Celebrated New Yorkers M. Sayyid, Beans, Priest, and Earl Blaize bring their unique take on hip-hop to the world with this intensely challenging debut album. As part of the "progressive" hip-hop scene (which also includes the likes of Anticon, Shapeshifters, Mike Ladd, Project Blowed, and Celestial Records), Anti-Pop specializes in countering the formulas and fronts which keep much of today's hip-hop romanticizing in neutral. Producer Blaize's beats thunder and plod along efficiently, treading a fickle line between rhythm and chaos. Heavy on repetition and bleeding with distortion, Blaize crafts an interesting soundscape that lyricists Sayyid, Beans, and Priest use to play with words. Sci-fi rhymes and free-think flows are delivered with an almost pretentious cool. Their lyrical darts target the usual suspects: jigginess and materialism. If you're looking for something WAY different, but still VERY good, pick up this album. A fellow hip hop fan recommended them to me about five or six years ago. I couldn't get into them intially but, after a few listens, you'll finally "get" APC. Their genius is the fusion of hip hop and electronic beats, ambient soundtracks, unique flows, echo, reverb, and lyrics from another world.

One of my favorite hip hop songs ever, "Your World is Flat," is on this album. My other top two, on this album, are: "Rinseflow" and "Smores."

Their style's a lot different than any other other group out there right now and, mind you, this album came out in 2000. Unfortunately, APC have since broken up. Beans is now a solo act and High Priest and M. Sayyid are Airborne Audio. Who??? Exactly. Too bad because we had one of the most original hip hop acts since Ultramagnetic.

These guys opened up for Radiohead on their "Kid A/Amniesiac" Tour. Radiohead!!! All of their albums are great and I wish they'd get over whatever problems they had and get back together. APC live is one of the best live hip hop shows you'll ever see. "I guarantee (you have to say it like Justin Wilson)!"...

This is the album that resparked my interest in hip hop again, big time. The triple tag team rap attack of the sickeningly skilled M. Sayyid, Beans, and High Priest, along with the deep, dark, and at times almost sub-aquatic production is like nothing put to disc before or after. I would go as far as to call this album a landmark release, legendary even. It's not too abstract to listen to and it's not predictable mainstream garbage. Hearing these three power-packed and very different rapping styles from quite possibly the greatest MCs alive, weaving gritty tales of urban paranoia and painting vivid verbal dreamscapes that would make Dali blush simply blows my mind to pieces. How anyone can find this boring or flat is beyond me. You're either jealous or braindead if this stuff don't do it for ya. For my money, this, "The Tragic Epilogue" is the best rap recording of all time. APC is dead, long live APC.

After spending the past two years in the lab, High Priest and M Sayyid of Anti Pop Consortium will reemerge as Airborn Audio. Their debut album is scheduled to drop on Ninja Tune Records, Feb. 2005.

I am not really able to write a justified review on this album because I am unable to listen to it indepth enough as it bores the hell out of me. The lyrics might be abstract and ahead of there time, but Im pretty shure there nothing close to doseone and I am unable to really listen to lyrics when the vocalst sounds so boring and dull. I am ashamed to say that I would rather listen to some gangster rap than this. If your tired of pimped out egotistical rap and want something avant garde, indie, abstract, pregressive, poetical whatever you wanna call it. Listen to anticon and forget about this.

It's always good to see artists who push boundaries. However, it's always sad to see artists who push boundaries but forget to push the music. This record has it's high points, like PSA2 and Rinseflow, but in general it sounds like a bunch of mc's who can't really put an interesting rhyme or beat together, so settle for confusion. While confusion has made for some incredible hip hop records, this isn't one of them. Most of the album makes up for soul with college kid tricks. It's too bad, it seems like these guys do have talent, they just don't know how to use it.

Using the 10 CD set of Power Classics over the past five years while "working" daily on Nordic Trak has been a great help. The relatively short segments break up the workout and provide a welcome support for my efforts. The variety of selections available relieve boredom although, I must admit, when one selection finishes I can now mentally hum the next intro. I recommend this set highly for any strenuous workout program.
