This Judas Priest release includes a DVD with the 30 minute Reunited documentary that lays the ground work for first new music from the original lineup in 15 years. From the slow crescendo of guitar and a scream at the beginning, this new outing from the reformed and re-invigorated Priest states one thing very clearly: The band is back and ready to reclaim their crown as hard rock titans. The songs, production, and performances are all on par with classics such as British Steel and Screaming For Vengeance. And the album definitely makes references Priest's past, from the opening screech of "Judas Is Rising" to more direct lyrical name-checking (Painkiller in "Demonizer" and Sad Wings of Destiny in "Angel"). But there is a newer experimentation - a slower, darker streak - also evident on Halford's underrated Crucible, that lets the listener know the band is not resting on its laurels. The is very evident on the 10 minute closer "Lock Ness", an epic on par with songs off Opeth's masterful Deliverance. Make no mistake: The Metal Gods are definitely back. --Robert Arambel

the priest is BACK!.......2007-06-19

I had my doubts about this at first. I really did. I wasn't sure if Priest could crank it up and crank it out the way they used to be able to. For any of you who are still on the fence, let me tell ya: this is one hell of a comeback statement. Sure, Priest has been around in name the last 15 years, but after Halford left, the band's sound changed completely. The first three tracks on their own are enough enticement to buy the album. "Judas Rising" builds from silence into a drum pattern from Scott, and then Glenn, K.K. and Ian literally come thundering in. A tremendous opener. The bass riff on "Revolution" has a bit of a blues feel to it, but that doesn't stop it from kicking back and rocking out. "Angel" is a nice little ballad (think recent live versions of "Diamonds and Rust"). The highlight, for me, is "Hellrider." It reminds me of "Leather Rebel," which is definitely a good thing. And then we have the closer, "Lochness," a 13 and a half minute epic. It doesn't drag, and the chorus is really neat. The verdict: the metal gods are back in full force. Angel of Retribution fails to disappoint.

F**k Yeah!! The Priest are BACK!!!.......2006-12-22

They are back!!! This is Halford's best effort since Defenders. Every song is solid with the best vocals and guitar playing yet. Never have I heard such a complete Priest album (and I have them all in either CD or cassette). If it came after Screaming for Vengeance, nobody would have minded much. Other than Loch Ness almost a complete concept album for them. In fact they rip themselves off and it sounds awsome!! Only the Priest. Everytime I play this album it gets better and better. Defenders it good (Defenders, Spread Eagle, Love Bites (best ever never live)) but it is not even as complete as this or Screamin'. Must buy for a diehard Priest/Halford fan (loved Fight's first one).

Priest return in fine form.......2006-10-21

It's great to see that Halford has reunited with the band, and releasing what is easily their best work in twenty years. Other than 'Revolution' being the weak point on the album, the rest of the tracks simply rock. Listening to many of the songs, a longtime Priest fan cannot help but feel as if they've returned to their old stomping grounds.

Brave New Priest.......2006-10-16

The triumphant return of the Halford-led Judas Priest is easily the biggest metal release of the entire year. Fans have been anticipating and speculating since the band announced their reunion last year. Finally, Priest well...delivers the goods (sorry, I couldn't resist that one). Angel of Retribution is a solid, professional traditional metal album, and is exactly what you'd expect from Judas Priest now that Rob Halford is back in the fold. It's got plenty of fist-pumping rockers, like album opener Judas Rising, Demonizer, and Hellrider, and the occasional slow song (Angel). The album's final song, the 13-minute Loch Ness, based on the legendary monster, seems a bit out of place though, sounding like something more suited to an Iced Earth album.

It may not be as heavy as the Halford solo albums, but Angel of Retribution definitely has more in common with Painkiller than the often trashed Turbo. The only drawback is that the band didn't seem to challenge themselves or take any chances. It's a good album, but a safe one. It reminds me a lot of Iron Maiden's reunion album Brave New World, in that it is a solid album and a good comeback, but nothing we weren't expecting and certainly nothing we hadn't heard before. Still, it's good to know that Priest is back together and capable of making quality metal albums.

Decent, Enjoyable.......2006-07-25

I heard "Revolution" on the radio a year ago and I thought, "oh no...this is it? This is the long awaited reunion? This is horrible!" Then recently I saw the recent tour on video and it was full of energy so I listened to "Angels of Retribution" and I was really surprised. The songwriting is decent, a lot better than some of their past albums. There's an edge, Rob sounds great and some songs really kick a--. The majority of the songs are short, there aren't any complex diversions or progressions or long searing guitar solos or double solos. But it doesn't matter, it's in your face. I like this better than Rob with his own band. The mix is absolutely excellent: it's balanced and you can hear everything. It sounds great really loud in the car. I'm glad I picked it up! Not bad for guys who have been around 35 years.

I had almost given up on good metal becoming a reality in my lifetime (with a few rare exceptions of course) till the Priest reunited. I held my breath and hoped for at least a savory morsel from the past. That's not what I got: Judas Priest came back from the dead and kicked my arse! This is easily a collection of some of the best work of any metal band of any time...period. Judas Priest is REAL, and it shows in the music. It's classic Priest while being on the cutting edge of great metal.
Any metalhead must, and I repeat must own this CD. The DVD side reaffirms why metal isn't just great music to me but a way of life; it's an attitude about life and it's being part of a family (with a few disfunctional members like all families!).
Buy this CD and be prepared to raise your devil fist and be blown away.

Oh my goodgoods mates. This may very well be the sonic icecream i've desired for a yonder day. The beginning = great.com. The end = great.com.au The middle = great.com.au/nopants. In the summation to follow i will allude to blood dripping from my horses nose and the relevance this has to Judas Priest's latest (and most delicious) release.

Out came my leathers and handy ol' leathery whip. I tilted my leather cap slightly to the side, covering one eye and cranked Angel Of The Retributions. How good? Whispers of grand appreciation doth quiver! Manowar aint invited to my graduation, cos they wear tight the vests of brotherhood. This is the kind of album that has recently been responsible for global warming in the tropics, but thats ok, because they like their heat in the tropics.

To quote a famous relative of mine, Hunky Uncle Raymond, "This album be thine gift of eternal bliss. Dinner will be ready soon. Apricots and beans! But sleep lightly dearest son, for beasts reside below your comfy bed, with teeth like razors and a craving for young meat. Should you be taken tonight, so be it. But will you haunt our dreams...?"

Back to Manowar. This album isn't by Manowar. So don't buy it with the intention of adding to your ever growing Manowar collection. Because this is Judas Priest. Not Manowar. Judas. Priest that is.

Best (Whole) Priest Album Since "Screaming For Vengeance".......2007-04-01

How good is this 2005 Judas Priest CD, which is highlighted by the return of their original "metal god" singer Rob Halford? Well, let me tell you a story: I bought it last November and fully digested the recording for 2-3 weeks. I felt it was decent new Priest material. I then got rid of it. About 3 months later I started yearning to hear certain songs from the CD again; this kept up for a few weeks until I finally had to buy it again (!). I am now of the mind that ANGEL OF RETRIBUTION stands with the very best Priest albums and is, in fact, their best (whole) album since the stellar SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE from 1982.

Here's a run-down of the songs:

(1.) "Judas Rising." This is a decent, driving opener with a sinister edge. I can take it or leave it, however. It's nothing phenomenal. Personal Rating: 3/5 Stars.

(2.) "Deal With The Devil." This one is even more driving than the first tune and WAY more catchier. Everything works here; it's smokin' and magical. The lyrics address Judas Priest's slow rise to fame as they almost solitarily forged this musical genre called metal. The title and chorus, if taken literal, suggests that they made a deal with the devil to achieve success. Of course their just pokin' fun at the whole idea of "the devil's music," but I personally would never joke about such things. Personal Rating: 4.5/5 Stars.

(3.) "Revolution." This short ditty is the big 'hit' of the album, kinda along the lines of "United" or "You've Got Another Thing Comin'." It definitely jams and is full of hooks. You'll hear a little Led Zeppelin vibe here and there. Personal Rating: 4/5 Stars.

(4.) "Worth Fighting For." This song also has 'hit' written all over it. It's sort of a ballad, but not quite, if you know what I mean. Everything magically works. One of the highlights of the album. Personal Rating: 5/5 Stars.

(5.) "Demonizer." This is a fast, aggressive, double-bass driven number. The lyrics are sci-fi/fantasy oriented like "Sinner," "Exciter," "Saints in Hell" and numerous other Priest tunes. Personal Rating: 4/5 Stars.

(6.) "Wheels of Fire." This is a rockin' and well-done biker tune. Enjoyable, if nothing else. Personal Rating: 3.5/5 Stars.

(7.) "Angel." This is a beautiful, heartfelt ballad. I don't think it's about a woman, though; I think it's about a literal angel, possibly even the Angel of death (!). This is an incredible piece in every way; it ranks right up there with similar such Priest songs like "Dreamer Deciever" and "Here Come the Tears." Personal Rating: 5/5 Stars.

(8.) "Hellrider." Another smokin', aggressive number with sci-fi/fantasy oriented lyrics (like "Sinner" or "Exciter"). This song kicks a$$! Comparable to "Tyrant" (in particular the midsection of the song). Personal Rating: 4.5/5 Stars.

(9.) "Eulogy." A short, atmospheric, nigh-melancholic piece with a piano thrown in for good measure. Magnificent! Personal Rating: 5/5 Stars.

(10.) "Lochness." This is a long juggernaut about the Lochness monster. The opening is incredibly creative and the main riffs and stanzas are powerful and heavy. Unfortunately the chorus, albeit epic, is rather lame. Still, it's great to have priest do a heavy epic song like this. Personal Rating: 4.5/5 Stars.

FINAL ANALYSIS: It may not strike you at first (because it's new and nostalgia has no place) but ANGEL OF RETRIBUTION ranks up there with the very best Priest albums. In fact, this is the best Priest recording since SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE. Don't get me wrong, they've had many great SONGS since that time, for instance, "Hell Is Home," "Subterfuge," "Cyberface," "Touch of Evil," "Sentinel," etc. but ANGEL OF RETRIBUTION is definitely their best WHOLE album since then.

Of course, the real test of whether or not a CD is any good is if you keep playing it. Well, I can't stop playing ANGEL OF RETRIBUTION!

If you buy only one MC album make it this great sophmore effort!.......2007-08-07

Most bands have the problem of maintaining their existing sound by the time their second album comes out. Few maintain that sound and expand and craft their sound to make the final product even better. MC's second effort finds them with new drummer Alex Marquez and new second guitarist Rob Barrett. Unlike "The Ten Commandments", which was a solid debut effort, "Retribution" finds the group in a groove where they hash out well written songs one after another.

The guitar lines via Fasciana and Barrett are slightly more intricate than "commandments" and executed with razor sharp precision. The bass a la Jason Blachowicz (whoa, check out "Slaughter of Innocence") is much improved from "Commandments" where the bass was audible but lacked standout lines. Hoffmann's voice is just about the same and as possessed as ever. Marquez's drumming is a step up from Simpson's (who was decent) because he just maintains so much groove and plays off-track and then returns just as quick (see "No Flesh Shall be Spared" and "Monster"). He makes use of space and isn't flashy but does do some levels of drumming that are harder to replicate than most death metal drummers because he starts and stops at varying speeds and interchanges parts without any cue. The overall song writing here is much more solid, intricate and intense than "Commandments".

Too bad for MC they would have more line-up changes than Spinal Tap so the fury captured here didn't last too long. As a bonus, James Murphy (ex-Death, Obituary, Cancer, Testament) throws in a solo at the end of "Coronation". What more could you ask for?

The only thing holding it back is the production.......2007-06-29

This is the BEST Malevolent Creation album, albeit not my favorite. The production on this album is horrible. It sounds like it was recorded through a tunnel with you at the end.

With that out of the way, the songs on here are the strongest material they've ever written. The songs chug along with great riffs and good (by death metal standards) solos. The drumming DEFINITELY got better with the addition of Alex Marquez (I'm sorry, I couldn't stand Mark Simpson's drumming) and the drums don't sound one-dimensional.

This is the fastest 38 minutes I think I've ever heard. Most albums I have, I can FEEL the length, but for some reason, this comes and goes quickly, making me need to hear it twice! Great buy!

It Is Rather Sad..........2007-06-02

...that such an album like this just had to have production ceased. Malevolent Creation is a band that has remained active for years and is still going strong. The band's 2nd album, "Retribution", is a classic death metal released in the year of 1992, and it is definitely their strongest point in their career. The music is rather reminscent to bands such as Morbid Angel and Suffocation, as the band like to throw in quite a mixture in there. Whether it would be a thrashy moment like "Eve of the Apocalypse" or "Slaughter of Innocence" to a slower break like in "Coronation Of Our Domination", or even the Death reminscent "The Coldest Survive", MC can deliver it excellent. Brett Hoffman is a vocalist that I can describe as unique. He reminds me of Chuck Schuldiner, but with a lower pitch, and out of all the vocalists MC had, I prefer him, as he IS original. Jason Blachowicz is such an excellent and underrated bassist; he could easily be in league with Steve Digorgio (Sadus, Human era Death) and Alex Webster (Cannibal Corpse). Drumming by Alex Marquez is fantastic. Phil and Rob do excellent at riffs and solos. Overall, the math comes to an excellent sophomore effort.

My summary: If you love vintage death metal that originated from the East Coast, by all means do not hesitate to get this album. You might have to download it, as it is out of print, but it'll be great nonetheless. Make sure to also check out The Ten Commandments by this band as well.

Malevolent at there Best!.......2007-03-16

This is the heaviest, brutalist, deadly cd i have ever put on. Its weird like its got its groovy parts in the song which puts these guys ahead of there time. Its like the Pantera groove but in death metal but has Slayer's crushing riffs. This is a keeper for anyone in metal. Its god like with Rob Barrett on guitars. And the drumming with Brent Hoffman's vokills it just flows. A must have cd!!!!

A death metal milestone!!! This album along with "The ten commandments" and "Stillborn" exemplifies the death metal genre in the pure form. Good guitar riffs, excellent vocals and incredible drumming. A must have for the death metal aficionado. This album is out of print and hard to find but if you find it, buy it!! You won't regret it!!!

THE SOUND OF PEACE is an appropriate title for this gentle, relaxing, contemporary instrumental recording of acoustic piano music with a light synthesizer backing (often the sounds of strings, but occasionally other instruments as well). Combining some tightly-composed pieces with others that are highly improvisational over a loose structure, the music reflects Fluker's classical training with hints of his extensive work in R&B (Brenda Russell, Regina Bell), gospel (Mavis Staples, The Earl Nelson Singers) and smooth jazz (saxophonist Michael Lington). Primarily John has worked extensively with legendary singer Gladys Knight over the past decade-and-a-half and for several years served not only as her piano accompanist, but also as her musical director (and appeared on two of her albums). In addition, THE SOUND OF PEACE held the #1 position on two consecutive national New Age Reporter Top 100 radio airplay charts.

Some of the compositions on THE SOUND OF PEACE, such as "Journey of a Soul" and "Asleep Beneath the Moon (Part One and Part Two)" come directly out of Fluker's classical training and, according to his website, got their start from ideas that arose "while I was riffing to some Beethoven pieces." His background materials claim the track "Life Begins" was influenced by listening to other best-selling instrumental pianists including Ann Sweeten and Danny Wright. Fluker calls "The Hollow Earth" his "cinematic, experimental, fantasy piece." Two tunes demonstrate a bit of his R&B and pop music background ("A Time Before" and "A Dream Remembers"). With several pieces, Fluker has stated that he developed the main chord progression and then began recording improvisational variations on the loose themes ("The Sound of Peace," "Blue Sunday" and "Asleep Beneath the Moon").

For fans of quiet, delicate, piano-oriented instrumental music in the new age or neo-classical genres, visiting this CD will be a rewarding experience.

"The Sound of Peace" is the debut solo recording by John Fluker, but he is no newcomer to the music scene. The list of albums that he has played on and the artists that he has toured with is very impressive, and he is currently Music Director for Gladys Knight. The fourteen tracks on this CD were composed during the night, Fluker's favorite time to play the piano. Fluker's father encouraged him and told him repeatedly that his playing was very relaxing and soothing to him. When his father passed away last year, Fluker was inspired to compose this CD. Primarily a piano CD, Fluker has embellished most of the compositions with synth washes - strings, nature sounds, etc. - but these sounds enhance the mood and are never overbearing. As the title implies, the music on "The Sound of Peace" is warm and serene, encouraging the listener to float away on the gentle melodies. Also a teacher, producer, arranger, and vocal coach, Fluker's background in classical, traditional, and gospel music blend together to give him a unique musical voice.

All of the tracks on this CD are beautiful and easy to listen to, but I have a few favorites. "Asleep Beneath the Moon (Part 1)" is very tranquil and also suggests the feeling of wonder at looking up at the night sky and seeing all those millions of stars. "Part 2" of this piece is quite a bit longer and more exploratory - wonderful! "Journey of A Soul" is also gorgeous and oh, so soothing. The warmth of this piece is almost an inviting musical hug that lingers - I really love this one! "The Hollow Earth" is a bit darker and more introspective, but is still very peaceful. The sound of flowing water enhances the mood as Fluker explores the piano keyboard with a bit more improvisation on this one. The title track is much more ambient than melodic, and carries you away on a caress of sound. "Through New Eyes" has a strong message of renewal and hope. "Life Begins" opens with the sounds of birds and the piano and evolves into a lovely soundtrack to spring or any form of new life. The sound on this one is full and lush and conjures up many visual images.

As you can see, "The Sound of Peace" covers a lot of musical and emotional terrain, and yet the overall mood of the album is quite consistent. It's a wonderful backdrop for other activities, but opens up more each time you actively listen to it. Give your ears and mind a treat! Highly recommended.

Pianist and singer John Fluker embraces the idea of Christmas on this CD. While many artists select non-denominational seasonal tunes to broaden their possible audience, Fluker picks all songs that reflect Jesus' birth.

John chose to sing five traditional tunes about the first Christmas - "Oh Come All Ye Faithful," "We Three Kings," "Away in a Manger," "Joy To The World" and "Silent Night" - but fits them with new arrangements like they have never been heard before. "There was no point recording these standards unless I could bring something fresh and different to them," he explains. "I enjoyed the freedom of embellishing them my own way and using elements of pop, R&B and jazz." The upbeat "Joy To The World" is a duet between John and Florence LaRue of the group 5th Dimension (they have 20 Top-40 hits and six GRAMMY Awards). Fluker does a slow, peaceful version of the classic song "Away in a Manger." The other full-vocal piece is the original "Follow The Brightest Star" which asks "Why can't we have the Christmas spirit all year long?"

Fluker's soft-pop/R&B vocals show his influences -- years of performing at church as well as backing top singers such as Gladys Knight, Dionne Warwick, Oleta Adams, Boys II Men, Queen Latifah and Regina Belle.

Fluker made big waves with his previous recording, THE SOUND OF PEACE, which spent two months in the #1 position on the national New Age Reporter Top 100 radio airplay chart. That contemporary-instrumental debut album spotlighted his piano-playing and composing. Now he is showing a whole other side of his musical personality by showcasing his singing talents on J IS FOR JOY. On a couple of the classic carols his singing has a similar vocal quality to mid-period Stevie Wonder.

Two things make this recording unique - his unusual arrangements and the way he splits the music between vocal songs and mostly-instrumental tunes. But he does both styles well and it makes for a delightful holiday album.

Underrated, sludgy, gory old school DM (4.5 stars, 88%).......2006-12-05

Well kids here we have some pretty awesome old school death metal that's kind of derivative in a sense but still has a charm of its own since these guys were definitely the sludgiest/doomiest of the old school death metal bunch in the late 80s/early 90s and overall this is a pretty midpaced album, nothing too fast but still very heavy.

Musically this album is basically a mixture of Scream Bloody Gore and the Nihilist demos. It's pretty obvious in the riffing and vocals, in fact the description "Scream Bloody Gore part 2" is pretty appropriate as others have said. Reifert's high pitched vomiting vox are a combination of Chuck Schuldiner and LG Petrov, just listen to SBG and Nihilist/Left Hand Path and you'll see what I mean, they're pretty damn brutal too, especially for those days. There's a good amount of simple yet great solos and decent drumming, although I liked Reifert's performance on SBG better but it's ok I mean the man was singing too and I always give tons of respect to singer/drummers. That's why I love Ventor from Kreator so much. Attention bass fans, guess what you get Steve DiGiorgio on here too! Unfortunately he was only the session bassist and not a permanent member but he sounds great on this album although not quite as amazing as his other bands (Death and Sadus).

Another thing that's fun about this band is that they are indeed the most disgusting in terms of lyrics, holy s**t man. These guys must have inspired other gore bands like CC and the like, and these guys are even more heinous than them! I'd definitely agree with Strapping Young Lad on that one. I mean just look at the REAL album cover (not the one that's displayed now). Stillborn has some of the most disturbing lyrics I've ever seen and I friggin love it, I won't spoil the surprise though you'll have to buy this yourself! I'm not giving this the full 5 stars because a couple of the songs are a tad generic and a little boring especially on the first half, the second half has the best songs. Some of my faves are the title track, Embalmed, and Critical Madness.

So if old school simple DM is your thing (as you all know I LIVE for this) this is certainly mandatory. For more awesome and underrated old school DM get their other great album Mental Funeral, the first two Entombed albums (LHP is GODLY), some Dismember, Malevolent Creation, and Pestilence (Consuming Impulse is downright amazing). I made the mistake of checking this band out 3 weeks ago.
There is absolutely nothing intrigueing about this album not one solo to be found in any song, no new wave style hardcore vocals to be found, no chugachuga breakdowns, the band members don't have the cool hairdos and tight girl pants and worst of all this band isn't on MTV, TRL, Headbanger's Ball, VH1 and Uranium like the fantastic Trivium, From Autum to Ashes, Unearth, Bleeding Through, the always amazingly brutal Atreyu, and basically every OC cool "Hardcore" band because that's a cool trend not this garbage

What else is there to say? If you are a death metal fan and you don't own this, you haven't been to the summit of the genre. This is just essential. A beautiful work of art.

A 1970 LP that was missed by a lot of hippies but not by me. It turnrd out to be a very personal uplifting rock record where andy clark sings with a gravelly voice and Mick Hutchinson plays lead guitar almost as good as Jimi Hendrix. Amazing Stephen Amazing plays bass guitar, and drummer adds solid backing. Two best tracks are Best Suit Free to be Stoned.

An outstanding CD of Miklos Rozsa film music.......2005-09-28

This CD is the real deal, the authentic music from Rozsa's movie scores delivered by an unnamed orchestra with the composer at the helm. The first half is recorded in stereo and recorded in Los Angeles in 1962. The back half is in excellent mono and recorded in Europe in 1952.

While many listeners have heard the Roman marches from "Ben Hur" and "Quo Vadis" as well as the music from "Spellbound" by watching the films themselves, I would draw your attention to the outstanding music herein from "El Cid" and "The Red House", two movies I have never seen.

The three selections from "El Cid" -- Overture, Love Theme and the outstanding El Cid March -- comprise an organic entity boiling over in Spanish flavor. The four selections from "The Red House" -- Prelude, Screams In The Night, The Oxhead Woods and the very disturbing Retribution -- do even more to create an atmospheric thriller in good mono right there on your home or car stereo! The addition of a wobbly female voice in "Screams of the Night" section adds suspense and aura to this already highly effective thriller coming from your equipment.

I'd say this music has to be heard in its entirety to be believed. It eschews the common failings of film music and in effect creates a suite from each movie that rivals, even betters, well known classical music suites. These are impassioned, thrilling, highly fulfilling performances that must be considered authoritative given the leadership of the composer.

The one small drawback to this issue are the scanty two page notes about Rozsa and his role in Hollywood. Still, it is the music you want to hear and the music on this CD is glorious beyond glory. On the evidence of this issue, there is no question Rozsa ranks up there with Bernard Herrmann as the best writers for film in the 20th century.

When film lovers talk about classic film scores, they normally speak of Hermann, Waxman, Steiner, and a few others. It's too bad Rozsa's name is not mentioned more, because he was truly one of the greatest composers of film music. Rozsa was a master of creating excitement and tension in his scores, even if excitement and tension were lacking in the films themselves! I have never seen 'The Red House,' but I'd see it in a minute after hearing the soundtrack represented here. A nice look at a forgotten film great and his music.

The scores on this CD are beautiful and grand, matching the expanse of the movies they were ment to score. Written in the Golden Age of Film Scores which helped inspire modern film score composers such as John Williams.
