Amazon.com essential recording

The best of Buddy Guy's solo albums since his 1991 reemergence finds him mixing songs from his concert repertoire ("Someone Else Is Steppin' In") with blues chestnuts ("I Smell Trouble") and his own new originals, like the gritty plea for urban spiritual renewal "Cities Need Help." His performance is raw and natural, a nasty throwback to his late-'60s roadhouse days. Guy takes unbridled pleasure in hard playing and vocal shouting that straddles the soul-blues border. The absence of shallow attempts at pop-radio play and the lack of guest appearances by rock stars or emerging bluesmen like Jonny Lang, which plague most of Guy's recent CDs, is refreshing. This is simply Buddy, on his own strong terms. --Ted Drozdowski

5 out of 5 stars Guy Delivers The Real Blues On "Slippin' In".......2007-05-26

How bad was Buddy Guy missed before he came back on the scene with "Damn Right I Got The Blues?" "Too badly to even say" is the answer. His playing on "Slippin' In" ranks as some of the best he's ever recorded.

Guy demonstrates the finesse, skill, flexibility, and raw power possessed by only a very few guitar players. His solos on "Please Don't Drive Me Away" prove that what those who saw him play live even back in the 60's say is true. That Guy plays like a cross between straight blues, jazz guitarist, and heavy metal. His playing on "Please Don't Drive Me Away," "7-11," "Don't Tell Me About The Blues," and "Cities Need Help" is unbelievable at times. The same thoughts cross your mind listening to him as they do when you listen to Hendrix. "How did he do that?" "How can you make that kind of sound with a guitar?"

"Slippin' In" just proves that we've got to grab a hold of Buddy Guy and not let loose of him. He's not allowed any more sabbaticals. We miss out on way too much when he's away.

5 out of 5 stars This is what a blues album should sound like !.......2007-01-26

WOW! I just finished listening to this, and I am blown away.
I try to listen to as many different styles of music as I can. This album is a fine example of blues.
This is what any great blues album should sound like.
Just take this album for a spin.
You can't really talk about one song on this record, without mentioning the other ones.
It starts with a great opener, and follows through to the end.
Just do yourself a favor and listen to Buddy Guy.

5 out of 5 stars Great Modern Blues.......2007-01-03

I admit I love Buddy Guy. I have seen him live twice and Slippin' In does a great job of catching his show. Raw, hard Chicago blues with some R&B and Rock. A must buy for blues fans or anyone wanting to get some BG.

5 out of 5 stars Buddy Guy is eternal.......2006-10-27

Okay, I'm a Buddy Guy fan, and rarely am I disappointed when I'm listening to him. This album is exciting, and if you think you like the blues at all, you need to listen to this.

4 out of 5 stars very good album.......2006-03-12

today for some strange reason i dug up this album&I had revisted my Buddy Guy&Junior Wells Album some time ago.but this album reminded me of what I dig best about Guy&that is when he is flowing by himself without trying to sound like he is trying to fit into other territory.this album has something for everyone&works."Cities Needs Help" is very direct&Political&gets to the Point. I dig how He uses his Riffs on this album that showcase his playing&allows room for solos&Him to arrange parts around it without being over produced.the title cut is a trip&has me rolling.but it is the truth. I enjoyed the overall Production, instrumentation&writing on this album.Probably the last Buddy Guy album that I can get into more than halfway through.I dig hearing Him play anything, but on Record this is the last album that truly sticks fo rme.dude has his own signature on the Axe."Don't tell me about the Blues" is on point as well.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome surf music.......2006-07-15

The opening track, Ocean Beach, alone is worth the price. I have seen the Mermen in person several times, and one has to SEE Jim Thomas, and be a guitar player, to appreciate the way this man manhandles the instrument. He is a player who will never be duplicated. He routinely grabs sequences of maximum-finger-stretching chords through eighth-note-speed passages...while staring intensely at audience members, away from his guitar. I think he uses bridge-cable-gauge strings to keep from ripping them apart.

Part of surf music, I think, is an attempt to communicate the vastness of the ocean and sky when you're floating on the surface. You don't get the same sensations from the deck of a boat that you get on a surfboard. Since the sea is the most dynamic medium of forces a man can enter, only a dynamic artistic medium, like music, can begin to describe it. If it could be represented statically, surfers would paint.

Hence the spacious guitar effects and strange song titles, and mindbending compound adjectives necessary to describe the music.

This is an early album, and the production is not pro enough to capture the excitement of every song, but if you like surf music at all, you should try this modern update.

5 out of 5 stars A Celestial Wall Of Sound.......2001-11-28

In my own humble opinion, Jim Thomas is one of the most creative, gifted and articulate guitarists around. Every song here is thoughtfully arranged, and brought to life in a simple yet, undeniably beautiful fashion. Granted this is their first studio effort, and bigger productions lay ahead. However, all of these songs reveal what is at the heart of The Mermen: Epic-sized surf with a delicate soul. This is also much more represntative of their 'live' sound. No generic, three-chord, go-go beach tunes here, this is majestic and ominous surf rock for the future.

5 out of 5 stars The first release--a benchmark recording.......2001-07-02

Krill Slipping is a good collection of music. It is easily the most accessible of their recordings, and shows their hommage to 60's style surf music. That being said, the Mermen redefine the Genre for the post modern, post psychedelic era. Lets face it gang the genie is out of the bottle. Roll with it. This is not my favorite Mermen CD, however, they are all recordings that, if not to kill for, at least to have and to hold. This is recently reissued, so get it while you can. The Mermen are easily the greatest psychedelic, greatest surf, and simply the heaviest band that there ever was. Get every CD you can. Also, if you like the Mermen, check out he Surf Coasters.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Hillman Shines in L.A........2004-08-06

Chris Hillman never seems to get his due. His band mates and collaborators always seems to get more acclaim than he does, despite almost 40 years of creating excellent American music. This 1977 album came after Hillman, J.D. Souther, and Richie Furay failed to become the new Eagles and is one of the strongest outings of his career. That is saying a lot as Hillman was a key part of the Byrds "Sweetheart of the Rodeo," the Flying Burrito Brothers "Gilded House of Sin," and "Manassas" with Stephen Stills. Yet Gram Parsons, Roger McGuinn, Emmy Lou Harris, David Crosby, and Stills sport stronger reputations than Hillman in the eyes and ears of many music critics. Maybe Hillman is just too nice a guy. Whatever, this solo album (the first of his career) features several great songs in the 1970s Southern California singer-songwriter mold. If the Eagles had covered "Slippin' Away," it would be in constant rotation today on classic rock radio. "Step on Out" is a great opener and later a country hit for the Oak Ridge Boys. "Love is the Sweetest Amnesty" is as sweet as its' title and "(Take Me In Your) Lifeboat" is a rousing gospel closer. Hillman is a fine singer, deft Mandolin and bass player, and a strong songwriter. His recent work with Herb Pederson and with Larry and Tony Rice is rich and rewarding. This album got lost in the country rock glut of the mid-1970s, but it stands out nicely today as one of the best solo efforts from a former Byrd.

2 out of 5 stars Not quite the Paladins.......2001-11-09

Brought up on the hard rockin' agressive style of the Paladins this album comes as a little of a dissapointment, the 'billy edge seems to have gone which for me was always what the Paladins were about. I've played it once and no tracks really hit me and it's now consigned to the CD shelf. Are we losing that Paladin sound we need.......!?! I've ordered Palvoline so we'll see.

4 out of 5 stars a great cd from the pals.......2000-11-29

man, another killer cd from the paladins. part country, rockabilly, and a little swing, this record is their best yet. dave brian and joe did it right on this one and the shows are great.

4 out of 5 stars The best roots album in years!!!.......1999-10-06

This album contains authentic rockabilly sounds, real country music, western swing and a surf instrumental tune thrown in for good measure. If you are a Paladins fan that came on board with Ticket Home(later reissued as Rejivinated) you may not dig this cd as much as the rest of us. I think this is one of their best albums to date and it is certainly the best rockabilly they have recorded. BUY IT NOW!!!

5 out of 5 stars one great record.......1999-10-03

it took awhile but i love this record. its way more rockabilly than their previous, combined with a chunk of western swing and country. this is a great record. lady luck, vampira, california boogie.. man you cant go wrong. only 2 songs i didnt like. judgement day and 5 min love affair. the rest is great. definately a good purchase. its good to hear these guys are still making music the right way, instead of trying to copy it and sound exactly like one style. they take it all and put it together and come up with a gem.

    5 out of 5 stars RED-HOT.......1999-07-28

This is on band I can never get enough of. This is a step back to their earlier days of rockabilly along with a twist of country thrown in. A really good record over all and if you dig The Paladins first 2 records you won't be disappointed. It's a must for any Paladins fan so do yourself a favor and buy this record!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
