The buzz for Nelly Furtado's Loose began before the music was even recorded, with the announcement that legendary hip-hop knob-twirler Timbaland (Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake) would act as co-producer. The question on fans' minds: what would it sound like when a hip-hop kingpin collaborated with an artist who culls inspiration not just from pop music, but also her own Portuguese roots?

As it turns out, Loose incorporates a number of different styles along its journey, but is--surprisingly--primarily divided between '80s-influenced electronica and latin-infused pop. This disc is very different from Furtado's previous CDs, a fact immediately evident from track one, the new wave-affected "Afraid." A strong opener, the song is the beginning of a 1-2-3 punch of uptempo, infectious dance floor beats. The second cut, "Maneater," also proves to be incredibly catchy, but the verses and keyboard sound too much like they were plucked from electroclash artist Peaches' tree, and originality is lost. The perfect summer pop song follows, the massive hit "Promiscuous," which features clever interplay between Furtado and Timbaland on their sassy duet. From that point, Loose oscillates between the Miami-affected sounds of R&B, Latino pop, and reggaeton ("Showtime," "Te Busque," and "No Hay Igual" respectively) and the aforementioned '80s vibe ("Glow," "Do It"). Fans will hear Furtado at her vocal best on "Say It Right" and "In God's Hands"--two of the most lyrically compelling tracks on the disc. --Denise Sheppard

Album Description

In preparation for her new album, Loose, NELLY FURTADO tried out collaborations with a who's who of producers, and she tried to create a music more of the body than the mind. A prime example of the latter is first single "PROMISCUOUS," a duet with Loose producer TIMBALAND, known far and wide for his groundbreaking work with, among others, MISSY ELLIOTT, JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE and AALIYAH.

It stands to reason that gold and multiplatinum certifications (for 2003's Folklore and 2000's Whoa, Nelly!, respectively), a pair of Top 10 singles ("I'm Like a Bird" and "Turn Off the Light"), and a Grammy Award (for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance), to name just a few accomplishments, would afford a certain level of confidence. But nothing has inspired Furtado to throw caution to the wind more than motherhood. "Motherhood makes you fearless," she says. "The album is very youthful-sounding," Furtado continues, "and I think that's partly due to the presence of this two-year-old in my life. I was with her all day every day and then I'd go to the studio at night, and I think that translated into a playful energy I feel onstage but that hasn't really been heard on my records."

Starting with her longtime production team of Track & Field, she also knew she wanted to check out a variety of producers. "Working with new producers," she hazards, "is like trying on new clothes - you never know what you look good in until you try it on. And sometimes they will see something in you that neither you nor anyone else could see." So she traveled with her daughter from Toronto to London to work with NELLEE HOOPER; to Los Angeles to work with LESTER MENDEZ (who produced, "Te Busque," her moving duet with JUANES) and RICK NOWELS (co-writer and producer of the gorgeous ballad "In God's Hands"); and to Miami to work with PHARRELL WILLIAMS and SCOTT STORCH and finally, TIMBALAND.

Indeed, the raw, lighting-in-a-bottle spontaneity of the collaborative process is at the heart of Loose. "This record shows who I am in a jam-type environment, where I really feel the excitement of the creativity flowing," Furtado reveals. "It's who I am at my most artistic. I live for that, and I'm very grateful to be able to share it."

5 out of 5 stars Artistic in a marketable way.......2007-08-06

I have a feeling most of these reviewers have only heard the singles. The album is better than the singles alone. The best songs are Wait For You and Afraid. NO I did not like Promiscuous, but a true fan of Nelly Furtado will see past that and appreciate a woman being pushed by her record company to make a marketable, party album and still managing to be artistic. Also, Timba goes nuts with the rhythm and the bridge on Wait For You. Lots of good, live instrumentation and catchy beats make this album a keeper.

9/10 or 4.5/5 stars

5 out of 5 stars Awesome change of pace for Ms. Furtado.......2007-07-30

Love this album but its a shame that the best track, 'No Hay Igual"(Residente YUM!) will never make it to commerical radio in the US(Becuz its in Spanish?)

3 out of 5 stars Nelly, Nelly, Nelly..........2007-07-12

I loved "I'm Like A Bird" and "Turn Off The Light." I also liked Nelly's appearances in "Ching Ching" and "Get Ur Freak On (Remix)." I was however dissapointed with her first single by herself since her last album. Her vocals are good but this song is just okay. I think it was overplayed on the radio. I know Nelly is better than this ("Promiscuous" anyone?). She's better than Justin Timberlake but unfortuantely I was let down with this song. Not her best single. I reccomend "Promiscuous" or "I'm Like A Bird" over this anyday!

4 out of 5 stars Say it right, say it wrong... Just kidding.......2007-06-26

Nelly Furtado has had a lot of success with the release of her latest album "Loose." This single features the radio edit, a non-album track, "What I wanted," and the Peter Rauhofer Remix of "Say it right," which I believe is the only commercially released dance remix out there. Peter Rauhofer is a great DJ/Producer/Remixer and he will always be one of my favorites, however, I will have to say in all honesty that this is probably not one of his better remixes as of late. I think this is a good mix, though at times it seems a bit bland and almost boring. Almost as though something is missing. Without going on too much about the mix, if you are a big Nelly Furtado fan AND are a fan of Peter Rauhofer (and dance remixes in general) then I am sure you will enjoy this single and feel it is worth-while.

5 out of 5 stars Set Yourself Free & Love It!.......2007-03-31

This is part 2 of a set titled SAY IT RIGHT. The CD has a blue and white style vs. the part 1 that has a yellow and white style on disc and cover. Also in a slim-line jewel case with the title track, non-album track, and an added dance remix plus video. If you enjoyed the first 2-track CD then this is a must. Dance lovers will definitely find this to be a totally spectacular production.

SAY IT RIGHT [Radio Edit] has the catchy dance beats, nice vocals, excellent drums, and chorus. The lyrics are fun to sing along and strong in meaning. Apparently, it's about not giving a lover power to control, destroy, or make you loose sleep. The melody has great rhythm, chorus, dance styles, and energetic beats. "You don't mean nothing at all to me" is repeated showing a strong message that life doesn't end with someone who isn't right.

WHAT I WANTED brings Nelly to a slower tempo displaying depth of emotion. It's a slow ballad with true sincerity and humility. It's about going for something you wanted but never got. The outcome doesn't matter because the reality is you gave it your all. As she sings about her dream and what she wanted it's apparent love can be hard to let go yet comforting to do so. The melody is soothing, pleasant in sound, and refreshing for the soul.

SAY IT RIGHT [Peter Rauhofer Remix Part 1] is a hot club remix sure to get you dancing off your feet. The song takes a dive to faster paced trance like effects, different introduction, pumping jamming dance styles with techno flairs, up and down tempos as well as plenty of percussion and synthesizers. Straying from the original song the vocals are still vastly heard yet filled with echoes, swirls of sounds, and much club ambiance. It's dreamy, fantasy filled, and definitely highly paced for the dance floor. If anything is certain it is this: The Remix in this CD is much better than many of her past singles. There is true DJ styles incorporation more instrumentations, effects, and vast production much more geared to club hoppers and dance fans. Quite sticky, infectious, and groove like this remix will get you dancing up a storm feeling like wanting to shake your body non-stop. Club lovers don't pass this out. Nelly's vocals are echoed often and electronic-a effects are vastly hard.

SAY IT RIGHT VIDEO [Enhanced CD] is the video many have already seen as Timbaland and Nelly dance face to face and get very close as the message behind the music is reinforced. This is an excellent video with much dance styles, highly energetic beats, and flairs for control and getting the message across.

Overall, from all of Nelly's singles I find this to be on the top of my favorite. The combination of 2 highly emotional yet different songs plus a dance track and video makes this remarkable. Definitely buy this if you are a Nelly fan, club hopper, or a lover of music to enjoy for the depth of emotion, different styles displayed, and the themes. It's definitely a top sensation. Before it sells out be sure to buy it. The part 1 is also an excellent addition for those days you don't want to listen to the remix. This is highly recommended for sure!

Blame it on the bossa nova, but this chick has got soul. By filtering her Portuguese roots through the trip-hop she was weaned on, Nelly Furtado creates a hypnotic form of R&B/alternapop that at times sounds like Fiona Apple, Macy Gray, and Gwen Stefani all rolled into a Portishead song. Cutting her teeth at four Lilith Fair dates before even having a record contract, Furtado seems accelerated far beyond her 21 years. Listen, and you can hear the Portuguese fado tradition, Brazilian beats, flashy urban rhymes--enough snap, crackle, and pop to fill your breakfast bowl. Put your ear closer to the speaker, though, and you can sense that this is the sound of a multicultural young woman finding her own identity through all the pop she's been fed. If you're someone who likes to sing along to soaring vocals or who likes to get hip to a new star before she goes supernova, this is an album to own. --Heidi Sherman

5 out of 5 stars LOVE every song!.......2007-08-05

Every song is just fantastic! I'm playing the CD a LOT! My first real knowledge of Nelly Furtado. After buying this CD, I bought the other 2: Loose and Folklore; I hope I get to like them as much. But Whoa, Nelly! was NO struggle to get to love. A good workout CD as well. A lot of variety in the songs tempo and arrangement, but it all holds together

5 out of 5 stars Lucky to have her..........2007-01-12

I definitely think we're lucky to have Nelly in the music industry, as this album clearly proves. There are really no bad songs on this album. Her voice is different and amazing, and there are moments on this CD that just take your breath away.

Standout tracks: Hey Man, On the Radio, Like a Bird, Turn Off the Light, Party

4 out of 5 stars A Spunky & Eccentric Debut........2007-01-03

I fully admit that I have not listened to new types of music in a long while. I'm a fan of 1960's & 70's British Rock & Motown. I did not care much for the music of the 1990's. In "Whoa Nelly," she bares all in her songs. swirling melodies, & open emotions, give her tunes a blend of bossa nova & folk pop. Her restless vocals kept you listening, even though the repititions grew tiresome. She reminds me a little of the alternative music from the 1970's with a 1990's twist. I liked "I'm Like A Bird & Turn Off The Light" the most. She certainly sounds like an artist that has some staying power.

1 out of 5 stars get your own sound, nelly!!!!!.......2006-12-18

Anyone that knows anything about the canadian music scene will tell miss nelly is a phoney. There is another canadian singer out there called "Esthero", and she is the real deal. Nelly copied her unique sound and made a mediocre album for the masses. And to make things worse, nelly has strayed away from this sound altogether and has made a top 40 hip hop album-yuck!!! At least esthero has stayed true to herself and is making music that just doesnt appeal to 'the norm'. But dont fret, esthero has gotten back at nelly. She released the single, "o.g. bitch". Check it out, it is sooooo good.

4 out of 5 stars classic nelly furtado is far better than the new junk.......2006-11-03

nelly furtado's new song is catchy, but it doesn't come near the higher quality of this album. this is when she was still a little folky, but there are beginnings of pop/hip-hop influences in her work. it's a great album!

With the No Limit and Cash Money crews having permanently seared the once-ignored Deep South into the hip-hop map, Nelly arrives to make a mark for the heretofore uncelebrated St. Louis scene. After outlining the rules of the game from lifestyle (gats, grass, and sex) to wardrobe (he cuffs his jeans like Beaver Cleaver), the rapper offers scenario after scenario depicting the gangsta world as one big party; he and his crew seem much more interested in fellatio than shootouts. The title single, which preceded this CD's release by months, is the clear standout with its low-rider groove, but the midtempo R&B-flavored flows of "Utha Side," "Greed, Hate & Envy," and "Steal Da Show" are also seductive. --Rickey Wright

2 out of 5 stars To think he has gone even further downhill from here..........2007-06-25

I'll admit it. I remember the summer of 2000. Everyone was playing the song 'Country Grammar' by Nelly and it was a great track. After hearing that and his next single, 'E.I.', which was also pretty good, I bought this album and, well, was very disappointed.

Although it's not terrible in the sense of how his albums are today (well, any album released by Nelly after this debut), this is still a lackluster album with a limited number of good tracks. The vast majority of great or decent songs were singles (Country Grammar, E.I., and Batter Up). Other than that, 'Luven Me' (where he talks about his early life as a teenager) and 'St. Louie' are pretty good, but the rest of the album is boring garbage. Even the good songs lack the spark that made them so great years ago. Chalk 'Country Grammar' up as a forgettable debut by an artist who has gone even further downhill from here.

1 out of 5 stars No more, please.......2006-08-03

Remember the days when we were punks and we'd gather 'round the phonograph and listen to some Puccini on the old Edison cylinders? They held up to 4 minutes of music! Count 'em, 4 minutes! Then that hippie opera singer Enrico Caruso came along and all the young punks would listen to him, including myself. He was quite the singer. When I was a young kid though, the only form of music we had were the concerts. I remember hearin' some good old Franz Liszt bein' played on the pianer and dancin' to the Strauss waltzes. Those were the days.

Then they came out with those things called gramophones, which were even more modern, if it was even possible. But it was, because then they came out with a new modified version of the phonograph that all the young punks would listen to, lazy kids. I mean, you didn't even have to crank a handle like you had to with gramophones. And what's this, 1 hour, a full 60 minutes of music, on 1 record? Pshaw! 4 minutes of music was all I needed, and I was still pooped out even after that! In my day, it was bed at 4 p.m., breakfast at 2 a.m., then off to the mines. We didn't have 60 minutes of free time.

I have no idea what form of music they have now. Apparently, they came out with a couple other things after the phonograph. Now all I see these days are kids with their fancy eye-pods (?) and MP3, MP4 players, whatever they're called, listening to that "hip-hop" tomfoolery of theirs. You can't even call it music, it's just noise. Well, gotta get ready for bed now, it's almost 3:45.

1 out of 5 stars I'm sorry but this album sux.......2006-07-23

I listened to this album and I actually felt cancer forming in my ear drums. Nelly is wack as hell period. He is the modern day version of MC HAMMER. Take a look at the music he is making now. This album is commercial as hell but when you slide down Nelly's resume it gets even more commercial. I mean how low can you go? Country grammar has some decent beats that get professionally wasted but the number one beat waster in the world. Nelly is the WORST rapper actor to ever walk this earth. What we need to do to people like this is to yank him off stage and tar and feather this klown. Check out real hip hop like Mos Def and Immortal technique.

I am sorry for those of you who are hatin on nelly but he cant be touched. I would go as far to say this cd is classic. I mean it has everything from the straight hardcore isht, to a couple slow songs, to trunk bangaz and songs strictly for the club. This cd is awesome but i mean every nelly cd has been awesome as well as the tics so to all you haters...."dont make me pull the 44 out....EIEI.

On her second album, Nelly Furtado takes a hard left turn. The colorful but incomplete fusion of her debut, Whoa, Nelly!, gives way on the tellingly titled Folklore to an approach that lets in some acoustic sounds that take the music in an entirely different, richer direction. At times sounding like a dead ringer for singer-writer Sam Phillips (whose work colors each episode of the TV series "Gilmore Girls"), Furtado aims for more rock-oriented ground without losing the Brazilian influences that are so much a part of her identity. Her voice and tunes are strong, and both words and music paint a young woman still very much in movement, change, flux. It's an intriguing sound, and one that thoughtful listeners will cherish. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars Great!.......2006-11-05

This is s very good CD, Nelly is a strong singer with a beautiful, powerful voice that plays out really well in this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Innovative and eclectic.......2006-10-27

Despite the lack of public acceptance of Folklore, Nelly Furtado's second album released three years ago, that doesn't discount it from having its moments. The use of multi-cultural instruments here is insane--and Furtado sounds her nasally best throughout every track. The stellar "One-Trick Pony" has a great message about not following the crowd and breezes into the introspective "Powerless." Sure, despite these two amazing songs there isn't much left on Folklore that makes for single material...but don't let that fact detract from the disc. So despite its flaws the musical introspection and innovative use of instruments make Furtado's second effort far superior to any other eclectic album in its category.

5 out of 5 stars Nelly's best album.......2006-09-16

This is definitely Nelly Furtado's most mature, most musically even, and best album. Whoa, Nelly! got me hooked, and with Folklore she did not disappoint. Whoa, Nelly! and Folklore were like nothing I had ever heard before musically, and each album does a great job of painting pictures of how life is. Nelly's genius and willingness to blend music from different cultures and genres is shown through these two albums for sure, but Folklore especially. You wouldn't expect it to work the way it does, but the results are fantastic. This is an album not to be missed!

5 out of 5 stars "Folklore" Really Is A Great Album!.......2006-09-01

All of Nelly Furtado's albums had certain strengths to them. Her debut album "Whoa, Nelly!" was loaded with fresh ideas & spiritual exploration. Her third album "Loose" had its youthful, exuberant energy. The strength in her second album, "Folklore", lies in its uncompromising artistry and autobiographical feel.

Obviously, highlights are abundant on this album, most notably "Try", a beautiful guitar ballad about doing the best she can with herself and her life while everyone around her judges with cold, prying eyes. Lyrical prominence is not only found on the aforementioned cut, but also the uplifting folk-pop of lead single "Powerless" -an ode to being yourself & not worrying about everyone else's perceptions of you-, the anthemic, life-inspiring "Forca" & the emotionally engaging "Explode", a powerful guitar ballad about a female teenager's painful hardships with guitar riffs much more louder & powerful to suit the song's passionately dramatic mood. "Picture Perfect", my personal favourite, is also a highlight, despite the fact that around 25-50% of the song's profound lyrics lack universal appeal. The light guitars & fluttery pianos perfectly suit the aforementioned song's vibe, and Nelly Furtado seriously adds some enormous passion in the somewhat-repetitive chorus.

No matter how you look at any of these tracks, "Folklore" is another Pop classic from Nelly Furtado. While this album may lack some universal appeal compared to her other 2 albums, it's no wonder people consider this album her best work. Please buy it, as well as any other albums Nelly Furtado wishes to grace us with in the future. 5 STARS!

I am really surprised when people say that this CD had a low sales record. I absolutely love it. I dont have her first cd but between Folklore and Loose (also good) I prefer Folklore.

When your debut album scans 8x platinum, why mess with the formula? That's what Nelly must have been thinking on Nellyville, as he virtually carbon-copies the Country Grammar template on his follow-up. This time around, though, unusually large chunks of his rhyme schemes are fixated on tales of his rise from rags-to-bitches. On tracks like "Work It" (which sadly features Justin Timberlake of toy band 'N Sync) and the title track, hip-hop's materialistic excess hits a fever pitch. Still, "bling, bling" never sounded so good over St. Lunatics in-house producer Jay E's beats.

Nelly takes his down-home St. Louis rap cadence to, er, identical heights on "Country Grammar II," one of the many similar-sounding sequels to original chart blazers "Country Grammar" and "E.I." The anthemic "Hot in Herre," whose hook implores hotties to get undressed over a poppy Neptunes beat, is the 2002 version of "Ride wit Me." Nelly even pulls a Q-Tip routine, mutating his already singsong delivery into full-on balladeering on "The Gank" and "Pimp Juice," with mixed results. KRS-One has called for a boycott of this album because he's decided Nelly has no respect for hip-hop elders, and, well, maybe he's right. But that won't stop this St. Lunatic from taking his fresh approach to commercial hip-hop to the nearest Chase Manhattan. --Dalton Higgins

First let me talk about Nelly's"Nellyville" Uhm its...Trash!!!!! Lmao! Its not even worth talking about at all. Now lets talk about Nelly going against Krs one ? He actullie thought about having a battle against krs one and to me thats f*ckin funny. Its like vannila ice tryin to go against nas on a battle. What a f*ckin joke!

1 out of 5 stars nelly sucks .......2007-02-14

NELLY THINKS HE CAN RAP BUT HE SUCKS HE JUST NEEDS TO STICK TO SOMETHIN LIKE PICKING UP TRASH ON THE SIDE OF A ROAD.

1 out of 5 stars This is just a pathetic follow up........2006-08-11

Am I The only ones who actually liked nelly's first album, I Thought it had charm, style, grandier to me and kind of scale and kind of importance, you thought it mean something, but this is just a lame gimmick from the start, I Mean there are some moments and some good songs (including the sexy and very funny music video hot in herre with cedric the entertainer), but the rest are just horrible, there is nothing else about this album that I Can engage with nor cared about and who cares?

Country Grammer was funny and good, this one's an utter disaster.

One of the worst albums of the decade.

1 out of 5 stars Another round of this..........2006-01-22

Nelly's sophomore album was just as bad as his first one. The song Hot In Herre was a decent lead off single, so I thought that he might have came to his senses a little bit. Boy was I wrong. More singing and this time with Kelly Rowland from Destiny's Child on the song Delimma and a song with Justin Timberlake. Now he makes a somewhat attempt to impress me by taking Beanie Siegel's Roc Tha Mic (Remix) and puts it on his CD, not to mention taking a shot a hip hop legend KRS-One. Another track worth listening to is #1 and possibly the only song that he has made by himself worth listening to. Everything else, just a big no no. Once again he has appealed himself to the people who hardly listening to rap, because I even hear that song with Kelly Rowland on oldies radio stations. This right here has got to stop, because I had enough of it.

1 out of 5 stars Bubble gum rap.......2006-01-14

Nelly could make the wort rapper sound like a lyricyst, and how dare him to diss KRS-one, he just said the truth and he really did not diss him on Number 1, he just added to why he sucks. Lets face it, all his songs are basically dumb and and really don,t have much texture involved. And how funny is it that his friends really have no skill and they are all over this album it is just laughable. If you buy this album, you throw away good money. Unless you like bubblegum rap. This is more for a teen white girl who wants to be cool, but lets face it ,its played out.

5 out of 5 stars It's Dreamy.......2007-01-10

This is a very wonderful recording of Stephen Foster by a master singer.
Foster's songs are of a more innocent and naive time in the American psyche, a time that it would not hurt us to remember, given the wretched brutality of American culture today (something you'll appreciate after listening to this recording).

The songs are beautifully sung by Mr. Hamspon, and the musical accompaniment with piano, mandolin, tuba, banjo, etc. seems a perfect setting for this period music. I enjoyed the musical interludes of Foster songs (not sung by Mr. Hampson), such as "Oh, Suzanna", "My Old Kentucky Home", and "Camptown Races." They are foot-stompin' and finger-snappin' good in a non-syncopated way.

Mr. Hampson's voice is so beautiful, and he has done such a wonderful job with these song's you'll just have to hear it, and when you do, tell me that you're not dreaming.

I remember reading a quote by John Phillip Sousa that decried the use of syncopation in American popular music. I never understood it until listening to this recording. The richness and intensity of American popular music (as experienced in the work of Stephen Foster) has been lost.
Everything has to be so cool today, thanks to syncopation, and "cool" really means no emotion.

If emotion is what you want, emotion is what you'll get with Stephen Foster's songs. It was a time when the death of loved ones (especially those who died in their youth) was experienced more often (see "I Dream of Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair" and "Gentle Annie"). And we were not protected from the vicissitudes of fate by myriad government programs, modern medicine and universal prosperity (see "Hard Times").
Husbands and wives had their differences then, as today, (see the amusing song "My Wife is a Most Knowin' Woman") The passion of the Civil War (Foster was a Unionist),is reflected in a wonderful, fun song, "That's What's the Matter."

If you love good music, and you have heart which can be stirred, and you love your country, this is for you.

I love this recording. It has opened up the door to my "beautiful dreams," dreams of bygone days, lost love, and whatever else we pine for.

I wanted to buy several copies for my friends, but somehow I felt that the impact of this recording was so personal, that it could not be shared with others. Not that they couldn't enjoy it, but that I could not begin to share the intense emotion and reverie stirred in my heart by these beautiful songs.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Composer of all time.......2006-08-20

Growing up playing his stuff on piano, I love the instrumentality of this CD..the violins give off that wail that he speaks of..I am not sure what it is about Stephen Foster but these verses..grab me like no other..there is so much sensitivity to it..

I dream of Jeannie with the light brown hair
Born like a vapor on the summer air
I see her tripping where the bright streams play
Happy as the daisies that dance on her way
Many were the wild notes her merry voice would pour

but the violins in this CD make this CD the best out there..
FYI should you be into astrology Stephen Foster is definition of Cancer...Sun and Moon conjunct in Cancer with mars in Scorpio..i love his lyrics..almost to the point of obsession..

5 out of 5 stars An American classic from Hampson that brings smiles and tears.......2006-07-17

Stephen Foster was the greatest American composer of sentimental parlor ballads--he so perfectly imitated folk songs that his music wound up turning into them. In an age of home music-making and later of families sitting around the radio, Foster's songs were a staple, often performed by crossover artists from opera like Lawrence Tibbett. Those were plump, ripe styles of singing, highly flavored by church hymns.

In this 1992 collection of 17 Foster favorites, plus a few rareties, Hampson drops the platform manner and goes straight for heartfelt sincerity. His tone is plain yet sweet, his expression intimate. He is accompanied by instruments redolent of the Victorian drawing room (guitar, fiddle, upright piano), and the mood they create brings tears and smiles of remembrance. This music is embedded in America's genes, and it's wonderful to realize that every note is still alive and throbbing with feeling.

5 out of 5 stars OMG!!! More than 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 stars, one of the best album in the world!!!.......2005-11-25

Simply one word, WOW!!!
Thomas Hampson's voice is simply fantasic. His voice is very different from regular operatic baritone voice, very sweet, and rich. I really cant believe an operatic baritone can sing folk song like THIS good, in my opinion he sounds even better than his opera works in this album. His voice and the background music matches perfectly, the outcome would move u to tears, and u can feel the origin of MUSIC. This album really shows what the word MUSIC means, and the songs simply just ALL beautiful. I like his "beautiful dreamer", "my life is well knowing woman", and "jeanie with the light brown hair" the most. When I listen the songs I would just imagine that I am in the world of past USA, and I can feel the life of the ppl in the past USA~ just like watching an old classic movie, it would touch ur heart and fall in love with this album.

5 out of 5 stars It's simply lovely.......2004-12-14

I didn't know Stephen Foster (I thought): wrong: Oh Susanna, etc, I knew, but had no idea who the composer was.

This CD is a revelation. The melodies are so beautiful, as are the poems, and Thomas Hampson just brings them to life as wonderfully as ever. I especially love "Beautiful Dreamer" - it gives me butterflies - and "My wife is a most knowing woman" - the way he makes the voices and the indignation is just brilliant. If one needed reminding what a brilliant singer Mr Hampson is - this disk does it.

3 out of 5 stars Live Bonus Disc Creates Hype! Does It Live Up To It?.......2007-04-08

This 2 disc Tour Edition comes in a cardboard cover with the same artwork as the regular album version. The songs in the first disc have an added track titled "Somebody To Love" (International Bonus Track) while the bonus disc has an array of non-album tracks and live versions very enjoyable and worthwhile. Since many who are viewing this page are interested in the bonus disc I will gear my review on that. All in all, the album accompanied by the mellow sounding bonus disc is refreshing. Not quite dance oriented yet pleasant to just sit back and take pleasure in.

Let My Hair Down is a mellow pop sounding song with Nelly singing in a very deep pitch along some bass, chorus, and vast instrumentation. The song repeatedly mentions, "I'm going to let my hair down.... Tell me something that will make me want to jump around." Overall, this is a song with sensual over tones vs. dance or highly energetic beats like her other hits.

Undercover is a non-album track that has a similar tempo as the previous song yet a few notches faster. The beats carry a very agreeable style with much mystery in lyrical quality, as the object of affection is somewhat unattainable.

Runaway has a mellow type sound with the melody taking slower guitar chords, and fewer pounds and little if any bass. This does not sound like any of her popular hits or non-album tracks. "In God's Hands" has some similarity in the depth with much meaning yet not uplifting to dance to or feel revitalized. Some lyrics, "You're an angel that sings to me." Her voice has a deep sound like her first album at some points.

Te Busque (Spanish Version) featuring Juanes is quite pleasing to hear for die-hard fans. This is nearly the same song found on the album so I don't see why it was added. Not a huge fan of Juanes I find myself skipping this track.

No Hay Igual featuring Calle 13 has phenomenal rhythm and fast paced beats that if would have been toned down a few notches could have been a much better track. The lyrics are not your typical moral standards as they reflect much loose talk and some profanity.

All Good Things (Come To An And) featuring Rea Garvey from Raemonn sounds very good like her single and album version. The difference is not considerably notable enough. Overall, I found it mellow, pleasant in sound, and very good.

Crazy (Live From Radio 1 Lounge Session) is the cover song of Gnarls Barkley. This is heard on some of her singles. Her vocals are very nice along the guitar and other background singer. The live sound makes her singing and instruments sound much distinct bringing the message behind the song much stronger and much more expressive. This was excellent and highly recommendable for those who have not bought the singles.

Maneater (Live from Sprint Music Series) is unlike any version of Maneater I've ever heard. The melody is unquestionably heard nicely along Nelly's singing. Although, she sounds a bit out of breath occasionally her overall performance is extraordinary to say the least. She is never off key. This is one of my favorite Nelly songs so I can say it was a good track vastly different from the original, album, and singles. It has a more "out there" raw type sounds!

Promiscuous (Live @ The Orange Lounge) featuring Saukrates is slightly different in sound from the ones on the singles and album. The male accompaniments in the background make this sticky, infectious, and even sensual. Although, Timbaland is not heard like the other version Saukrates does a great job in giving it his own unique spin.

Overall, Nelly die-hard fans will find this to their satisfaction. Casual listeners may want to check out the regular album version first or hear some samples. To many, a dance mix bonus CD would have been much more appealing but the live versions were definitely worthwhile and pleasurable.

5 out of 5 stars Best Album Of 2006.......2007-03-31

Wow, how ironoic. Like the other reviewer, i also bought my album at Zellers. I had no idea that it was selling for over $30 on here. I don't plan on opening the album yet. Thanks for letting me know what it looks like! Nelly will be in Toronto for her concert on April 4th, and i'm gonna try and get it autographed. I'll open it up when i get there. Just a quick note, all of the "bonus" tracks have been leaked onto the internet for a long time. Probably since her album first leaked. I heard all of these songs and loved them, but i still decided to buy the album. Honestly, this is the best album of 2006. The lyrics in the songs, the production, and even the way she controls her voice. Nelly has significantly grown as an artist. She teamed up with THE best hip hop producer, Timbaland, and together they made some of the best "alternative" music. Seriously, i don't know exactly which genre to put the album in. Some songs are hip hop, others folk, some pop, and there's even some spanish. You can put the album on and play it track by track. If you are tempted to skip a song, wait, stop, give it a chance, listen to the whole song. When i first heard some of the songs on the album, i hated them right from the start. Then one day i decided to just listen to them all, and guess what, i like 'em all. Say it right is my favourite song on the album, as is All Good Things, and Showtime. Those songs are all very different. I hope (I really, really, really, really, really hope) that Nelly releases Showtime as a single. I really want to see a video for that. I don't know when it happened, but sometime after her last album, Nelly developed an incredible fashion sense. Along with that, she has hired AMAZING directors who capture the essence of each of her songs. The video for All Good Things Come To An End completely fits with the songs. Yes, i know the video makes no sense, but neither does the song! Come on now, dogs whisteling?! lol. But the video was beautifully shot and created a serene vibe. As with the video for Say it Right. It was a very simple video. It had a simple concept. Few sets. Like 3 extras. A bunch of closeup shots. Light synchronized with the lyrics. The video was still very beautiful. I recommend everyone buy this album. The price of $30 is a little steep, but if you can find it cheaper, definetly grab it. It was a fluke i saw it. I was buying dog food and walked buy the cd racks. I had no idea the album came out yet. The second i saw it, i knew i had to support this great artist.

First off im not a kid, I just dont have an account.
Second off I did not pay 33.99 for this cd, I got it for 13.99 at zellers.
Yes, the special edition at zellers for 13.99.
And the cd is not in a blue case, the cd is in a slip in case, which is the blue one. But when you slip the cd out of the cover its the normal red one.
Ok well heres my review.

I was never to fond of Nelly until I heard Maneater. Even though I own both of her past disks. I never really liked her first cd 2 much, and I really disliked the 2nd. But then something happend to our Nelly. She came back with this never before heard sound. I bought Loose the same day I heard Maneater. I loved the cd alot.
Anyways I was walking through the cd section at Zellers when I saw this disk. I looked at the price. 13.99. I really didn't even think about it for a second. I tokk 1 look at the back, and next thing I knew I was at the checkout. This re-made version of Loose contains 4 new songs.
-Let my hair donw
-Somebody to love
-Undercover
-Runaway

And 2 remixes
-All good things
-No Hay Igual

And 3 live songs.
-Crazy (a slower version, but does it better then Knarles Barkley)
-Maneater
-Promiscuous

Overall Im very glad to have bought this disk. I wouldn't pay 33 bucks for it, but if you ever come across it in a store for cheaper. Pick it up. Cause its Limited Edition.

Anyways, I love the disk, Love the bonus songs and remixes.
Live songs are great. So my review is 4.5/5.
And it deserves it!

5 out of 5 stars Let It Go & Shake It Some More!.......2007-05-17

While Nelly's other singles of "Say It Right" have the similar artwork on cover and disc, this one has a totally different style on both. The disc has a nice peach tone that goes nicely with the front cover. But the outer is not the "true" of the production. The art of this single is the inner contents and track selection combo.

Say It Right Radio Edit is also on some of her other singles however on this CD you experience a different mood since the track Maneater follows it. This song is the sensational hit that brings catchy beats, pleasant style sounds, and infectious hooks. Apparently, it's about not giving a lover power to control, destroy, or make you loose sleep. "You don't mean nothing at all to me" is repeated showing a strong message that life doesn't end with someone who isn't right. While many songs get tiring to hear this one manages to stay vibrant.

Maneater Radio 1 Live Lounge Session is chosen to compliment the first track. While the words to the first song display "You don't mean anything at all to me", this second song jabs the punch straight on the jugular as it ends by saying, "...wish you never ever met her at all..." The Live sound spotlights her vocals a lot more by distinctively marking her words with much more distinct clarity, vibrancy, and rawness.

While there is no dance mix or remix don't be discouraged. The other versions are for those days when your club moods are high. This single is for the days when you just want to lay low and empathize with the words behind the music.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2007-01-21

I've had this CD for about 6 years now and it never gets old. As the title suggests, it's great for relaxing with a good book and a glass of wine. I find myself reaching for this CD whenever I get a migraine. I had always heard that the complexities of Beethoven's music could ease a migraine, or I suppose any headache. I've never been able to find any substantiated proof of this but from my experience the music eases my headaches. Whether it's psychological is still a mystery to me. Fact is, I love this CD and it's never far from me.

4 out of 5 stars Famous Beethoven slow movements.......2006-01-15

The real Beethoven would probably be irritated with compilation CD's like this that "cherry picks" a variety of slow movements from various works he composed. But, the average listener today will see it as a great way to get to know his music and enjoy an hour of more serene music - less Beethoven's more intense movements. The variery here is broad: solo piano, violin + piano, string quartet and full orchestra symphonies and concertos. The dreamy solo-piano pieces are some of Beethoven's most beloved and alluring slow movements that vaulted him to fame. While these and the chamber music tend to be more "relaxing," the latter orchestral pieces especially contain shifts in tempo, dynamic range and emotion that some might not find so relaxing. After all, this is Beethoven with a full orchestra and not Bach or the Baroque.

But, all is not lost if you are looking for a collection of serene, lyrical music composed by the great Beethoven. There actually is a CD that features some of Beethoven's most endearing and melodic adagios and largos: "Beethoven for Book Lovers" (Philips label). This CD is mostly comprised of the nicest slow movements from Beethoven's ten violin sonatas (violin + piano) played by the legendary David Oistrakh - a violinist with one of the most gentle and beautiful tone ever recorded. Fortunately for those wanting uninterupted peacefulness, there are only a couple of those typical "Beethoven outbursts" in this CD (very brief though). But, overall, the flow and tone of the entire CD is truly relaxing, enchanting and not distracting. All of these works reveal the gentle side of Beethoven and his surprizing ability (for such a fiery composer) to write music of such poinant and tenderhearted emotional appeal. Also, the "Chopin for Relaxation" is one of the better ones in this series and features some of Chopin's slower, more serene solo-piano music and the ever-so lovely middle movements from his two legendary piano concertos.

5 out of 5 stars Number of discs.......2005-03-16

The ad above shows 2 discs with the same track names... this item has only 1 disc with 11 tracks (names as shown above).

3 out of 5 stars I Know Music, and This is Not the Best (by Beethoven Lover).......2005-02-21

Ok, I'll admit, this is a pretty good album, but it lacks the feeling of Beethoven. Its songs don't sound like Beethoven is playing, and its not too relaxing. It deserves three stars because of this lack of the great Beethoven himself. Sure, the songs are pretty, but I'd buy a different album if I was you.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Best By beethoven Lover.......2005-02-20

not completely a delight...shows little Beethoven in it all, deserves only about two or three stars.
