Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.
Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

Moved to tears.......2004-03-18
Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.
Nonesuch delivers.Again.......2002-11-27
John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career, and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China, the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer, which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original, worth the investment, Highly highly recommended
harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12
I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.
Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22
As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.
That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.
I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.
I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.
Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02
This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!

Customer Reviews:
Distinctive and moving.......2005-03-09
The highlight of this wonderful disc is the recording of Lo, the Full, Final Sacrifice, which is heard less often than Finzi's shorter, better known songs such as My Spirit Sang All Day or Clear and Gentle Stream. But this is perhaps his masterpiece. Certainly it's among my favorite choral pieces, and on my short list for desert island music of any genre. The Finzi Singers are, as always, superb.
Exceptionally moving and spiritual compositions, performance.......2004-11-29
Why is it that some people feel that to be current in musical appreciation--knowledgeable in the work of the cutting edge--one has to give up intimacy, the soulfully lyric introspective music of the middle years of the 20th century? Why does the ugliness of "music concrete", of serialism, and minimalism hold more validity than "Intimations Of Immortality" or these choral works? I am a composer; I have-- over my 42 years of writing-- composed my share of experimental work, but after that period of being a L'enfante Terribe, I have come back to the sensuousness of clustered harmony and the ecstasy of soaring melody. These works of Finzi are filled with a real passion and love for all that is beautiful and spiritually uplifting. There is an achingly intense lovliness to such works as , "Lo, the Full and Final Sacrifice"...particularly the final Amen. The a capella works display such a great gift for counter-point, and a marvelous knowledge of 17th century prose and poetry. Finzi has wedded music and text in a very subtle way; his understanding of this melding of music and verse is greater than many of his contemporaries. If you as listeners appreciate the achingly beautiful lines of melody combined with lush harmony in a personally intimate expression-- undergirded with spiritual intensity--it is my humble belief that you will love this recording. Put aside the amateurishness of Phillip Glass, and embrace this music from a deep lyrical composer-Gerald Finzi.
Gorgeous compositions and performances.......2001-02-26
This recording will definitely boost your seratonin levels. Some of Finzi's most transcendentally beautiful -- yet also quite accessible -- pieces are presented here. Even the secular texts chosen by this composer tend to have a mystical quality about them, and this aspect is also usually evident in Finzi's harmonic approach. The Finzi Singers approach these compositions with such enthusiasm and obvious love for the music that you can't help but feel your heart swell and the occasional tear come to your eye. They sing with excellent ensemble and dynamics, and offer a vocal sound that seems well suited to the material. The recording is finely done, with a proper balance of natural reverberation. On a crisp autumn morning, there could hardly be a better disc with which to begin the day.
Loving performances of a distinctive composer.......1999-11-28
With this disc, Chandos provides a decent introduction to the lyrical and sometimes quirky choral music of Gerald Finzi. As might be expected, The Finzi Singers produce loving renditions of works great and small, in which a good balance of sacred and secular texts (some by renowned poets) is created. The unaccompanied works speak very much for themselves, and when the organ appears it is finely played. Not everyone will find the disc to their taste- for a twentieth century composer, Finzi seems more at home writing in the style of the partsongs of the previous century and this leads to some works sounding pedestrian or uninteresting. Then again, some works can take you by surprise, especially the concluding track, "Lo, the full final sacrifice", in which the intensity, languidity, joy and sadness of all the previous tracks seem to be brought together in an astounding single piece. The performances are generally faultless. I believe this disc would make a fine Christmas gift- for lovers of choral music in particular.

Not their best work, but it's OK.......2001-06-09
As an avid King's Singers fan I know what a fantastic sound this group is capable of producing, and one of the things that attracts me most is their versatility and their enormous repertoire. From madrigals to folk songs to popular tunes, there is nothing that the King's Singers cannot do - and do well at that. And even though this recording isn't their best work, I still stand by that conviction.
I have difficulty pinpointing exactly what it is about this CD that misses the mark. It just seems to be minus that "edge", that certain special "King's Singers touch" that is evident in most of their music. Part of it might be that the majority of these songs have one person doing the lead vocals and the rest of the group subordinated to the role of back-up singers. Don't get me wrong, they still do it well, but I bought the CD to hear all of them, preferably in more or less equal amounts, not five of them singing "oohs" and "aahs" and one soloist. Mind you, this demerit is (almost) forgiven by the fact that Bob Chilcott's solo voice is gorgeous, and I have no qualms whatsoever about the gentle, lilting touch he adds to Lift the Wings and In Your Eyes. In fact, I believe his voice is the most redeeming quality of this production!
I suppose I would also prefer this CD if there were more a cappella items (I think there are only 2, possibly 3), and they would do well to lose the guest lead vocalists whom they introduced for four of the songs. While it's always nice to see artists collaborating, I would take the King's Singers over the others any day!
My favourite tracks on here are most definitely the first four but, although I hate to say it, the whole calibre of the recording goes downhill from there. Vienna is just strange, and The Lord's Prayer, the final song on the CD, is so woeful I could barely stand to listen to it right through! Everything else falls into the "yeah, it's OK I guess" category - pleasant to listen to but not overly inspiring.
On balance, I'm glad I purchased it, but for those who are just beginning to love the King's Singers, a word of advice: If you want to hear this group sing contemporary music, Good Vibrations is a far superior album.
Spirit voices.......2000-04-17
I found this group because of the beautiful song "You are the new day". I'm dissappointed that the rest of the cuts I've heard - while technically sound - lack even an ounce of soul. It seems clear to me that they should stick to classical arrangements and immediately abandon covering pop tunes. That or be arrested for terminal lack of hipness.
Pop Music re-invented... in complete harmony!.......1999-02-23
This one is a real winner. I never thought The King's Singers could put pop music to a higher level. Classic songs from Crowded House, Peter Gabriel, Sade, Sting, The Beach Boys, Paul Simon and others are given wonderful new interpretations. This album has gotten me hooked, now I need to great the works from this fantastic group.

A Wee Bit O'Heaven.......2007-07-26
I have been looking for John McCormack on CD for years. I was thrilled when I found this and other CDs on Amazon. I have an LP that I bought decades ago and I have almost worn it out. The CD quality music is so much better!
Legendary selections by a legendary voice.......2004-03-24
With special emphasis on the variety presented in this collection, this album has a broadness of scope that will appeal to anyone who appreciates the magic of the human voice.
McCormack was perhaps the most popular entertainer in the world during his career, comparable with the superstars of today, only richer in the currency of his day.
Though purists may have criticized his shift to the popular venue as opportunism, and perhaps desertion of his training in the classical tradtions, he was simply presenting what people wanted to hear. Whether he set a pattern of career management followed by modern entertainers or was simply happiest when the accolades flowed over him matters not. The talent and richness are his legacy to us.
His range and vocal dexterity are well illustrated and represented by this larger than usual collection, and anyone with a particular favorite tune in his rather loose genre will likely find it here.
After a journey through this collection, listeners may well gain another special melody or two for addition to their personal list of "best ever" songs and singers.
Although it may be considered a bit foolish, some will choose this album for only one or two tracks. Some call that trait wasteful, but when a jewel of performance is played again and again, the teardrop may fall once more, and the heart will thrill yet again.
This album will please many musical palates, even those who claim no special fondness for "Irish Tenors."

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-10-29
All of John Danyel's music can be heard on this one recording, and from this music we can assume that he was a lutenist/singer. His approximate birth date was in 1564 and died somewhere around 1625. Although there exists only four solos for lute and two duets, in these six compositions Danyel displays considerable musical and technical ability. The paucity of so few pieces remaining can no doubt be blamed on the prevailing practice of improvisation: much of the surviving lute music was written down only by or for students. The twenty songs cover a great deal of style-secular,sacred,two short cycles (one a funeral elegy , and the other highly chromatic), a dialogue, dance-songs, a part song all of which make use of high quality poetry. The singers on this disc are highly skilled and experienced and sing these tunes with energy and skill. I was pleasantly surprised by Nigel Short's countertenor voice as I had not heard him prior to this disc.; and I'm wondering why I have not heard him,for his voice is very pleasing. The other singers: Libby Crabtree (soprano); Charles Daniels(tenor);Matthew Vine (tenor); Adrian Peacock (bass). David Miller (lute), Jacob Heringman(lute) and Mark Caudle (bass viol) make up the excellent instrumental ensemble. All in all, a very entertaining disc.

Customer Reviews:
Mayfield's long lost other classic Blaxploitation soundtrack.......2006-02-16
They say that Curtis Mayfield fell off after he released his 4th studio album "back to the world" in 1973. *They*, as Uma Thurman quipped in Pulp Fiction, talk a a lot, don't they ? They certainly do and in this case it seems tha the they in question talk through their backsides as this here album is a genuine lost gem for both Mayfield and Blaxploitation soundtrack devotees.
"Short eyes", his 1977 soundtrack to the flick of the same name, was released at a time when fellow heavyweights such as James Brown and Isaac Hayes had fallen victim to over-polished disco kitschness and, thus, surely must stand as one of the last great 70s soul/funk albums as it's drenched in everything that makes those first 4 Mayfield albums so damn good : that sweet falsetto almost as a ringmaster to the rest of the proceedings; commanding the dirty funked up wah-wah guitar, lush arrangements, heartstopping strings, wailing double-tracked backing vocals and trippy backwards fx to do backflips and weave their way in and out of macked-out horns and throbbing bass grooves (no homo!) while crisp snares and reverberating bongos underline the whole experience.
The bizarrely monikered "Do do wap is strong in here" is probably the most well known song here as it tends to appear on yer standard Mayfield best ofs.., funk compilations and has been heavily sampled by hip hop producers and, while it is possibly the finest composition here, the rest of the album is equally as stellar. The title track is as instantly thrilling and unforgettable a theme as any other notable Blaxpolitation title track you can name and the rest of the album is a miscegenation of fuzzed-up Chicago blues-funk and rich soulful arrangements, usually in the same song. Business as usual, then.
A must for all Mayfield fans and i'd say it's slightly better overall than "back to the world" and up there with "curtis", "superfly" and "roots". Of course there has to be a catch involved with something this good that's somehow managed to thwart reappraisal by funk-fans, the breakbeat generation and the NYC/Chicago hipsterati set until now : not domestically available here in America you can only find this on import vinyl or as part of a now deleted double-disc 90s reissue of "superfly", both of which will set you back at least $40. It's an album that's quality justifies such a hefty price tag if you've searched hell and highwater and still can't find it cheaper but, really, let's have a remastered cd reissue of this, please.
Essential 70s fonk.......2004-01-19
The last time Curtis Mayfield recorded a solo soundtrack, it had been 1972s awesome classic 'Superfly'. By 1977 when he was recruited to cut this soundtrack for a prison-based blaxploitation flick, his star status had faded somewhat and the commercial appeal of his music passed, but he was coming off a trilogy of low key but acclaimed albums and once more sounding ambitious with his work.
Again, recording a soundtrack seemed to light a creative spark in Curtis that had been too often doused over the last few years. Although not on the monumental level of creativity that was Superfly, Short Eyes is a punchy and energetic album with its share of dramatics.
The cautionary messages of 'Do Do Wap Is Strong In Here' and 'Back Against The Wall' are threatening and ride catchy riffs, 'Need Someone To Love' is an excellent and upbeat Curtis love song, and 'A Heavy Dude' is punctuated by wailing back up vocals, and like the highly theatrical title track, rides a hard edged groove. 'Break It Down' is a slow and sombre, piano-heavy number. 'Another Fool In Love' is similarly slow, a song about reluctant love, and carries a sweet harmony. The closing orchestral instrumental 'Father' is a moody and haunting cut.
Curtis sounds re-invigorated here. The songs are memorable and well structured, the whole atmosphere is dark and tripped out, using a wide variety of instruments including bongos, fonky horns, electric guitars, and at one point even a Spanish guitar! All layered upon some nice drum beats.
The sound is frequently tough and postures hard. Some seriously captivating work, I'd say the best album outside of his celebrated classics. Good stuff, Curtis.
Very Essential.......2002-07-30
