High Water [Enhanced]
Editorial Reviews
From the Artist
"I'm grateful to have been able to collaborate with such amazing musicians. I brought in compositions that the players of the Blue Series improvised to. I then took the results and reworked them into structured songs. There is only one guest appearance on the record...my father Harry Meline, or Harry Keys as he goes by when performing. The album is for him." --El-P
Product Description
The collaboration between El-P and The Blue Series Continuum (Guillermo E. Brown, Roy Campbell, Daniel Carter, William Parker, Matthew Shipp, and Steve Swell) isn't a record of El-P remixing jazz tracks. He lets the players do what they do best, then brings the sonics into his laboratory, emerging with a unique, progressive, respectful, and ultimately triumphant expression of his musical ideas.

Tinsley Ellis has earned a reputation for heavy blues-rock guitar since he quit Atlanta's Heartfixers in 1987. Often it's been a little too heavy, ignoring the dynamic nuances that bring out the emotional nature of the blues. But Ellis's first album for Telarc lightens up just enough, so the sweet-and-high six-string intro to "Stuck in Love" enhances the song's guitar melody and the tenderness of his lyrics. He aims for a softer, thinner tone on "Real Bad Way" and turns "Feel No Pain" into a slow, soulful essay in guitar anxiety, full of telling fills, bends, and solo breaks. He also plays some acoustic numbers that allow the butter-and-black-pepper tones of his Southern-accented voice to emerge. Not that Ellis is playing things too cool; there's still plenty of guitar fire all over this record. It's just that he's learned to control the burning. --Ted Drozdowski

Great Blues!.......2006-03-16
Saw this band perform in Key West, and knew I had to have the CD. And it is all it is hyped. great blues music and even better in person!
Continues His Hot Streak.......2004-05-21
Coming off of his previous release to this "Kingpin," this is another fine recording. You get alittle of everything on here, but it's all blues. Of particular note to me was the instant classic "Feelin' No Pain," over 8 minutes of awesome blues and no-wasted-notes soloing by Ellis. "Stuck In Love" is over 6 minutes of the same, excellent soloing by Ellis. My other favorite was "All I Can Do", which borrows the guitar riff from Hendrix's "Spanish Castle Magic." This is blues done with style and I highly recommend it.
"Tinsleys' Best!".......2003-11-15
I'll make it short and sweet..... by far Tinsley Ellis' best effort to date. When I bought this CD I thought after the first two tracks, nothing special....... but the next nine tracks in a row from "Mystery To Me" to "Ten Year Day" is in my opinion, the finest material Tinsley has released in his career...so far. If you buy only one Tinsley Ellis CD, do yourself a favor, make it "Hell Or High Water" I guarantee.... there will be no disappointment!
Tinsley Ellis at his best.......2002-07-13
Tinsley is an unbelievable live performer who absolutely plays and sings from the heart, but his albums don't always capture this energy. I was lucky enough to catch this set live before listening to the CD and while Hell Or High Water won't be mistaken for a live performance, it is the closest thing to the "real" Tinsley Ellis I have heard on disk. Over the years Tinsley has continued to hone his craft as both a guitarist and vocalist resulting in a CD that shows us a mature performer with great command of his instrument, who can tear it up without ever getting out of control. While this CD may fall into a niche market, for those who appreciate Tinsley's work, this is a great CD.
Still Kicking it!.......2002-04-29
Tinsley still rocks! His first sortie with Telarc leaves nothing to be desired for Southern Blues/Rock fans - and Telarc brings the kind of warmth and directness of sound that one would expect of such an effort! I feel this album above his previous efforts, captures more of the "live" essence that sets him apart. Blues with alot of rock and a whole lot of soul! Simple vibes that ring true - genuine stuff from the heart. 'Hell or high water' sets the tone and 'Stuck in love', 'Real bad way' and 'Set love free' bing it home! Plenty of emotion and lots of soul. His best all-around effort yet!

Hip-Hop Producer Tackles, Jazz....(Listeners Responses will Vary!!!).......2006-11-14
Taking one of leftfield hip-hop's most celebrated producers, and giving him the opportunity to work with the modern creative / Improvisational jazz label "Thirsty Ear", doesn't exactly inspire confidence with those accustomed to the sci-fi beats normally associated with El-P's work. But then the Thirsty Ear label is far more interested in taking disparate artists and merging their ideas and arrangements with the performers, of the up-and-coming experimental jazz label.
Largely based around the collaborations, with pianist Matthew Shipp, bassist William Parker, drummer Guillermo E. Brown, Daniel Carter on reeds and flute, Steve Swell on trombone, and trumpeter Roy Campbell. What this amounts to, is El-P not only performing (one would assume with the sampling, Beat creation, and Mixing of tracks), but he also arranges and produces all of the 8 Tracks. And what you get a series of loose ideas mixed with improvisation and the merging of EL-P's production skill (and an unrealised knack for leftfield jazz composition), feed through the performers, who interpret his ideas into fully workable tracks.
Those that are familiar with the more fractured and loosely performed end of Jazz fusion / Avant-garde Jazz, or indeed the `Thirsty Ear' label, wouldn't be surprised by the ambitious blend of shimmering soundscapes and Lush melancholic textured sound, that sits alongside synthetic beats, off-centre grooves, and droning bass. Almost like theres a tangible line between finesse and brutality. For every passage of sublime trumpet and rhythm section working in harmony, to create a mood and haunting sound, that sounds a million miles away from El-P's previous work, there's sudden changes in the direction of sound, with droning noise, mixing a complex interweaving of various sounds and tempos, that contradict each other, but under the performance of such uniformly skilled performers, feels like a mildly thrilling tug-of-war, between tension and release.
It's not entirely known as to exactly how much fans of EL-P's work, will take to a project such as this. As it has very little to do with his, "Definitive Jux" or "Company Flow" work. In fact the only similarities are an approach to thinking `outside the box' in terms of construction. That not to say that hip-hop fans won't enjoy this, but I fear that the vast majority will be repelled by the abstract instrumentation, Matthew shipp's subtle tumbling piano, improvisational rhythms, and muted hip-hop beats, which will simply have no logical path for those unaccustomed to this kind of music. With it all sounding like a group of guys messily jamming with half-formed ideas, with minimal interruption from El-P. But on the other side of the coin, there'll be those (like me), that find the loose structure and atmospheric and vibrant playing, swelling synths, lightly interspersed computer sampling, ominous trombone blowing, sparsely insistent piano, that make for, on occasion...indulgently sprawling avant-jazz pieces with a consistently adventurous tone, and a willingness to effectively engage the listener, is incredibly admirable. Especially considering how EL-P is aware of how many of his fans will undoubtedly shun a release such as this.
In fact this project reminds me of slight parallels with "Sun Ra's" work.....in so far as it's capable of moments of sheer beautifully restrained moody moments, that touch on the affecting moments of Jazz, only to be contradicted by formless improvisation grooves, that feel like musicians keen to push the envelope, with little consideration for melody or structure. And for me personally that works perfectly well...as I truly appreciate both aspects of that form of music, and like "Sun Ra's" work it can be a real `Love Em' or `Hate Em' affair with their music. And although I love what EL-P has done here, I must review this with a word of caution, as there'll be those that'll buy this album, seeing EL-P's name on the cover, and end up feeling ripped off after listening to it. ...not releasing that this is a `Jazz' album first and foremost. For those familiar with the "Thirsty Ear" label, this is one of the most accessible titles in their Catalogue, and I would seriously recommend it to those that are willing to buy this knowing what to expect. Atmospheric, vibrant, superbly played, brilliantly produced and as complex and subtle as it is accessible/inaccessible, I'll freely admit that I'm loving this album at the moment, and although I've given it four stars, I reckon subsequent listens further down the line, will push this up to a 4 ½ - 5 stars.
el producto... did he even do anything on this record?.......2006-05-25
I found this used and I found out why. It's simply wack. Even for a jazz record. I'm highly into jazz, but found myself skipping tracks and hearing trumpet players ad lib off-key. If El-p really was proud of this LP, he would have released it on Def Jux.
When listening to this record you find that El-p has very little to do with this album. It apears as if he's just sitting in on the sessions and observing the muscians play. In other words, some record label thought they'd sell more units by saying El-p did it than say their muscians made the music.
Interesting effort and expirement, but this album doesn't have any replay value.
Not what I expected.... (3.5).......2006-01-07
Just a disclaimer to fans of El-P: he does not rap on this album, and he does not make hip-hop instrumentals. This is a jazz album by El-P. Same guy, completely different music.
But as a jazz album, it is pretty impressive. This is not usually the direction his music takes, so I will admit it was unexpected. But it is a pretty good effort. He's no Coltrane, but it is an all right album. But if you're an El-P fan but not a jazz fan, just leave it alone.
i've been looking for something like this.......2005-06-01
i've always wanted to hear this record, but didn't quite know it, and didn't know where to begin. i knew someone out there had to be creating a contemporary, bluesy sound that was infused with some more modern sounds, but the few things i found that i thought might fit the bill just didn't (madlib, blockhead, rjd2). when this came out, i braced myself for disappointment again. then when i read some terrible reviews, i just didn't pursue the album anymore. which was a mistake. this has probably been out there for 6 months now, and now that i have finally heard it, it's nearly exactly what i'd been looking for. i am not versed in jazz or blues at all, so i can't comment on how faithful this remains to any of it, but i've always heard and liked certain aspects of both, but never either of them as a whole. same with hip hop. so, finding a record that marries both, tastefully, was going to be tough. this does it pretty well. truthfully, i think there could be a little more of el-p's personality here, and it wouldn't hurt. if anything, it would spice it up a bit.
i can't really break this down track by track, because i feel like this is something that i put on to listen to as a complete work. and, as a complete work, even though it comes in at around 44 minutes, i feel like when i listen to it, it seems a bit too short. if it clocked in at about an hour, i think it would be just right.
i can see people really not liking this. it just isn't for everyone, and if you go looking for aspects to pick on, as a fan of traditional blues, jazz, or hip hop, i'm sure there's plenty for you to tear into. but, for me, i'm not interested in picking it part. for once, i wanted something i could just hear and not have to consider any politics at all about. nor was i looking to put el-p under a microscope to see what he was really made of. it seems people either love him or hate him, and, as a result, are constantly looking to make or break him. i just want to let the guy go, because he seems to be doing fine. this record was the solid, blues/jazz/hip hop i needed. if you're looking for something like that, this might be perfect for you.
Four open minded hip hop heads........2004-06-16
This album is not recommended for closed minded El-p fans. If you like ambient neo jazz this is a pretty good CD. Combining soft, ambient jazz music with new age beats and synth, innovator El-p makes a his high water mark. 4 stars.

First Purple.......2006-05-19
This is the first DP release I've ever heard in my life, but it didn't take me long to get into them..I'm also not a big fan of metal, not that they're overly metal-sounding. It took me a song or two to get used to the singer's voice, but once I did, the music was perfect.
Deep Purple is great at creating an atmosphere, blending heavy rock guitar with great organ/keyboards and some quality drumming. They're also good at creating more subtley melodic (i.e. the keyboards) and organic music (see Anyone's Daughter), and I enjoy the structure of their songs, the back-to-back solos (on Child of Time the guitarist and keyboardist get into it like a duel--stunning). Very great rock music.
Average, But Beats Nobody's Perfect.......2005-06-10
The title says alot. But it might be more telling for me to say that this live document is the best of the Mach II reunion/post 1984-with-Blackmore live releases. But that's not saying too much. For Blackmore fanatics, I'd reccomend ANY of the '70's Deep Purple and Raibow live albums before this one. Jon Lord sounds good on keyboards, and Gillan's voice isn't totally fried yet. But I wasn't as impressed with the extended solo on "Anja" as so many appear to be...get Deep Purple's "Powerhouse", "In Concert" and most definitely "Made in Japan" before you get this one.
Stunning. And I'm not just saying that!.......2002-11-17
I have been a devoted Deep Purple fan for 30 years, but I tell it like it is. Trust me when I say that this live performance, recorded mostly in October 1993 in Stuttgart, Germany, is absolutely stunning. After countless listenings in recent years, I never tire of the dramatic power and delicate nuance brought forth with such virtuosity by Blackmore, Gillan, Lord, Glover and Paice. The whole atmosphere of the recording is so encompassing that it makes me feel as if I'm standing wide-eyed on stage with the band. Given the exceptional performance, flawless sound quality, and historical significance of this scintillating concert (being one of Blackmore's last with Purple), this CD is simply essential.
Live and Clean.......2001-10-20
I hate most live albums because the recorded sound is bad, but this live album sonically amazing, I suspect it has been retouched in studio. Any info?
Made In Japan - Not Quite!!.......2001-08-24
I guess the thought of another live album by the classic Mk II line-up of Deep Purple tends to create higher expectations than the quality of the results. Although the music itself is pretty good, the quality of the overall package leaves a little to be desired. For example, the cover lists a set of tracks. However, my CD player tells me that there are several more on the actual disc than appear on the cover, including "Lazy", "Woman From Tokyo" and "Space Truckin". Is there something ironic about the fact that this album only includes three tracks from the reunion period? Maybe they were starting to feel a little uncomfortable with this. Well Ritchie obviously was! Unlike some people I always liked "Anyone's Daughter" as a studio track, but the live version included here makes me wonder whether it was worth dusting it off after all these years. On the positive side it was good to hear the band actually rocking out - but was the souvenir of the era worth it? A must for Deep Purple completists like me, but for the casual listener, go for "Made In Japan" or even the 2CD "In Concert" set.

Customer Reviews:
Simple, effective rock.......2003-10-23
Throttlerod affirm in their opening track "Marigold", that you can take a basic rock blueprint and turn into a killer rock track. Whitehead's vocals are rugged, but complement Leslie's crushing riffs and blusey runs. Throttlerod are consistant in their sound throughout most of the album. The incessant little licks on "Suckerpunch", "Whistlin' Dixie", and "Across Town" seem a bit annoying, but in the end they become imbeded in your brain. The vocals are more edgy, with a cocksure delievery on the blues heavy, up-tempoed "Tomorrow and a Loaded Gun". The group shows they can lay down a funk groove on "No Damn Fool", a track about kicking a money grubbing girlfrind to the curb. There are some great `chugga-chugga' riffs on "In the Flood" and "Mariana". Throttlerod abandon the distortion for a more country music inspired sound on the ballad "Been Wrong", and continue the style on the heavier "On the Mountain".
Bottom Line:
Throttlerod keeps their musical formual simple; addictive songs, repetive licks and catchy riffs played through a Les Paul guitar, plugged into a Marshall amp. It doesn't get more rock and roll than that
Words cannot do Throttlerod justice--it's inexplicable........2003-10-04
Just to get this out of the way, Throttlerod is a solid band. When I say solid--I mean, talented, tight, and serious about their music. They didn't come here to screw around. They came to do it right, on their terms, and their way. This is as good as it gets. Anyone listening to music and enjoying it, but thinking "something's missing, but I can't put into words what that something is..." Listen to this--Throttlerod will make you whole. "You'll know it when you find it." Throttlerod is that "it".
"Sophomore album"--Hell and High Water. Forget the "sophomore jinx" crap. Oddly, these guys did have a job to do--living up to Eastbound and Down was a near impossibility. That album is damned close to perfect. There was a huge potential of let down as I waited the months to get a hold of Hell and High Water. Eastbound and Down IS that good. Hell and High Water (please pardon the cliche) takes it to the next level. Matt's songwriting ability is amazing and you can definitely hear the musical progression. This album kicks you in the head right off the bat and makes you listen to every song--and enjoy every song.
The most pedestrian way to describe Throttlerod is bluesy, southern influenced hard rock. Throw the word "honest" in their too--these guys do not screw around. Track 6--In the Flood. Heard a solo worth a damn lately? How about two guitars going back and forth in the classic "battle" style? Not something you're interested in? Listen to it and THEN say that. It's rock--big time. Track 7--Whistlin' Dixie--broke my steering wheel pounding along with it's badassitude. A little slap-bass-type funk feel in track 1--Marigold. TOTALLY unexpected, TOTALLY works, and makes you drive faster. WELCOME to the new ryhthm section! Drummer and basser are not new to the band, but this is their first album with Throttlerod. Both are insanely talented.
Buy Hell and High Water. Buy Eastbound and Down. Buy By the Horns (EP). Rock. Pick your ass up off the floor and rock again.
Throttlerod is not an "alternative" to what you have been listening to. Throttlerod is not "different". Throttlerod is not "a nice change" from that crap that spews from the radio and TV. Throttlerod does not "sound like this band or that band". Throttlerod is rock and you will know that within 3 nanoseconds of hearing them. It's just pure rock--something a LOT of people have not heard in WAY too long. Hard and heavy--just like we like it.
This is REAL ROCK MUSIC!!.......2003-10-01
This is without a doubt the most original, truly ROCK music I have heard in a long, long time -- nothing like the lame "rock" music you hear played over and over on your favorite "rock" station. The album opens with a song called "Marigold", which in my opinion is top-notch and definitely worthy of radio play. My other favorites are "On the Mountain" and "Sucker Punch". These songs have groove, edge, and real style. This band definitely broke the mold when they made this album. I wish I was better at describing these songs - all I know is how they make me feel -- like I want to drive fast and raise hell. This is one independent label CD you WON'T regret buying!

Break out the barrettes.......2006-03-01
Unbelievably, people are already nostalgic for the 90's. There's VH-1's "I Love The 90's," the recent outpouring of affection towards Bill Clinton, (even our current President seemed to miss him) and now there's The High Water Marks.
They revisit a particular 90's phenomenon; multi-gender band dabbling in cutesy melodies with screeching guitars, and containing at least one tall, lanky member who usually resembles veteran character actor James Cromwell.
Like those 90's bands, (Veruca Salt, Belly, etc.) the HWM's main flaw is that they try too hard to be adorable. "Have Another Dream" is perfect for babytalk and cooing with your loved one. The feedback in "Things To Do" sounds more like dolphins fornicating than a guitar. Even "Suicide" will make you think of cute 90's alternative girls with barrettes in their hair.
Finally, as if pushing a joke way too far, they're actually on Eenie Meenie records.
Breaking Up Is Hard to Do.......2004-12-11
The High Water Marks are a crashy, bashy, poppy treat for the ears. Think early-90's super-high density pop and beat-driven analog organ melodies that made you want to sing along and bop your head from side to side --happiness in song, and even when it's sad; it makes you happy!
Brought to you by some of today's best minds in indie-rock, The High Water Marks boast members that have crossed the distance to work with eachother, all the way from Oslo, Norway to New York; and via snail-mail no less. That's right, the collaboration was done between members of the band by mail.
Recorded between January and August of 2003 by Hilarie Sydney on guitar and lead vocals (Apples in Stereo, Secret Square), Per Ole Bratset on lead guitar and vocals (Palermo), Mike Snowden on bass (Von Hemmling), and Jim Lindsay on drums (Oranger, Preston School of Industry). This record is a veritable who's-who-where, with Apples in Stereo's Robert Schneider even stepping in to do the mixing. No, not underwear; WHO's-who-WHERE.
Bordering on some of the catchiest punky-pop I've heard in some time, most songs on this album are crunchy-fast, and just about good enough to eat. And although thirteen tracks live and breathe on 'Songs About The Ocean,' it seems to pass me by so quickly each time, that I have to pull out my chair and run, (run!), to that stereo and press play before it ends all over again. For The High Water Marks, this is a first release that I can only hope will be followed up with several other releases under the same name (and with the same members), barring what must be for each of them; a very busy schedule.
Bridging Hilarie's Velocity Girl-ish vocals with a spinning pop sound, the sparkly first track 'Good I Feel Bad' starts out the album. Other standout tracks include 'Have Another Dream,' 'Queen of Verlaine,' and a very singable number called 'National Time.' The High Water Mark's 'Songs About The Ocean' changes tempo with your moods, and I'm sure the tide too! It's a very dreamy and at times relaxed, and fun album, by a very dreamy and fun band. I want The High Water Marks to take ME home to meet "Queen of Verlaine," because with all this dancing around to, 'If I surely don't stop now / I won't stop tomorrow...' I'm beginning to feel a bit like Alice in Wonderland under the sea right now...
High marks!.......2004-11-18
The Apples in Stereo is one of the top bands in the Elephant 6 collective, and now the band has been cut down the middle. One half is Robert Schneider's band ulysses, and the other High Water Marks. Now High Water Marks makes a solid lo-fi debut, "Songs about the Ocean" with its own fuzzy psychedelic-edged version of garage rock.
It kicks off with the mildly discordant pop ditty "Good I Feel Bad," which seems to switch tempo into a mildly blistering rocker halfway through. A fuzzy bass kicks in for "Queen Verlaine," which doesn't manage to really be either good or bad -- but that sound is taken into outer space with the densely-packed fuzz-bass and electronic blips of "Sixth of July."
High Water Marks has weird mix of the raw and laid-back, mixed in with some crazy beats that never quite get catchy. It's all a little too straightforward to really make your feet tap. But it is a fun musical adventure, simple rock with some wild twists -- such as the sinuous guitar riffs in "Good I Feel Bad" -- and a psychedelic edge.
Sidney provides some solid, clear leading guitar as well as some equally clear vocals, but her singing tends to get buried in the dense instrumentation. Her voice is too wispy to stand above "Sixth of July's" heavy bass and fuzz. Per Ole Bratset's almost androgynous voice is a bit stronger than Sidney's, but he still tends to get overwhelmed by the music.
And the other band members have some excellent credentials as well -- Sidney got fellow Elephant-6-er Mike Snowdon to contribute some excellent basslines, full of heavy fuzz that feels like an avalanche on your ears. But she also has Per Ole Bratset of Palermo providing some wickedly twisting lead guitar. Jim Lindsay of Oranger and Preston School of Industry round out the group with some drumbeats you have to dig to find.
High Water Marks have plenty of promise, if they build on "Songs About the Ocean." Don't expect the Apples in Stereo -- just expect some solid lo-fi fuzz-rock, and you won't be disappointed.
This ain't no apples album.......2004-09-15
But it is nice to see Hilarie write her own songs and go her own direction without Robert. The album is really sweet and lo-fi with a twist of rock. Listen to Queen of Verlaine first if you can.
THE HIGH WATER MARKS IS THE BEST INDIE BAND EVER!.......2004-09-10
This collaboration with The Apples in stereo, Oranger, Palermo, and Von Hemmling is incredible. The tracks leave me craving for more each and everytime, and the tunes are really catchy and upbeat. I'd recommend this CD to anyone who's a lover of indie music or a music lover in general.

Customer Reviews:
A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26
These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.
I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

Customer Reviews:
Ahhh Patrice!.......2001-05-07
I bought this album (I'm amused to say) not on Amazon, for I had no idea til just now that it was even available here (!), but at a funky music store at the MusicMart in Chicago (Patrice's native haunt, by the way, where people seem to appreciate her worth and talent). What a lovely voice! In a world where opera has its mainstream stars (think Three Tenors and Sarah Brightman, and little Ms. Church), how refreshing it is to hear a voice as pure as it is radiant. Truly a performing artist, she is no doubt best experienced live, but if she is better live than on this cd, she must be pretty darn impressive, don't you think? A supporter and promoter of more obscure yet very worthwhile vocal literature, Michaels here performs her seemingly trademark Lully and Argento, as well as many other wonderful pieces. I especially (as a vocalist) recommend the Argento-his cycles are lovely (most notably the composer-letter cycles, unfortunately but understandably not present here-she can't do it all!). I have seen Patrice in performance, in action at workshops, and love her recordings. I recommend this highly!

A Great Intro to American Classical Music - Almost a Short Course!.......2005-07-12
Many reasonably sophisticated American and European musiclovers still think there are really no American classical music composers of note other than perhaps Gershwin and Copland. It is to the credit of the Naxos label, via their 'American Classics' series, that the lie is put to that notion. Each month there are new issues from Naxos containing music by American composers. And it was a brilliant idea for them to take selections from their dozens of releases of this music to put together this sampler of such music to illustrate a 100+ page essay on the subject by an eminent writer on music, Barrymore Laurence Scherer. The combination of 2 CDs of music tracks, Scherer's essay, a chronological outline, suggestions for further listening, even a map showing where various composers were born helps the 'student' learn much about our nation's musical heritage.
There are selections by twenty-eight composers stretching from the amazing Wagnerian 'Macbeth' Overture by William Henry Fry (1813-1864) to the very recent 'Rapture,' a percussion concerto by Michael Torke (b. 1961). Some selections are complete movements, others are shorter passages from larger works. Included are such gems as the first movement of Arthur Foote's Piano Quartet, the third movement of Henry Hadley's Fourth Symphony, Charles Ives's 'The Unanswered Question,' 'King Cotton' by John Philip Sousa, 'Maple Leaf Rag' by Scott Joplin, a passage (the exciting Spanish Waltz) from Walter Piston's 'The Incredible Flutist,' the finale of Copland's 'Billy the Kid,' the opening of Samuel Barber's luminous 'Knoxville - Summer of 1915,' 'Tonight' from Bernstein's 'West Side Story,' the opening of George Rochberg's masterful Violin Concerto, and John Adams's incredibly popular 'Short Ride in a Fast Machine.' Plus selections by Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Edward MacDowell, George Whitefield Chadwick, Amy Beach, Charles Tomlinson Griffes, Charles Wakefield Cadman, George Gershwin, George Antheil, Zez Confrey, William Schuman, John Cage, Gunther Schuller, Alan Hovhaness, Elliott Carter and Philip Glass. The performances are more than acceptable and in some instances ('Knoxville,' Rochberg's Violin Concerto) definitive.
I would heartily recommend this set (especially at its superbudget price) to anyone wanting to know more about the history of American classical music -- Scherer is a master of cogent, clear prose -- and wishing to hear examples of the broad range it has taken over the past couple of centuries. I can easily imagine this set being used in a music appreciation course. And I am sure it will spark interest in the newcomer to this branch of classical music.
