5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music........2007-01-10

I sat back with the lights dimmed and a cup of hot coffee and enjoyed the beautiful haunting music of years gone by. Memories abound.

4 out of 5 stars 5 stars for performance, 4 stars due to omissions.......2006-08-29

Why doesn't this get a perfect five stars?

Simple reason.

The producers at Silva, for wahtever reason, decided to cut down their SHE suites and Hands of the Ripper suites.

On the previous Hammer releases, "Draculas - Classic Horror Films", released in 1993, recorded in 1989, they had seven additional minutes of "Hands of the Ripper" that could have been included on this set.

Additionally, The Devil Rides Out: Film Music of James Bernard, released in 1997, recorded in 1995 and 1996 had about a minute more of additional music from SHE, PLUS about seven minutes worth of suites from Quatermass and X: The Unknown.

Both discs in this new re-issue round out at around 68 minutes, so there was room for some of these omissions.

Silva Screen gets big kudos for a reissuing these recordeings in the remastered HDCD format, but I don't understand these omissions. In fact, one of the tracks included, "Vampire Hunter" isn't even from a Hammer film, and its the only recording on this collection not on previous Silva CD's.

Again, 5 stars for the performances, the 1989 performances with Neil Richardson and the Philharmonia are fantastic. (Dracula, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, Dracula Has Risen From The Grave, Taste the Blood of Dracula, Hands of the Ripper, Vampire Circus.)

Additionally, The Westminster Philharmonic under the baton of Kenneth Alwyn do an excellent job as usual (Kiss of the Vampire, Curse of the Mummy's Tomb, She, THe Abominable Snowman, Quatermass II and Curse of the Werewolf.) Finally, the City of Prague Philharmonic, who get a bad rap more often than they deserve round out hte album and IMHO, deliver the goods, under the trusty batons of Paul Bateman (Scars of Dracula, Frankenstein Created Woman, additionally, Bateman also plays the piano solo on Kiss of the Vampire.) and Nic Raine (The Devil Rides Out, One Million Years BC, When Dinosuars Ruled the Earth, Creatures The World Forgot, The Vampire Hunter)

I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.

Much thanks to producers David Wishart, Eric Tomlinson and James Fitzpatrick and recording engineers Mike Ross-Trevor, John Luard Timperley and Jan Holzner for contributing to these fine historical film music recordings.

5 out of 5 stars "Hammer & Silva...raises the hair on the back of your neck".......2002-04-09

Silva Screen takes us on tour through the castles of Transylvania with a collection of
outstanding scores from James Bernard on Disc One ~ "DRACULA" (1958)..."KISS OF
THE VAMPIRE" (1964)..."DRACULA PRINCE OF DARKNESS"
(1966)..."FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN" (1967)..."THE DEVIL RIDES OUT"
(1968)..."DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE" (1968)..."THE SCARS OF
DRACULA" (1970)..."TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA" (1970)...even though the
blood doesn't flow as easily in "KISS OF THE VAMPIRE", the score from Bernard is
seductive, sensual to say the least for "creatures of the night", masked ball scene blends
atmospheric trance-masquerade themes, intoxicating main title is hauntingly mesmerizing with
"VAMPIRE RHAPSODY", just listen to the piano solo from our character in the film Carl
Ravna (Barry Warren), son of Dr. Ravna (Noel Willman) along with daughter Sabena Ravna
(Jacqueline Wallis), a cult of vampires in early 20th century Bavarian, praying on a young
honeymoon couple...Bernard's rhapsody captures the listeners heart and BLOOD!

Let's look at Disc Two with the other Hammer themes and their composers ~ "THE
ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN" (1957-Humphrey Searle)..."QUATERMASS II"
(1957-James Bernard)..."CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF" (1960-Benjamin
Frankel)..."CURSE OF THE MUMMY'S TOMB" (1964-Carlo Martelli)..."SHE"
(1965-James Bernard)..."ONE MILLION YEARS B.C." (1966-Mario
Nascimbene)..."WHEN DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH" (1969-Mario
Nascimbene)..."HANDS OF THE RIPPER" (1971-Christopher Gunning)..."VAMPIRE
CIRCUS" (1971-David Whitaker)..."VAMPIRE HUNTER" (2000-James
Bernard)...difficult as it may be, there is a stand out ~ "THE CURSE OF THE
WEREWOLF", fine direction from Terence Fisher (director) with an outstanding cast Oliver
Reed (Leon-the Werewolf), Clifford Evans (Alfredo), Yvonne Romain (Servant Girl) and
Catherine Feller (Christina), Hammer's departure from the old stereotype of the beast is
refreshing, Reed's performance as the tormented sole, from man to wolf is touching, the score
by Ben Frankel is tense building at it's best, to say the least, setting the tone and mood for the
transformation with counterpoints is stimulating, inclusive orchestration development for what
lies ahead during a full moon.

Without a doubt the highlight pick hands down is "SHE", composer James Bernard gives of
himself without question, the SUITE takes the orchestra into lilting melodic exercises with
percussion chiming in, the harmonies are hypnotic blends of textured fabric, listen as The
Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kenneth Alwyn display stirring strings and
a solo harp run the scales in "THE ETERNAL FLAME AND THE DESTRUCTION OF
SHE", hold-fast arrangement has haunting echoes of Bernard's constant theme, with a final
beat from a drum in the percussion section.

Must make mention the cast of players that made this possible ~ The Philharmonia Orchestra,
The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, The Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra ~ and
their various conductors Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Neil
Richardson...supported by the illustrious staff from Silva Screen Records LTD ~ Reynold da
Silva (executive producer), David Stoner (associate producer), Gareth Williams (Dolby
Surround/HDCD Mastering) and of course James Fitzpatrick (compilation producer), who
has the knack of developing quality in every Silva Screen release...similar to "A History Of
Horror:From Nosferatu To The Sixth Sense" (SSD-1111/2CD Set), guaranteed to raise the
hair on the back of your neck!

Total Time: Disc One 68:01 on 14 Tracks & Disc Two 68:46 on 14 Tracks ~ Silva Screen

4 out of 5 stars Good Song, but the one remix.............2003-02-13

I like Thunderpuss, I do. But why did they remix this song the way they did?? It makes the song too long, I prefer the five minute extended album remix, I like her laugh part in the long remix, but that's pretty much it. The Thunderpuss remix is too long and repetitive and the overall lyric is uninspired. I miss Jennifer and I think my expectations of this single was just too high. Four stars for the bomb vocal.

5 out of 5 stars Jennifer Holiday Pumps Up The Volume.......2002-01-25

This single which can be the anthem of the headstrong, successful woman of today is the meanest remix ever done by this big voiced powerful diva who can put to shame any oxygen tank ! Holiday has the meanest voice on this face of the earth and can be meaner when she has the best material to scream, shout and curse with every note. This is music at its best that it is the best song to use when you want to run on the treadmill at level 10 ! Holiday pumps up the adrenalin and you'll know that the moment you hear her on this CD !!!! Now, all she has to do is make a new CD of her own because this amazing talent deserves to be heard instead of the vocally challenged teen singers who can't even go beyond a 'D' in the scales !

5 out of 5 stars Get into the power.......2000-02-18

This single contains a wide array of remixing styles, which are sure to please all musical tastes. Track #5 (Thunderpuss 2000 Club Anthem Mix) is almost orgasmic. Any of the songs of this single will infuse you with the power that this woman's voice conveys. The Instrumental version is also very refreshing. In synthesis, GET THIS SINGLE. It is very inspiring, powerful, and energetic...and all for a very reasonable price.

5 out of 5 stars wow, Jennifer!.......1999-09-22

The Woman's got the vocal chords, don't she?! GREAT vocals! The lyrics are not all that great - I wish she would sing a song with really killer lyrics... by the way, SKIP OVER the Urban mixes every time and at all cost!

3 out of 5 stars Great club beats, incredible vocals, lacking in lyrics.......1999-09-16

As an avid Jennifer Holliday fan I was pleased to find she was vocally as talented as ever. She's lost nothing throughout the years. Musically, the club version is energizing! The other versions tend to be mundane. The lyrics are not pleasing or catchy.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31

The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.

5 out of 5 stars Xena;Warrior Princess volume six.......2002-01-09

I am so happy that the last and final cd has come out, now my collection is complete. I am very sad for the show ending, but I am glad to still collect things.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2001-12-25

Well, I have them all by now, but this last one is a great collection, with the added bonus of the music from A Friend In Need.
Just another fine addition to my Xena collection!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional.......2001-11-30

I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month! That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included, especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though, there is a complain:i can't understand, why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song, the cues from the Bacchaen festival, music from Deja Vou All Over Again, where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest! That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style, should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes. It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song, will agree with me!Mmmm!

4 out of 5 stars A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29

To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

this one is a good entry from the early LA gangta rap era

      1 out of 5 stars HA!...who new tairrie was such a poser?.......2004-01-07

i knew this was gonna be a rap cd, but i guess i was just expecting better from tairrie b. (who is currently in the metal band MY RUIN and formerly of TURA SATANA/MANHOLE{though a little bit of rap did shine through on 'all is not well' by tura satana and a few songs once and a while})

this came out in 1990, so just expect some 80's sounding rap with the same drum beats through out every song....

she says things on the cd which on her future bands cds she says the opposite of, like, shes got the perfect body in '90 and anyone who doesnt is not as good as her basically...but on MY RUIN cds with songs like'beauty feind' and 'made to measure' she says, basically, look the way you look and thats ok....AND the part that really got me was she even disses rock'n'roll, her future CAREER....

reminding us that shes white every song gets annoying, i dont know what her point with that is...maybe shes just confused

get this if you like MC Hammer or just want to get everything ever released by the former rap wannabe, metal queen tairrie b

thank god she gave up rap

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-05-14

Kismet contains some of the best music in all of Broadway. Wright and Forrest adapt Borodin's glorious music perfectly, and I second the other reviewer's suggestion that this is the recording to have. Judy Kaye is a particular bonus. The Sony disc with Ramey/Swenson/Hadley is lovely (though Dom DeLuise doesn't belong on it, and mars a few numbers); this one surpasses it, and is more complete.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive complete recording.......2000-10-23

Though the Sony OBC recording has never left the catalogue (for good reasons), and the studio recording in the early '90's with Samuel Ramey, Julia Migenes, Jerry Hadley and Ruth Ann Swenson is a more obviously starry show, this release (formerly TER, now JAY records) is both comprehensive and compellingly performed.

All the principals are superb (Valerie Masterson being at her absolute crystalline best as Marsinah, Judy Kaye a refreshing blast of Broadway legit divadom as Lalume, and all the gentlemen particularly solid), and, as ever in this series, John Owen Edwards' observation of original orchestrations, markings, appendix of cut or revised material, and overall theatrical approach make this THE "Kismet" for both devotees of the work, and newcomers. Highly recommended; if you can put on Disc One without wanting to continue on through the last bonus track from "Timbuktu", you have more will-power than I!

          5 out of 5 stars Great Pop.......2006-09-18

I agree with the other review. This is IMO exquisite pop that yeah does seem kinda like an upbeat Sam Phillips! Her voice floats around, drawls & caresses effectively and the accompaniment is always moving, shifting and cool-- but also accessible I think.
Bright-hued pop that isn't stupid, or weighed down with pretention either. A gem!

5 out of 5 stars Why isn't the world listening to this woman????!!.......2005-11-16

Try to think of the times when a record just jumped out and grabbed you and simply would not let go. Kelley Ryan's (aka astropuppees) newest record is like that....and more. It's a happy record, in a time when happy and fun and easy aren't looked at as values. I'm not going to compare her to other singers*, because that'll not do 'Sugar Beat' justice. This record isn't slick, it's not forced or phony. Yeah, it's a 'girl' singer having fun, singing about fun, and guys and stuff. That can be a very wonderful thing.
          * ok...maybe one....I haven't fallen so hard for a record since Sam Phillips' "Indescribable Wow" many years ago. I know I'm not throwing out a superstar, but if you ever loved that record, then just trust me now.
