Fantastic Forgotten Album.......2006-02-24
This CD is incredible. These guys just came and went in a flash. One day years and years ago I was at a CD shop when I decided to pick this up. I still listen to it to this day. Its a great CD and I highly suggest it if you like Alphaville, Men Without Hats, a-ha.... A few years ago I tried to track down this band. I got as far as New York but it went blank after that. The lead singer was called Sinjin and he was represented by some agency. The phone was answered by some soprano-sounding guy who stated that he knew no information on Sinjin.... Can these guys be sitting in office cubicles today?

This album is perfect. It's a must own in anyone's collection. Combine wonderful melodic guitars with a mix of synth, strings, and horns with a wonderful voice and you have Pleasure Thieves. It's a perfect mix of all the ingredients. This album does not sound like a debut album it is very well produced. The album keeps coming at you with beautiful song after beautiful song. This band should be huge but they disapeared much to my chagrin. Take a chance on the low price and I promise you will put it on the top of your favorites list.

Simple Pleasure .......2005-12-28
This album was tight. 3 of the baddest brothers at that time. I meet them once TDY to Jersey from MacDILL AFB FL. It's hard to find the cd. If you can get play it. By the way this bro can blow. CREW DAWGS for life. Peace
Underrated Super Group from NJ!.......2005-09-08
I own this groups debut effort on cassette and have been looking for the cd for years.Simple Pleasure was a group of ex-military guys from McGuire AFB,NJ..the frontman was Vann Holland, who I had the pleasure of working with in the Electric Shop at the 438th Airlift Wing in the late 80's early 90's.After seperating from the Air Force, these brothers wrote songs and appeared in Queen Latifahs "Fly Girl" video and later released the album "Simple Pleasure" and the hit single "where do we go from here". If you can get a hold of this cd grab it...hold on...and play the hell out of it! Its that good, too bad it was overlooked.
Simple Pleasure - Heaven!.......2004-11-11
Most people would never have heard of these guys as they are a soul/r&b groups from the early 90's. This would have to be my favourite cd of ALL time. It is so different to most typical soul/r&b groups. They are more low key and cruisy with funk but so damn smooth. Why? Their vocals, harmonies and just the songs are just beautiful. Buy it and have a listen for yourself...

Amazon.com's Best of 1999
The Tindersticks' formula is unique and deceptively simple: combine Stuart Staples's heart-on-sleeve, Leonard Cohen-on-Quaaludes vocals, a rainy-day orchestral lushness, a small dose of R&B swagger, and a whole heap of sexual angst. Simple Pleasures doesn't depart from that potent concoction at all, adding to the overall greatness of their oeuvre. Think of their albums as lovely seashells: they are all recognizably the same thing, but the particular shell you hold in your hand is singular and beautiful. --Tod Nelson
Amazon.com
Of all the Tindersticks' albums (and be assured that each is singularly and equally wonderful), Simple Pleasures is their most soulful and direct. On earlier outings, their songs were so packed with layered instrumentation, dark orchestration, and emotional density--on top of which Stuart Staples's brooding baritone (perhaps the most unique and lovely voice in all of music) rumbled--that you could barely breathe. But on Simple Pleasures the songs feel more open and airy, like someone has opened a door to let in the spring breeze. That's not to say that this enigmatic sextet has changed the makeup of their musical concoction much; Pleasures still features the beautiful scrim of piano, accordion, woodwinds, violin, cello, brushed drum, and the slip and slide of Staples's voice. And Staples knows that after spring comes fall, and it's the fallen that he's most interested in; his tone poems emote with both the betrayer and the betrayed. When Staples sings "You take this heart of mine," he means it in the worst possible way. And on the song "I Know That Loving," the love he knows is not a pleasant one. The beauty of the Tindersticks is that they acknowledge pain with lovely grace. --Tod Nelson

Customer Reviews:
Simply Pleasureful.......2004-05-21
On some level, I tend to agree with some of the reviewers who feel that on Simple Pleasures, Tindersticks is losing what makes the band special as it drifts off into easy-listening top 40 land. But wait! If you listen closely, you'll find the old Staples magic is still there.
It did take me a while to get into this CD because I focused initially too negatively on the superficially disco aspects of a couple of the songs. But then one day I put it on and let it play a couple of times through. That's when Simple Pleasure opened up and presented me with unexpected pleasures.
This CD is easily the most accessible of Tindersticks recordings I've heard to date. While it lacks the edge and the inscrutibility of the first two albums, the writing and arrangements invite a wider public to sample the talents of Stuart Staples and company. If I were to introduce Tindersticks to someone with fairly generic musical tastes, I would start them on Simple Pleasure.
Here, Staples' vocal talents are on full display. His delivery is soulful and sexy, and the band is tight. I like the entire CD, but the tour de force is the Hammond organ-driven ballad If She's Torn. I've played that through over and over.
While those fans who are expecting a reprise of Tindersticks first couple albums may be disappointed at first listen, those who are willing to give Simple Pleasure a chance will find that though the recording is not complex, it is simply pleasureful. The only negatives are the skimpy liner notes and the relative brevity of the CD. Buy this today and introduce your friends to the band. They should not be disappointed.
Bare bones sound.......2003-09-30
By no means as epic as the three albums that came before it, this is still a fine Tindersticks record.
Who else could pull off such a great cover of an Odyssey song?
The sound is very sparse compared to the majesty of 'Curtains' but is great as it gives you a taste of the 'live' Tindersticks experience.
A great album and much lighter in tone than the ones before it. I'd recommend this but get the second album first if you are just starting out your Tindersticks collection.
A BIG SIMPLE PLEASURE.......2000-07-14
i think it's as good as their CURTAINS & it's a lot more brighter,i can say it is the best of tinderstick's. the first two tracks of the album are just so beautiful & the typical vocal of seurat is the soul of the music.
This album should carry a health warning.......2000-06-23
For me there's no other band out there to touch the Tindersticks. Within days of buying their first album four or five years ago, all my other albums started to lose significance. I kid you not. Every album from them since has ensnared me further, and now Simple Pleasure has finally forced me to give in and accept that nearly every album I've ever bought that's not by The Tindersticks is, relatively speaking, rubbish. In some ways Simple Pleasure is perhaps not as strong as its predecessors; it's got only 9 songs on it, and a couple of those (Pretty Words and From The Inside) are decidedly average. But the other seven are so astonishingly perfect that you may well find yourself wondering, like me, why the hell anyone else even bothers. The songs tackle a huge palette of emotions and thoughts effortlessly without once forgetting to fit them to gorgeous, utterly appropiate melodies. Just remember this: once you've listened properly (for background music it is definitely not) to Simple Pleasure and the other three complete albums from the band half a dozen times each, you'll find yourself totally addicted, unable to play anything else and unable to do anything else while you're listening. Don't say you weren't warned...
So what?.......2000-05-22
Yes, probably way too light-hued for me, I wanted it to sound broader and as mesmerizingly maudlin as usual, I'm probably still wondering what the hell are those girlie back vocals doing there, or how come strings and horns and voice overlaps and even sarcasm and plain sense of humour were kind of swept up all of the sudden. I actually sleep with Tinderstick's 2nd album and "Curtains" under my pillow, and dammit, was I eager to listen to the sequel or what, but come on, like they weren't entitled to change their pace, work on forgetable, candid lyrics, take a chance on some peeled off kind of production. They've already earned the right to try whatever they feel like doing. And even playing "Jingle Bells" just by whistling the tune all drunk out of their minds, they are good as hell. It will be no dissapointment, disregard each and every one of those complaining reviews, ask yourselves if you don't feel like doing something a little different just for the heck of it sometimes, go buy it, finally you'll enjoy it.

Great listening!.......2006-05-09
This was the first Vincent Herring recording I had listened to. After listening to this there is no doubt Mr. Herring is one of the finest jazz saxophonists out there. Only in his early 40's, he should be part of the jazz scene for years to come--outstanding player.
great cd from an exciting altoist.......2002-11-30
Vincent Herring has a hard saxophone sound, the kind inspired by Coltrane. His playing is impeccable and very exciting. His solos are well-crafted and harmonically complex; a lot of notes, but all of them correctly chosen and very musical. I happen to find all these attributes very desirable in listening to any jazz musician, and this guy really delivers. The band on this cd overall is of high calibre, and I especially like the rhythm section. The first tune has some great drumming and Herring really blazes on this one. His rendition of Sophisticated Lady is really satisfying to listen to; he really sinks his teeth into those changes. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that a few of the tunes are a little bland; however, I still highly recommend this cd.

Industry Reviews
...a winning combination. SIMPLE PLEASURE is their second Musicmasters release and the best....[pianist] Walton is as versatile a writer as he is a player. But he is no less creative when it comes to rendering standards...
Stereo Review (12/01/1992)
...While he gives ample solo space to the others, it is Walton's fine thread that tie it all together....
JazzTimes (12/01/1993)
4 1/2 Stars - Very Good Plus - ...[Pianist] Cedar Walton's immersion in music is total and absolute... one of the best working groups ....the teamwork is stellar... they all swing to the highest reaches...

Customer Reviews:
soulful sorrow.......2001-03-19
The latest tindersticks album might disappoint some as it digresses from their usual sound to a more straightforward pop sound. Gone are the dark atmospherics of the previous albums that gave them an almost gothic sound. The instrumentation is also less brooding and haunting. Instead, there is heavier bass guitar sound and it grooves along with a deep organ. What better accompaniments to Staples, low richly deep voice. The songs are poppier and the influence is pure soul. They definitely know how to ride a groove here and some songs are actually upbeat albeit with a little melancholy and a hint of desparation as always. Some might object but I, however, love it as much as their old stuff. It's good to know the Tindersticks can do a great pop record.
Brilliant!.......2000-09-18
The Tindersticks are one of the greatest British pop bands around, yet they don't have a record deal anymore in the states. At an in-store performance I saw young women swooning over the boys in the band, yet you'll never see them on the T.V. Their music is haunting (though slightly pop on this one) and brilliant. But unless you slap down the cash for the import, you'll miss out. Too bad.
