Hinterland

One thing's for sure: Hinterland is unlike any hip-hop album you've heard before. Aim man Andy Turner recorded this follow-up to his excellent debut album, Cold Water Music, in a private studio on the sleepy Barrow-In-Furness seafront, a hundred miles from the bustling hip-hop underground of Manchester, where he made his name. Rolling elements of vintage soul and Burt Bacharach-style songwriting into its grand design, Hinterland pulls out wild cards aplenty. "The Girl Who Fell Through the Ice" finds Turner looping a flourish of violins over frosty synths, as longtime Aim collaborator Kate Rogers wraps her tonsils around a chilled tale of doomed love. The upbeat "No Restriction" revives A Tribe Called Quest's flower-power past, with guesting rap crew Souls of Mischief offering clever, mischievous rhymes. Meanwhile, "Good Disease" strays right off the hip-hop map: a slick four minutes of R&B-tinted lounge music, it features an unexpected highlight in the form of a falsetto-high cameo from ex-Baby Bird man Stephen Jones. It's not for those that like their hip-hop raw, but Hinterland adds a very welcome bit of subversion to the traditional rap terrain. --Louis Pattison
Product Description
2002 release that beautifully reflects Grand Central's commitment to funky, un-abrasive Hip Hop. Like a soundtrack Hinterland unfolds, changes its pace, and evokes a specific locality for its audience. Dark beats, hypnotic strings, soundtrack samples, and deep bass merge into a cohesive producers statement. On 'The Girl That Fell Through The Ice' Kate Rogers sings enigmatically over orchestrated strings. Diamond D displays his storytelling skills as he narrates Aim's haunting production on the 'Omen'. While Oakland's Souls Of Mischief turn in a classic appearance on 'No Restrictions' flipping tempos and rhyming with superb skill and fluidity. Hinterland is a progressive and contemplative album, tinged with remarkable soulful grooves, trip hop ballads, and emotive melodies.

I'm a sucker for a bit o' Mellotron.......2007-06-20
About a minute and a half into the title track you're going to think you're listening to a long lost Yes album. Wobbler sounds like they're from 1972, which can be credited to a reliance on analog keyboards and a blend of acoustic and electric instuments. But while they clearly emulate classic prog, they are not simply chasing the ghost of 'Close to the Edge'. Their sound is old; their music is not. They're a solid, talented band that have succeeded in creating something fairly fresh and enjoyable. And while there's nothing here to completely blow your mind, there is something thoroughly heartwarming and deeply satisfying about this album.
Best thing to happen to prog since Änglagård!.......2006-11-19
And that's no overexaggeration either! After Änglagård broke up following the release of Epilog and their performance at Progfest '94, there was this hole left off by them. So people were looking to Sinkadus, another Swedish band, but they too only managed two albums, Aurum Nostram (1997) and Cirkus (1999) before seeming to go quiet. Unfortunately, for many people, Sinkadus failed to live up to expectations, although in defense, it might be a bit too much to ask of another band to reach the heights of the mighty Änglagård. My only real complaint about Sinkadus is they lack edge.
Then comes Änglagård's reunion (this time without Tord Lindman) in 2002, and their appearance at Nearfest 2003. People was starting to have hope, but then things all went silent again for this group.
Now comes Wobbler, who hails from Hønefoss, Norway, who formed in 1999. Their keyboardist, Lars Fredrik Frøislie had played on White Willow's most recent release. Wobbler first posted some demo MP3s on their website, and in 2004-2005, they got to work on their first actual album, Hinterland, but even before the album even came out, they got invited to Nearfeat 2005, the only band ever invited solely on the strength of two MP3s! And rightfully so, as Hinterland certainly lives up to those expectations. Unfortunately those MP3s did not appear on this CD, after all, it wouldn't all fit if they did, and included the four cuts that are on the disc. This CD got released on the Laser's Edge label, a mail order company that's also a record label, in which White Willow recorded for (not to mention this label reissued lots of great prog).
The group consisted of keyboardist Lars Fredrik Frøislie, drummer Martin Nordrum Kneppen, bassist Kristian Karl Hultgren, guitarist Morton Andreas Eriksen, and vocalist Tony Johannessen. I really think Wobbler is the next best thing to Änglagård, including a similar "no keyboards after 1975" policy. They definately blow Sinkadus right out of the water! This approach is totally retro, so if you're fearing another Marillion, relax, nothing like that here! Frøislie simply lays it thick with Mellotron, Hammond organ and even Mini Moog, he's credited to a ton of other keyboards, but he don't use them as frequently, while the whole band takes a similar approach to Änglagård: play one thing, move on to the next, return to a theme occasionally to let you know, and so on. There are some rather loud and aggressive passages, and gentler, more laidback passages. "Serenade For 1652" is a very short Mellotron introduction, consisting of tron cellos. The title track is at its lengthiest, at over 27 minutes, you might think the band would totally outstay its welcome way before its over, but not at all: it's top-quality prog all the way! I also notices plenty of difference with Wobbler from Änglagård, for one thing, I hear stronger ELP and Gentle Giant influences at times, they also play a Mini Moog, while Änglagård weren't all that big on synths, not to mention the drummer has his own style, rather than imitating Mattias Olsson. Also it seems that at times, Wobbler can jam, there are some nice, short jams found from time to time. And most of all: Wobbler sings in English (sometimes with vocal harmonies), which Änglagård did not. Tony Johannessen does often have a rather dramatic voice, which needs getting a little used to. The next two cuts, "Rubato Industry" and "Clair Obscur" continues in this same vein, I really love this approach, because you'll never know what you'll expect next! "Clair Obscur" ends with this mellow piano that's not unlike how Änglagård's Epilog ended. In fact, the beginning and end of Hinterland reminds me of how Epilog begins and ends (short beginning that starts with Mellotron, ending that ends with somber piano).
Wobbler isn't free of criticisms. Many criticized the band of not really offering anything new, citing bands like Änglagård, Landberk, Sinkadus, Anekdoten, White Willow, plus any given '70s band like King Crimson, Genesis, Yes, Gentle Giant, etc. as having done this kind of stuff before. Even I can see the band wears their influences on their sleeves, and it's true, I can't help but be reminded of any given band from passage to passage. But I thought the music is so good, I, myself, have actually little to complain at all, definately one of the finest prog albums I've ever heard from the New Millenium!
I also like the band's image, the photo shows the band with long hair and beards, they certainly wouldn't look out of place 30 years ago when prog rock was king. Many other newer prog bands I'm used to seeing members with shaved heads (like Rad from Ozric Tentacles), or that "alternative rock" look (members of Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson aside), so it's nice to see a band that not only has a sound that harkens back to the '70s, but also an appearance too!
I really think this is one of the finest prog rock CDs I bought in a long time, truly a must-have, in my opinion!
Great retro progressive rock.......2006-10-21
This is a VERY pleasant listen. In the vein of King Crimson or Anglagard. The band went to great lengths to recreate a very 70's prog sound, having read their bio on The Laser's Edge site (the label this was released on.) Using instruments from that era (God, has it been that long?), they manage to achieve this endeavor AND create some top- notch music to boot. All the tracks are lengthy, except for the short intro at the beginning, but by NO means boring. Quite mellow, not any bombastic guitar lines, but very enjoyable. Good bedtime music, sort- of like Close To The Edge (Yes.) Not alot of vocals, but the ones included are nice, not at all annoying. The more I listen to this, the more I realise that this is one of my favorite "quiet" progressive recordings. Would definitely purchase more music from this band. Oh yeah.... check out the MELLOTRON swell in the middle of track 2, "Hinterland." Does that sound identical to the awesome one on King Crimson's "Epitaph" or what???
A tide of hope from distant shores.......2006-08-28
Within the discouraging poverty of current musical trends Wobbler emerged in 2005 with this debut album of spectacular progessive rock. Avoiding commercial tendencies and relying instead on superb musicianship and songcraft this album can in many ways be seen as a throwback to the days of prog rock triumph. The opening notes of the title song 'Hinterland' appear to be an allusion or homage to 'Tarkus' by ELP but turn into a melodic landscape where lush instrumental propulsion and complication reward concentrated attention. A coordinated tapestry of rich keybords, synthesizers, and mellotron are propelled though many tricky musical designs which play out the epic sweep and involvment of these long compositions. Beautiful guitar and woodwind playing(mostly flute) reflects a strong melodic pulse but I'm probably more impressed with some of the active bass playing and the rich series of tones and changing spectrum of sound textures displayed throughout this album. The European and folk music influences are obvious since this band originated from Norway, but a large stylistic diversity is smoothly coordinated into a basically swiftly changing and rocking format. This is not a work that will reveal itself initially, but with a scope and ambition this large, the music will unfold in many accumulating layers of realization and awareness of musical depth. A highly rewarding progressive album!
ANOTHER WORTHY ADDITION TO THE PROG COLLECTION!.......2006-03-26
It is good don't get me wrong, but the pre-hype lead me into expecting much more. From the remnants of the excellant White Willow, Wobbler (whoever thought of that moniker should hang his or her head in shame-the worse name since well, Toad the wet sprocket) have all the right ingrediants lashings of mellotron, thirty minute plus epics (only four tracks here) intricate time signatures and impassioned vocals (unfortunately he isn't used enough) and as per usual with Scandinavian bands the occasional flute solo's (excellant) but i found that some of it did meander and there is very little soloing apart from the aforementioned flute which means that it is one of those albums that will improve only after many plays. Which is a good thing in some ways, but i like my prog a bit more immediate. White Willow fortunately knew how to reign in the ideas that makes there albums so essential. Still it has a wonderful sleeve and the prodiction is sublime. I would highly recommend. Just give the guitarists a look in next time chaps!

Hardly available.......2005-03-09
This has alawys been one of my favorite William Orbit Albums. I owned Strange Cargo I, II, and III, as well as Hinterland. About two years ago, all my CD's got stolen. That sucked... but as I rebuilt my collection, thanks to insurance money, I made my decisions carefully. When it finally came to William Orbit, I stuck with II and Hinterland. I absolutely respect and love every track on Hinterland. A couple years later, I have rebuilt the collection I decided needed to be rebuilt. I now own every Orbit album, as well as every Orton album In short, Hinterland is pretty cool and holds many tracks that should be recognized.
Eh.........2003-03-26
I bought this album after hearing Orbit's genius in his Pieces in a Modern Style album, his incredibly brilliant work with Madonna, and the other production he did with other artists (U2, Melanie C, All Saints). This album, however, is not nearly as sonically unique as I thought. Tracks 2 and 3 stand out as great songs, but the rest is just okay. It's not a bad album by any means, just nothing special.
Why isn't this album available in the USA?.......2003-01-28
This is the best of the Strange Cargo series. I recommend it. Amazon UK has it.
One of William's best..........2002-08-06
I have Strange Cargo 2, 3 and best of and the *disappointing* Pieces In A Modern Style. This is my favorite out of all of them. It's very upbeat and energetic. Montauk Point kicks my butt every time, and I love the guitar work on El Ninjo. Just amazing electronic music here, really. If you can find this in stores, it's well worth the purchase.
Quite simply...the best LP i have ever purchased........1999-06-16
If i could say anything more about this LP...i dont think i could stop. It is the creation upon which i base all other musical journeys. A good friend of mine introduced me to William Orbits music a few years ago...and i just cant get enough of it. I sure wish i knew where she was, because we shared this music together as we did great ideas and heart-felt stories. I have had this LP since its release...and i have replaced it twice already. Loaning it to friends..and just plain ol' wearing it out seems to be the case. If i could only own one CD, it would truly be this one. I cant imagine what William Orbit could do to top this rythmical journey into the musical depths of space...but what ever it is...when ever it comes...it will become another treasure to cherish.

Donal Coghlan and Gerry Leonard - Pure Genius!.......2004-05-12
I've had the good pleasure of listening to this CD and being a fan of this band since 1990, when I worked at a radio station and this CD was one of the cutouts. I'm one of their biggest fans in the world, their music incorporates various elements of Celtic melodies, solid rock-n-roll composition as well as the ever-present comparison to the likes of an early U2. They were well on their way to that milestone when Kurt Cobain and the dreary Seattle scene took the wind out of a lot more talented sails and thus began the grunge scene.
Be that as it may, I understand that Gerry Leonard is now David Bowie's guitarist and Donal Coghlan was for a time scoring music with the Galway Int'l Film Festival. You know, with my being a die-hard Excalibur fan, I tried to do the Pink Floyd thing and match certain songs of this CD up with the movie, and you know, it actually works! For example, 'Galway Bay' and 'Aeroplanes' match well with a couple of scenes in the movie and they seem to complement each other quite nicely, but I digress. If you like good music, period, from a good band, period, Hinterland's "Kissing the Roof" is the one for you. Please Hinterland, reform and put together another album!!
Your biggest fan, Phillip C. Hayes
Just when you find a great band they stop playing.......2004-02-04
I listened to this album years ago... I loved it. I tried to find it... no luck. Well its here and I'm gettting it.
The album uses a mixture of old and new. Many of the melodic overtones are haunting and sugestive of tone painting. The use of the electric guitar (some times over used in this style) is compelling and appropriate.
If I were to go to the pub down the street, I would hope to find music like this. Music that makes you think while you are in the company of friends. Sadly the mates at my pub, don't have near as much tallent as these folks.
This is music that would be equally at home in the pub or on the concert stage.
It is not overproccessed and has at times a rough edge to it, something many musicians could learn from.
If you like artist like Beth Orton, or U2, you'll love this.
The other sad bit to this diatribe... they are no longer together and this is the last place I was told to find the CD.
Music like emotion can be a fleeting thing, here then gone, but you will never forget what you felt when you heard it or felt it.

READY...AIM...FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-02-05
After listening to AIM's "Hinterland", I can say this isn't straight hip-hop as we know it. In fact, AIM offers a vast array of downtempo, pop, funk and acid jazz with embellishments of hip-hop. IMO, "Hinterland" would have sounded even better without the rap music, still, it's full of other surprises that overcompensate for this like the dreamy, "The Girl Who Fell Through the Ice", the super electro-funky, "What Do People Do All Day?", the sexy, 70s flavored "Good Disease", and the 60s go-go jamfest, "Vipco!" All in all, "Hinterland" is a very impressive sophomore effort from Andy Turner, and should fit quite nicely in your CD collection!
"AIM" are one of my all time favourite acts......here's why:.......2003-10-30
Producer "Andy Turner" followed up the wide acclaimed "Cold Water Music" debut with 2002's "Hinterland"....sticking Closely to the formula that won him so much critical acclaim, he creates another batch of songs, that work just as tremendously well as they did on "Cold Water Music" (possibly tracks that couldn't have fitted onto the first album). Maybe it's the reintroduction of mainstay "Kate Roger's" phenomenal vocal abilities, maybe it's the tighter production, or even the selection of underground rappers lending vocals to several tracks, or even possibly the unarguable magnificence of melodies & beat construction on display, but I personally give this album the very, very, very slimmest of margins, the nod over it's predecessor (although I'm in the minority), but either way!!!...this undoubtedly proves that "Aim" is a Trip-Hop act of par Excellence.
great cd.......2003-06-13
when i first heard this album i was really really surprised, its got a great mix of rock rap and electronic music with a different feel to each song, it makes for a really good listen throughout the whole cd
let it grow.......2003-03-20
As exhibitied by others, it seems difficult to review this album without a comparison to Cold Water Music, so here goes. Cold Water Music hits you more immediately. Each track is distinct and harder. Hinterland is a more cohesive, mellow whole. And, in my opinion, more blunted. The one clear advantage CWM has over this release are the MC tracks. I love Diamond D, but his east-coast flow is NOTHING in comparison to the hell raised by AG on CWM. Anyway, if you like Aim's general approach, this album will grow on you. Cop it.
Off the Charts Groove.......2003-02-26
I have slowly begun to enjoy the sound of hip-hop, as I discover more artists who strip the hedonism out of the music and go for artistry and talent. Blackalicious is another favorite that lands in this general camp. My brother introduced me to this album and I am impressed, as the grooves are fun, and the rhymes are intelligent and entertaining. Track 8 is a real bomb, but the rest is fair to great. I can't compare other albums from this group, but if you want enjoyable music from bona fide artists trying to innovate and do something new, try out this album.
