With young, British, soul stars like Amy Winehouse, Paolo Nutini, and Joss Stone crashing the American charts, what better time to celebrate the return of one of the original great blue-eyed soul singers, Simply Red's curly-mopped Mick Hucknall? Despite being dropped by its label in 2002, his band has flourished on its own, both artistically and commercially. Stay, Simply Red's third independent release, loses none of the crisp soul-jazz beauty that marked the group's late '80s heyday. It has a younger, fresher feel than 2003's elegant Home, but that does lead to more of a mixed bag. A pair of bite-the-hand-that-feeds protest tunes, "Money TV" and "The Death of the Cool," fall wide of the mark, but Hucknall makes up for it when he lets his shimmering voice rise above the electronic fanfare, delivering the classic love song "So Not Over You." Meanwhile, "They Don't Know" and the lively "Oh! What A Girl" prove that he can still give the new generation of soul singers a run for their money. --Aidin Vaziri

If you love Mick Hucknall's voice, you will not be disappointed. Every song is worth the purchase. All new material keeps getting better. I can't wait for the next Simply Red release.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE this CD!!!.......2007-07-13

Honestly, I did not even know "Simply Red" was still recording. I remember them from the 80's (Holding Back the Years), but can't remember anything from them since then. I was listening to a jazz station last week and heard "So Not Over You". I immediately came home and ordered the CD. I love it!!

5 out of 5 stars Simply Red.......2007-07-11

I was very pleased with the process of this purchase. It arrived in a very timely manner, and undammaged. I was also very pleased with this new CD by Simply Red. It has been many years since their last release, but it was worth the wait. I just hope it does'nt take as long for the next to arrive on the shelves.

4 out of 5 stars Simply Red Returns.......2007-07-06

This album reminds me of the earlier Simply Red works. It is a pleasure to have it on in the background. Be warned though, as in the past, there are songs on this album that will stick in your mind. Good to have Mick Hucknall and the band back.

Pop-soulful in an archaic, '60s manner; mildly provocative at the time of their appearance due to singer Mick Hucknall's uncloseted status; Simply Red are global superstars masquerading as an urban sophisticate cult item. Fans from the U.K. and other countries already know this. But in the States we don't quite believe that a group like this can be suave without being cheesy. America, here's your proof once again: the No. 1 smashes "Holding Back the Years" and "If You Don't Know Me by Now," packed with a smattering of overseas chart hits. But where's "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye?" If you like this one, also try Picture Book, the band's 1985 debut. --Gavin McNett

I have enjoyed the music greatly. I purchased it because whenever I go to San Francisco I put it on and it mellows me out.

4 out of 5 stars Simply Red and the Best!.......2006-10-17

Simply Red was truly a British band of the 1980s. They were introduced to me by Music Television or MTV as it was known to release first with the single "Holding Back The Years," or was it "If you Don't Know Me By Now." "Stars" is also a classic from their heyday. There are other songs that I am not too familiar with like "Money's Too Tight To Mention," "The Right Thing," "It's Only Love," "A New Flame," "You've Got It," "Something Got Me Started," "Thrill Me," "Your Mirror," "For Your Babies," "So Beautiful," "Angel," and "Fairground." Simply Red like most of the bands of the 1980s had their own sound and style. Love the red hair color on the singer and always wondered if it was natural.

5 out of 5 stars Cool album!.......2006-09-05

I heard a lot of these songs at my place of employment over the satellite feed. I just realized that frontman Mick Hucknall has a voice like Jefferson Airplane/Starship's Marty Balin. IF YOU DON'T KNOW ME BY NOW is an excellent cover that was made famous by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes in 1972. HOLDING BACK THE YEARS is somewhat jazzy(I heard it before on jazz stations). MONEY'S TOO TIGHT TO MENTION is awesome. STARS is pretty cool also. When I first heard FOR YOUR BABIES,I thought it was Balin singing. That's why I said he and Hucknall are soundalikes. The other songs are great!

4 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful.......2006-08-24

Sure I had heard a few of the songs, but rest of the songs on this album are equally wonderful. Mick Hucknall is a great singer and I would to see him live.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Red is awesome!.......2006-02-25

This album is a collection of Simply Red's best. It is a great album - would recommend it to anyone who has liked any one of their songs. "Stars" is the best song for me; no matter how many times I've listened to it in the past n years, it is the best. "Something Got Me Started", "Fairground" are also excellent.

Tina Turner's phenomenal reclamation of her stardom is perfectly chronicled on Simply the Best. With the exception of the Phil Spector epic "River Deep, Mountain High," everything included here comes from 1983 on. Turner's iconic voice and bluesy earnestness surface on a cover of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together." She brings a moody sensuality to "I Can't Stand the Rain." Equally adept at rock, soul, gospel, and R&B, Turner makes ordinary songs such as "Typical Male" and "Private Dancer" into extraordinary recordings. There are actually better Tina albums than Simply the Best, but it stands as a useful compilation of her comeback hits. --Steve Gdula

Just good old rythem and blues rock and roll !!!

4 out of 5 stars Tina "turns you on" Turner. A real hit machine from a quality artist.......2006-04-17

Tina sings most of here songs as she`s twisting here soul in painfull directions, but she does it with so much passion, so much flair, that you feel shaken all over listen to it. Track 1 The Best is a good exampel of that. She screams, she nearly spits the message right trough. A good opener.
Track 2 What`s love got to with it it`s my all time Turner favourite songs. It has everything, from the postmodern 80 ths disco style, with the right touches on the keyboard, and the laidback klimpering rythmic guitar. A more sensitive laidback vocal from Tina Turner shows here from a softer side. This is a very upliftin song, which shines with a big S. Track 3 I can`t stand the rain, is more in "nowhere land". It has a certain sting, but it`s not a kick, soul, or heart starter. Track 4 I don`t wanna lose you.Well we are back in "hit song quality" land. The refrain is very good on this one. Track 5 Nutbush city limits is fast and furious in a positive sense. It realy swings and twist you around. Fast. very fast, and Tina voice never slips away. Track 6 Let`s stay together, is more in the middle of the road. An easy come and easy go song. Track 7 Private Dancer has the flair of the 80 th`s. Here voice sounds peculiar on this one. Not to found of this song, sorry to say. Track 8 We don`t need another hero, has much of the quality spark as Track 2. It touches on every right buttons, and has a refrain that realy hit`s a nerve when listen to it. Track 9 Better be good to me is written by Chinn/ Chapman, and you know what you get from these people. Easy come easy go pop music. Track 10 River Deep/ Mountain High, is the "wall of the sound" on this CD. This is old Tina, and is more raw and not too much polished. Not my cup of tea. Track 11 Steamy windows. Tina goes "heavy metal light". Very pulsative this one, and it kicks ass man. That`s for sure.
Track 12 Typical Male, it`s quite rythmic but there you have most of the song in a nutshell. The refrain is anyway quite interesting. Track 13 It takes two, is a duet with Rod Stewart. An interesting switch for a change, but nothing special. Track 14 Addicted to Love is a Robert Palmer hit. Recorded live, but it fit`s Palmer better than Tina. It`s recorded live, but the "live sound" it`s nothing special. Track 15 Be tender with me Baby, is full of passion, but sometimes much of it can be too much, but certainly ok. Track 16 I want you near me, is the lighthearted and funny song . It`s very much summer here and ok for a hot day. Track 17 Way of the world is a forgettable song. Here and there it`s ok, but as a whole it doesn`t spark. Track 18 Love Thing. Heavy metal riffs. Ok singing. But there you have most of it. Anyway most of the time Tina Turner "turns you on" . She`s anyway a real hit machine. This collection is a good intro to here solo stuff from the 80 ths and the 90 ths. And she`s got IT.

Album Description

Simplified features both stripped-down versions of Simply Red's classic songs and fresh recordorm some material with only a piano as accompaniment. "What struck me when I listened back to the performance was just how much the song leapt out at you in those circumstances," he says. Classic Simply Red songs such as "Something Got Me Started," "Sad Old Red," "Smile," and "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye" are reinvigorated thanks to these sophisticated, even jazzy, new arrangements. One of the group's most popular hits, "Holding Back The Years," is beautiful and still lush; recognizable, but with an added timeless maturity. Other songs featured on Simplified include "More," "Your Mirror," "Fairground," and "For Your Babies."

The lead-off track and first single from Simplified is the irresistible, upbeat, and distinctly Latin-flavored "Perfect Love." The Cuban vibe of this sensual new song is amplified by the vocals of Havana-based singer Danae. A Latin feeling runs throughout Simplified, inspired by the band's recent visit to Cuba. In fact, Simply Red is the first English pop band to have played in Havana, as they appeared at the landmark Gran Teatro early in 2005.

Simplified is the follow-up to 2003's highly successful Home, which sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide. That release helped push the band to a level of over 50 million albums sold since forming 21 years ago. Although Simply Red's lineup of musicians has rotated throughout the years, the one constant has been Mick Hucknall, one of the finest male vocalists Britain has ever produced, and also one of its most accomplished, melodic, and prolific pop songwriters.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars What A Treat To Have Made This Album.......2007-05-18

Stripped down jazzy slower versions of old songs from The SImply Red catalog. Fans LOVE things like this, I LOVE this album, perfect for a rainy day alone with some songs that are like old friends. But older, wiser, mature, just wonderful. I Simply LOVE the stripped and simplified version of "Fairground", I love the orginial dearly...the sad slow melody over the Goodmen's drumming. But here it is sung as a ballad. This could have been an old standard that someone like Ella Fitzgerlad would have sung. can't say enough good things aabout this album, it is called "Simplified", but should be called "Timeless". This is the Greatest Hits for the fans, hits ethought. Again, rain falling outside makes this even better. Then again, we are all SR fans here, give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars Great!!.......2007-03-26

The music has a variation of sounds and themes extremely diverse and exciting. This is a great CD -a fan can certainly appreciate the voice and themes, a new listener will turn into a fanatic right after this.
Excellent choice.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Album.......2007-01-22

If you love Mick Hucknall's voice as much as I do you'll be glad you bought this album. He does some of his old songs in a slightly different way which is so interesting, and the new songs are wonderful. Simply Red is simply great!

5 out of 5 stars Simplified and stripped down.......2006-09-06

Simply Red goes easy listening on this album. Every track is either a re-recording or the original master minus percussion. We hear a piano plus a string ensemble on many of these tracks. This is an ideal album for easy listening music fans, especially senior citizens who can't stand the sound of hard rock or heavy metal. Marty Balin clone Mick Hucknall, the band's frontman gives fans a nice collection of hit songs in subtle form.

5 out of 5 stars Hucknel just doesn't stop.......2006-05-27

Simplified brings some new along with old favorites. Simply Red "smoothed" out old classics. The new material is just as good as the 20 year old tunes. A must for any Simply Red fan. And a cd that new listeners will enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A five-star album.......2006-09-06

I give this album five stars because it is so awesome! Simply Red frontman Mick Hucknall has such a beautiful voice that someone might think it's Jefferson Airplane/Starship's Marty Balin singing(they are soundalikes). The track I love most of all is FOR YOUR BABIES. I actually thought once that Balin was performing the song because as I just said,he and Hucknall are soundalikes. The title track is pretty cool and so are the other tracks. FYB was recorded in the same style as Jimmy Ruffin's hit recording(not Paul Young's cover) WHAT BECOMES OF THE BROKEN-HEARTED.

5 out of 5 stars One of the finest pop albums ever!!!.......2006-07-14

Having only been familiar with the hits, I decided to give this album a try. Man, I am so glad I did!! Mick Hucknall has such a great, powerful, emotional voice!! I agree that he could sing the phone book and make me cry (and I'm a guy! HAHA!) "For Your Babies" and "How Could I Fall" are just gorgeous, and the rest is...breath-taking. Please do yourselves a favour and buy this album. You'll thank me later.

5 out of 5 stars Second only to "Life".......2005-12-31

Mick at his best. He had it all going on this one. What a voice. His songwriting was light years above anyone writing even similar stuff. I consider this part of the soundtrack to my life at that time. Do not hesitate to get this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Simply Red- STARS.......2005-09-08

Great CD! I love almost every song! One of my favorites!

5 out of 5 stars DITTO-- STILL SOUNDS GREAT AFTER ALL THESE YEARS!.......2005-04-26

I agree with the previous reviewers-- it may, quite simply, song for song, be the BEST pop album ever.

I personally believe the song "For Your Babies" is the most beautiful song ever written.

It's hard to say what adds more ballast to singer Kelly Rowland's solo debut, Simply Deep--her chart-topping past with Destiny's Child or her insanely sexy duet (and accompanying video) with hip-hop star Nelly on the song "Dilemma." For certain, Rowland will take her place alongside fellow Destiny's Child member Beyonce Knowles as a hip, self-assured R&B force with a terrifically elastic voice, if not groundbreaking material. A slick, mostly upbeat clutch of smoochy urban ballads and he-done-me-wrong laments, Simply Deep sounds expensive and Cristal-soaked, which was doubtless the goal. And there are notable exceptions--"Love/Hate" is a electronically juiced rump-shaker while the poignant album opener, "Stole," stands as a beacon to the underdog, delivered in a voice as striking as the face it belongs to, which is saying something. --Kim Hughes

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good Debut from Destiny's Child alumnus.......2007-05-12

Destiny's Child singer Kelly Rowland had an uphill battle to look forward to prior to the release of her debut solo album, "Simply Deep" in 2002. Commonly considered to be the second banana of her superstar girl group (after cousin, lead singer & multi-media darling Beyonce' Knowles), this was probably considered a vanity project at best, and at worst, a throwaway courtesy by her record label. DC's third lady, Michelle Williams, had already released a gospel CD, which was not expected to cross over. On the other hand, Kelly's was a pop effort--could she really anchor an album by herself? And with Beyonce's debut album on the way--did it even matter?
The answer is yes. Here, Ms. Rowland displays considerable skill, and the material suits her stylistically. There are few diva-wailing indulgences (ala Mariah Carey, and, well, Beyonce')--that's clearly not her thing, and her producers were wise to keep it to a minimum. "Dilemma" was a grammy-winning crossover hit with the popular rapper Nelly, sampling an older Patti LaBelle tune. The title cut is a duet with Kelly's other singing cousin, Solange' Knowles. Most of the rest of the album owes as much to alternative-pop/rock as contemporary R&B, which may be why Urban radio seemed to not embrace it beyond "Dilemma". Despite that, perhaps Ms. Rowland has found her niche'- more of a rock-&-soul-diva in the Tina Turner mold than Beyonce's channeling of Diana Ross. "Simply Deep" is a recommended album.

1. Stole
2. Dilemma (w/ Nelly)
3. Haven't Told You
4. Can't Nobody
5. Love/Hate
6. Simply Deep (feat. Solange Knowles)
7. (Love Lives In) Strange Places
8. Obsession
9. Heaven
10. Past 12
11. Everytime You Walk Out That Door
12. Train On A Track
13. Beyond Imagination
14. Make U Wanna Stay (feat. Joe Budden)

3 out of 5 stars A good kind of different.......2007-02-11

Kelly's CD is pretty awesome. I really like her style on this one---kind of alternative/rock/r&b all wrapped into one. She turns out a beautiful array of tunes. Though in some of the lyrics, she seems a little confused about love...but at that age who wouldn't be? All in all I thought the album was great. It has a unique feel---a quality I can definitely appreciate, and good for one who's definitely trying to distinuish themself from Beyonce'.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Great.......2006-09-06

Kelly shows what singing is all about. Her voice is heaven, her songs are great, a lot more pop-ish than the other Destiny's Child member's solo CDs. "Beyong Imagination" is among the highlights, as well as "Dilemma", "Can't Nobody" and "Train on a Track", just flawless.

1 out of 5 stars Kelly I'm so Embaressed 4 U...U know better.......2006-07-30

I went out and purchased Kelly's album because I bought LeToya album and wanted to compare them. Toya's debut album was very should I say HOT and Kelly's debut album was very should I say not. I was not dissappointed in LeToya nor was I surprised. I was though dissapointed in Kelly and quite surprised. LeToya's album is fasinating, fun and funky from the beginning to the end. Kelly's album is just funk or should I say junk. Kelly doesn't have many party songs just alot of balleds. LeToya has plenty of both. I see know why I didn't buy the album when it came out. I also see why no one I know knows any of her songs but dilemma. Her album was just that a dilemma. Hopefully her next album is fire because forget coming after Beyonce she is coming after LeToya. And right now LeToya is on top of her game. The people who gave her 5 stars must really be diehard Kelly fans because I dont see 5 stars not even close. Kelly really didn't live up to her expectations. Beyonce and LeToya did. I'm just being honest, I'm not a hater I love Kelly but she is better off in the group Beyonce and them aka Destiny Child.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!.......2006-06-27

I haven't bought the album as yet cause i don't want to own a pirate copy. I want the original. I've heard the tracks on the radio and the internet and concluded what i've been thinking all along; "Kelly's a great blessed singer!!". My favourite song on simply deep is the hit with Nelly, "Dilemma" i just love that song. I have it stored on my PC to play whenever i want!!

What i'm now waiting on is for Kelly to bring it like i know she can. I always thought she was holding back when singing. I don't wanna speculate her reasons but Kelly please don't do that anymore. God bless you with your voice, use it to the best of your ability. When you sing, just let him take you places.

I'm looking around for simply deep original album. When i find it, i'll buy it right away and i'm awaiting your next album to hear that melodious voice of yours.

I know you believe in God, just call on him anytime, he's always there. God bless Kelly!! Love you and keep up the good work.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless.......2007-01-02

I don't understand what the story about a deadbeat dad and raising his kid has to do with this album, but hey.

They just don't make music like this anymore. "Jericho" and "Look at You Now" are just as worthy of praise as this album's more famous hit singles. The former of these I truly missed during Simply Red's last European tour, though Mick's great stage presence and repertoire surely made up for it.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Red's debut album.......2006-09-06

At least in America, the British-based Simply Red debuted in 1985,spawning three Top 20 hits from this album,COME TO MY AID,HOLDING BACK THE YEARS and MONEY'S TOO TIGHT TO MENTION. I have to admit that frontman Mick Hucknall is a vocal clone of Marty Balin of Jefferson Airplane/Starship fame. It is possible that Simply Red was nominated for a Best New Artist of 1985 Grammy. I'm sure Sting,Freddie Jackson and Whitney Houston were nominees as well. Simply Red's Elektra Records labelmates included The Cars and Motley Crue.

3 out of 5 stars Simply a great album........2005-09-20

This is what I think of as a great album from an underrated band. Maybe not their best, but well worth a listen. Included is the wonderful and moving "Holding Back The Years", one of their best songs ever, and probably most popular. "Money's Too Tight (to mention)" is another well known song, and rather upbeat. I also really enjoy the cover of "Heaven", as it's one of my favorite Talking Heads songs. The rest holds up well, and is still a good listen after all this time. If you're looking for more than the "Greatest Hits", give it a try.

4 out of 5 stars It Grows on You.......2005-01-24

The first time I listened to this, I didn't think much of it. The more times I listened to it, the better it sounded. I would call it somewhat subtle and it doesn't just slap you up on the side of the head. The more I listen to it, the better it sounds. It is also one of those albums that you can listen to over and over again without really getting sick of it.

5 out of 5 stars Reliving the legacy of Simply Red.......2004-12-09

Simply Red is one my favorite rock groups I grew up as a kid. I was 5 or 6 when they did songs like "If You Don't Know Me By Now" which I saw the video of. That was great. 'Cuz I like the way they mixed their styles in different kinds of music from rock, jazz, R&B, Latin, pop, disco, funk, blues, whatever you name it.

As to put it there this one of the 1st LPs I purchased from them. I love every song they did which is rockin'.

1. Come to My Aid- Excellent beat to that song w/ so much soul.

2. Sad Old Red- Reminds me of the big bands or cool nite jazz I listen to.

3. Look At You Now- Kinda of a Latin groove with more feel upbeat to sound it more rocky.

4. Heaven- Bluesy song with horns playing along in a club.

5. Jericho- Definitely my favorite 'cuz of the message like in a Cinderella story or somethin.

6. Money$ Too Tight To Mention- My mom used to love this one but is sure is killing me with this one.

7. Holding Back the Years- Yeah I know ya'll knew this one 'cuz this what made them famous.

8. Red Box- Reminded me of some James Brown playing on the record stand or something. This is more a funky r&b/soul joint.

9. New Direction- Kinda similar to track # 3 "Look at You" but with a more calm easy-listening style.

10. Picture Book- Telling me to pray 4 Jesus or ask him to seek him for advice. That's what the song is saying on the message of the song.

Sooner or later, I will buy both of their albums on CD or cassette. Simply Red, you're da greatest. Love to hear ya'll perform @ one of your concerts one day. You sound like Steely Dan to me who I'm a huge fan too.

4 out of 5 stars Simply Red.......2007-05-21

These guys have such a rich sound. I still love the idea of traditional bands. And they still have the heart of the old school band. It sounds like they've known each other for years. 'The New Flame,' has this soothing, vintage quality that's unmistakably cool.

5 out of 5 stars simply simply red's best.......2007-04-11

i listened to 'a new flame tonight,' as i finally found the copy i lost long ago. it blew my mind, just as it did the first time i ever listened to it when it first came out. i can't say enough about this cd. it is beautifully done - mick's vocals are flawless - he can make his voice do absolutely anything! it is so rich and soulful, powerful and gentle all at once. there is honestly not one bad track on this cd. i agree, SR's version of "if you don't know me by now," is incredible, but the rest of the songs deserve just as much attention and praise. really - i can't pick one song that outshines the rest, because they are all that good. it is a perfect mix of jazz, r&b, blues, rock and a bit of pop thrown in, just to keep things interesting. along with "picture book," "a new flame" has got to be simply red's best.

5 out of 5 stars If you don't know them by now,you will never, never know them!.......2006-09-06

The most memorable song from this 1989 release is the awesome soulful cover of IF YOU DON'T KNOW ME BY NOW,made famous by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes in 1972. This album, like Simply Red's 1985 debut PICTURE BOOK,was released on Elektra thus their labelmates being Motley Crue,Anita Baker and The Georgia Satellites. The other songs are good and I give the credit to frontman Mick Hucknall,a vocal clone of Jefferson Airplane/Starship's Marty Balin.

4 out of 5 stars Right Up There.......2005-12-31

Yes, I loved this one. The CD has two real killers - "Love Lays It's tune (which may be Mick's best song ever - absolute genius), and "You Got It". I rank it in a 4th place tie with "Russian Winter" as an overall ranking compared with the other Simply Red stuff. Mick has never had a bad offering and anyone should love this one. I am partial to his "newer" stuff so this is going back a ways for me.

5 out of 5 stars Mick's Finest .......2005-12-31

I have always been a big fan of Simply Red. I had to review this CD even though I bought it when it first came out. Every song is a work of art. Never Never Love was played on every jazz channel in my city and is beyond all catagorization. The thought and genius that is everywhere on this recording cannot be understood until you own it. I played this CD till it was nearly worn out. I recomend it highly.

3 out of 5 stars Hot and not........2005-11-13

Several of the numbers in this album are HOT but not enough of them to make it worth buying the album when I can get the best of them in other albums.

2 out of 5 stars 'Life" offers predictable, un-original R&B blend.......2003-06-12

By C.S.

Blue - Eyed Soul groups from the U.K. have recieved a mixed reception from North American audiences n recent years since the infusion of such acts hit such shores in the 1980's.
Arrving on the heels of their American predecesors Hall & Oates, Michael Mc Donald, and Kenny Logins, these artists, primarily influenced by contemporary Black American R&B acts, found it a tough sell to attain Stateside success. That dosen't mean that the music has been totally illegitimate by any means, just under- rated and underappreciated by an audience un-savvy to the material (like yours truly)
There have been some chart- topping moments - from Go West and their success with "King Of Wishful Thinking' from the blockbuster movie "Pretty Woman" soundtrack and moderate rotation for acts such as Living In A Box, Curiosity Killed The Cat' Rick Astley, Spandau Ballet, and Breathe.
Sheffield based ABC and former Wham! vocalist George Michael had been the most consistent with Michael, at least until his personal troubles surfaced, at the top of the list image and sales- wise.
The other British outfit that have generated on and off interest and some critical aclaim have been Simply Red. They broke chartwise in 1986 with the soulful ballad "Holding Back The Years" from their impressive "Picture Book" album.
Their next few releases sparked mild interest, but a dip in sales, particularly i the U.S.,where the market had grown weary of British acts all the way across the board, rendered the group exiled in the minds of music fans on the North American side of the Atlantic.
Then the group came back in the biggest way possible; by unleashing the best selling album in British chart history; "the multi- platinum "Stars"
Upon scrutinizing their follow up record "Life", the contrast is somewhat vast though not far removed from the soul -based foundation The Reds are known for.
"Life"is a mellow and emotive sounding piece of work with textured synths that bear a distinct resemblence to American acts stylistically packaged in a like- wise manner.
No doubt the ingredients on "Life" make it a predictabe mix, yet the interesting aspect to the songs are small live elements to the candlelight aroma that one can sniff out on the majority of the albums tracks. Case and point- the finger snaps and distant mix of horns on "So Beautiful Being", and the visual quality lent to the sexually driven subject matter on
" Remembering the First Time", a cut with the live feel that is Simply Red's forte which they continue to project on the dreamy- sounding "Out On The Range",which begins with a potent synth intro and progresses into a Philly- Motown groove vocal riff from Hucknall that certainly ranks as one the brighter spots on "Life". The album does emit a slower cadence to it and fails miserably at an attempt to master pop reggae on "Hillside Avenue" until someone walked into the studio and rattled the band's musical cage rattled to deliver the aformentioned live -sounding Simply Red tracks to give the record some sort of shape.
This album was less commericially driven and not an blatant attempt to literally duplicate "Stars",though in some respects it was. The bottom line on "Life" is that it is a less live attempt to create soul music. A counter-productive approach that prevents it from being a funkier and more powerful record and more like hip- hop based American R&B that is srtictly machine driven, lacks originality, and is way too easy to predict. Simply Red decided to be the latest in a long line of acts today that want to manufacture the magic.
All in all "Life" is not an overwhelmingly scintillating record, but it rates as a semi- strong two (2) and a half to good three (3) star album that will probably keep the die- hards satisfied, but unlikely to shift musical tides elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!.......2003-03-07

DEFINITELY one of the GREATEST bands of our time. Ever-changing line-ups (cept' for the vocalist of course) but nevetheless an astounding band. "Life" is filled with velvet sounds of Mick Hucknall, the kinda vibe you can relax to, tap your feet or simply get up and groove a little something..Simply Red just gets better with time. Their latest release "Home" scheduled for mid March is off-the-hook. The single "Sunrise" is already blazin' the airwaves around the world.. People get ready to lose yourself into the groove!

5 out of 5 stars SIMPLY A CLASSIC!.......2000-09-30

This is one of Simply Reds best studio albums to date. The album is full of pumping, upbeat, sultry and grooving R and B numbers as well as a great selection of touching ballards. Mick Hucknalls strong and uplifting vocals are complemented perfectly on tracks such as YOU MAKE ME BELIEVE, LIVES AND LOVES, the infectious classic FAIRGROUND, NEVER NEVER LOVE, OUT ON THE RANGE, WERE IN THIS TOGETHER and SO MANY PEOPLE. Simply Red never disappoint and this excellent album is another in a long line of classics. Truly magnificent! Recommended!

Almost concurrent with the attempted credibility boost of Rod Stewart's When We Were the New Boys comes Mick Hucknall's nod to roots as diverse as Neil Young and reggae crooner Gregory Isaacs, along with a fistful of originals, on the sixth Simply Red album. Blue is the lifestyle music Hucknall was born to make, but given such high-flown material, it's hardly the embarrassment it might have been. Certainly, a recasting of Young's "Mellow My Mind" as boudoir fodder is more convincing than past missteps like the group's massacre of "If You Don't Know Me By Now." He should probably leave Aretha Franklin's catalog alone, though. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars One Of The best And Most Overlooked.......2007-05-18

I have to disagree with most of the other reviewers, this is a good album. I love it as much as any of the other. This one is very blue and mellow, sad and beautiful...all the things that make me a fan of Simply Red.

3 out of 5 stars easy does it.......2006-12-16

A pair of South African friends with impeccable musical taste implored me to buy this CD, alleging that my life would be impoverished without it.

I'm not convinced.

No doubt Mick Hucknall has a certain appeal. He's got a tuneful, bluesy voice, though not one that would get him a notch on anyone's Blues Fireplace. He can be occasionally soulful. The Simply Red sound has at times been memorable.

Yet BLUE ultimately falls into the 'easy listening' rather than 'great music' category. That's not a bad thing and might well be considered a compliment when written of most performers.

With apologies to those who believe no artist should have another go at a signature performance of a given piece, Hucknall's 'The Air That I Breathe' is arguably a high point of the album, up there with the very fine 'Someday in My Life'. 'Say You Love Me' represents the CD's best writing, words and music penned by Hucknall himself.

Yet BLUE is not blues enough, and there is little here that is Simply Red as we remember that sound best.

4 out of 5 stars Still Is A Major Force.......2005-12-31

I am partial to Mick Hucknall so I have to say that I may not be as critical as I should be, but I love this CD. The summer that it came out, I played the heck out of it. If for nothing else, the Neil Young tune, Mellow My Mind, is worth the price of the CD. I dislike the hideous cover of "Air That I Breath", but some liked it. If you play this one enough you can't help but get with it.

4 out of 5 stars Mellow My Mind.......2005-07-14

I truly enjoy this CD, the first one I bought from Simply Red. When I heard 'The Air That I Breathe' on the radio I bought it on a lark. What a lucky gem I found. This CD is great to listen to on a relaxing drive... It is a short CD however, could have maybe added a few songs. But otherwise, it's some cool, mellow music to chill out too. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2005-05-15

In my opinion this is the best Simply Red album since A New Flame, which was the one that made me a confirmed Mick fan to begin with. Mostly mellow and very melodious, I can't think of a song I don't like on this one. Mick tackles a wide range of styles and succeeds in making them his own. But then again, I could listen to him singing the phone book and be mesmerized by that amazing voice, accompanied by some very fine musicians who give the songs interest and life. If you're a true Mick fan, you'll appreciate this one.
