4 out of 5 stars Flashy, Fun, and Flamboyant.......2007-05-31

The Circus March is unfortunately a style of music that is often ignored, yet can be one of the most difficult things to play. Musicians almost have to have a feel for it to achieve the desired effect. Each march contained herein captures both excitement, showmanship, and even a certain degree of comedy that is associated with this style. Listening to these brings back a by-gone era of bearded ladies, roller coasters, and kettle corn. If you play this regularly, you may even begin to smell the peanuts roasting....

5 out of 5 stars stunning musical review.......2005-09-27

This is music I have not heard, or played, for years. Most impressive musicianship. And the tempos are unbelievable! For this size group, it is amazing--and nothing less would be expected.

I am a retired music teacher, and this brought me back to the times when I played in large marching bands, or smaller groups for the local rodeo, as a college student. Great excitement in listening, and being swept away to a time when I had less to worry about.

The music itself has a great affect on me, besides the impressive way in which it is delivered. Great sound. Great precision. Great music that just isn't played or used much anymore. How fun to relive those moments--especially the ones featuring the trombone.

5 out of 5 stars Nice and lively!.......2004-04-28

I was specifically looking for music of the circus and this recording just blew me away. It is clean and well done -- technically speaking. The Eastman Wind Ensemble is spectacular! If you are looking for something that sounds like a circus band, this is NOT it. This is a very professional, high quality recording of some of the best march music ever composed.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds even better than when I first heard it.......2004-03-01

When I first heard the last eleven marches on this recording; I heard them on tape, and I really enjoyed them, this was back in 1988 when I was in the seventh grade. When I moved in the winter of 1988, I lost that tape. I was very sad when I did, and it was not until the summer of 2002 that I saw this recording at amazon; 14 years later still great, and sounds even better on CD than it did on tape. This time was even better, because it has even more marches, in the old tape, it had what on this recording are tracks 17-28. Tracks 1-16 are equally good, this recording is of a great sentimental value for me...I hope you enjoy as much as I have 14 years later....

5 out of 5 stars A staple.......2003-06-14

A great collection of marches not by Sousa conducting by none other than Fennell. You can't go wrong having this in your band CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars No God Like Jehovah- Judy Jacobs Live.......2007-07-07

This cd albumn is simply awesome! It is so full of joy, I can praise God and be spiritually uplifted anytime and anywhere! I find myself remembering snippets of psalms and phrases from the various songs and humming all day long. I had never heard of Judy Jacobs, but I love her voice and her testimonies. Every song has been a blessing to me.

I bought the albumn to hear Agnus Dei....Worthy is the lamb....she sings this sooooooo well! And she also has so many others...Days of Elijiah...God Can Work a Miracle For You.... My God Is....Jesus......every time I start the cd to hear one song, I end up listening and singing to the entire albumn! I give this albumn ten stars!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Singer - Not So Great Presentation.......2006-07-11

I really really like Judy Jacobs and bought her album "Almighty Reigns" at the same time I got this one. Unfortunately, this one isn't as good, in my opinion. For one thing, being a "live" album there is a lot of background noise and you can't hear the main singer as well.
Also I don't care for a few of the songs. My favorite is "Days of Elijah" which was not clear enough to me. I'm not saying the album isn't good but I play and enjoy "Almighty Reigns" much more.

5 out of 5 stars TO GOD BE THE GLORY!!.......2006-05-14

I was reading Judy Jacob's book 'Take It By Force' and was being so blessed by it that I decided to buy this CD. Each and every song either had me dancing, praising or in spirit-filled worship to our Lord. What an anointed woman of God!! Everytime I hear 'Blessing and Honor' my knees get weak and tears start to flow, I've heard 'Days of Elijah' before, but never like this. I've had it for three days and it's been playing for the better part of each one of them. I'm reading about 'violent faith' and listening to awesome praise and worship music, I'm truly blessed and highly favored by the Lord!! I'm getting one for my 'Praise Partner'(s) so they can help me praise the Lord. Wow, I just can't stop raving about this experience!!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-02-01

Judy Jacobs was been a true inspiration to me. I listen to this GOD bless CD every morning beofre I go to work. I feel refresh and ready to go to work and face the days work. Almost everyday I get emotionally and begin to cry and thank GOD. I realize that I have so much to be thankful. I feel strong and thankful throughout the whole day.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely worth it!.......2005-08-11

This CD as well as Judy's other CD's are great. She sings with great conviction because she knows who her God is. Don't hesitate to purchase this or Above and Beyond, or Statement of Faith.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyed very much despite muted scratchy sound on last track.......2007-02-07

I gave this to my father. He was thrilled by the collection of songs. He said the last track was a little scratchy and lower volume but that the sound quality of all of the other tracks was great.

5 out of 5 stars Great Band and Greater Music.......2006-03-18

Having taught music for 41 years, I do appreciate the quality of a good band, good music and a good recording. This series is all three! My only complaint is that the CD's are not long enough. I would like to have them last much longer. Enjoyed them very much!

3 out of 5 stars A Moderate Sampling of Sousa.......2003-12-04

Actually one of the better CDs of the limited Altissimo! line of products. At least we have the Marine band playing Sousa, as it should be, but many of the selections are what we have heard already on countless CDs of Sousa. A few of the selections here are different and worthwhile. The problems we encounter are a mixture of recording styles taken from different internal tracks from the Marine Band Library. These recordings were never intended for commercial use. Hence the un-even sound at times. Also the brief durration of the CD indicates as well that it was never intended for public use. Finally, lack of any worthwhile liner notes tops off a rather un-professional job overall.

5 out of 5 stars Start of a great series for Sousa admirers.......2002-09-07

The President's Own play these like no other ensemble. I don't know what the current occupant of the White House thinks about them, but this wind ensemble is a national treasure in my book. This whole series is highly recommended. They play with more energy than the fine musicians of the Detroit Concert Band who sound a little bored on the complete Walking Frog set. They are a much finer ensemble, playing with greater precision and balance than Kieth Brion's British players on Naxos. The only weakness is in the documentation. There is none. We are not even told who the excellent conductor is. But that doesn't prevent one from enjoying the inspiring performances. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Sousa Played as only the Marines can do.......2001-11-01

This release by Altissimo! is a great collection of Sousa Recordings played by the band that Sousa made great. There are tons of Sousa recordings out there, but none feature the US Marine band. Sousa marches don't sound the same until you have heard them played by the Marines. Sousa wrote many of these marches while bandmaster of the Marines, thus the reason why the renditions of these works are so excellent here. The band playes with a real drive and energy, the likes of which few can compare. While not a large selection of marches, this CD is only volume one of a four volume set of Sousa's music featuring the US Marine band. (...) Now more than ever, with our nation in crisis, we need the inspired music of our great service bands.

5 out of 5 stars Sousa Was THE March King.......2004-08-14

Being a big Sousa fan, I bought all four CDs in this series performed by the U.S. Marine Band. All in all this is a very comprehensive collection from an American icon (or should I say two American icons?). The overall quality of the recording as well as of the musicians is superb. No wonder the U.S. Marine Band is "The President's Own". Stirring stuff, indeed! I was amazed at the number of marches that were included that I had never heard before. Especially interesting and historically significant is the inclusion of selections recorded in the 1890s by John Phillip Sousa and his concert band. This series is well worth the price for band nerds like me.

5 out of 5 stars Some of their best music.......2006-07-03

The music on this album might be the best flowing of all ASMZs releases. The tracks are almost all linked together to give the listener a very smooth listening experience. The vocals are superb with more effects on them, which set these vocals apart from their other releases. The music also sounds as if they are trying to uses a different approach, the album starts off very much like the other ASMZ releases, but as it progresses, the sound slightly alters to give the music a different kind of feel. It still sounds like ASMZ, but it is intriguing how the structure has changed since the band started.
The music on this album (like every ASMZ) is beautiful and slow moving. It takes patience, like the others, but once again seems to fulfill more than most music (in my opinion). The last track, titled The Triumph of Our Tired Eyes may be my favorite ASMZ song. It is terribly beautiful with some incredible lyrics.
All in all, a truly phenomenal album that will be appreciated by anyone who likes ASMZ.

5 out of 5 stars Musicians are Cowards!.......2006-05-11

So screams Efrim in the closing track of "Born Into Trouble as the Sparks Fly Upward," closing an immaculately desgined and created album. Begun as a side-project of the huge Godspeed You! Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion was really just Efrim's way of trying to express more gloom and less doom. Godspeed makes black records, but its black on a grander scale (read: the end of the world). ASMZ focuses more on the lonely, sad, and personal aspects of...well...sadness.

Similarities to GY!BE run rampant. Starting with the name of the band itself, there is an implied level of pretentiousness to this music. The band name that just keeps growing, the syntactical non-sequiturs, etc., serve to throw a distancing spike between the music and the listener. I think that's just what ASMZ are trying to do. By not allowing the listener to connect with the band, the focus is placed on the music, and not those creating it. They become a caricature- larger than life- and thus can serve as adequate vessels for a haunting message. The sentence-long song titles (i.e. "This Gentle Hearts, Like Shot Birds Fallen," one of the shortest titles) serve the same purpose.

As most GY!BE and ASMZ records, there are few words, and those that are present are spoken. The album opens with tape-effects, slowly layering in dual violins, playing a dissonant, terribly sad piece. A 3/4 piano joins as the violins fade out, a minor-key waltz that promotes anything but dancing. Sophie re-joins with her violin, and a cello provides the low-end back-up.

And that was the first four minutes of track 1. Honestly, I could write paragraphs like that for every 4 minutes of this album. For the next 54 minutes, ASMZ take you though sorrow, joy (small amounts), loss, gain, pain and finally...hope. The transitions are perfect, and the music simply drenches you with the slow, sad melodies. The record bends and swirls around a few key hooks, and the instrumentation is all but flawless (as can be expected from these guys).

Time is taken at the beginning of the third track for a monologue read by a young boy. It is, at its surface, a happy message ("Lets have a parade! Its been so long since we've had a parade"), but I think it is being used ironically in this position in the record. The title of the track ("Built then Burnt (Hurrah! Hurrah!"). The parade is only on the surface, but below the jubilation is still a Jericho waiting to fall, and fall it does. I still can't decide how I feel about it. When I'm alone in my chair in the dark, listening to this entire record, it fits perfectly. When I try to listen to the song itself, however, it seems pretty silly. I suppose it is a thematic device, and its really my fault for trying to consider it as a singularity.

The record's final track is entitled "The Triumph of Our Tired Eyes." Honestly, the record would be worth buying if this was the only track it contained. Yes...its THAT good. It is the only track on the album with lyrics...and also the only track on the record that I could call hopeful. The loss and destruction found in the previous seven tracks are finally met...with defiance and hope. "C'mon friends...to the barricades again.."...perfect.

The record (like most of GY!BE and ASMZ's work), is ultimately a political statement. They are fiercely anti-American, and much of their works revolve around what they see as the evil of the United States. Railroads are torn up to build strip malls, and things of beauty are torn down to build Wal-Marts. There is futility in fighting, they realize the bulldozers will eventually come to tear up what has been built, but they build in spite of it (to paraphrase the liner notes). The "barricades" are defiance itself. The message is both disturbing and hopeful, and one worth thinking about

Of course, your appreciation for Efrim's vocal stylings will ultimately determine if you can even find it listenable, but read below, and perhaps you can get past his voice. There is also much debate on the inclusion of Efrim's singing on this album (as opposed to HHLUABSOLSPTCOOR, which was purely instrumental). Though it is dissonant, most often flat, and thin- I think it is perfect for its thematic role. There needs to beauty in the song itself, only in that the message gets through. It is sung by a man tired from the long and losing fight, yet still hopeful through his tears. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Close to my heart........2005-06-15

This is probably my favorite Silver Mt Zion album, the other two registered within my brain being their debut "God Has Left Us Alone..." and their recent, more vocalized "Horses in the Sky". Though I 'might' dare say the other two albums have more climatic moments individually (re: 'might'), "Sparks" is all around the most enjoyable listening experience to be had, and is probably the first album I'd give to someone introducing the band, for multiple reasons.

Simply put, it's gorgeous. The first track is stunningly beautiful. Amazing. Romantically charged and haunting. Silver Mt. Zion simply compose beautiful melodies -- more beautiful than virtually every other band around -- and 'Sisters! Brothers!..." is one of their prettiest. Thereafter, the album follows with another beautiful piece, the angelic and mystical, somber and devestating 'This Gentle's Hearts'... Wonderful, haunting stuff. The third track, likewise.

After the album's initial twenty minutes, however, things change a bit. "Take These Hands..." is a ferociously charged vocal piece filled with various dissonant layers and echoed voices. If anything, it comes as a great change of pace, if not impressing as much musically (though it's still a great piece). 'Could've Moved Mountains', the next piece, might be the slowest on the album, and one definitely need a decent pair of headphones to hear the intricies here; harmonized vocals in different channels makes it a far more interesting listen on repeated, closer listens.

Unfortunately, however, tracks 6 and 7, while admirable, don't do much for me. They recall more of the mood of Silver Mt Zion's initial album, and are a bit too abrasive for me. Furthermore, they simply clash with the generally timid nature of the first half of the album. The latter of the two has some wonder within the chaos, but it's just not enough.

The album ends with a soft, high note, and recalls the beauty of the strongest points of the album. The thing with this album is that there are highs and lows, but the highs are truly high -- near heavenly -- and that's why I award such an album five stars. You've got at least 30 minutes of amazing music, and probably 45 minutes of great music.

If you're a fan of Godspeed you Black Emperor!, get it.

3 out of 5 stars Yeah, It's Alright.......2005-05-14

When I first got this album I was mildly obsessed with it but I abstained from writing a review with the hopes that someday I could view it a little more objectively. That day has come.

This album is certainly not A Silver Mt. Zion's best, but it's definitely not their worst. Efrim's voice is more prominent on this album than it was on the debut, but is less prominent than on later releases. It may seem jarring at first, but it eventually does become endearing. Besides, some of the world's most renowned singers have horrible voices, but they're great writers and why shouldn't they be able to sing their own words? (See also: Bob Dylan, Jeff Mangum, Jeff Tweedy, Conor Oberst...) That being said, the second track is the most monotonous piece of music I have _ever_ heard. The transition between tracks three and four is superb, but my favorite part of this disc is the birds at the end of track four. I don't know why.

Overall, it's an average album from an honest, hardworking group, but it is certainly not their defining moment. I'd advise getting A Silver Mt. Zion's albums in order of release just so you can see the evolution of the vocals (and because they get progressively worse).

5 out of 5 stars In many ways, tops their first album.......2005-04-26

The most obvious thing about this album (aside from the expanded name and band) is that the group is moving further away from godspeed's sound. While there are still similarities between the two groups, mt. zion really establishes themselves as a separte band with this record.

All of the emotions that the group pulled out of you on the first record are pulled out again with this record, but it's a much more intense experience. There's more to the music and to the instrumentation. Of course the artwork is amazing, just as it is with almost everything Contellation releases. If you're just piddling around with a few of this label's releases, you need to stop it and start buying up everything they've released. Some albums are better than others, but they've yet to release a bad record.

4 out of 5 stars Hard Bop Done to Perfection.......2001-01-09

Venturing into the City (New York, of course!)one night last year in search of some tight, hard-bop jazz, I found myself at the hip Jazz Standard club. Having been a jazz fan all my life yet not being familiar with the members of One for All, I was ready for anything. Well, suffice to say that I left the club that night with my copy of Upward and Onward in hand, thoroughly impressed with each and every member of this killer ensemble. From the opening track, "D's Blues" where composer and trumpeter Jim Rotondi leads the pack through a hot, frenetic tirade with dynamite solos by all the members, through to the captivating ode, "John Coltrain" where Eric Alexander's haunting tenor sax phrases steal the show, this disc captures 6 of today's best and brightest at their craft and rewards the listener with straight ahead bop jazz with a few surprises. Veteran Dave Hazeltine plays a commanding piano. One can pick up echos of a young Oscar Peterson in Hazeltine's chord progressions and timing. Peter Wahington's bass is stylish yet subdued. Joe Farnsworth rounds out the rhythm section with a tireless, gritty mastery of the drums. Veteran trombonist Steve Davis shows his versatility by effortlessly swaying between clean, melodic solos and full, rich support work which, quite often throughout this disc, makes the listener feel as if a much larger horn section is backing the group. Giving the whole group direction is the ultra-skilled trumpet and flugelhorn playing of Jim Rotondi. If you're already a be-bop or hard bop fan, or plan to be one, this release will be sure to please.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sousa Via the Royal Artillery!.......2004-11-28

This is promising new series. Keith Brian, known for his spirited versions of Sousa with his New Sousa Band leads here the reknowned band of the Royal Regiment of Artillery from the UK. As the premiere band of the British army, tracing its history back to 1747, this full-sized 49 member band can give Sousa the full power he needs! While many marches are well known, this series promises to explore the lesser known as well. Included are many obscure marches, as well as novelty pieces, hymns, dances, etc. All go to show what a truly versatile composer Sousa was. He deserves to be better known. His music spanned many aspects, and it is quite possible to program a complete band concert on his varied works alone. Naxos deserves much credit for launching this inspired project to record has many varied works. The sound quality for such a budget price is truly great. Hats off to Keith Brian, the band of the Royal Artillery, and Naxos!

5 out of 5 stars A lot of great concert band music for a little money!.......2001-10-22

This is a great recording if you enjoy concert band music and/or Sousa! I especially enjoyed hearing the lesser-known marches and non-marches - Sousa wrote suites, operettas, and more, and they are all very enjoyable. All of these are well-performed and recorded and will have you tapping your foot. A wonderful and inexpensive series (see Volume 2, too!).
