Having long since shed their image as hip-hop's clown princes, the Beastie Boys now bring what feels like their emeritus recording, a celebratory instrumental memoir of all of the influences (except punk) that brought them to their secure place among hip-hop's fickle elite. The party opens with the aptly titled "B for My Name," its plodding bounce staking claim to the mid-tempo path the album treads almost throughout. "14th St. Break" picks up the pace, especially in the auxiliary percussion breakdown, complete with rally whistle. Then, beginning with "Suco de Tangerina," the album drops into a deep groove cut from dub- and dancehall-tinged ostinati that carry through a full third of its tracks. Among these, "The Gala Event" suffers from a lack of developmental motion that characterizes many of these tracks, but highlights still abound. "Off the Grid," for example, departs from the otherwise unbreakable chill and rips the proceedings wide open, blooming again and again in a series of pulsing riffs that celebrate the very institution of the instrumental groove. More than 20 years since Licensed to Ill took a long, irreverent piss into the mainstream, it seems you can still fight for your right to party. --Jason Kirk

The Mix-Up is Beastie Boys' first-ever full album of all-new instrumental material. The follow-up to 2004's To The 5 Boroughs, The Mix-Up features Diamond, Horovitz and Yauch back on drums, guitar and bass, with able assistance from Keyboard Money Mark and percussionist Alfredo Ortiz, on 12 brand new wordless, sample-less, scratchless originals. Sure to please fans of the instrumental cuts from Check Your Head and Ill Communication and the cult hit compilation album made up largely of those tracks, The In Sound From Way Out!, The Mix-Up finds NYC's favorite sons drawing on one of their arsenal's primary strengths and pushing it into bold new directions.

Beasties Instrumental.......2007-08-07
I predicted years ago The Beastie Boys should just do an all instumental recording. I got what I wanted and I am satisfied.
Beasties are Back.......2007-08-04
Off the charts outstanding! The Boys have mastered their instrumental stylings, and have created an amazing cornicopia of sound. Far more advanced than earlier instrumentals that were wooven through out various albums, or collected on 'In sounds from way out'. If you dig this side of the Beasties, you need not dig any further!
the beastie boys have done it again.......2007-07-30
a lot of people are basing this album on from their prevous popular albums like check your head, hello nasty (my favorite), 5 boroughs, ect. but there are a lot of ignorant people out there and dont realize that they have already made an album with just instruments called the in sound from the way out. and it was excellent and so was this album. put it on and just sit back and chill to it. the beastie boys do a great job mixing it up, which is one of the reasons why i love the beastie boys and one of the reasons why they are my all time favorite! its all about the music, a good band can make music with lyrics but a great group can produce music without lyrics. this album has been everything i have asked for, if you loved anything from the beastie boys, im sure you will love this. i know i did!
Skip it.......2007-07-30
I would say if you are new to the band you might find this appealing. For me it was not the same as past musical experiences I had in listening to albums of the past, including several that came after the famous "Licensed to Ill" which I have heard is one of Capitol Records all-time best selling albums. This CD left me frustrated as I did not feel there was very much creativity at all. As they say; "to each his own" but I personally felt this CD was a letdown.
Poor.......2007-07-28
Picked this up, was so excited, first song...all insturmental...i was like ya cool, i dig, then next song...no lyrics, all the way through the 12 tracks. very dissapointed, sure the mysic is good, but thats not what makes the beastie boys the beastie boys. if you are eager to listen then give the sample on amazon a quick listen, chances are that is all you will need

As you might expect, Timeless isn't your parents' Sergio Mendes. Take "Mais Que Nada," the opener from that topselling staple of post-60s, post-bossa, near-kitsch Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66: Greatest Hits. Here it's no simple, slinky groove. The Black-Eyed Peas are along for the bumpin' ride. What it amounts to is the same intercultural collision that happened when bossa nova met jazz and pop via Stan Getz's tenor sax, except here the meeting is between the lounge and, presumably, the street. John Legend and India.Arie keep the session on a downtempo, neo Brazilian vibe on "Please Baby Don't" and the title track (respectively). Once those are tunes end, though, it's back to the bump and the beats and the irresistible party vibe of the set. Don't fret, though, as the Peas keep things light enough to trigger innocent headbobs and chilled out dance steps. Just as you might hear Timeless and agree that it ain't your parents' Sergio, your parents can also hear will.i.am's and the Peas's pivotal roles and say that it's not their kids' Black-Eyed Peas, either --Andrew Bartlett
Description
Timeless is the magnificent new album by the legendary Sergio Mendes. Produced by and featuring Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas, this album is a wholly original synthesis of music from the man who--40 years ago--brought Brazil 66 and "Mas Que Nada" to the world. Timeless beautifully blends the urban culture of Brazil, samba and bossa nova with the urban culture of America, hip hop and rap, the results of which are truly spectacular.
Putting together the project, Will and Sergio, of course, brought in the Black Eyed Peas. They also recruited some of the biggest urban-pop artists of the last several decades, each a Sergio fan, to contribute to various tracks. Featured artists include Erykah Badu, Justin Timberlake, India.Arie, Q-Tip, John Legend, Jill Scott, Stevie Wonder, and members of the Roots and Jurassic 5.

As good for dancing as it is for drinking martinis!.......2007-07-27
This CD is just what I expected, great "modernization" of Sergio Mendes' ideas, cool and easy-listening rhythms that make this album as good for dancing as it is for drinking martinis at a Sunset Lounge Bar
Street meets the bossa beat---4.5 stars.......2007-07-02
I didn't like Sergio growing up in the day, I was a Motown fan and couldn't get down with bossa nova or latin beats. "Timeless" manages to keep some of the sound of the old Brazil 66 and add some new flavor via Stevie Wonder who was one of my faves back then. Of course, they've brought in John Legend with some new soul. Then, they top that off by bringing in the Black Eyed Peas, who I'd never have thought of, and the concept just works.
Loved it!!.......2007-05-16
This album is a classic! My kids actually introduced me to the album. I'm a Sergio Mendes fan from way back. Buy it!!!
I love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-10
I am a 52 y/o old fart but once was a cool college d.j. I am not a big rap/hip-hop fan but it sounds fantastic combined with a latin groove. When I was spinning LP's in the late 70's, we thought Sergio Mendes had "sold-out" to pop. What did we know? His music, whether "roots" or "pop" is absolutely beautiful. I admire the creativity of the artists who have made the Timeless CD worthy of its title.
Fantastico!! Eu amo Brasil!.......2007-05-08
This album is off the hook! I never knew this hidden gem was so good. It is amazing what Will.I.Am and Sergio did. There are so many songs that are my favs such as Mas Que Nada, The Frog, that Samba Song, and etc. There is a great compilation of rap, samba, bossa nova, singing, and etc. Black Eye Peas, Q-Tip, Black Thought (Roots), John Legend, and etc. makes this a wonderful compilation and celeration of the beautiful Brazilian culture.
My wife is Brazilian and we love the album so much we even played some of it at our wedding reception. This album should be selling a lot more and deserve worldwide acclaim. Sergio Mendes "Timeless" is truly the best kept secret...you gotta listen to this!

A couple of years after asking Can I Borrow a Dollar? and before he lost the "sense" in his moniker, the Chicago MC now known as Common dropped this impressive sophomore set, marking him as one of the most versatile MCs to emerge in the 1990s. Shirking the often derivative flows of his debut, Resurrection finds the Windy City rhymer ably assisted by the voluptuous jazzy excursions of producers No I.D. & Ynot. He revels in ear-tickling wordplay, slinging countless witty punchlines and similes on "Orange Pineapple Juice" and "Communism"--songs that require several listens to unravel. Far from relentless chest-thumping bravado, Common's lyrics have substance, exploring inner faults and fears on "Book of Life" and touching poignancy on his classic metaphorical ode to hip-hop culture, "I Used to Love H.E.R.," a track that is perhaps more relevant today than when it was released. The beginnings of Common's ongoing struggle between his boyish effusiveness and moral responsibility, which figures greatly in his subsequent releases, is captured on this essential release. --Del F. Cowie

this is a 5 star cd

This album is aight........2007-06-24
Yup, it's just alright to me. I know that many rate this album as one of the greatest, but I didn't hear that when I listened to it. When I heard this album back in the say when it first came out, I didn't like it at all. I figured that since my tastes have changed since then, I'd give it another shot. So, I got it from the local library and while I like it better now then I did then, I still can't really feel this album too much. My first Common album (the first one that I bought) was "One Day..." Now, that was a very good album, one of the best to date IMO. Since then, I've purchased every album that Common has come out with and have not been disappointed. It appears to me that he went through a serious change between "Resurrection" and One Day..." I guess that he went through a process of maturing and began writing better lyrics, which is why I like "One Day..." a whole lot better than "Resurrection" His style of rhyming and the lyrics here I just did not like. I loved the jazz infused beats and his pop's rap at the end, but I just didn't really care too much for the songs. I still like the album some, but not as much as his other albums.

In the vein of the great MCs of this thing we call Hip-Hop, Common arises from the fray with his sophmore opus, which, is a masterpiece. Period. This album truly showed the dexterity he shares with the greats of the game all while sprinkling consciousness on our heads and in our ears. Kudos to the chef!

De La Soul are remembered as the premier Native Tongues posse, those rappers who got low-key, self-consciously thoughtful, and jazzy in the face of gangsta's hardcore threats. But A Tribe Called Quest may have been even stronger, especially on their excellent second album, the bass-thumping, heavily jazz-sampled The Low End Theory. According to the opening "Excursions," rapper Q-Tip's old man says the disc's jazz-rap "reminded him of bebop," and Q calls himself "prominent like Shakespeare." But if Charlie Parker had ever written poetic couplets and backed them with funky-drummer and Ron Carter-on-bass grooves this irresistible, he might have been as big as the Bard and Brother James combined. --David Cantwell
Customer Reviews:
Easily a classic!.......2007-05-26
I recently bought this and I'm regretting not buying this earlier! You know, Tribe has, without a doubt, revolutionized rap. For a 1991 album, this doesnt sound very much like in its era, you could place this in any era and it would still feel fresh. The music is perfect, the lyrics are perfect, the flow is perfect, this album is timeless! Each song is filled with so much, and Q-Tip raps so well.
This is a must buy for any rap fan, just like Illmatic.
My Favorite Group of All-Time .......2007-02-14
Giving "The Low End-Theory" anything less than 4 stars is like scuffing at Michaelangelos "The Last Judgement" in the Sistine Chapel. I mean, I wonder if people actually got a hold of a chopped and screwed version of this masterwork. The only other reasonable explanation is the manufacturers messed up and placed a Vanilla Ice record inside the album cover. There is a reason why "The Low-End Theory" received the impossible to get 5 mics in the source. They released back to back to back classics in a span of 3-4 years, ranked #154 in Rolling Stones Greatest albums of all-time, ranked #32 in Spins greatest albums of the 1990's, received extreme critical acclaim from every major JAZZ critics poll, and is brought to the forefront as one of the greatest hip hop records ever in any hip hop discussion. Not bad for the worst group ever with foul lyrics and no roots in jazz.
So why the hell is A Tribe Called Quest so popular. In three words, "Beats, Rhymes, Life". This album is a consummate link between the jazz and hip hop generation showing that they originate from the same center, as displayed in the amazing "Excursions". It also displays the growth of a young and hungry Phife Dawg becoming a star lyricist rather than a sidekick in the shadows as exemplified in "Buggin' Out" and "Butter". "Show Business" is one of the greatest songs that attacks major labels which signs acts and crosses them over because they don't have respect for real hip hop. The videos for arguably the three greatest singles on any hip hop record, "Check The Rhime" "Jazz" and "Scenario" were so groundbreakingly fresh that their ideas are still being jacked by video makers todays. Who can forget Busta Rhymes breakthrough performance.
Overall, this album captures everything great about hip hop and what it used to be. I could quote lyrics on this album all day. I could rave about the creative use of sampling and chances Tribe took to risk ridicule or alienation. Tribe is popular because they were able to connect with their fanbase that so many bubblegum critics and so-called artists could never hold a candle to. So grab a Q-Tip and clean your ears out because "The Low-End Theory" is timeless music. As a poetic Q-Tip once said, "I love my young nation" - and it loves him back.
one of the worst groups ever.......2007-02-04
I love hip hop and I love jazz, but a tribe called quest has roots in neither. Just because you have some vibes and flutes in the music doesn't make it "jazz influenced". Their rapping (especially q-tip's) is extremely symmetrical, showing absolutely no relationship to jazz whatsoever. I mean, how many times can you rhyme "hip-hop" to "bebop"? This is one of the worst cd's I've ever bought. I'd rather recommend Aceyalone for capturing the true innovative spirit of jazz and using it in his hip hop. I just don't understand why a tribe called quest is so popular...perhaps the only interesting part of the album is hearing Ron Carter lay down some great bass lines, but it can't save this extremely lame cd. I've never heard a more boring hip hop album.
It's like Butter Baby!.......2006-11-14
Second classic in a row from the Tribe. Great fusion of Jazz, Rap and the great chemistry of Q-Tip and Phife Diggy.
Standout Tracks:
All of them.
Check it out!
This album provides some of Hip Hops intelligent rhythms and fun lyrics........2006-09-22
Got to love Q and Phife! I grew up hearing and watching them as well as our other forefathers of hip hop. One thing that makes an album good is the ability to be so complex that one can listen to it over and over and never get bored with the songs such as theirs. If you dig the Roots, Digital Planets, Black Eyed Peas, or any other hip-hop group that has the slightest tinge of jazz to it, you have "The Low End Theory" to thank. Ali Shaheed Muhammed fuses up-beat hip-hop with funky jazz, and must of felt real good when he was finished. But it's not like this album was simply influential and not essential, or that it's solely revolutionary in one sense and not able to stand on its own in others.
All through the album the beats are deep and the bass is funky without being overbearing. There are a few tracks that are less than superb, but the album is still great. "Buggin' Out," "Butter," "Rap Promoter," "Rhymes and Stuff," "Jazz," and "Scenario" are all perfect. All these tracks either have your heads nodding, hips shaking, and minds working. The way the music matches Q-tips rhymes flawlessly always astounds me and Phife's lyrics keep the beat going.
Q-Tip and Phife are two of the most skilled lyricists and MCs of all time, and their vocal contributions to Ali's beats do nothing but enhance them. This album stands out as their finest. For those who do not listen to hip hop, this would be an excellent choice for a "symbol" rap album. I know few who have failed to be satisfied, and most are mesmerized. As for rap fans, none should be allowed to call themselves a hip hop head if they do not already have this laying around your rack/desk/or shelf.

This might have been the album Tribe Called Quest wanted to make from the very beginning. It's their most even, consistent album of the original trilogy that also includes People's Instinctive Travels... and The Low End Theory. But in spite of this, or maybe because of it, it's also their most uninteresting. With so many competent tracks, there's no chance for something to stand out above the pack, like "Scenario" did on Low End Theory or "Can I Kick It" did on People's Instinctive Travels. The celebration is there ("Stir It Up"), the jazz drums kick ("Oh My God"), and the stand-up bass dribbles, keeping perfect pace with Q-Tip's unmistakable mic-touch ("Electric Relaxation"). There's even a Native Tongues armistice/reunion with De La Soul ("Awards Tour"). Although it comes together like a seamless tutorial in jazz hip-hop style, it comes together so damn well that it's hard for any one track to excel, cursing the album with consistent quality. --Todd Levin

Classic Hip Hop.......2007-03-29
I have owned this CD several times in the past 15 years. I have had tapes that have broken and cd's that have scratched and I will continue to purchase and keep this in my repetoire of music because the beats and sentiments are just as valid today as they were in the 90's. You can't go wrong by owning this CD in all of its forms.
I am a Midnight Marauder- Top 5 Favorite albums of all-times!!!.......2006-08-11
This was an album that I went thru multiple packs of batteries to keep it playing in my walkman back in '93-94 time. I can honestly say that every track on this album has its own presence that at some point of time- made me love each and every song. The chemistry with ATCQ was unmatched at that time and can never be overlooked. My top picks from this classic are: "Electric Relaxation", "Oh My God", "8 Million Stories", "God Lives Through", "Keep It Rollin'" and "Lyrics To Go". This is ATCQ's best work to me out of their 5 album releases. Buy it now!!!!
The best "Jazz Hip hop" money can buy........2006-08-05
A tribe Called Quest's 2nd 1992 release Midnight Marauders is what I would consider a very well rounded excursion into the world of Alternative Hip Hop. Some of song's have a serious nature to them such as "8 Million Stories" , in which Q-Tip tells multiple stories about how life as a whole can be hard, just on normal people, and his execution over the slurring Jazzy beat is classic Tip. Another song with more serious subject matter would be "Sucka Nigga" in which The N-Word is discussed, and, the social consequences, and history of the N-Word is also discussed. Q-Tip explains that as much as he hates using the word, he cant help but sometimes say it, because it is so prevalent, and used so often in modern African American culture. He also expresses disgust for the fact that respectable Black men now use the same word with little, or no thought that racist white slave masters used to use in the South. He also disses phony rappers, or "Sucka Niggas" in this song. The thing though about this song, and all of the "Political Thrillers" if you will on this album are all delivered over beautiful Jazzy light hearted instrumentals, which as weird as this may sound, it fits perfectly.
Tan there is more light hearted song's like "Oh My God" , or "Electric Relaxation" which is basically about having sex with fine women. Even though the subject matter is tired, and constantly used, the delivery of this song by Tip, and Phife who exchange short verses is exquisite, and they as always fit the beat perfectly, and mesh together. The lyric's are also nice, and refreshing.
Another cool thing about this album is that there is many weird, and not expected instrumental bridges in the beats that are unexpected, but cool. The first one comes in "Steve Biko (Stir it Up)" in which there is this out of this world sounding highly spacey hook, which sounds like someone is singing at the top of there lungs in a massive room by themselves, and then after that is a 20 second long bridge in which Tip deliver's quickly said lines to no beat, but DJ Scratching, but it is so well mixed and delivered you can't help but love it and nod your head.
Overall this album is a nice refreshing, and creative break from Rap, into the world of Jazzy Hip Hop, and no one has done it as well before or after as Tribe did.
Don't Say Nine Trey 'Cause This Is For Eternity.......2006-07-28
And that's exactly what 'Midnight Marauders' is...an album for eternity! Hundreds of years from now, this album will still resonate through the ears of its listeners. How many groups do you know (especially hip hop) can make back to back to back classic records in a span of three - four years? As a matter of fact, how many records do you know where you can play the whole thing without reachin' for the skip button? The Tribe just had a way of connecting with their fanbase and they continued to uplift their legacy with their greatest offering yet.
Once again, Phife and Tip are a two headed monster tearin' the frame out of some smooth like butter beats that will keep heads bouncin'. What makes A Tribe Called Quest's third record one of my all-time personal favorites are all the little things that real rap listeners notice. Maybe it's the xylaphones sprinkled in on "Award Tour", Ali Shaheed Muhammods masterfully cut sample of Rakim on "We Can Get Down", or Q-Tips descriptive tale of New York nightlife on "Midnight". Whatever the reason, the beats and rhymes effortlessly go hand in hand. Hell, Phife is so confident in his mic skills that he boasts, "I'm Jordan with the mic/ Wanna gamble"?
You may never hear such a cohesive album like 'Midnight Marauders' again. Even the computerized voice drops knowledge, bridging the gaps between songs. The subject matter was diversified to keep people on their toes. Q-Tip educates on the controversial usage of the N-word with quips such as, "You know the word dummy/ other people in the community think its crummy/ But I don't, 'cause the youth we em-brace adversity it goes right with the race/...and bein' that we use it as a term of endearment/". Phife tells his version of freaky tales on the hypnotic "8 Million Stories". Large Professor (the only outsider on the production tip) produced one beat which amazingly fit perfectly with the tribe vibe on "Keep It Rollin'". Who could forget that chant of "yeah, yeah now check the method"? In spite of the superb quality of songwriting and musicality, the unquestionable standout is "Electric Relaxation". The song is a crowning achievement of hip hop in its purest form. Ali hooks up a beat for the hip hop hall of fame as Tip and Phife give a monumental performance.
In conclusion, 'Midnight Marauders' was a masterpiece from the brilliant sequencing to the who' who in hip hop album cover. There were actually three album covers of different rap stars in the background with the black cover being the rarest. You have to wonder if ATCQ was mocking the inside of the cover, standing by the clock because of the timelessness of their music they put out. They even teased their listeners by bringing the computerized voice in, after "The Chase" saying it concludes the program when there was still two incredible songs to follow. Whatever the case, never say the year 'cause this one is for eternity!
A.T.C.Q.'s finest production of ever.......2006-06-09
I love jazzy hip-hop of the early '90s and if you do too, this is the album you must listen to! all the songs are wonderful but there are some of these which are something of supernatural like the famous (and the most beautiful of the entire cd!) "Award Tour", "Steve Birko(stir it up)" and "Midnight".
enjoy this pearl of REAL hip-hop!!!!

Adding pop savvy to their soul-disco mix, Jamiroquai grabbed the attention of MTV and Top 40 radio and won a Grammy with this platinum-selling album, their third. It's a fine record, with warm keyboards, sweet strings, and irrepressible grooves grounding Jay Kay's sublime vocals and fueling the hits ("Virtual Insanity," "Cosmic Girl," the title track). That voice--elastic, jazzy--is the fire of the band, but immaculate guitar sounds, snappy backup vocals, and clever old-school soul samples (Eddie Harris on "Alright," Esther Phillips on "High Times") are the details that create perfection. Balancing the dance-ready, radio-friendly tracks are the ballads "Everyday" and "Spend a Lifetime," the reggae-styled "Drifting Along," and a couple of didjeridoo instrumentals. --Suzanne McElfresh

Travelling without Moving.......2007-01-09
Although the music is somewhat "retro", (disco throwback), it's still really good listening.
Question?.......2006-11-09
I am a real jazz lover, old school, new school, acid jazz, neo-soul, funk, you name it. This particular Jamiroquai cd is everthing. In my opinion, it rocks. There's not one song on the whole disk that I don't totally enjoy. I only recently heard of the group, and this cd is the only one I have heard so far. I would like to know if there's any other Jamiroquai cd's I should check out? I need to know if there's maybe another work as good as, if not better, than this one. I am one of those people who hate to buy a cd and only like one or two songs on the whole thing. If you know of any other Jamiroquai cd's, or any other artist who sounds as awesome as this one does, please let me in on it.
I Like Their Style.......2006-11-08
I'm not really a fan of Jamiroquai, not that I don't like their music before or after this album, this is just the first album of their I've listened to. The very first song from Jamiroquai that I've ever heard was the single for this album Virtual Insanity. To me it is a song with a smooth sound that should catch everyone's ear. After the second track the rest of the album was unpredictable for me because Virtual Insanity sets a certain sound that most artists would stick with. Every song on this album has its own distinct sound and feeling to it, that's my favorite thing about this album that it has the ability to give something different with every song. You get a couple of really beautiful slow songs that could melt metal and though the lyrics are lacking "Spend a life time" the music picks it up. You've got songs that you can chill to and are really the definition for a perfect chill song. For people that don't know much about Jamiroquai like myself I think Traveling without moving is the album to start with because it is sure to get you hooked.
This slick album brings a mature string of arrangements.......2006-07-24
I remember years ago when I saw the music video for "Virtual Insanity" with its unique special effects and Jay Kay's signature vocal "sound," I had an inkling that it was going to be a good album to listen to. It's definitely a quick pick-me-up! You've got all different kinds of music on it. Reggae, rock, pop, jazz... etc. Whatever kind of music that floats your boat, you'll probably find on this album.
My favorite tracks are "Virtual Insanity" (of COURSE...) "Alright" (just makes you want to dance), "Cosmic Girl," "Traveling Without Moving," "Everyday," and "Drifting Along." I have to admit I'm rarely able to "sit" through the disc in its entirety. It seems to be a work that is three fourths complete with eight of the thirteen cuts exceptional and five being substandard.
Jay Kay really brings a unique style of Jazz mixed with Dance that sends you into a world of groovy romantic fantasy, with mind-fuzzing bass and dreamful lyrics. The flourish of various instruments harmonizing into one beautiful sound is enough to keep you excited once you place this album into your player, other than that 'Travelling without Moving' is good album to have due to it's collaboration.
Space.......2006-04-04
Driven by a 70's funk, dance release, Travelling Without Moving, is a deeper push for Jamiroquai and for the time. "Cosmic Girl" is a good example of the album's direction with its mixture of disco, funk and dance that feels like a roller rink song. The variety found on this LP is apparently unmatched with titles such as the mellow love song "Everyday" quickly takes the spotlight. For a more Jamaican / Reggae instrumentation "Drifting Along" shows the versatility of Jamiroquai with its exotic atmosphere. Both "Didjerama" and "Didjital Vibrations" are instrumentals, but track 8 becomes annoying with its looped vibes. "Didjital Vibrations" could stand alone as a jazzy, funk rendition that's only missing crooning vocals to set it off. "Spend A Lifetime" is a romantic tune filled with a beautiful violin arrangement to help complete this album. Track 13 is a bonus track to conclude Travelling Without Moving on a high note or at least an up-beat.

Pete Rock loves horns the way other DJs and producers love drums. It's this obsession with funky horn breaks that sets Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth apart from regular hip-hop bassheads. With its crucial James Brown breaks layered between trumpet and sax loops, coupled with the laid-back vocals of Smooth and Rock, Mecca and the Soul Brother--their first full-length--struts back and forth on that line between rap and soul. Rock's production style is peerless, funky on "If It Ain't Rough, It Ain't Right" and sexy on "Lots of Lovin'." Smooth's liquid freestyle delivery (notably on "Straighten It Out" and "They Reminisce Over You") has been echoed in other skilled MCs (see Common's work). And with their combined skills, Mecca stands up without ever really dating itself. --Todd Levin

Die Hard Fan.......2007-07-05
Put simply, They are the reason I like hip-hop." They were ahead of their time. What a shame!" I wish they would make up and be friends again. They had 2 mind blowing complete albums. Most underrated duo. Sad day for society when they split. Hip and cool, yet socially and politically conscious. If your reading this, you guys are sorely missed! The game has never recovered! Amazing music where we don't have to kill each other in every other line. You guys were of a 'different cloth.
-It would be a dream come true for "Return of 'Mecca and the Soul Brother." 5+ stars.

Follow up to the initial release all souled out EP. Mecca and the soul brother is the full length release that displayed the amazing dj skills of the legendary pete rock and the fantastic lyrics of CL smooth. Rhymes, beats , and life are the main themes that make this a dope album from now until eternity. I wish these brothers could get along so they can make a current release that is just as dope as this one.

Fun, uplifting music, an album you can enjoy from beginning to end. Strongly Recommended!
Ridiculous.......2007-04-06
It's kind of ridiculous how incredible this album is and how it's gotten very little play and hype compared to D4L or Mistah Fab. They made no chart-topping hits, but I guarantee every song is good.

Digable Planets deliberately disavowed the toughness of hip-hop culture: the trio's leader called himself Butterfly, his foil Ladybug purred like Eartha Kitt, and they produced hooks out of lines like "We're just babies, man." Despite occasional flashes of sorrow (like the pro-choice recitation "La Femme Fétal"), the group's happy and laidback on this debut, with tracks made out of old jazz records and finger-snaps, and words that draw on 50s hipster slang. Reachin' spawned the Grammy-winning single "Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)," and after this album, their joyous Blue Note-and-black-lights bounce lost some of its novelty. --Douglas Wolk

THIS WAS A TOTALLY DIFFERENT WAVE FOR '93.......2007-01-25
this album was a sigh of relief at the time along with MIDNIGHT MARAUDERS. i was tired of the west coast stuff by this time. then i hear this bass solo on this night mix. at first i thought it was some straight ahead jazz thang, and then i heard WE LIKE THE BREEZE FLOW STRAIGHT OUT OF OUR LIDS...............and i was like whahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. i was hooked from then on. this album was like coke instead of kool aid at dinner for me. it is a jazzy, breezy, and flowing brand of hip hop that i had not heard before. yes, they were obviously inspired by ATCQ, BUT THIS IS DIFFERENT in that they seem to dig deeper...........into the planet. from beginning to end i love it.......though it wanes a bit in the middle. at the end it picks back up where the first couple of songs began. i hated that they broke up when they did. i think that they could've done some groundbreaking things in hip hop. i wonder what they could've done had they started their own label and had all the control that they desired.
10 Stars (The Best Hip-Hop Album I Own).......2007-01-21
Yes, indeed, the title says it all. Many reviewers may think that that's a bold statement, but yo, it is what it is. Digable Planets IS hip-hop. Listening to this album, and their follow up "Blowout Comb", just gives me a feeling that I just dont get listening to other hip-hop records. DP gives me a feelin that I dont even get from the greats: Biggie, Jay, Nas, Pac, etc. I think the main reason is because their sound is just so different. Not only is this hip-hop, this is MUSIC!! The way DP brings the world of hip-hop with jazz is just genius. I love the beats, the instruments, their lyrics, their flow, and their voices. I just hate that I slept on these cats back in 93-94, but hey, it wasnt entirely my fault. The west coast had the game locked back then. But yo, I'm elated that I finally woke up, albeit 12 years later.
I love the follow up, "Blowout Comb" (the album that actually turned me on to DP; I heard Blowout Comb first) but I would have to say that "Reachin" is slightly better. The two albums are different to me. "Reachin" is just "feel good", jazzy hip hop, and "Blowout Comb" is "chill", jazzy hip hop. I prefer "Reachin" cause, even though I'm a laid back cat, I rather "feel good" than to "chill". "Reachin" is #1 for me as far as hip hop goes, and "Blowout Comb" is 1A.
1) It's Good To Be Here--9.5/10- What a way to get things jumpin off
2) Pacifics--9.5/10- This track is "red hot"
3) Where I'm From--10/10- My favorite joint on the album. It just feels so good.
4) What Cool Breezes Do--10/10- So chill, i love the instruments
5) Time and Space--8/10- didnt feel it initially, now i love it!
6) Rebirth of Slick--10/10- this joint is just classic like that
7) Last of the Spiddyocks--9/10
8) Jimmi Diggin Cats--8.5/10
9) La Femme Fetal--9/10-This isnt a song, it's just like a poem to a cool beat. Butterfly gets deep on this one.
10) Escapism--10/10- i love it. so funky, yet so chill
11) Appointment at the Fat Clinic--7/10
12) Nickel Bags--10/10- you'll be high off DP after this joint

When three unknown cats from NY dropped this jewel in '93, they changed the way people approached hip hop jazz. They weren't the first to do it, but they dropped one of the best albums in the entire sub genre. Tracks like "Jimmi Diggin' Cats", "Nickel Bags", "Where I'm From" (which has an even better remix), and "Swoon Units" are easily classics while "Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)" is one of those songs where you remember exactly what you were doing the first time you heard it. There's no denying the quality of this album. The album is produced entirely by Butterfly (now known as Cherrywine) and the beats are nothing less than perfection. This joint is easily a classic. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.
Despite what some other reviewers are telling you, there is NOTHING wrong with this album. It's flawless from top to bottom. Actually, now that I think about it, forget about standout tracks, the whole album is tight.
Reachin' is one of those albums that are so great that they're practically impossible to duplicate. The vibe captured on this album still holds up great 13 years after it's release. This is a hip hop must have. If you dig the marriage of hip hop and jazz, then do yourself a favor and grab this album. You should also check out their 2nd LP (Blowout Comb). Though it sounds nothing like this album, it's just as tight. They would disband after their sophomore release, but they certainly made magic while they were together. I recommend making this a collection piece.
Standout Tracks: La Femme Fetal, Where I'm From, Nickel Bags, What Cool Breezes Do, Swoon Units, Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat), Jimmi Diggin' Cats (My Favorite), Escapism (Gettin' Free), Time & Space (A New Refutation Of), and Appointment At The Fat Clinic

People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm is, quite simply, one of the finest albums in hip-hop. It's easy to argue that A Tribe Called Quest reached their zenith on this, their debut album: though they went on to produce another world-class disc (The Low End Theory) and broadened their palates and their consciousness, never again were they quite this naturally free and easy. Q-Tip and Phife's delivery is deceptively simple, flowing like wine and tasting like candy, and Jairobi adds some contrast. The music, so self-assured that it never raises its voice to make a spectacle, follows suit. Four albums later, on their last tour, songs from Paths of Rhythm still were at the top of the set list. --Randy Silver

I REMEBER MY LIL CUZN LET ME BORROW THIS TAPE,I HAD IT FOR A MINUTE AN HAD NO INTENTIONS OF GIVIN IT BACC.

The best hip hop album by a group!!!!!.......2007-01-26
I can honestly say that when I first heard A tribe Called Quest, I was very young. (I was eight years old when their debut album came out, I am now 24). Their feel good lyrics, and interesting videos made me a fan, a lifelong fan. I especially like Bonita Applebum. Although I was too young to understand what that song means, I do now. There should be more groups like A Tribe Called Quest. They also need their induction in VH1 Hip Hop Honors. Positive rap needs to be celebrated.
A Tribe Essential (Rating: 10 out of 10- -5 stars).......2007-01-12
This right here was the beginning of the phenomonal group A Tribe Called Quest. Their 1990 debut "People's Instinctive Travels And The Paths Of Rhythm", a 5 mic classic from The Source (back when those things were accurate). And with this album, you have no option but to love this music, as the chemistry between Q-Tip, Phife, Ali, and Jarobi. Lyrically, no one could touch these guys, especially Tip who rhymes on the majority of this album. A lot of these songs were just fun to listen to, like their big hits "I Left My Wallet In El Segundo", and "Bonita Applebum". A few party tracks on this album (going by 1990 standards) like "Ham & Eggs" and "Can I Kick It?" (wonderful song). Production was good too, with a little taste of jazzy flavor that anyone could enjoy.
As for anything bad, I doubt there are any. A personal gripe is that I didn't like the way "Description Of A Fool" closed out the album, but that just my preference. It's still a good song though.
What else can be said? If anyone told you this was an awesome CD, you heard correct. This is the kind of hip hop music that makes me remenise when it was all about having fun and not the way it is here in 2007. If you're looking for an essential hip hop album, I recommend this to you as well as their next two albums. Heck, all the Tribe albums range from good to classic status (even "The Love Movement"), and all should be heard.

They Major.......2006-08-05
On this onje come on now stop it, this is one of the nastiest jazz-rap or hip hop cds I've ever heard, I mean have ya'll listened to this every song is gold, this record I spin just about everyday it's that nice, it's way nicer then 85% of the stuff that comes out these days.
One of the best albums of 1990.......2006-05-07
One of the best albums of 1990, "People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm" is the Tribe's most under-appreciated and over-shadowed album to date. When you think of classic ATCQ, you think "Low End Theory" and "Midnight Marauders", but what about the debut that got them started? Although the classics like "bonita applebum" and "can I kick it" are still getting recognition 16 years later, the other tracks on the album are pretty much left in the dark to be slept on & ignored. For me, this album is equal in brilliance to "Low End Theory" and "Midnight Marauders", and considering this is 1990, it is as fresh as anything they have ever done! Ali Shaheed Muhammad comes 100% correct for their debut, producing straight classics ensuring a strong foundation for Q Tip & Phife Dawg to work with. Yes, and you can bet that both MC's hit you with the non-stop hypnotizing, conscious & creative lyrics throughout. Personally, the only track that does not have as much replay value as the rest is "Ham & Eggs", but then again the concept of this song isn't meant to be dead serious so it's down to taste. Now, if you are a fan of the tribe/early 90's hiphop/Jazzy & Conscious Hiphop then this is for you. Cop this asap! You NEED it. PEACE!
>>>BEST TRACKS, in my opinion, are; Push it along (Pure excellence), Luck of Lucien, Footprints, Can I Kick It & Youthful expression

Heavy Funk and big-time Soul.......2007-07-24
I couldn't tell if this was a good CD or not from the sample tracks. But man was I surprised when I cranked this up on a 300 mile drive to New York last week! The range and genre changes (raggie,disco,jazz/r&b) is amazing. My favorite is "Sex God". It's a real "come-and-get-me" song that N'Dea Davenport pulls off at her sultry best! Got to see them at the Capitol Jazz festival in June. TBNH turned the joint out and in the rain no less!
wow, tough crowd.......2007-04-02
boy, i don't get some of these reviews at all. this cd is amazing! every track is a mini-masterpiece, and n'dea has never sounded better. i am particularly enamored with the track, "I've Been Touched," which starts out sweetly low-key but steadily builds into a good old jam. if you've ever been a fan of The Brand New Heavies, you can't go wrong with this disc.
A Blast From The Past.......2007-03-29
Like one of the previous reviewers added: this is a real group playing real instruments. This CD is a wholesome change from whats out there now musically. They bring back that natural funk flavor. Out of the 12 songs 9 are really solid (1,2,3,6,7,8,9,11,12). My favorites were "Get used to it" no.3 & "We won't stop" no.6. The 8th joint takes a thinly veiled shot at the techno enhanced music of the day. On the 7th cut they actually mention how they were attempting to bring funk back into music. N'dea returned with superb vocals after a long hiatus. She put icing on the cake, and she's still as seductive as ever.
Brand New?.......2007-03-11
I first saw them on BET Jazz--singing one song and fell in love with them. I like this cd a lot!
