Soundbombing

Editorial Reviews

Hip-hop compilations are a dime (bag) a dozen, and there's plenty of continuous-mix albums around. What makes this one special? Simple. It's a well-put-together mix of Rawkus Entertainment's best singles of 1997, and Rawkus is known for concentrating on strong MCs and creative DJs--hip-hop that holds up over time, not just the flavor of the moment. (Rawkus is also responsible for the excellent Lyricist Lounge, Volume One compilation.) Check out "Fire in Which You Burn," which puts the Indelible MCs over a sitar-tinged, raga-esque backing track, or the acclaimed--if still up-and-coming--Company Flow and Mos Def. Also good: Ra the Rugged Man, who comes across as a junior Busta Rhymes; Black Attack's jazzy "My Crown"; and Kool Keith's guest spot (always a treat) on Sir Menelik A.K.A. Cyclops 4000's "So Intelligent." --Randy Silver

wow... when i got this album i almost cried.. no wonder rawkus is almost obselete now.. good job guys.. i think this compilation scared all of the artists away from your label.. for shame... i cant think of one good song on this... there are several mediocre tracks on here... but who wants to be mediocre? this has got to be one of the biggest let downs around 2002... if you want satisfaction minus the thugged out mainstream garbage, pick up any of the old soundbombing comps or independents finest vols 1 & 2

4 out of 5 stars Dissapointing to Soundbombing II (3.5).......2006-06-11

If you've heard Soundbombing Vol 2, and try to listen to this one, you'll find that this one isn't as good as the recent. Some of the guests come off very weak, and far below their standards compared to other albums.

This Soundbombing is mixed by Cypha Sounds and Mr. Choc. I don't know much about DJing but they do a decent job mixing in the songs through out the album. The first single, "The Life" featuring Styles and Pharohe Monch really was a strong track that I really enjoyed. Then the next track "Freak Daddy" by Mos Def, I just didn't have too much of a feel for. The second single "Crew Deep" by Mad Skillz had a nice beat that features a hook from Missy and Kandi. "My Life (Remix)" sounded out of place, probably because of the vocals from Norega and Capone. Jonell's "Round & Round (Remix)" comes off good because of the verses from Pharohe Monch and Kool G. Rap.(There are 3 versions of this song, this one, one appeared on Hi-Tek's Album, and one on the "How High" Soundtrack). The next song by Q-Tip is average for his standards because of his lyrics. The Beanuts joint "The Trouble Is", I just didn't like because of the weak production. Talib Kweli and DJ Quik's "Put It In The Air" is one of the best songs on this album as both of their lyrics carry throughout each verse. "They Don't Flow" by Novel and Skillz just was plain terrible along with the singging as the hook. "Rhymes and Ammo" is a dope track by The Roots and Talib Kweli. I was mad Malik B wasn't in this song, but Dice Raw takes his place. "Spit Again" sounds like a reggae joint with vocals from Cocoa Brovaz aka Smif-N-Wessun. It reminds me of their old Bucktown tracks as both Tek and Steele go hard on this track. The last vocal track is "On The Block" that has some beat boxing as R.A. the Rugged Man reminesses the old 80's and 90's hip-hop days.

This is one of the last projects released by Rawkus Records before the record company was discontinued. I thought it was a decent compilation, but it also suffered its flaws on the album. If you're a young hip-hop head, you'll like this, but if you are older or if you've heard the Soundbombing II, you will be dissapointed. Recommended for hard Rawkus fans, or people who are just curious whats on here.

4 out of 5 stars Gets the job done.......2004-07-10

This c.d. got many of booty's shaking and the party rocking all night despite its commericialization. the songs have good production, not an underground sound which is another way of saying lack of talent! The mixing keeps songs flowing together, which is great when the party's jumping. Bumped this c.d. all around the U.S. and had no complaints from the ladies...and that's all that matters. Highlights include a bus full of girls in K.C. singing the Roots anthem "guns and ammo" and My Life is all I have..my rhymes my pen my pad...doesn't get better lyrically.

3 out of 5 stars READ THIS ONE........2004-02-23

First off who cares about labeling artists "underground". If an artist is good, he's sure to blow eventually. The problem with this album is the production, there are way too many hints of R&B. If anything, hard Rawkus type underground generally doesn't use lots of R&B, period. I guess they wanted more commercial success, and were trying to set the vibe of the album with the classic sounding single THE LIFE. Anyways it didn't really work, and some of the stuff is straight garbage. Best joints are My Life & The Life is crazy hot too. On The Block is nice. and same with Round & Round, Spit Again, and The Trouble is. Put it in the air is westcoast Quik style, but Rawkus is mainly East so??
I expected more from the Roots Kweli combo. Crew Deep is nice, but gets boring cuz the lyrics are crappy and not performed well.

There isn't really a whole lot that I can add to the other eviews. Soundbombing is classic material. Point blank. Period. If you're relatively new to rap music and you want to hear what some of your favorites sounded like before they started to slip (like Eminem, Dilated Peoples, High & Mighty, etc...), then get this album. This album is the perfect embodiment of what Rawkus stood for at its peak. Tight beats, dope rhymes, and two top notch DJs [J-Rocc & Babu aka The Bumrush Brothers] scratching and blending every song in an outstanding fashion.

As far as negative aspects, there are none. This album is simply flawless in my humble opinion. Without being too dramatic, I'd have to say that albums like these are simply impossible to recreate (which is why Soundbombing III pales in comparison). Soundbombing II is truly a once in a lifetime experience. Man, I really miss the old Rawkus days.

Like I said man, this album is the perfect representation of what Rawkus in its prime stood for. It simply doesn't get better than this. If you consider yourself a fan of "real" hip hop, then quit reading this review and click the "buy" button A.S.A.P.

5 out of 5 stars One Rawkus Classic...Simple As That [5 Stars].......2006-06-10

Truefully, there isn't much to say. Soundbombing II is one of the best compilation albums that I have heard, brought to you by a company once known as Rawkus Records. The album is mixed by The Beat Junkies, some of the best DJ work I've ever heard on any album. Artists such as Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Pharohe Monch, Sadat X, and others come correct on just about every verse you've heard. Eminem handles his job on the track "Any Man", the best I've ever heard him rhyme. Talib Kweli and Bahamadia swap verses on the song "Chaos". Dialated People's join up with Tha Alkaholik's member Tash, for the song "Soundbombing". One of the best tracks is the Common and Sadat X song "1-9-9-9" on one of the most relaxed beats. Then the next track is Diamond D's "When It Pours, It Rains", which isn't bad but its short. Theres a 12" version where him and Jon Doe swap verses that should have been on here, but its a good track still. Also a lot of artists make special appearances throughout the album.

Overall I enjoyed this comp. This album is where you can hear most of your favorite artists, while they were still good behind the mic. I recommend this album just for those people and any hip hop heads. You will not be dissapointed (unlike the next Soundbombing)

As the home of Black Star and Company Flow, Rawkus has made a name for itself as the label for any late-1990s discerning hip-hop fan. But DJs have come to know Rawkus as the home of some of the underground's best singles--tracks that were available only on vinyl until the label started the Soundbombing series. Soundbombing II opens with Beat Junkies J-Rocc and Babu working their magic on Eminem's "Any Man"--and while it's a strong track from the wack-minded MC, it's clear that the men behind the wheels of steel are hosting this party. That's not to imply that the MCs aren't doing their part--Mos Def is the best part of a great track on "B-Boy Document"; his partner in Black Star, Talib Kweli, busts out with his other crew, Reflection Eternal, and the sultry-voiced Bahamadia on "Chaos"; Medina Green displays a nice flow on "Crosstown Beef" (produced, incidentally, by De La Soul's Posdanuos); and Dilated Peoples drop their science over minimal backing on "Soundbombing." There's more (from Company Flow, Grand Puba, Sir Menelik, Common, and Sadat X, among others), and it's consistently interesting, if not consistently overwhelming. --Randy Silver

4 out of 5 stars (8 out of 10) Maybe I Reviewed This Too Fast.......2006-06-10

When I first heard this album here, I thought it was a tight compliation and gave this a 5 star rating (10 out of 10)(My older review will remain on the reissue of this album). After about 4 of 5 spins I began to see the flaws in this album. First a lot of the members don't bring their A game behind the mic. For example: On The High And Mighty's "B-Boy Document 99", Mr. Eon gets outshined by the guests on that song, in this case Mos Def, and Mad Skillz. Diamond D on the song "When It Pours, It Rains" doesn't come off as strong as I heard him on his solo albums. Also I like the beat on that song, but unfortunately is short. The thing that makes me angry is that Jon Doe produced the track, and there is a rare 12" version where he rhymes making it a full length song, instead of some minute and something short track.

Okay, enough griping. Now for the good stuff. Other artists do bring their A game though. The most rememberable song is the Eminem "Any Man". Other artists that shine are R.A. The Rugged Man on the song "Stanley Kubrick", Dilated Peoples on the song "Soundbombing", as well as the hit single on this comp, "1-9-9-9" by Common and Sadat X, just to name a few. Other artists that appear on this are Medina Green, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Pharohe Monch, Company Flow, Sir Menelik, Grand Puba, and more. There are many other dope tracks that I recommend that you should check out. If you like compilation albums, then this one is perfect for you.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2006-04-30

Really great CD, alot of good artists on it. Little bit of comedy as well. This was when Rawkus was in its prime. If you want a mix CD, this is the first one you should buy. Every song is hot, not one track should be skipped. Even the Eminem song is hot. It's a 5 star album so pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars RAWKUS AT IT'S FINEST..........2005-06-25

Once again, another fine mixtape courtesy of the late Rawkus Records (late because Kweli's the only artist still on). Before rap became permanently commercial, "Soundbombing vol. 2" was released at the highest point of the rap revivalist movement. DJ's J-Rocc and Babu aka the Bumrush Brothers seamlessly blend various 12" releases like they was born with it, also including the clever idea of putting an instrumental (featuring underground legends giving shout-outs) before the actual song, and scratch the mess out of it with other samples. Like any mixtape for the streets, there are no sweet tracks on this album. For the whole spin, this album is rough and rugged (giving you various images of stories and neighborhoods from New York to LA); beats are dusty to the break and the rhymes are top notch. The highlight tracks are the trancendent "1-9-9-9" with Common and Sadat X, July 4th celebration "Next Universe" with Mos Def, a mystic track "Chaos" with Reflection Eternal and Bahamadia, the caper "Crosstown Beef" with Mos' crew Medina Green, the short but gutter "Brooklyn Hard Rock" with Thirstin Howl III, and last but not least, the banger "Every Rhyme I Write" feat Smif-N-Wessun (aka Cocca Brovaz) and Shabaam Sadeeq. Further guest appearances are Grand Puba, Sir Menelik, Pharaohe Monch, Eminem, Skilz, Dialated Peoples, Tash, The High and Mighty, and Company Flow. If you claim you underground (I mean, below the subway underground), cop this. If you love hip-hop in its purest form, COP THIS!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Just plain sick........2005-05-18

Man, if there was any kind of compilation album to get, this is it. They have the World Famous Beat Junkies on the Ones and two's doing a great job, man it felt as if you were listening to a mix show with great underground hip hop. Now the line up, great, if not better than the first ( which the first had an allstar lineup.) Having Eminem spit fire on Any Man over a dope beat was just sick, which was nice to see Slim Shady from his underground days before he put out the wack My Name is. Man, B-Boy document was just plain hot. A line up of Mos Def, Mad Skillz (or now known just as Skillz) team up with High and Mighty was nice. It was nice to see Pharoahe Monch on the mic on Mayor and WW III. Shabaam tore it up on Every Rhyme I Write and WWIII. I loved the Reflection Eternal songs, but since when did Reflection Eternal not come out with good songs. Common and Sadat X came correct on the mic on 1999. The only complaint I had was Diamond D. Man, the beat on When It Pours It Rains was just nice, but Diamond, quotes "The ice on my wrist makes the honey's eye's squint." Or " I want boats and planes, Ice ropes and chains" type of lines was just weird for a pioneer in hip hop to say. I guess his buddy and partner Fat Joe from Diggin in the Crates is getting to him. This same song is in Roc Raida's Crossfadaz cd, titled MC 2 which has the same verses as Soundbombing's but has John Doe trading the mic with Diamond in the Crossfadaz version. I wish they used that version because John Doe's verse was tight and definitely drowned out some of the wack lines Diamond put in. RA kind of turned me off with "We smackin B**ches by the hundreds." in Stanley Kubrick, but hey, that beat was just sick. Those were the only complaints with a strong album that ranges from artists like Eminem to Medina Green to Cocoa B's to the Mighty Mos. Beats are just plain nice, so it goes well with the Soundbombing title. All the lyrics are top notched, minus Ra and Diamond, but they are good mc's so I'm glad they are on this. This is a classic, so anybody that's a real hip hop fan, you need to have this.

4 out of 5 stars EVIL DEE NEEDS TO SHUT THE HELL UP!.......2006-02-05

This album could easily get 5 stars if it wasnt for Evil Dees friggn mouth. It HAS to be the most annoying self promotion in history. I found myself trying to constantly fast-forward through the beginning of almost every track due to that idiot. Mos, Company Flow and Talibs tracks stand out the most but the others are nothing to sneeze at. DEFINITELY WORTH THE PURCHASE....CLASSIC.....just makes you HATE Evil Dee.

4 out of 5 stars Classic tracks but Evil Dee is like stratching a blackboard.......2004-09-24

This CD includes the orginal Rawkus 12''s which, in my opinion are some of the best underground hip hop traks to come out in the late nineties. Major highlight include Mos Def's "Universal Magnetic", and Kweli's "2000 Seasons" (my favorite tracks from these guys including anything from Black Star), and Company Flow's "Fire in Which You Burn" and "Lune Tns". It's really a shame, this could have been a seminal compilation were it not for how freakin' annoying Evil Dee is on this CD. Look, I love early Black Moon but someone has got to shut this guy up on this comp. I've rarely heard anything more annoying in my life. You know those pirate Reggae stations were the DJ's can't stop interrupting the songs to "big up" everyone and their mother. Well, this is more annoying. As far as musical content this CD deserves 5 stars, its way better than the second Soundbombing. But Rawkus really screwed up with this Evil Dee nonsense. Luckily they got smart and had J-Rocc and Babu from the Beat Junkies mix the second one. I can only imagine how glorious this CD could have been had it been mixed by Bobitto or Roc Raida, or anyone.

2 out of 5 stars DJ EVIL DEE NEEDS TO SHUT UP!.......2004-04-07

this is a great album that has been turned into something far less than that. I'd love this album if Evil Dee didn't have the same intro on almost every friggin' track "...DJ Evil Dee is on the cut, come on kick it..." or some crap like that. The Mos Def tracks are especially good, but sometimes the DJ just needs to stop self-promoting so f**king much!

5 out of 5 stars The best mixtape cd ever!!!!!!!!!.......2004-03-13

This album is the best album of all-time. This album has some of the illest underground hip hop songs ever. The cd is mixed by one of the illest djs, DJ Evil Dee. The best songs are Arabian Nights by Shabaam Sahdeeq, Empire Staters by B-One, and 2000 Seasons by Reflection Eternal. This album is only for people who truly love hip hop music.

4 out of 5 stars Dope ish.......2003-11-15

Now i don't beleive in giving an album 5 stars usually...and this is no exception, even though this just IS underground rap in it's purest form. DJ Evil Dee (of Black Moon) puts together some of the finest mcs to ever emerge from the underground. Hot tracks include Flipside, Lune TNS, Arabian Nights, Fortified Live, My Crown, just to name a few. A worthy buy for any rap fan.

5 out of 5 stars The Ill Shiste/bomb-diggy-diggy/necessity for life.......2001-03-09

This is an essential for and hip hop purist, MC or DJ. Every iota of sound is perfectly produced by the best. Whether you're down with form or freestyle, abstact, thuggin it or lovin it, you'll geek out over this unadultered bliss. Evil dee goes a bit over the top at times, but with good reason. If you're addicted to music, after this you'll be chill for a moment . . . to say the least. In fact, I stake my reputation as ineffable that it really is the difinitive guide to AN UNDERGROUND . . . even if it isn't underground still. FOR THE LOW LOW PRICE OF $_____ YOU TOO CAN BE DOWN. Word

5 out of 5 stars Nice representation from the underground..........2001-02-23

Evil D was on the mix, come on kick it!

Here's one of Rawkus's earlier projects featuring dope MCing, professional DJing, and an entourage of talent that the commercialized media / money hungry "MCs" (excuse that usage) are unable to show...

This record is such a treat because it contains some of Talib Kweli's and Mos Def's oldest tracks: "Fortified Live" , "If You Can Uhh" , "Universal Magnetic" , "2000 Seasons" , and a nice freestyle by both. It also gives the lesser known Rawkus MCs a chance to shine along: Company Flow, Black Attack, Sabaam Saadeeq, RA Rugged Man, Sir Melenik...

Like always the underground mcs are always impressive, takin their stabs at commercialized rappers: RA Rugged Man especially, but he's the only one I wasn't crazy for on the CD, but he's ok...and obviously Company Flow, Mos & Talib, and Saadeeq were excellent which i expected ahead of time, but that Black Attack track "My Crown" my reaction was like - oh sh** that was sweet...

And Soundbombing Vol 2 was even better...and i'm still awaiting a probably impressive 3.

5 out of 5 stars True Hip Hop Classic.......2000-12-11

This is the soundbombing you want to get. Every time I listen to this I take a little piece of knowledge that I didn't have before. Talib Kweli really shines on this, delivering the thought provoking "What If?"(with some hilarious additions by Evil Dee), and the jaw-dropping "2000 Seasons". Other highlights are L Fudge , Ra the Rugged Man, and, of course Mos Def. But by far the best track is the Indelible MCs' "The Fire in Which You Burn" Every MC drops a bucketful of gems, the beat is amazing, and El-P burns the track to the ground, the best verse I"ve heard from him. He ends his part, not asking, but demanding you don't forget his name. Don't.

5 out of 5 stars the illest mcs on the M I C.......2000-05-24

yo soundbombing one was made when rawkus first started risin. the catz on this are so real its undescribable. Shabaam sahdeeq rips it on "arabian nights" and that beat is the illest i ever heard. theres also mos and kweli kickin it on "2000 seasons" and then theres the illest duo company flow who rip the mic.. but yo if your an underground cat then catch this. one

5 out of 5 stars Hip Hop Classic.......1999-10-29

Great disc with awesome songs dropped from Comapny Flow, Mos Def and RA among others. But to me the centerpiece of the album is the song "Arabian Knights" from Shabaam Sahdeeq. Only bad part of the album for me is that Evil Dee is an annoying little monkey but i'll let that slide 'cause thats why i have the search button for. if you dont have this album get it now

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2000-10-21

You will never get bored of this album. The beats, the flow and the mix are all top drawer. It takes a lot to get my head banging when I'm driving (or any other time) but this disk is so dope I find myself rapping like I'm a badass and banging my steering wheel with a passion. Its consistantly brilliant and I haven't yet found anything comparable. Mos Def, Dilated Peoples, High and Mighty; Their albums are excellent in places but I always find my finger hovering over the f-fwd button. Never with this one though. I recommend the dirty version, however.

      5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!.......2000-02-02

Want to talk about talent? Rawkus has got it! What a label! There's not one bad track. We're talkin REAL DJ's. They're one of the most talented labels I think. PROPS TO J-ROCC AND BABU! Please, keep the hits comin!

5 out of 5 stars If you like the N.Y. underground style rap, you'll love this.......1999-06-24

Rawkus records is the best rap label out there. I got Lyracist Lounge and this one and they're the best 2 rap albums in my collection. What's best is it's got the hottest djs scratchin over beats at the beginning of almost every song. I haven't heard this good an album in a long time

5 out of 5 stars Mix tape fans, cop this sh**!!.......1999-06-11

Even if you've never heard a mix tape/CD in your life, this CD is must buy! It is a classic from start to finish. It can and will give mainstream heads a whole new respect for underground hip-hop. But when the underground consists of artists like Cocoa Brovas, Mad Skillz, Common, R.A., Mos Def, and Talib Kweli, respect is essential! For all of you Eminem fans like myself, he still holdin' it down with has fabulous freestyle. I love all of the songs, but "1999" has the greatest classic feel of all the songs. It is the flagship which has graced the skies of BET(Video Vib, Rap City, etc.) and MTV(Yo!), bombarding listeners with lyrical darts a la Common and Sadat X and Talib Kweli, telling you not to sleep in this album! Take their advice, and get yours in the 1-9-9-9 by getting "Soundbombing II"!

      5 out of 5 stars REAL HIP-HOP IZ MAKING A COME BACK.......1999-06-07

Put it in your cd player and let it play. You won't even have to worry about fast forwarding. It's blazing hot. Hard knock beats and bomb lyric's. This cd is "REAL HIP-HOP".

4 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air during the slow downfall of Rawkus..........2002-07-05

This is the 3rd installment of the soundbombing series... Soundbombing started off as all the vinyl singles released by Rawkus's earliest artists when the label first came out. Let's take a quick history lesson.....

SB 1 was quoted as 'the official guide to underground hiphop' and the project was a hiphop head's wet dream... it had a very nice mixture between songs and had some of the most intelligent lyricists out in hiphop at the time. It contained some of the earliest material from Mos and Kweli, it helped start out Company Flow, and Shabaam Sahdeeq was butter all over this and was a major highlight. Following the first Soundbombing was SB 2 and that actually OUT-SHONE its ancestor... having DJ Babu and J-Rocc mix it was a good move and the production was even better. There were a couple great performances especially by Eminem, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Common, Pharoahe Monch (his best material up to date), and Shabaam was still hungry... This was RAWKUS truly at its best time...

Unfortunately after Reflection Eternal's "Train Of Thought" (2001's Best CD NO QUESTIONS ASKED) dropped, Rawkus slowed down with putting out butter material. Smut Peddlers were alright but nothing special, Beatminerz was weak, and Hi-Tek's CD was a breath of fresh air.... HOWEVER lyricist lounge 2 was the pinnacle of Rawkus's attempt at gaining commercial appeal and it failed terribly, and the CD left Rawkus heads wondering what to think of Rawkus now...

When SB 3 came out I was skeptical to whether or not to check out the CD. So I bought it and fortunately it turned out to be another breath of fresh air (like Hiteknology)... however, this CD could also be a turn off for the die-hard Rawkus fans

If you compare this CD with it's predecessors, you'll be greatly disappointed and will hate this CD. If you compare it with post-train of thought Rawkus projects you'll enjoy it. If you compare it with the garbage out there on radio land, you'll think this is a rather dope project...... After I looked at those three stipulations I must say this is a somewhat solid effort of a mixtape (but it doesn't live up to the previous Soundbombings) ....

GOOD TRACKS - "The Life" (dope sh** from stylez and monch) , "MY Life" (C-N-N doesn't ruin the track and G. Rap is nice), "Round & Round remix" (nice appearances by Meth, Monch, and G. Rap), "Yelling Away" (Kweli and Com are nice on this, nice beat, Zap Mama is alot like Badu), "What Lies Beneath" (nice ATCQ style beat and Tip is coming back to normal... but the chorus is awful), "Put It In The Air" (SMOOTH BUTTER BEAT and Kweli is nice on it), "Rhymes and Ammo" (Roots and Kweli hype it up), "On The Block" (R.A. comes with that underground appeal... another R.A. classic)...

BAD THINGS ON THIS CD - Mos Def "Freak Daddy" was surprisingly GARBAGE, Skillz seemed a little lazy on this, too many R&B hooks and wack hooks, cypha sounds and mr. choc's scratching is terrible (it sounds like the CD is skipping rather than the turntables at work)...

OVERALL its a decent CD during Rawkus's worst musical time period, and the positives outweigh the negatives.... buy it on SALE!!! unless you're a die hard fan
