Heavy

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Even among rap fans, Heavy D has been considered innocuous. He's a bit reminiscent of Will Smith; any nastiness he exudes is eaten up by his goofy demeanor. The overweight lover is back with more of his bumpin' sex grooves, but is it streetwise? That's a different story. Rap has always prided itself on its edge and even a so-called "novelty" like Eminem has the groove smarts to match his persona. There's something about Heavy D that just doesn't cut deep enough. Q-Tip (of Tribe Called Quest) pops up on a track and the moment he says, "Yo," you ignore the lackluster backing; he commands the mic while D seems to disappear into the mix. There is one track ("You Know") that deserves a listen for its skillfully smooth merging of rap with drum & bass sounds. --Jason Josephes

5 out of 5 stars I thought it would be good, but it's better.......2007-08-07

The best album maybee ever, in a draw with follow the leader. My favorite is probably the most poular song on the album, which is obviously, evolution. Screw you all of you haters. I've seen at least 10 people thinking the opposite of what i do. They are really screwed up.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious.......2007-08-07

This is easily the best album since Untouchables. Korn is always at their best when they don't try to sound like themselves and that is pretty much why Take A Look In The Mirror falls short. See You On The Other Side was a major improvement over that but this was much better than even that. If you're a fan of their more mainstream works such as Follow The Leader you may not find what you're looking for here look somewhere else because thats not what Korn is about anymore. If you want something new and interesting then this is where its at. It's almost a direct descendent of Untouchables and SYOTOS but it has a crazy energetic undercurrent kind of like Life Is Peachy. This album sounds less like Korn than Untouchables (which up until now was their most out there sounding album) but its an expansion of their sound. It might not hit you right away. It goes down sort of like Jager but when it hits its all good.

3 out of 5 stars More of the Same, and That's OK.......2007-08-07

Korn plays it safe with 'Untitled.' The songs, the rifs, the choruses, are nothing we haven't heard before. Even the bagpipe intro on the 'I Will Protect You' made me wonder if I was listening to an older album. The band can easily be criticized for not expanding their horizons or taking more chances at this point in its career (although I will criticize it for not naming the album. That's just lazy). But does that make the album bad? Hardly.
'Evolution' goes into the best of Korn playlist on the Ipod. 'Kiss' and 'Hold on' will never get skipped on the song shuffle. The rest is music-to-listen-to on occasion.
It's not bad, it's just a lot less than I expected. Korn isn't under any pressure to release an album every year (or in this case, two, including the Unplugged one). Take your time, Jonathan, and next time put out something that will blow us away.

4 out of 5 stars I Like It I Like it..........2007-08-05

Hints of the past and going into the future. Have always liked Korn from the start.Always taking risks and going in differnet directions. That is cool with me.Hope it is cool with you. Many real cool songs here, that will not bore. Starting Over,Bitch We Got a Problem,Evolution,Hold On,Ever Be,Innocent Bystander and Killing are the standouts.Patented rockers and slower gloom songs from the guys. "Ever Be" could be the real sleeper here.Slow and mysterious. Some songs were penned by Terry Bozzio before he left. If you have been a fan of Korn from the beggining and didn't give up on them,I recommend this highly.Even for those who gave up after a particular album or so.I give it a strong 4.Haven't listened enough to go higher, but am sure in time will raise the stars..No "Head" or David Silveria for this one,but real good and they stay true to form.

5 out of 5 stars From one Freak to another..........2007-08-05

I honestly cannot get enough of this disk! Obviously, as a Korn fan I am horribly biased in their favor. But I do honestly believe that the quality of the songs and the maturity of the lyrics has improved. On most Korn discs, by 3 months later I skip half the songs and just listen to my faves. But on this, I just skip one (Bitch we got a problem). The intro track is a bit forced. Felt more like SYOTOS since that had intro and interlude tracks.

I was pleasantly surprised by Jon's falsettos and his entire range of his voice on this record. He's a talented singer, and his hard work has been paying off. He even did some drumming on a lot of the tracks on "Untitled." I also felt that a majority of the songs delt with either his near death last year due to a blood disorder or Head leaving the band in 2005. Just about every song mentions God in some context (or going to Hell). ON SYOTOS, I felt more of his lyrics were sexual than anything.

So in conclusion, if you are a korn fan than you'll like this album. If you have never listened to Korn before, this is a good album to pick to be introduced to their range in songwriting. If you stopped liking Korn after "Untouchables," you should give them another chance with this record. If you hate Korn, you probably will continue to hate them. And you know what, that's ok. They do not need to prove themselves to anyone at this point in their 15yr career!!

5 out of 5 stars Sorry about the D-bag, GREAT record!.......2007-08-07

Fantastic as always, you guys have been innovative from the start in 91, and I have been with you every step of the way, every one of you, well, except until now. I have to address the total D-bag move of Brian Head releasing his book when you dropped your new album to capitalize on the look up reference. If he does not need the money, then why take such a capitalist stance with the release of his book? What next, "Hallelujah with Head, the Sequel" the next time you guys drop a record? I hate him now, and I really didn't want to. Jon, I have always seen you as a kindred spirit, so I hope you know that we are'nt ALL drinking the KOOLAID. Keep it Krunk with Korn.

4 out of 5 stars Korn fans beware!.......2007-08-03

This is not the normal korn stile of music!

This is a more melodic stile not that different from the later tracks on See You On the Other Side, but sadly there is no heavy song on this CD

Personally I like this side of korn, but those of you who think that "Korn" and "Untouchables" were the best, will be dissappointed if you are expecting another head bashing scream happy CD

Hopefully this will help you before buying.

5 out of 5 stars It's experimental. It's weird. And it's GREAT!.......2007-08-03

I've always favored KoRn's more experimental music over their aggressive, but in the right combination, like on UNTOUCHABLES and TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR, it works quite well. Now I can add this untitled release (really, is it OFFICIALLY called "untitled?") to the above sentence.

Otherworldly effects, strange beats and melodies, more singing and less gibberish - yet underlying it all, a sound that is undeniably KoRn. Much like the warped creatures and beings which haunt the artwork accompanying this album (take THAT, downloaders!), this album is still recognizeable as the KoRn that we "later stuff" lovers have always worshipped.

Fans of "their old stuff" might not like this, but then such people are probably too close-minded to see the doughnut surrounding the hole. This is KoRn at their most experimental to date, and it is a fine release indeed.

4 out of 5 stars The Evolution Of Korn.......2007-08-03

There could be many reasons why Korn left their eight studio album untitled. Could it be that they were short on time and wanted to get this thing out as quickly as possible? Is it supposed to mark a new beginning, with only three original members left and a slew of session musicians rounding out the line-up? Or could it just be due to the fact that "Untitled" is Korn's most ambiguous and experimental album to date? I'll go with the third.

So what's Korn up to this year? Why are they rushing an album out with yet another band member (this time around, it's drummer David Silveria) taken out of the equation? Well, even if it probably was too soon for a new Korn album, it can't be denied that what they have laid down is easily home to the best material they have done since the turn of the century. At some point, we're all going to have to come to terms with the fact that Korn sort of lost it years ago. The delivery by frontman Jonathan Davis has felt forced for quite some years, and the band has either had a fair share of botched experiments or has just been going through the motions. Granted, "Untouchables," "Take A Look In The Mirror" and "See You On The Other Side" are all fine albums, but each fell short of expectations and only assisted in making the band look tired and out of date. With only three members left, who would have guessed they would have turned this thing around? Inviting touring keyboardist Zac Baird into the recording studio, and jamming with the legendary Terry Bozzio and Brooks Wackerman (Bad Religion) on drums, what remains of Korn have turned out their most satisfying album since their creative and commercial pinnacle in the late 90's.

"Untitled" brings to mind the energy and experimentation of the breakthrough album, "Follow The Leader." What the listener expects to hear is completely shattered here. Witness "B----, We Got A Problem," the song "Twisted Transistor" should have been, easily the catchiest and most infectious Korn tune since "Got The Life." Producer Atticus Ross, who worked on the last album, has returned to help Korn beef up their electronic repoitre, and instead of sounding like re-heated Nine Inch Nails, like a good chunk of "See You On The Other Side" sounded, the experiments are more refined and sound more natural here. "Kiss" starts off rather minimally, going down a predictable route, until the three minute mark when the band digs into some late-Beatles psychedelia. Elsewhere, the band stretches it's genre and limitations, as on "Killing," perhaps the thrashiest Korn song ever, and featuring a death metal inspired bridge, without sounding cheesy or forced. Along with experimentation, we are treated to Jonathan's most honest and emotional delivery in a long time. "Starting Over" and "I Will Protect You" (arguably the best song on the album, which truly shows off the work of Bozzio) both revolve around Jonathan's new obsession with death and leaving his loved ones behind, and it's a powerful message that goes beyond the usual angsty fodder of Korn's past, as something everyone can relate to.

Now, to be honest and fair, this is not a perfect album. Had they shortened it down to only ten songs and left off what didn't work, they'd have yielded better results. "Do What They Say" and "Innocent Bystander" are two songs that just don't work and only serve to slow down the progression of the album. What could have been two of the best songs on the album -- "Ever Be" and "Love & Luxury" -- are marred by their tired lyrical content, focusing on ex-guitarist Brian "Head" Welch and his beliefs. This is really something they should have gotten out of their system on "See You On The Other Side," and only makes it seem like they are running out of ideas and things to say. Regardless of the few flaws, it's still one of the most dynamic and intriguing entries in the Korn catalogue. Korn purists might find it difficult to swallow, but the fan who wants more from their band might walk away happy. It's just too bad that they couldn't work it out with Terry Bozzio, who really pushes this album to the level it's at. More Korn & Bozzio would be a great thing. If you're picking up the deluxe edition, you'll get a DVD that documents the making of the album quite well, and shows off just how insane Bozzio's methods are, and gives a bit of insight into the why's and how's of the album. Also, you get a coupon for a free shirt, a fold-out poster, and individual cards featuring high concept art of Jonathan, Munky and Fieldy. Aside from the DVD, it's all really just fluff, but it's worth it for the glimpse inside the studio for this one.

Latin for "common era," Era Vulgaris holds a pair of common threads with the four Queens of the Stone Age records that preceded it. One, it crosses colossal guitar chords with the most volatile of hard rock melodies. And second, it's as LOUD as loud gets, thanks to Josh Homme, the impatient instigator behind the ever-evolving cast of personalities that make up the band. Detonation comes with track one, as the jagged riffs of "Turning on the Screw" lead the listener into "Sick, Sick, Sick," where Julian Casablancas spews his vocals beneath a wall of multi-guitar catcalls. Although the head Stroke will likely garner the most attention, perpetual Queener Mark Lanegan's velvety pipes earmark two of Era's most booming selections: the funky "Make It Wit Chu" (complete with Temptations-like backing vocals) and the heart-racing three minutes of "River in the Road." Add the garage rock of Homme's "3's & 7's" and "Suture Up Your Future," easy pickings for most likely crossover hit, and Era Vulgaris-- hypnotically and explosively common--holds its own with any in the QoTSA discography. --Scott Holter

4 out of 5 stars Era Vulgaris.......2007-07-29

Like most of their albums it took a few listens for me to fully enjoy it. Now this isnt their best effort but its still good. It just didnt hit as hard as their other albums did. It reminds me of Lullabies just because of the fact that it took awhile for me to get into it. If you have never listened to them then I suggest Songs for the Deaf, Rated R, or their Self-titled before this one. If you have those then Id say buy this.

5 out of 5 stars Different style but still awesome.......2007-07-28

This CD is awesome, as are all QOTSA cds, but definitely different. I can't believe it is getting bad reviews because it is a different style, just give it a chance, it takes a few listens to get used to it, but it gets better with each listen. People apparently just wanted this cd to sound exactly like earlier QOTSA releases, but that's one thing I love about QOTSA, is the fact that all the CDs sound different.

So just give it a chance, listen to it more than one time before you decide you hate it. I love this CD, and if you're a QOTSA fan, you probably will too.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-07-26

Queens of the Stone Age is nothing if not consistent when it comes to their musical style (their lineup is a different story all together). From the minute that "Era Vulgaris" kicks in, you know what you're in for, and you get it in spades. Incredibly catchy, somewhat gritty quality, and a just plain groovy mood that gets orchestrated throughout the album's eleven tracks. Witness opener "Turnin' on the Screw" which bleeds into rip-roarers like "Sick, Sick, Sick", "Misfit Love", "Make It Wit Chu", "3's & 7's", the instantly memorable and catchy "Suture Up Your Future", and the excellent closer "Run, Pig, Run". There's not really anything here on "Era Vulgaris" that you haven't heard before from Josh Homme and co., but if you're a longtime fan of the band, this isn't a bad thing one bit. As far as providing more than solid and inventive rock, "Era Vulgaris" delivers in all departments, and is yet again another wonderful entry in what is a very impressive and underrated discography. All in all, whether you're a Queens of the Stone Age fan new or old, "Era Vulgaris" won't disappoint.

2 out of 5 stars Queens of the Stone Age.......2007-07-24

The cd sucked so bad. I can't believe they even put this out. It is no lullaby!!!

2 out of 5 stars A New Era For Queens.......2007-07-21

I've listened to the cd 5 full times and these boys are all over the map.
The biggest thing lacking is the drive on all but one song (sick, sick, sick). The rest is a jumble of misc. garbage. Not worth the price or time and makes lullabies sound like a 5 star album. Maybe the loss of Nick Oliveri is catching up with the band in the song writing department on the second release since his firing.

Amazon.com essential recording

Most critics complain Back in Black, the album AC/DC recorded after the death of their original lead screamer Bon Scott, is ridiculously juvenile, obvious, snickering, bludgeoning, derivative, single-minded about sex and booze, a big cartoon. All true, of course, and--on rock 'n' ragers like "What Do You Do For Money Honey," "You Shook Me All Night Long," and the title track--all great. As Scott's replacement Brian Johnson reminds us, loud and crunchy, no-holds-barred "rock and roll ain't noise pollution...it makes good, good sense." Never trust anyone who refuses to drink domestic beer, laugh at the Three Stooges, or crank Back in Black. --David Cantwell

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This album defines great Rock 'N' Roll music........2007-07-30

In my opinion this album is the greatest Rock 'N' Roll album ever. I strongly recommend you to buy this if your a rock fan, it is a must have. On another note I read some of the 1 star reviews and I urge you to disregard what they have to say for a few reasons. One reason is they put some false facts in their reviews (not all but a few) which clearly shows their lack of knowledge concerning this great rock band. Also I saw some of their other reviews for other cds. They gave 4-5 stars for bands like greenday and I think Beyonce (some crap like that)though their were a few who gave great bands like Metallica 4-5 stars. One more thing is that AC/DC makes great rock music, think about it. Its powerful yet simple and usually about the definitive rock 'N' Roll topics which are women/sex, alcohol, and good times. The songs of Back In Black are great rock songs which many people love, from credible rock/metal musicians to the average person.

5 out of 5 stars Dollars and (common) cents........2007-07-20

I'm going to rate this CD based on a $1 per song cost to total cost for the entire CD (Apple and Rhapsody charge $1 per song). Unfortunately, iTunes doesn't carry any AC/DC songs at the moment.
This CD is perfectly priced. 10 great songs for $10. If you don't already own the CD, the popular songs you'll know are Hells Bells, Back In Black and You Shook Me All Night Long. If you like them, then the rest of the songs on this CD won't take long to grow on you. Especially, Let Me Put My Love Into You. I promise that this CD will not disappoint.
This is one of my three favorite Hard Rock/Heavy Metal albums from the early 1980's. The other two are Judas Priest's "Screaming For Vengeance" and Def Leppard's "Pyromania".
Hope this helps.

5 out of 5 stars Simply put, THIS is rock and roll!.......2007-07-11

I can't really think of anything too specific to say about "Back in Black". One day, I bought the album, listened to it and had one of the biggest musical joyrides I can recall! Critics may despise AC/DC, but that's no reason to neglect this album! In fact, this qualifies not only as being one of the biggest-selling rock albums of all time, but one of the greatest. That being said, "Back in Black" is probably the first album people will think about whenever AC/DC is mentioned, and while they have a great selection in their catalogue, this is, no doubt, their finest hour.
From the guitar crunch of the Young brothers, from Malcolm's rock-solid rhythm playing to Angus's legendary riffs, licks and solos, this no doubt qualifies as a great guitar album. Then comes in the rhythm section of Cliff Williams on bass and Phil Rudd on drums, and while Phil Rudd may not have the same chops as John Bonham, Phil still makes his drums sound larger than life, which makes for a great cornerstone of the AC/DC groove. And then...Brian Johnson. Who would have thought after such a great lead singer as Bon Scott passed away, Brian Johnson would be able to fill in his role, and fill it in greatly, as well. His voice may take some getting used to, but he definitely sounds best on this album.
In addition, the remastering is excellent. The volume is up and there's no static or unneccesary noise that ruins the sound. After all, there's nothing as disappointing as hearing a great song like it was recorded a mile away! Anyway, this album is just flat-out excellent for those who dig such a sound. Ten songs at a little over forty minutes, and a cross between a hard-rock crunch and an old-school groove for each song, AC/DC did just about everything they could right on this album.
As a summary, this album will make you forget your problems, imagine these guys on stage at night in a big, sold-out arena, playing these rockers loudly and proudly, and, of course, prove to be a testament of time and rock and roll. And remember, take no pressure from the critics. Be your own person! Rock out and feel good about it! And remember, "rock and roll ain't noise pollution...it just makes good, good sense!" Peace!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best CDs ever...REMASTERED.......2007-06-27

I owned an original copy of Back in Black and played it constantly. It's an ideal CD for road trips and just incredible rock from beginning to end. I didn't think anything could possibly improve it until I heard the remastered version. Suddenly the bass comes out more, the drums are even more in your face, the vocals are clearer, it just ROCKS even more. There are plenty of bad remasters out there of various classic albums, but thankfully, this is not one of them.

5 out of 5 stars The rebirth of AC/DC .......2007-05-16

Hands down the best AC/DC CD. This is the cream of the crop, and it doesn't get any better than this. To this day, each song rocks loud and hard, and vocalist Brian Johnson was never better. A must for any hard rock collection, your ears will be bleeding.

Also known as the "rune" album or Zoso because of the medieval symbols adorning the inner sleeve, Led Zeppelin's fourth album, released in 1971, turned them from mere superstars into giant behemoths of the rock world. On tracks like "Black Dog," "Misty Mountain Hop," and "Rock and Roll," the combination of Robert Plant's banshee wails and Jimmy Page's frenetic guitar playing forever altered the stylistic bent of hard rock music. And the foreboding "When the Levee Breaks" demonstrated that Zeppelin could indeed play the blues fairly straight if they so desired. Still, everything here ultimately took a back seat to the album's (and, ultimately, the band's) magnum opus--the expertly constructed and deftly executed classic, "Stairway to Heaven." --Billy Altman

Jimmy Page was a top London studio guitarist before he got rich and famous as the musical leader of Led Zeppelin. The group's fourth--and arguably their finest--album is as much a tribute to his technique as a monument to his versatility. Page produced the album, co-wrote all eight songs, and played mandolin as well as all the guitars. Musically, this 1971 disc ranges from acoustic English folke ("Goin' to California" and "The Battle of Evermore," the latter featuring the late Fairport Convention frontwoman Sandy Denny) to bone-crushing, bluesy riff-slinging. On the album's centerpiece, "Stairway to Heaven," these light and dark strains are dramatically intertwined. The chiming "Four Sticks" aside, it's the Little Richard-inspired "Rock and Roll" and the tricky time changes--a Zeppelin trademark--of the fast-and-furious "Black Dog" that elevate this album into more than just a bustle in aspiring guitarists' hedgerows. --Don Waller

5 out of 5 stars The Battle of Evermore...........2007-08-06

Let's hear it for The Battle of Evermore, one of many underrated songs by Led Zeppelin. That song is beautiful, and everyone skips over it. Stop that!

Oh, and the other songs are good, too....

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-08-03

Led Zeppelin have always been my favorite band and also the best live show I saw, and this album is flawless. Sexy, hard rocking, soulful, bluesy, mystical, otherworldly, timeless...all wrapped up into one glorious album.

5 out of 5 stars LED ZEPPELIN IV : CLASSIC ROCK IN ALL IT'S GLORY !.......2007-08-01

Led Zeppelin IV, with it's rock opus Stairway To Heaven, secured the band's status as rock gods when it was released in 1971, and still remains the third best-selling album of all time. The songs are all staples on today's classic-rock radio, and they're all still very much a part of people's lives. Just yesterday, I saw someone wearing a t-shirt with the ZOSO album cover image on the front of it. Musically, Led Zeppelin IV offers a variety of heavy-metal, blues, acoustic music, and rock n' roll. The album opens with the enthusiastic and lusty Black Dog. With Robert Plant scream-singing sensuous lyrics and Jimmy Page playing a wicked-fast guitar riff, the song is a classic. It's followed by another classic, Rock And Roll. With lyrics reminicent of 1950s era rock n' roll, and a heavier, electric, and updated version of that genre, the song definitely lives up to it's title. The Battle Of Evermore is an acoustic mandolin dominated, medievil fantasy that has an otherworldly aura. It's followed by the legendary Stairway To Heaven, and of course, it's one of the greatest songs in the history of rock music, and it carries significant weight on this album. Beginning with only an acoustic guitar and flute, it deliberately and skillfully builds through several tempo changes and melodies untill it reaches the heights of screaming heavy-metal brilliance. The mood of the song is reflective and hopeful, and it strikes a chord in people's hearts and thoughts every time they hear it. It was was destined to become the legend that it is and will always be. Misty Mountain Hop and Four Sticks both include inventive guitar, interesting lyrics, and they rock with unrelenting beats. The acoustic and mellow Going To California adds variety and a change of pace. The album closes with another classic, When The Levee Breaks, a heavy-metal-meets-the-blues celebration of intense expression. John Bonham's powerful, and as always, excellant drums are highlighted on this one, and the song closes this classic album perfectly. Led Zeppelin IV is most definitely a classic rock legend. It will be an indelible part of our lives and rock music forever, and year after year after year, Stairway To Heaven will be named the The Number One Song Of All-Time on classic-rock radio stations all over the world.

5 out of 5 stars The Essence of Rock and Roll.......2007-07-07

The original and definitive heavy metal band, Led Zeppelin made their mark in several other categories with their fourth album. The vocals of Robert Plant, guitar playing of Jimmy Page, and drumming of John Bonham are all the stuff of legend. John Paul Jones brings extra versatility and originality on bass, keyboard AND acoustic guitar. The songs:

Black Dog - blues-influenced (like a lot of earlier Zeppelin), loud and raunchy (in the best kind of way), some over-the-top vocal stylings
Rock And Roll - barn-burning blues and a great vehicle to show off one of the greatest rock drummers ever
The Battle Of Evermore - inventive art rock that proved that these guys were not only great rockers, but great artists as well
Stairway To Heaven - the definitive power ballad
Misty Mountain Hop - more barn-burning blues with monstrously huge guitar sounds and distinctive electric piano riff
Four Sticks - raucous art rock, using a crazy time signature and chord voicing that few bands other than Rush and Jethro Tull would dare to touch
Going To California - yes, they can do acoustic folk rock better than anyone else too
When The Levee Breaks - more rowdy blues, this time with some gritty harmonica to give it a different vibe

The production and engineering behind this album are the icing on the cake. Recording students are still studying and copying this stuff and trying to reproduce the "Bonham drum sound" to this day. The generous echoes and overdubs on Plant's vocals somehow never seem overdone or dated.

This is the amazing work of an amazing team of players and recording experts on their best days ever. Rock fans should be intimately familiar with this timeless and hugely influential CD.

5 out of 5 stars brings back memories........2007-06-20

i know that a lot of people claim to have gone to the original woodstock concert, but i really did. and of all the great bands who played there, this was the best. i will never forget their great set. the lead singer and guitarist was a black man who played his guitar left-handed. the best song they played there was a great, great song about somebody named Purple Hayes, who could get into your mind. i think the title of the song was "Purple Hayes." unfortunately i have never been able to find that song on an album, but this album is great anyway. i just discovered it, and it is full of great songs. there is one song here called "Stairway to Heaven," which is about a stairway that goes up to Heaven. cool. and there is other neat stuff, too. get this record. you should. and if anyone knows what album "Purple Hayes" is on, please please please let me know.

5 out of 5 stars Systematic Greatness.......2007-08-06

I will be honest, when I first listened to Dream Theater's new album I didn't got it, I simply didn't like as much as I always do I just didn't dig it, I listened the first 3 songs and stop it it was difficult because I was expecting something more like octavarium (which I really love) but it was so different..... after 15 years of being a Dream Theater fan I could not believe I did not dig the new album, so 2 days later I knew I must give another chance this time I would listen to it without specting some sound or something specyfic I was just there lying on the couch listening to Systematic Chaos as if I have never listen to it and happily things started to change man something happened I was blowned away by the album I listened from start to finish then without delay watched the DVD version and upload the whole album into my IPOD and since that very date (about a month or so) I just keep playing and playing Systematic Chaos without stop and every time there is something new, something better I don't know I simply love this album, every aspect of it, once again DT gives us one helluva album

Systematic Chaos brings everything DT is, you will get prog songs, slow songs, metal right into your face songs, epic moments, man you get everything you want to listen and so much more (special version of the album is a must)

From start to finish Systematic Chaos is an amazing experience due to all the elements that are perfectly mixed.... the intro on the opening track, "In the prescence of the enemies pt.1" is really one of the most amazing intros DT has offered the whole sound is fantastic... "Repentance" with all the dialogues (so different in DT catalogue) or "Ministry of lost souls" with all that feeling through all the song absolutely amazing, I just simply keep going on but it will be better if you give it a try.

As we already read on other reviews everyone is complaining about Mike's singing and ok he is not a great singer and maybe not a good backup singer but he got guts, energy and the attitude to sing the way he does and man it does not sound that bad I really like it..... sorry man how can I give a complaint when I really love this album and every one DT release, seems I am not that objective at times...

As I have stated on my other DT reviews every DT album is so different one from the other, but everyone is so great, so brilliant and deserves not to be compared and Systematic Chaos its not an exception, 8 songs on the album and everyone is very different from the other, obviously you can listen to references of recent DT albums like Octavarium, Six degrees or ToT, but that is why every DT album is that great they have the older or classic sound but at the same time the songs are so different that became instant classics... once again if you want metal listen to ToT, if you want epic listen to Scenes or Six degrees but if you want all those sounds mixed at the same time I really believe you must listen to Systematic Chaos, this is the album in which DT gave us everything they are, not completely metal or totally prog, but the perfect mixture of Dream Theater's sound, but again so new and different than the previous albums, that the only thing you can do is enjoy and love the entire album.

I always say that every DT album is the best maybe because its new stuff but that is the truth every one is the best when they are released so now it is time to see the test of time to know how good this album really is... I had always said Images & Scenes are the best albums on DT catalogue and I will defend that always but it is getting harder and harder to do so because Dream Theater keeps releasing impressive albums, obviously that is why I love Dream Theater music, they challenge themselves on every album and so they challenge the fans... for me this is the first time that a DT album took so long to dig on me but believe me it really worth the time I invest listening all day long... Systematic is DT's new masterpiece.

It will be easy to say that my favorite tracks are In the prescence of the Enemies pt.1, Prophets of War and Forsaken, because those were the first songs I really dig but being honest at this point every song on the album is a favorite.

I must mention James's vocals they are outstanding it seems like he is getting better with age, I love what he did on Octavarium, Images or Scenes but in Systematic Chaos he gave impressive vocals so different that any he has performed I really love the way he sang on the slower songs, the faster songs even though those parts where Mike is singing too, I think they are perfectly balanced... what can I say about John, Jordan, John & Mike they are the kings and it is stated on every album or every live performance, for me Dream Theater is the perfect machine an it is just getting better and better.

By the way no matter the impressive albums other amazing bands release as Symphony X, Threshold, Silent Force, Rhapsody, Pain of Salvation (bands that I really really love) Dream Theater answers with a better album, this time Systematic Chaos, as if they were trying to prove who are the kings of progressive rock.. after 20 and more years is there still any doubt about it???

I am really looking forward to see if they will come on tour here to Mexico I would love to listen Systematic Chaos live¡¡¡

By the way DT fans do not wait any longer and order your copy of Dream Theater book sounds it will be fantastic¡¡

5 out of 5 stars Still Dream Theater in the deep.......2007-08-03

First, I am a devoted fan of the band so I may not be as much impartial as I would want to. Still, I think that it is a very good album. Like I read from other review, it is what "Train of Thought" should have been. It is different from other Dream theater albums and definitevely more heavier, but it keeps that prog vibe on the deep. Particularly, I prefer the more prog-melodic style of "Images and Words" and "Scenes From a Memory" and I hope the next album to be a "Metropolis part III", but I still think that "Systematic Chaos" is a very well developed album.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Like As Much As The Last 2, But Still AWESOME!!!!.......2007-07-29

This band still rules!! Just saw them in San Diego on the first nite of the tour.(July 24, 2007) They played every song on this CD. Great stuff!!
I bought the CD that comes with the Bonus DVD. It has all behind the scenes at the recording of this CD. Pretty cool stuff. Portnoy is funny, with his Ali G impersonations. This is a great CD!! A must for all Dream Theater fans.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible musicians !.......2007-07-29

This new release of the band is a clear demonstration of how talented these guys are. The music is powerful and the vocals are also great.
I am please to own this one. Very hot !

5 out of 5 stars A Magnum Opus after 20 years of Prog-Metal.......2007-07-26

I have been following DT since 1994 when I was introduced by a friend who played Images and Words in a car ride home from school. That was 13 years ago and DT remains the only band I simply do not get tired of listening to.

They were formed in 1985 and here we stand in the year 2007 and 10 studio albums later with Systematic Chaos which I think is arguably their finest work to date.

Some of their previous releases took a little time invested listening for the tracks to grow on me. They always did and I always grew to love the music. Systematic Chaos stands out for me as a DT album which I LOVED on first listening. I mean I think I nearly blew the speakers out in my house the first time The Dark Eternal Night started piping through my system.

Some standout tracks on Systematic Chaos:

In the Presence of Enemies - Part 1: First track on the album and a great opener for DT as it has a very progressive feel to it with a complicated riff that they play with in several different forms leading up to James LaBrie cutting into vocals at 5:13. For some reason, 'clean and crisp progressive metal' comes to mind when thinking about this track.

Forsaken - Opens with a creepy sounding piano sequence from Jordan Rudess which would find itself at home in a movie like "The Exorcist" and then explodes with the rest of the band playing a variation of that theme. The lyrics are very creative and spell a story of a person being visited at night by a 'forsaken' who tempts the victim to give themselves up. This song has a more ballad type feel and you are tempted to sing along with this one.

The Dark Eternal Night - If In the Presence of Enemies is clean and crisp, then this song is its antithesis sounding grungy and ballsy. It starts with John Petrucci on a seven string guitar playing a filthy riff. The vocals cut in at 1:11 with LaBrie and Portnoy together distorted and angry. This is a song where your volume knob has a mind of its own and speaker companies may make some money in replacement parts. This wouldn't be out of place on a Megadeth album and I think DT may find some new fans with this tune.

A note on the 5.1 mix on the bonus DVD...this isn't just the music cloned on the surround and center speakers. The music has actually been mixed. You will hear panning and splitting of vocals and instruments. The bonus DVD is well worth having if you are fortunate enough to have a surround system.

The documentary on the DVD is the only thing I wasn't entirely happy with. While it was cool to see how the songs take shape, there were a few things that bothered me. For one, if you watch this with a good sounding subwoofer, be ready to turn it down during the interviews with John Petrucci as they were done in a very windy alley and subwoofers will lovingly reproduce all that wind making the interview almost impossible to sit through. The second thing is a bit nitpicky, but I feel they should have future proofed the documentary a little better by filming it in a 16:9 aspect ratio. Widescreen TVs will be ubiquitous in the near future as prices continue to tumble. It would have been nice not having to watch it in pillar box format on my tv.

Most bands don't last 20 years. If they do, they are tired sounding and probably ready to hang it up. DT is in their prime after 2 decades, and if they continue to make albums like this, the fans will respond with good album sales and sold out shows. I hope to see a 30th anniversary tour in the future.

If you are new to DT I can't think of a better way to start than picking up Systematic Chaos

Album Description

Four years since his last studio album, and following up on his highest charting radio single ever ("Personal Jesus", from Lest We Forget), Marilyn Manson returns with "Eat Me, Drink me". Art openings, soundtrack appearances, and personal circumstance have grabbed headlines for Manson in recent months, setting the stage for the release of Eat Me, Drink Me, which is unquestionably the artist's most personal statement yet. Always the provocateur, in what may be the ultimate subversion of the code of aggro-rock, the songs are immediately catchy - all jagged guitar hooks, anthemic choruses, with an overlying glam-rock sheen. Lyrically Manson has never been more riveting, seemingly having enough to draw from in his own life and from society at large to present a fresh, snarling vision.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The Album's Musical Theme.......2007-08-06

I've been thinking this over for a while now. I won't bore you with the obvious: Manson changes his musical style every...yaddah, yaddah, yaddah. So what is the aesthetic theme behind this record?

After successive listens, it dawned on me that this album reads like a Psychedelic bluesy vampiric Spaghetti Western meets Alice in Wonderland filled with large flickering neon signs (probably of crucifixes above churches) littering the landscape. I get the sense he now fancies himself as a psychedelic Glam Rock outlaw cowboy roaming the dusty, desolate badlands of Hollywood, wrangling for himself (and subsequently breaking the hearts of) some dainty and not-so-dainty missus and ma'am's and harlots and young naive teenage actresses (which he is doing).

It certainly seems the case with songs like "Putting Holes in Happiness" and "Are you the Rabbit?". Even "They Said Hell's Not Hot" sounds like, dare I say it, 80's era Bon Jovi (Slippery When Wet?). There's also a very movie atmosphere running throughout this work and it wouldn't surprise me if the recent events of his life catalogued by this album began somewhere around the time he made a cameo in the vamp flick "Rise".

Anyway, these are just my $0.02 which I hope would aid in figuring out how to approach and define this album.

2 out of 5 stars Manson must be tired.......2007-08-03

this collection seems slower and darker than usual. After listening, I wondered if Manson was depressed over the recent breakup with his wife, and it was affecting his music's mood.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant.......2007-08-02

i love every song on here. the guitar work is amazing. its lyrically brutal and the man just knows how to write killer songs

3 out of 5 stars Not the Best, Not the Worst.......2007-08-02

I was a little disappointed by this CD. After all the hype from Manson himself proclaiming this was the great gothic vampire album and all, that's what I expected it to be. But it's not terribly gothic (most of his work isn't), and other than "If I Was Your Vampire" it isn't overly vampiric. Manson comes off sounding either bitter or commonly sleazy most of the time. In an untypical Manson move, he's said openly that "Mutilation Is the Most Sincere Form of Flattery" is aimed at My Chemical Romance, which helps make this feel like a personal "F*** You" album.

On "Are You the Rabbit" and "Eat Me, Drink Me," Manson breaks away somewhat from the air of griping and enters a more exploratory style; it's too bad we don't get to see him continue that exploration through the rest of the album. But even the bad songs stay in your head, especially the loose-stitched "Heart-Shaped Glasses." At least this CD proves that Manson hasn't fallen prey to stagnation; he's still very much in the process of evolving.

5 out of 5 stars Even the God of !@#$ can bleed........2007-08-01

I've been a Manson fan since way back in the Antichrist Superstar days. I really came to appreciate him when he followed up that album with Mechanical Animals. Rather than make Antichrist Superstar 2, he went in a completely different direction. Manson is essentially an artist who plays whatever he wants, and that is why I like him.

People whine that this album is "slow" as if Manson never has made slow depressing songs and was always a thrash metal band. I hear a lot of complaints from people who simply want Manson to be some anti right-wing anti religious for their sole amusement as if he is some monkey who should dance for their change.

Yeah, because rock n' roll is all about conforming to people's standards.

Manson was suicidal, got a divorce, was basically broken and bleeding. To fix his wounds he plugged an amp and a microphone into his scars and made one of the most interesting albums he's ever made. It's raw, it's experimental, it's depressing. Some people will hate this, their loss.

I was pretty disappointed with Golden Age of Grotesque (it was catchy but hollow) so my expectations were lowered. This album for me pretty much kicked my head in. It's the most emotionally haunting album since Mechanical Animals and he sounds even more vindictive and pissed off than he did with Holywood. Kudos to Tim Skold for creating such good guitar work which causes me to involuntarily air-guitar while listening to it.

Is it my favorite album of his? I would put Mechanical Animals and Holywood higher than this, they were a bit more cohesive thematically. This album isn't one where you can just pop it in any old time, but this is the album you can pop in when you are pissed off or depressed and love the hell out of it.

So in the end I am one of the Manson fans who actually gave this album a damn chance and liked it a lot. Manson has come back to school all these radio friendly manufactured-depression emo-screamo bands that whine about how "high school is oh so hard" what real down-and-dirty raw depressed experimental rock n' roll is all about.

Album Description

The masters of Symphonic Power Metal are back!

Symphony X are recognized by-and-large as one the most important acts in the worldwide metal scene. After the release of their hugely successful CD, The Odyssey - and after nearly five years - Michael Romeo and his band have returned with what is already being praised as their best work to date. Paradise Lost has all the trademarks that have come to be associated with Symphony X: Incredibly intricate and powerful, yet-melodic compositions that showcase every member's unrivaled technical skill as instrumentalists. However, once again it must be said that the spotlight is squarely on the ferocious vocal force of singer Russell Allen and the almost inhuman pyrotechnics of guitarist Michael Romeo.

The North American version of Paradise Lost features a fantastic foldout and diecut digipack that was designed by Warren Flanagan, who has done art-direction for major motion picture blockbusters such as I Robot, X-Men and Blade.

This is thee guitar release of the summer!

3 out of 5 stars "masterpiece" of power metal but certainly not prog metal.......2007-08-07

I felt a bit let down by it also in fact its the only Symph X CD I no longer own, I knew by the third play that I was not being entertained by it in the way Symph X can entertain me. Honestly I felt a bit shattered by it and to make matters worse many people are calling it a "masterpiece" maybe a "masterpiece" of power metal but certainly not prog.

4 out of 5 stars Symphony XS is back! .......2007-08-06

Finally, after 4 years, Symphony X is back. While it is not their best record, Paradise lost is well worth adding to your collection. Well written and produced, the sound is awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-08-05

I've been listening to it for about a week now and can't believe how good it is. It's beautifully produced and musically genius. It is definitely a harder sounding album that former albums, both in terms of the "crunch" guitar sound and the vocal edge. Notably, it's very tight without too many tangential interludes, yet it still keeps SX's tradition of odd meters, very clever transitions, great melodies, and epic and powerful vocalization. Like many of the best albums out there, this one seems to require a few listens to pick up on the subtle cues and amazing music - which is great because I know it will age like fine wine. You won't get bored of this one anytime soon, and you may find it's immediately your fav SX album. Two thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding! 5+ Stars.......2007-08-05

I opted to wait a bit before submitting my CD review. I like to give new music a few good listens to become acquainted with its contents. I recently attended the SymphonyX show in Portland. At the time I wasn't excited about Paradise Lost; probably because I was comparing it to older material. After seeing/hearing many of these songs performed live, I compiled my entire SX catalogue into an MP3 disc. After completing the entire disc while traveling on extended weekends, I realized just how incredibly powerful Paradise Lost is. Each song is full of precision and skilled musical craftsmanship.

This is without a doubt an outstanding group of songs by one of rock music's greatest musicians. From the opening moments of Oculus to the perfect Revelation, Paradise Lost should be considered a strong 2007 Grammy contender. Michael Romeo, Russell Allen, Jason Rullo, Michael Pinnella and Michael Lepond have created their most powerful release to date. Not a moment of fluff or filler here.

Trust me folks, there will never be another Symphony X. Enjoy them while you can. Newcomers to the band should enjoy everything from The Damnation Game forward.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! Symphony X Has Their Masterpiece.......2007-07-29

Russel Allen is without a doubt one of the most powerful singers of our times, and Michael Romeo is pure genius in how he has crafted this album and he slays on his guitar! Every song is great and their sound is more powerful than ever before. They are the best progressive metal act today and now officially blow Dream Theater away....

If time is the true test, then Guns N' Roses' Greatest Hits confirms that they really were one of the greatest rock & roll bands in the world. While, in retrospect, fellow graduates of the class of 1987 are about as cool as poodle perms and spandex, the L.A. bad boys still rock like gods. Listening to the sun-drenched chords of "Paradise City" and the ensuing stadium-sized swagger is enough to make wearing leather trousers and bandanas seem like a good idea. Of course, it helped that for them sex, drugs, and rock & roll was a way of life, not a fashion statement. As Axl Rose wails "I wanna watch you bleed" on "Welcome to the Jungle" like a chain-smoking lunatic possessed, it's hard not to believe he meant it. Yet equally, it was his surprisingly poetic nature that made genuinely touching love songs of "Patience" and "Sweet Child of Mine."

Though none of their subsequent albums matched the drug-crazed genius of Appetite for Destruction, they did, as the Greatest Hits reminds, have their moments. From the bloated Use Your Illusion I & II came ultimate rock ballads "Don't Cry" and "November Rain," along with the primal rage that was "You Could Be Mine." And while the covers of the The Spaghetti Incident? were largely forgettable, the fact that their final single was a seedy sneer through the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil" seems spectacularly fitting. --Dan Gennoe

Album Description

It may surprise some to realize that Guns N' Roses released only four full-length original albums, and two of those debuted simultaneously. But they were enough to forever change rock `n' roll. Even more shocking is that one of the great bands in rock history, with its last studio album issued 10 years ago, has never had a "best of" compilation. Now it has. Welcome to the jungle with Greatest Hits (Geffen), released March 23, 2004. With 14 selections housed in a digipak, Greatest Hits features all eight of the band's Top 40 Billboard Hot 100 tracks (five of them RIAA-certified "gold," i.e., sales of more than 500,000 units). Along with spanning the group's five album releases, Greatest Hits also marks the debut on a Guns N' Roses album of the band's cover of the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy For The Devil" for the 1995 film Interview With The Vampire.

3 out of 5 stars Buy the originals you'll thank me in the long run........2007-07-18

If you want the real deal from GNR just go out and get Appetite For Destruction.During the 80s there was GNR and Metallica two of the biggest bands in metal and if you know the legacy of Metallica you would sure understand that thats quit a feet to be alongside the most publicized metal band ever. if you like AFD then get the EP entitled lies which is a raw extension to AFD and then when your in the mood for something more toned down get both use your illusions cds. Sorry guys this album is mediocre at best and you can't cheat yourselves by getting a half hearted compilation go out and get AFD and Use Your Illusions 1 and 2.

3 out of 5 stars Okay, but please read!.......2007-06-17

I love GNR. They remain one of my favorite bands. They put so much feeling into their music and lyrics (even those that are about drugs and sex). This was the first GNR CD I bought, and at the time I was in love with them. Years later I was pushed by a friend to buy Appetite for Destruction. I said to him, "I already have their greatest hits." But he replies, "No you don't. Not really." So eventually I bought AFD, and I was blown away. It is one of the greatest albums ever written. It's absolutly astounding. I am shocked to see that this greatest hits collection only had three songs from AFD. I no longer listen to this collection. Songs like Nightrain, Mr. Brownstone, My Michelle, and Rocket Queen weren't included. They certainly are better than some of the Medicore songs on here like Yesterday, Since I don't have you, and Such Fun. How were they hits, they were cover songs that did little to elevate the bands success. Where's It's So Easy, Coma, Estranged, and Garden of Eden. (even their underrated songs just mentioned are better than some songs on this track). If you want GNR's best, buy Appetite for Destruction and Use your Illusion I & II. If you want one CD then just get AFD.

4 out of 5 stars Guns And Roses - A Decent Compliation.......2007-05-01

Talk about a band that had it all and pretty much threw it all away. Guns And Roses is the classic example of a band that came from nothing, hit the big time quickly, and then flushed it down the drain in a sea of drugs, alcohol, greed and general vice. The fact that they treated their fans like [...] did not help matters either. Showing up hours late at concerts or not showing up at all. Having hissy fits in the middle of shows and walking off the stage. It is really amazing to me these guys have maintained the audience that they have given the way their fans have been treated. This is a band that could have been the biggest hard rock band in the world, but basically blew it. Still, there is no denying that they produced some great rock n roll. The band really only put out 4 studio albums, so most people who are big fans of the band probably already have most of what is on this disc. As a compilation it is a decent collection. Naturally there is a lot of material from "Appetite For Destruction". The two "Use Your Illusion" albums are both well represented as well. My all time favorite G & R tune is probably "November Rain" which is here in all it's symphonic glory. Several covers are also here including Bob Dylan's "Knocking On Heaven's Door", Paul McCartney's "Live And Let Die", and The Rolling Stones "Sympathy For The Devil". All in all this is a decent collection if you just want to get the band's best known songs.

As it turned out, Led Zeppelin's infamous 1969 debut album was indicative of the decade to come--one that, fittingly, this band helped define with its decadently exaggerated, bowdlerized blues-rock. In shrieker Robert Plant, ex-Yardbird Jimmy Page found a vocalist who could match his guitar pyrotechnics, and the band pounded out its music with swaggering ferocity and Richter-scale-worthy volume. Pumping up blues classics such as Otis Rush's "I Can't Quit You Baby" and Howlin' Wolf's "How Many More Times" into near-cartoon parodies, the band also hinted at things to come with the manic "Communication Breakdown" and the lumbering set stopper "Dazed and Confused." --Billy Altman

5 out of 5 stars MASTERPIECE from 1968 that still holds extreme value!.......2007-07-31

They all clamber for the fourth album, the Zoso album, or they talk and they talk about this album or that album or yadda yadda yadda! Enough with the gibberish, the First album...this one, the self titled one, is the one to behold. Still phenomenal after all this time has passed...can you believe this album is nearly 40 years old? Just amazing, but what came after it is not what I am here to review, it is this album. Communication Breakdown bombs in and takes you for a pretty raw and fun ride! I won't go into detail but every song is a work of art when it comes to Rock and Roll. If you don't have this album you should, it is one of the best overall albums in Rock history next to the likes of Dark Side of the Moon and so on and so forth.

Jimmy Page is on guitar and with Plant at the mic, this thing was just the beginning...but even then it is such a superb album filled with soul, rock and roll, and metal. Long Live Led Zeppelin!

1 out of 5 stars Biggest ripoff in the history of music!.......2007-07-05

I understand I am about to anger many legions of Led Zeppelin fans. Unfortunately not all Zeppelin fans have done their homework as well as Page and Plant and company did for this album. Here they shamelessly steal from other artists' songs and put their names on them for songwriting credits!! Don't believe me? Well, here goes.

1) Good Times Bad Times-A great Zeppelin tune, hands down! Unfortunately it is the only one they truly wrote for this album.

2) Babe I'm Gonna leave You-Another great Zeppelin tune? Not quite. This is a dead ripoff of Joan Baez's version of an Ann Breden song of the same title. Check it out...same lyrics and music. How Zeppelin originally credited themselves for writing this song is despicable.

3) You Shook Me-A Credited Willie Dixon tune. However, if you listen to Jeff Beck's version on Truth, you will find shocking similarities.

4) Dazed and Confused- A Zeppelin warhorse if there ever was one. Too bad the song is a dead ripoff of Jake Holmes' song titled, of course, Dazed and Confused. Oh, it's just a title you say? Listen to Holmes' version and you will hear the same exact riff! When Page was with The Yardbirds, Holmes was an opening act and hence, Page's introduction to a song he would selfishly give himself credit for writing.

5) Your Time Is Gonna Come-Listen to the intro to this song and then listen to Traffic's Dear Mr. Fantasy and tell me if you don't see a similarity, or in fact, a carbon copy!

6) Black Mountain Side-This is laughable!! Bert Jansch wrote and performed a song titled..HAHA, Black Water Side. Interesting to note that the riffs are shockingly similar..And it makes me wonder...

7) Communication Breakdown-A rewrite of Eddie Cochran's Nervous Breakdown.

8) I Can't Quit You Baby-Another Willie Dixon cover which they appropriately give him credit for. A rarity on this release.

9) How Many More Times-What do you get when you combine a Howlin' Wolf cover of How Many More Years and Albert King's The Hunter? You get THIS song credited to Zeppelin as writers.

Don't believe me? If you can find the above mentioned songs I DARE you to play them back to back with the Zeppelin versions. Zeppelin proves, on this release anyway, that they were the greatest cover band in the history of music. I am sickened and disappointed. How sad that such great musicians can so obviously rip off other artists and not give them credit for these songs. Pathetic, actually.

Sadly, these are not the only songs in Zeppelin's catalogue that are partially or fully taken from other artists that Zeppelin shamelessy wears as their own. I also have references for Stairway to Heaven, Custard Pie, Whole Lotta Love, The Lemon Song, In My time Of Dying, When the Levee Breaks..etc..Yes, eventually Zep DID give SOME artists their just due...after being sued. You can argue and say Who Cares? These versions are great, and that may very well be. But the truth should be known and if you ARE going to listen to Zeppelin at least be aware of what has taken place. It's ok to cover someone else's song...IF YOU GIVE THEM PROPER CREDIT WITHOUT PASSING IT OFF AS YOUR OWN AND DECEIVING THE PUBLIC. As a music fan, I am insulted. Why do you think Zep sold all the rights to their songs to Atlantic Records? One word: Lawsuits!

These 'Gods' of rock are thieves and if you're serious about music and care anything about artistic integrity you should be at least a little bit angry at this deceitfulness. If you're not then either integrity means nothing to you OR you are as big a thief as Page and comp. were.

5 out of 5 stars Zeppelin's First.......2007-06-22

And in my opinion it is still the best.
Led Zeppelin I began the start of the world's most famous and most influential heavy bluesy folk rock band ever. Also Led Zep are cited as pioneers of heavy metal (although 1/3 of I's music was acoustic) just before Black Sabbath hit.
Advancing the sound of Cream, Led Zeppelin created a sound that was unique and one that was all their own back in 1969. Heck, Led Zeppelin advanced the boundaries of Rock 'n' Roll and inspired millions of others in their wake.
Besides The Beatles, Led Zeppelin was the first Rock band that I have ever heard and got into.
My Father used to shake the whole house while playing "Dazed and Confused" late at night, almost every night downstairs in our basement at that time. Slowly the song crept into my thoughts and introduced me to a whole "new" sound being only 9 or 10 years old.
I can still feel the vibrations under my feet from listening to that deep descending bassline that begans "Dazed and Confused". Still my favorite song on this, their debut.
"Good Times Bad Times" kicks this album off and early on in my childhood this was one of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs. It's just really catchy and upbeat & contains a swirling guitar effect set by Jimmy Page(one of the greatest guitarists ever).
"Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" is still one of the most beautiful and most memeorable acoustic tracks that I have ever heard - "I Can hear it Calling me..." - The song was inspired by Joan Baez's song from 1962.
Other favorites of mine include : "Communication Breakdown" and "How Many More Times" - which in the early days was also Led Zep's (The Hammer Of the Gods) closing number during concert tours.
Led Zeppelin's First will always be one of my All-Time Favorite albums and it also holds one of my fondest childhood memories.

5 out of 5 stars classic blues rock.......2007-06-17

You know, I think by this point, Zeppelin's first album is now my favorite. The following four albums have been played quite frequently through the years (yes, even Zeppelin III). The original has been played just as much (I won't deny that) but there's something about the first album that just stays with me through the years.

Maybe it's the fact that the production is amazing for 1969 standards. Seriously, how many albums back then were this loud? Maybe Tommy from the Who. I can't think of many others. Black Sabbath's debut was released a year later, so that doesn't count.

Anyway, I really like what Zeppelin was doing here. You have fairly lengthy and successful attempts at blues rock, with extraordinary jamming skills scattered throughout the album. Zeppelin was just not the same after this one. I especially love the drumming and the creepy bass work. Great album.

4 out of 5 stars It's a bird! It's a plane! It's... Led Zeppelin.......2007-05-12

Led Zeppelin I (1969) Led Zeppelin's first studio album.

Out of the ashes of the Yardbird's came rock's most skilled - if not most important - guitarist of all time. Jimmy Page, joining forces with Plant, Jones, and Bonham, formed what would become the definitive hard rock band. Not only did Led Zeppelin help define a new genre of rock, they explored every possible point. This album was the jumping point.

Let's cut to the chase; it don't matter how these four geniuses came together, the important thing is that they did. The music here is very good, several of which are classic rock radio staples. The opener "Good Times, Bad Times" is a relatively soft introduction to what the rest of the album had in store. The slow blues of "Dazed and Confused" and manic rush of "Communication Breakdown" as well as the great instrumental "Black Mountain Side" help to create with a single stroke Zeppelin's distinctive sound.

I own the original vinyl from 1969, and this transfer is wonderful. But it's expected; Page is so darn protective of his (or their) music that he wouldn't settle for a remaster that didn't sound excellent. This is one of the greater albums of all time, yet is not the finest in the Zeppelin catalog. Anyone who is looking to get into Zeppelin should not start here, though; "IV" is the best place to go first, followed by "II" and "Physical Graffiti".
