Dope or Dog Food [Explicit Lyrics]

In most other cities, Z-Man would be an anomaly of the most bugged proportions, but soon you realize that he's just a product of his Bay Area environment. E-40, Digital Underground, Illa-dapted, Del--they're all part of Z-Man's eclectic lineage. As he says on "Free Spirited," he's "fresh out the ghetto/I'm a living cartoon," and indeed, Z-Man bounces crazy, comedic lines off the wall like a Looney Tune. Armed with Moss's quirky funk-filled tracks, Z invents a lot of new slanguage and pops off with his alter ego Gingerbread Man. "White Girls Wit Ass" speaks for itself. His rhymes lurch and jump with a drunken rhythm, but his stinging punch lines let you know he's always in control. Z-Man's own Hieroglyphics family have long been the masters of unpredictable creativity in the hip-hop kingdom, and Z's setting out to be the new crown/clown prince. --Oliver Wang

5 out of 5 stars Come on and gurp wit' us!.......2005-04-03

A real hott album of 2004. You gotta peep this out not just if you're a fan of Hieroglyphics (how I got introduced to this though). I personally felt that album myself and I see he's got high creativity with a good flex of PURE QUALITY hip-hop depth like a hardcore 40.

Check out Anti-Nerd (that's the name right?) if you haen't checked out already, another of Z-Man's. Get your boogie on.

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite MC........2004-05-01

I'll keep it brief. I fell in love with Z-Man after hearing one track, "Z Mutiny". The intro song is also really great. All of it is just really enjoyable. Maybe not an album for everyone, due to its often drug, sex and more drug lyrical content. This is exactly why I loved this album. Few MC's have the guts to spit a line like "I need a new syringe, I need to lose some friends..." He's a lunatic, and it works. Z-Man, keep it up. A really fun album to listen to. I downloaded half of it, then bought it. See, downloading helps. Pass me the hen...

5 out of 5 stars ABOUT TIME.......2004-04-27

It's about time Z-man started exploding. "Dope or Dog Food" is Z-man's first album on a major record label, but he's been the San Francisco Bay Area's tightest underground rapper for years. His shows are live, lyrics untouchable, and his creativity exceeds anything else out there today, hands down. This album is tight from front to back with personal favorites "Two Bad Ants" and "No Cure For Sugar" getting a lot of replay. Any time the Gingerbread Man makes an appearance, things just go off the hook, and yeah, Z does all of his own artwork as well. This is rap originality at its best. If you're not in the know, then now's the time to start knowing...

5 out of 5 stars Z is the MAN.......2004-02-13

Dope or Dogfood might be considered Z-MAN's "debut" album but you can tell that he's been spittin' rhymes for a long time once you hear him. His lyrics are crazy funny and super intelligent. It's like every song is a new adventure and he's your tour guide. I also appreciate that fact that he crosses music genre barriers and just does his own thing. I recently found out that he also does all the drawings for his cover art himself. He is a true talent.
