Hauntingly beautiful voice - highly recommended and not only for the Guyatri Mantra.

5 out of 5 stars music to soothe the soul.......2007-01-08

I bought this CD after hearing someone else play it. It is absolutely wonderful. The first couple of tracks are great for deep relaxation and the rest is wonderful for doing Asanas. One of the best cd's Iv'e come across. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars peaceful and enchanting..powerful.......2006-09-02

I found the music to be healing. You will feel more connected with humanity as it has a multicultural beauty. Enchanting use of voice and unique musical instruments.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Ethereal and Uplifting.......2006-03-01

For years now I have encouraged people to use play lists to provide a soundtrack for work, recreation and contemplation. If done properly, they can quickly put your mind and subtle systems into perfect alignment to carry out whatever you want or need to do. Constructing play lists has become so much easier with the advent of the iPod. One of the fun things about iTunes is being able to see how many times you have played a particular song.

I was a little surprised to see that I had played the crown jewel of this collection - the Gayatri Manta - well over a hundred times over the last five years or so. Deva Premal's interpretation of this famous piece is extraordinarily fine, as is the entire album. It is almost impossible not to be uplifted by her amazing voice, which is rich, resonant and deepened by the most extraordinary sub-harmonics. Indeed if you are not, it may be a helpful pointer that something is not going quite right in your body or in your life, and that it's time to get some guidance about how to help yourself.

So much more than music, this is sound therapy.

5 out of 5 stars Bliss.......2006-01-30

My yoga instructor often plays track 1 at the end of class while we're resting in savasana--listening brings me back to that feeling of pure bliss and awareness. The whole disk is beautiful.

Since Toby Keith's commercial success and canny image manipulation show how shrewd he is, perhaps the best explanation for songs as lackluster as "Note to Self" (a generic Rolling Stones arrangement with a hokey lyric) and "Runnin' Block" (about bedding an unattractive woman for the benefit of a buddy) are either laziness or pandering. On White Trash with Money, his first release on his own Show Dog imprint (and without longtime producer James Stroud), Keith occasionally appears to be stretching himself--on the string-laden balladry of "A Little Too Late," the tender "Crash Here Tonight," and perhaps his finest vocal performance to date on "Too Far This Time"--but often seems to be coasting. "Get Drunk and Be Somebody," "Grain of Salt," and "Brand-New Bow" are never less (and little more) than dumb fun, while "Can't Buy You Money" is a clever twist on the "money can't buy you love" adage. The most contentious track here, "Ain't No Right Way," is just waving a red flag at those who refuse to reduce complex issues to simple black-and-white. Keith insists that he only writes as many songs as he needs to record; this time, some quality control might have required writing a few more. --Don McLeese

1 out of 5 stars Another fiasco.......2007-07-23

I gave it one star because it is just not possible to give less.
Toby Keith goes from bad to worse. I cannot buy his music even if they paid me to do such.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2007-04-16

I have generally really enjoyed Toby Keith in the past. I respect his integrity and songwriting skills, but this album diappoints. At it's best, it offers little in the way of new sounds, new ideas, or new flavors. At it's worst, it's dim and, in some cases offensive. None of these songs excited me (like "Beer For My Horses" or "Let's Talk About Me" or wooed me like "I Love This Bar" or "Wish I Didn't Know".

Songs like "Running Block" are downright offensive (and no, I'm not overweight, I just have compassion).

5 out of 5 stars obviously great! .......2007-02-06

music is great or we wouldnt have bought the cd in the first place :)

5 out of 5 stars Machismo Music.......2007-01-28

Toby Keith is cheeky without being arrogant. I like his voice. His music has a baseline brass knuckle truth. I have a friend that I think of every time I hear the the song "I love this bar" Toby Keith has no pretentions to "air"

5 out of 5 stars Toby does it again.......2007-01-21

Chant is a new marketing niche in the alternative music scene, and swings from albums of straight recitations to a glut of electronica mantra CDs. A group like Rasa turns chants into cinematic excursions. Singer Donna DeLory recasts chants as pop hooks and Krishna Das growls them into guttural ruminations. But the German singer Deva Premal was doing the mantra thing long before it became a commercialized trend.

On Dakshina, Premal, along with her partner, guitarist Miten, converts chants into serene, almost easy-listening refrains. Premal has a warm alto that she deploys on rhythm-free chorales of Enyaesque vocal layers to downtempo, world-beat grooves. With her chants harmonized and repeated into infinity, the effect can be like an ocean surface. It's constantly flowing and in motion, but doesn't have a lot of focus. But on songs like "Guru Rinpoche Mantra" or "Homage to Krishna," a wave rises and carries you down its face in a slo-mo free fall. Premal keeps it mostly acoustic, filling in ornamental lines with acoustic guitar, tamboura, and bansuri flutes. Only the orchestral strings occasionally get in the way. Her previous albums have often been sappy in their new age aspirations, but on Dakshina, she's more naked, stripping her sound down to a deeper emotional core. --John Diliberto

Album Description

Mantras are rapidly becoming the music of choice for people seeking solace in sound, and Deva Premal, dubbed by one reviewer as "the Enya of mantra," is the voice they're turning to. With close to 400,000 CDs sold worldwide and a buzz of interest from ardent fans ranging from yogis, therapists and alternative health practitioners to Cher and His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Deva Premal and her partner Miten have achieved a huge degree of recognition in the blossoming niche world of yoga music.

Deva Premal's music is driven by a simple yet elegant vision: "everybody with a voice can sing, and everyone with a breath in their body can experience their divinity...we share with others the healing power of music, and the bliss that it brings." The phenomenon of her groundswell of listeners is living proof that mantras are as relevant today as they were thousands of years ago.

Featuring Deva Premal's transcendent voice layered in a chorus of lush harmonies, Dakshina is a celebration of the divine, perfect for yoga and relaxation.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Heart Music.......2007-07-21

The first expectantly hopeful playing of this CD was a disappointment. I feared the arrangement might be too artfully new-agey. The second playing, however, was deeper and captivatingly beautiful. This is heart-opening music. Deva sings from a deep well in her heart, and the haunting sweetness of her devotional song evokes a purely emotional resonance in the heart of this listener. This CD is a gem!

5 out of 5 stars Really Beautifull!.......2007-07-17

If you like mantras and Hindu culture you will love this cd.
It's very good if you need moments of peace and meditation.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice.......2007-07-07

This CD is a collection of songs which evoke a primordial contact with that which you are - that which is beyond thoughts, words and concepts. At first the CD was rather hard to listen to - beautiful music but a little annoying. But with repeated listening without the mind getting in the way, the spirit which is obviously creating these sounds comes through. The expression in sound is a vibration which is the very nature of what you are. Recommended

Graced by ancient mantras and mult-level harmonies, LOVE IS SPACE glows with an inspiring, heart-centered passion. Deva Premal's voice, like silk, like liquid bliss, is accompanied by Jai Uttal, Miten and Kit Walker's amazing keyboard and rhythm tracks. LOVE IS SPACE, as the title suggests, is a journey into the spacious golden land of chant.

This is amazingly sensual music that is ideal for yoga, meditation, healing work, and, not least of all, slow passionate dancing.

This, Anonymous 4's final recording, is a break from their usual "early music" periods and locations; it presents American music, religious in nature, from the 18th and 19th centuries. And it's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Their normal, exquisite technique and purity here blend to sound the way we imagined the ladies' choir in church meetings in America past might have sounded: sweet, sincere, and with harmonies recognizable yet somehow fresh. Some of the songs begin with the women singing "fa, so la" exercises, which was called "shape note" singing because some places taught singing with notes as shapes--circle, rectangle, diamond, triangle. But it's the music that counts, and there are treasures here. They include two versions of "Amazing Grace," one familiar, one with an unusual melody and a piece called "Blooming Vale" which is as sophisticated as anything on their previous albums. "Shall We Gather at the River" is performed with a clarity and loveliness that makes us forget that it's normally sung as background to movies about the Great Depression. The foursome sometimes sing in rich harmonies and occasionally alone or in pairs or trios. This is glorious Americana and highly recommended. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars spiritual americana.......2007-01-06

I have some of the older Anonymous 4 recordings which are more medieval
and gregorian in style (I love them!). They move on to cover spiritual
basics of the 1800s. If you like classical music, perfect harmonies
and spiritual americina, then you will be blessed!

5 out of 5 stars Rich Heritage.......2006-10-11

Anonymous 4 consistently produces exquisite and authentically beautiful recordings and this one presents early American hymns in ways few groups can manage. Some tunes are highly recognizable while others are 'new' to me but a refreshing reminder of the singing heritage of religious societies in times past. For those who enjoy old hymns and authentic renderings, this is a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars Superb .......2006-08-07

This collection of American Christian music is not only an enthralling musical experience but a spiritually uplifting one as well. Anonymous Four have transferred their luminous vocal quality to a new space with perfect success.

5 out of 5 stars Can't walk away from it!.......2006-08-07

My only "complaint" about the CD is that I absolutely HAVE to sit and listen to the entire thing whenever I start it up! I usually have music playing in the background while doing other things, but not this one! There are no tracks that I find myself wanting to skip over as in most collections. In fact, I usually find myself going back and listening to selected tracks again (and again and...) after taking the hour+ to listen to the whole thing through once.

These four ladies produce a unique and remarkable sound. I can't recommend it enough.

5 out of 5 stars Mana from Heaven.......2006-05-08

I think the title of this CD is perfect. I first heard an interview for this CD on Public Radio and fell in love. I had never heard Anonymous 4 before then but look for all I can find of their music now. The title is perfect as the women sound like Angels and the music lifts the spirit. I find myself singing the old version of Amazing Grace all the time now. Incredible and a huge blessing to all who hear it.

Deva ("Deva" is a Hindu title for divine) Premal has attracted a following by framing ancient Hindu mantras within atmospheric, contemporary settings. The result on Embrace, her third release, is at times flavorful, at other times undistinguished, but it produces more intriguing moments than duds. On occasion, Premal aspires to Enya-like reverence (e.g., tracks 2 and 4), then elsewhere coos her ancient text atop gentle grooves and jazzy flutes (tracks 3 and 6) in a manner suggestive of Deep Forest. Some might describe it as "smooth chant." Highlights include "Shree Ram Jai Ram," a beautifully realized cross-pollination of East and West (highlighted by Kit Walker's free-floating piano and Premal's resonant choir of voices) that hints at what Joni Mitchell might create if she tried her hand at Eastern music. --Terry Wood

Album Description

EMBRACE, the long awaited new album from Deva Premal, finds this best-selling singer at the height of her art, expressing the ancient wisdom of mantra through a contemporary musical vision. Her radiant voice, richer and more assured than ever before, floats above a cool, sensual groove provided by some of today's finest world fusion artists and producers Miten and Kit Walker (Walela, Kitaro, Neal Schon).

Deva Premal enthralled audiences worldwide with THE ESSENCE and LOVE IS SPACE. That phenomenal success continues with EMBRACE. Its relaxed, uplifting feel and elegant sense of space can only heighten the spell already cast by this mantra enchantress.

"Majestic, deep and full of love," Deva Premal's EMBRACE is a lovely and moving next chapter from an artist whose incredible potential is only beginning to unfold.

Album Description

Deva Premal's Embrace expands on the Eastern Indian fusion and ethereal vocals of her previous work, combining timeless mantras with contemporary arrangements. Innocent, soothing and laid-back. Features 8 tracks of sensual music for yoga, packaged in a slipcase. White Swan. 2004.

If I have only one world for this CD, that world would be:

GREAT

I love this woman, her voice is so perfect, strong and clear...

5 out of 5 stars sublime.......2006-11-12

Being Indian I started on this CD with trepidation, expecting a western pop version of indian chants. But Deva produces an authentic bhakti experience and dissolved my fear. Her music, though somewhat different from my past Indian experience, blissfully conveys the Spirit that are the words themselves. In India it is said that if one has bhakti in the heart then the singing of and about the Names will convey the inhernt bliss, irrespective of all else.
Listen to this CD and feel the bliss.

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting, absolutely beautiful!!.......2006-09-02

I think this is one of Deva's best...her voice, the music are all deeply moving and wonderful...there are solemm pieces and also joyful ones that literally make me dance! Lots of drumming and even a little jazzy at times...I could listen to this CD over and over again and I never tire of it!!

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-06-08

I found this disc disappointing compared to Deva's brilliant first CD entitled The Essence - which is a must have. What seems strange to me is that she is on the inside cover touching Buddha's chest, while the first track sounds like make-out music. Hmmmm.... For what it's worth, an Indian Brahmin confirmed that some of the mantras are concoctions, too, which does not really set a good precedent. People copy Deva's chanting in their kirtans and in this respect her work is influential. Although being innovative can be commendable, spiritual traditional chants are, in my opinion, off limits for whimsical changes. I wish she would get her mantras from reliable sources in the future.

Hard core Deva fans won't notice, of course, and will love this.

5 out of 5 stars A voice of peace and happiness.......2007-05-23

I have bought almost a dozen of these CDs to share with people - I gave many of them for presents. What a way to find peace and happiness just listening to Cecilia - I either play it while I cook or during dinner - or just in mediation. Awesome!

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly beautiful celebration of the Goddess Spirit.......2007-05-09

I bought this CD in 1999 while trying to find another artist who's name I had missed but wanted the track. This was not the CD I was looking for (which I never did find!) but, nevertheless, still became one of my most precious and treasured CDs. This CD has shared the player with hard hitting Rock & Roll, Punk, Grunge and all sorts of genres but has always had a place because this woman's voice and delivery is just plain awesome and touches something so deep.

Sure it's a bit of a shock for the visitors if the player moves on from the Sex Pistols, The Cramps, Hole or Whitesnake or someone to Cecilia but if there was ever a voice that could be described a heavenly, I reckon this is it. Cecilia makes most Opera sound wooden and unemotional, disciplined without passion. Cecilia makes the legends of emotional and meaningful such as the blues legends or artists like Joan Baez sound more folky and less refined, just by comparison (and I could never say a bad word about Joan Baez or her music!).

It's only by finding this CD here on Amazon that I have actually found anything more out about Cecilia than was included in the liner notes all those years ago. There are now three certainties in life-1. Death, 2. Taxes and 3. I will own everything of Cecilia's I can lay my hands on. Unless she's lost anything since `Voice of the Feminine Spirit' both musically and lyrically she is spectacular!!

Cheers

Lloyd

5 out of 5 stars Outstandingly Beautiful!.......2006-08-03

This Norwegian-born lady has a superb voice. It echoes to the heavens and beyond, piercing the Universe. This music is different than anything I've ever heard. It has definitive depth. You feel like you could walk on it, right into a cloud. (No, I'm not "on" anything.) I also heard of Cecilia from Dr. Wayne Dyer, an outstanding speaker and writer. The first time I heard "Amazing Grace," I cried like a baby. I mean, like, I had to pull off the road! Truly awesome! Probably the most beautiful thing I have EVER heard. Downright ethereal!

If you're into meditation, try meditating with this CD, especially #6 "Amazing Grace, Prayer to the Whales." The vibration is awesome. Bet it will really blow your mind!

4 out of 5 stars Mirrimask - the music.......2007-08-06

After seeing the movie, I had to get the music. It was not disappointing. The songs are mythical, the arrangements and instrumentation are excellent. Only drawback is the "soundtrack" characteristic of short snipits of songs that work better in the movie than by themselves.

4 out of 5 stars Great movie, better soundtrack.......2007-05-19

I just recently saw this movie and the only thing I could think about afterwards was that I had to get this soundtrack. I'm not usually a big fan of movie soundtracks, but this cd is unlike any other out there, soundtrack or not. The use of strings and carnaval type instruments is completely unique and makes this a must by for any fan of music.

5 out of 5 stars great collection of unusual music.......2007-05-07

Rented the movie on reccomendation from Netflix, it was pretty good. But the music was the star of the show. The soundtrack follows the course of the movie pretty closely, it's kind of like listening to the movie. Each track brings to mind a specific scene in the movie. One of the highlights is the ecclectic treatment of Burt Bacharach's "Close to You". Most will remember the super-sweet Carpenter's version, but this interpretation was the main reason I bought the music. Unusual augmented chord progressions and almost minimalist format (complete with the mechanical background sounds made by the female jack-in-the-box-like, life-sized, mostly metal toy dressers) make the tune as captivating as in the movie when they 'convert' the trapped Helena into the black princess. Great music to play while relaxing, too.

5 out of 5 stars Supurb.......2007-03-08

This soundtrack is truly a delight to listen to. It ranges from quirky circus music to deep and melodic mysterious tunes. It is a great CD to relax to and to use as background music for most any relaxing time hanging out with friends.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-02-24

This is a very good soundtrack to a very good movie. The music is amazingly composed and is nice to listen to.

Two factors account for the broad-based popularity of Secret Garden (the duo of Norwegian keyboardist Rolf Lovland and Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry). One: the twosome's attractive, smartly conceived mix of compatible elements including light classical, urbane New Age, and well-mannered contemporary Celtic. Two: the pair's ability to persuasively present this formula with poise and (crucially) fetching good looks in a concert film, which in 1999 enjoyed broad exposure on American public television. (The performance, A Night with Secret Garden, is available on DVD.) White Stones is Lovland and Sherry's second collaboration, and, despite a few side trips into weighty sentimentality (e.g., the heart-clutching earnestness of "First Day of Spring"), it nicely conveys the pair's simple yet endearing children-of-the-cosmos spirit. Highlights here include the disc's energized, Celtic-influenced tunes ("Steps," "Moving," "Escape") and an infectious, regal charmer ("Celebration") Lovland composed in honor of the Queen of Norway's 60th birthday. Accompanied on nearly every piece by a small orchestra or Celtic instrumentalists, Sherry's violin sometimes evokes moods of melancholy that seem better suited for a two-hanky, movie-of-the-week film score. Yet a piece such as "Hymn to Hope" shows she can also elegantly trigger deeper feelings of longing and anticipation that can linger for hours. Overall, a worthwhile listen. --Terry Wood

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant, romantic music for the soul.......2007-06-27

As a fan of "Secret Garden" I have enjoyed this CD for weeks now. I fall asleep to it almost every night. It is not my very favorite, prefering the turn of the century one, but I do alternate listening to both. I am looking forward to a new album, as the recently purchsed one has mostly repeats on it.
Talented musicians, composers and singers make this CD incredibly enjoyable and I do say I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Work.......2007-04-15

This is by far my favorite Secret Garden CD and their only all instumental CD. I prefer the allegro selections , despite the fact that they consider them to be filler material . The musicianship is first rate and you would never know that the individual songs were recorded in pieces , unless you visited their website . This CD has , what the Grateful Dead refered to as , the X factor . Everything on each selection flows together as if all of the musicians were in the same studio doing it live . Fionnuala Sherry dominates the entire work as the featured artist , but certainly doesn't overpower the rest of the fine musicians involved . I find it remarkable that this CD has never received a major award .

5 out of 5 stars Classic, beautiful music by Secret Garden - INCREDIBLE.......2006-07-10

Secret Garden is the best discovery of my life as far as music goes. The violin is so soft and beautiful, and the singing is ethereal. I cannot get enough of this group! I highly recommend White Stones. I love Irish music and they have a lot of songs that have the Irish Celtic sound, and I just cannot say enough good things about this CD.

Excellent orchestrations, with use of specific instruments to bring out various emotions in the listener. Excellent up front or as background music, or even for meditation. I like driving in the mountains or desert listening to any of Secret Garden's great music.

Secret Garden's "Whitestones", is an amazing CD. The talent of Rolf Lovland and Fionnula Sherry is unprecedented...their styles compliment each other perfectly. "Whitestones" is a beautiful compilation of instrumentals, highlighting Rolf's songwriting and piano ability as well as Fionnula's amazing and haunting violin melodies. The songs on "Whitestones" are perfect to listen to after a long and stressful day, in the bath, and they are perfect to listen to while falling asleep as the songs are very ethereal and dreamlike. I have been listening to this disc for about six years and it is still in my main CD rotation, in fact I used the song "Hymn" at my wedding as I walked down the isle. This CD is a must to own for those who appreciate New Age and Celtic music. Their other albums are also amazing, and I am proud to say that I own every one of their releases and I am looking forward to their next release which will be out soon!

German-born Deva Premal is a certified diva of the new age, having traversed the requisite Eastern spiritual paths, communing in Indian and following the late guru Bhaghwan Shree Rajneesh, also known as Osho. While her last CD, Dakshina, had a bit more of a pop-Enyaesque sensibility, Moola Mantra is a much more meditative affair as Premal sings a single, 15-word Sanskrit mantra over the course of six lushly smooth Indian fusion arrangements. The disc is something of a mantra super session, with kirtan crooner Jai Uttal playing dotar, Nepalese bansuri flute player Manose, pianist Kit Walker, sitarist Peter Van Gelder (who played with Grace Slick and the Great Society) and esraj player Benjy Wertheimer. They're among the ensemble providing the patchouli-scented ornamentations that surround Premal's serene voice. With producer Ben Leinbach's detailed arrangements and Premal's overdubbed vocal choirs, Moola Mantra recalls similar Hindu adaptations by Rasa more than any other Premal CD. Like Rasa's Hans Christian, Leinbach is a capable multi-instrumentalist with a gift for trance grooves that don't tire and evocative instrumental touches like the tremolo guitar bleeding into Uttal's dotar solo on "Part II." The music is a languid float down an endless stream, but the repetition of the mantra, even with inventive melodic variation, can get tiresome. Premal tries to have it both ways, mantra as art and as spiritual practice. --John Diliberto
