should Fall Behind is classic a capella, The 90's is the 60's is awesome, I Knew the Bride really rocks as does Street Corner Saint. The entire CD is great listening. Long live Dion ... the "King of cool".

Worth buying for What's That Sound on its own. Everyone I've played this track to has been absolutely knocked out by it. Even my kids who are 14 and 12, who believe that music didn;t really start before the Spice Girls, sing along to it. It's a 6-minute run through the history of rock, but a lot more than that. Some lovely touches: listen to when he sings "One driving force that woke on Monterey" or "and Eric split the night with his guitar". I also loved If I Should Fall Behind and the rest aint bad. But just listen to that last track. Blows your brains.

Dion...Yes He's Still Around.......2000-01-21

I've had this disc in my collection for a while and every time I play it, it sounds just as good now as the first day I brought it home. I've been following Dion's career for a long time, I've got plenty of vinyl by him too. I saw him and the Belmonts do thier reunion at the Garden back in the seventies, and I met him once at a show in Jersey, he autographed my LP "Return of The Wanderer", one of my most prized Dion items. This disc is very enjoyable to me, he does a great acappella verion of the Bruce Springsteen song "If I Should Fall Behind", just goes to show you the Bronx Boy can still harmonize now just like he did on the Bronx street corners. Another favorite of mine is "Trying To Get Over You", Dion gives it his own "bluesy" flavor as only he can. "The 90's Is The 60's (turned upside down)" is another one of my favorites, Dion compares all the problems of the 60's to the 90's. Dion gives his own rendition of the Dave Edmunds song "I Knew The Bride (when she used to rock and roll). He also recorded "Guitar Queen" for this disc, the first time around was on "The Return Of The Wanderer" LP. If you are a fan of Dion DiMucci, you better get out there and get this one.
